Abstract Introduction: A recent revision of the generic classification of the Trochilidae based on DNA sequences revealed many inconsistencies with the current generic classification, largely based on plumage characters subject to homoplasy, especially in the Trochilini, the largest tribe. A thorough generic reorganization brought the classification into accord with the phylogeny, but due to lack of genetic data, two species remained unclassified. One of these was the Mangrove Hummingbird, "Amazilia" boucardi, endemic to Costa Rica and included in the IUCN red list of threatened species. Objective: To obtain molecular evidence to clarify the generic relationships of "A." boucardi. Methods: We isolated DNA from tissues of this species and amplified 4 nuclear and 4 mitochondrial fragments and compared these with homologous fragments from 56 species in the Trochilini, constructing phylogenetic trees with maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods. Results: Our phylogenetic analyses confirmed the placement of boucardi in the Trochilini and definitely excluded it from Amazilia but placed it with high confidence in the genus Chrysuronia Bonaparte, 1850, within which its closest relative is C. coeruleogularis, which also inhabits mangroves. Conclusions: Our genetic data based on nuclear and mitochondrial regions clearly indicate the relationship of A. boucardi and L. coeruleogularis. Moreover, it is also supported by their habitat distribution in the mangroves of the Pacific coast of Costa Rica and Western Panama. Therefore, we suggested to exclude A. boucardi as "incertae sedis".


Resumen Introducción: Una revisión reciente de la clasificación de la familia Trochilidae con base en secuencias de ADN demostró muchas incongruencias con la clasificación genérica previa, que había sido hecho con base en caracteres del plumaje muy sujetos a homoplasia, especialmente en la tribu más grande, Trochillini. Una reorganización de los géneros logró llevar su clasificación genérica a la concordancia con la filogenia, pero debido a la ausencia de datos genéticos, dos especies permanecieron sin clasificar. Una de estas fue el colibrí de manglar Amazilia boucardi, una especie endémica de Costa Rica, considerada como amenazada en la lista roja de la UICN. Objetivo: Obtener evidencia molecular para esclarecer las relaciones genéricas de A. boucardi. Métodos: Se aisló ADN de tejidos de esta especie y se amplificaron 4 fragmentos de ADN del núcleo y 5 de la mitocondria, y se compararon con fragmentos homólogos de 56 especies en la tribu Trochillini, generando árboles filogenéticos con métodos de máxima verosimilitud y bayesiano. Resultados: Los análisis filogénticos obtenidos confirmaron la ubicación de boucardi en Trochilini y definitivamente la excluyó del género Amazilia, pero la ubicó con un alto grado de confianza en el género Chrysuronia Bonaparte, 1850, dentro los cuales su pariente más cercano es C. coeruleogularis, que también habita manglares. Conclusiones: Nuestros datos genéticos basados en regiones nucleares y mitocondriales indican claramente la relación entre A. boucardi and L. coeruleogularis. Es más, lo anterior se sustenta por su distribución en los manglares de la costa Pacífica de Costa Rica y oeste de Panamá. Por lo tanto, sugerimos excluir a A. boucardi como "incertae sedis".

