RESUMEN

This article explores the patterns of 11 types of criminal evidence collected by a detective team in real-life 172 volume crime cases that occurred in South Korea. Electronic and paper case files were analyzed to examine the patterns of how much and which type of evidence was collected per case. The results show that, in general, the team collected almost four pieces of evidence per case, and notably, testimonial evidence (e.g., statements) was collected more often than physical evidence (e.g., video recordings, DNA, and fingerprints). Among the physical evidence types, video recording was the most available; victim statement was the most available of testimonial evidence types. Another finding was that more evidence was collected before than after interrogation. Overall, this study provides empirical insights into the current landscape of evidence collection practices in South Korean police investigations, with implications for both law enforcement procedures and academic research on criminal justice systems.

AIMS: To explore the sensitive components of full-field electroretinography (ERG) as indicators of retina function at the onset of acute ischaemic central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). METHODS: 11 patients (11 eyes) with ischaemic CRVO and 32 patients (32 eyes) with non-ischaemic CRVO who presented with first-episode unilateral CRVO within 1 month of symptom onset and with no previous intervention were examined by the International Society for Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision standard ERG. RESULTS: A significant amplitude decline and peak time delay in light-adapted (LA) 3 ERG and LA 30 Hz flicker ERG (p<0.05 for all) was found in the ischaemic CRVO eyes, compared with the non-ischaemic CRVO eyes. The b/a amplitude ratio of dark-adapted (DA) 3 ERG, DA 10 ERG and LA 3 ERG was significantly different between the ischaemic and non-ischaemic groups (p<0.05 for all). Regarding oscillatory potentials (OPs), the amplitudes of OP1, OP2 and OP3 as well as the sum of DA 3 OP1-4 amplitudes (∑OPs) showed significant changes (p<0.01 for all) between two groups. No peak time delay of OPs was found between the ischaemic and non-ischaemic CRVO eyes. CONCLUSION: The amplitude of DA 0.01 ERG, components of LA 3 ERG and LA 30 Hz flicker ERG, and the b/a amplitude ratio could be among the most sensitive indicators in patients with acute ischaemic CRVO. The amplitudes of OP1, OP2, OP3 and ∑OPs in the CRVO eyes were reduced to 40% of the control values, showing that this quantitative method is reliable for detecting ischaemic retinal diseases, even in early stage.

Background: People with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) are contagious, particularly to their household contacts. Their infectivity has been associated with the bacterial load in sputum samples. This study investigated if the bacterial load in sputum samples as quantified by Xpert MTB/RIF and Xpert Ultra is correlated with the extent that latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) occurred in household contacts of people with PTB. Methods: A retrospective study was performed including people with PTB presenting at Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, Barcelona, between 2011 and 2021. Their infection ratio, representing the proportion of household members found with LTBI in contact tracing investigation, was compared with the quantitative results of Xpert MTB/RIF and Xpert Ultra using ordinal regression analysis. Results: A total of 107 people with PTB were included. Among their 398 household contacts, 126 (31.7%) cases of LTBI and 14 cases with active TB disease (3.5%) were reported. Higher bacterial load in Xpert MTB/RIF and Xpert Ultra baseline sputum was significantly associated with increased infection ratios, providing better estimates than conventional acid-fast bacilli (AFB) smear grading. Conclusions: Xpert MTB/RIF and Xpert Ultra could serve as an alternative to AFB sputum-smear grading in determining contact tracing priorities.

