RESUMEN

Ketoprofen (KET), as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug frequently detected in aqueous environments, is a threat to human health due to its accumulation and low biodegradability, which requires the transformation and degradation of KET in aqueous environments. In this paper, the reaction process of ozone-initiated KET degradation in water was investigated using density functional theory (DFT) method at the M06-2X/6-311++g(3df,2p)//M06-2X/6-31+g(d,p) level. The detailed reaction path of KET ozonation is proposed. The thermodynamic results show that ozone-initiated KET degradation is feasible. Under ultraviolet irradiation, the reaction of ozone with water can also produce OH radicals (HO·) that can react with KET. The degradation reaction of KET caused by HO· was further studied. The kinetic calculation illustrates that the reaction rate (1.99 × 10-1 (mol/L)-1 sec-1) of KET ozonation is relatively slow, but the reaction rate of HO· reaction is relatively high, which can further improve the degradation efficiency. On this basis, the effects of pollutant concentration, ozone concentration, natural organic matter, and pH value on degradation efficiency under UV/O3 process were analyzed. The ozonolysis reaction of KET is not sensitive to pH and is basically unaffected. Finally, the toxicity prediction of oxidation compounds produced by degradation reaction indicates that most of the degradation products are harmless, and a few products containing benzene rings are still toxic and have to be concerned. This study serves as a theoretical basis for analyzing the migration and transformation process of anti-inflammatory compounds in the water environment.

Introducción: Las hospitalizaciones por Ambulatory Care Sensitive Conditions es un indicador que mide la utilización de los servicios hospitalarios por problemas de salud que podrían haber sido prevenidos en el primer nivel de atención. El concepto se refiere a los procesos en que la atención ambulatoria efectiva puede ayudar a disminuir los riesgos de hospitalización, en un segundo nivel de atención. El objetivo del estudio fue construir y validar una lista uruguaya de problemas de salud sensibles a cuidados ambulatorios (PSSCA) según CIE-10. Metodología: Para la construcción de la lista inicial de códigos de PSSCA se realizó una revisión de los listados existentes y se propuso un listado inicial que fue validado a través del Método Delphi. Se propone un listado de 99 códigos diagnósticos de PSSCA adaptado a nuestro entono sanitario. Los mismos permiten identificar y cuantificar problemas de salud que pueden producir hospitalizaciones potenciamente evitables mediante cuidados ambulatorios accesibes y oportunos en el primer nivel de atención. Resultados: Se conformó un panel de 12 expertos. A partir de los datos obtenidos, considerando los 99 diagnósticos clasificados por CIE-10, éstos se pueden subclasificar en función de si la patología es infecciosa o no, obteniendo un resultado general de 62 patologías en un total de 99 que pueden ser clasificadas como infecciosas, lo que se corresponde a un 62 %. Discusión: De la comparación de la lista uruguaya de PSSCA a la que hemos arribado y las listas validadas utilizadas para la construcción inicial del listado de patologías propuesto, podemos decir que la primera presenta un mayor porcentaje de coincidencia con la lista de patologías de Bello Horizonte. Podemos mencionar que la mayoría de los problemas de salud identificados con base en el listado de PSSCA, son sensibles de ser resueltos con la atención primaria oportuna y de calidad que podría evitar o disminuir de una manera significativa su hospitalización. Conclusiones: Este trabajo describe el proceso de construcción y validación de una lista de códigos de PSSCA adaptados al contexto uruguayo a través del método Delphi. Hemos arribado a un listado que comprende un total de 99 diagnósticos, agrupadas en un total de diecinueve categorías que considera la especificidad del contexto uruguayo del indicador.


