RESUMO

A hypercaloric fatty diet predisposes an individual to metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular complications. Sirtuin1 (SIRT1) belongs to the class III histone deacetylase family and sustains anabolism, mitochondrial biogenesis, and fat distribution. Epididymal white adipose tissue (eWAT) is involved in inflammation, whilst interscapular brown adipose tissue (iBAT) drives metabolism in obese rodents. Melatonin, a pineal indoleamine, acting as a SIRT1 modulator, may alleviate cardiometabolic damage. In the present study, we morphologically characterized the heart, eWAT, and iBAT in male heterozygous SIRT1+/- mice (HET mice) on a high-fat diet (60%E lard) versus a standard rodent diet (8.5% E fat) and drinking melatonin (10 mg/kg) for 16 weeks. Wild-type (WT) male C57Bl6/J mice were similarly fed for comparison. Cardiomyocyte fibrosis and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response worsened in HET mice on a high-fat diet vs. other groups. Lipid peroxidation, ER, and mitochondrial stress were assessed by 4 hydroxy-2-nonenal (4HNE), glucose-regulated protein78 (GRP78), CCAA/enhancer-binding protein homologous protein (CHOP), heat shock protein 60 (HSP60), and mitofusin2 immunostainings. Ultrastructural analysis indicated the prevalence of atypical inter-myofibrillar mitochondria with short, misaligned cristae in HET mice on a lard diet despite melatonin supplementation. Abnormal eWAT adipocytes, crown-like inflammatory structures, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), and iBAT whitening characterized HET mice on a hypercaloric fatty diet and were maintained after melatonin supply. All these data suggest that melatonin's mechanism of action is strictly linked to full SIRT1 expression, which is required for the exhibition of effective antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Three-dimensional (3D) pair-matching has brought about an innovative approach for the analysis of commingled skeletal remains, and it has been tested on bone models acquired through CT and laser scans. Here, 3D models of 40 innominate bones (20 left and 20 right) of 20 documented male individuals from a cemeterial skeletal collection were acquired through a stereophotogrammetric device (VECTRA M3, Canfield Scientific, Inc.). The ventral iliac surface was chosen as the anatomical region of interest (ROI) for the analysis. Each left ROI was mirrored and superimposed on the matching right ROI (contralateral element from the same individual) and mismatching ROIs (contralateral elements from different individuals). The point-to-point distance between models was calculated through the Vectra Analysis Module (VAM) software and the root mean square (RMS) point-to-point distance value was used to evaluate the sorting performance of the method, in terms of sensitivity and specificity rates. Differences in RMS between matches and mismatches were investigated through a Student's t test (p < 0.05). The state of preservation of the remains was assessed following an index of anatomical completeness and differences in RMS distances of true matches according to different anatomical completeness were assessed through the Mann-Whitney test (p < 0.05). RMS point-to-point distances of matches and mismatches were significantly different (p < 0.01), being the matches lower than mismatches. The RMS threshold of 2.9 mm identified all the true pairs; the test was 100% sensitive and 51% specific. The RMS of matches with a better state of preservation are significantly lower than the less preserved matches (p < 0.05). In general, a low RMS distance value may indicate a true match, being it to be further verified. The 3D approach for sorting innominate bones provides a valid screening test that could complete subjective and osteometric methods with numerical evidence of the match. Preliminary data suggest a possible relation between RMS distance values and taphonomic condition, which would benefit from further research.

