BACKGROUND AND AIMS: It has been described that recompensation can improve prognosis in patients with cirrhosis. However, recompensation after transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) has not been studied. We evaluated the impact of recompensation after TIPS on the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and death, and we compared it with compensated cirrhosis patients. METHODS: An observational study of consecutive patients with cirrhosis undergoing TIPS between 2008 and 2022 was performed. Baveno VII definition of recompensation was used including patients with or without diuretics/Hepatic encephalopathy prophylaxis. A prospective cohort of consecutive compensated cirrhosis patients was used for comparison. RESULTS: Overall, 208 patients with cirrhosis were included, 92 compensated and 116 decompensated who underwent TIPS. After 1 year, 24% achieved recompensation. Liver function (MELD 12 ± 5 vs. 15 ± 6; p = .049), LDL-cholesterol (97 mg/dL vs. 76 mg/dL, p = .018), white cell count (7.96 × 109/dL vs. 6.24 × 109/dL, p = .039) and platelets (129 × 109/dL vs. 101 × 109/dL, p = .039) were associated with recompensation. Recompensation was associated with a reduction in the risk of HCC (p = .020). Multivariable analysis showed that this risk was significantly higher in non-recompensated patients (p = .003) but no differences were observed in recompensated compared with compensated patients (p = .816). Similarly, decompensated patients presented lower survival rates (p = .011), while no differences were observed between recompensated and compensated patients (p = .677). CONCLUSIONS: Recompensation after TIPS has a clear impact on the incidence of HCC and death, with a similar prognosis than patients with compensated cirrhosis. Liver function is associated with recompensation, suggesting the importance of considering early TIPS in patients with indication.

BACKGROUND: Arterial trauma of the axillary subclavian segment carries considerable morbidity and mortality risks. Surgical approaches are challenging given the hidden trajectory of these vessels which has made the endovascular approach a valid -and potentially better- alternative for managing these injuries. We describe the incidence of relevant outcomes for patients with traumatic axillary and/or subclavian artery injury who underwent endovascular therapy at a tertiary care-university hospital over a 15-year period in Cali, Colombia. METHODS: We conducted an incidence study based on clinical records that included patients aged 15 years or older with traumatic axillary subclavian arterial injury treated with endovascular therapy between 2008 and 2022. Vascular injuries caused by intra-arterial dialysis catheter insertion (iatrogenic) were excluded. We described clinical and imaging characteristics upon admission, perioperative findings, and the incidence of complications and in-hospital mortality, with accompanying 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS: We included 32 patients, 93.8% of whom were male, with a median (IQR) age of 30 (21-42) years. The type of trauma was penetrating in 75% of patients (62.5% corresponding to gunshot wounds) and blunt in 25%. Upon admission, 12 patients (37.5%) exhibited hard signs of vascular injury, and 20 patients (62.5%) exhibited soft signs. Fourteen patients (47%) had an Injury Severity Score (ISS) greater than 15 and 12 (37.5%) had hemodynamic instability. All but three patients (90.6%) suffered subclavian artery injury (right 48.3%, left 51.7%), while 12.9% had axillary artery injury (one patient with both vessels affected). Intraoperative complications happened in one patient (3.1%, 95%CI: 0.2%-18%). Pseudoaneurysms were identified in 11 patients (34.4%), thrombosis in 6 (18.8%), and dissection in 6 (18.8%). Three (9.4%) patients required hybrid management (endovascular therapy following conventional surgery). No cases of ischemia or amputation occurred. The length of hospital stay was 6 (3, 11.5) days. No cases of in-hospital mortality were reported (0%, 95% CI: 0.0-13.4%). CONCLUSION: Endovascular treatment in trauma is a minimally invasive technique with favorable clinical outcomes in patients with arterial trauma in the axillary-subclavian segment. This should be a viable therapeutic option for selected cases.

