ABSTRACTObjectives: The aim of this study was thus to evaluate the effect of Cr supplementation on morphological changes and expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the hippocampus and on developmental parameters. Methods: Male Wistar rat pups were submitted to an experimental model of CP. Cr was administered via gavage from the 21st to the 28th postnatal day, and in water after the 28th, until the end of the experiment. Body weight (BW), food consumption (FC), muscle strength, and locomotion were evaluated. Expression of interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) were assessed in the hippocampus by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Iba1 immunoreactivity was assessed by immunocytochemistry in the hippocampal hilus. Results: Experimental CP caused increased density and activation of microglial cells, and overexpression of IL-6. The rats with CP also presented abnormal BW development and impairment of strength and locomotion. Cr supplementation was able to reverse the overexpression of IL-6 in the hippocampus and mitigate the impairments observed in BW, strength, and locomotion. Discussion: Future studies should evaluate other neurobiological characteristics, including changes in neural precursor cells and other cytokines, both pro- and anti-inflammatory.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to assess the effect of neonatal treatment with kaempferol on neuromotor development, proliferation of neural precursor cells, the microglia profile, and antioxidant enzyme gene expression in the hippocampus. METHODS: A rat model of cerebral palsy was established using perinatal anoxia and sensorimotor restriction of hindlimbs during infancy. Kaempferol (1 mg/ kg) was intraperitoneally administered during the neonatal period. RESULTS: Neonatal treatment with kaempferol reduces the impact of the cerebral palsy model on reflex ontogeny and on the maturation of physical features. Impairment of locomotor activity development and motor coordination was found to be attenuated by kaempferol treatment during the neonatal period in rats exposed to cerebral palsy. Neonatal treatment of kaempferol in cerebral palsy rats prevents a substantial reduction in the number of neural precursor cells in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus, an activated microglia profile, and increased proliferation of microglia in the sub-granular zone and in the granular cell layer. Neonatal treatment with kaempferol increases gene expression of superoxide dismutase and catalase in the hippocampus of rats submitted to the cerebral palsy model. DISCUSSION: Kaempferol attenuates the impact of cerebral palsy on neuromotor behavior development, preventing altered hippocampal microglia activation and mitigating impaired cell proliferation in a neurogenic niche in these rats. Neonatal treatment with kaempferol also increases antioxidant defense gene expression in the hippocampus of rats submitted to the cerebral palsy model.

OBJECTIVES: The present study aims to evaluate the impact of early exposure to brain injury and malnutrition on episodic memory and behavior. METHODS: For this, a systematic review was carried out in the Medline/Pubmed, Web of Science, Scopus, and LILACS databases with no year or language restrictions. RESULTS: Initially, 1759 studies were detected. After screening, 53 studies remained to be read in full. The meta-analysis demonstrated that exposure to double insults worsens episodic recognition memory but does not affect spatial memory. Early exposure to low-protein diets has been demonstrated to aggravate locomotor and masticatory sequelae. Furthermore, it reduces the weight of the soleus muscle and the muscle fibers of the masseter and digastric muscles. Early exposure to high-fat diets promotes an increase in oxidative stress and inflammation in the brain, increasing anxiety- and depression-like behavior and reducing locomotion. DISCUSSION: Epigenetic modifications were noted in the hippocampus, hypothalamus, and prefrontal cortex depending on the type of dietetic exposure in early life. These findings demonstrate the impact of the double insult on regions involved in cognitive and behavioral processes. Additional studies are essential to understand the real impact of the double insults in the critical period.