Case investigation and contact tracing (CICT) are public health measures that aim to break the chain of pathogen transmission. Changes in viral characteristics of COVID-19 variants have likely affected the effectiveness of CICT programs. We estimated and compared the cases averted in Vermont when the original COVID-19 strain circulated (Nov. 25, 2020-Jan. 19, 2021) with two periods when the Delta strain dominated (Aug. 1-Sept. 25, 2021, and Sept. 26-Nov. 20, 2021). When the original strain circulated, we estimated that CICT prevented 7180 cases (55% reduction in disease burden), compared to 1437 (15% reduction) and 9970 cases (40% reduction) when the Delta strain circulated. Despite the Delta variant being more infectious and having a shorter latency period, CICT remained an effective tool to slow spread of COVID-19; while these viral characteristics did diminish CICT effectiveness, non-viral characteristics had a much greater impact on CICT effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Despite hip function typically deteriorating in the post-collapse stage of osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH), some patients can still demonstrate long-term favorable hip function, a state termed "survival with collapse". This study aims to identify the characteristics of patients suitable for "survival with collapse" in cases of ONFH. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 65 patients (87 hips) diagnosed with post-collapse ONFH for ≥ 3 years (average 9.1 years, range 3-23 years). Hip function was assessed using the Harris Hip Score (HHS). Demographic, clinical, and radiographic data were compared between the favorable group (HHS > 80) and the poor group (HHS ≤ 80). Independent protective factors for hip function were identified by multivariate analysis and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was further applied to evaluate these factors' diagnostic efficacy. RESULTS: The favorable and poor groups included 46 and 41 hips, respectively. Significant differences were found in body mass index (BMI), Association Research Circulation Osseous (ARCO) stage, collapse degree, Japanese Investigation Committee (JIC) classification, necrotic size, and hip subluxation between the two groups (p < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression identified collapse < 3 mm(OR:14.49, 95%CI: 3.52-59.68, p < 0.001), JIC types B (OR: 11.08, 95% CI: 1.07-115.12, p < 0.05) and C1(OR: 5.18, 95% CI: 1.47-18.20, p < 0.05) as independent protective factors for hip function, while BMI (OR: 0.76, 95% CI: 0.59-0.97, p = 0.029) was an independent risk factor. ROC curve analysis demonstrated that both collapse degree (AUC = 0.798, sensitivity = 91.3%, specificity = 68.3%, p < 0.0001) and JIC classification (AUC = 0.787, sensitivity = 80.4%, specificity = 73.2%, p < 0.0001) had satisfactory diagnostic value for hip function. Combining JIC classification and collapse degree (AUC = 0.868, sensitivity = 76.1%, specificity = 85.4%, p < 0.0001) significantly enhanced diagnostic efficacy compared to using either alone (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: In ONFH, femoral head collapse does not necessarily determine a poor prognosis. Patients with mild collapse (< 3 mm) and preserved anterolateral wall are more likely to retain satisfactory hip function, making them candidates for "survival with collapse."

OBJECTIVE: To develop an investigation form for hemodialysis infection outbreak, and to identify sources of outbreak in early stage. METHODS: After an exhaustive literature review, we used the Delphi method to determine the indicators and relative risk scores of the assessment tools through two rounds of specialist consultation and overall consideration of the opinions and suggestions of 18 specialists. RESULTS: A total of 87 studies of hemodialysis infection outbreaks were eligible for inclusion. The mean authority coefficient (Cr) was 0.89. Kendall's W coefficient of the specialist consultation was 0.359 after two rounds of consultation (p <0.005), suggesting that the specialists had similar opinions. Based on 4 primary items and 13 secondary items of the source of hemodialysis infection outbreak, and tripartite distribution characteristics of infected patients, we constructed the investigation form. CONCLUSIONS: The investigation form can be used at the early stage of the cluster of cases, it's a prerequisite for taking effective control measures, avoiding hemodialysis infection outbreak occurrence. However, the effect of the investigation form needs to be further evaluated.

The need for strengthening national capacities for disease prevention, preparedness, and response is increasingly becoming urgent. Central to this is strengthening existing systems and workforce capacity for disease surveillance and disease outbreak response. This study aimed to evaluate the national capacity and needs of veterinary services in Vietnam in animal disease surveillance and outbreak investigation skills. A cross-sectional, convergent, mixed-methods study was conducted between November 2020 and April 2021. An online questionnaire was administered to government field veterinarians, followed by descriptive and multivariable analyses to understand field capacity, specifically levels of experience in outbreak investigation and animal health surveillance. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with various stakeholders in veterinary services and interview transcripts were coded and thematically analyzed. Qualitative results were used to contextualize quantitative findings from the survey. Overall, 178 field veterinary staff completed the online survey, and 25 stakeholders were interviewed. Eighty percent of respondents reported a high priority for further training in both animal disease surveillance and outbreak investigation. Training and competence were more limited at the district and commune levels, highlighting a gap in capacity at the subnational level. Reasons included a lack of in-depth training opportunities, limited access to resources and high staff turnover. Respondents who completed postgraduate qualifications in epidemiology or Field Epidemiology Training Programs were more likely to have higher levels of experience in animal health surveillance and outbreak investigation. This study identified gaps in knowledge and adoption of practices most often related to local-level or less experienced veterinary staff with limited training opportunities in epidemiology. Findings inform the prioritization of training and planning activities to further enhance the national capacity of veterinary services in Vietnam. Underlying explanations for existing gaps in capacity include inequities in skill development and training opportunities across levels of veterinary staff, gaps in the chain of command and unequal funding across provinces.