Introduction: Hospitalizations for Ambulatory Care Sensitive Conditions is an indicator that measures the use of hospital services for health problems that could have been prevented at the first level of care. The concept refers to the processes in which effective outpatient care can help reduce the risks of hospitalization, at a second level of care. The objective of the study was to build and validate a Uruguayan list of health problems sensitive to outpatient care (PSS-CA) according to ICD-10. Methodology: To construct the initial list of PSSCA codes, a review of the existing lists was carried out and an initial list was proposed that was validated through the Delphi Method. A list of 99 PSSCA diagnostic codes adapted to our healthcare environment is proposed. They make it possible to identify and quantify health problems that can lead to potentially avoidable hospitalizations through accessible and timely outpatient care at the first level of care. Results: A panel of 12 experts was formed. From the data obtained, considering the 99 diagnoses classified by ICD-10, these can be subclassified depending on whether the pathology is infectious or not, obtaining a general result of 62 pathologies in a total of 99 that can be classified as infectious, which corresponds to 62%. Discussion: From the comparison of the Uruguayan list of PSSCA that we have arrived at and the validated lists used for the initial construction of the proposed list of pathologies, we can say that the first presents a higher percentage of coincidence with the list of pathologies of Bello Horizonte . We can mention that most of the health problems identified based on the PSSCA list are sensitive to being resolved with timely and quality primary care that could prevent or significantly reduce hospitalization. Conclusions: This work describes the process of construction and validation of a list of PSSCA codes adapted to the Uruguayan context through the Delphi method. We have arrived at a list that includes a total of 99 diagnoses, grouped into a total of nineteen categories that consider the specificity of the Uruguayan context of the indicator.


Introdução: As Internações por Condições Sensíveis à Atenção Ambulatorial são um indicador que mede a utilização de serviços hospitalares para problemas de saúde que poderiam ter sido evitados no primeiro nível de atenção. O conceito refere-se aos processos em que um atendimento ambulatorial eficaz pode auxiliar na redução dos riscos de internação, em um segundo nível de atenção. O objetivo do estudo foi construir e validar uma lista uruguaia de problemas de saúde sensíveis à atenção ambulatorial (PSS-CA) segundo a CID-10. Metodologia: Para construir a lista inicial de códigos PSSCA foi realizada uma revisão das listas existentes e foi proposta uma lista inicial que foi validada através do Método Delphi. É proposta uma lista de 99 códigos de diagnóstico PSSCA adaptados ao nosso ambiente de saúde. Permitem identificar e quantificar problemas de saúde que podem levar a hospitalizações potencialmente evitáveis ​​através de cuidados ambulatórios acessíveis e oportunos no primeiro nível de cuidados. Resultados: Foi formado um painel de 12 especialistas. A partir dos dados obtidos, considerando os 99 diagnósticos classificados pela CID-10, estes podem ser subclassificados consoante a patologia seja infecciosa ou não, obtendo-se um resultado geral de 62 patologias num total de 99 que podem ser classificadas como infecciosas, o que corresponde para 62%. Discussão: A partir da comparação da lista uruguaia de PSSCA a que chegamos e das listas validadas utilizadas para a construção inicial da lista de patologias proposta, podemos dizer que a primeira apresenta um maior percentual de coincidência com a lista de patologias de Belo Horizonte. Podemos mencionar que a maioria dos problemas de saúde identificados com base na lista PSSCA são sensíveis para serem resolvidos com cuidados primários oportunos e de qualidade que possam prevenir ou reduzir significativamente a hospitalização. Conclusões: Este trabalho descreve o processo de construção e validação de uma lista de códigos PSSCA adaptados ao contexto uruguaio através do método Delphi. Chegamos a uma lista que inclui um total de 99 diagnósticos, agrupados em um total de dezenove categorias que consideram a especificidade do contexto uruguaio do indicador.