Because male and female effects on fertility must be considered, it may be difficult to achieve accurate and repeatable fertility predictions using only sperm characteristics given differences in breed, health, and season. Improving sperm quality after cryopreservation may be a method to reduce the male effect on the fertility outcome. This study was conducted using 2 different Certified Semen Service approved extenders, one containing plant-derived antioxidants, to assess cryopreserved sperm quality and determine pregnancy per artificial insemination (P/AI) in a commercial dairy farm. Beef bull ejaculates (n = 24 ejaculates, n = 4 bulls) were split and frozen in egg-yolk-TRIS (EYT) or GameteGuard-FB cryopreservation extenders. Frozen-thawed sperm was evaluated for sperm quality and used for insemination in dairy cows (n = 4856). There was an improvement in total and progressive motility, acrosome integrity, and reduction of DNA fragmentation at 0 and 3 h after thawing in sperm frozen in GameteGuard-FB when compared with the EYT extender. An overall 12.7% improvement in pregnancy per AI (P/AI) was observed when GameteGuard-FB (40.8%) was used for cryopreservation when compared with EYT (36.2%). More importantly, GameteGuard-FB frozen semen increased P/AI for first service by 19.5% (35.9% EYT and 42.9% GameteGuard-FB) and 45.0% was also observed at third service (31.3% EYT and 45.4% GameteGuard-FB). The use of GameteGuard-FB resulted in an average 40% P/AI among bulls. Taken together, the increase in cryopreserved sperm quality using GameteGuard-FB can be used to minimize the male effects on pregnancy outcomes in commercial dairy farms.

INTRODUCTION: MicroRNAs (miRs) regulate vascular calcification (VC), and their quantification may contribute to suspicion of the presence of VC. METHODS: The study was performed in four phases. Phase 1: miRs sequencing of rat calcified and non-calcified aortas. Phase 2: miRs with the highest rate of change, plus miR-145 [the most abundant miR in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs)], were validated in aortas and serum from rats with and without VC. Phase 3: the selected miRs were analyzed in epigastric arteries from kidney donors and recipients, and serum samples from general population. Phase 4: VSMCs were exposed to different phosphorus concentrations, and miR-145 and miR-486 were overexpressed to investigate their role in VC. RESULTS: miR-145, miR-122-5p, miR-486 and miR-598-3p decreased in the rat calcified aortas, but only miR-145 and miR-486 were detected in serum. In human epigastric arteries, miR-145 and miR-486 were lower in kidney transplant recipients compared with donors. Both miRs inversely correlated with arterial calcium content and with VC (Kauppila index). In the general population, the severe VC was associated with the lowest serum levels of both miRs. The receiver operating characteristic curve showed that serum miR-145 was a good biomarker of VC. In VSMCs exposed to high phosphorus, calcium content, osteogenic markers (Runx2 and Osterix) increased, and the contractile marker (α-actin), miR-145 and miR-486 decreased. Overexpression of miR-145, and to a lesser extent miR-486, prevented the increase in calcium content induced by high phosphorus, the osteogenic differentiation and the loss of the contractile phenotype. CONCLUSION: miR-145 and miR-486 regulate the osteogenic differentiation of VSMCs, and their quantification in serum could serve as a marker of VC.

Brain oxygen deprivation causes morphological damage involved in the formation of serious pathological conditions such as stroke and cerebral palsy. Therapeutic methods for post-hypoxia/anoxia injuries are limited and still have deficiencies in terms of safety and efficacy. Recently, clinical studies of stroke have reported the use of drugs containing riboflavin for post-injury clinical rehabilitation, however, the effects of vitamin B2 on exposure to cerebral oxygen deprivation are not completely elucidated. This review aimed to investigate the potential antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects of riboflavin in cerebral hypoxia/anoxia. After a systematic search, 21 articles were selected, 8 preclinical and 12 clinical studies, and 1 translational study. Most preclinical studies used B2 alone in models of hypoxia in rodents, with doses of 1-20 mg/kg (in vivo) and 0.5-5 µM (in vitro). Together, these works suggested greater regulation of lipid peroxidation and apoptosis and an increase in neurotrophins, locomotion, and cognition after treatment. In contrast, several human studies have administered riboflavin (5 mg) in combination with other Krebs cycle metabolites, except one study, which used only B2 (20 mg). A reduction in lactic acidosis and recovery of sensorimotor functions was observed in children after treatment with B2, while adults and the elderly showed a reduction in infarct volume and cognitive rehabilitation. Based on findings from preclinical and clinical studies, we conclude that the use of riboflavin alone or in combination acts beneficially in correcting the underlying brain damage caused by hypoxia/anoxia and its inflammatory, oxidative, and behavioral impairments.

