BACKGROUND: Silent myocardial infarction (SMI) frequently goes undetected, yet it is associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The impact of intensive systolic blood pressure (SBP) lowering on the risk of SMI in those with hypertension remains uncertain. METHODS: In this post hoc analysis of the Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial (SPRINT), participants with serial electrocardiograms (ECGs) during the trial were included. SPRINT investigated the benefit of intensive SBP lowering, aiming for < 120 mmHg compared to the standard SBP goal of < 140 mmHg. Incident SMI was defined as evidence of new MI on an ECG without adjudicated recognized myocardial infarction (RMI). RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 3.9 years, a total of 234 MI events (55 SMI and 179 RMI) occurred. Intensive, compared to standard, SBP lowering resulted in a lower rate of SMI (incidence rate 1.1 vs. 2.3 cases per 1000 person-years, respectively; HR [95% CI]: 0.48 [0.27-0.84]). Similarly, intensive, compared to standard, BP lowering reduced the risk of RMI (incidence rate 4.6 vs. 6.5 cases per 1000 person-years, respectively; HR [95% CI]: 0.71 [0.52-0.95]). No significant differences were noted between the strength of the association of intensive BP control on lowering the risk of SMI and RMI (p-value for HR differences = 0.23). CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that in adults with hypertension, the benefits of intensive SBP lowering, compared with standard BP lowering, go beyond the prevention of RMI to include the prevention of SMI. BACKGROUND: Maximal sprinting speed (MSS) overexposure is associated with increased risk of injury. This study aimed to describe changes in sprint performance-related factors and hamstring strain injury (HSI) risk factors after a high-volume sprinting session in soccer players. HYPOTHESIS: A high-volume sprinting session can induce acute changes in several sprint performance-related factors (sprint time and mechanical properties) and HSI risk factors (posterior chain muscle strength, hamstring range of motion, and dynamic lumbo-pelvic control [LPC], measured as changes in anterior pelvic tilt [APT] during maximal speed sprinting). STUDY DESIGN: Prospective observational case series. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 4. METHODS: Fifteen active male amateur soccer players participated. Changes in sprint performance-related factors and HSI risk factors were examined for 72 hours after high-volume MSS efforts (H-VMSSE) using a soccer-contextualized multifactorial approach. Muscle damage proxy markers (hamstring perceived soreness and creatine kinase) were also examined. RESULTS: H-VMSSE induced decrements in sprint performance-related factors. Significant reductions in theoretical maximal horizontal velocity (P < 0.01; effect size [ES], -0.71) and performance (P = 0.02; ES, -0.59) were observed for 48 and 72 hours after H-VMSSE. Small but significant reductions in posterior chain muscle force-generating capacity were detected for 48 and 72 hours after H-VMSSE for the nondominant (P < 0.03; ES, -0.60) and dominant (P < 0.04; ES, -0.40) leg. Finally, players exhibited persistent small, albeit nonsignificant (P = 0.06; ES, 0.53), decreases in dynamic LPC (APT increases) for 72 hours after H-VMSSE. CONCLUSION: H-VMSSE induced declines in both sprint performance-related factors and HSI risk factors. Sprinting can alter a player's anatomic structure by increasing APT during the maximum speed phase of the sprint. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: A soccer-contextualized multifactorial approach might allow for the regulation of MSS dosage depending on individual HSI risk factor status, thereby serving as a tailored "vaccine" for sprinting needs.

