BACKGROUND: Neuropathic pain is a common complication in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), which seriously affects the quality of life of NMOSD patients, with no satisfactory treatment. And risk factors of neuropathic pain are still uncertain. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk factors of neuropathic pain in a NMOSD cohort. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our study was a retrospective case-cohort study, the patients diagnosed with NMOSD in the Department of Neurology from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine from January 2011 to October 2021 were screened. Inclusion criteria were: (1) patients diagnosed as NMOSD according to the International Panel for NMO Diagnosis (IPND) criteria, (2) the aquaporin-4 immunoglobulin G antibodies (AQP4-IgG) test was performed. Patients without AQP4-IgG antibody were excluded. Clinical data, including sex, age of the first onset, symptoms of the first episode including neuropathic pain and attack types, localization of lesions of the first episode on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Extended disability status Scale (EDSS) of the first onset, treatment of immunosuppression in the first acute phase, disease modifying therapy (DMT), treatment of neuropathic pain and APQ4-IgG status were collected from the hospital system database. Neuropathic pain was defined according to the International Association for the Study of Pain criteria and was described as "pain arising as a direct consequence of a lesion or disease affecting the somatosensory system". RESULTS: One hundred nineteen patients were screened and finally 86 patients fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria were enrolled in our study. The prevalence of neuropathic pain in patients with NMOSD was 43.0%. Univariate analysis showed that the factors associated with neuropathic pain were the age at the onset, the attack type of optic neuritis, the attack type of myelitis, length of spinal cord involvement, localization of thoracic lesion, optic lesion, upper thoracic lesions, lower thoracic lesions, extended spinal cord lesions (≥ 3 spinal lesions), extended thoracic lesions (≥ 4 thoracic lesions), intravenous immunoglobulin and mycophenolate mofetil. Multivariate regression analysis showed that extended thoracic lesions (OR 20.21 [1.18-346.05], P = 0.038) and age (OR 1.35 (1-1.81) P = 0.050) were independently associated with neuropathic pain among NMOSD patients and that gender (OR 12.11 (0.97-151.64) P = 0.053) might be associated with neuropathic pain among NMOSD patients. CONCLUSION: Extended thoracic lesions (≥ 4 thoracic lesions), age and gender might be independent risk factors of neuropathic pain among patients with NMOSD. However, with a small sample size and predominantly female, caution must be applied and these results need validating in further cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown high triglyceride (TG) is associated with platelet hyperactivation in metabolic syndrome patients. However, limited information is available regarding this relationship on dual anti-platelet therapy (DAPT) in ischemic stroke (IS). In this study, we attempted to evaluate the association between TG and high on-treatment platelet reactivity (HTPR) in IS patients. METHODS: Ischemic stroke patients who received maintenance doses of clopidogrel and aspirin were categorized and analyzed retrospectively in this research. The platelet reactivity was assessed by Thromboelastography (TEG). If ADP-induced platelet inhibition rate (ADPi)<30%, it was defined as HTPR, else, it would be defined as normal on-treatment platelet reactivity (NTPR). Patients were divided into high-TG-level and lower-TG-level based on a TG level of 1.7mmol/L, the cutoff point of hypertriglyceridemia. A logistic regression model was applied to calculate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: A total of 123 patients were included in this study and 24 (19.51%) patients were identified as HTPR. HTPR was observed in 36.2% of the patients in high-TG-level (TG≥1.7mmol/L) group while only 9.2% of the patients in the low-TG-level group (TG<1.7mmol/L) were HTPR (P<0.001 ). According to multivariate analysis, TG≥1.7mmol/L was independently associated with HTPR (OR=14.715, 2.445-88.549,P=0.003). CONCLUSIONS: High TG is an independent predictor of HTPR in IS patients. For IS patients with high TG level undergoing DAPT, platelet reactivity should be monitored to identify HTPR, which may proactively help to optimize the anti-platelet therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Given that many pregnant women have chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and that gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is linked to poor maternal and neonatal outcomes, we looked into the relationship between the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and GDM to see if a high HBV DNA load is linked to a higher risk of GDM in chronic maternal HBsAg carriers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our study included 39,539 pregnant women who gave birth at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University in Guangzhou, China, between January 1, 2009, and December 31, 2019. The patients were divided into two groups: HBsAg negative (36,500) and positive (3039). The viral load levels of 1250 HBsAg-positive women who had tested their HBV DNA load during pregnancy were separated into three groups. We utilized univariate and multivariable logistical regression analysis to determine the relationship between maternal chronic HBsAg carrier and GDM. RESULTS: Being HBsAg positive was discovered to be an independent risk factor for GDM.Pre-pregnancy Obesity and advanced age were linked to an increased incidence of GDM. Those with a high HBV DNA load (> 106 IU/mL) had a higher risk of GDM than HBsAg-positive women with a low viral load (< 103 IU/mL). Pre-eclampsia and intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) appeared to be more common in HBsAg-positive women than in uninfected women. CONCLUSIONS: Being HBsAg positive, advanced age, and pre-pregnancy obesity were all revealed to be independent risk factors for GDM in our study. In HBsAg carrier, pregnant women, a high HBV DNA burden was linked to a greater risk of GDM. Furthermore, being an HBsAg carrier during pregnancy raised the risk of ICP and pre-eclampsia.