BACKGROUND: Obesity results from an unbalance in the ingested and burned calories. Energy balance (EB) is critically regulated by the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (ARC) by promoting appetite or anorectic actions. Hypothalamic inflammation, driven by high activation of the microglia, has been reported as a key mechanism involved in the development of diet-induced obesity. Kaempferol (KF), a flavonoid-type polyphenol present in a large number of fruits and vegetables, was shown to regulate both energy metabolism and inflammation. OBJECTIVES: In this work, we studied the effects of both the central and peripheral treatment with KF on hypothalamic inflammation and EB regulation in mice with obesity. METHODS: Obese adult mice were chronically (40 days) treated with KF (0.5 mg/kg/day, intraperitoneally). During the treatment, body weight, food intake (FI), feed efficiency (FE), glucose tolerance, and insulin sensitivity were determined. Analysis of microglia activation in the ARC of the hypothalamus at the end of the treatment was also performed. Body weight, FI, and FE changes were also evaluated in response to 5µg KF, centrally administrated. RESULTS: Chronic administration of KF decreased ∼43% of the density, and ∼30% of the ratio, of activated microglia in the arcuate nucleus. These changes were accompanied by body weight loss, decreased FE, reduced fasting blood glucose, and a tendency to improve insulin sensitivity. Finally, acute central administration of KF reproduced the effects on EB triggered by peripheral administration. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that KF might fight obesity by regulating central processes related to EB regulation and hypothalamic inflammation.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is characterized by motor disorders, including deficits in locomotor activity, coordination, and balance. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors have been shown to play an important role in brain plasticity. This study investigates the effect of neonatal treatment using fluoxetine on locomotor activity and histomorphometric parameters of the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) in rats submitted to an experimental model of CP. CP was found to reduce bodyweight and locomotion parameters and also to increase the glia/neuron index in the S1. Administration of fluoxetine 10 mg/kg reduced bodyweight, impaired locomotor activity parameters, and increased the number of glial cells and the glia/neuron ratio in the S1 in rats with CP. However, treatment with fluoxetine 5 mg/kg was not found to be associated with adverse effects on locomotor activity and seems to improve histomorphometric parameters by way of minor changes in the S1 in animals with CP. These results thus indicate that experimental CP, in combination with the use of a high dose of fluoxetine (10 mg/kg), impairs locomotor and histomorphometric parameters in the S1, while treatment with a low dose of fluoxetine (5 mg/kg) averts the negative outcomes associated with a high dose of fluoxetine in relation to these parameters but produces no protective effect.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are chronic respiratory diseases that remain uncontrolled in many patients, despite the wide range of therapeutic options available. This review analyzes the available clinical evidence on 3 budesonide/formoterol DPI devices, Spiromax®, Turbuhaler®, and Easyhaler®, in terms of patient-reported outcomes (PROs), inhaler errors, and asthma and COPD control. RECENT FINDINGS: The effectiveness of dry powder inhalers (DPI) depends largely on the device and the patient's inhaler technique. Equally important are the patient's perception of the inhaler and adherence. Given the high burden of these diseases, it is important that efforts be made to select the best DPI for each patient and to analyze the impact of these variables to help improve the health and quality of life of our patients. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the present knowledge about PROs, inhaler handling errors, and asthma and COPD control achieved by Spiromax®, Turbuhaler®, and Easyhaler®.