Species in the parasitic isopod family Cabiropidae are known to utilise various isopods as hosts but there are currently no records of members parasitising anthuroid hosts. We describe Anthuroniscus gen. nov. for three new cabiropid species, Anthuroniscus shimomurai sp. nov. , Anthuroniscus dentatus sp. nov. and Anthuroniscus latus sp. nov. , all of which are parasitic on anthuroid isopods. Anthuroniscus gen. nov. differs from the other 14 cabiropid genera and 10 genera treated as family incertae sedis in females having an elongate, dorsally compressed, posteriorly tapering body with six pairs of lateral bulges; and cryptoniscus larvae in the following combination of characters: (1) eyes lacking, (2) antennular article 1 with eight teeth on the posterior margin, (3) uropodal exopod and endopod rectangular rather than tapering, and endopod longer than exopod, and (4) pleotelson trapezoidal, 2× as wide as long. Anthuroniscus shimomurai sp. nov. was parasitic on Mesanthura sp. from Kaichu Doro, Uruma, Okinawa, south-western Japan; A. dentatus sp. nov. on Accalathura sp. from Irabu Island, Miyako Islands, Okinawa; and A. latus sp. nov. on Colanthura nigra from Kanagawa, central Japan. In pairwise comparisons, the three new species showed p -distances of 0.6-1.3% for the 18S rRNA gene (1440 positions); and A. shimomurai sp. nov. and A. latus sp. nov. showed a p -distance of 36.2% for the 16S rRNA gene (412 positions). In an 18S -based maximum-likelihood tree, an Anthuroniscus gen. nov. clade was the sister group to Cryptoniscoidea sp., parasitic on an ostracod species. BACKGROUND: Fungi clinically relevant to human skin comprise prevalent commensals and well-known pathogens. Only rarely human skin harbours fungi that evade identification. OBJECTIVE: To characterise an enigmatic specimen isolated from a skin lesion. METHODS: A comprehensive clinical and mycological workup including conventional methods for phenotypic characterisation and sequencing based on internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large subunit (LSU) regions to infer a phylogenetic tree. RESULTS: Cultures on common solid media were macroscopically inconspicuous initially until mycelial tufts developed on the surface, notably on potato dextrose agar. Polymorphous chlamydospores were detected but no aleurospores and ascomata. At 26°C, the isolate grew on standard agars, plant materials and garden soil and utilised peptone, keratins, lipids, inulin, erythrocytes and cellulose. It also grew at 5°C and at 37°C. Nucleotide sequences of its ITS region showed 93% similarity to sequences of different Malbranchea species. The closest matches among LSU rRNA sequences were obtained with the genera Amauroascus, Arthroderma, Auxarthronopsis and Malbranchea (93%-95%). A combined phylogenetic analysis placed the fungus in a sister clade to Neogymnomycetaceae, classified as incertae sedis in Onygenales, on a large distance to either Diploospora rosea or 'Amauroascus' aureus. CONCLUSIONS: The genus Inopinatus gen. nov. (MB854685) with the species Inopinatus corneliae sp. nov. (MB854687) is introduced to accommodate our isolate (holotype: DSM 116806; isotypes: CBS 151104, IHEM 29063). Probably Inopinatus corneliae is a geophilic species that, although potentially harmful, was no relevant pathogen in our case. Its ecology, epidemiology and pathogenicity need to be further clarified.

Praesagittifera naikaiensis is an acoel flatworm that inhabits the sandy beaches in the intertidal zone of the Seto Inland Sea. This species carries Tetraselmis sp., a green unicellular chlorophyte, as a symbiont in its body, and depends on algal photosynthetic products to survive. However, the eggs of P. naikaiensis contain no symbiotic algae, and juvenile P. naikaiensis acquire symbionts from the surrounding environment through horizontal transfer after hatching, thereby establishing new symbiotic relationships in each generation. Other acoel species, Symsagittifera spp., also inhabit the Seto Inland Sea shores and acquire symbiotic green algae via horizontal transfers. To characterize their symbionts, these acoels were collected from a wide area of the Seto Inland Sea and partial nucleotide sequences of the chloroplast ribulose diphosphate carboxylase large subunit (rbcL) of the symbiotic algae were determined and used for molecular phylogenetic analysis. Symbionts of both P. naikaiensis and Symsagittifera spp. belonged to the genus Tetraselmis but were phylogenetically distant, and both species established symbiotic relationships with different symbionts even when they were sympatric. To test whether each species selects specific algae in the environment for symbiosis, we established algal strains from P. naikaiensis and Symsagittifera sp. symbionts and conducted uptake experiments on aposymbiotic juveniles of P. naikaiensis. The results suggest that symbiotic algae from Symsagittifera could be taken up by P. naikaiensis juveniles, but were unable to establish a normal symbiotic relationship with the juveniles.