BACKGROUND: Sprinting is important for both individual and team sports, and enhancing performance is often done through resisted, assisted, or combined sprint training. However, the effectiveness of these methods compared to traditional sprint training remains inconclusive. The objective of this review with meta-analysis was to review the current literature on intervention studies analyzing the effects of resisted, assisted, and combined (resisted-assisted) training on sprint kinematics and performance in terms of acceleration and maximum velocity. METHODS: A literature search was conducted using SPORTDiscus up to and including April 19, 2023. The following eligibility criteria were applied: (1) a longitudinal study over a minimum of four weeks; (2) studies using resistance (sleds, parachutes, uphill slope, towing devices) or assistance (towing devices, downhill slope), or a combination of both; (3) a main intervention focused on resisted or assisted training, or a combination of both; (4) measurement of maximum velocity, acceleration measured in (s) with a minimum distance of 10-m, or kinematic changes such as step frequency, ground contact time, flight time, and step length; and (5) peer-reviewed studies. RESULTS: Twenty-one studies were included in this review with meta-analysis. Kinematic changes, changes in acceleration, and changes in maximum velocity were analyzed. Only resisted sprint training was associated with a significant improvement in 10-m acceleration compared to normal (i.e. without assistance or resistance) sprinting (Z = 2.01, P = 0.04). With resisted, assisted and combined sprint training no significant changes in kinematics, 20-m times or maximum velocity were found when compared to normal sprint training. However, in the within group, effect sizes resisted sprint training had a moderate effect on 10-m times. A moderate effect on ground contact time, step frequency, 10-and 20-meter time after assisted sprint training was found, while combined sprint training had a moderate effect on maximum velocity. CONCLUSION: Resisted sprint training seems to be effective for improving acceleration ability, with significant decreases in the 10-m times. There were no other significant findings, suggesting that normal sprinting yields the same change in 20-m times, kinematics and maximum velocity as resisted, assisted and combined sprint training. However, moderate effect sizes using these different training methods were found, which may suggest that the different training forms could be useful for improving different parts of the sprint and changing the kinematics. Combination (uphill-downhill) sprint training seems to be effective at improving maximum velocity, while assisted sprint training was the most effective training to increase step frequency, which can affect sprint performance positively. However, more studies, especially in assisted sprints, need to be conducted to determine the full effect of these training forms.

Modern agriculture relies heavily on pesticide use to meet the demands of food quality and quantity. Therefore, pesticides are often applied in mixtures, leading to a diverse cocktail of chemicals and their metabolites in soils, which can affect non-target organisms such as soil microorganisms. Pesticides are tested for their single effects, but studies on their interactive effects are scarce. This study aimed to determine the effects of up to three simultaneously applied pesticides on the soil microbial community and on their special function in pesticide degradation. Agricultural soil without previous pesticide application was exposed to different mixtures of the herbicide glyphosate (GLP), the phenoxy herbicide MCPA (2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid) and the fungicide difenoconazole (DFC) for up to 56 days. Isotopic and molecular methods were used to investigate effects of the mixtures on the microbial community and to follow the mineralization and utilization of GLP. An initial increase in the metabolic quotient by up to 35 % in the presence of MCPA indicated a stress reaction of the microbial community. The presence of multiple pesticides reduced both gram positive bacterial fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) by 13 % and the abundance of microorganisms with the genetic potential for GLP degradation via the AMPA (aminomethylphosphonic acid) pathway. Both the number of pesticides and the identities of individual pesticides played major roles. Surprisingly, an increase in 13C-labelled GLP mineralization of up to 40 % was observed while carbon use efficiency (CUE) decreased. Interactions between multiple pesticides might alter the behavior of individual pesticides and be reflected in the microbial community. Our results highlight the importance of investigating not only single pesticides, but also pesticide mixtures and their interactions.

The study aimed to investigate the effects of acute ingestion of saffron (SAF) on physiological (i.e., heart rate and blood lactate) and perceptual (i.e., ratings of perceived exertion [RPE] and feeling scale) measures in response to a repeated-sprint ability test (RSS) in healthy young males (N = 22; mean ± SD: age, 21.7 ± 1.24 yrs.). All participants completed two experimental trials with a one-week washout period using a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover design. In each session, the participants were randomly chosen to receive either a capsule of saffron (300 mg) (SAF session) or a capsule of lactose (PLB session) two hours before performing the RSS.No significant differences (p > 0.05) were found for heart rate, RPE, and feeling scale between the SAF or PLB sessions at pre- and post-RSS. There were no significant changes (p > 0.05) in peak time, total time, fatigue index, and blood lactate in either the SAF or PLB sessions. Acute SAF ingestion did not significantly improve RSS performance nor physiological and perceptual measures in active young males. Future trials should address the topic by using shortened/prolonged higher doses of SAF on biological, physical, physiological, and perceptual responses to acute and chronic exercise.

