RESUMO

Although the gut microbiota can influence central nervous system (CNS) autoimmune diseases, the contribution of the intestinal epithelium to CNS autoimmunity is less clear. Here, we showed that intestinal epithelial dopamine D2 receptors (IEC DRD2) promoted sex-specific disease progression in an animal model of multiple sclerosis. Female mice lacking Drd2 selectively in intestinal epithelial cells showed a blunted inflammatory response in the CNS and reduced disease progression. In contrast, overexpression or activation of IEC DRD2 by phenylethylamine administration exacerbated disease severity. This was accompanied by altered lysozyme expression and gut microbiota composition, including reduced abundance of Lactobacillus species. Furthermore, treatment with N2-acetyl-L-lysine, a metabolite derived from Lactobacillus, suppressed microglial activation and neurodegeneration. Taken together, our study indicates that IEC DRD2 hyperactivity impacts gut microbial abundances and increases susceptibility to CNS autoimmune diseases in a female-biased manner, opening up future avenues for sex-specific interventions of CNS autoimmune diseases.

RESUMO

Arsenic is a naturally occurring metalloid and one of the few metals that can be metabolized inside the human body. The pervasive presence of arsenic in nature and anthropogenic sources from agricultural and medical use have perpetuated human exposure to this toxic and carcinogenic element. Highly exposed individuals are susceptible to various illnesses, including skin disorders; cognitive impairment; and cancers of the lung, liver, and kidneys. In fact, across the globe, approximately 200 million people are exposed to potentially toxic levels of arsenic, which has prompted substantial research and mitigation efforts to combat this extensive public health issue. This review provides an up-to-date look at arsenic-related challenges facing the global community, including current sources of arsenic, global disease burden, arsenic resistance, and shortcomings of ongoing mitigation measures, and discusses potential next steps.

RESUMO

Apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease 1 (APE1), as a vital base excision repair enzyme, is essential for maintaining genomic integrity and stability, and its abnormal expression is closely associated with malignant tumors. Herein, we constructed an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor for detecting APE1 activity by combining nanoconfined ECL silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs) with X-shaped DNA recognizer-triggered cascade amplification. Specifically, the Ag NCs were prepared and confined in the glutaraldehyde-cross-linked chitosan hydrogel network using the one-pot method, resulting in a strong ECL response and exceptional stability in comparison with discrete Ag NCs. Furthermore, the self-assembled X-shaped DNA recognizers were designed for APE1 detection, which not only improved reaction kinetics due to the ordered arrangement of recognition sites but also achieved high sensitivity by utilizing the recognizer-triggered cascade amplification of strand displacement amplification (SDA) and DNAzyme catalysis. As expected, this biosensor achieved sensitive ECL detection of APE1 in the range of 1.0 × 10-3 U·µL-1 to 1.0 × 10-10 U·µL-1 with the detection limit of 2.21 × 10-11 U·µL-1, rendering it a desirable approach for biomarker detection.

RESUMO

The incidence and mortality rates of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) have been significantly increasing in China. Indole-3-carbinol (I3C), a naturally occurring component in cruciferous vegetables, is an effective cancer therapy. Yet, its effect and action mechanism in ESCC are still not fully understood. This study explored the role of I3C in ESCC in vitro and in vivo by focusing on the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway. MTT and flow cytometry were used to assess cell viability and apoptosis in EC18 and TE1 cells, while wound healing and transwell assays were used to investigate cell migration and invasion in vitro. Expression of ß-catenin, c-myc, and cyclin D1 was determined by Western blot; LiCl (an agonist of the canonical Wnt signaling that inhibits GSK3ß activity) was used to assess the role of I3C on the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway. For in vivo experiments, nude BALB/c mice bearing EC18 xenografts were treated with I3C and/or LiCl. I3C promoted ESCC apoptosis and inhibited cell migration and invasion by downregulating ß-catenin, c-myc, and cyclin D1 in vitro and decreased the tumor growth in vivo; this process was reversed by LiCl treatment. In summary, I3C inhibits ESCC malignant behavior by suppressing the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway, thus deeming it a promising drug for ESCC treatment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Pickled mustard, the largest cultivated vegetable in China, generates substantial waste annually, leading to significant environmental pollution due to challenges in timely disposal, leading to decomposition and sewage issues. Consequently, the imperative to address this concern centers on the reduction and comprehensive resource utilization of raw mustard waste (RMW). To achieve complete and quantitative resource utilization of RMW, this study employs novel technology integration for optimizing its higher-value applications. RESULTS: Initially, subcritical hydrothermal technology was applied for rapid decomposition, with subsequent ammonia nitrogen removal via zeolite. Thereafter, photosynthetic bacteria, Rhodopseudomonas palustris, were employed to maximize hydrogen and methane gas production using various fermentation enhancement agents. Subsequent solid-liquid separation yielded liquid fertilizer from the fermented liquid and soil amendment from solid fermentation remnants. Results indicate that the highest glucose yield (29.6 ± 0.14) was achieved at 165-173℃, with a total sugar content of 50.2 g/L and 64% glucose proportion. Optimal ammonia nitrogen removal occurred with 8 g/L zeolite and strain stable growth at 32℃, with the highest OD600 reaching 2.7. Several fermentation promoters, including FeSO4, Neutral red, Na2S, flavin mononucleotide, Nickel titanate, Nickel oxide, and Mixture C, were evaluated for hydrogen production. Notably, Mixture C resulted in the maximum hydrogen production (756 mL), a production rate of 14 mL/h, and a 5-day stable hydrogen production period. Composting experiments enhanced humic acid content and organic matter (OM) by 17% and 15%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This innovative technology not only expedites RMW treatment and hydrogen yield but also substantially enriches soil fertility. Consequently, it offers a novel approach for low-carbon, zero-pollution RMW management. The study's double outcomes extend to large-scale RMW treatment based on the aim of full quantitative resource utilization of RMW. Our method provides a valuable reference for waste management in similar perishable vegetable plantations.

