RESUMO

Manipulating the motion of water droplets on surfaces, which is crucial for various applications, such as microfluidics and heat transfer, presents considerable challenges, primarily due to the significant influence of capillary forces. This effect becomes more pronounced when droplets are in close proximity, often resulting in undesired coalescence. Triboelectrification, which involves charging pure water droplets, is a promising approach to enhance the ability to manipulate water droplets. For effective triboelectrification, charges must accumulate within the droplets; this ensures efficient and sustained droplet manipulation while minimizing dissipation. Low-friction, superhydrophobic, insulating surfaces are ideal for this purpose. However, few studies have explored the application of insulating superhydrophobic surfaces to manipulate droplet motion. In this study, we investigated the behavior of water droplets on insulating superhydrophobic quartz surfaces after triboelectrification. The droplets acquired significant charge when dripped onto a superhydrophobic glass surface. Consequently, these charged droplets exhibited behaviors such as repulsion and acceleration from one another, uphill movement, and rapid long-distance transport to specific positions. These advancements in droplet manipulation techniques hold promise for diverse fields such as microfluidics and heat exchangers.

RESUMO

Herein, a tandem synthetic route for constructing sulfonyl indanes and dioxadibenzofused macrocycles is described. This strategy involves a transition-metal-free, base-mediated tandem C- and O-alkylative annulation of ß-ketosulfones with 1,2-bisbromomethyl arenes with moderate to excellent yields under open-vessel reaction conditions. In the overall reaction process, two carbon-carbon (C-C) and two carbon-oxygen (C-O) bonds are formed. Various base-promoted reaction conditions are screened for this one-pot easy-to-operate conversion.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in patients with cirrhosis. Lactulose non-adherence is one of the most frequently reported precipitants of hospital admission for HE. AIMS: We aimed to identify which factors contribute most to lactulose non-adherence and propose strategies to promote greater adherence and utilization of lactulose. METHODS: Participants in this study consisted of patients with cirrhosis who were taking lactulose for prevention of HE. Subjects were administered the Morisky Adherence Scale 8 (MAS-8) and a customized 16-question survey that assessed barriers to lactulose adherence. Results from the MAS-8 were used to stratify subjects into "adherent" and "non-adherent" groups. Survey responses were compared between groups. RESULTS: We enrolled 129 patients in our study, of whom 45 were categorized as "adherent and 72 were categorized as "non-adherent." Barriers to adherence included large volumes of lactulose, high frequency of dosing, difficulty remembering to take the medication, unpleasant taste, and medication side-effects. Most patients (97%) expressed understanding of the importance of lactulose, and 71% of patients felt that lactulose was working to manage their HE. Hospital admission rates for HE was higher in non-adherent patients, although this difference was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: We identified several factors that contribute to lactulose non-adherence among patients treated for HE. Many of these factors are potentially modifiable. Patient and care-giver education are critical to assure adherence. Pharmacists and nurses are an essential but underutilized aspect of education regarding proper medication use.

RESUMO

Unlike isolable tin(II) hydrides supported by bulky ligands reported in the literature, this research describes the synthesis and characterization of thermally stable tin(II) hydrides LPhSnH (1-H) and MeLSnH (2-H) stabilized by sterically undemanding N,N,N-coordinating pincer-type ligands (LPh = 2,5-dipyridyl-3,4-diphenylpyrrolato; MeL = 2,5-bis(6-methylpyridyl)pyrrolato). The results from previous reports reveal that attempts to access tin(II) hydrides containing less-bulky ligands have had limited success, and decomposition to tin(I) distannynes often occurs. The key to the successful isolation of 1-H and 2-H is the identification of the role of Lewis acidic BsBu3, generated upon delivering hydride from commonly used hydride reagents M[BsBu3H] ("selectrides", M = Li or K). This study details compelling experimental evidence and theoretical results of the role played by BsBu3, which catalyzes the dehydrocoupling reactions of 1-H and 2-H to yield tin(I) distannynes LPhSn-SnLPh (12) and MeLSn-SnMeL (22) with the liberation of H2. To avoid the interference of BsBu3, 1-H and 2-H can be isolated in pure forms using pinacolborane as the hydride donor with LPhSnOMe (1-OMe) and MeLSnOMe (2-OMe) as reactants, respectively. DFT calculations and experimental observations indicate that the coordination of the Sn-H bond of 1-H to BsBu3 leaves an electrophilic tin center, rendering the nucleophilic attack by the second equivalent of 1-H forming a Sn-Sn bond.