BACKGROUND: Sprinting is a type of running that consists of producing a short and intense effort in order to perform maximal speed in a short period of time. Sprinting is widely investigated because of the multiple and complex mechanisms involved. Sprint studies are now focusing on how to improve performance by focusing their analyses on the mechanic variables. The hamstrings are part of the most important muscle groups during sprinting because of their role of stabilization and propulsion, but they must be able to produce the maximum strength during a short moment, this ability is characterized by rate of torque development (RTD). The main of this study was to investigate the association between hamstring RTD (Nm.s-1.kg-1) and mechanical variables composed of maximal power output (Pmax) (W.kg-1), maximal theoretical velocity (V0) (m.s-1), and maximal horizontal force production (F0) (N.kg-1) on short sprints in elite sprinters. METHODS: For this clinical trial, we used a research method based on data collection. A single group composed of four male and one female elite sprinters (age: 17.2 ± 1.79 years) has been included in this study. The sprinters performed a hamstring strength test, which included five trials of four seconds for each leg. This test required a portable dynamometer, the Kforce®, to collect 100 and 200 milliseconds RTD. Then the subjects were submitted to a sprint test. My Sprint® application has been used to collect the sprint mechanical variables. The sprint test included two trials; a starting block has been used for this test. A linear regression analysis was used between the rates of torque development and mechanical variables composed of maximal power output (Pmax) (W.kg-1), maximal theoretical velocity (V0) (m. s-1), and maximal horizontal force production (F0) (N.kg-1). RESULTS: No significant correlation was observed between 100 and 200 ms hamstring RTD and sprint biomechanical variables: maximal power output (Pmax) (W.kg-1), maximal theoretical velocity (V0) (m. s-1), and horizontal force production (F0) (N.kg-1). However, 100 and 200 ms RTD collected on the dominant leg tends to be more correlated with maximal theoretical velocity (spearman's rho = 0.80; p-value = 0.13) and Pmax output (spearman's rho = 0.70; p-value = 0.23) while for non-dominant leg, RTD tends to be more correlated with maximal power output (spearman's rho = 0.60; p-value = 0.35) and horizontal force production (spearman's rho = 0.70; p-value = 0.23). CONCLUSIONS: Hamstring RTD is not correlated with sprint biomechanical variables in elite sprinters. Further investigations must be made to study the observed trends in this study.

BACKGROUND: Hamstring injuries are a major problem in sports involving sprinting, such as soccer, rugby, and track and field, and lead to sports stoppages and psychological, social, and financial repercussions. For several years now, these injuries have been stagnating or even increasing. Preventing these injuries is therefore a fundamental issue for at-risk athletes. The aim of this study was to compare the electromyographic (EMG) activity of the hamstrings in athletes during sprinting, Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE), and high-speed concentric exercise on an isokinetic dynamometer. METHODS: A pilot study was conducted on a population of 15 sprint-exposed field athletes (22.54 ± 3.71 years, Tegner score ≥ 6) with no history of hamstring injury in the last six months. The protocol included a warm-up, followed by three repetitions of the NHE, two sets of 10 repetitions on the isokinetic dynamometer at 300°/sec, and a maximal sprint. Exercises were randomized for each subject, and muscle activity was assessed using wireless EMG sensors during each test. EMG data were normalized to the measured maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC), and test results were statistically analyzed to determine which exercise resulted in maximal hamstring activation. RESULTS: Comparison of hamstring muscle activity between exercises showed a significant difference for most of our results (p-value < 0.05). The results show significantly higher mean hamstring activity during sprinting (0.4800 ± 0.19 µV) compared with strengthening exercises. The NHE (0.3201 ± 0.09 µV) was the second most active exercise. In the last place was the high-speed concentric exercise on the isokinetic machine, which produced less activation than the other exercises (0.2487 ± 0.07 µV). CONCLUSIONS:  Sports involving sprinting are at risk of a hamstring injury but it appears that its use in rehabilitation and prevention of hamstring injury is relevant, as it would allow high-intensity muscle activation to prepare the hamstring for this type of loading. However, it is also fundamental to integrate strengthening exercises such as NHE in combination with sprinting in our rehabilitation. Finally, the use of the isokinetic dynamometer does not constitute a first-line choice for hamstring injury management.