Previous studies have highlighted the role of three quantitative trait loci (QTL, i.e. 'qT1', 'qF11' and 'qF17') in partial resistance to apple scab. Underlying molecular mechanisms of these loci are yet unknown. Exploring differential gene expression between apple genotypes carrying contrasting combinations of these QTLs could depict original candidate genes and pathways implicated. We therefore carried out RNA sequencing just before and five days after inoculation of the pathogenic fungi Venturia inaequalis, in sixteen genotypes from a pseudo-F1 progeny segregating for resistant or susceptible alleles of the three QTLs. The current dataset includes i) transcriptomic profile description, ii) analysis of differentially expressed genes related to none or combined QTLs, infected or not with Venturia inaequalis and iii) disease phenotyping of the same genetic materials. The raw data files have been deposited in the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) repository with the accession number GSE250309. These outputs represent the first step towards elucidating the genetic basis of quantitative apple scab resistance. In the long term, this data set will improve apple breeding strategies on how to combine qualitative (used so far) and quantitative resistances to apple scab, with the aim of diversifying selective pressures on the pathogen.

Background: Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is a common complication of neurosurgery. Craniocerebral trauma is the likely cause. There are no reports relating CSDH with nephrotic syndrome. Its pathogenesis is very rare, and there are no previous reports on treatments for this disease. We report a case of chronic subdural hematoma that may be caused by nephrotic syndrome and review the previous literature on this subject. Case summary: We report a rare case of chronic subdural hematoma that may be caused by nephrotic syndrome. After the patient was admitted to the hospital, relevant laboratory tests were conducted, and a large amount of protein was detected in the patient's urine, indicating hypoproteinaemia and hyperlipidemia. The patient was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome. After the exclusion of related surgical contraindications, the patient underwent trepanation and drainage of the chronic subdural hematoma. Subsequent treatment with oral atorvastatin was provided after surgery. The patient was transferred to the nephrology department for further treatment of nephrotic syndrome if his neurological condition improved. No neurological sequelae were detected at the follow-up visit 3 months after the operation. Conclusion: Chronic subdural hematomas are rarely caused by nephrotic syndrome. Trepanation and drainage may be considered for patients confirmed to have adequate hematoma liquefaction on imaging and who can tolerate craniotomy. Atorvastatin should be supplemented as prophylactic treatment after the operation. Nephrotic syndrome should be treated as soon as the patient's neurological condition is stable.

Coronary heart disease is a prevalent cardiovascular ailment globally, with myocardial infarction (MI) being one of its most severe manifestations. The morbidity and mortality of MI are escalating, showing an increasing trend among younger, highly educated individuals, thereby posing a serious threat to public health. Currently, thrombolysis, percutaneous coronary intervention, and coronary artery bypass grafting are the primary clinical treatments for MI. Although these methods significantly reduce patient mortality, complications often result in poor prognoses. Due to limitations in chemical synthetic drug research, the focus has shifted towards developing herbs based on natural substances. Natural medicines represent a novel approach for safer and more effective MI management and treatment. They can control multiple pathogenic variables by targeting various pathways and systems. This paper investigates the molecular mechanisms of MI and evaluates the application of natural products and medicinal plants in MI treatment over the past 5 years, demonstrating their specific good therapeutic potential and superior tolerance. These natural therapies have been shown to mitigate myocardial cell damage caused by MI through mechanisms such as oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, myocardial fibrosis, autophagy, endoplasmic reticulum stress, mitophagy, and pyroptosis. This review offers the latest insights into the application of natural products and medicinal plants in MI treatment, elucidating their mechanisms of action and serving as an important reference for MI prevention.

Nowadays, human activities intensified the combined pollution of fluoride and lead in acidic tea garden soil. The key to eliminating this combined pollution is to immobilize pollutants simultaneously, thus preventing their migration from tea garden soil to tea trees. In this paper, the natural product bayberry tannin was employed as raw material to fabricate functional materials (TF-Zr) for simultaneous adsorption of fluorine (F) and lead (Pb) in water and soil by the reactivity of tannin with Pb2+ and the affinity of Zr with F. SEM-Mapping, EDS, FT-IR, XPS were utilized to probe the immobilization mechanisms. The results showed that TF-Zr could simultaneously and efficiently adsorb F- and Pb2+ from water with the adsorption capacity of 5.02 mg/g (Pb) and 4.55 mg/g (F). The adsorption processes were both in accordance with the proposed secondary kinetic adsorption model. Besides, the presence of F- promoted the adsorption of Pb2+ by TF-Zr. The materials were applied into tea garden soil to explore its effect on the variation of F and Pb forms in the soil. It was found that the proportion of water-soluble fluorine, exchangeable fluorine and exchangeable lead in the tea garden soil decreased significantly, while the proportion of residual fluorine and lead increased evidently, illustrating TF-Zr possessed eximious fixation effect on the highly reactive fluorine and lead in the soil and facilitated their conversion to the more stable residue state. Therefore, TF-Zr can be used for the efficient and simultaneous immobilization of fluorine and lead in water and tea garden soil.