Autophagy dysregulation is commonplace in the pathogenesis of several invalidating diseases, such as musculoskeletal diseases. Polyamines, as spermidine and spermine, are small aliphatic cations essential for cell growth and differentiation, with multiple antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic effects. Remarkably, they are emerging as natural autophagy regulators with strong anti-aging effects. Polyamine levels were significantly altered in the skeletal muscles of aged animals. Therefore, supplementation of spermine and spermidine may be important to prevent or treat muscle atrophy. Recent in vitro and in vivo experimental studies indicate that spermidine reverses dysfunctional autophagy and stimulates mitophagy in muscles and heart, preventing senescence. Physical exercise, as polyamines, regulates skeletal muscle mass inducing proper autophagy and mitophagy. This narrative review focuses on the latest evidence regarding the efficacy of polyamines and exercise as autophagy inducers, alone or coupled, in alleviating sarcopenia and aging-dependent musculoskeletal diseases. A comprehensive description of overall autophagic steps in muscle, polyamine metabolic pathways, and effects of the role of autophagy inducers played by both polyamines and exercise has been presented. Although literature shows few data in regard to this controversial topic, interesting effects on muscle atrophy in murine models have emerged when the two "autophagy-inducers" were combined. We hope these findings, with caution, can encourage researchers to continue investigating in this direction. In particular, if these novel insights could be confirmed in further in vivo and clinical studies, and the two synergic treatments could be optimized in terms of dose and duration, then polyamine supplementation and physical exercise might have a clinical potential in sarcopenia, and more importantly, implications for a healthy lifestyle in the elderly population.

A correct assessment on the position, path, and direction of fracture lines is crucial when the sequence of different injuries on the skull has to be ascertained. In this context, the so-called Puppe's rule on intersecting fracture lines has always been considered a cornerstone of such an investigation. However, there is one factor that has never been previously considered: how do fracture lines behave when they reach the edges of an old and remodeled hole from a previous craniotomy? Two peculiar cases are presented of subjects undergoing cranial fractures due to blunt force trauma (case 1) and gunshot (case 2). Both previously underwent neurosurgical operations with persistence of the burr holes produced by the craniotomy drill (15 and 20 years before death). What was arguable, according to Puppe's rule, was that the fracture lines, when at the edge of the craniotomy hole, stopped. However, what has been detected was different than what expected: fracture lines continued exactly in the opposite direction, as though they were "skipping" the hole, following the same direction and the same axis and stopping a few centimeters over on the opposite side of the craniotomy hole. Puppe's rule has never been refuted, but these cases are the closest to an exception ever seen in forensic anthropology.

Human decomposition in sea water poses several challenges to forensic practitioners tasked with the analysis of drowned bodies. Postmortem changes in the marine environment have not been extensively investigated and the current literature is mainly based on bodies retrieved from shallow waters or on limited samples. On 18 April 2015, a fishing boat carrying allegedly 1,000 migrants sank in the Mediterranean Sea. In a fifteen-month time span, humanitarian missions were carried out to recover the bodies from the sea. The present study investigates postmortem changes on the drowned victims in a non-sequestered environment in the Mediterranean Sea. A retrospective study was performed by two observers on the autopsy photographic records in the series of bodies recovered from the open sea. For 184 bodies, the postmortem changes were evaluated according to facial, body, limb, and total aquatic decomposition score (FADS, BADS, LADS, TADS, respectively). Furthermore, a modification to the current scoring system that divides upper and lower limbs was suggested. The interobserver agreement was assessed using Krippendorff's alpha coefficient. Possible relations between the decomposition scores and PMSI were investigated with Pearson correlation analysis. According to the sequence of the recovery missions, increasing FADS, BADS, LADS, and TADS were observed. The modified scoring system showed a strong agreement between observers, allowing a more accurate description of the actual extent of decomposition. The scores showed a significant relation with the PMSI (p < 0.01). Prolonged submersion in the open marine environment was confirmed to show increasing decomposition rates, from moderate decay to full disarticulation. This study provides a descriptive unicum of the postmortem changes in the open sea, which may contribute to strengthen the discipline and aid description of bodies recovered in similar circumstances, especially if a body needs to be associated to a disaster or period with respect to another, thus facilitating families or authorities in the search for specific victims.