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of differences in the level of change in linear speed and velocity in the modified change of direction test (COD) and to determine the relationship between speed deficits resulting from changes of direction and functional performance between groups of Polish U19 Volleyball National Team and Polish Women's Basketball 3 × 3 National Team. A total of 23 athletes: 12 volleyball players (age: 18 ± 0 years; body height: 183 ± 7 cm; body weight: 70 ± 8 kg) and 11 basketball players (age: 26 ± 4 years; body height: 180 ± 6 cm; body weight: 73 ± 10 kg) participated in the study. Athletes were tested for the following measures: Functional Movement Screen test (FMS), dynamic balance test Y-Balance, joints range of motion measurements, maximal sprint test (14 m), modified COD test (14 m) and change of direction deficit (CODD). A value of p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. There was no significant correlation between sprint and CODD results in basketball team. In volleyball team there was a positive and significant correlation between COD, sprint and CODD. There was a negative and significant correlation between Y-Balance scores and sprint test results in the basketball team. Basketball team had a positive significant correlation between hip rotations and COD results. There was a negative significant correlation between shoulder movements and COD and CODD results in volleyball team.

BACKGROUND: Diverticular disease is a common gastrointestinal diagnosis with over 2.7 million clinic visits yearly. National guidelines from the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons state that "the decision to recommend elective sigmoid colectomy after recovery from uncomplicated acute diverticulitis should be individualized." However, tools to individualize this decision are lacking. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop an online educational decision aid (DA) to facilitate effective surgeon and patient communication about treatment options for recurrent left-sided diverticulitis. METHODS: We used a modified design sprint methodology to create a prototype DA. We engaged a multidisciplinary team and adapted elements from the Ottawa Personal Decision Guide. We then iteratively refined the prototype by conducting a mixed methods assessment of content and usability testing, involving cognitive interviews with patients and surgeons. The findings informed the refinement of the DA. Further testing included an in-clinic feasibility review. RESULTS: Over a 4-day in-person rapid design sprint, including patients, surgeons, and health communication experts, we developed a prototype of a diverticulitis DA, comprising an interactive website and handout with 3 discrete sections. The first section contains education about diverticulitis and treatment options. The second section clarifies the potential risks and benefits of both clinical treatment options (medical management vs colectomy). The third section invites patients to participate in a value clarification exercise. After navigating the DA, the patient prints a synopsis that they bring to their clinic appointment, which serves as a guide for shared decision-making. CONCLUSIONS: Design sprint methodology, emphasizing stakeholder co-design and complemented by extensive user testing, is an effective and efficient strategy to create a DA for patients living with recurrent diverticulitis facing critical treatment decisions.

Objective: This meta-analysis examines the impact of different combinations of plyometric training (complexity, training volume, and rest intervals) on immediate vertical jump and sprint performance in athletes. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in four databases, and Cochrane guidelines were used to evaluate the quality of included studies. Review Manager 5.4 software was employed to analyze outcome measures. Nineteen randomized controlled trials involving 293 participants were included. Results: Single plyometric training-induced post-activation potentiation (PAP) had a slight positive effect on vertical jump performance [SMD = -0.24, 95% CI (-0.38, -0.1), P = 0.0009]. Optimal results were observed with rest intervals of 0.3-4 min (SMD = 0.30, P = 0.0008). Sprint performance showed slight improvement [SMD = 0.27, 95% CI (0.03, 0.52), P = 0.03]. Complex plyometric training had a moderate effect on vertical jump performance [SMD = 0.58, 95% CI (-0.86, -0.23), P = 0.002], with the best outcomes seen with rest intervals exceeding 8 min (SMD = 0.77). Sprint performance also improved significantly [SMD = 0.8, 95% CI (0.01, 1.59), P = 0.05]. Single-session plyometric training did not significantly enhance vertical jump performance [SMD = -0.19, 95% CI (-0.41, -0.02), P = 0.07], but had a notable effect on sprint performance [SMD = 0.8, 95% CI (0.01, 1.59), P = 0.05], particularly with rest intervals exceeding 8 min (SMD = 0.77). Multiple-session plyometric training improved vertical jump (SMD = 0.43, 95% CI [0.01, 1.59), P = 0.00001 < 0.05], with optimal effects observed at rest intervals of 5-7 min (SMD = 0.64). Sprint performance also improved [SMD = 0.46, 95% CI (0.01, 0.81), P = 0.01 < 0.05]. Conclusion: Plyometric training as an activation method has significant enhancing effects, depending on training complexity, volume, and rest intervals.