Cervical traction is a common and effective treatment for degenerative disk diseases and pain in the cervical spine. However, the manual or mechanical methods of applying traction to the head-neck are limited due to variability in the applied forces and orientation of the head-neck relative to the shoulder during the procedure. Current robotic neck braces are not designed to provide independent rotation angles and independent vertical translation, or traction, to the brace end-effector connected to the head, making them unsuitable for traction application. This work proposes a novel architecture of a robotic neck brace, which can provide vertical traction to the head while keeping the head in a prescribed orientation, with flexion and lateral bending angles. In this paper, the kinematics of the end-effector attached to the head relative to a coordinate frame on the shoulders are described as well as the velocity kinematics and force control. The paper also describes benchtop experiments designed to validate the position control and the ability of the brace to provide a vertical traction force. It was shown that the maximum achievable end-effector orientations are 16° in flexion, 13.9° in extension, and ± 6.5° in lateral bending. The kinematic model of the active brace was validated using an independent motion capture system with a maximum root mean square error of 2.41°. In three different orientations of the end-effector, neutral, flexed, and laterally bent, the brace was able to provide a consistent upward traction force during intermittent force application. In these configurations, the force error has standard deviations of 0.55, 0.29, and 0.07N, respectively. This work validates the mechanism's ability to achieve a range of head orientations and provide consistent upward traction force in these orientations, making it a promising intervention tool in cases of cervical disk degeneration.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is highly prevalent in the Australian community, ranking amongst the highest globally. The consequences of AF are significant. Stroke, dementia and heart failure risk are increased substantially, hospitalisations are amongst the highest for all cardiovascular causes, and Australians living with AF suffer from substantial symptoms that impact quality of life. Australian research has made a significant impact at the global level in advancing the care of patients living with AF. However, new strategies are required to reduce the growing incidence of AF and its associated healthcare demand. The Australian Cardiovascular Alliance (ACvA) has led the development of an arrhythmia clinical theme with the objective of tackling major research priorities to achieve a reduction in AF burden across Australia. In this summary, we highlight these research priorities with particular focus on the strengths of Australian research and the strategies needed to move forward in reducing incident AF and improving outcomes for those who live with this chronic condition.

Endometriosis is a prevalent gynecological disorder characterized by the ectopic growth of endometrial-like tissue outside the uterus. This condition poses significant challenges due to its chronic nature, debilitating symptoms such as pelvic pain and infertility, and substantial impact on quality of life. Central to the pathogenesis of endometriosis are inflammatory mechanisms that perpetuate tissue proliferation, adhesion formation, and immune dysregulation within the pelvic cavity. Inflammation plays a pivotal role in the development and progression of endometriosis, influencing the severity of symptoms and complications associated with the disease. Dysregulated immune responses contribute to the persistence of ectopic endometrial implants, exacerbating pelvic pain and other symptoms experienced by affected individuals. Moreover, the inflammatory milieu created by endometriotic lesions disrupts normal ovarian function, impairs follicular development, and compromises reproductive outcomes, thereby posing challenges to fertility. This review comprehensively explores the inflammatory mechanisms underlying endometriosis and their implications for fertility. Synthesizing current research and clinical insights elucidates the intricate interplay between inflammation, disease progression, and reproductive health outcomes. Understanding these complex interactions is essential for developing targeted diagnostic strategies and optimizing therapeutic approaches tailored to alleviate symptoms and improve fertility outcomes in individuals with endometriosis. Ultimately, this review aims to enhance the understanding of endometriosis pathophysiology, inform clinical practice, and stimulate further research to advance personalized care and management strategies for this challenging condition.

