BACKGROUND: Elizabethkingia spp. are emerging as nosocomial pathogens causing various infections. These pathogens express resistance to a broad range of antibiotics, thus requiring antimicrobial combinations for coverage. However, possible antagonistic interactions between antibiotics have not been thoroughly explored. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of antimicrobial combinations against Elizabethkingia infections, focusing on their impact on pathogenicity, including biofilm production and cell adhesion. METHODS: Double-disc diffusion, time-kill, and chequerboard assays were used for evaluating the combination effects of antibiotics against Elizabethkingia spp. We further examined the antagonistic effects of antibiotic combinations on biofilm formation and adherence to A549 human respiratory epithelial cells. Further validation of the antibiotic interactions and their implications was performed using ex vivo hamster precision-cut lung sections (PCLSs) to mimic in vivo conditions. RESULTS: Antagonistic effects were observed between cefoxitin, imipenem and amoxicillin/clavulanic acid in combination with vancomycin. The antagonism of imipenem toward vancomycin was specific to its effects on the genus Elizabethkingia. Imipenem further hampered the bactericidal effect of vancomycin and impaired its inhibition of biofilm formation and the adhesion of Elizabethkingia meningoseptica ATCC 13253 to human cells. In the ex vivo PCLS model, vancomycin exhibited dose-dependent bactericidal effects; however, the addition of imipenem also reduced the effect of vancomycin. CONCLUSIONS: Imipenem reduced the bactericidal efficacy of vancomycin against Elizabethkingia spp. and compromised its capacity to inhibit biofilm formation, thereby enhancing bacterial adhesion. Clinicians should be aware of the potential issues with the use of these antibiotic combinations when treating Elizabethkingia infections.

Spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) constitutes a significant portion of acute stroke incidents worldwide, often leading to post-stroke dysphagia (PSD), affecting 50-77% of survivors and worsening patient morbidity. This study aimed to identify predictive variables for PSD among patients with spontaneous ICH. A retrospective cohort study was conducted on adult patients with acute spontaneous ICH, confirmed by brain computed tomography, from June 2019 to June 2023. We analyzed demographic, neuroimaging, and stroke-specific characteristics and rehabilitation indicators. PSD was evaluated using nasogastric (NG) tube retention and the Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS) levels at 4 and 12 weeks post-ICH. Statistical analyses involved univariate and multivariate logistic regression to identify PSD predictors. A total of 310 ICH patients were included in the study. At 4 weeks, significant predictors for NG tube retention included 24-hour National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores, estimated glomerular filtration rate and sitting balance. At 12 weeks, hospital stay duration and ICH score were significant predictors for NG tube retention. Regarding the FOIS, significant predictors at 4 weeks included higher 24-hour NIHSS scores, compromised sitting balance, immobility-related complications, initial hematoma volume and intraventricular hemorrhages. At 12 weeks, older age and higher 24-hour NIHSS scores significantly predicted lower FOIS levels. Our findings demonstrate that PSD in ICH patients is influenced by a complex interplay of factors, including stroke severity, renal function, and physical impairment. The study highlights the importance of early neurological assessment, physical function, and comprehensive management in improving swallowing outcomes, emphasizing a multifaceted approach to enhancing outcomes for ICH survivors.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Multiple clinical factors have been reported to be associated with functional outcomes in patients with stroke. However, little is known about prognostic predictors of functional independence in patients with stroke undergoing endovascular thrombectomy (EVT). Our study aimed to investigate the correlation between multiple prognostic variables (including EVT and rehabilitation-related parameters) and functional outcomes in patients post-EVT. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study recruited patients hospitalized between December 2018 and March 2022. Patients with stroke with large-vessel occlusion who underwent EVT were eligible for inclusion in the study. Prognostic factors, including premorbid characteristics, laboratory data, EVT- and rehabilitation-related parameters, functional activity level, balance ability, swallowing, and sphincter function, were collected. Logistic regression and generalized linear models were used to analyze their correlations with functional outcomes. RESULTS: A total of 148 patients were included. In the univariate logistic regression analysis, younger age, premorbid functional independence, higher hemoglobin (Hb) level, lower National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score, absence of hemorrhagic transformation in 14 days, no nasogastric (NG) tube placement, earlier rehabilitation, frequent daily rehabilitation sessions, more out-of-bed rehabilitation, better ability of sitting up, better initial sitting balance, higher Barthel index (BI), absence of immobility, and neurological complications were associated with favorable outcomes at 3 months. In the stepwise regression model, the predictors of favorable function at 3 months included age, ability to sit up, and frequency of daily rehabilitation sessions; favorable outcomes at 6 months were associated with age, ability to sit up, and swallowing function. CONCLUSION: In patients with stroke post-EVT, better functional outcomes were associated with prognostic variables, including younger age, better ability to sit up, normal swallowing function, and frequent daily rehabilitation sessions.

Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) is one of the most common causes of acute kidney injury (AKI). However, management is still limited, and the cellular response to radiocontrast removal for CIN remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the latent effects of iohexol in cultured renal tubular cells with or without the removal of iohexol by medium replacement. HK2 renal tubular cells were subcultured 24 h before use in CIN experiments. Three treatment groups were established: the control, a radiocontrast (iohexol)-only group at 75 mg I/mL (I-75), and iohexol exposure for 24 h with culture medium replacement (I-75/M). Cell cycle arrest, fibrogenic mediator assays, cell viability, cell function, and cell-cycle-related protein expression were compared between groups. Iohexol induced numerous changes in HK2 renal tubular cells, such as enlarged cell shape, cell cycle arrest, increased apoptosis, and polyploidy. Iohexol inhibited the expression of cyclins, CDKs, ZO-1, and E-cadherin but conversely enhanced the expression of p21 and fibrosis-related genes, including TGF-ß1, CTGF, collagen I, collagen III, and HIF-1α within 60 hr after the exposure. Except for the recovery from cell cycle arrest and cell cycle gene expression, notably, the removal of iohexol by medium replacement could not fully recover the renal tubular cells from the formation of polyploid cells, the adhesion or spreading, or the expression of fibrosis-related genes. The present study demonstrates, for the first time, that iohexol exerts latent cytotoxic effects on cultured renal tubular cells after its removal, suggesting that these irreversible cell changes may cause the insufficiency of radiocontrast reduction in CIN, which is worth investigating further.

To characterize the scapular pitching biomechanics in symptomatic GIRD pitchers (SG) compared to asymptomatic GIRD (ASG) and healthy pitchers. The scapular kinematics and associated muscle activities during pitching were recorded in 33 high school pitchers. Compared to healthy, GIRD pitchers had less scapular posterior tilt in each pitching event (average difference, AD=14.4°, p<0.01) and ASG demonstrated less scapular upward rotation at ball release (AD=12.8°, p<0.01) and greater muscle activity in the triceps brachii in the early-cocking phase (AD=9.9%, p=0.015) and in the serratus anterior in the late-cocking phase (AD=30.8%, p<0.01). Additionally, SG had less muscular activity on triceps brachii in the acceleration phase and serratus anterior in the cocking phase (AD=37.8%, p=0.016; AD=15.5%, p<0.01, respectively) compared to ASG. GIRD pitchers exhibited less scapular posterior tilt during pitching, which may cause impingement. Since tightness of the anterior shoulder is a common cause of inadequacy of posterior tilt during arm elevation, stretching exercise of the anterior shoulder is recommended. Given the inadequate recruitment during pitching in the GIRD pitchers, symptoms may develop following potential impingement.

Chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia (CIT) is a common complication when treating malignancies with cytotoxic agents wherein carboplatin is one of the most typical agents causing CIT. Janus kinase 2 (JAK2) is one of the critical enzymes to megakaryocyte proliferation and differentiation. However, the role of the JAK2 in CIT remains unclear. In this study, we used both carboplatin-induced CIT mice and MEG-01 cell line to examine the expression of JAK2 and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) pathway. Under CIT, the expression of JAK2 was significantly reduced in vivo and in vitro. More surprisingly, the JAK2/STAT3 pathway remained inactivated even when thrombopoietin (TPO) was administered. On the other hand, carboplatin could cause prominent S phase cell cycle arrest and markedly increased apoptosis in MEG-01 cells. These results showed that the thrombopoiesis might be interfered through the downregulation of JAK2/STAT3 pathway by carboplatin in CIT, and the fact that exogenous TPO supplement cannot reactivate this pathway.