The microbial community within the root system, the rhizosphere closely connected to the root, and their symbiotic relationship with the host are increasingly seen as possible drivers of natural pathogen resistance. Resistant cultivars have the most effective strategy in controlling the Chinese wheat yellow mosaic disease, but the roles of the root and rhizosphere microbial interactions among different taxonomic levels of resistant cultivars are still unknown. Thus, we aimed to investigate whether these microbial community composition and network characteristics are related to disease resistance and to analyze the belowground plant-associated microflora. Relatively high microbial diversity and stable community structure for the resistant cultivars were detected. Comparison analysis showed that some bacterial phyla were significantly enriched in the wheat root or rhizosphere of the resistant wheat cultivar. Furthermore, the root and rhizosphere of the resistant cultivars greatly recruited many known beneficial bacterial and fungal taxa. In contrast, the relative abundance of potential pathogens was higher for the susceptible cultivar than for the resistant cultivar. Network co-occurrence analysis revealed that a much more complex, more mutually beneficial, and a higher number of bacterial keystone taxa in belowground microbial networks were displayed in the resistant cultivar, which may have been responsible for maintaining the stability and ecological balance of the microbial community. Overall, compared with the susceptible cultivar, the resistant cultivar tends to recruit more potential beneficial microbial groups for plant and rhizosphere microbial community interactions. These findings indicate that beneficial rhizosphere microbiomes for cultivars should be targeted and evaluated using community compositional profiles. KEY POINTS: • Different resistance levels in cultivars affect the rhizosphere microbiome.. • Resistant cultivars tend to recruit more potential beneficial microbial groups. • Bacteria occupy a high proportion and core position in the microflora network.

Background: Contactin-1 (CNTN1) antibody-positive nodopathy is rare and exhibits distinct clinical symptoms such as tremors and ataxia. However, the mechanisms of these symptoms and the characteristics of the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) remain unknown. Case presentation: Here, we report a case of recurrent CNTN1 antibody-positive nodopathy. Initially, a 45-year-old woman experiencing numbness in the upper limbs and weakness in the lower limbs was diagnosed with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP). Eleven years later, her symptoms worsened, and she began to experience tremors and ataxia. Tests for serum CNTN1, GT1a, and GQ1b antibodies returned positive. Subsequently, she was diagnosed with CNTN1 antibody-positive nodopathy and underwent plasmapheresis therapy, although the treatment's efficacy was limited. To gain a deeper understanding of the disease, we conducted a comprehensive literature review, identifying 52 cases of CNTN1 antibody-positive nodopathy to date, with a tremor prevalence of 26.9%. Additionally, we found that the average CSF protein level in CNTN1 antibody-positive nodopathy was 2.57 g/L, with 87% of patients exhibiting a CSF protein level above 1.5 g/L. Conclusion: We present a rare case of recurrent CNTN1 antibody-positive nodopathy. Our findings indicate a high prevalence of tremor (26.9%) and elevated CSF protein levels among patients with CNTN1 antibody-positive nodopathy.

