Purpose: Spectral-domain OCT angiography (SD-OCTA) scans were tested in an algorithm developed for use with swept-source OCT angiography (SS-OCTA) scans to determine if SD-OCTA scans yielded similar results for the detection and measurement of persistent choroidal hypertransmission defects (hyperTDs). Design: Retrospective study. Participants: Forty pairs of scans from 32 patients with late-stage nonexudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Methods: Patients underwent both SD-OCTA and SS-OCTA imaging at the same visit using the 6 × 6 mm OCTA scan patterns. Using a semiautomatic algorithm that helped with outlining the hyperTDs, 2 graders independently validated persistent hyperTDs, which are defined as having a greatest linear dimension ≥250 µm on the en face images generated using a slab extending from 64 to 400 µm beneath Bruch's membrane. The number of lesions and square root (sqrt) total area of the hyperTDs were obtained from the algorithm using each imaging method. Main Outcome Measures: The mean sqrt area measurements and the number of hyperTDs were compared. Results: The number of lesions and sqrt total area of the hyperTDs were highly concordant between the 2 instruments (rc = 0.969 and rc = 0.999, respectively). The mean number of hyperTDs was 4.3 ± 3.1 for SD-OCTA scans and 4.5 ± 3.3 for SS-OCTA scans (P = 0.06). The mean sqrt total area measurements were 1.16 ± 0.64 mm for the SD-OCTA scans and 1.17 ± 0.65 mm for the SS-OCTA scans (P < 0.001). Because of the small standard error of the differences, the mean difference between the scans was statistically significant but not clinically significant. Conclusions: Spectral-domain OCTA scans provide similar results to SS-OCTA scans when used to obtain the number and area measurements of persistent hyperTDs through a semiautomated algorithm previously developed for SS-OCTA. This facilitates the detection of atrophy with a more widely available scan pattern and the longitudinal study of early to late-stage AMD. PURPOSE: To describe the features of peripheral retinal degenerations using an Ultra-Widefield (UWF) Swept Source Optical Coherence Tomography (SS-OCT). METHOD: In this cross-sectional study done at a tertiary eye care centre in Northern India, peripheral retinal degenerations such as lattices, snail track lesion, paving stone, White With-Out Pressure(WWOP), micro-cystoid lesions, retinoschisis and other suspicious lesions were identified with clinical examination. Following clinical examination, these eyes with peripheral retinal degenerations underwent UWF OCT. RESULTS: 100 eyes with 14 peripheral lesions like lattices (31%), snail track lesions (10.4%), peripheral retinoschisis (7.5%), non-specific pigmented doubtful lesions (13.2%), WWOP (7.5%), paving stone (6.6%), peripheral retinal detachment (3.8%) along with CHRPE, micro-cystoid lesions and dark without pressure areas were identified. All the lesions could be imaged with the help of UWF-OCT. It significantly helped in improving diagnostic capability with early identification of specific structural features such as vitreoretinal attachment and traction, full-thickness hole or tear, and sub-retinal fluid which were not so evident on indirect ophthalmoscopy. CONCLUSION: UWF-OCT deepens our understanding of the structure of the retina and its associated peripheral pathologies, allowing early recognition of vision-threatening lesions that may influence clinical management.

While cryotherapy is one of the traditional ways to reduce postoperative complications in maxillofacial surgery, the cooling degree is not regulated in most cases and the achieved effect is not properly controlled. Therefore, to develop optimal cooling modes, we propose to study the buccal vascular response to cooling, which has not been previously shown. To evaluate the effect of cooling, we analyzed vessel networks using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A). The cheek vessels were OCT-A monitored using cooling by an ice bag/cooling mask. We found the advantages of using a cooling mask over an ice bag consist of a statistically significant decrease in the perfused vessel density (PVD) of the papillary layer at the oral mucosa. The absence of the reticular layer vessel reaction to any type of cooling was noted. We argue for the necessity to develop optimal modes of cryotherapy, which will contribute to blood perfusion reduction and reduction of PVD recovery.

