RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to investigate managers' leadership styles, from the perspective of registered nurses, and its effects on the quality of nursing care in both the private and public healthcare sectors. An additional aim is to assess the relationship between leadership styles and particular organisational outcomes. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The sample for this quantitative research study was comprised of 400 respondents, among which 50 were nurse managers, 150 were staff nurses and the remaining respondents were patients. Two questionnaires were used in this study: the multi-factor leadership questionnaire (MLQ) 5X short and a patient satisfaction with nursing care quality questionnaire (PSNCQQ). FINDINGS: A positive correlation was found between the transformational leadership style with leadership outcomes and the quality of nursing care (r=0.811**, 0.759**, 0.789** and 0.877** for extra effort, job satisfaction, leader effectiveness and quality, respectively). PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Although the sample study was extensive, a possible limitation is that the research utilised convenient sample who are working in the private and public healthcare sectors thus limiting the generalisability of the study. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: This study was proposed as a baseline for upcoming studies in areas of education, nursing practice, research and quality. Moreover, this study was expected to be imperative to the hospital's management, in order to improve the current level of leadership, education models and advancement programs for the healthcare sector's senior staff.

AIM: Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is a common progressive chronic renal disease. Podocyte injury and loss are the postulated pivotal events that trigger FSGS. In this study, the authors aim to examine the evolution of FSGS in murine models histologically, ultrastructurally and immunohistochemically with special emphasis on podocytes and parietal epithelial cells (PECs). MATERIAL AND METHODS: FSGS resembling primary FSGS in humans was initiated in Wistar rats using intravenous Adriamycin injections. Blood and urine analysis were performed at 0, 8, and 12 weeks. Both the control kidneys and the test kidneys were harvested at 8 and 12 weeks, examined histologically and ultrastructurally and the findings correlated with the glomerular expression of immunostains specific for podocytes (WT-1) and for activated PECs (CD44). RESULTS: FSGS developed in both 8 and 12 weeks test groups showing progressive proteinuria, podocytopathy and segmental glomerular scarring. There was a decrease in the glomerular expression of WT-1 with a concurrent increase in the glomerular expression of CD44, indicating podocyte loss with synchronous increase in activated PECs. The evolving FSGS correlated negatively with podocytes and positively with activated PECs. CONCLUSION: Our study shows that with podocyte injury there is podocyte effacement and loss, proteinuria, glomerular segmental adhesion and scarring, all culminating in FSGS. In addition, there is activation, hyperplasia and hypertrophy of PECs. This demonstrates that both podocyte loss and PEC activation promote FSGS. Our findings are consistent with recent investigations. More studies are required to further understand the role of these cells in the evolution of FSGS and subsequently introduce new targeted treatment modalities.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies demonstrated that leadership styles are the basis of daily interactions between leaders and employees and facilitate and enhance work processes. AIM: This study aimed to explore how the leadership styles of nurse leaders affect job satisfaction among working nurses. METHODS: Quantitative, descriptive and comparative methods were used. Three main Ministry of Health hospitals in different areas of Jordan and three private hospitals in Amman were selected. RESULTS: Among the leadership styles measured by the Multi-factor Leadership Questionnaire 5X, transformational leadership had been used by head nurse managers in both settings more than transactional leadership and passive-avoidant leadership. The level of job satisfaction among nursing staff was higher in public hospitals than in private hospitals in this study. A positive relationship was found between the overall score for transformational leadership and job satisfaction (r = 0.374**). The overall transactional leadership score correlated positively with job satisfaction (r = 0.391**). Conversely, the overall correlation between passive-avoidant leadership and job satisfaction was negative (r = -0.240). CONCLUSION: The increased development of transformational leadership behaviours increases nurses' job satisfaction and thus contributes to an increased retention of nurses. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: The ability of hospitals to address the leadership styles of head nurses and their impacts on job satisfaction will be strengthened.

Drosophila suzukii (D. suzukii), commonly known as the spotted wing drosophila, is a highly invasive crop pest that is difficult to control using chemical insecticides. To address the urgent need for alternative and more sustainable control strategies, the sterile insect technique (SIT) is improved, which involves the release of sterilized male insects to mate with fertile conspecifics, thereby reducing the size of the pest population in the subsequent generation. The three critical aspects that influence the success of SIT programs in D. suzukii are addressed. First, an accurate and nondestructive method is established to determine the sex of individual insects based on the differential weight of male and female pupae. Second, conditions for X-ray sterilization are systematically tested and an optimal dose (90 kV/40 Gy) is identified that ensures the efficient production of sterile D. suzukii for release. Finally, the inherent thermosensitivity of D. suzukii males is exploited to develop a temperature-based sterilization technique, offering an alternative or additional SIT method for this pest. These advances will contribute to the development of a comprehensive and effective strategy for the management of D. suzukii populations, reducing their impact on agriculture and helping to safeguard crop yields.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is becoming a major challenge in healthcare systems, and this has necessitated the study of the various risk factors. As the number of people with hypertension, diabetes mellitus and obesity increases, the problem is expected to worsen. This review paper evaluates what can be done to eliminate or reduce the risk of stroke. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the research is to evaluate the risk factors for stroke. The paper also aims to understand how these risks can be handled to avoid incidences of stroke. METHOD: Published clinical trials of stroke risk factors studies were recognised by a search of EMBASE and MEDLINE databases with keywords hypertension, blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, stroke or cardiovascular disease, or prospective study, and meta-analysis. RESULTS: The findings of this review are that the prevention of stroke starts with identifying risk factors for stroke, most of the patients diagnosed with stroke have various risk factors. Consequently, it is a very significant to identify all the risk factors for stroke as well as to teach the patient how to dominate them. CONCLUSION: after summarising all the studies mentioned in the paper, it can be established that hypertension and diabetes mellitus are a stroke risk factors and correlated in patients with atherosclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: This relative study includes categorical exploration of the economics, demographic, political, social and financial data to realize the basic reasons of the present healthcare systems in these countries. METHODS: Descriptive and comparative methods were used. This study tries to relate the healthcare systems of Jordan with that of France to produce effective lessons that can be helpful for guiding future developments down the correct path. RESULTS: Depending on many factors such as life expectancy, the mortality rate in infants, universal medical coverage and availability of healthcare services to the masses, significant disparities between the two systems were found. CONCLUSION: Through this study, it has been concluded that the healthcare system of Jordan has a lot to improve with regard to standards of services offered, and there are many aspects to be learned from the French healthcare system by the Jordanian one, including the healthcare coverage system and the cost-sharing strategies.