Background: Pain is a common symptom in multiple sclerosis (MS), especially neuropathic pain, which has a significant impact on patients' mental and physical health and quality of life. However, risk factors that related to neuropathic pain, still remain unclear. Objective: The study aimed to explore the risk factors of neuropathic pain among MS patients. Materials and methods: This retrospective study examined the consecutive patients diagnosed with MS in the Department of Neurology of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine between August 2011 and October 2022. Neuropathic pain was defined as "pain arising as a direct consequence of a lesion or disease affecting the somatosensory system". Demographic and clinical features were obtained from the electronic system of the hospital. Results: Our cohort revealed that the prevalence of patients with neuropathic pain in MS was 34.1%. The results indicated that the longer the spinal lesions, the greater the neuropathic pain risks (2-4: OR, 13.3(2.1-82), >5: OR, 15.2(2.7-86.8), p for tread: 0.037). Meanwhile, multivariate regression analysis showed that cervical and thoracic lesions (OR 4.276, 95% CI 1.366-13.382, P = 0.013), upper thoracic lesions (T1-T6) (OR 3.047, 95% CI 1.018-9.124, P = 0.046) were positively correlated with neuropathic pain, while basal ganglia lesions (OR 0.188, 95% CI 0.044-0.809, P = 0.025) were negatively correlated with neuropathic pain among MS patients. Conclusion: Extended spinal lesions (≥3 spinal lesions), cervical and thoracic lesions, upper thoracic lesions were independent risk factors of neuropathic pain among MS patients. Furthermore, our study found that the longer the spinal lesions, the greater the neuropathic pain risks.

Objective: To report the case of a patient with refractory neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), who, despite showing poor response or intolerance to multiple immunosuppressants, was successfully treated with Ofatumumab. Case presentation: A 42-year-old female was diagnosed with NMOSD in the first episode of the disease. Despite treatment with intravenous methylprednisolone, immunoglobulin, rituximab and immunoadsorption, together with oral steroids, azathioprine, mycophenolate mofetil and tacrolimus, she underwent various adverse events, such as abnormal liver function, repeated infections, fever, rashes, hemorrhagic shock, etc., and experienced five relapses over the ensuing four years. Finally, clinicians decided to initiate Ofatumumab to control the disease. The patient received 9 doses of Ofatumumab over the next 10 months at customized intervals. Her symptoms were stable and there was no recurrence or any adverse events. Conclusion: Ofatumumab might serve as an effective and safe alternative for NMOSD patients who are resistant to other current immunotherapies.

Introduction: In this study, we aimed to investigate the association between gut microbiota and high on-treatment platelet reactivity (HTPR) in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Methods: We enrolled a total of 48 AIS patients, including 19 HTPR patients and 29 non-high on-treatment platelet reactivity (NHTPR) patients, along with 10 healthy controls. Clinical and laboratory data, as well as stool samples, were collected from all participants. The composition and function of gut microbiota were assessed using 16S rRNA sequencing. Differences in the gut microbiota between the two groups were analyzed, and a diagnostic model based on the gut microbiota was established using random forest model. Results: HTPR patients exhibited a decreased microbial richness compared to NHTPR patients. Additionally, the relative abundance of unidentified_Clostridia and Ralstonia was lower in HTPR patients. Significant differences in biological functions, such as toxoplasmosis, were observed between the two groups. The combination of Ralstonia, unidentified-Clostridia, Mailhella, Anaerofustis, and Aggregatibacter showed excellent predictive ability for HTPR occurrence (AUC=0.896). When comparing AIS patients with healthy controls, alterations in the microbiota structure were observed in AIS patients, with imbalances in short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria and pathogenic bacteria. Significant differences in biological functions, such as oxidative phosphorylation, were noted between the two groups. The combination of Alloprevotella, Terrisporobacter, Streptococcus, Proteus, and unidentified_Bacteria exhibited strong predictive power for AIS occurrence (AUC=0.994). Conclusions: This study is the first to uncover the microbial characteristics of HTPR in AIS patients and demonstrate the predictive potential of specific bacterial combinations for HTPR occurrence.