Carbohydrates are critical for high-intensity exercise performance. However, the effects of carbohydrate supplementation on muscle metabolism and performance during short-duration high-intensity intermittent exercise remain inadequately explored. Our aim was to address this aspect in a randomized, counterbalanced, double-blinded crossover design. Eleven moderately-to-well-trained males performed high-intensity intermittent cycling receiving carbohydrate (CHO, ~55 g/h) or placebo (PLA) fluid supplementation. Three exercise periods (EX1-EX3) were completed comprising 10 × 45 s at ~105% Wmax interspersed with 135 s rest between bouts and ~20 min between periods. Repeated sprint ability (5 × 6 s sprints with 24 s recovery) was assessed at baseline and after each period. Thigh muscle biopsies were obtained at baseline and before and after EX3 to determine whole-muscle and fiber-type-specific glycogen depletion. No differences were found in muscle glycogen degradation at the whole-muscle (p = 0.683) or fiber-type-specific level (p = 0.763-0.854) with similar post-exercise whole-muscle glycogen concentrations (146 ± 20 and 122 ± 15 mmol·kg-1 dw in CHO and PLA, respectively). Repeated sprint ability declined by ~9% after EX3 with no between-condition differences (p = 0.971) and no overall differences in ratings of perceived exertion (p = 0.550). This was despite distinctions in blood glucose concentrations throughout exercise, reaching post-exercise levels of 5.3 ± 0.2 and 4.1 ± 0.2 mmol·L-1 (p < 0.001) in CHO and PLA, respectively, accompanied by fivefold higher plasma insulin levels in CHO (p < 0.001). In conclusion, we observed no effects of carbohydrate ingestion on net muscle glycogen breakdown or sprint performance during short-duration high-intensity intermittent exercise despite elevated blood glucose and insulin levels. These results therefore question the efficacy of carbohydrate supplementation strategies in high-intensity intermittent sports.

The purpose of this study was to investigate: a) the differences in external load (EL) during microcycles with four (MIC4) and five training (MIC5) sessions, b) to explore the ratio of weekly training load to the load of the subsequent match, and c) to explore possible correlations between the EL of the MIC4 or MIC5 with the running performance of football players in the following match. The study involved 20 elite youth football players from a team that won the championship in their category that year (age, 16.4 ± 0.3 years). The EL was tracked via GPS in 8 MIC4 and 10 MIC5. Running performance in subsequent matches was also recorded. Two by two ANOVA was employed to compare parameters between MIC5 and MIC4 and Pearson correlation test was applied to examine potential correlations between the training load parameters. The results showed that MIC5 had significantly greater external load in distance parameters in zones 4 & 5, total distance, and decelerations. Differences in running performance in matches were observed only for accelerations (p = .028) and decelerations (p = .02). The ratio of training/match load was lower in all parameters in MIC4 compared to MIC5 but exceeded the match load. Large negative correlations were observed for accelerations and decelerations. In conclusion, additional training in MIC5 increases the load without affecting running performance in the match. Attention should be given to accelerations and decelerations, as their volume can easily increase with the use of small-sided games in training.

Background: The similarity between movement patterns and force-vector specificity of training exercises and the target movement will likely result in the greatest transfer of the practiced skills and physical abilities to the intended sports skill performance. Therefore, this review aimed to investigate whether specific adaptations in athletic performance would be observed following direction specific exercise training. Methodology: The literature search was performed in PubMed, Web of Science, and MEDLINE. Studies comparing acute (post-activation potentiation enhancement) and short-term (>2 weeks) effects of horizontally vs. vertically oriented resistance and plyometric training on athletic performance of recreationally active participants of either sex were included. The effect sizes were determined using a robust variance estimation random-effects model and were reported as Hedge's g. Results: Twenty-two studies were included. For acute studies (n = 4), a small non-significant effect favoring horizontal training (HT) for sprint performance improvements (g = -0.19, p = 0.17) was evident. For short-term studies (n = 18), the results showed non-significant, small to large differences between HT and vertical training (VT) in pooled vertical and horizontal jump improvements (g = 0.06, p = 0.67), vertical (g = 0.21, p = 0.17) and horizontal jump (g = -0.15, p = 0.40), pooled vertical and horizontal maximal strength (g = 0.27, p = 0.42), horizontal (g = -0.83, p = 0.16) and vertical maximal strength (g = 0.78, p = 0.28), pooled short and medium distance sprint (g = -0.23, p = 0.16), short (g = -0.33 [-0.85, 0.19], p = 0.19) and medium (g = -0.12 [-0.37, 0.13], p = 0.28) distance sprint, and COD speed and maneuverability (g = -0.45, p = 0.26). Conclusions: HT and VT were both equally effective in improving vertically and horizontally athletic performance, potentially refuting the theory of directional specificity of training on athletic performance outcomes.

