RESUMO

Three new aurantiactinomyxon types are described from the oligochaete Ilyodrilus templetoni (Southern, 1909) (Naididae) collected from a northern Portuguese estuary, based on light microscopy and sequencing of the 18S rDNA. The addition of I. templetoni to the group of freshwater annelids known to be permissive for aurantiactinomyxon development reinforces the crucial role of naidids in the evolution and settlement of myxozoans in estuarine environments. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses of a comprehensive 18S rDNA dataset placed the novel types within the Paramyxidium clade. This positioning suggests them as probable life cycle counterparts to Paramyxidium spp. that most likely infect the European eel Anguilla anguilla, as the sole representative of Elopomorpha in Portuguese rivers. Although distance estimation revealed a genetic difference of only 0.4 % between Aurantiactinomyxon types 1 and 3, this value was determined to be representative of interspecific variability based on the consistent matching of both genotypes with distinct actinospore morphologies, and potential richness of closely related species of Paramyxidium infecting the European eel in Portuguese waters. The clustering of aurantiactinomyxon types within distinct myxosporean lineages, representative of the suborders Variisporina and Platysporina, demonstrates that the aurantiactinomyxon morphotype is highly functional in promoting myxozoan infections in estuarine environments.

The dramatic decline of European eel ( Anguilla anguilla) populations over recent decades has attracted considerable attention and concern. Furthermore, little is known about the sensitivity of the early stages of eels to projected future environmental change. Here, we investigated, for the first time, the potential combined effects of ocean warming (OW; Δ + 4°C; 18°C) and acidification (OA; Δ - 0.4 pH units) on the survival and migratory behaviour of A. anguilla glass eels, namely their preference towards riverine cues (freshwater and geosmin). Recently arrived individuals were exposed to isolated and combined OW and OA conditions for 100 days, adjusting for the salinity gradients associated with upstream migration. A two-choice test was used to investigate migratory activity and shifts in preference towards freshwater environments. While OW decreased survival and increased migratory activity, OA appears to hinder migratory response, reducing the preference for riverine cues. Our results suggest that future conditions could potentially favour an early settlement of glass eels, reducing the proportion of fully migratory individuals. Further research into the effects of climate change on eel migration and habitat selection is needed to implement efficient conservation plans for this critically endangered species.

We describe, morphologically and molecularly, a new actinosporean from the intestinal epithelium of the freshwater oligochaete Ilyodrilus templetoni in the upper estuary of the River Minho, Northern Portugal. Mature actinospores resembled both echinactinomyxon and raabeia types, emphasizing the previously known lack of a clear boundary between these 2 collective groups. Historically, raabeia and echinactinomyxon types have been differentiated solely based on the shape of the valvular processes being curved or straight, respectively. Our observations, however, show that this morphological character is too variable for distinguishing between these 2 collective groups, since the actinospores of the raabeia described here displayed valvular processes that could either be straight, downward or upward curved. Several similar cases can be found in the available literature. Considering this overlap in actinospore morphology, we propose that echinactinomyxon be deemed invalid and its types be included in raabeia, as the latter constitutes the older of the 2 groups. Known echinactinomyxon types, however, should not be renamed as raabeia, as this would create unnecessary confusion. Accordingly, a more comprehensive definition of the raabeia collective group is provided. Phylogenetic analyses revealed polyphyletic clustering of raabeia/echinactinomyxon types among members of the myxosporean suborders Variisporina and Platysporina, reiterating the lack of agreement between actinosporean morphotypes and myxosporean genera. The new type described here specifically clusters within the Paramyxidium clade, alongside other SSU rDNA sequences of raabeia, echinactinomyxon, aurantiactinomyxon and synactinomyxon. Considering that most Paramyxidium spp. parasitize Anguilla anguilla (Linnaeus, 1758), future myxozoan surveys in the River Minho should include this species.