RATIONALE: Spontaneous complete uterine rupture during gestation is rare and has no specific symptoms; however, it is a life-threatening event for both the fetus and mother. The rupture typically happens in labor and is uncommon before labor. Herein, we present the case of a woman, encountering complete rupture at third trimester followed by laparoscopic cornuostomy. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 26-year-old woman presented with acute right lower abdominal pain at 33 weeks and 5 days of gestation. DIAGNOSES: We made a diagnosis of threatened uterine rupture. INTERVENTION: Urgent cesarean section performed. Exploration of the uterine dehiscence wound demonstrated that the myometrium was completely ruptured at the primary laparoscopic surgical scar with a defect of 40 mm, and live birth and preservation of the uterus was achieved. OUTCOME: On the third day of operation, she had a good recovery and was discharged. After a 6-week postpartum follow-up, she displayed a good level of rehabilitation. LESSONS: Pregnancy after laparoscopic cornuostomy should be treated as high-risk gestation and the rupture during gestation of the uterine scar should be suspected once lower abdominal pain occurred. Swift diagnosis and prompt intervention play a crucial role in saving the lives of the fetus and the mother.

Background: Preeclampsia (PE) is a common obstetric complication that has caused significant harm to pregnant mothers. The clinical significance of poor nutritional status in PE patients is unclear. The aim of our study was to evaluate the nutritional status as measured by the prognostic nutritional index (PNI) score at admission, and its ability to predict in-hospitalization adverse events in patients with PE. Methods: We enrolled patients diagnosed with PE in the Third Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University from January 2019 to December 2021. Patients were divided into low and high nutritional status group according to the cut-off value of PNI score at admission using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. PNI score were used to explore the relationship between PNI score and in-hospitalization adverse events presented with hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: A total of 733 patients were included in the study. The proportion of adverse events and admission to intensive care unit (ICU) was higher in the low nutritional status group than in the high nutritional status group (P < 0.05). ROC curve analysis revealed an area under curve (AUC) of 0.628 for PNI score and the cut-off value of PNI was 37. The free-event rates determined by KM analysis were significantly lower in the low nutritional status compared to the high nutritional status (P < 0.05). Adjusted multivariate analysis showed that PNI score was independently associated with favorable outcomes (HR: 2.66; 95% CI: 1.724-4.050, P < 0.001). Conclusion: High PNI score at admission was associated with reduced in-hospitalization risk of adverse events in patients with PE. Additional enhancing nutritional status during hospitalization may help to prevent unfavorable prognosis in clinical practices.