INTRODUCTION: The actual role of landmarks labeling before three-dimensional (3D) facial acquisition is still debated. In this study, several measurements were compared among textured labeled (TL), unlabeled (NL), and untextured (NTL) 3D facial models. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The face of 50 subjects was acquired through stereophotogrammetry. Landmark coordinates were extracted from TL, NL, and NTL facial models, and 33 linear and angular measurements were calculated, together with surface area and volume. Accuracy of measurements among TL, NL, and NTL models was assessed through calculation of relative technical error of measurement (rTEM). The intra- and inter-observer errors for each type of facial model were calculated. RESULTS: Intra- and inter-observer error of measurements increased passing from textured to NTL and NL 3D models. Average rTEMs between TL models, and NTL and NL models were 4.5 ±â€Š2.6% and 4.7 ±â€Š2.8%, respectively, almost all measurements being classified as "very good" or "good." Only for orbital height and its inclination, mandibular ramus length, nasal convexity, alar slope angle, and facial divergence, rTEM was classified as "moderate" or "poor." CONCLUSIONS: Accuracy and precision of measurements decrease when landmarks are not previously labeled; attention must be taken when measurements have a low magnitude or involve landmarks requiring palpation.

Andersen-Tawil syndrome (ATS) is a rare potassium channelopathy causing periodic paralysis, cardiac arrhythmias, and dysmorphic features. A detailed analysis of the face could facilitate diagnosis of ATS, as approximately 30% of patients do not show variants in KCNJ2 gene, and diagnosis is established by clinical findings. We aimed to characterize the face in ATS through a quantitative approach, as facial anomalies may be unnoticed on visual inspection. Facial images of 12 subjects with genetically confirmed ATS (six males, six females, age 5-67 years) were acquired through stereophotogrammetry. Using 38 soft-tissue landmarks, linear distances, angles, and ratios were calculated and expressed as z-score values, with reference to 477 healthy subjects matched for sex and age. All patients showed decreased lower facial height with shortening of philtrum (mean z-score ± SD: -1.5 ± 0.9), smaller mid and lower facial depths (-1.9 ± 0.7; -2.3 ± 0.9), short palpebral fissures (right -1.2 ± 0.4; left -1.6 ± 0.6), smaller mandibular ramus length (-2.1 ± 0.4), and increased nasal width/length ratio (1.4 ± 0.5) with smaller nostril axis length (right -1.8 ± 0.8, left -1.6 ± 0.7). Hypertelorism and low-set ears were detected in two-thirds of patients. The study quantified facial dysmorphysm in ATS, extending information about known features, and detecting unrecorded philtrum and nostril characteristics, which may be distinctive traits of the disorder.

The estimation of the post-traumatic survival time (PTST) in case of bone injuries remains a tricky issue in the forensic field, especially when dealing with dry bones. Newer high-resolution imaging, and in particular microcomputed tomography (micro-CT), has the potential to significantly improve our abilities to interpret antemortem and perimortem lesions and accurately date fractures in a less destructive analysis. In this paper, nine costal fractures of known post-traumatic ages were analyzed through gross examination, conventional radiography, and microcomputed tomography, in order to test the potential of microcomputed tomography for dating fractures. As a result, microcomputed tomography provided images of high quality and definition and allowed the observation of the internal microarchitecture of the fractures and calluses. While microcomputed tomography cannot substitute histological examination for the estimation of the post-traumatic survival time, it constitutes a potent and helpful complementary tool for the analysis of bone trauma.