The Coleoptera Cerambycidae (longicorn beetles) use wood under different states (living healthy, freshly snapped, completely rot, etc.) in a species-specific manner for their larval diet. Larvae of some Cerambycidae groups have mycetomes, accessory organs associated with the midgut that harbor fungal symbiont cells. The symbionts are thought to improve nutrient conditions; however, this has yet to be shown experimentally. To deduce the evolutionary history of this symbiosis, we investigated the characteristics of the mycetomes in the larvae of longicorn beetles collected in Japan. Lepturinae, Necydalinae, and Spondylidinae are the only groups that possess mycetomes, and these three groups' mycetomes and corresponding fungal cells exhibit different characteristics between the groups. However, the phylogenetic relationship of symbiont yeasts does not coincide with that of the corresponding longicorn beetle species, suggesting they have not co-speciated. The imperfect vertical transmission of symbiont yeasts from female to offspring is a mechanism that could accommodate the host-symbiont phylogenetic incongruence. Some Lepturinae species secondarily lost mycetomes. The loss is associated with their diet choice, suggesting that different conditions between feeding habits could have allowed species to discard this organ. We found that symbiont fungi encapsulated in the mycetomes are dispensable for larval growth if sufficient nutrients are given, suggesting that the role of symbiotic fungi could be compensated by the food larvae take. Aegosoma sinicum is a longicorn beetle classified to the subfamily Prioninae, which does not possess mycetomes. However, this species contains a restricted selection of yeast species in the larval gut, suggesting that the symbiosis between longicorn beetles and yeasts emerged before acquiring the mycetomes.

The Japanese Archipelago hosts a rich butterfly fauna, and elucidating the genetic structures of multiple species is necessary to clarify their formation processes. This study aimed to reveal the genetic structure and distribution formation process of Parnassius citrinarius, which is widely distributed across the Japanese Archipelago from Hokkaido to Shikoku, through phylogeographic analysis based on the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene sequence. Thirty haplotypes were revealed from 311 individuals from 47 sites, indicating significant differences in the genetic structures between the eastern and western parts of the Japanese Archipelago. In Eastern Japan, multiple genetic clusters were found, with some sites harboring two clusters. The divergence times among populations in Eastern Japan were relatively recent, and no genetic differentiation was observed between regions, including between Hokkaido and Honshu, which are separated by a narrow strait. In contrast, in Western Japan, including Shikoku, unique genetic clusters were observed in each region. The phylogenetic relationships among populations were regionally clustered, and the divergence times were relatively ancient. The distribution and genetic structure of P. citrinarius in the Japanese Archipelago have been significantly influenced by temperature fluctuations and the presence of geographical barriers during the Pleistocene glacial-interglacial cycles, including the potential formation of refugia in Western Japan.

Sea urchins have a wide variety of symbionts on their body surfaces and inside their bodies. Copepods of the genus Clavisodalis (Taeniacanthidae) collected from the esophagus of sea urchins of the genera Diadema and Echinothrix in southern Japan were identified based on their morphological characteristics, and molecular analysis was conducted to determine whether genetic variation occurs in copepods from different localities and hosts. Morphological observations identified individuals from southern Japan as Clavisodalis sentifer Dojiri and Humes, 1982, making this the first record of this species in the northern hemisphere and the first record of its genus in Japan. Morphological and molecular analysis suggested that the copepod specimens collected from multiple hosts across two genera would be the same species. Considering the typically observed high level of host specificity among taeniacanthid copepods, the utilization of hosts from two genera by C. sentifer is noteworthy.

Insoluble phosphorous compounds solubilization by soil bacteria is of great relevance since it puts available the phosphorus to be used by plants. The production of organic acids is the main microbiological mechanism by which insoluble inorganic phosphorus compounds are solubilized. In Gram negative bacteria, gluconic acid is synthesized by the activity of the holoenzyme glucose dehydrogenase-pyrroloquinoline quinine named GDH-PQQ. The use of marker genes is a very useful tool to evaluate the persistence of the introduced bacteria and allow to follow-up the effect of biotic and abiotic factors on these beneficial microorganisms in the soil. In previous studies we detected the presence of the pqqE gene in a great percentage of both non-culturable and culturable native soil bacteria. The objective of this study was to analyze the phylogeny of the sequence of pqqE gene and its potential for the study of phosphate solubilizing bacteria from pure and mixed bacterial cultures and rhizospheric soil samples. For this, the presence of the pqqE gene in the genome of phosphate solubilizing bacteria that belong to several bacteria was determined by PCR. Also, this gene was analyzed from mixed bacterial cultures and rhizospheric soil associated to peanut plants inoculated or not with phosphate solubilizing bacteria. For this, degenerate primers designed from several bacterial genera and specific primers for the genus Pseudomonas spp., designed in this study, were used. DNA template used from simple or mixed bacterial cultures and from rhizospheric soil samples was obtained using two different DNA extraction techniques. Results indicated that pqqE gene amplification product was found in the genome of all Gram negative phosphate solubilizing bacteria analyzed. It was possible to detect this gene in the DNA obtained from mixed cultures where these bacteria grew in interaction with other microorganisms and in that obtained from rhizospheric soil samples inoculated or not with these bacteria. The phylogenetic analysis indicated that pqqE gene is a conserved gene within related genera. In conclusion, pqqE gene could be a potential marker for the study of phosphate solubilizing bacterial populations.