Contact burns in children are not uncommon and are often due to accidental contact. Medico-legal assessment is of paramount importance in these contexts to identify cases of abuse. In three cases of burns caused by contact with radiators or a portable heater -two accidental and one deliberate- thorough medico-legal assessment, combined with on-site event reconstruction, enabled accurate diagnoses. Accidental burns displayed a 'pattern' compatible with the incandescent instrument but were more irregular, with different depths and in different parts of the body. In contrast, intentional burns were uniform in depth, distribution and localisation, inconsistent with accidental events. In this context, the on-site inspection and direct evaluation of the objects involved were crucial in the medico-legal assessment. These are indispensable elements for a thorough analysis and abuse recognition.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Female choroideremia carriers present with a spectrum of disease severity. Unlike in men, the rate of disease progression has not been well characterised in carriers. This longitudinal study aimed to determine the rate of retinal degeneration in choroideremia carriers, using multimodal imaging and microperimetry. METHODS: Choroideremia carriers previously seen at Oxford Eye Hospital (United Kingdom) between 2012 and 2017 returned for testing between 2015 and 2023, providing up to 11 years' follow-up data. Participants had optical coherence tomography, fundus-tracked microperimetry and fundus autofluorescence (FAF) imaging performed. RESULTS: Thirty-four eyes of 17 choroideremia carriers were examined using multimodal imaging. Median age was 44 (range: 15-73) years at baseline and median follow-up duration was 7 (range: 1-11) years. At baseline, phenotype was classified as fine (n=5 eyes), coarse (n=13 eyes), geographic (n=12 eyes) or male pattern (n=4 eyes). Thirteen patients showed no change in phenotype classification, four showed slight changes associated with choroideremia-related retinal degeneration. Despite this, carriers with severe retinal phenotypes had a statistically significant decline in average retinal sensitivity (-0.7 dB and -0.8 dB per year, respectively, p<0.001), area of geographic loss defined by FAF (+2.5 mm2 and +3.7 mm2 per year, respectively, p<0.001) and thinning of the photoreceptor complex (up to -2.8 microns and -10.3 microns per year, p<0.001). CONCLUSION: Choroideremia carriers, particularly those with severe retinal phenotypes, exhibit progressive retinal degeneration, as evident by multimodal imaging biomarkers and functional testing. Clinicians should not rely on retinal severity classification alone to assess disease progression.

PURPOSE: To compare the diagnostic utility of metagenomic deep sequencing (MDS) to cytology, flow cytometry and gene rearrangement by PCR in ocular samples of patients with suspected vitreoretinal lymphoma (VRL). METHODS: Patients with suspected VRL underwent ocular sampling of one or both eyes at the Emory Eye Center from September 2017 to June 2022. Ocular samples were evaluated with MDS and conventional diagnostics. MDS was performed at the Ralph and Sophie Heintz Laboratory at the F.I. Proctor Foundation. Relevant demographic and clinical data were retrospectively collected from medical records. Patients were diagnosed with VRL based on clinical assessment and conventional diagnostic testing. RESULTS: This study included 13 patients with suspected VRL who underwent diagnostic vitrectomy, including 1 patient who had an additional subretinal biopsy. Six patients (46.2%) were diagnosed with VRL. Among patients diagnosed with VRL, MDS detected pathogenic mutations in 5 out of 6 patients (83.3%) while cytology was positive for VRL in 4 out of 6 patients (66.7%), flow cytometry in 4 out of 4 patients (100.0%) and PCR in 4 out of 4 patients (100.0%). MDS detected mutations in MYD88 in 2 out of 6 patients diagnosed with VRL. In 7 patients (53.8%) not diagnosed with VRL, MDS detected pathogenic lymphoma mutations in 2 patients (28.6%). DISCUSSION: MDS detected pathogenic mutations in five out of six patients diagnosed with VRL, including in two patients with negative cytology, demonstrating its potential to improve diagnostic rates of VRL as an adjunctive test.

Epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) is an arthropod-borne RNA virus in the genus Orbivirus, family Sedoreoviridae. Globally, seven known EHDV serotypes circulate among ruminant hosts and Culicoides species vectors. A variety of domestic and wild ruminant species are susceptible to EHDV infection, but infection outcome is highly variable between species, as well as between individuals of the same species. Thus, this disease system inherently operates at the wildlife-livestock interface. Domestic cattle are important hosts for EHDV, and while inapparent infection is the most common outcome, reports of clinical disease have increased in some parts of the world. However, fatal infection of cattle is rare. Among wildlife, white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are highly susceptible to severe and often fatal disease. Considering the paucity of data and poorly characterized pathology of EHD in cattle, white-tailed deer represent a case study for describing the field signs and necropsy lesions associated with EHD. Here we describe the field signs that commonly define EHD outbreaks in North America, a basic approach to a gross necropsy examination of white-tailed deer, description of the gross lesions that may be present, and diagnostic sample collection. Field investigations of large-scale EHD outbreaks are common in North America. The necropsy examination is an essential tool in the study of disease and when coupled with other disciplines (e.g., virology, immunology, epidemiology) has been fundamentally important to understanding EHD in North America.

Copper catalyzed intramolecular annulation of 2-((2benzylidene-1-phenylhydrazineyl)methyl)pyridine derivatives was described. It was found that Cu(II) is reduced under the reaction condition to Cu(I). Synthesized 1, 2-dihydro [1,2,4] triazinium salt showed fluorescence activity in solid state. On treating with base, an instant increase in fluorescence was observed. A detailed physicochemical assessment underscored the robust DNA-binding prowess of the [1,2,4] triazinium cationic species (C1-C3) via intercalative mechanisms. Notably, binding assays with BSA accentuated the heightened nucleic acid affinity of these cationic species.

Malignant urban gas accidents, accounting for only approximately 1 % of the total gas accidents in China, are responsible for over 50 % of fatalities, thus becoming a major cause of public concern regarding gas safety. A comprehensive understanding of the characteristics of historical accidents is an effective way to prevent and reduce future accidents. In this regard, the study meticulously collects and analyzes all malignant gas accidents that occurred in China from 2013 to 2022. This approach can effectively clarify the focus of gas accident prevention, and also facilitate the implementation of more targeted preventive measures. The study provides diverse perspectives and comprehensive statistics on accidents using 10 variables in 6 dimensions: time (year, month, day, hour), location (province, place), gas source, type, cause, and level. In addition to common quantitative statistics, proportional analyses and visual displays, methods such as contingency tables, t-tests, chi-square tests, and cluster analyses were also used to provide more in-depth analyses and identify more potential patterns. The findings elucidate that: (1) Over the past decade, the yearly distribution of malignant gas accidents in China has been relatively stable; but, individual, particularly major accidents, have significantly influenced the overall severity; (2) June and July are the peak months for such accidents; (3) The most severe accidents occur during 6:00-6:59 a.m., 11:00-11:59 a.m., and 11:00-11:59 p.m.; (4) Central and eastern provinces are the epicenters of malignant gas accidents; (5) Residential accommodations, and restaurants and shops are frequently affected; (6) Liquefied petroleum gas, despite comprising merely 8.7 % of the aggregate supply, is implicated in over half of the malignant occurrences and associated fatalities; (7) Explosions account for approximately 78.49 % of these accidents; (8) Among the accident causes, violations of rules by workers stands as the foremost contributor; (9) Malignant gas accidents are generally larger accident. Moreover, this manuscript delves into the underlying reasons behind each noteworthy statistical trend and analyzes the critical issues facing the gas industry. This investigation not only bridges the gap in the statistical profiling of malignant gas accidents within China but also furnishes invaluable insights that may guide preventive measures against urban gas-related disasters. Furthermore, the methodological approaches and variable selections explored in this study lay a robust foundation for future endeavors in the realm of malignant gas accident management research and practice.