Staphylococcus aureus, a notorious pathogen with versatile virulence, poses a significant challenge to current antibiotic treatments due to its ability to develop resistance mechanisms against a variety of clinically relevant antibiotics. In this comprehensive review, we carefully dissect the resistance mechanisms employed by S. aureus against various antibiotics commonly used in clinical settings. The article navigates through intricate molecular pathways, elucidating the mechanisms by which S. aureus evades the therapeutic efficacy of antibiotics, such as ß-lactams, vancomycin, daptomycin, linezolid, etc. Each antibiotic is scrutinised for its mechanism of action, impact on bacterial physiology, and the corresponding resistance strategies adopted by S. aureus. By synthesising the knowledge surrounding these resistance mechanisms, this review aims to serve as a comprehensive resource that provides a foundation for the development of innovative therapeutic strategies and alternative treatments for S. aureus infections. Understanding the evolving landscape of antibiotic resistance is imperative for devising effective countermeasures in the battle against this formidable pathogen.

Established as a plant macronutrient, potassium (K) substantially bestows plant growth and thus, global food production. It is absorbed by plants as potassium cation (K+) from soil solution, which is enriched through slow-release from soil minerals or addition of soluble fertilizers. Contribution of bioavailable K+ from soil is usually insignificant (< 2 %), although the earth's crust is rich in K-bearing minerals. However, K is fixed largely in interlayer spaces of K-bearing minerals, which can be released by K-solubilizing bacteria (KSB) such as Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Enterobacter, and Acidithiobacillus. The underlying mechanisms of K dissolution by KSB include acidolysis, ion exchange reactions, chelation, complexolysis, and release of various organic and inorganic acids such as citric, oxalic, acetic, gluconic, and tartaric acids. These acids cause disintegration of K-bearing minerals and bring K+ into soil solution that becomes available to the plants. Current literature review updates the scientific information about microbial species, factors, and mechanisms governing the bio-intrusion of K-bearing minerals. Moreover, it explores the potential of KSB not only for K-solubilization but also to enhance bioavailability of phosphorus, nitrogen, and micronutrients, as well as its other beneficial impact on plant growth. Thus, in the context of sustainable agricultural production and global food security, utilization of KSB may facilitate plant nutrient availability, conserve natural resources, and reduce environmental impacts caused by chemical fertilizers.

Emerging pollutants such as antibiotics have aroused great concern in recent years. However, the knowledge of low concentration-induced hormesis was not well understood. This study evaluated and quantified hormetic effects of ofloxacin on Chlorella pyrenoidosa. LogNormal model predicted the maximal non-effect concentration was 0.13 mg/L and 2.96 mg/L at 3 and 21 d, respectively. The sensitive alterations in chlorophyll fluorescence suggested PSII was the main target. Transcriptomics revealed ofloxacin inhibited genes related to photosynthetic system while the cyclic electron around PSI decreased the pH value in stroma side and stimulated photoprotection via up-regulating psbS. The stimulation in citrate cycle pathway met the urgent requirements of energy for DNA replication and repair. In addition, the negative feedback of G3P in glycolysis pathway inhibited Calvin cycle. The degradation products illustrated the occurrence of multiple detoxification mechanisms such as demethylation and ring-opening. The mobilization of cytochrome P450 generated the constant detoxication of ofloxacin while glutathione was consumptively involved in biological binding. This study provided new insights into the molecular mechanisms of antibiotic-induced hormesis in microalgae.