BACKGROUND: In contrast with Advanced Footwear Technology-AFT running shoes for long-distance, little is known about AFT sprint spikes on performance and acceleration parameters. However, their use has become widespread since the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and knowledge of their effects would seem to be an essential starting point before any clinical or socio-economic considerations. OBJECTIVES: Our objectives were to determine intra- and inter-subject sprinting performance modifications with Nike® AFT spikes (NAS) compared to standard spiked-shoes (SS). METHODS: Healthy regional to national sprint athletes (n = 21, ≥ 750 pts World Athletics) performed 16 repetitions of 30-m sprints with either the NAS or SS condition during a single session, based on the multiple N-of-1 method, with pairwise randomisation and double-blind procedure. Time on 30-m sprints (Stalker radar), force-velocity profile (F0, V0, Vmax, Pmax, RF, DRF and FVP slope), and confounding factors (wind and shoe mass) were measured. Statistical analyses included a mixed linear regression model for group analyses, and randomisation test inversion and non-overlap-of-all-pair (NAP) methods for intra-individual analysis. RESULTS: NAS improved 30-m time by a mean of - 0.02 s (SMD = 0.4, p = 0.014), with no interaction with any confounding factors. Significant changes were seen in velocity (Vmax : SMD = 0.9, p < 0.001; V0: SMD = 0.7, p < 0.001) and the horizontal ratio of force (RFmax: SMD = 0.5, p = 0.043), with no changes observed in force production. Whatever the footwear, one unit of positive wind (+ 1 m.s- 1 ) improved performance by - 0.03 s (p < 0.001). At an individual level, four athletes improved (NAP ≥ 0.69), and one had a statistical decrease in performance. Changes in F-V profiles were largely individual. CONCLUSIONS: A positive effect on sprint acceleration characteristics was observed when using Nike® AFT spikes, due to an increase in velocity and the horizontal ratio of force. A major variability in inter-individual response justifies single-case experimental designs for research on the topic. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT05881148.

Background/Objectives: A high level of specific metabolic capacity is essential for maximal sprinting in both male and female athletes. Various factors dictate sex differences in maximal power production and energy utilization. This study aims to compare the contribution of energy systems between male and female athletes with similar sport-specific physiological adaptations during a 15-s sprint exercise. Methods: The endurance group consisted of 17 males (23 ± 7 y) and 17 females (20 ± 2 y). The speed-power group included 14 males (21.1 ± 2.6 y) and 14 females (20 ± 3 y). The contribution of phosphagen, glycolytic, and aerobic systems was determined using the three-component PCr-LA-O2 method. Results: Significant differences were observed in the energy expenditure for all systems and total energy expenditure between males and females in both groups (p = 0.001-0.013). The energy expenditure in kJ for individual systems (phosphagen-glycolytic-aerobic) was 35:25:7 vs. 20:16:5 in endurance males vs. female athletes, respectively. In the speed-power group, male athletes expended 33:37:6 kJ and female athletes expended 21:25:4 kJ, respectively. The percentage proportions did not differ between males and females in any system. The contribution of the phosphagen-glycolytic-aerobic systems was 52:37:11 vs. 48:39:13 in endurance male and female athletes, respectively. For speed-power males vs. female athletes, the proportions were 42:50:8 vs. 41:50:9, respectively. Conclusions: Despite the differences in body composition, mechanical output, and absolute energy expenditure, the energy system contribution appears to have a similar metabolic effect between male and female athletes engaged in sprint exercises with similar sport-related adaptations. The magnitude and profile of sex differences are related to sports discipline.