AIMS: This study assessed, at the physiological and molecular levels, the effect of biogas on indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) biosynthesis by Azospirillum brasilense as well as the impact of this bacterium during CO2 fixation from biogas by Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus obliquus. METHODS AND RESULTS: IpdC gene expression, IAA production and the growth of A. brasilense cultured under air (control) and biogas (treatment) were evaluated. The results demonstrated that A. brasilense had a better growth capacity and IAA production (105.7 ± 10.3 µg ml-1 ) when cultured under biogas composed of 25% CO2  + 75% methane (CH4 ) with respect to the control (72.4 ± 7.9 µg ml-1 ), although the ipdC gene expression level was low under the stressful condition generated by biogas. Moreover, this bacterium was able to induce a higher cell density and CO2 fixation rate from biogas by C. vulgaris (0.27 ± 0.08 g l-1 d-1 ) and S. obliquus (0.22 ± 0.08 g l-1 d-1 ). CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that A. brasilense has the capacity to grow and actively maintain its main microalgal growth-promoting mechanism when cultured under biogas and positively influence CO2 fixation from the biogas of C. vulgaris and S. obliquus. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: These findings broaden research in the field of Azospirillum-microalga interactions and the prevalence of Azospirillum in environmental and ecological topics in addition to supporting the uses of plant growth-promoting bacteria to enhance biotechnological strategies for biogas upgrading.

AIMS: The purpose of this study was to characterize the prokaryotic community and putative microbial interactions between H2 -producing bacteria (HPB) and non-HPB using two anaerobic sequencing batch biofilm reactors (AnSBBRs) fed with tequila vinasses in co-digestion with acid hydrolysates of Agave tequilana var. azul bagasse (ATAB). METHODS AND RESULTS: Two AnSBBRs were operated for H2 production to correlate changes in physicochemical and biological variables by principal component analysis (PCA). Results indicated that H2 yield was supported by Ethanoligenens harbinense and Clostridium tyrobutyricum through the PFOR pathway. However, only E. harbinense was able to compete for sugars against non-HPB. Competitive exclusion associated with competition for sugars, depletion of essential trace elements, bacteriocin production and resistance to inhibitory compounds could be carried out by non-HPB, increasing their relative abundances during the dark fermentation (DF) process. CONCLUSIONS: The global scenario obtained by PCA correlated the decrease in H2 production with the lactate:acetate molar ratio in the influent. At the beginning of co-digestion, this ratio had the minimum value considered for a net gain of ATP. This fact could cause the reduction of the relative abundance of C. tyrobutyricum. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This is the first study that demonstrated the feasibility of H2 production by Clostridiales from acid hydrolysates of ATAB in co-digestion with tequila vinasses.

This study aimed to characterize the prokaryotic community and putative microbial interactions involved in hydrogen (H2) production during the dark fermentation (DF) process, applying principal components analysis (PCA) to correlate changes in operational, physicochemical, and biological variables. For this purpose, a continuous stirred-tank reactor-type digester fed with tequila vinasses was operated at 24, 18, and 12 h of hydraulic retention times (HRTs) to apply organic loading rates of 20, 36, and 54 g-COD L-1 d-1, corresponding to stages I, II, and III, respectively. Results indicated high population dynamics for Archaea during the DF process toward a decrease in total sequences from 6299 to 99. Concerning the Bacteria community, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were dominant reaching a relative abundance of 57.67%, while dominant H2-producing bacteria (HPB) decreased from 25.76% to 21.06% during stage III. Putative competitive exclusion mechanisms such as competition for substrates, bacteriocins production, and micronutrient depletion carried out by Archaea and non-H2-producing bacteria (non-HPB), especially LAB, could negatively impact the dominance of HPB such as Ethanoligenens harbinense and Clostridium tyrobutyricum. As a consequence, low maximal volumetric H2 production rate (672 mL-H2 L-1 d-1) and yield (3.88 mol-H2 assimilated sugars-1) were obtained. The global scenario obtained by PCA correlations suggested that C. tyrobutyricum positively impacted H2 molar yield through butyrate fermentation using the butyryl-CoA:acetate CoA transferase pathway, while the most abundant HPB E. harbinense decreased its relative abundance at the shortest HRT toward the dominance of non-HPB. This study provides new insights into the microbial interactions and helps to better understand the DF performance for H2 production using tequila vinasses as substrate. KEY POINTS: • E. harbinense and C. tyrobutyricum were responsible for H2 production. • Clostridiales used acetate and butyrate fermentations for H2 production. • LAB won the competition for sugars against Clostridiales during DF. • Putative bacteriocins production and micronutrients depletion could favor LAB.