Anthropogenically induced changes to the natural world are increasingly exposing organisms to stimuli and stress beyond that to which they are adapted. In aquatic systems, it is thought that certain life stages are more vulnerable than others, with embryos being flagged as highly susceptible to environmental stressors. Interestingly, evidence from across a wide range of taxa suggests that aquatic embryos can hatch prematurely, potentially as an adaptive response to external stressors, despite the potential for individual costs linked with underdeveloped behavioural and/or physiological functions. However, surprisingly little research has investigated the prevalence, causes and consequences of premature hatching, and no compilation of the literature exists. Here, we review what is known about premature hatching in aquatic embryos and discuss how this phenomenon is likely to become exacerbated with anthropogenically induced global change. Specifically, we (1) review the mechanisms of hatching, including triggers for premature hatching in experimental and natural systems; (2) discuss the potential implications of premature hatching at different levels of biological organisation from individuals to ecosystems; and (3) outline knowledge gaps and future research directions for understanding the drivers and consequences of premature hatching. We found evidence that aquatic embryos can hatch prematurely in response to a broad range of abiotic (i.e. temperature, oxygen, toxicants, light, pH, salinity) and biotic (i.e. predators, pathogens) stressors. We also provide empirical evidence that premature hatching appears to be a common response to rapid thermal ramping across fish species. We argue that premature hatching represents a fascinating yet untapped area of study, and the phenomenon may provide some additional resilience to aquatic communities in the face of ongoing global change.

Hesperetin is a flavonoid compound naturally occurring in the peel of Citrus fruits from the Rutaceae family. Previous studies have demonstrated that hesperetin exhibits various pharmacological effects, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, antioxidative, anti-aging, and neuroprotective properties. In recent years, with the increasing prevalence of diseases and the rising awareness of traditional Chinese medicine, hesperetin has garnered growing attention for its wide-ranging pharmacological effects. To substantiate its health benefits and elucidate potential mechanisms, knowledge of pharmacokinetics is crucial. However, the limited solubility of hesperetin restricts its bioavailability, thereby diminishing its efficacy as a beneficial health agent. To enhance the bioavailability of hesperetin, various novel formulations have been developed, including nanoparticles, liposomes, and cyclodextrin inclusion complexes. This article reviews recent advances in the pharmacokinetics of hesperetin and methods to improve its bioavailability, as well as its pharmacological effects and mechanisms, aiming to provide a theoretical basis for clinical applications.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), known as "forever chemicals," are synthetic chemicals which have been used since the 1940s. Given their remarkable thermostability and chemical stability, PFAS have been widely utilized in commercial products, including textiles, surfactants, food packages, nonstick coatings, and fire-fighting foams. Thus, PFAS are widely distributed worldwide and have been detected in human urine, blood, breast milk, tissues and other substances. Growing concerns over the risks of PFAS, including their toxicity and carcinogenicity, have attracted people's attention. Recent reviews have predominantly emphasized advancements in the detection, adsorption, and degradation of PFAS through their chemical structures and toxic properties; however, further examination of the literature is needed to determine the link between PFAS exposure and cancer risk. Here, we introduced different PFAS detection methods based on sensors and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Then, we discussed epidemiological investigations on PFAS levels and cancer risks in recent years, as well as the mechanisms underlying the carcinogenesis. Finally, we proposed the "4C principles" for ongoing exploration and refinement in this field. This review highlights PFAS-cancer associations to fill knowledge gaps and provide evidence-based strategies for future research.

Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) is an eco-friendly disinfectant gaining attention. This study examined the influence of metal ions (Co(II), Cu(II), Fe(II)) on PMS disinfection with chloride ions (Cl-) against waterborne microorganisms, encompassing both bacteria and fungal spores. The findings elucidated that metal ions augment the inactivation of bacteria in the PMS/Cl- system while concurrently impeding the inactivation of fungal spores. Specifically, the PMS/Co(II)/Cl- process increased E. coli inactivation rates by 2.25 and 2.75 times compared to PMS/Co(II) and PMS/Cl-, respectively. Conversely, PMS/Me(II)/Cl- generally exhibited a diminished inactivation capacity against the three fungal spores compared to PMS/Cl-, albeit surpassing the efficacy of PMS/Me(II). For instance, the inactivation levels of A. niger by PMS/Cl-, PMS/Cu(II)/Cl-, and PMS/Cu(II) are 4.47-log, 1.92-log, and 0.11-log, respectively. Notably, fungal spores demonstrated a substantially higher resistance to disinfectants compared to bacteria. Differences in microbial susceptibility were linked to cell wall structure, composition, antioxidant defenses, and reactive species generation, such as hydroxyl radicals (•OH), sulfate radicals (SO4•-), and reactive chlorine species (RCS). This study demonstrated the novel and unique phenomenon of metal ions' dual role in modulating the PMS/Cl- disinfection process, which has not been reported before and has important implications for the field of water treatment.