Soil microbial communities play an important role in driving a variety of ecosystem functions and ecological processes and are the primary driving force in maintaining the biogeochemical cycle. It has been observed that soil microbial diversity decreases with land use intensification and climate change in the global background. It is essential to investigate whether the reduction in soil microbial diversity can affect soil multifunctionality. Thus, in this study, the dilution-to-extinction method was used to construct the gradient of soil microbial diversity, combined with high-throughput sequencing to explore the impact of the reduction in bacterial, fungal, and protist diversity on soil multifunctionality. The results showed that the soil microbial alpha diversity (richness and Shannon index) was significantly lower than that of the original soil. Principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) showed that the microbial community structure of original soil was significantly different from that of diluted soil, and the response of bacterial and fungal communities to diluted soil was higher than that of protists. The regression model showed that there was a significant negative linear relationship between the average response value of soil multi-function and the index of microbial diversity, indicating that the change in soil microbial community was the key factor in regulating soil multifunctionality. The regression model showed that there was a significant negative linear relationship between soil multifunctionality and microbial diversity, indicating that the change in soil microbial community was the key factor to regulate soil multi-kinetic energy. Through the aggregated boosted tree analysis (ABT) and regression model, we found that some specific microbial groups, such as the Solacocozyma and Holtermaniella of fungi and Rudaea of bacteria, could significantly promote the change in soil multifunctionality, which showed that key microbial taxa play an indicative role in biological processes. Furthermore, the structural equation model revealed that bacteria could affect soil multifunctionality through the interaction between microbiomes, which was the key biological factor driving the change in soil multifunctionality. This study provided experimental evidence for the impact of soil microbial diversity on soil multifunctionality, and promoted the notion that maintaining a certain diversity of soil microbial community in a single agricultural ecosystem, especially the diversity of key microbial taxa, is of great significance to the sustainable development of ecosystem function in the future.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors have been critical in the treatment of advanced malignancies in recent years. Encephalitis caused by atezolizumab is an uncommon immune-related adverse event. The case of a 65-year-old female diagnosed with encephalitis closely associated with atezolizumab medication for metastatic advanced breast cancer is presented in the current study. Following a fourth atezolizumab dose 10 days previously, the patient fell into a deep coma. Initial brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed multiple patchy T2 hyperintensities in the bilateral cerebellar hemisphere, vermis of the cerebellum, bilateral frontal lobe, temporal lobe, parietal lobe and occipital cortex. Meanwhile, there were aberrant signs on diffusion-weighted imaging. The diagnosis of atezolizumab-induced encephalitis seemed probable after ruling out other possible causes of encephalitis. Subsequently, the condition of the patient worsened and there were indications of cardiac and respiratory arrest. Chest compressions were provided immediately, as well as a balloon mask for assisted ventilation, a medication boost, stimulated breathing and other symptomatic therapy. The patient's vital signs temporarily stabilised after this series of rescue measures. The patient refused further therapy and insisted on being discharged, and died a few days after being discharged from the hospital. In this case, the patient's encephalitis symptoms associated with atezolizumab were not as typical as previously documented. Soil microbial communities are critical to plant health and productivity. Crop-associated microbial diversity may exhibit spatial specificity across regions and soil compartments. However, we lack sound evidence for the impact of variation in soil microbial diversity on plant productivity caused by regional differences. The main aims of this study are to explore the structure and functionality of the belowground (potato tuber surface and rhizosphere) microbial communities in three compartments and assess whether these communities contribute to potato productivity. Significant differences in alpha and beta diversities of belowground microbiota were detected in different compartments and regions, mainly due to differences in available soil nutrients and pH. Changes to microbial diversity between bulk soil and rhizosphere or tuber surface soil were significantly negatively correlated with potato yield and nutrient content and positively correlated with starch content. We further found some bacterial (Mucilaginibacter, Dokdonella, and Salinispora) and fungal (Solicoccozyma, Scytalidium, and Humicola) genera closely associated with potato yield and quality. Aggregated boosted tree prediction revealed that soil physicochemical properties and microbial diversity of tuber surface soil contributed more to potato yield; tuber surface soil bacterial contributed more to potato starch and nutrient content. Our findings provide experimental evidence that the significant differences in soil microbial diversity and specific microbial taxa enrichment may potentially influence crop productivity under soil physicochemical property change scenarios in the agricultural ecosystem. Understanding the mechanisms that govern microbial community assembly across soil-plant continuum is crucial for predicting the response of ecosystems to environmental changes. However, the impact of the health status of plant on microbial assembly across this continuum still remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated how wheat yellow mosaic (WYM), caused by the wheat mosaic virus transmitted by Polymyxa graminis, affected microbial assembly across soil (bulk soil, rhizosphere soil), and plant (roots and leaves) continuum in a winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) system in northern China, using null model analysis. The results showed that deterministic processes dominated the bacterial community assembly, whereas stochastic processes were primarily responsible for the assembly of the fungal communities. With increasing levels of WYM, deterministic processes were greatly enhanced for bacterial community assembly, accompanied by a decrease in community niche breadth. Intensified competition between bacteria and fungi and increased soil total nitrogen (TN) and soil organic carbon (SOC) contents were mainly responsible for the enhanced deterministic processes for bacterial community assembly. Random forest modeling indicated a strong potential of rhizosphere bacterial community assembly for predicting the pathological conditions of wheat. Structural equation modeling showed that disease level was positively correlated with SOC and TN contents, competitions between bacteria and fungi, and the contribution of variable selection processes to the bacterial community assembly in the wheat rhizosphere. Our study revealed the ecological mechanisms underlying the associations between microbial communities and soil-borne disease, and highlighted the significance of microbial community assembly for maintaining soil and plant health.