Commercial pooled semen from boars of maternal and terminal genetic lines was analysed over two consecutive years, as part of an external quality control program. Semen doses were prepared for two total sperm counts (2.0 × 109 /75 ml [n = 578] and 1.5 × 109 /34 ml [n = 643]). Semen doses were evaluated for motility, morphology and bacterial contamination at days 1 and 4 after collection. Additionally, temperature during transport was tracked and correlated to sperm motility. Sperm motility and morphology were significantly affected by genetic line, but not by total sperm per doses. Total motility (TM) was affected (p < .05) by season. Progressive motility (PM) was lower (p < .05) in some winter months, and higher (p < .05) in summer for maternal-line doses. Normal sperm morphology was higher (p < .05) in some months of late fall and winter, with an apparent decrease in some summer months. In general, motility was significantly higher on day 1 than on day 4, and was also affected (p < .05) by temperature, especially for terminal-line doses. Semen doses exposed to >15°C had higher (p < .05) TM, VSL (straight-line velocity) and linearity than doses exposed to <15°C. Progressive motility and straightness increased (p < .05) proportionally with temperature. At day 1, motility, average path velocity (VAP) and VSL increased (p < .05) with temperature, and was higher than the corresponding group at day 4, except for VSL. Sperm motility and kinematics at day 4 were similar between temperature groups, except for doses exposed to >20°C that had higher (p < .05) VAP and VSL than doses exposed to <12°C. Microbiology evaluation revealed that less than 8.2% (15/184) of the semen doses had bacterial growth. Sphingobacterium lactis was the most prevalent bacterium identified. In conclusion, genetic line strongly influences sperm motility, while total sperm count does not have an impact. Transient reduced temperatures during shipping do not impair sperm quality after 4 days of storage. Seasonal and temperature effects on sperm motility of pooled boar semen are not overcome by pre-production ejaculate selection and semen pooling.

We retrospectively analysed data from heterospermic and homospermic boar semen for motility and morphology during a 2-year period. Homospermic doses were also evaluated for viability, acrosome integrity, DNA fragmentation, osmolality and pH. Additionally, we investigated the effect of temperature upon arrival and the agreement between viability and motility as evaluating tool. We observed lower (p < .05) total motility (TM) and normal sperm morphology within summer and fall. Conversely, lower (p < .05) progressive motility (PM) was found at the beginning and end of each year. Viability and acrosome integrity were reduced (p < .05) in summer months but not exclusively, suggesting that samples could be compromised by transport temperature. Sperm DNA fragmentation was <6% with a small variation. Medium osmolality and pH slightly changed (p < .05). Sperm count was not source of variation on sperm parameters. Sample temperature upon arrival correlated with PM and VSL (p < .05), while motility was reduced <12°C (p < .05). Homospermic doses were less affected by season and arrival temperature, having better parameters (p < .05) than contemporaneous heterospermic samples but influenced by genetic line (p < .05). We found a high agreement between viable acrosome-intact sperm and TM, especially when TM was ≥80%. Our data verify the improvement of sperm quality during time as sperm count/dose does not affect quality, but season effect persists regardless of ejaculate selection at the stud. Homospermic doses exhibited better parameters than heterospermic doses, seemingly being more resilient to temperature variations, suggesting that selection for sperm quality within boars selected by growth traits can improve the product quality.