To develop novel fungicides for controlling postharvest fungal diseases in citrus fruits, 12 essential oil (EO)-based thiosemicarbazones compounds, termed hydrazine-carbothioamide, were prepared according to the condensation method. In vitro assays showed that compound 13j exhibited the strongest antifungal activity (minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC] = minimum fungicidal concentration [MFC] = 0.0125 mg/mL) against Penicillium digitatum. An in vivo study revealed that 5 × MFC of compound 13j can effectively mitigate the green mold incidence of citrus fruit inoculated with P. digitatum, as well as fruit rot during natural storage, at a level comparable to that of the chemical fungicide prochloraz. Throughout this process, fruit quality was maintained. The hemolysis assay showed that these thiosemicarbazone compounds have good biocompatibility and that their safety is comparable to that of prochloraz. The antifungal activity of compound 13j was attributed to membrane damage, as confirmed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Calcofluor white (CFW) staining, propidium iodide (PI) staining, Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, optical density (OD)260, and relative conductivity assays. Collectively, our results indicate that compound 13j can be used as an antifungal agent to control the postharvest decay of citrus fruits.

A comparison of the accuracy of intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation formulae, including SRK/T, HofferQ, Holladay 1, Haigis, MM, Barrett Universal II (BUII), Emmetropia Verifying Optical (EVO), and AS-OCT ray tracing, was performed. One hundred eyes implanted with either the Rayone EMV RAO200E (Rayner Intraocular Lenses Limited, Worthing, UK) or the Artis Symbiose (Cristalens Industrie, Lannion, France) IOL were included. Biometry was obtained using IOLMaster 700 (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Jena, Germany) and MS-39 AS-OCT (CSO, Firenze, Italy). Mean (MAE) and median (MedAE) absolute errors and percentage of eyes within ±0.25D, ±0.50D, ±0.75D, and ±1.00D of the target were compared, with ±0.75D considered a key metric. The highest percentage within ±0.75D was found with MM (96%) followed by the Haigis (94%) for the enhanced monofocal IOL. SRK/T (94%) had the highest percentage within ±0.75D, followed by Holladay 1, MM, BUII, and ray tracing (all 90%) for the multifocal IOL. No statistically significant difference in MAE was found with both IOLs. EVO showed the lowest MAE for the enhanced monofocal and ray tracing for the multifocal IOL. EVO and ray tracing showed the lowest MedAE for the two respective IOLs. A similar performance with high accuracy across formulae was found. MM and ray tracing appear to have similar accuracy to the well-established formulae and displayed a high percentage of eyes within ±0.75D.

PURPOSE: To evaluate and compare the repeatability of corneal densitometry (CD) measurements obtained using both an anterior-segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) device and a Scheimpflug camera system, while also assessing the level of agreement. The study also sought to investigate the correlation of CD with age, gender, and central corneal thickness (CCT) in normal eyes. METHODS: CD measurements were obtained using the Casia 2 and the Pentacam AXL Wave. Data were collected on Total Corneal Densitometry and 4 concentric corneal annular areas, these are referred to as zone 1, denoting the central area, through to zone 4, designating the outermost peripheral region. Repeatability was assessed using intra-session test-retest variability, coefficient of variation (CoV), and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). The agreement was evaluated using Bland-Altman plots. Correlation analysis was performed between CD, age, gender, and CCT. RESULTS: The study included 96 healthy volunteers. The Casia 2 demonstrated high repeatability with ICC values exceeding 0.9 in all the corneal zones and lower CoV values compared to the Pentacam AXL Wave (ranging from 1.07% to 2.25% for Casia 2 and from 1.91% to 6.89% for Pentacam).95% LoA were within ± 2 standard deviation from the average mean except from zone 1 (± 2.42).However, the measurements showed a consistent bias among all the corneal zones. CD values were positively correlated with age, except for zone 1 with the Pentacam (p = 0.083). CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that the Casia 2 can be a reliable tool for assessing corneal transparency in healthy individuals, however its measurements are not interchangeable with those provided by the Pentacam. The AS-OCT device may be more sensitive in detecting subtle age-related changes in CD within the central zone.