Polyamines are small polycationic amines that are widespread in living organisms. Thermospermine, synthesized by thermospermine synthase ACAULIS5 (ACL5), was recently shown to be an endogenous plant polyamine. Thermospermine is critical for proper vascular development and xylem cell specification, but it is not known how thermospermine homeostasis is controlled in the xylem. We present data in the Populus model system supporting the existence of a negative feedback control of thermospermine levels in stem xylem tissues, the main site of thermospermine biosynthesis. While over-expression of the ACL5 homologue in Populus, POPACAULIS5, resulted in strong up-regulation of ACL5 expression and thermospermine accumulation in leaves, the corresponding levels in the secondary xylem tissues of the stem were similar or lower than those in the wild-type. POPACAULIS5 over-expression had a negative effect on accumulation of indole-3-acetic acid, while exogenous auxin had a positive effect on POPACAULIS5 expression, thus promoting thermospermine accumulation. Further, over-expression of POPACAULIS5 negatively affected expression of the class III homeodomain leucine zipper (HD-Zip III) transcription factor gene PttHB8, a homologue of AtHB8, while up-regulation of PttHB8 positively affected POPACAULIS5 expression. These results indicate that excessive accumulation of thermospermine is prevented by a negative feedback control of POPACAULIS5 transcript levels through suppression of indole-3-acetic acid levels, and that PttHB8 is involved in the control of POPACAULIS5 expression. We propose that this negative feedback loop functions to maintain steady-state levels of thermospermine, which is required for proper xylem development, and that it is dependent on the presence of high concentrations of endogenous indole-3-acetic acid, such as those present in the secondary xylem tissues.

Background: Surgical excision biopsy remains the only reliable option in most cases of indeterminate pulmonary nodules, particularly in cancer survivors for whom surgery provides local control of pulmonary metastasis and the best chance of cure for early-stage lung cancer. Nevertheless, unnecessary surgeries remain a concern and the prognosis of newly diagnosed lung cancer might be influenced by the history of previous malignancy. We aimed to analyze the outcomes of resected indeterminate pulmonary nodules in patients with and without previous malignancy, and the impact of prior cancer history on survival and recurrence in stage I non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. Methods: We retrospectively studied 176 resected indeterminate pulmonary nodules from 169 patients (58% with and 42% without previous cancer). Recurrence and overall survival (OS) were analyzed in newly diagnosed stage I NSCLC using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazard models. Results: The rate of benign lesions was 15.3% (9.6% in the previous cancer group and 23.6% in the no previous cancer group). In stage I NSCLC patients (n=86), previous malignancy was associated with recurrence (P<0.001) but not OS (P=0.23). Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and visceral pleural invasion were associated with impaired OS and recurrence. Mediastinal lymph node removal was associated with better OS. Conclusions: The rate of benign resections among indeterminate pulmonary nodules in the no-previous cancer group more than doubled that of the previous cancer group and, in newly diagnosed stage I NSCLC patients, recurrence was independently associated with prior cancer. Therefore, in this setting, a history of previous malignancy should be taken into consideration when identifying patients at risk of tumor recurrence.

SARS-CoV-2 respiratory infection is still under study today, mainly because of its long-term effects. This study aims to analyse health status and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in survivors of coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) who have developed pulmonary sequelae. Prospective observational study of patients diagnosed with COVID-19 pneumonia between February and May 2020. Reviews were conducted at 3 and 12 months after hospital discharge. HRQoL was assessed by administration of the SF-36 questionnaire and data related to medical records and physical examination were also collected. In addition, chest X-ray, computed tomography and pulmonary function test were included as additional tests. 305 patients were admitted for COVID-19 pneumonia of which 130 (42.6%) completed follow-up. The mean age of the enrolled group was 55.9 ± 15.9 years. The most prevalent persistent symptoms were dyspnea (37.3%) and asthenia (36.9%). Pulmonary sequelae were detected in 20.8% of participants. The most frequent alteration was ground ground glass opacities (GGO) (88.9%), with mild extension. Fibrotic changes were found in only 2% of cases. When comparing the two groups, at 3 and 12 months of evolution, lower scores in the vitality (VT) and mental health (MH) domains were found only in the group without sequelae. Days of hospitalisation and Charlson index acted as influential factors on HRQoL. Minimal or mild pulmonary sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 do not cause further deterioration of HRQoL. Repeated medical care and pulmonary rehabilitation are effective tools to improve HRQoL.

This work investigated the roles of the tetraamine thermospermine (TSpm) by analysing its contribution to Arabidopsis basal defence against the biotrophic bacterium Pseudomonas viridiflava. The participation of polyamine oxidases (PAOs) in TSpm homeostasis and TSpm-mediated defence was also investigated. Exogenous supply of TSpm, as well as ectopic expression of the TSpm biosynthetic gene ACL5, increased Arabidopsis Col-0 resistance to P. viridiflava, while null acl5 mutants were less resistant than Col-0 plants. The above-mentioned increase in resistance was blocked by the PAO inhibitor SL-11061, thus demonstrating the participation of TSpm oxidation. Analysis of PAO genes expression in transgenic 35S::ACL5 and Col-0 plants supplied with TSpm suggests that PAO 1, 3, and 5 are the main PAOs involved in TSpm catabolism. In summary, TSpm exhibited the potential to perform defensive functions previously reported for its structural isomer Spm, and the relevance of these findings is discussed in the context of ACL5 expression and TSpm concentration in planta. Moreover, this work demonstrates that manipulation of TSpm metabolism modifies plant resistance to pathogens.