Mullets are ecologic and commercially important fish species. Their ubiquitous nature allows them to play critical roles in freshwater and marine ecosystems but makes them more vulnerable to diseases and parasitic infection. In this study, a myxozoan survey was performed on three species of mullet captured from a northern Portuguese river. The results disclose a high biodiversity, specifically due to the hyperdiversification of Myxobolus. Thirteen new species of this genus are described based on microscopic and molecular procedures: 7 from the thinlip grey mullet Chelon ramada, 2 from the thicklip grey mullet Chelon labrosus, and 4 from the flathead grey mullet Mugil cephalus. Myxobolus exiguus and Ellipsomyxa mugilis are further registered from their type host C. ramada, as well as six more myxospore morphotypes that possibly represent distinct Myxobolus species. Overall, the results obtained clearly show that the number of host-, site- and tissue-specific Myxobolus spp. is much higher than what would be expected in accordance to available literature. This higher biodiversity is therefore discussed as either being the result of the usage of poor discriminative criteria in previous studies, or as being a direct consequence of the biological and ecological traits of the parasite and of its vertebrate and invertebrate host communities. Bayesian inference, maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony analyses position the new species within a clade comprising all other Myxobolus spp. that infect mugiliform hosts, thus suggesting that this parasitic group has a monophyletic origin. Clustering of species in relation to the host genus is also revealed and strengthens the contention that the evolutionary history of mugiliform-infecting Myxobolus reflects that of its vertebrate hosts. In this view, the hyperdiversification of Myxobolus in mullet hosts is hypothesized to correlate with the processes of speciation that led to the ecological plasticity of mullets.

AIM: This study aimed to assess the eruption of impacted teeth in cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) after alveolar bone graft. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Research was carried out through a cross-sectional study at the Craniofacial Rehabilitation Center of the University General Hospital of the University of Cuiaba, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Variables related to cleft, cleft side, gender, age, laterality of cleft, impacted teeth, and orthodontic traction were analyzed. RESULTS: Forty-two patients treated at the institution from 2004 to 2011 were recruited. There were 54.76% males and 45.24% females. The age group between 9 and 11 years was most affected in 59.53% of cases. The unilateral cleft was the most prevalent (85.71%). A total of 57 impacted teeth were observed. Maxillary canine was the most prevalent impacted teeth (97.61%) and more frequent in transforamen incisor cleft (TIC) (76.3%). The orthodontic traction was needed in both maxillary canines and lateral incisor impacted teeth, 64.3 and 35.7% respectively. The orthodontic traction was needed only in TIC (p = 0.0101). CONCLUSION: The canine teeth were the most prevalent, mainly related to the TIC and all impacted teeth erupted spontaneously in the preforamen incisor cleft (PIC) after placement of the bone graft. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: There was spontaneous eruption of impacted teeth after secondary alveolar bone graft in CLP.

Orthodontic traction was required for both impacted maxillary canines and impacted lateral incisors (64.3 and 35.7% respectively). The orthodontic traction was required only in patients with a TIC (p = 0.0101). CONCLUSION: The canine teeth were the most commonly impacted teeth, found mainly in patients with a TIC. After placement of the alveolar bone graft in patients with a preforamen incisor cleft (PIC), all impacted teeth erupted spontaneously. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: An impacted tooth can have negative consequences on a patient's quality of life. Thus, a survey evaluating the incidence and prognosis of impacted teeth after an alveolar bone graft for CLP was important.

Natural gas (NG) has been regarded as a bridge fuel toward renewable sources and is expected to play a greater role in future global energy mix; however, a high degree of uncertainty exists concerning upstream (well-to-tank, WtT) greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of NG. In this study, a life-cycle (LC) model is built to assess uncertainty in WtT GHG emissions of liquefied NG (LNG) supplied to Europe by Nigeria. The 90% prediction interval of GHG intensity of Nigerian LNG was found to range between 14.9 and 19.3 g CO2 eq/MJ, with a mean value of 16.8 g CO2 eq/MJ. This intensity was estimated considering no venting practice in Nigerian fields. The mean estimation can shift up to 25 g CO2 eq when considering a scenario with a higher rate of venting emissions. A sensitivity analysis of the time horizon to calculate GHG intensity was also performed showing that higher GHG intensity and uncertainty are obtained for shorter time horizons, due to the higher impact factor of methane. The uncertainty calculated for Nigerian LNG, specifically regarding the gap of data for methane emissions, recommends initiatives to measure and report emissions and further LC studies to identify hotspots to reduce the GHG intensity of LNG chains.