This research highlights the underestimated significance of cigarette paper as evidence at crime scenes. The primary objective is to distinguish cigarette paper from similar-looking alternatives, addressing the first research objective. The second objective involves identifying cigarette paper brands using attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and machine learning (ML) algorithms. Accurate differentiation of cigarette paper from normal paper is emphasized. ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, coupled with principal component analysis (PCA) for dimensionality reduction, is employed for brand identification. Among fifteen ML algorithms compared, the CatBoost classifier excels for both objectives. This research presents a non-destructive, effective method for studying cigarette paper, contributing valuable insights to crime scene investigations.

For the past decade, illicitly manufactured fentanyl has been a primary contributor in drug overdose deaths regardless of age. The pediatric population is particularly vulnerable to fentanyl exposure, yet there are limited case reports involving this population. Postmortem cases from 2019 to 2023 were retrospectively analyzed to determine the prevalence of fentanyl in decedents between 0 and 12 years of age. Over this time frame, the fentanyl positivity rate increased from 2.6 to 6.2% (n = 632). The most commonly reported age group was 0-4 years, with a peak around 1 year of age for toddlers. Fentanyl concentrations in blood (n = 573) ranged from 0.19 to 360 ng/mL (mean 18 ng/mL, median 6.9 ng/mL). Polydrug use was present in 428 cases; midazolam (n = 96) and methamphetamine (n = 66) were the most common drugs found concurrently in blood with fentanyl, followed by markers of illicitly manufactured fentanyl, such as xylazine (n = 23), para-fluorofentanyl (n = 18), and acetyl fentanyl (n = 17). This report contrasts the differences in postmortem pediatric fentanyl toxicology results for three groups of case histories: likely medical intervention (n = 113), pregnancy/birth related (n = 136), and inadvertent/intentional exposure (n = 196). Overall, this study provides a retrospective review of postmortem pediatric fentanyl concentrations in a variety of biological matrices and highlights the need for comprehensive toxicology testing in postmortem pediatric casework.

The cyclic oxidation behavior of an additive manufactured CoCrMo alloy with 0.14 wt.% C was investigated at 914 °C for 32 cycles, each lasting 10 h, resulting in a total exposure time of 320 h. The oxidation rate was assessed for mass gain after finishing each 40 h oxidation cycle. It was experimentally determined that the oxidative process at 914 °C of this CoCrMo alloy follows a parabolic law, with the process being fast at the beginning and slowing down after the first 40 h. The microstructural analysis revealed that in the as-printed state, the phases developed were primarily the γ matrix and minor traces of ε phase. The oxidative process ensured an increase in the ε phase and precipitation of carbides which produced a 12% increase in the material's hardness after the first 40 h of exposure at 914 °C. The oxidation process led to the development of an oxide scale comprising a dense Cr2O3 layer and a porous layer of CoCr2O4 spinel, the latter spalling after the 240 h of exposure. Despite this spallation, the oxide scale continued to develop in the presence of O, Cr, and Co. The experimental analysis provided valuable insights regarding the material's behavior under prolonged exposure at high temperature in air, demonstrating its suitability as a candidate for additive manufactured mandrels used for bending metallic pipe fitting elbows.

Fungal infections pose an increasing threat to public health. New pathogens and changing epidemiology are a pronounced risk for nosocomial outbreaks. To investigate clonal transmission between patients and trace the source, genotyping is required. In the last decades, various typing assays have been developed and applied to different medically important fungal species. While these different typing methods will be briefly discussed, this review will focus on the development and application of short tandem repeat (STR) genotyping. This method relies on the amplification and comparison of highly variable STR markers between isolates. For most common fungal pathogens, STR schemes were developed and compared to other methods, like multilocus sequence typing (MLST), amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and whole genome sequencing (WGS) single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis. The pros and cons of STR typing as compared to the other methods are discussed, as well as the requirements for the development of a solid STR typing assay. The resolution of STR typing, in general, is higher than MLST and AFLP, with WGS SNP analysis being the gold standard when it comes to resolution. Although most modern laboratories are capable to perform STR typing, little progress has been made to standardize typing schemes. Allelic ladders, as developed for Aspergillus fumigatus, facilitate the comparison of STR results between laboratories and develop global typing databases. Overall, STR genotyping is an extremely powerful tool, often complimentary to whole genome sequencing. Crucial details for STR assay development, its applications and merit are discussed in this review.