Diets high in bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols, have been used to mitigate metabolic syndrome (MetS). Polyphenols are a large group of naturally occurring bioactive compounds, classified into two main classes: non-flavonoids and flavonoids. Flavonoids are distributed in foods, such as fruits, vegetables, tea, red wine, and cocoa. Studies have already demonstrated the benefits of flavonoids on the cardiovascular and nervous systems, as well as cancer cells. The present review summarizes the results of clinical studies that evaluated the effects of flavonoids on the components of the MetS and associated complications when offered as supplements over the long term. The results show that flavonoids can significantly modulate several metabolic parameters, such as lipid profile, blood pressure, and blood glucose. Only theaflavin and catechin were unable to affect metabolic parameters. Moreover, only body weight and body mass index were unaltered. Thus, the evidence presented in this systematic review offers bases in support of a flavonoid supplementation, held for at least 3 weeks, as a strategy to improve several metabolic parameters and, consequently, reduce the risk of diseases associated with MetS. This fact becomes stronger due to the rare side effects reported with flavonoids.

The objective of this work is to generate recommendations on the management of allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) in primary myelofibrosis (PMF). A comprehensive systematic review of articles published between 1999 and 2015 (January) was used as a source of scientific evidence. The recommendations were produced through a Delphi process involving a panel of 23 experts appointed by the European LeukemiaNet and the European Blood and Marrow Transplantation Group. Key questions included patient selection, donor selection, pre-transplant management, conditioning regimen, post-transplant management, prevention, and management of post-transplant relapse. Patients with intermediate-2 or high-risk disease and age < 70 years should be considered candidates for allo-SCT. Patients with intermediate-risk 1 disease and age < 65 years should be considered candidates if they have refractory transfusion-dependent anemia, or a peripheral blood (PB) blast percentage > 2%, or adverse cytogenetics. Splenectomy before transplantation must be decided on a case-by-case basis. Patients with intermediate-2 or high-risk disease who lack a human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-matched sibling or unrelated donor should be enrolled in a protocol that uses HLA non-identical donors. PB was considered the most appropriate source of hematopoietic stem cells for transplants from HLA-matched unrelated donors and siblings. The optimal intensity of the conditioning regimen has yet to be defined. Strategies such as discontinuation of immunosuppressive drugs, infusion of donor lymphocytes, or both were considered adequate to prevent clinical relapse. In conclusion, we provide consensus-based recommendations aimed at optimizing allo-SCT in PMF. Unmet clinical needs were highlighted.


El objetivo de este trabajo es generar recomendaciones sobre el manejo del trasplante alogénico de células madre (alo-SCT) en la mielofibrosis primaria (MFP). Se utilizó una revisión sistemática integral de artículos publicados entre 1999 y 2015 (enero) como fuente de evidencia científica. Las recomendaciones se produjeron mediante un proceso Delphi en el que participó un panel de 23 expertos designados por la European LeukemiaNet y el European Blood and Marrow Transplantation Group. Las preguntas clave incluyeron la selección de pacientes, la selección de donantes, el manejo previo al trasplante, el régimen de acondicionamiento, el manejo posterior al trasplante, la prevención y el manejo de la recaída después del trasplante. Los pacientes con enfermedad de riesgo intermedio 2 o alto y edad < 70 años deben ser considerados candidatos para alo-SCT. Los pacientes con enfermedad de riesgo intermedio 1 y edad < 65 años deben ser considerados candidatos si presentan anemia refractaria dependiente de transfusiones, o un porcentaje de blastos en sangre periférica > 2%, o citogenética adversa. La esplenectomía previa al trasplante debe decidirse caso por caso. La intensidad óptima del régimen de acondicionamiento aún debe definirse. Se consideraron adecuadas estrategias como la suspensión de los fármacos inmunosupresores, la infusión de linfocitos del donante o ambas para evitar la recaída clínica. En conclusión, proporcionamos recomendaciones basadas en consenso destinadas a optimizar el alo-SCT en MFP. Se destacaron las necesidades clínicas insatisfechas.