Inspired by a wood-like multicomponent structure, an interface-reinforced method was developed to fabricate high-performance cellulose nanofibril (CNF)/carbon nanotube (CNT) nanocomposites. Holocellulose nanofibrils (HCNFs) with core-shell structure were first obtained from bagasse via mild delignification and mechanical defibration process. The well-preserved native hemicellulose as the amphiphilic shell of HCNFs could act as a binding agent, sizing agent, and even dispersing agent between HCNFs and CNTs. Remarkably, both the tensile strength at high relative humidity (83% RH) and electrical conductivity of the HCNF/CNT nanocomposites were significantly improved up to 121 MPa and 321 S/m, respectively, demonstrating great superiority compared to normal CNF/CNT composite films. Furthermore, these HCNF/CNT composites with outstanding integrated performances exhibited great potential in the field of flexible liquid sensing.

Using the disulfide bond and carboxyl group in the molecular structure, α-lipoic acid was easily dissolved in the NaOH/urea solution and could be used as a ternary solvent for dissolving cellulose. Through this platform, N, S dual-doped hierarchical porous carbon aerogels (NSHPAs) were successfully obtained via directly dissolving cellulose in this ternary solvent, followed by gelling and carbonization. Because the fabricated carbon materials had a proper structure and a uniform heteroatom doping, their capacitance could reach 329 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1, 1647.5 mF cm-2 at 2.5 mA cm-2, and the fine rate property was 215 F g-1 at 10 A g-1 and 1075 mF cm-2 at 50 mA cm-2, respectively. Additionally, the electric double-layer contribution and pseudocapacitance contribution from the N,S dual doping were also analyzed. Meanwhile, they showed outstanding capacitance retention in a 2 M H2SO4 electrolyte. Additionally, a symmetric supercapacitor (SSC) was assembled by NSHPAs, and yielded a high specific capacitance of 63.6 F g-1 at 1 A g-1. At a power density of 130 W kg-1, the SSC showed a high energy density of 10.3 W h kg-1 and a long cycle life with 10% capacitance decay over 5000 cycles at 1 A g-1. These electrochemical performances suggest that this adopted synthesis route may open a novel avenue for the fabrication of heteroatom-doped carbon electrode materials, especially based on renewable and low-cost cellulose.

Introduction. S100B protein is a cytosolic calcium-binding protein with a molecular weight of 21 kDa, which is present in various cells and concentrated mainly in the glial cells, which play a vital role in the maintenance of cellular homeostasis in the central nervous system. It is possible that increased S100B protein level might be considered as sensitive and specific indicator to predict early brain damage. Aim. To investigate the prognostic value of serum S100B protein in neonates with perinatal asphyxia (PA) at 24 hours of postnatal age. Methods. A systematic review was performed. Inclusion criteria were studies including data of neonates with PA, monitored with serum S100B, and with neurodevelopmental follow-up of at least 2 weeks. The period of bibliographic search was until January 2017. The consulted databases were MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Embase. A combination of the following subject headings and keywords was adapted for each electronic database: "perinatal asphyxia," "hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy," "hypoxia-ischemia, brain," and "S100B." Meta-Disc1.4 software was used. Results. From the 1620 articles initially identified, 6 were finally included and reviewed. The overall diagnostic sensitivity of serum S100B was 0.80 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.68-0.88) and the specificity was 0.79 (95% CI = 0.70-0.87). But there was lower predictability value, that is, the positive likelihood ratio was only 3.26 (95% CI 1.74-6.12) and the negative likelihood ratio was 0.32 (95% CI = 0.20-0.5). The diagnostic odds ratio was 12.40 (95% CI = 4.66-33.0). Conclusion. Increased serum S100B level at 24 hours of postnatal life can demonstrate brain damage, but it should not be the only one used to predict PA outcome.