RESUMO

Metal oxide ZrO2has been widely explored for resistive switching application due to excellent properties like high ON/OFF ratio, superior data retention, and low operating voltage. However, the conduction mechanism at the atomistic level is still under debate. Therefore, we have performed comprehensive insights into the role of neutral and charged oxygen vacancies in conduction filament (CF) formation and rupture, which are demonstrated using the atomistic simulation based on density functional theory (DFT). Formation energy demonstrated that the fourfold coordinated oxygen vacancy is more stable. In addition, the electronic properties of the defect included supercell confirm the improvement in electrical conductivity due to the presence of additional energy states near Fermi energy. The CF formation and rupture using threefold and fourfold oxygen vacancies are demonstrated through cohesive energy, electron localization function, and band structure. Cohesive energy analysis confirms the cohesive nature of neutral oxygen vacancies while the isolated behavior for +2 charged oxygen vacancies in the CF. In addition, nudged elastic band calculation is also performed to analyze the oxygen vacancy diffusion energy under different paths. Moreover, we have computed the diffusion coefficient and drift velocity of oxygen vacancies to understand the CF. This DFT study described detailed insight into filamentary type resistive switching observed in the experimentally fabricated device. Therefore, this fundamental study provides the platform to explore the switching mechanism of other oxide materials used for memristor device application.

RESUMO

Background and Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) followed by lipiodol infusion in advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with portal vein tumor thrombus (PVTT). Materials and Methods: Thirty-two patients with advanced HCC and PVTT who received HAIC with regimens of cisplatin, mitomycin-C, and 5-fluorouracil followed by lipiodol infusion were enrolled. The primary efficacy endpoint was tumor response rate. The modified Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (mRECIST) was used for assessment of treatment response. The secondary endpoints were overall survival (OS) and progression free survival (PFS). Prognostic factors for survival also were evaluated. Results: The median OS and PFS were 11.9 and 9.5 months, respectively. Seventeen patients (53.1%) achieved objective response, and 23 patients (71.9%) achieved disease control. The length of survival in the responder and disease control groups was longer than in the non-responder and progressive disease groups after two cycles of HAIC (responder vs. non-responder: 16.5 vs. 7.9 months, p = 0.001; disease control vs. progressive disease: 12.3 vs. 5.6 months, p < 0.001) and after completing HAIC (responder vs. non-responder: 15.7 vs. 6.9 months, p = 0.001; disease control vs. progressive disease: 13.6 vs. 6.9 months, p < 0.001). Better survival was associated with Child-Pugh A liver function (p = 0.013), with early response to two HAIC cycles (p = 0.009), and with response (p = 0.02) and disease control (p = 0.001) after completing HAIC treatment. Conclusion: HAIC followed by lipiodol infusion is a safe and feasible treatment for advanced HCC with PVTT. Patients with early response could continue HAIC treatment with expected prolonged survival.

RESUMO

K2CO3-mediated one-pot tandem conversion from sulfonyl 2-pyridyl flavanones to dipyridyl dispirocyclohexanes with contiguous multiple stereogenic centers was accomplished in good yields via an intramolecular desulfonylative ring-contraction of sulfonyl 2-pyridyl flavanones followed by an intermolecular Michael-Michael-aldol (2 + 2 + 2) annulation of the resulting pyridyl aurone intermediate with methyl ketones under facile, open-vessel, inexpensive and environmentally friendly reaction conditions. A plausible mechanism is proposed and discussed herein. This protocol provides a highly effective ring-closure via three carbon-carbon (C-C) bond formation.