This literature review is to present a new direction in developing better treatment or preventive measures. The larger the body of an organism, the more numerous the cells, which theoretically lead to a higher risk of cancer. However, observational studies suggest the lack of correlation between body size and cancer risk, which is known as Peto's paradox. The corollary of Peto's paradox is that large organisms must be cancer-resistant. Further investigation of the anti-cancer mechanisms in each species could be potentially rewarding, and how the anti-cancer mechanisms found in wild animals can help influence and develop more effective cancer treatment in humans is the main focus of this literature review. Due to a lack of research and understanding of the exact molecular mechanisms of the researched species, only a few (Elephants and rodents) that have been extensively researched have made substantive contributions to human oncology. A new research direction is to investigate the positively selective genes that are related to cancer resistance and see if homologous genes are presented in humans. Despite the great obstacle of applying anti-cancer mechanisms to the human body from phylogenetically distant species, this research direction of gaining insights through investigating cancer-resisting evolutionary adaptations in wild animals has great potential in human oncology research.

Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is a strong oxidizing agent and an efficient disinfectant. Due to its broad-spectrum bactericidal properties, good inactivation effect on the vast majority of bacteria and pathogenic microorganisms, low resistance to drugs, and low generation of halogenated by-products, chlorine dioxide is widely used in fields such as water purification, food safety, medical and public health, and living environment. This review introduced the properties and application status of chlorine dioxide, compared the action mode, advantages and disadvantages of various disinfectants. The mechanism of chlorine dioxide inactivating bacteria, fungi and viruses were reviewed. The lethal target of chlorine dioxide to bacteria and fungi is to destroy the structure of cell membrane, change the permeability of cell membrane, and make intracellular substances flow out, leading to their death. The lethal targets for viruses are the destruction of viral protein capsids and the degradation of RNA fragments. The purpose of this review is to provide more scientific guidance for the application of chlorine dioxide disinfectants.

This review delves into the intrinsic attributes of organic compounds and their impact on battery performance, mainly focusing on the alteration of ion interactions and charge storage mechanisms at the active sites. The ultimate aim is to propose innovative design approaches for AIBs that overcome the constraints associated with various types of organic materials. The review also discusses the application of advanced analytical tools, providing insights to better understand the electrochemical process of AIBs.

Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning presents a substantial public health challenge that necessitates the identification of its pathological mechanisms and therapeutic targets. CO toxicity arises from tissue hypoxia-ischemia secondary to carboxyhemoglobin formation, and cellular damage mediated by CO at the cellular level. The mitochondria are the major targets of neuronal damage caused by CO. Under normal physiological conditions, mitochondria produce reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are byproducts of aerobic metabolism. While low ROS levels are crucial for essential cellular functions, including signal transduction, differentiation, responses to hypoxia and immunity, transcriptional regulation, and autophagy, excess ROS become pathological and exacerbate CO poisoning. This review presents the evidence of elevated ROS being associated with the progression of CO poisoning. Antioxidant treatments targeting ROS removal have been proven effective in mitigating CO poisoning, underscoring their therapeutic potential. In this review, we highlight the latest advances in the understanding of the role and the clinical implications of ROS in CO poisoning. We focus on cellular sources of ROS, the molecular mechanisms underlying mitochondrial oxidative stress, and potential therapeutic strategies for targeting ROS in CO poisoning.