The effects of 3 bufadienolides, namely kalantuboside B, kalantuboside A, and bryotoxin C, isolated from Kalanchoe tubiflora (Harvey) were evaluated and characterized in CL1-5 highly metastatic human lung cancer cells. In contrast to their apoptosis-promoting activity in other cancer cells, these bufadienolides only slight or did not induce apoptosis in CL1-5 cancer cells. Instead, they activated an autophagy pathway, as indicated by increased autophagosome formation. Autophagy induced by these bufadienolides was demonstrated to be linked to the down-regulation of p-mTOR and the up-regulation of LC3-II, ATG5, ATG7, and Beclin-1. Our findings revealed an autophagy as the alternative mechanism of drug action by bufadienolides in CL1-5 lung cancer cells and provided evidence that bufadienolides are a potential therapeutic strategy for highly metastatic human lung cancer.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Low-grade chronic inflammation in visceral adipose tissue and the intestines are important drivers of obesity associated insulin resistance. Bioactive compounds derived from plants are an important source of potential novel therapies for the treatment of chronic diseases. In search for new immune based treatments of obesity associated insulin resistance, we screened for tissue relevant anti-inflammatory properties in 20 plant-based extracts. METHODS: We screened 20 plant-based extracts to assess for preferential production of IL-10 compared to TNFα, specifically targetting metabolic tissues, including the visceral adipose tissue. We assessed the therapeutic potential of the strongest anti-inflammatory compound, indigo, in the C57BL/6J diet-induced obesity mouse model with supplementation for up to 16 weeks by measuring changes in body weight, glucose and insulin tolerance, and gut barrier function. We also utilized flow cytometry, quantitative PCR, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and histology to measure changes to immune cells populations and cytokine profiles in the intestine, visceral adipose tissue (VAT), and liver. 16SrRNA sequencing was performed to examine gut microbial differences induced by indigo supplementation. RESULTS: We identifed indigo, an aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) ligand agonist, as a potent inducer of IL-10 and IL-22, which protects against high-fat diet (HFD)-induced insulin resistance and fatty liver disease in the diet-induced obesity model. Therapeutic actions were mechanistically linked to decreased inflammatory immune cell tone in the intestine, VAT and liver. Specifically, indigo increased Lactobacillus bacteria and elicited IL-22 production in the gut, which improved intestinal barrier permeability and reduced endotoxemia. These changes were associated with increased IL-10 production by immune cells residing in liver and VAT. CONCLUSIONS: Indigo is a naturally occurring AhR ligand with anti-inflammatory properties that effectively protects against HFD-induced glucose dysregulation. Compounds derived from indigo or those with similar properties could represent novel therapies for diseases associated with obesity-related metabolic tissue inflammation.