OBJECTIVE: This study explores the application of Line-field Confocal Optical Coherence Tomography (LC-OCT) imaging coupled with artificial intelligence (AI)-based algorithms to investigate atopic dermatitis (AD), a common inflammatory dermatosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: AD acute and chronic lesions (ADL) were compared to clinically healthy-looking skin (ADNL). LC-OCT was used noninvasively and in real-time to image the skin of AD patients during flare-ups and monitor remissions under topical steroid treatment for 2 weeks. Quantitative parameters were extracted from the images, including morphological and cellular-level markers of epidermal architecture. A novel cellular-level parameter, nuclei "atypia," which quantifies the orderliness of epidermal renewal, was used to highlight abnormal maturation processes. RESULTS: Compared to healthy skin, AD lesions exhibited significant increases in both epidermal and stratum corneum (SC) thickness, along with a more undulated dermo-epidermal junction (DEJ). Additionally, keratinocyte nuclei (KN) were larger, less compact, and less organized in lesional areas, as indicated by the atypia parameter. A higher degree of atypia was observed in chronic lesions compared to acute ones. Following treatment, all the parameters normalized to levels observed in healthy skin within 2 weeks, mirroring clinical improvements. CONCLUSION: This study provides insights into the quantification of epidermal renewal using a noninvasive imaging technique, highlighting differences between ADL/ADNL and acute/chronic lesions. It also presents the AD treatment mechanism, paving the way for future investigations on AD and other skin barrier function-related conditions.

Proper fetal development requires tight regulation of serotonin concentrations within the fetoplacental unit. This homeostasis is partly maintained by the placental transporter OCT3/SLC22A3, which takes up serotonin from the fetal circulation. Metformin, an antidiabetic drug commonly used to treat gestational diabetes mellitus, was shown to inhibit OCT3. We, therefore, hypothesized that its use during pregnancy could disrupt placental serotonin homeostasis. This hypothesis was tested using three experimental model systems: primary trophoblast cells isolated from the human term placenta, fresh villous human term placenta fragments, and rat term placenta perfusions. Inhibition of serotonin transport by metformin at three concentrations (1 µM, 10 µM, and 100 µM) was assessed in all three models. The OCT3 inhibitor decynium-22 (100 µM) and paroxetine (100 µM), a dual inhibitor of SERT and OCT3, were used as controls. In primary trophoblasts, paroxetine exhibited the strongest inhibition of serotonin uptake, followed by decynium-22. Metformin showed a concentration-dependent effect, reducing serotonin uptake by up to 57 % at the highest concentration. Its inhibitory effect was less pronounced in fresh villous fragments but remained statistically significant at all concentrations. In the perfused rat placenta, metformin demonstrated a concentration-dependent effect, reducing placental serotonin uptake by 44 % at the highest concentration tested. Our findings across all experimental models show inhibition of placental OCT3 by metformin, resulting in reduced serotonin uptake by the trophoblast. This sheds light on mechanisms that may underpin metformin-mediated effects on fetal development.

Background: Hyperreflective foci (HRF) are biomarkers in detection of diabetic retinopathy (DR). Presence of HRF on spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) can give a correlation with visual acuity change and grades of DR. Purpose of this study is to determine the presence, location, and role of HRF in the retina of DM patients with and without retinopathy. Methods: A total of 192 eyes of patients suffering from type II DM were evaluated. Patients were divided into 2 groups, with Group A having diabetes without retinopathy (20 patients) and group B (76 patients) having diabetes and various grades of retinopathy. SD-OCT was performed in all patients, passing through the center of fovea. On OCT, presence and absence of HRF were noted. Characteristics of the hyper-reflective spots were evaluated: location, shape, size, back shadowing and association with central macular thickness (CMT), visual acuity, and grades of retinopathy. Results: HRF were present in 169 eyes (88%) out of 192 eyes. The shape and location of HRF tend to change with disease progression. HRF were significantly associated with increasing grades of retinopathy (χ2 = 57.586, p < 0.01) Association of macular edema was significant with both retinopathy (χ2 = 8.895, p < 0.05) and HRF (χ2 = 34.720, p < 0.01). Association of best-corrected visual acuity with HRF (χ2 = 21.232, p < 0.01), macular edema (χ2 = 86.960, p < 0.01), and CMT (χ2 = 47.959, p< 0 .01) was significant. Conclusion: HRF is a great indicator for early diagnosis of subclinical retinopathy and can be used to monitor the progression of disease and development of macular edema. Significant difference is present in HRF distribution and morphology.