BACKGROUND: Telehealth has emerged as an alternative to conventional, face-to-face visits, and the COVID pandemic has hastened its introduction. Telephone appointments make use of an easy-to-use and accessible technology. AIM: To investigate the usability of telephone-based telehealth in a women's health outpatient clinic and whether this may be affected by the severity of the COVID pandemic. METHOD: A telephone survey was prepared to explore two usability domains: interaction quality (4 items) and satisfaction, preference and future use (6 items). Women were selected from two periods during the COVID pandemic when the infection rates were high and low. RESULTS: The survey was completed by 106 women (60 when the prevalence of COVID was high, mean age 53.58 years, and 46 when it was low, mean age 48.59 years) out of the 153 women who had a telephone appointment. The severity of the COVID pandemic showed an effect on responses. Women were less enthusiastic about using the telephone during the period of low COVID prevalence, as shown by lower scores on 3 of the 4 items of the first domain [I had enough time; I would have understood better in person; I would have expressed myself better in person (p < 0.001 for comparison between groups on each of the 3 items)], and on 4 of the 6 items in the second domain [satisfied with quality of care (p < 0.001), or with the information received (p = 0.018); use of telephone in future (p < 0.001); preference to try other technologies in future (p < 0.001)]. Overall, women expressed a preference for in-person visits regardless of COVID prevalence rates. CONCLUSION: Telephone calls were a feasible alternative to face-to-face visits in a women's health outpatient clinic, but the pandemic pressure modified usability parameters. Respondents preferred in-person visits at any pandemic stage.

BACKGROUND: Concern has risen about the effects of COVID-19 in interstitial lung disease (ILD) patients. The aim of our study was to determine clinical characteristics and prognostic factors of ILD patients admitted for COVID-19. METHODS: Ancillary analysis of an international, multicenter COVID-19 registry (HOPE: Health Outcome Predictive Evaluation) was performed. The subgroup of ILD patients was selected and compared with the rest of the cohort. RESULTS: A total of 114 patients with ILDs were evaluated. Mean ± SD age was 72.4 ± 13.6 years, and 65.8% were men. ILD patients were older, had more comorbidities, received more home oxygen therapy and more frequently had respiratory failure upon admission than non-ILD patients (all p < 0.05). In laboratory findings, ILD patients more frequently had elevated LDH, C-reactive protein, and D-dimer levels (all p < 0.05). A multivariate analysis showed that chronic kidney disease and respiratory insufficiency on admission were predictors of ventilatory support, and that older age, kidney disease and elevated LDH were predictors of death. CONCLUSIONS: Our data show that ILD patients admitted for COVID-19 are older, have more comorbidities, more frequently require ventilatory support and have higher mortality than those without ILDs. Older age, kidney disease and LDH were independent predictors of mortality in this population.

The role of the tetraamine spermine in plant defense against pathogens was investigated by using the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana)-Pseudomonas viridiflava pathosystem. The effects of perturbations of plant spermine levels on susceptibility to bacterial infection were evaluated in transgenic plants (35S::spermine synthase [SPMS]) that overexpressed the SPMS gene and accumulated spermine, as well as in spms mutants with low spermine levels. The former exhibited higher resistance to P. viridiflava than wild-type plants, while the latter were more susceptible. Exogenous supply of spermine to wild-type plants also increased disease resistance. Increased resistance provided by spermine was partly counteracted by the polyamine oxidase inhibitor SL-11061, demonstrating that the protective effect of spermine partly depends on its oxidation. In addition, global changes in gene expression resulting from perturbations of spermine levels were analyzed by transcript profiling 35S::SPMS-9 and spms-2 plants. Overexpression of 602 genes was detected in 35S::SPMS-9 plants, while 312 genes were down-regulated, as compared to the wild type. In the spms-2 line, 211 and 158 genes were up- and down-regulated, respectively. Analysis of gene ontology term enrichment demonstrated that many genes overexpressed only in 35S::SPMS-9 participate in pathogen perception and defense responses. Notably, several families of disease resistance genes, transcription factors, kinases, and nucleotide- and DNA/RNA-binding proteins were overexpressed in this line. Thus, a number of spermine-responsive genes potentially involved in resistance to P. viridiflava were identified. The obtained results support the idea that spermine contributes to plant resistance to P. viridiflava.