Background: The paper presents an extensive fish sampling dataset spanning a long-term period from 2010 to 2019. The data were collected in Lenta Marina, an upstream area in the Minho Estuary of the NW Iberian Peninsula, which belongs to a LTSER (Long-Term Socio-Ecological Research) platform. To capture fish, fyke nets were utilised as the sampling method and deployed at Lenta Marina. This dataset offers valuable insights into the abundance of each collected taxa recorded over time. New information: The dataset reports a comprehensive compilation of data on the abundance of fish species observed in the area during the sampling period (includes zeroes when a given taxonomic entity was absent in a given sampling event). It provides a detailed record of the abundances of the fish community through time in a frequent sampling regime (on average, sampling was done every 6 days). The dataset shows that the amount of fish from invasive taxa exceeds the count of fish from native taxa in the Minho Estuary.

BACKGROUND: Acute schistosomiasis is a systemic hypersensitivity reaction against the migrating schistosomula and eggs. In this report, we describe an atypical outbreak of the disease with severe cases. Transmission occurred in a nonendemic area of Brazil, which became a new focus of transmission due to the in-migration of infected workers. METHODS: From December 2009 to March 2010, the 50 patients with acute schistosomiasis (group 1) bathed in a swimming pool supplied by a brook on a country estate in the outskirts of São João del Rei, Brazil. Thirty other subjects (group 2) living in the same area, who denied having contact with the swimming pool, volunteered to participate in the study. All participants were submitted to clinical, laboratory, and ultrasound examinations. RESULTS: Five of 50 (10%) patients were admitted to the hospital: 1 with myeloradiculopathy, 1 with diffuse pulmonary micronodules, and 3 with diarrhea and dehydration. All 5 had hypereosinophilia and prolonged fever. Group 1 patients more frequently had cercarial dermatitis (P = .01), blood in the stool (P = .04), and intra-abdominal lymph nodes (P = .001). All group 1 patients were treated with praziquantel; 1 patient with myeloradiculopathy also received oral prednisone (60 mg/day) for 6 months with complete recovery. CONCLUSIONS: This report describes the first time that patients from an outbreak of acute schistosomiasis have been compared to controls. Five subjects (10%) had severe manifestations of schistosomiasis. Diagnosis of the disease and its severity was delayed because physicians did not consider that an epidemic of schistosomiasis might emerge in a nonendemic area.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis mansoni is a major cause of portal fibrosis and portal hypertension. The Hedgehog pathway regulates fibrogenic repair in some types of liver injury. AIMS: Determine if Hedgehog pathway activation occurs during fibrosis progression in schistosomiasis and to determine if macrophage-related mechanisms are involved. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry was used to characterize the cells that generate and respond to Hedgehog ligands in 28 liver biopsies from patients with different grades of schistosomiasis fibrosis staged by ultrasound. Cultured macrophages (RAW264.7 and primary rat Kupffer cells) and primary rat liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSEC) were treated with schistosome egg antigen (SEA) and evaluated using qRT-PCR. Inhibition of the Hedgehog pathway was used to investigate its role in alternative activation of macrophages (M2) and vascular tube formation. RESULTS: Patients with schistosomiasis expressed more ligands (Shh and Ihh) and target genes (Patched and Gli2) than healthy individuals. Activated LSEC and myofibroblasts were Hedgehog responsive [Gli2(+)] and accumulated in parallel with fibrosis stage (P < 0.05). Double IHC for Ihh/CD68 showed that Ihh(+) cells were macrophages. In vitro studies demonstrated that SEA-stimulated macrophages to express Ihh and Shh mRNA (P < 0.05). Conditioned media from such macrophages induced luciferase production by Shh-LightII cells (P < 0.001) and Hedgehog inhibitors blocked this effect (P < 0.001). SEA-treated macrophages also up-regulated their own expression of M2 markers, and Hh pathway inhibitors abrogated this response (P < 0.01). Inhibition of the Hedgehog pathway in LSEC blocked SEA-induced migration and tube formation. CONCLUSION: SEA stimulates liver macrophages to produce Hh ligands, which promote alternative activation of macrophages, fibrogenesis and vascular remodelling in schistosomiasis.