AIMS: This preclinical study aimed to establish optical coherence tomography (OCT)-derived parameters that could be used in the clinical setting for assessing strut degradation in the third-generation drug-eluting resorbable magnesium scaffold (DREAMS-3G), and characterize the comparative degradation profile against its precursor device (MagmarisTM scaffold). METHODS AND RESULTS: Twelve DREAMS-3G and 10 MagmarisTM scaffolds were implanted in juvenile pigs, and OCT images obtained at baseline and follow-up (6 or 12 months). Strut degradation was assessed by planimetric analysis and compared with OCT-derived indices to validate their diagnostic accuracy. A total of 3327 struts of DREAMS-3G and 2995 struts of the MagmarisTM scaffold were delineated by OCT. DREAMS-3G exhibited a significantly higher number of visible struts per analyzed frame at 6 months than the MagmarisTM scaffold, in the absence of significant differences at 12 months. Attenuation index (AtI) analysis indicated DREAMS-3G degradation was less advanced at 6 months but more advanced at 12 months compared to the MagmarisTM scaffold. These OCT-derived indices significantly correlated with the results of the planimetric analysis. CONCLUSION: The current preclinical study validated OCT indices that may serve as clinical surrogate markers for scaffold degradation. AtI analysis indicated that DREAMS-3G showed less degradation at 6 months but more advanced degradation at 12 months compared to the MagmarisTM scaffold, which corroborates the findings from planimetric analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Recurrent events after myocardial infarction (MI) are common and often originate from native non-culprit (NC) lesions that are non-flow limiting. These lesions consequently pose as targets to improve long-term outcome. It is, however, largely unknown whether these lesions differ between sexes. The aim of this study was to assess such potential differences. METHODS: From the PECTUS-obs study, we assessed sex-related differences in plaque characteristics of fractional flow reserve (FFR)-negative intermediate NC lesions in 420 MI-patients. RESULTS: Among the included patients, 80 (19.1 %) were female and 340 (80.9 %) male. Women were older and more frequently had hypertension and diabetes. In total, 494 NC lesions were analyzed. After adjustment for clinical characteristics and accounting for within-patients clustering, lesion length was longer in female patients (20.8 ± 10.0 vs 18.3 ± 8.5 mm, p = 0.048) and minimum lumen area (2.30 ± 1.42 vs 2.78 ± 1.54 mm2, p < 0.001) and minimum lumen diameter (1.39 ± 0.45 vs 1.54 ± 0.44 mm, p < 0.001) were smaller. The minimum fibrous cap thickness was smaller among females (96 ± 53 vs 112 ± 72 µm, p = 0.025), with more lesions harboring a thin cap fibroatheroma (39.3 % vs 24.9 %, p < 0.001). Major adverse cardiovascular events at two years occurred in 6.3 % of female patients and 11.8 % of male patients (p = 0.15). CONCLUSIONS: FFR-negative NC lesions after MI harbored more high-risk plaque features in female patients. Although this did not translate into an excess of recurrent events in female patients in this modestly sized cohort, it remains to be investigated whether this difference affects clinical outcome.