BACKGROUND: Ovule lifespan is an important factor in determining the ability to set fruits and produce seeds. Once ovule senescence is established, fruit set capacity in response to gibberellins (GAs) is lost. We aimed to elucidate whether ethylene plays a role in controlling ovule senescence and the fruit set response in Arabidopsis. RESULTS: Ethylene response inhibitors, silver thiosulphate (STS) and 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), were able to delay the loss of pistil response to GA(3). In addition, ethylene insensitive mutants ein2-5 and ein3-1 showed delayed loss of pistil response, as in plants treated with STS and 1-MCP, while constitutive mutant ctr1-1 displayed premature loss of response. The analysis of the expression of ethylene biosynthesis genes suggests that ethylene is synthesised in ovules at the onset of ovule senescence, while a transcriptional meta-analysis also supports an activated ethylene-dependent senescence upon the establishment of ovule senescence. Finally, a SAG12:GUS reporter line proved useful to monitor ovule senescence and to directly demonstrate that ethylene specifically modulates ovule senescence. CONCLUSIONS: We have shown that ethylene is involved in both the control of the ovule lifespan and the determination of the pistil/fruit fate. Our data support a role of the ovule in modulating the GA response during fruit set in Arabidopsis. A possible mechanism that links the ethylene modulation of the ovule senescence and the GA3-induced fruit set response is discussed.

The pistil is the specialized plant organ that enables appropriate pollination and ovule fertilization, after which it undergoes growth and differentiation to become a fruit. However, in most species, if ovules are not fertilized around anthesis the pistil irreversibly loses its growth capacity. We used physiological, molecular, and transcriptomic tools to characterize the post-anthesis development of the unfertilized Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) pistil. Surprisingly, developmental processes that have been previously described in developing Arabidopsis fruits, such as the collapse of the adaxial epidermis, differentiation of a sclerenchyma layer in the adaxial subepidermis and the dehiscence zone, and valve dehiscence, were also observed in the unfertilized pistil. We determined that senescence is first established in the transmitting tract, stigma, and ovules immediately after anthesis, and that the timing of senescence in the stigma and ovules correlates with the loss of fruit-set responsiveness of the pistil to pollen and the hormone gibberellin (GA), respectively. Moreover, we showed that mutants with altered ovule development have impaired fruit-set response to the GA gibberellic acid, which further indicates that the presence of viable ovules is required for fruit-set responsiveness to GAs in the unfertilized pistil. Our data suggest that a fertilization-independent developmental program controls many of the processes during post-anthesis development, both in unfertilized pistils and seeded fruits, and point to a key role of the ovule in the capacity of pistils to undergo fruit set in response to GA.