Elizabethkingia genus is emerging in hospitals and resistant to multiple antibiotics. The intrinsic imipenem resistance of Elizabethkingia genus is related to two chromosome-encoded metallo-beta-lactamases (MBLs), BlaB and GOB. This study was aimed to investigate the in vitro activity of imipenem, vancomycin, and rifampicin in clinical Elizabethkingia species. The distribution and heterogeneity of MBLs responsible for imipenem resistance were also evaluated. A total of 167 Elizabethkingia isolates from different patients were collected, including E. anophelis (142), E. meningoseptica (11), and E. miricola (14). All isolates were evaluated by the broth microdilution assay, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) combination disk test, and EDTA-based microdilution test. The characteristics of BlaB and GOB were evaluated in phylogenetic analysis and heterologous expression experiments. Most of the isolates were susceptible to rifampin (94%), whereas none of the isolates were susceptible to imipenem. Vancomycin showed intermediate effectiveness. EDTA could reduce 4 folds or more minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of imipenem in 105 isolates (62.9%). Of the isolates, the amino acid sequences of BlaB and GOB were divided into 22 and 25 different types, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis showed BlaB and GOB are species-specific proteins. Furthermore, GOB and BlaB from E. anophelis showed higher imipenem hydrolysis efficiency than those from the other two species. Rifampicin remained the most active agent in the current study. The mechanism of Elizabethkingia resistance to imipenem primarily stemmed from MBLs but other mechanisms could also exist, which requires further investigation.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a common complication of diabetes mellitus (DM) that imposes an enormous burden on the healthcare system. Although some studies show that traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatments confer a protective effect on DN, the long-term impact remains unclear. This study aims to examine end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and mortality rates among TCM users with DN. METHODS: A total of 125,490 patients with incident DN patients from 2004 to 2006 were identified from the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan and followed until 2012. The landmark method was applied to avoid immortal time bias, and propensity score matching was used to select 1:1 baseline characteristics-matched cohort. The Kaplan-Meier method and competing-risk analysis were used to assess mortality and ESRD rates separately. RESULTS: Among all eligible subjects, about 60% of patients were classified as TCM users (65,812 TCM users and 41,482 nonusers). After 1:1 matching, the outcomes of 68,882 patients were analyzed. For the ESRD rate, the 8-year cumulative incidence was 14.5% for TCM users [95% confidence interval (CI): 13.9-15.0] and 16.6% for nonusers (95% CI: 16.0-17.2). For the mortality rate, the 8-year cumulative incidence was 33.8% for TCM users (95% CI: 33.1-34.6) and 49.2% for nonusers (95% CI: 48.5-49.9). After adjusting for confounding covariates, the cause-specific hazard ratio of ESRD was 0.81 (95% CI: 0.78-0.84), and the hazard ratio of mortality for TCM users was 0.48 (95% CI: 0.47-0.50). The cumulative incidence of mortality increased rapidly among TCM users with ESRD (56.8, 95% CI: 54.6-59.1) when compared with TCM users without ESRD (30.1, 95% CI: 29.4-30.9). In addition, TCM users who used TCM longer or initiated TCM treatments after being diagnosed with DN were associated with a lower risk of mortality. These results were consistent across sensitivity tests with different definitions of TCM users and inverse probability weighting of subjects. CONCLUSIONS: The lower ESRD and mortality rates among patients with incident DN correlates with the use of TCM treatments. Further studies about specific TCM modalities or medications for DN are still needed.

Ethylene Response Factor 1 (ERF1) plays a crucial role in biotic and abiotic stress responses. Previous studies have shown that ERF1 regulates stress-responsive gene expression by binding to different cis-acting elements in response to various stress signals. ERF1 was also reported to be unstable in the dark, and it regulates hypocotyl elongation. Here, we elucidated the mechanism underlying degradation of ERF1. Yeast two-hybrid screening showed that UBIQUITIN-CONJUGATING ENZYME 18 (UBC18) interacted with ERF1. The interaction between ERF1 and UBC18 was verified using pull-down assays and coimmunoprecipitation analyses. We then compared the ERF1 protein abundance in the UBC18 mutant and overexpression plants. Based on the results of protein degradation and in vivo ubiquitination assays, we proposed that UBC18 mediates ERF1 ubiquitination and degradation. ERF1 was more stable in UBC18 mutants and less stable in UBC18 overexpression lines compared with that in wild-type plants. ERF1 was degraded by the 26S proteasome system via regulation of UBC18 and promotes dark-repression of downstream genes and proline accumulation. UBC18 negatively regulated drought and salt stress responses by altering the abundance of ERF1 and the expression of genes downstream of ERF1.

The feasibility of a single sideband (SSB) PAM4 intensity-modulation and direct-detection (IM/DD) transmission based on a CMOS ADC and DAC is experimentally demonstrated in this work. To cost effectively build a >50 Gb/s system as well as to extend the transmission distance, a low cost EML and a passive optical filter are utilized to generate the SSB signal. However, the EML-induced chirp and dispersion-induced power fading limit the requirements of the SSB filter. To separate the effect of signal-signal beating interference, filters with different roll-off factors are employed to demonstrate the performance tolerance at different transmission distance. Moreover, a high resolution spectrum analysis is proposed to depict the system limitation. Experimental results show that a minimum roll-off factor of 7 dB/10GHz is required to achieve a 51.84Gb/s 40-km transmission with only linear feed-forward equalization.