RESUMO

Monolayer black phosphorous (BP) is a commonly used semiconducting two-dimensional material, thanks to its unique electronic properties of an atomically thin two-dimensional layered structure and its ability to be applied in a novel nanoscale metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect device. In this paper, we focus on a new compact band structure model and apply it to electron mobility calculations for monolayer BP. We propose a new compact band model based on an effective mass approximation considering a second-order non-parabolic correction to calculate the band structure, density of states, velocity squared, and other physical quantities of monolayer BP. Electron mobility using the Kubo-Greenwood formula is calculated based on the new corrected compact band model. Our new compact band model is very useful to TCAD simulation and design of future transistor devices with monolayer BP.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate the safety and feasibility of laparoscopic adrenalectomy for benign adrenal tumor without peri-operative NGT decompression. METHODS: From July 2010 to March 2014, 82 consecutive patients with benign unilateral adrenal tumor underwent elective laparoscopic adrenalectomy by a single surgeon were recruited for this study. We compared the clinico-demographic profile, estimated blood loss, operative time, time to full diet, time to ambulate, the length of hospital staying, analgesics use and complications between two groups stratified by the use of NGT. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in the clinico-demographic profile of the two groups, including age, laterality, body mass index, gender, ASA classification, tumor diameter and histologic types between two groups. Peri-operative parameters were similar between NGT and Non-NGT groups (estimated blood loss, 55.85 vs. 54.4 ml; operative time, 110.3 vs. 112.3 min; p > 0.05) The post-operative outcome of interests, including days to full oral intake (3.32 vs. 3.34 days), days to ambulate (2.07 vs. 2.10 days), hospital stay (4.32 vs. 4.34 days), and analgesics use (6.00 vs. 5.83 mg; all p > 0.05) showed no significant difference between NGT and non-NGT group. CONCLUSION: Laparoscopic adrenalectomy in patients with benign unilateral adrenal tumor without the use of peri-operative nasogastric tube decompression is safe and feasible.

RESUMO

The preparation of sub 3 nm copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) in ethylene glycol (EG) using triethylene tetramine (TETA) as chelating and reducing agents via a rapid microwave (MW) irradiation is reported. The sub 3 nm CuNPs after MW irradiation are clearly seen from the electronic micrographs. The firm chelation of Cu2+ by TETA is illustrated by the dark blue color of Cu2+/TETA/EG solution and the redox reaction is confirmed by the appearance of red color of the mixtures. The optimal mole ratio of TETA/Cu 2+ is found to be 2.5/1 for preparing sub 3 nm CuNPs under the MW irradiation, operated at 800 W for 1 min. The plasmonic absorption λ max demonstrated in UV-vis spectra are found to close to 200 nm for sub 3 nm CuNPs, comparing to 500 âˆ¼ 600 nm for regular, larger CuNPs. The extremely low Tm around 30 °C and the fusion/recrystallization sequence of sub 3 nm CuNPs can be directly measured by their differential scanning calorimetry thermograms.

RESUMO

In this paper, we investigate the negative-capacitance fin field-effect (NC-FinFET) and extend the design beyond the 7-nm technology node. A 7-nm-node NC-FinFET is presented using the Landau-Khalatnikov equation and the physical equations of a 3D technology computer-aided design simulation. We propose a new NC-FinFET with double ferroelectric hafnium zircon dioxide layers. This device exhibits noticeable voltage gains in the sub-threshold region, can decrease subthreshold swing (SS) effectively, has a wide-ranged uniform SS lower than 60 mV/dec, and can downscale the threshold voltage without increasing the off current. The static noise margin of the static random access memory using the new NC-FinFET is simulated and shows good performance with improved SS and threshold voltage.