INTRODUCTION: The main complication of placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) is massive bleeding. Endoarterial occlusion techniques have been incorporated into the management of this pathology. Our aim was to examine the endovascular practice patterns among PAS patients treated during a 9-year period in a low-middle income country in which an interdisciplinary group's technical skills were improved with the creation of a PAS team. METHODOLOGY: A retrospective cohort study including all PAS patients treated from December 2011 to November 2020 was performed. We compared the clinical results obtained according to the type of endovascular device used (group 1, internal iliac artery occlusion balloons; group 2, resuscitative endovascular balloons of the aorta; group 3, no arterial balloons due to low risk of bleeding) and according to the year in which they were attended (reflects the PAS team level of experience). A fourth group of comparisons included the woman diagnosed during a cesarean delivery and treated in a nonprotocolized way. RESULTS: A total of 113 patients were included. The amount of blood loss decreased annually, with a median of 2,500 mL in 2014 (when endovascular occlusion balloons were used in all patients) and 1,394 mL in 2020 (when only 38.5% of the patients required arterial balloons). Group 3 patients (n = 16) had the lowest bleeding volume (1,245 mL) and operative time (173 minutes) of the entire population studied. Group 2 patients (n = 46) had a bleeding volume (mean, 1,700 mL) and transfusions frequency (34.8%) slightly lower than group 1 patients (n = 30) (mean of 2,000 mL and 50%, respectively). They also had lower hysterectomy frequency (63% vs. 76.7% in group 1) and surgical time (205 minutes vs. 275 in group 1) despite a similar frequency of confirmed PAS and S2 compromise. CONCLUSION: Endovascular techniques used for bleeding control in PAS patients are less necessary as interdisciplinary groups improve their surgical and teamwork skills. Diverticulitis and hemorrhoidal proctitis in the population are significant public health problems. We studied the potential association between the intake of certain plant foods and diverticulitis or hemorrhoidal episodes through a case-control study including 410 cases and 401 controls. We used a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. The intake was additionally quantified according to a 24 h recall. The plant foods or derived food products were categorized by their main chemical components into ethanol, caffeine/theine/theobromine, capsaicin, alliin, acids, eugenol, and miscellaneous foods such as curcumin. The mean score for overall intake of plant foods under consideration was 6.3 points, and this was significantly higher in cases (8.5) than in controls (4.1). Overall intake was similar in cases presenting with diverticulitis or hemorrhoidal proctitis. Cases had 13 times the odds of being in the upper quartile for overall intake (>7 points), compared to controls. Explanatory logistic regression models showed that the strongest association with diverticulitis and hemorrhoidal proctitis was shown by the chemical food group of capsaicin, followed by ethanol, eugenol, caffeine/theine/theobromine, and acids. Neither alliin nor miscellaneous food groups showed any association. High, frequent consumption of capsaicin, followed by ethanol, eugenol, caffeine/theine/theobromine, and acids increase the risk of diverticulitis and hemorrhoidal proctitis.

Plant floral transition is a major developmental switch regulated by an integrated network of pathways. Arabidopsis FLOWERING LOCUS K (FLK), a protein with three KH RNA-binding domains, operates in the autonomous flowering-promotive pathway by decreasing the transcript levels of the key flowering repressor FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC). Here we report that PEPPER (PEP), an FLK paralog previously shown to affect vegetative and pistil development, antagonizes FLK by positively regulating FLC. Lack of PEP function rescues the flk late-flowering phenotype with a concomitant decrease in FLC RNA levels. Loss of HUA2, another FLC activator encoding an RNA-binding protein, further rescues flk, being flk hua2 pep triple mutants virtually wild-type regarding flowering time. Consistently, PEP overexpression determines high levels of FLC transcripts and flowering delay. Genetic and molecular analyses indicate that FLK and PEP act independently of FCA, another important FLC repressor in the autonomous pathway. In addition, we present data suggesting that PEP may affect FLC expression at both transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. Overall, our results uncover PEP as a new factor for FLC upregulation, underscoring the importance of RNA-binding activities during developmental timing of flowering.

Fruit development is usually triggered by ovule fertilization, and it requires coordination between seed development and the growth and differentiation of the ovary to host the seeds. Hormones are known to synchronize these two processes, but the role of each hormone, and the mechanism by which they interact, are still unknown. Here we show that auxin and gibberellins (GAs) act in a hierarchical scheme. The synthetic reporter construct DR5:GFP showed that fertilization triggered an increase in auxin response in the ovules, which could be mimicked by blocking polar auxin transport. As the application of GAs did not affect auxin response, the most likely sequence of events after fertilization involves auxin-mediated activation of GA synthesis. We have confirmed this, and have shown that GA biosynthesis upon fertilization is localized specifically in the fertilized ovules. Furthermore, auxin treatment caused changes in the expression of GA biosynthetic genes similar to those triggered by fertilization, and also restricted to the ovules. Finally, GA signaling was activated in ovules and valves, as shown by the rapid downregulation of the fusion protein RGA-GFP after pollination and auxin treatment. Taken together, this evidence suggests a model in which fertilization would trigger an auxin-mediated promotion of GA synthesis specifically in the ovule. The GAs synthesized in the ovules would be then transported to the valves to promote GA signaling and thus coordinate growth of the silique.

Polyamines have been attributed a general role in fruit development in several plants like pea and tomato. To investigate the involvement of these compounds in parthenocarpic fruit development in Citrus clementina, we have isolated three genes encoding aminopropyl transferases in this species: CcSPDS, CcSPM1 and CcACL5. The unambiguous identity of the proteins encoded by these genes was confirmed by phylogenetic analysis and by heterologous expression in yeast mutants deficient in aminopropyl transferase activity. The expression of these genes in C. clementina is not restricted to ovaries and fruits, but it is also detectable all throughout the plant. More importantly, gibberellin-induced parthenocarpic fruit set caused a decrease in CcSPDS expression in ovaries, paralleled by a decrease in spermidine; while the expression of CcSPM1 and CcACL5 was basically unaffected, resulting in the maintenance of spermine concentration during early fruit development. In addition, the variation in putrescine content was paralleled by changes in the expression of one of the two putative CcODC paralogs.