This study compared two nonlinear distortion compensation techniques, SSII cancellation (in the frequency domain) and Volterra filtering (in the time domain), in a >50-Gbps/λ OFDM-IMDD LR-PON. Experiment results for SNR, BER, and data rate (based on a bit-loading algorithm) revealed that the performance of frequency-domain SSII cancellation is unaffected by power fading; however, it depends heavily on the precision of the mathematical model. Conversely, although time-domain Volterra filtering is affected by the faded waveform, adaptive-weighting provides flexibility in dealing with mixed nonlinear distortion, particularly that associated with the interplay between fiber dispersion and fiber nonlinearity. 4-channel WDM-OFDM and 3rd-order Volterra filtering were used to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed scheme in a 200-Gbps IMDD system. Based on 10-GHz EAM and PIN, we achieved 200-Gbps transmission over a distance of 60 km with a loss budget of >30 dB, while providing support for 128 ONUs at >1.6 Gbps/ONU without the need for an inline amplifier or pre-amplifier.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Occult hepatitis B infection (OHB) is not rare in countries that are endemic for hepatitis B virus (HBV) and in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Notably, OHB has been shown to play a role in the progression of liver diseases, including the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC); however, the data is inconsistent. We aim to clarify the contribution of concurrent OHB to the progression of liver diseases in a long-term cohort of patients with HCV infection and to investigate the value of total anti-hepatitis B core (anti-HBc) antibody as a surrogate OHB biomarker. METHODS: We included 250 chronic anti-HCV-positive patients who had resolved HBV infection (anti-HBc positive and hepatitis B surface antigen negative). OHB was then detected using a sensitive commercial assay for serum HBV DNA with a low limit of detection of 6 IU/mL. Clinical outcomes, including the development of liver cirrhosis, HCC, and all-cause deaths, were compared between OHB-positive and OHB-negative patients. RESULTS: At baseline, only 183 (73.20%) patients had positive HCV ribonucleic acid, and 56 (30.60%) of these 183 patients with active HCV infection had OHB. The presence of OHB did not correlate with any adverse clinical outcome in multivariate analyses. In addition, chronic hepatitis C patients with OHB did not have a higher level of serum total anti-HBc. CONCLUSION: OHB infection may not contribute to the development of adverse liver outcomes in patients with chronic HCV.

ORA47 (octadecanoid-responsive AP2/ERF-domain transcription factor 47) of Arabidopsis thaliana is an AP2/ERF domain transcription factor that regulates jasmonate (JA) biosynthesis and is induced by methyl JA treatment. The regulatory mechanism of ORA47 remains unclear. ORA47 is shown to bind to the cis-element (NC/GT)CGNCCA, which is referred to as the O-box, in the promoter of ABI2. We proposed that ORA47 acts as a connection between ABA INSENSITIVE1 (ABI1) and ABI2 and mediates an ABI1-ORA47-ABI2 positive feedback loop. PORA47:ORA47-GFP transgenic plants were used in a chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assay to show that ORA47 participates in the biosynthesis and/or signaling pathways of nine phytohormones. Specifically, many abscisic acid (ABA) and JA biosynthesis and signaling genes were direct targets of ORA47 under stress conditions. The JA content of the P35S:ORA47-GR lines was highly induced under wounding and moderately induced under water stress relative to that of the wild-type plants. The wounding treatment moderately increased ABA accumulation in the transgenic lines, whereas the water stress treatment repressed the ABA content. ORA47 is proposed to play a role in the biosynthesis of JA and ABA and in regulating the biosynthesis and/or signaling of a suite of phytohormone genes when plants are subjected to wounding and water stress.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis among children is an important issue due to relapses and skin manifestations. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is commonly used to treat children with atopic dermatitis. The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics and TCM prescriptions of patients with atopic dermatitis using a nationwide database. METHODS: Children younger than 12 years of age diagnosed with atopic dermatitis, defined as ICD-9-CM codes 691.8 and 692.x, were identified from the database. Data on age, diagnosis codes, area of residence and use of corticosteroids of the TCM users were recorded. Association rule mining was used to analyze the prescriptions used for atopic dermatitis. RESULTS: We identified 13,646 children with atopic dermatitis using TCM in 2007. Female gender (OR: 0.83 for male gender), adolescence (OR: 10.0, 95 % CI: 8.88-11.15) and allergic rhinitis (OR: 2.44, 95 % CI: 2.10-2.85) were associated with the use of TCM. Fewer of the TCM users were prescribed with corticosteroids (35.8 % of all TCM users), but the TCM users had a higher rate of long-term topical corticosteroid therapy (10.6 % for TCM users versus 2.0 % for those who did not use TCM). Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) was used by 93.7 % of all TCM users in 36,398 prescriptions. On average, 5.6 kinds of CHM were used in combination. The relationship between the CHMs constituted a network, in which Xiao-Feng-San was the core treatment for atopic dermatitis. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we described the characteristics of children with atopic dermatitis who use TCM in Taiwan. and identified the core CHM treatment. Further research on the safety and efficacy of this treatment are still needed.