Since 1995, national forensic DNA databases have used a maximum number of contributors, and a minimum number of loci to reduce the risk of providing false leads. DNA profiles of biological traces that do not meet these criteria cannot be loaded into these databases. In 2023, about 10 % of more than 15,000 trace DNA profiles analyzed in western Switzerland were not compared at the national level, even though they were considered to be interpretable, mainly because they contained the DNA from more than two persons. In this situation, police services can request local comparisons with DNA profiles of known persons and/or with other traces, but this occurs in only a small proportion of cases, so that DNA mixtures are rarely used to help detect potential series. The development of probabilistic genotyping software and its associated tools have made possible the efficient performance of this type of comparison, which is based on likelihood ratios (LR) rather than on the number of shared alleles. To highlight potential common contributors for investigation and intelligence purposes, the present study used the mixture-to-mixture tool of the software STRmix v2.7 to compare 235 DNA profiles that cannot be searched the Swiss DNA database. These DNA profiles originated from traces collected by six different police services in 2021 and 2022. Traces were selected by the police based on information that indicated that they were from potential series. Associations between profiles were compared with expected investigative associations to define the value of this approach. Among the 27,495 pairwise comparisons of DNA profiles, 88 pairs (0.3 %) showed at least one potential common contributor when using a LR threshold of 1000. Of these 88 pairs, 60 (68.2 %) were qualified by the police services as "expected" (60/88), 22 (25.0 %) as "possible", and six (6.8 %) as "unexpected". Although it is important to consider the limits of this approach (e.g., adventitious or missed associations, cost/benefit evaluation, integration of DNA mixture comparison in the process), these findings indicate that non CODIS loadable DNA mixtures could provide police agencies with information concerning potential series at both the local and national level.

In February 2023, a report of morbidity and mortality in waterbirds triggered a collaborative regional wildlife disease outbreak investigation and response, led by Parks Victoria. Triage, rehabilitation and diagnosis of sick and dead birds were undertaken by Zoos Victoria (ZV), Agriculture Victoria, Vets for Compassion, Wildlife Victoria and Melbourne Veterinary School (MVS). The field response focused on collection of sick and dead birds for wildlife welfare, for diagnosis, and to reduce environmental contamination. Botulism was suspected, based on clinical signs and lack of significant gross pathology, and this diagnosis was confirmed by PCR testing. Low pathogenicity avian influenza (LPAI) viruses non H5 or H7 were detected in two birds and ruled out in all in others tested. These incidental, non-clinical LPAI detections are considered part of the natural wild bird virus community in Australia. A number of elements contributed to the collaborative effort. Regional individuals had the necessary connections for reporting, collecting and transporting birds. There was rapid determination by the Victorian Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) that Parks Victoria, as the land managers, should lead the response. Zoos Victoria provided capacity and expertise in wildlife triage and rehabilitation, and Agriculture Victoria, ZV and MVS were responsible for veterinary management of the response and diagnosis. Field investigation and response were conducted by Parks Victoria, Agriculture Victoria, MVS and veterinary teams from Vets for Compassion and Wildlife Victoria. Wildlife Health Australia (WHA) provided guidance and information, approved National Significant Disease Investigation Program funding and captured the event in the national wildlife health information database. Communication and media were important for community understanding of the event.

Background: Homicide by drowning in adults is rare. Usually, marks of violence are found on both the victim and the perpetrator, unless the victim was under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or was unexpectedly forced or dragged into the water. Indeed, many cases of drowning in adults are believed to be accidental, but they may be the result of drunken fights or attempts to make the death appear ac-cidental. In order to define the manner of death, cooperation between the forensic pathologist and the investigators is mandatory. Indeed, the autopsy is important to distinguish homicide by drowning from other kinds of drowning. The purpose of this study is to highlight the features of homicide by drowning. Materials and Methods: Literature search was conducted using PubMed databases, using the following keywords: "(homicide) and (drowning)". 3 articles were included in the systematic review, in addition to 3 cases observed in our institute. Conclusions: Both external examination and autopsy findings and the results of the investigation are essential to differentiate a homicide by drowning from accidental ones. The low specificity and variability of external and internal findings, the possibility of atypical asphyctic and nonasphyctic pathophysiological mechanisms, whose nature is not detectable at postmortem examinations, makes the diagnosis of cause of death difficult and often based on exclusion criteria only. In complex cases only using a strict forensic method allows to use the essential tools to identify the real manner of death.