The brewing industry is constantly evolving, driven by the quest for novel flavours and fermentation characteristics that cater to evolving consumer preferences. This study explores the genetic and phenotypic diversity of European farmhouse yeasts, traditionally used in rural brewing practices and maintained outside of pure culture industrial yeast selection. We isolated landrace brewing yeast strains from diverse geographical locations across Europe, including Norway, Lithuania, Latvia, and Russia, and also included African farmhouse brewing strains from Ghana. Our genomic analysis using long-read and short-read whole genome sequencing uncovered a genetically distinct group that diverges from industrial brewing yeasts. This group, which is closely related to ale brewing strains, is preliminarily named the 'European Farmhouse' group and shows greater predicted admixture from Asian fermentation strains. Through genomic and phenotypic analyses, including flavour metabolite analysis via headspace gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, sugar metabolite analysis via high-performance liquid chromatography, and wort fermentation analysis, we found a broad spectrum of fermentation capabilities, from rapid and efficient fermentation to unique aroma and flavour compound profiles, potentially offering novel traits for brewing applications. This study highlights the importance of preservation of brewing cultural heritage knowledge and resources including yeast cultures. KEY POINTS: • A large set of geographically diverse farmhouse brewing strains were characterized • Norwegian and Baltic farmhouse brewing strains form a distinct genetic group • Farmhouse strains show considerable diversity in fermentation and flavour formation.

The legume albumin-1 gene family, arising after nodulation, encodes linear a- and b-chain peptides for nutrient storage and defense. Intriguingly, in one prominent legume, Clitoria ternatea, the b-chains are replaced by domains producing ultra-stable cyclic peptides called cyclotides. The mechanism of this gene hijacking is until now unknown. Cyclotides require recruitment of ligase-type asparaginyl endopeptidases (AEPs) for maturation (cyclization), necessitating co-evolution of two gene families. Here we compare a chromosome-level C. ternatea genome with grain legumes to reveal an 8 to 40-fold expansion of the albumin-1 gene family, enabling the additional loci to undergo diversification. Iterative rounds of albumin-1 duplication and diversification create four albumin-1 enriched genomic islands encoding cyclotides, where they are physically grouped by similar pI and net charge values. We identify an ancestral hydrolytic AEP that exhibits neofunctionalization and multiple duplication events to yield two ligase-type AEPs. We propose cyclotides arise by convergence in C. ternatea where their presence enhances defense from biotic attack, thus increasing fitness compared to lineages with linear b-chains and ultimately driving the replacement of b-chains with cyclotides.

Methanogenic hydrocarbon degradation can be carried out by archaea that couple alkane oxidation directly to methanogenesis, or by syntrophic associations of bacteria with methanogenic archaea. However, metagenomic analyses of methanogenic environments have revealed other archaea with potential for alkane degradation but apparent inability to form methane, suggesting the existence of other modes of syntrophic hydrocarbon degradation. Here, we provide experimental evidence supporting the existence of a third mode of methanogenic degradation of hydrocarbons, mediated by syntrophic cooperation between archaeal partners. We collected sediment samples from a hot spring sediment in Tengchong, China, and enriched Hadarchaeota under methanogenic conditions at 60 °C, using hexadecane as substrate. We named the enriched archaeon Candidatus Melinoarchaeum fermentans DL9YTT1. We used 13C-substrate incubations, metagenomic, metatranscriptomic and metabolomic analyses to show that Ca. Melinoarchaeum uses alkyl-coenzyme M reductases (ACRs) to activate hexadecane via alkyl-CoM formation. Ca. Melinoarchaeum likely degrades alkanes to carbon dioxide, hydrogen and acetate, which can be used as substrates by hydrogenotrophic and acetoclastic methanogens such as Methanothermobacter and Methanothrix.