RESUMO

InAlN/Al/GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) directly on Si with dynamic threshold voltage for steep subthreshold slope (<60 mV/dec) are demonstrated in this study, and attributed to displacement charge transition effects. The material analysis with High-Resolution X-ray Diffraction (HR-XRD) and the relaxation by reciprocal space mapping (RSM) are performed to confirm indium barrier composition and epitaxy quality. The proposed InAlN barrier HEMTs exhibits high ON/OFF ratio with seven magnitudes and a steep threshold swing (SS) is also obtained with SS = 99 mV/dec for forward sweep and SS = 28 mV/dec for reverse sweep. For GaN-based HEMT directly on Si, this study displays outstanding performance with high ON/OFF ratio and SS < 60 mV/dec behaviors.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The effects of the mode of anesthesia on major adverse postoperative outcomes in geriatric patients are still inconclusive. The authors hypothesized that a neuraxial anesthetic (NA) rather than a general anesthetic (GA) would yield better in-hospital postoperative outcomes for geriatric patients undergoing hip surgery. METHODS: The authors used data from Taiwan's 1997-2011 in-patient claims database to evaluate the effect of anesthesia on in-hospital outcomes. The endpoints were mortality, stroke, transient ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, respiratory failure, and renal failure. Of the 182,307 geriatric patients who had hip surgery, a GA was given to 53,425 (29.30%) and an NA to 128,882 (70.70%). To adjust for baseline differences and selection bias, patients were matched on propensity scores, which left 52,044 GA and 52,044 NA patients. RESULTS: GA-group patients had a greater percentage and higher odds of adverse in-hospital outcomes than did NA-group patients: death (2.62 vs. 2.13%; odds ratio [OR], 1.24; 95% CI, 1.15 to 1.35; P < 0.001), stroke (1.61 vs. 1.38%; OR, 1.18, 95% CI, 1.07 to 1.31; P = 0.001), respiratory failure (1.67 vs. 0.63%; OR, 2.71; 95% CI, 2.38 to 3.01; P < 0.001), and intensive care unit admission (11.03 vs. 6.16%; OR, 1.95; 95% CI, 1.87 to 2.05; P < 0.001), analyzed using conditional logistic regression. Moreover, patients given a GA had longer hospital stays (10.77 ± 8.23 vs. 10.44 ± 6.67 days; 95% CI, 0.22 to 0.40; P < 0.001) and higher costs (New Taiwan Dollars [NT$] 86,606 ± NT$74,162 vs. NT$74,494 ± NT$45,264; 95% CI, 11,366 to 12,859; P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: For geriatric patients undergoing hip surgery, NA was associated with fewer odds of adverse outcomes than GA.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The epidemiologic profile of ethnic Chinese patients with Dupuytren's disease is unknown. We therefore investigated the epidemiology of Dupuytren's disease using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. METHODS: Patients who filed claims for treatment for Dupuytren's disease between January 2000 and December 2011 were identified in the database. Age- and gender-specific incidences were estimated by dividing the incidence number by population data. RESULTS: We identified 1,078 patients with Dupuytren's disease (681 men, 397 women; male/female ratio: 1:1.72). The annual incidence rate ranged from 0.39-0.63/10(5) for men and 0.14-0.44/10(5) for women. A trend analysis revealed a rising trend in the annual incidence from 2001 to 2011 (p = 0.0199). The prevalence rate increased steadily from 0.46/10(5) in 2000 to 4.52/10(5) in 2011 (p = 0.0186). The mean age at onset was significantly higher in men than in women (60.7 ± 18.4 vs. 53.7 ± 15.5 years). Peak age at onset for men was 70-79 (28.1%) and for women was 50-59 (33.5%). Men > 60 years old had higher incidence rates than did women (incidence rate ratios: 2.0, 4.5, and 6.6 for those 60-69, 70-79, and ≥ 80, respectively). Hypertension (29.6%), diabetes mellitus (21.9%), hyperlipidemia (14.8%), ischemic heart disease (10.5%), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (8.0%) were the most common comorbidities. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence and prevalence of Dupuytren's disease and the male/female ratio were significantly lower in ethnic Chinese than in Western ethnic groups. Moreover, the age at onset was significantly lower in ethnic Chinese women. However, the incidences of three comorbidities (hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and hyperlipidemia) were similar to those in other ethnicities.

