RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Type II diabetes mellitus causes metabolic changes that may lead to early menopause and worsen climacteric symptoms. OBJECTIVES: To determine the risk factors for type II diabetes mellitus and assess the impact of this disease on the age of menopause and on climacteric symptoms. METHODS: A total of 6079 women aged between 40 and 59 years from 11 Latin American countries were requested to answer the Menopause Rating Scale and Goldberg Anxiety-Depression Scale. RESULTS: The prevalence of diabetes was 6.7%. Diabetes mellitus was associated with arterial hypertension (odds ratio (OR) 4.49; 95% confidence interval (CI) 3.47-5.31), the use of psychotropic drugs (OR 1.54; 95% CI 1.22-1.94), hormonal therapy (OR 1.46; 95% CI 1.11-1.92), ≥ 50 years of age (OR 1.48; 95% CI 1.17-1.86), overweight or obese (OR 1.47; 95% CI 1.15-1.89), and waist circumference ≥ 88 cm (OR 1.32; 95% CI 1.06-1.65). Factors associated with lower risk of diabetes were the use of hormonal contraceptives (OR 0.55; 95% CI 0.35-0.87), alcohol (OR 0.73; 95% CI 0.54-0.98) and living in cities > 2500 meters above sea level (OR 0.70; 95% CI 0.53-0.91) or with high temperatures (OR 0.67; 95% CI 0.51-0.88). In turn, diabetes tripled the risk of menopause in women under 45 years of age. Diabetes did not increase the risk of deterioration of quality of life due to climacteric symptoms. CONCLUSION: Menopause does not increase the risk of type II diabetes mellitus. Diabetes is associated with early menopause in women under 45 years of age.

BACKGROUND: Estimation of survival requires follow-up of patients from diagnosis until death ensuring complete and good quality data. Many population-based cancer registries in low- and middle-income countries have difficulties linking registry data with regional or national vital statistics, increasing the chances of cases lost to follow-up. The impact of lost to follow-up cases on survival estimates from small population-based cancer registries (<500 cases) has been understudied, and bias could be larger than in larger registries. METHODS: We simulated scenarios based on idealized real data from three population-based cancer registries to assess the impact of loss to follow-up on 1-5-year overall and net survival for stomach, colon, and thyroid cancers-cancer types with very different prognosis. Multiple scenarios with varying of lost to follow-up proportions (1-20%) and sample sizes of (100-500 cases) were carried out. We investigated the impact of excluding versus censoring lost to follow-up cases; punctual and bootstrap confidence intervals for the average bias are presented. RESULTS: Censoring of lost to follow-up cases lead to overestimation of the overall survival, this effect was strongest for cancers with a poor prognosis and increased with follow-up time and higher proportion of lost to follow-up cases; these effects were slightly larger for net survival than overall survival. Excluding cases lost to follow-up did not generate a bias on survival estimates on average, but in individual cases, there were under- and overestimating survival. For gastric, colon, and thyroid cancer, relative bias on 5-year cancer survival with 1% of lost to follow-up varied between 6% and 125%, 2% and 40%, and 0.1% and 1.0%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Estimation of cancer survival from small population-based registries must be interpreted with caution: even small proportions of censoring, or excluding lost to follow-up cases can inflate survival, making it hard to interpret comparison across regions or countries.

We have compared the levels of DNA methyltransferases from rat liver and spleen in both sexes following a single injection of N-2-acetylaminofluorene (AAF). Enzyme extracts from treated animals were obtained at different intervals (2-34 days) after treatment. The extracts were assayed in the presence of chicken erythrocyte DNA and S-adenosyl-L-[Me-3H]methionine. A 55% increase in male rat-liver methyltransferase activity measured by Me-3H incorporation into DNA occurred on day 14. By contrast, female methyltransferase after a similar period revealed a 33% decrease in activity. Between days 21 and 34, there is a progressive return to normal methyltransferase levels. Spleen-derived enzyme studied between days 7 and 14, showed a decrease in methylating activity in both sexes. After replacing corn seed oil by ethanol as the vehicle for AAF injection, we observed a change in liver methyltransferase 48 h after injection. Quantification of radioactive eluates in m5C fractions together with the increase in the integrated area identified as m5C in HPLC chromatograms allowed positive identification of methylated products.

1. A group of plant proteinases is present mainly in the unripe fruit of the papaya tree (Carica papaya), which is a member of the genus Carica. C. candamarcensis is another species that belongs to this group. Its latex contains several proteinases displaying high proteolytic activity. 2. We used several electrophoretic techniques to compare the protein composition of the latex from the two species. Acid electrophoresis followed by staining or Western blot revealed a total of 17 proteins in C. candamarcensis and 7 proteins in C. papaya. Some of the proteins observed in C. papaya have been previously reported in the literature. 3. Electrophoresis on denaturing gels, followed by staining or Western blot revealed the presence of 14 proteins in C. candamarcensis and 6 proteins in C. papaya. Non-equilibrium isoelectrofocusing of the latex from both species showed a larger array of proteins in C. candamarcensis. The analysis of esterase and proteolytic activities on gel fractions after electrophoresis revealed the presence of distinct areas presenting enzyme activity. Some proteins detected in C. candamarcensis have different mobilities when compared with proteins from C. papaya. 4. These results support the view that latex from C. candamarcensis contains a wider diversity of proteins compared to C. papaya, and that some of the proteins not in C. papaya present esterase and proteolytic activity.

RESUMO

In this preliminary report the results of PCR for detection of DNA sequences (65 KDa antigen) of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in CSF samples from 20 patients are registered. In 10 patients there were clinical and laboratory findings suggesting the diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis (test group). In the other 10 patients, clinical and laboratory findings suggested meningitis or meningo-encephalitis from other etiologies (control group). In 7 patients from the test group antigenic DNA sequences of Mycobacterium tuberculosis were found in CSF by PCR; positive results were not registered in the control group.

RESUMO

Nesse relato preliminar säo registrados os resultados da pesquisa de PCR para detecçäo de sequências de DNA (antígeno 65 KDa) do Mycobacteruium tuberculosis no LCR. Foram estudadas amostras de LCR de 20 pacientes: em 10 havia suspeita clínica e laboratorial de neurotuberculose (grupo de teste); nos outros 10 havia suspeita diagnóstica de meningite ou menigoencefalite de outras etiologias ( grupo controle). Em 7 dos 10 pacientes do primeiro grupo a pesquisa de sequências antigênicas de DNA do Mycobacterium tuberculosis por PCR foi positiva; em nenhum dos pacientes do grupo controle a pesquisa foi positiva

RESUMO

La osteocondromatosis sinovial es una entidad rara que se localiza en el tejido sinovial de las articulaciones, las bolsas y vainas tendinosas. El concepto normalmente aceptado en el trabajo para considerar este padecimiento es la metaplasia directa de las celulas subsinoviales en cartilago. Reexaminando las preparaciones microscopicas se informa acerca de 23 casos captados en 16 anos. Los mas interesantes fueron localizados en la rodilla, con lesiones magnas cuya evolucion resulto cronica hasta su deteccion por incapacidad.Todos los casos fueron tratados mediante extirpacion quirurgica, y hubo dos recidivas