BACKGROUND: China is the hotspot of global freshwater crab diversity, but their wild populations are facing severe pressures associated with anthropogenic factors, necessitating the need to map their taxonomic and genetic diversity and design conservation policies. RESULTS: Herein, we sequenced the mitochondrial genome of a Chinese freshwater crab species Bottapotamon fukienense, and found that it is fragmented into two chromosomes. We confirmed that fragmentation was not limited to a single specimen or population. Chromosome 1 comprised 15,111 base pairs (bp) and there were 26 genes and one pseudogene (pseudo-nad1) encoded on it. Chromosome 2 comprised 8,173 bp and there were 12 genes and two pseudogenes (pseudo-trnL2 and pseudo-rrnL) encoded on it. Combined, they comprise the largest mitogenome (23,284 bp) among the Potamidae. Bottapotamon was the only genus in the Potamidae dataset exhibiting rearrangements of protein-coding genes. Bottapotamon fukienense exhibited average rates of sequence evolution in the dataset and did not differ in selection pressures from the remaining Potamidae. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first experimentally confirmed fragmentation of a mitogenome in crustaceans. While the mitogenome of B. fukienense exhibited multiple signs of elevated mitogenomic architecture evolution rates, including the exceptionally large size, duplicated genes, pseudogenisation, rearrangements of protein-coding genes, and fragmentation, there is no evidence that this is matched by elevated sequence evolutionary rates or changes in selection pressures.

Freshwater samples (n = 199) were obtained from 41 sites with contrasting land-uses (avian, low impact, dairy, urban, sheep and beef, and mixed sheep, beef and dairy) and the E. coli phylotype of 3980 isolates (20 per water sample enrichment) was determined. Eight phylotypes were identified with B1 (48.04%), B2 (14.87%) and A (14.79%) the most abundant. Escherichia marmotae (n = 22), and Escherichia ruysiae (n = 1), were rare (0.68%) suggesting that these environmental strains are unlikely to confound water quality assessments. Phylotypes A and B1 were overrepresented in dairy and urban sites (p < 0.0001), whilst B2 were overrepresented in low impact sites (p < 0.0001). Pathogens ((Salmonella, Campylobacter, Cryptosporidium or Giardia) and the presence of diarrhoeagenic E. coli-associated genes (stx and eae) were detected in 89.9% (179/199) samples, including 80.5% (33/41) of samples with putative non-recent faecal inputs. Quantitative PCR to detect microbial source tracking targets from human, ruminant and avian contamination were concordant with land-use type and E. coli phylotype abundance. This study demonstrated that a potential recreational health risk remains where pathogens occurred in water samples with low E. coli concentration, potential non-recent faecal sources, low impact sites and where human, ruminant and avian faecal sources were absent.

Two new species of lung-dwelling nematodes are described from North American frogs: Rhabdias aurorae n. sp. from Rana aurora and Rhabdias conni n. sp. from Rana clamitans and Rana catesbeiana from Arkansas; the latter species was also found in Oklahoma and Georgia. Rhabdias aurorae n. sp. differs from other Nearctic congeners in the combination of the following characteristics: buccal capsule 22-25 µm wide, elongated tail covered with inflated cuticle, esophagus with prominent dilatation in anterior part and 6 small circumoral lips. Rhabdias conni n. sp. is morphologically closest to Rhabdias ranae Walton, 1929 and Rhabdias joaquinensisIngles, 1936; it differs from them in the shape of lateral pseudolabia, the dimensions of the body, and the egg size. Both new species were found to be significantly different from the Nearctic congeners in the nucleotide sequences of nuclear ribosomal DNA (18S-ITS-28S region), 12S, and CO1 mitochondrial genes. The 2 new species differ from other currently sequenced Nearctic congeners by 1.1-2.7% of nucleotide positions in the nuclear rDNA region, 1.3-3.4% in the 12S gene, and 3.4-9.4% in CO1 gene. Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences placed both new species into the clade consisting of Nearctic and Neotropical Rhabdias spp. The position of Rh. aurorae n. sp. within the clade is uncertain because of a polytomy, but Rh. conni n. sp. is nested within the "Rh. joaquinensis complex" related to Rh. ranae and Rhabdias tarichaeKuzmin, Tkach, and Snyder, 2003. The phylogenetic analysis based on nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences has revealed 3 evolutionary host-switching events from anuran to caudatan hosts among Rhabdias spp. that occurred in the Nearctic and Palearctic. The molecular phylogeny also suggests that Rhabdias may have originally evolved in what is now Africa.