Leprosy is an infectious and contagious spectral disease accompanied by a series of immunological events triggered by the host response to the aetiologic agent, Mycobacterium leprae . The induction and maintenance of the immune/inflammatory response in leprosy are linked to multiple cell interactions and soluble factors, primarily through the action of cytokines. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the serum levels of tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α and its soluble receptors (sTNF-R1 and sTNF-R2) in leprosy patients at different stages of multidrug treatment (MDT) in comparison with non-infected individuals and to determine their role as putative biomarkers of the severity of leprosy or the treatment response. ELISA was used to measure the levels of these molecules in 30 healthy controls and 37 leprosy patients at the time of diagnosis and during and after MDT. Our results showed increases in the serum levels of TNF-α and sTNF-R2 in infected individuals in comparison with controls. The levels of TNF-α, but not sTNF-R2, decreased with treatment. The current results corroborate previous reports of elevated serum levels of TNF-α in leprosy and suggest a role for sTNF-R2 in the control of this cytokine during MDT.

Energy flows from land to sea and between pelagic and benthic environments have the potential to increase the connectivity between estuaries and adjacent ecosystems as well as among estuarine habitats. To identify such energy flows and the main trophic pathways of energy transfer in the Minho River estuary, we investigated the spatial and temporal fluctuations of carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios in benthic (and their potential food sources) and epibenthic consumers. Sampling was conducted along the estuarine salinity gradient from winter to summer of 2011. We found that the carbon (δ13C = 13C/12C) and nitrogen (δ15N = 15N/14N) stable isotope ratios of the most abundant benthic and epibenthic consumers varied along the salinity gradient. The δ13C values increased seaward, whereas the opposite pattern was found for the δ15N, especially during the summer. The stable isotope ratios revealed two trophic pathways in the Minho estuary food web. The first pathway is supported by phytoplankton and represented by filter feeders such as zooplankton and some deposit feeders, particularly amphipods and polychaetes. The second pathway is supported by detritus and composed essentially of deposit feeders, which by being consumed, allow detritus to be incorporated into higher trophic levels. Spatial and temporal feeding variations in the estuarine benthic food web are driven by hydrology and proximity to adjacent ecosystems (terrestrial, marine). During high river discharge periods, the δ13CPOC (ca. -28‰) and C: NPOM (>10) values suggested an increase of terrestrial-derived OM to the particulate OM pool, which was then used by suspension feeders. During low river discharge periods, marine intrusion increased upriver, which was reflected in benthic consumers' 13C-enriched stable isotope values. No relationship was found between food quality (phytoplankton vs. detritus) and food chain length because the lowest and highest values were associated with freshwater and saltmarsh areas, respectively, both dominated by the detrital pathway. This study demonstrates that benthic consumers enhance the connectivity between estuaries and its adjacent ecosystems by utilizing subsidies of terrestrial and marine origin and that benthic-pelagic coupling is an important energy transfer mechanism to the benthic food web.

Bee Pollen is a valuable and useful natural food product that can be used for different purposes, among which medical ones. This matrix is deemed a superfood because of its chemical composition, which is rich in nutrients and possesses significant bioactivities, including antioxidant and microbiological properties. Nevertheless, the storage conditions and processing methods must be optimized to maintain their properties and maximise their application. This work investigates the best bee pollen conservation process and its impact on individual constituents. Monofloral bee pollen was analysed for 30 and 60 days after three different storage processes (drying, pasteurization, and high-pressure pasteurization). The results showed a decrease mainly in fatty acid and amino acid content for the dried samples. The best results were obtained with high-pressure pasteurization, maintaining the proteins, amino acids and lipids characteristics of pollen and the lowest microbial contamination.