PURPOSE: With limited studies exploring the dose-response of caffeine consumption on repeated sprint ability in hypoxia, this study aimed to determine the optimal caffeine dose (low, moderate or high) during repeated sprints in hypoxia to exhaustion. METHODS: On separate visits, twelve active males randomly performed four experimental trials in normobaric hypoxia (inspired oxygen fraction: 16.5 ± 0.2%). Participants ingested placebo (PLA) or caffeine capsules (3, 6 or 9 mg/kg or LOW, MOD and HIGH, respectively) 1 h before exercise and then underwent a repeated cycling sprint test (10 s sprint/20 s active recovery) to exhaustion. Total sprint number and work done, peak and mean power output, blood lactate concentration, cardiorespiratory and perceptual responses were recorded. RESULTS: Total sprint number was greater in MOD and HIGH compared to PLA (20 ± 7 and 18 ± 8 vs. 13 ± 4; all P < 0.05), with MOD also higher than LOW (15 ± 6; P = 0.02). Total work done was greater in MOD (111 ± 40 kJ) and HIGH (100 ± 35 kJ) compared to LOW (83 ± 29 kJ) and PLA (76 ± 25 kJ) (all P < 0.05). However, there were no significant differences in total sprint number or total work done between MOD and HIGH (all P > 0.05). Blood lactate concentration was higher in both MOD and HIGH compared to PLA (all P < 0.05). However, peak and mean power outputs, fatigue index, and ratings of perceived exertion did not differ across different caffeine dosages (all P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: A moderate dose of caffeine (6 mg/kg) is the optimal amount for enhancing repeated cycling sprint ability when compared to low and high doses in moderate normobaric hypoxia.

Physical exercise can significantly impact our bodies, affecting our functional capacity, structure establishment, and molecular makeup. The magnitude of these changes depends on the specific exercise protocols used. For instance, low-to-moderate-intensity exercise can activate important molecular targets in the short term, such as BDNF-mediated signaling, while high-intensity exercise can maintain these signaling molecules in the active state for a longer term. This makes it challenging to recommend specific exercises for obtaining BDNF-induced benefits. Additionally, exercise-induced molecular signaling targets can have positive and negative effects, with some exercises blunting these targets and others activating them. For example, increasing BDNF concentration through exercise can be beneficial for brain health, but it may also have a negative impact on conditions such as bipolar disorder. Therefore, a deeper understanding of a specific exercise-mediated mechanistic approach is required. This review will delve into how the sprint exercise-mediated activation of BDNF could help maintain brain health and explore potential molecular interventions.

Most studies on sprint performance have focused on kinematics and kinetics of the musculoskeletal system for adults, with little research on the central sensorimotor transmission and processes, especially for adolescent sprinters. This study aimed to determine whether differences in the integrity of the central auditory system and audiomotor transmissions between the elite and sub-elite adolescent sprinters may affect their performance in the 100 m time. Twenty-nine adolescent junior high school students, including elite national-class and sub-elite regional-class athletes, were assessed. Visual and auditory evoked potentials (VEP and AEP) as well as electroencephalography (EEG) and electromyography (EMG) were recorded and analyzed during a sprint start. The electrophysiological results clearly reveal differences in central auditory transmission between elite and sub-elite groups, and between sexes. There were significant differences between elite and sub-elite groups, and during a sprint start, the EEG activities for elite female and male athletes showed significant time-dependent differences in peak amplitudes following the three auditory cues (ready, set, and gunshot). These findings can provide coaches with a more comprehensive consideration for sports-specific selection based on the athletes' individual conditions, e.g., sensorimotor neuroplastic training for providing precise and efficient training methods to improve young sprinters' performance.

A recently referenced method known as ultra short race pace training (USRPT), designed to familiarize swimmers with the pace of a swimming event by using high volumes and submaximal intensities, has emerged as an efficient approach, enhancing performance and predicting swimming outcomes. Despite its recognized benefits, particularly its lower physiological burden compared to other training methods, research on USRPT is still in its early stages. There are misunderstandings related to its intensity and the pace of calculation. This systematic review aims to provide valid statements identifying the pros and cons of USRPT as a training stimulus and providing swimming coaches with key messages and advice about this training method. For the analysis, 90,612 studies from PubMed, EBSCO, Science Direct, and Google Scholar databases were screened to research the background, intensity, and pace calculation of the USRPT method, although only four met the inclusion criteria. The final screening of the selected studies was conducted using a PRISMA-P document. USRPT has the potential to become a dominant training stimulus, offering a precise alternative to the often vague training sets that many swimmers use. However, further studies focusing on specific aspects of intensity and pace calculation within USRPT sets are needed for comprehensive understanding. In conclusion, USRPT appears to be a submaximal variation of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) with low blood lactate relevance to swimming events. Also, the pace calculation must be implemented considering the different demands of each point of a swimming event.