The rational design of high-performance, flexible, transparent, electrically conducting sensor attracts considerable attention. However, these designed devices predominantly utilize glass and plastic substrates, which are expensive and not environmentally friendly. Here, novel transparent and conductive woods (TCWs) were fabricated by using renewable wood substrates and low-cost conductive polymers. Polymerizable deep eutectic solvents (PDES), acrylic-acid (AA)/choline chloride (ChCl), were used as backfilling agents and in situ photopolymerized in the delignified wood, which endowed the materials with high transparency (transmittance of 90%), good stretchability (strain up to 80%), and high electrical conductivity (0.16 S m-1). The retained cellulose orientation and strong interactions between the cellulose-rich template and poly(PDES) endow TCWs with excellent mechanical properties. Moreover, TCWs exhibited excellent sensing behaviors to strain/touch, even at low strain. Therefore, these materials can be used to detect weak pressure such as human being's subtle bending-release activities. This work provides a new route to fabricate functional composite materials and devices which have promising potential for electronics applications in flexible displays, tactile skin sensors, and other fields.

In order to investigate and assess the pollution level of phthalic acid esters (PAEs) in farm soils and products from typical agricultural fields in areas of Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province, South China, 65 topsoil and 37 agricultural product samples were collected and contents of 6 PAEs compounds that classified by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as priority pollutants were determined by the GC-FID. The results indicated that total contents of the PAEs (∑ PAEs) in soils ranged from 0. 14 to 1. 14 mg x kg(-1), and the mean value was 0.43 mg x kg(-1), with the detected ratio of 100%. Various concentrations of PAEs differed in three land-use types were ordered by vegetable soil > orchard soil > paddy soil. Comparing with six U.S. EPA priority pollutants of PAEs, the contents of Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) and Dimethyl phthalate ( DMP) in soils exceeded the control limits of PAEs in the American soil by 93.85% and 27.69% respectively, but the rest four PAEs compounds were lower than the control limits. Generally, the pollution level of soils contaminated by PAEs in agricultural fields of Zhongshan City was relatively low. The contents of 3 PAEs in agricultural products ranged from 0.15 to 3.15 mg x kg(-1) with the average of 1.12 mg x kg(-1), which was lower than the suggested standards in USA and Europe and with low health risk. Meanwhile, ∑ PAEs concentrations in vegetables were higher than those both in rice and fruits. DBP and DEHP were the main components of PAEs both in agricultural soils and products, with higher percentage contents and detected ratio. ∑ PAEs and DBP contents in various agricultural products-soils had a significantly positive correlation, with Pearson coefficients (r) in vegetables-vegetable soils were 0.81 (P = 0.000), 0.75 (P = 0.000), and corresponding r among rice-paddy soil and fruits-fruit soils were 0.74 (P = 0.036), 0.65 (P = 0.041) and 0.66 (P = 0.029), 0.78 (P = 0.045), respectively. Although there existed a significant difference for single PAEs compound accumulated by agricultural products, the ∑ PAEs bioconcentration factors of all agricultural products were above 1. Therefore, the accumulation characteristics of PAEs should be fully concerned when farm soil quality assessment is taken.

UNLABELLED: Preterm delivery (PTD) is the leading cause of infant mortality and morbidity. However, the mechanism at the molecular level is still unknown. Placental inflammatory response and oxidative stress are associated with PTD. Thioredoxin-1 (TRX-1) regulates oxidative stress, inflammation, and the activities of transcription factors. OBJECTIVES: The objective was to detect in placental tissues the expressions of TRX-1 and the TRX-1-related molecules: tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), thioredoxin-1-binding protein-2 (TBP-2), hypoxia inducible transcription factor 1α (HIF-1α), and forkhead box protein O3A (FoxO3A). METHODS: PTD was defined as gestation of <37 weeks and term delivery (TD) as ≥37 weeks. The expressions of TRX-1 and TRX-1-related molecules were examined in placental tissues by real-time polymerase chain rection and western blot. RESULTS: The expressions of TRX-1, TNF-α, COX-2, HIF-1α, and FoxO3A in the placenta of PTD were significantly higher as compared with TD, but no difference was observed in TBP-2 expression. DISCUSSION: These results indicate that TRX-1 may be adaptively induced by the effects of inflammation and oxidative stress, suggesting protective roles for TRX-1 against these effects in the placenta of PTD.