PURPOSE: To assess the prevalence of fovea plana in patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and compare characteristics of the detachment between patients with and without fovea plana. METHODS: This retrospective, cross-sectional, case-control study included individuals with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. We collected demographics and data on the operated eye, spherical equivalent, best-corrected visual acuity, lens status, macula status, number of retinal holes or tears, and presence of intravitreal hemorrhage, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, posterior vitreous detachment and proliferative vitreoretinopathy. The type of surgery, the tamponade, and cataract surgery following retinal surgery were also recorded. Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography macular cubes were used to evaluate the fovea by using the Spectralis HRA-OCT device (Heidelberg Engineering, Germany). Images were graded by two different investigators and a third investigator in case of disagreement. RESULTS: We included 204 individuals; 35 (17.2%) had fovea plana, a proportion significantly higher than in the general population (p = 0.041). Individuals with and without fovea plana did not differ in any of the characteristics mentioned above apart from posterior vitreous detachment, which was more frequent in those with than without fovea plana (p = 0.038). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of fovea plana is higher in patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, which suggests an association between fovea plana and potential vitreoretinal interface changes.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer has the highest mortality rate among malignancies globally. In addition, due to the growing number of smokers there is considerable concern over its growth. Early detection is an essential step towards reducing complications in this regard and helps to ensure the most effective treatment, reduce health care costs, and increase survival rates. AIMS: To define the most efficient and cost-effective method of early detection in clinical practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We collected the Information used to write this review by searching papers through PUBMED that were published from 2021 to 2024, mainly systematic reviews, meta-analyses and clinical-trials. We also included other older but notable papers that we found essential and valuable for understanding. RESULTS: EB-OCT has a varied sensitivity and specificity-an average of 94.3% and 89.9 for each. On the other hand, detecting biomarkers via liquid biopsy carries an average sensitivity of 91.4% for RNA molecules detection, and 97% for combined methylated DNA panels. Moreover, CTCs detection did not prove to have a significant role as a screening method due to the rarity of CTCs in the bloodstream thus the need for more blood samples and for enrichment techniques. DISCUSSION: Although low-dose CT scan (LDCT) is the current golden standard screening procedure, it is accompanied by a highly false positive rate. In comparison to other radiological screening methods, Endobronchial optical coherence tomography (EB-OCT) has shown a noticeable advantage with a significant degree of accuracy in distinguishing between subtypes of non-small cell lung cancer. Moreover, numerous biomarkers, including RNA molecules, circulating tumor cells, CTCs, and methylated DNA, have been studied in the literature. Many of these biomarkers have a specific high sensitivity and specificity, making them potential candidates for future early detection approaches. CONCLUSION: LDCT is still the golden standard and the only recommended screening procedure for its high sensitivity and specificity and proven cost-effectiveness. Nevertheless, the notable false positive results acquired during the LDCT examination caused a presumed concern, which drives researchers to investigate better screening procedures and approaches, particularly with the rise of the AI era or by combining two methods in a well-studied screening program like LDCT and liquid biopsy. we suggest conducting more clinical studies on larger populations with a clear demographical target and adopting approaches for combining one of these new methods with LDCT to decrease false-positive cases in early detection.

Purpose: To investigate the change in the vault of the implantable collamer lens (ICL) under dark-to-light conditions and its association with anterior chamber and lens parameters in patients undergoing ICL surgery. Methods: In 76 eyes from 40 patients, preoperative anterior chamber volume (ACV), pupil diameter (PD), anterior chamber angle, central corneal thickness (CCT), white-to-white (WTW), lens thickness (LT), axial length (AL), spherical equivalent (SE) and patient's age were collected. Postoperative vault, PD and LT were measured under dark and light conditions using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (CASIA2; TOMEY, Japan), and changes and lens displacement under dark-to-light conditions were calculated. Mixed-effects models were used to analyze the correlation between the vault change and the anterior chamber and lens parameters of all subjects and the high-vault subgroup. Results: The vault under light condition (648.36 ± 304.47 µm) was significantly smaller compared to the vault under dark condition (708.89 ± 316.15 µm). In all patients, vault change increased with the increase of age, lens displacement and PD change; and increased with the decrease of ACV, LT change and baseline vault (under dark condition). In the high-vault subgroup, vault change increased with the increase of CCT, lens displacement and PD change; and increased with the decrease of ACV. Conclusions: ICL vault changes significantly from dark to light, influenced by age, ACV, PD change, LT change, lens displacement, and baseline vault. A higher baseline vault is correlated with a larger LT change, affecting the levels of accommodation under dark-to-light transition.