It is commonly accepted that crime scene recovery and recording are key moments of any judicial inspection in which investigators must decide on the correct strategies to put into place. Complex outdoor scenarios, presenting partially or entirely skeletonised remains, can benefit more than others by the intervention of environmental specialists (forensic anthropologists, archaeologists, entomologists and botanists). These experts are capable of singling out, correctly recording and recovering environmental evidence that can lead to a more comprehensive reconstruction of a given criminal episode. If human remains are discovered in an outdoor scenario, the on-site presence of a botanist will guarantee a correct approach to the identification, recording and recovery of any botanical evidence. If an on-site botanist is not available, the operators must be capable of both the botanical evaluation of a scene and the implementation of correct botanical sampling protocols.The following collection of unusual case histories that aim at underlining the efficacy of forensic botany will examine the determination of post mortem or the post depositional interval, evidence for a victim's post mortem transfer, evidence for the identification of a primary crime scene and evidence for the identification of a victim's dismemberment site. In another two cases, one, we will illustrate the important role that forensic botany played in the discrimination between botanical material used to voluntarily conceal a victim and vegetation that had grown naturally above a disposal site, whereas the other will highlight the protocols implemented for the identification of a murder weapon.

Bone taphonomy is a widely investigated topic; however, few data are available concerning marine bone taphonomy, especially on remains recovered from great depths and with short post-mortem intervals. To date, few studies have evaluated the bony changes which occur in seawater compared to samples with different post-mortem histories, and none through a comparative analysis of different approaches. To this purpose, this pilot study aims to examine the influence of seawater on bone preservation compared to other depositional contexts by multiple perspectives. Forty-nine human bone samples (femurs or tibiae) recovered from different environments (sea water, fresh water, outdoor, burial in coffin) were compared by macroscopic, microscopic and bone densitometric approaches. In order to investigate organic and inorganic components, undecalcified and decalcified histology of thin sections was performed. The analyses revealed a well-preserved bone tissue both macroscopically (92%) and microscopically (97% and 95% for undecalcified and decalcified sections). No significant differences were detected from radiological densitometric investigations (BMD = 1.6 g/cm2 ± 0.1), except between old and young individuals (p value < 0.001). Differences were observed for body decomposition and few scavenged samples (3/15). However, even if slight variations were observed, no relation was recorded with the depositional contexts. We found a similar bone preservation in the four environments at the time of recovery, both macroscopically and microscopically, but also with radiological densitometric investigations. Our observations enriched the literature on bone taphonomy, providing data on bone tissue preservation in the early post-mortem period from a multidisciplinary perspective, paving the way for further studies on the topic.

Aicardi syndrome (AIC) is a rare congenital neurodevelopmental disorder of unknown etiology, that affects almost exclusively females, originally characterized by corpus callosum agenesis, chorioretinal lacunae, and infantile spasms. The current diagnostic criteria also include qualitative facial features (prominent premaxilla, upturned nasal tip, decreased nasal bridge angle, sparse lateral eyebrows, and microphthalmia) that still need quantification. A three-dimensional (3D) photogrammetric assessment of 11 Italian females, age 7-32 years, who satisfied AIC criteria, was performed. Linear distances and angles were computed from soft-tissue facial landmarks coordinates. The z-score values were calculated using data of 850 healthy reference females matched for age and compared by Mann-Whitney test (p < .01). Patients showed a shorter philtrum and right side orbital height (mean z-scores: -1.7, -0.9), shorter superior, middle, and inferior facial depths (mean z-scores: -1.3, -2.2, -2.3), and a smaller length of mandibular ramus (mean z-score: -2.1); conversely, they showed larger nasal and lower facial widths, and lower facial convexity (mean z-scores: 1.7, 1.4, 2.4). The inclinations of the orbit versus the true horizontal were increased bilaterally (mean z-scores: 1.8, 1.1). Some common facial abnormalities were quantified in AIC patients using a noninvasive instrument. They may help clinicians in performing a definite AIC diagnosis in atypical or doubt cases.