Classical methods for the determination of polyamines in Arabidopsis, based on high-performance liquid chromatography or thin-layer chromatography, do not distinguish between aliphatic tetraamines or do not allow accurate quantitation, respectively. Here we describe a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method that allows separation and simple quantitation of spermine and thermospermine. The reliability of the protocol has been confirmed using extracts of Arabidopsis mutants impaired in tetraamine biosynthesis. The levels of thermospermine are around 6-fold lower than those of spermine in Arabidopsis seedlings. Interestingly, hormonal effects on polyamine levels are not always correlated with those of transcripts of their biosynthetic enzymes.

RESUMO

The genus Hyalomma belongs to the Ixodidae family and includes many tick species. Most species in this genus are African species, but two of them, Hyalomma lusitanicum and Hyalomma marginatum, are also found in Europe and, owing to their morphological similarity, it is very difficult to tell them apart. This is a major concern because their phenology and vector capacities are quite different. Moreover, they share many habitats and both are currently spreading to new areas, probably due to climate change and animal/human movements. In this study, we review the described ecology of the two species and provide further interesting data on H. lusitanicum based on the authors' experience, which could be useful in assessing the risk they pose to humans and animals.

Polyamine biosynthesis is an ancient metabolic pathway present in all organisms. Aminopropyltransferases are key enzymes that mediate the synthesis of spermidine, spermine, and thermospermine. The relatively high sequence similarity between aminopropyltransferases and their similarity with putrescine N-methyltransferases (PMT) raises the question of whether they share a common ancestor or have evolved by convergence. Here we show that aminopropyltransferases and PMT are phylogenetically interconnected, and the different activities have been generated by unusually frequent events of diversification of existing functions. Although all spermidine synthases (SPDSs) derive from a common ancestor preceding the separation between prokaryotes and eukaryotes, they have been the origin of a variety of new activities. Among those, spermine synthases (SPMSs) represent a novelty independently arisen at least 3 times, in animals, fungi, and plants. The most parsimonious mechanism would involve the duplication and change of function of preexisting SPDS genes in each phylum. Although spermine is not essential for life, the repeated invention of SPMS and its conservation strongly argues for an evolutionary advantage derived from its presence. Moreover, the appearance of thermospermine synthase (tSPMS) in several genera of Archaea and Bacteria was accompanied by a loss of SPDS, suggesting that the new activity originated as a change of function of this enzyme. Surprisingly, tSPMS was later acquired by plants at an early stage of evolution by horizontal gene transfer and has proven to be essential for vascular development in tracheophytes. Finally, the synthesis of nicotine and tropane alkaloids in Solanales was favored by the origination of a new activity, PMT, as a duplication and change of function from SPDS.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown an increase in the prevalence of silicosis due to the use of artificial quartz aggregates (AQA). The aim of this study was to assess the cases of silicosis in our area reported to the Healthcare Information System for Occupational Epidemiological Surveillance of the Autonomous Community of Valencia to detect new agents of exposure to silica and working conditions that promote its onset. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A descriptive study was conducted of cases of silicosis reported to the Healthcare Information System for Occupational Epidemiological Surveillance of the Autonomous Community of Valencia from January 2009 to September 2016. The data sources include epidemiological-occupational surveys and medical reports. RESULTS: Nineteen cases of silicosis were reported, 74% of which were diagnosed using high-resolution computed tomography. Some 68.4% of the cases were related to the handling of AQA, as assemblers/cutters/sanders of countertops. The subgroup's mean age was 46.62±13.33 years, and the mean exposure was 11.00±3.58 years. The rest of the patients worked in companies with no AQA exposure, with a mean age of 62.33±16.22 years and a mean exposure of 27.16±8.44 years (P<.05). Four cases presented complicated forms (3 exposed to AQA). CONCLUSIONS: The work of assembling/cutting/sanding AQA countertops presents a high risk of developing the disease. The mean age at onset and the exposure time for this group is lower, and the percentage of complicated clinical forms is higher. Improvements need to be made in preventive planning for companies with exposure to these new agents.