Background This study aimed to analyze the visual field changes and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness during the headache phase of migraine attacks among migraine patients compared with controls. Methodology A prospective, case-control study was conducted at a tertiary care center in Palakkad, Kerala from January 2022 to August 2023. This study included 50 migraine patients and 50 age/gender-matched controls. Adults aged 20-40 years with a more than three-year history of migraine were included in this study and those who had systemic or ocular pathologies were excluded. All 100 subjects underwent complete ocular examination, including full threshold 24-2 automated perimetry for visual field analysis and optical coherence tomography for analyzing RNFL thickness. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS Statistics Version 25 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). Results In this study, the average age for cases was 29.24 ± 5.10 years, and for controls was 30.12 ± 6.20 years. Gender distribution was identical between cases and controls with 29 (58%) females and 21 (42%) males. Among the 50 migraine patients, 22 (44%) had generalized, while 28 (56%) had localized field defects during the headache phase of migraine attacks. There was a statistically significant (p < 0.001) difference in superior quadrant RNFL thickness between cases (114.08 ± 12.25) and controls. Conclusions We found that RNFL thinning in the superior quadrant and non-specific localized visual field changes occur during migraine attacks. We conducted this study in a tertiary care center as very few studies in our country have revealed visual field changes during migraine headache attacks.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the lamina cribrosa, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), and macula in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PEXG) and healthy individuals using enhanced depth imaging (EDI) of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). METHODS: A total of 158 eyes were included in the study, comprising 58 eyes of 29 patients with POAG, 50 eyes of 25 patients with PEXG, and 50 eyes of 25 healthy individuals. The lamina cribrosa thickness (LCT) (at three locations), lamina cribrosa depth (LCD), RNFL thickness, and the macular thickness were measured using the EDI mode of the SD-OCT. The results were compared among the three groups. RESULTS: In both POAG and PEXG groups, the LCT was significantly thinner in the center, mid-superior, and mid-inferior areas in both eyes than in the control group (p < 0.001). However, no statistically significant difference was observed between the POAG and PEXG groups in terms of LCT at all three measurement locations in both eyes (p > 0.05). The LCD was significantly lower in the control group compared to the POAG and PEXG groups (p < 0.05), but there was no significant difference between the POAG and PEXG groups (p > 0.05). The RNFL thickness was significantly lower in both the POAG and PEXG groups compared to the control group in both eyes (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The LCT and LCD of patients with POAG and PEXG were thinner than those of healthy individuals, but there was no significant difference between the patients with POAG and PEXG.

Organic cation transporter 2 (OCT2/SLC22A2) is predominantly localized on the basolateral membranes of renal tubular epithelial cells and plays a crucial role in the renal secretion of various cationic drugs. Although variations in substrate selectivity among renal organic cation transport systems across species have been reported, the characteristics of OCT2 remain unclear. In this study, we demonstrated that atenolol, a ß1-selective adrenergic antagonist, is transported almost exclusively by human OCT2, contrasting with OCT2s from other selected species. Using chimeric constructs between human OCT2 (hOCT2) and the highly homologous monkey OCT2 (monOCT2), along with site-directed mutagenesis, we identified non-conserved amino acids Val8, Ala31, Ala34, Tyr222, Tyr245, Ala270, Ile394, and Leu503 as pivotal for hOCT2-mediated atenolol transport. Kinetic analysis revealed that atenolol was transported by hOCT2 with a 12-fold lower affinity than MPP+, a typical OCT2 substrate. The inhibitory effect of atenolol on MPP+ transport was 6200-fold lower than that observed for MPP+ on atenolol transport. Additionally, we observed weaker inhibitory effects on MPP+ transport compared to atenolol transport with ten different OCT2 substrates. Altogether, this study suggests that eight hOCT2-specific amino acids constitute the low-affinity recognition site for atenolol transport, indicating differences in OCT2-mediated drug elimination between humans and highly homologous monkeys. Our findings underscore the importance of understanding species-specific differences in drug transport mechanisms, shedding light on potential variations in drug disposition and aiding in drug development.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to evaluate microaneurysms (MAs) after treatment with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapy to understand causes of chronic edema and anti-VEGF resistance. METHODS: Patients with non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy, with or without macular edema were recruited. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) MAs-related parameters were observed, including the maximum diameter of overall dimensions, material presence, and flow signal within the lumen. OCTA parameters also included central macular thickness (CMT), foveal avascular zone, superficial and deep capillary plexuses, and non-flow area measurements on the superficial retinal slab. RESULTS: Overall, 48 eyes from 43 patients were evaluated. CMT differed significantly between the diabetic macular edema (DME ) and non-DME (NDME) groups at 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 6th months of follow-up (P < 0.001; <0.001; 0.003; <0.001, respectively). A total of 55 and 59 MAs were observed in the DME (mean = 99.40 ± 3.18 µm) and NDME (mean maximum diameter = 74.70 ± 2.86 µm) groups at baseline, respectively (significant between-group difference: P < 0.001). Blood flow signal was measurable for 46 (83.6%) and 34 (59.3%) eyes in the DME and NDME groups, respectively (significant between-group difference: P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Compared to the NDME group, the DME group had larger MAs and a higher blood-flow signal ratio. Following anti-VEGF therapy, changes in the diameter of MAs were observed before changes in CMT thickness.