PURPOSE: Vidian neurectomy is a surgical procedure applied to different pathological conditions, including chronic rhinitis and sphenopalatine neuralgia. The choice of the correct surgical approach depends upon the possible protrusion of Vidian nerve into the sphenoid sinuses. The present study analyzes the possible relationship between protrusion of Vidian nerve and volume of sphenoid sinuses. METHODS: In total, 320 maxillofacial CT-scans were retrospectively assessed. Subjects equally divided among males and females (age range 18-94 years) were divided into three groups according to the profile of Vidian nerve protrusion: type 1: Vidian nerve inside the sphenoid corpus; type 2: partially protruding into the sphenoid sinus; and type 3: entirely protruding into the sphenoid sinus through a stalk. Volume of sphenoid sinuses was extracted through the ITK-SNAP-free software and automatically calculated. Possible statistically significant differences in prevalence of the three types between males and females were assessed through Chi-squared test (p < 0.05). Differences in volume of sphenoid sinuses in subjects included within the three types were assessed through one-way ANOVA test (p < 0.05), separately for males and females. RESULTS: Type 2 was the most prevalent (46.5%), followed by type 1 (38.8%) and type 3 (14.7%), without significant differences according to sex (p > 0.05). Volume significantly increased passing from type 1 to type 3 both in males (p < 0.01) and in females (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The results prove the existence of a strict relationship between sphenoid sinuses pneumatization and protrusion of the Vidian canal and give a contribution to the knowledge of this important anatomical variant in endoscopic surgery.

Diabetes mellitus is a condition with severe and life-threatening complications and epidemic proportions worldwide. The study of diabetes on bones can provide crucial information to the forensic practice, the archeological field and medical research. In this paper, the authors report and discuss the lesions observed on the skeletons of 38 individuals (plus 11 negative control samples) of the CAL Milano Cemetery Skeletal Collection with known diabetes. As a result, different types of lesions were highlighted in the feet: periosteal new bone formation, lysis of tuft, lytic lesions, evidence of trauma, osteomyelitis, and osteochondritis dissecans. In 50% of the skeletons of the study sample, lesions were located on bones of the first ray of the foot. Vascular calcifications were also collected and considered. None of these lesions is pathognomonic of diabetes and each implies a broad differential diagnosis that can be confronted with the upper and axial lesions. However, they are coherent with the disease development and complications. This study is the first to document skeletons with known diabetes from an identified collection and discuss their diagnostic potential.

In recent years, several studies have focused on species discrimination of bone fragments by histological analysis. According to literature, the most consistent distinguishing features are Haversian canal and Haversian system areas. Nonetheless, there is a consistent overlap between human and non-human secondary osteon dimensions. One of the features that have never been analyzed for the purpose of species discrimination is the osteocyte lacuna, a small oblong cavity in which the osteocyte is locked in. The aim of this study is to verify whether there are significant quantitative differences between human and pig lacunae within secondary osteons with similar areas. Study sample comprises the midshaft of long bones (humerus, radius, ulna, femur, tibia, and fibula) of a medieval human adult and a juvenile pig. Sixty-eight secondary osteons with similar areas have been selected for each species and a total of 1224 osteocyte lacunae have been measured. For each osteon, the total number of lacunae was counted, and the following measurements were taken: minimum and maximum diameter, area, perimeter, and circularity of nine lacunae divided between inner, intermediate, and outer lacunae. Statistical analysis showed minimal differences between human and pig in the number of lacunae per osteons and in the minimum diameter (P > 0.05). On the contrary, a significant difference (P < 0.001) has been observed in the maximum diameter, perimeter, area, and circularity. Although there is the need for further research on different species and larger sample, these results highlighted the potential for the use of osteocyte lacunae as an additional parameter for species discrimination. Concerning the difference between the dimensions of osteocyte lacunae based on their position within the osteon (inner, intermediate, and outer lacunae), results showed that their size decreases from the cement line towards the Haversian canal both in human and pig.