Lectin receptor-like kinase(LecRLK) is a class of phytokinase with lectin conserved domain, which plays an important role in plant resistance to biological and abiotic stresses, as well as plant growth and development. Cannabis sativa is an important multi-purpose plant, widely used in food, textile, medicine, and other fields. Genome-wide screening and expression analysis of the LecRLK family of C. sativa were performed in this paper, so as to provide scientific reference for functional analysis of the LecRLK family of C. sativa. Based on BLAST and HMM methods, 93 LecRLKs were identified in the whole genome of C. sativa, including 69 G types, 23 L types, and one C types. Subsequently, a series of bioinformatics analyses were performed on the LecRLK family members, and the physicochemical properties of the protein of the LecRLK family members were initially revealed. The prediction of cis-acting elements of promoters in family members showed that family members were regulated by hormones and stress response. The expression analysis showed that some family members were highly expressed in the roots, which may participate in the process of stress resistance. Several members were highly expressed in female flowers and may be involved in female flower development. This study provides a theoretical basis for further study of LecRLK gene function. Meanwhile, the expression analysis screens candidate LecRLK members who may participate in the resistance of C. sativa, which provides a theoretical basis for the subsequent selection of C. sativa varieties against resistance.

The function of the Trihelix transcription factor is that it plays an important role in many abiotic stresses, especially in the signaling pathway of low temperature, drought, flood, saline, abscisic acid, methyl jasmonate, and other abiotic stresses. However, there are few studies on the Trihelix gene family of ginseng. In this study, 41 Trihelix gene family members were identified and screened from the ginseng genome database, and their physicochemical properties, cis-acting elements, subcellular localization, chromosomal assignment, and abiotic stress-induced expression patterns were analyzed by bioinformatics methods. The results showed that 85% of Trihelix family members of ginseng were located in the nucleus, and the main secondary structure of Trihelix protein was random coil and α helix. In the promoter region of Trihelix, cis-acting regulatory elements related to various abiotic stresses such as low temperature, hormone response, and growth and development were identified. Through the collinearity analysis of interspecific Trihelix transcription factors of model plants Arabidopsis thaliana and ginseng, 19 collinear gene pairs were found between A. thaliana and ginseng, and no collinear gene pairs existed on chromosomes 3, 6, and 12 only. qRT-PCR analysis showed that the expression of GWHGBEIJ010320.1 was significantly up-regulated under low temperature stress, a significant response to low temperature stress. This study lays a foundation for further research on the role of the Trihelix transcription factor of ginseng in abiotic stress, as well as the growth and development of ginseng.

Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) is a common pediatric infection that remains a significant cause of childhood morbidity and mortality worldwide, especially in low-income regions. Thus, the objective of this study was to detect human adenovirus (HAdV) and non-polio enterovirus (NPEV) in fecal samples from the Gastroenteritis Surveillance Network, and to identify circulating strains by nucleotide sequencing. A total of 801 fecal samples were tested using qPCR/RT-qPCR, and 657 (82.0%) were inoculated into HEp-2C and RD cell lines. The HAdV and NPEV positivity rates obtained using qPCR/RT-qPCR were 31.7% (254/801) and 10.5% (84/801), respectively, with 5.4% (43/801) co-detection. Cytopathic effect was observed in 9.6% (63/657) of patients, 2.7% (18/657) associated with HAdV, and 6.2% (41/657) associated with NPEV after testing by ICC-PCR. A comparison of the two methodologies demonstrated an agreement of 93.5% for EVNP and 64.4% for HAdV. These two viruses were detected throughout the study period, with HAdV positivity rates ranging from 41% in Amapá to 18% in Pará. The NEPV varied from 18% in Pará/Rondônia to 3% in Acre. The most affected age group was over 60 months for both HAdV and NPEV. Samples previously positive for rotavirus and norovirus, which did not show a major difference in the presence or absence of diarrhea, fever, and vomiting, were excluded from the clinical analyses of these two viruses. These viruses circulated over five years, with a few months of absence, mainly during the months corresponding to the waves of SARS-CoV-2 infection in Brazil. Five HAdV species were identified (A, B, C, D, and F), with a greater predominance of HAdV-F41 (56.5%) followed by HAdV-C (15.2%). Three NPEV species (A, B, and C) were detected, with serotypes E14 (19.3%) and CVA-24 (16.1%) being the most prevalent. The present study revealed a high diversity of NPEV and HAdV types circulating in children with AGE symptoms in the northern region of Brazil.

Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) are one of the most studied groups of arthropods worldwide due to their high transmission capacity for pathogens, including viruses and parasites. During June to October 2022, the prevalence of mosquito species in 12 intensive pig farms from 12 representative administrative regions in Hunan province of China was investigated using traps with ultraviolet light. All collected mosquitoes were counted and identified to species according to morphological and molecular methods. A total of 4,443 mosquito specimens were collected in the pig farms, and they represented one family, four genera and nine species. Culex pipiens pipiens (24%) was the most common mosquito species, followed by Armigeres subalbatus (23.4%) and Culex tritaeniorhynchus (20.6%). Phylogenetic analyses based on mitochondrial cox1 sequences revealed all mosquito species from present study grouping into distinct monophyletic groups corresponding to nine known mosquito species with strongly supported. The results of the present investigation have implications for the ongoing control of mosquito infestation in pig farms in Hunan province, China. This is the first report of mosquito populations in intensive pig farms in Hunan province, China.

The main morphological and genetic characterization of seven introduced almond cultivars in Bosnia & Herzegovina was conducted. The almond cultivars included three from Italy (Tuono, Genco, Supernova), two from France (Ferragnes and Ferraduel), and two from the USA (Texas and Nonpareil). Genetic characterization was utilized by using 10 microsatellite markers, with nine markers from Prunus persicae and one from Prunus armeniaca. The results of genetic characterization revealed an average of 5.40 alleles per primer per locus. The average number of effective alleles for the 10 SSR loci of introduced cultivars was 3.92. The Shannon Information Index averaged 1.41. The observed heterozygosity (Ho) and expected heterozygosity (He) averaged 0.53 and 0.69, respectively. Morphological analyses of the fruit of introduced almond cultivars in Bosnia & Herzegovina indicated favorable agroecological conditions for their cultivation and spread. The results suggest that these introduced almond cultivars could be utilized in breeding programs to enhance the genetic diversity of the local almond population in Bosnia & Herzegovina.

Explaining the maintenance of genetic variation in fitness-related traits within populations is a fundamental challenge in ecology and evolutionary biology. Frequency-dependent selection (FDS) is one mechanism that can maintain such variation, especially when selection favours rare variants (negative FDS). However, our general knowledge about the occurrence of FDS, its strength and direction remain fragmented, limiting general inferences about this important evolutionary process. We systematically reviewed the published literature on FDS and assembled a database of 747 effect sizes from 101 studies to analyse the occurrence, strength, and direction of FDS, and the factors that could explain heterogeneity in FDS. Using a meta-analysis, we found that overall, FDS is more commonly negative, although not significantly when accounting for phylogeny. An analysis of absolute values of effect sizes, however, revealed the widespread occurrence of modest FDS. However, negative FDS was only significant in laboratory experiments and non-significant in mesocosms and field-based studies. Moreover, negative FDS was stronger in studies measuring fecundity and involving resource competition over studies using other fitness components or focused on other ecological interactions. Our study unveils key general patterns of FDS and points in future promising research directions that can help us understand a long-standing fundamental problem in evolutionary biology and its consequences for demography and ecological dynamics.