Essential thrombocythemia (ET) is a chronic Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasm that has its main involvement in the megakaryopoietic lineage, generating sustained thrombocytosis in peripheral blood and an increase in the number of mature megakaryocytes in the bone marrow. In addition to marked thrombocytosis, it is characterized by increased thrombotic or hemorrhagic risk and the presence of constitutional symptoms. Patients with ET have a low but known risk of disease progression to myelofibrosis and/or acute leukemia. The diagnosis is made based on the 2016 WHO criteria. At present, available treatments for patients with ET are mainly aimed at minimizing the risk of thrombosis and/or bleeding.


La trombocitemia esencial (TE) es una neoplasia mieloproliferativa crónica Filadelfia negativa que tiene su principal involucro en la línea megacariopoyética, generando trombocitosis sostenida en la sangre periférica y un incremento en el número de megacariocitos maduros en médula ósea. Además de una marcada trombocitosis, se caracteriza por un mayor riesgo trombótico o hemorrágico y la presencia de síntomas constitucionales. Los pacientes con TE tienen un riesgo bajo, pero conocido, de evolución de la enfermedad a mielofibrosis y/o leucemia aguda. El diagnóstico se realiza con base en los criterios de la Organización Mundial de la Salud del 2016. Los tratamientos actualmente disponibles para los pacientes con TE están dirigidos principalmente a minimizar el riesgo de trombosis y/o hemorragia.

Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) are associated with a significant risk of thrombosis and the hypercoagulable environment of pregnancy increases this risk. The most frequent gestational complications consist of spontaneous abortion, thrombosis, bleeding, and hypertensive disease of pregnancy. Treatment depends on thrombotic risk, gestational trimester, and myeloproliferative neoplasm.


Las neoplasias mieloproliferativas (NMP) están asociadas a un riesgo notable de trombosis y el entorno de hipercoagulabilidad propio del embarazo aumenta este riesgo. Las complicaciones gestacionales más frecuentes consisten en: aborto espontáneo, trombosis, sangrado y enfermedad hipertensiva del embarazo. El tratamiento depende del riesgo trombótico, trimestre gestacional y neoplasia mieloproliferativa.

Polycythemia vera (PV) is mainly characterized by erythrocytosis, thrombotic and hemorrhagic predisposition, a variety of symptoms, and cumulative risks of fibrotic progression and/or leukemic evolution over time. The diagnosis is made based on the 2016 WHO criteria. The treatment of PV focuses on rapidly reducing the erythrocyte mass, either by means of phlebotomies or with cytoreductive treatment, and the reduction of thrombotic risk by correcting cardiovascular risk factors and the use of platelet antiaggregants.


La policitemia vera (PV) se caracteriza principalmente por eritrocitosis, predisposición trombótica y hemorrágica, una variedad de síntomas y riesgos acumulativos de progresión fibrótica y/o evolución leucémica a lo largo del tiempo. El diagnóstico se realiza con base en los criterios de la Organización Mundial de la Salud del 2016. El tratamiento de la PV se centra en reducir rápidamente la masa eritrocitaria, ya sea por medio de flebotomías o con tratamiento citorreductor, y la disminución del riesgo trombótico mediante la corrección de factores de riesgo cardiovascular y el uso de antiagregantes plaquetarios.

Patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms have an increased risk of thrombosis and bleeding. This risk must be identified, as well as individualizing the therapeutic strategy before invasive procedures; adequate cytoreduction reduces the risk of complications.


Los pacientes con neoplasias mieloproliferativas tienen un riesgo incrementado de trombosis y sangrado. Se debe identificar dicho riesgo, así como individualizar la estrategia terapéutica previo a los procedimientos invasivos; una adecuada citorreducción disminuye el riesgo de complicaciones.