Litsea cubeba L., also named as Makauy, is a traditional herb and has been used as cooking condiment or tea brewing to treat diseases for aborigines. The present study was undertaken to explore the chemical compositions of the fruit essential oil of L. cubeba (LCEO) and the immunomodulatory effect of LCEO on dendritic cells and mice. The LCEO was analyzed using gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) with direct injection (DI/GC) or headspace-solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME/GC). In total, 56 components were identified, of which 48 were detected by DI/GC and 49 were detected by HS-SPME/GC. The principal compounds were citral (neral and geranial). An immunosuppressive activity of LCEO was investigated with bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (DCs) which have a critical role to trigger the adaptive immunity. Additionally, the inhibitory effect of LCEO on immune response was elucidated by performing the contact hypersensitivity (CHS) responses in mice. Our results clearly showed that LCEO decreases the production of TNF-α and cytokine IL-12 in a dose-dependent manner in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated DCs. CHS response and the infiltrative T cells were inhibited in the tested ears of the mice co-treated with LCEO. We demonstrate, for the first time, that the LCEO mainly containing citral exhibits an immunosuppressive effect on DCs and mice, indicating that LCEO can potentially be applied in the treatment of CHS, inflammatory diseases, and autoimmune diseases.

Arabidopsis AGL13 is a member of the AGL6 clade of the MADS box gene family. GUS activity was specifically detected from the initiation to maturation of both pollen and ovules in AGL13:GUS Arabidopsis. The sterility of the flower with defective pollen and ovules was found in AGL13 RNAi knockdown and AGL13 + SRDX dominant-negative mutants. These results indicate that AGL13 acts as an activator in regulation of early initiation and further development of pollen and ovules. The production of similar floral organ defects in the severe AGL13 + SRDX and SEP2 + SRDX plants and the similar enhancement of AG nuclear localization efficiency by AGL13 and SEP3 proteins suggest a similar function for AGL13 and E functional SEP proteins. Additional fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) analysis indicated that, similar to SEP proteins, AGL13 is able to interact with AG to form quartet-like complexes (AGL13-AG)2 and interact with AG-AP3-PI to form a higher-order heterotetrameric complex (AGL13-AG-AP3-PI). Through these complexes, AGL13 and AG could regulate the expression of similar downstream genes involved in pollen morphogenesis, anther cell layer formation and the ovule development. AGL13 also regulates AG/AP3/PI expression by positive regulatory feedback loops and suppresses its own expression through negative regulatory feedback loops by activating AGL6, which acts as a repressor of AGL13. Our data suggest that AGL13 is likely a putative ancestor for the E functional genes which specifies male and female gametophyte morphogenesis in plants during evolution.

To increase the traffic rate in phosphor-LED visible light communication (VLC), a multi-band orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) modulation is first proposed and demonstrated. In the measurement, we do not utilize optical blue filter to increase modulation bandwidth of phosphor-LED in the VLC system. In this proposed scheme, different bands of OFDM signals are applied to different LED chips in a LED lamp, this can avoid the power fading and nonlinearity issue by applying the same OFDM signal to all the LED chips in a LED lamp. Here, the maximum increase percentages of traffic rates are 41.1%, 17.8% and 17.8% under received illuminations of 200, 500 and 1000 Lux, respectively, when the proposed three-band OFDM modulation is used in the VLC system. In addition, the analysis and verification by experiments are also performed.

Some ergostane triterpenoids from Taiwanofungus camphoratus have been shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory activity in vitro. However, the effect of ergostane triterpenoids on the immune response remains unknown. In this study, we elucidated that ergostane triterpenoids significantly decreased the cytokines and chemokine release by dendritic cells (DC) and that, in the case of zhankuic acid C (ZAC), the decrease was dose-dependent and inhibited DC maturation. ZAC inhibited the contact hypersensitivity response and infiltrative T cells in the ears of DNFB-stimulated mice. Thus, we demonstrate for the first time that ZAC exhibits an immunosuppressive effect on DC activation and the contact hypersensitivity response. It is suggested that ZAC can potentially be used for treating chronic inflammation and autoimmune diseases.