RESUMO

Physical reservoirs employed to map time-series data and analyze extracted features have attracted interest owing to their low training cost and mitigated interconnection complexity. This study reports a physical reservoir based on a bilayer oxide-based dynamic memristor. The proposed device exhibits a nonlinear current response and short-term memory (STM), satisfying the requirements of reservoir computing (RC). These characteristics are validated using a compact model to account for resistive switching (RS) via the dynamic evolution of the internal state variable and the relocation of oxygen vacancies. Mathematically, the transient current response can be quantitatively described according to a simple set of equations to correlate the theoretical framework with experimental results. Furthermore, the device shows significant reliability and ability to distinguish 4-bit inputs and four diverse neural firing patterns. Therefore, this work shows the feasibility of implementing physical reservoirs in hardware and advances the understanding of the dynamic response.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The clinical and radiologic outcomes of the Oxford Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty utilizing Microplasty® instrumentation have not been extensively investigated in Taiwanese patients. Despite the efficacy of this treatment for unicompartmental knee diseases, its specific impact on this population remains unknown. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed prospectively collected data of patients who underwent OUKA with MP between 2018 and 2021, including demographic information, component position, pre- and postoperative knee range of motion (ROM), numeric rating scale (NRS), and 2011 Knee Society Score-functional activity score (2011 KSS-FAS). We compared pre- and postoperative data and analyzed the correlation between clinical and radiographic outcomes. RESULTS: Among 140 patients with an average age of 66.8 years, predominantly female, the majority exhibited components that fell within the radiographically acceptable tolerance ranges. The mean 2.5-year follow-up revealed significant improvements in knee ROM from 102.6° ± 12.9° to 127.3° ± 9.8° (p < 0.05), pain reduction from 7.7 ± 0.8 to 0.4 ± 0.7 (p < 0.001), and KSS-FAS from 30.7 ± 10.5 to 94.3 ± 5.2 (p < 0.001). Notably, a tibial component medial overhang within tolerance predicted shorter hospital stays, and a higher preoperative KSS correlated with lower postoperative NRS. No independent variables were identified as predictors of a higher postoperative KSS. CONCLUSION: Our study on OUKA with MP in Taiwanese patients reveals promising early clinical and radiographic outcomes. Tibial component medial overhang <3 mm is associated with shorter hospital stays, and a higher preoperative KSS predicts lower NRS at 1 year postoperatively.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the effects of gender on the three-dimensional (3D) bone mineral density (BMD) and micromorphology of the trabeculae of matured autogenous bone grafts after sinus floor augmentation, and compared them to those of adjacent native bone. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten bone biopsy samples were removed from the implant placement areas of patients who had received second-stage sinus floor augmentation, and analyzed by microcomputed tomography. BMD phantoms with two calcium hydroxyapatite densities (0.25 and 0.75 g/cm(3)) were used to determine the BMD of the grafted and native bone samples. The 3D structural parameters of the trabeculae, including percentage of bone volume (bone volume/tissue volume, BV/TV), trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), trabecular number, trabecular separation, trabecular pattern factor (Tb.Pf), and structure model index, were analyzed between males and females and between grafted bone and native bone. RESULTS: No significant gender-specific differences in BMD and 3D trabecular structure of either native or grafted bone were found (P > 0.05). Compared to the adjacent native bone, the autogenous grafted bone exhibited lower BV/TV and Tb.Th as well as a higher Tb.Pf (P < 0.05). Additionally, there was a weak positive correlation between the Tb.Th values of grafted and native bone (R (2) = 0.58). CONCLUSIONS: In the maxillary sinus, autogenous grafted bone exhibited lower BV/TV, Tb.Th, and trabecular connectivity than the adjacent native bone. No significant gender-specific differences were found for either the BMD or 3D trabecular structure of grafted bone. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: After bone remodeling, autogenous grafted bone revealed different 3D trabecular structure as compared to native bone.

RESUMO

In this study, the present research describes a high-yield method for the synthesis of sulfonyl 2-aryl-5-methylenetetrahydropyrans by one-pot straightforward DABCO-promoted intramolecular Michael addition of ß-sulfonyl styrene with 2-chloromethyl-1-propenol followed by intramolecular alkylation. This Baylis-Hillman-type pathway provides a highly effective stereoselective annulation by forming one carbon-oxygen bond and one carbon-carbon bond.

RESUMO

Neuromorphic computing, inspired by the biological neuronal system, is a high potential approach to substantially alleviate the cost of computational latency and energy for massive data processing. Artificial synapses with regulable synaptic weights are the basis of neuromorphic computation, providing an efficient and low-power system to overcome the constraints of the von Neumann architecture. Here, we report an ITO/TaOx-based synaptic capacitor and transistor. With the drift motion of mobile-charged ions in the TaOx, the capacitance and channel conductance can be tuned to exhibit synaptic weight modulation. Robust stability in the cycle-to-cycle (C2C) variation is found in capacitance and conductance potentiation/depression weight updating of 0.9 and 1.8%, respectively. Simulation results show a higher classification accuracy of handwritten digit recognition (95%) in capacitance synapses than that in conductance synapses (84%). Besides, the synaptic capacitor consumes much less energy than the synaptic transistor. Moreover, the ITO/TaOx-based capacitor successfully emulates the pain-perceptual sensitization on top of the superior performance, indicating its promising potential in applying the capacitive neural network.