Sphenoid sinuses are considered the most variable structures of human body: therefore, they may be used for personal identification, through the application of 3D segmentation procedures. This study aims at proposing a new protocol for personal identification based on 3D-3D superimposition of sphenoid sinuses segmented from head CT scans. Adult subjects (equally divided among males and females) who underwent two head CT scans were extracted from a hospital database. Sphenoid sinuses were segmented through ITK-SNAP software and the corresponding 3D models were automatically superimposed to obtain 40 matches (when they belonged to the same person) and 260 mismatches (when they were extracted from different individuals). The RMS (root mean square) point-to-point distance was then calculated for all the superimpositions: differences according to sex and group (matches and mismatches) were assessed through the Mann-Whitney test (p < 0.05). On average, the RMS value was almost ten times smaller in matches (0.22 ± 0.11 mm) than in mismatches (2.16 ± 0.57 mm) with a statistically significant difference according to group (p < 0.05), but not to sex (p > 0.05). The study proposed a new method for assessing personal identification from segmented 3D models of sphenoid sinuses, useful in the forensic contexts where other methods might not be implementable or successful.

Anatomical uniqueness plays a significant role in the personal identification process of unknown deceased. Frontal sinuses have been widely used in the past decades for this purpose, mostly using 2D X-ray techniques. However, the modern 3D CT-based segmentation methods may help in developing novel and more reliable methods of identification. This study aims at assessing the anatomical uniqueness of frontal sinuses through the 3D model registration. Thirty subjects who underwent two maxillofacial CT scans (interval: 1 month to 5 years) were selected from a hospital database. Frontal sinuses were automatically segmented through ITK-SNAP open source software and the 3D models belonging to the same patient were automatically superimposed according to the least point-to-point difference between the two surfaces. Two hundred patients were randomly selected from the same database and undergo the same procedure to perform 200 superimpositions of frontal sinuses belonging to different individuals, equally divided between males and females (mismatches). Statistically significant differences of average root mean square (RMS) point-to-point distance between the group of matches and mismatches, as well as possible differences according to sex, were assessed through Mann-Whitney U test (p < 0.05). In the group of matches, RMS ranged between 0.07 and 0.96 mm (mean RMS 0.35 ± 0.23 mm), while in the group of mismatches, it ranged between 0.96 and 10.29 mm (mean RMS 2.59 ± 1.79 mm), with a statistically significant difference (p < 0.0001). Neither the matches nor the mismatches group showed statistically significant differences according to sex. This study proposes a novel 3D approach for the assessment of anatomical uniqueness of frontal sinuses, providing both morphological and quantitative analysis, and a new method of identification based on 3D assessment of frontal sinuses, applicable when ante-mortem CT scans are available.

Several researchers have analyzed the collocation of infraorbital foramen, but no study has so far considered the possible influence of cranial size.Three measurements (distances from anterior nasal spine, inferior orbital rim, angle at the intersection between the line from anterior nasal spine and the transversal plane parallel to the Frankfurt plane) were taken on 100 skulls belonging to a contemporary skeletal collection. In addition, maximum cranial length, maximum cranial breadth, cranial height, and bizygomatic breadth were measured, together with 2 indices (horizontal cephalic index and Giardina Y-index). Differences according to sex and side were assessed through 2-way analysis of variance test (P <0.05). Measurements showing statistically significant differences according to sex were further assessed through 1-way analysis of covariance test including cranial measurements and indices as covariates (P <0.05).Statistically significant differences according to sex and side were found respectively for the distance from anterior nasal spine and the angle at infraorbital foramen (P <0.05). One-way analysis of covariance test verified that the sexual dimorphism of infraorbital foramen- anterior nasal spine distance was independent from the general measurements of cranium.The present study first proved that sexually dimorphic parameters useful for the localization of infraorbital foramen do not depend upon the cranium size.