Climate change is causing mean sea surface temperatures (SST) to increase worldwide. However, this increase has not been temporally or spatially uniform, with variations observed depending both on the period considered and the geographic region. In this context, this paper aims to quantify relevant changes in SST along the Western Iberian Coast over the last four decades, through the calculation of trends and anomalies of long-term time series of in situ observations and satellite-derived data. Potential drivers of SST changes were considered using atmospheric and teleconnections time series. Changes in the seasonal cycle of SST were also evaluated. We show that SST has increased since 1982, with regional variations between 0.10 and 0.25 °C per decade, with an increase in air temperature appearing to drive the SST trends along the Iberian coast. In the near-shore area, no significant trends or changes in the seasonal cycle of SST were observed, which is likely due to a buffer effect caused by the seasonal upwelling that characterizes the region. Recent decades show a slowdown in the increase rate of SST along the Western Iberian Coast. An upwelling intensification could justify this observation, along with the effect of teleconnections on the regional climate, such as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the Western Mediterranean Oscillation Index (WeMOI). Our results suggest that the WeMOI plays a more important role in coastal SST variability than the other teleconnections. The present study quantifies regional changes in SST and enhances knowledge of the role of ocean-atmosphere interactions in regulating climate and weather conditions. Moreover, it provides a relevant scientific context to the development of regional adaptative and mitigation actions in response to climate change.

The Acacia genus is considered one of the most invasive taxa in some habitats, namely coastal dunes, maritime calcareous soils, fresh lands in the valleys, mountainous areas, and the banks of watercourses and roadsides. In Portugal, the severity risk is very high, so this study aimed to evaluate the nutritional and mineral contents of the green pods as a potential source for livestock feeds and soil fertilizer because, as far as we know, there is no use for this species. The seven different species of Acacia (Acacia mearnsii Link, Acacia longifolia (Andrews) Willd, Acacia melanoxylon R. Br., Acacia pycnantha Bentham, Acacia dealbata Link., Acacia retinodes Schlecht, and Acacia cyclops A. Cunn. ex G. Don fil) were evaluated. The results showed that Acacia green pods have a high protein, fibre and minerals content, especially in potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg). All species present a different profile of the studied parameters, suggesting different potentials for their future use. Near-infrared spectroscopy was a potential tool to predict the earlier quality of the Acacia green pods to better select the raw material for the different applications.

Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent as a result of climate change, and the increasing frequency of these events may lead to significant changes in fish assemblages. In this sense, this work aimed to study the effects of climate change and extreme weather events on fish assemblages in the Rio Minho estuary (Portugal). Between 2010 and 2019, continuous weekly sampling with fyke nets was carried out to assess the dynamics of fish assemblages in the estuary. In addition, temperature and precipitation data were obtained from satellite information to assess the relationship between climatic variables and fish composition, structure, and diversity. Fish populations changed significantly over time, becoming less diverse and largely dominated by a few, mostly invasive species (e.g., carp, goldfish, pumpkinseed, and tench), while the abundance of most native species declined over the years (e.g., panjorca, stickleback, and shad). High temperatures and low precipitation negatively affected native species, while the invasive species benefited from increased temperatures and extreme weather events (droughts and floods).

Due to non-linear interactions, the effects of contaminant mixtures on aquatic ecosystems are difficult to assess, especially under temperature rise that will likely exacerbate the complexity of the responses. Yet, under the current climatic crisis, assessing the effects of water contaminants and temperature is paramount to understanding the biological impacts of mixtures of stressors on aquatic ecosystems. Here, we use an ecosystem model followed by global sensitivity analysis (GSA) to prioritize the effects of four single emerging contaminants (ECs) and their mixture, combined with two temperature rise scenarios, on the biomass production of a NE Atlantic estuary. Scenarios ran for 10 years with a time-step of 0.1 days. The results indicate that macroinvertebrate biomass was significantly explained by the effect of each single EC and by their mixture but not by temperature. Globally, the most adverse effects were induced by two ECs and by the mixture of the four ECs, although the sensitivity of macroinvertebrates to the tested scenarios differed. Overall, the present approach is useful to prioritize the effects of stressors and assess the sensitivity of the different trophic groups within food webs, which may be of relevance to support decision making linked to the sustainable management of estuaries and other aquatic systems.