Purpose: To compare the refractive predictability of Argos measurements with Barrett Universal II (BUII) and Barrett True Axial Length (BTAL) formulas in a large sample of long, medium, and short axial length (AL) eyes. Methods: A retrospective chart review identified 445 eyes of 247 patients for inclusion. The Argos was used for preoperative biometry, and BUII formula for intraocular lens (IOL) power calculations. Back calculations were performed using data from the Argos for the BTAL formula. Data were collected for postoperative absolute prediction error (APE), refractive outcomes, and monocular uncorrected and distance corrected visual acuities at distance (UDVA, CDVA). Results: Overall, mean APE was 0.36 ± 0.33 D for BUII and for 0.34 ± 0.32 D BTAL (p = 0.04). In short AL eyes, mean APE was 0.45 ± 0.37 D for BUII and for 0.37 ± 0.31 D BTAL (p < 0.001). No significant differences between BUII and BTAL were identified for long AL or medium AL eyes. The percentages of eyes with APE of 0.5 D or less in long, medium, and short eyes were 79%, 79% and 51%, respectively, for BUII and 82%, 78% and 69%, respectively, for BTAL. Conclusion: The prediction accuracies were high with both the BUII and BTAL formulas in long, medium, and short eyes, leading to excellent refractive outcomes. The BTAL formula may have lower absolute prediction error in short eyes compared to BUII.


When the natural lens inside the eye becomes opaque, it can be replaced during cataract surgery with a clear artificial intraocular lens (IOL). It is critical for good postoperative outcomes that the optimal power for the IOL is implanted. Biometers are devices used to measure the eye and typically have built-in formulas to calculate the most appropriate IOL power for implantation. However, it is challenging to select the optimal power in eyes that are longer or shorter than average. The purpose of this study was to compare the refractive predictability of a novel biometer using two IOL power calculation formulas in a large sample of long, medium, and short eyes. The results of this study suggest that predictability was high with both formulas in long, medium, and short eyes, leading to excellent refractive outcomes.

Purpose: To investigate sex-based differences in inflammation-related biomarkers on spectral-domain OCT. Design: Cross-sectional study. Participants: Patients with diabetic macular edema (DME) between February 1, 2019, and March 31, 2023, without intravitreal anti-VEGF injection within the previous 6 months. Methods: We reviewed each patient's medical record for age, biological sex, race and ethnicity, most recent glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level, visual acuity (VA), and central macular thickness (CMT). OCT biomarkers that have been found in literature to be associated with inflammation, including disorganization of retinal inner layers (DRIL), retinal hyperreflective retinal foci (HRFs), hyperreflective choroidal foci (HCFs), subfoveal neuroretinal detachment (SND), and perturbation in retinal nerve fiber layer thickness, ganglion cell layer thickness, and inner nuclear layer (INL) thickness were evaluated by graders masked to the clinical characteristics of the patients. We performed multivariable regression analyses with the OCT biomarkers as the outcome variables and sex, age, HbA1c, and CMT as independent variables. Main Outcome Measures: OCT inflammation-related biomarkers, as listed above. Results: Female patients were, on average, 2 years older than male patients (P = 0.041). There were no significant differences in race and ethnicity, HbA1c, VA, or CMT between male and female patients. After controlling for age, HbA1c, and CMT, we found male sex to be associated with more HRF (incidence rate ratio [IRR] = 1.19; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.10-1.29), more HCF (odds ratio = 2.01; 95% CI = 1.12-3.64), and thicker INL (7 µm thicker in males; 95% CI = 2-12). Sex was not a significant predictor for either DRIL or SND in the multivariable regression models. Patients with higher HbA1c were more likely to have more HRF (IRR = 1.02 per 1 point increase; 95% CI = 1.00-1.04) after controlling for other factors. Conclusions: Male sex was correlated with more inflammation-related biomarkers on OCT including more HRF, more HCF, and thicker INL, after accounting for age, glycemic control, and amount of DME. Further studies are needed to evaluate the potential implications of these sex-based differences for individualized treatment.