PURPOSE: Anatomy of sphenoid sinuses has acquired a growing importance with the diffusion of transsphenoidal surgical procedures. A common risk in these practices is the damage of internal carotid artery (ICA) and optic nerve (ON), which may protrude into the sphenoid air cavities. This study aims at analysing the relationships between sphenoid sinuses volume and protrusion of ICA and ON. METHODS: 260 head CT-scans were retrospectively analysed (equally divided among males and females, age range 20-92 years). Volume was segmented through ITK-SNAP software. In addition, the subjects were classified into four groups: no protrusion of any structure (group 1), protrusion of ICA (group 2), protrusion of ON (group 3), protrusion of both ICA and ON (group 4). Possible statistically significant differences in prevalence of the four groups according to gender were assessed through Chi-squared test (p < 0.05). Differences in volume between the four groups were assessed through one-way ANOVA test (p < 0.05), separately for males and females. RESULTS: Group 1 was the most frequent (40.0%), followed by group 4 (27.7%) and group 2 (18.5%), without any difference according to gender. For what concerns volume, cases of ICA and concomitant ICA + ON protrusion had significantly larger sinuses, whereas isolated ON protrusion did not modify sinus volume. CONCLUSIONS: Results show that protrusion of ICA is positively related with the volume of sphenoid sinuses, whereas the same relation was not verified for ON: surgeons should accurately consider possible ON protrusion in each case, as it may occur independently from sphenoid sinuses volume.

PURPOSE: The pterygopalatine fossa is an important anatomical structure for several surgical and anaesthesiologic procedures; yet, very few data are available about its size. This study aims at providing a metrical assessment of pterygopalatine fossa through an innovative 3D segmentation procedure on head CT-scans. METHODS: CT-scans from 100 patients (50 males and 50 females) aged between 18 and 85 years were chosen for the study. Right and left pterygopalatine fossae were segmented through ITK-SNAP open source software. Height and volume were calculated on the acquired 3D models. In addition, anterior-posterior nasal spine distance, upper facial height (nasion-prosthion) and biorbital breadth (ectoconchion-ectoconchion) were measured as well. Statistically significant differences of height and volume according to sex and side were assessed through two-way ANOVA test: sexually dimorphic measurements were further assessed through one-way ANCOVA test using the three cranial measurements as covariates (p < 0.05). RESULTS: On average pterygopalatine fossa height was 24.1 ± 3.5 mm in males, and 22.8 ± 3.4 mm in females, whereas volume was 0.930 ± 0.181 cm3 in males and 0.817 ± 0.157 cm3 in females, with statistically significant differences according to sex (p < 0.05), but not to side (p > 0.05); interaction was negligible for both the measurements. ANCOVA test verified that sexual dimorphism of both measurements is independent from general cranial size (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The present study highlighted the sexual dimorphism of pterygopalatine fossa: results may improve the knowledge of this anatomical structure difficult to explore, but crucial in several fields of clinics and surgery.

One of the fundamental questions in forensic medicine and anthropology is whether or not a bone or bone fragment is human. Surprisingly at times for the extreme degradation of the bone (charred, old), DNA cannot be successfully performed and one must turn to other methods. Histological analysis at times can be proposed. However, the variability of a single human skeleton has never been tested. Forty-nine thin sections of long, flat, irregular and short bones were obtained from a well-preserved medieval adult human skeleton. A qualitative histomorphological analysis was performed in order to assess the presence of primary and secondary bone and the presence, absence and orientation of vascular canals. No histological sections exhibited woven or fibro-lamellar bone. Long bones showed a higher variability with an alternation within the same section of areas characterized by tightly packed secondary osteons and areas with scattered secondary osteons immersed in a lamellar matrix. Flat and irregular bones appeared to be characterized by a greater uniformity with scattered osteons in abundant interstitial lamellae. Some cases of "osteon banding" and "drifting osteons" were observed. Although Haversian bone represent the most frequent pattern, a histomorphological variability between different bones of the same individual, in different portions of the same bone, and in different parts of the same section has been observed. Therefore, the present study has highlighted the importance of extending research to whole skeletons without focusing only on single bones, in order to have a better understanding of the histological variability of both human and non-human bone.