RESUMO

The exploration of new rare-earth (RE)-based triangular-lattice materials plays a significant role in motivating the discovery of exotic magnetic states. Herein, we report a family of hexagonal perovskite compounds Ba6RE2Ti4O17 (RE = Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy-Yb) with a space group of P63/mmc, where magnetic RE3+ ions are distributed on the parallel triangular-lattice layers within the ab-plane and stacked in an 'AA'-type fashion along the c-axis. The low-temperature magnetic characterizations indicate that all synthesized Ba6RE2Ti4O17 compounds exhibit dominant antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions and the absence of magnetic order down to 1.8 K. The isothermal magnetization and electron spin resonance results reveal the distinct magnetic anisotropy for the compounds with different RE ions. Moreover, the as-grown Ba6Nd2Ti4O17 single crystals exhibit Ising-like magnetic anisotropy with a magnetic easy-axis perpendicular to the triangle-lattice plane and no long-range magnetic order down to 80 mK, as the quantum spin liquid candidate with dominant Ising-type interactions.

RESUMO

A hierarchical sea urchin-like hybrid metal oxide nanostructure of ZnO nanorods deposited on TiO2porous hollow hemispheres with a thin zinc titanate interface layer is specifically designed and synthesized to form a combined type I straddling and type II staggered junctions. The HHSs, synthesized by electrospinning, facilitate light trapping and scattering. The ZnO nanorods offer a large surface area for improved surface oxidation kinetics. The interface layer of zinc titanate (ZnTiO3) between the TiO2HHSs and ZnO nanorods regulates the charge separation in a closely coupled hierarchy structure of ZnO/ZnTiO3/TiO2. The synergistic effects of the improved light trapping, charge separation, and fast surface reaction kinetics result in a superior photoconversion efficiency of 1.07% for the photoelectrochemical water splitting with an outstanding photocurrent density of 2.8 mA cm-2at 1.23 V versus RHE.

RESUMO

The cyclization reactions of keto-hydroperoxide (KHP) radicals leading to the formation of keto cyclic ethers and OH radicals play an important role in low temperature combustion for hydrocarbon fuels or oxygenated hydrocarbon fuels. However, due to the lack of kinetic data of cyclization reactions of KHP radicals, researchers often derive high-pressure-limit rate constants of cyclization reactions of KHP radicals from analogous cyclization reactions of hydroperoxyl alkyl radicals during construction of the combustion mechanism. This study aims to systematically investigate the kinetics of cyclization reactions of KHP radicals involving short-to-large-sized radicals. The studied reactions are divided into 7 reaction classes, according to the size of the cyclic transition state, the conjugative effect (whether KHP radicals are resonance-stabilized or not), and the position of the carbonyl group (whether the carbonyl group is inside or outside of the reaction center). The isodesmic reaction method, in conjunction with transition state theory, is utilized for each reaction class to compute the energy barriers and high-pressure-limit rate constants at the DFT level. The study revealed that energy barriers calculated at the DFT level with correction by the isodesmic reaction method are close to the results from the benchmark CCSD(T) method. To develop more accurate rate rules, these reaction classes are further divided into subclasses based on the relative site of the OOH group with the carbonyl group, the type of carbon atoms where the OOH group is located, and the type of carbon atoms where the radical site is located. For each subclass, high-pressure-limit rate rules are derived by averaging the rate constants of reactions in the subclass, and it is found that the maximum absolute deviation of the energy barrier and the ratio of the largest rate constant to the smallest rate constant among reactions in each subclass are within chemical accuracy limits, indicating acceptable use of the developed rate rules. A comparison of the rate constants for cyclization reactions of KHP radicals with the values of analogous cyclization reactions of hydroperoxyalkyl radicals as provided in reported mechanisms is made. Additionally, a comparison is drawn between our developed rate rules for subclasses of the cyclization reactions of KHP radicals and the rate rules for analogous subclasses of cyclization reactions of hydroperoxyl alkyl radicals. These comparisons demonstrate significant differences and highlight the necessity for improved rate rules for cyclization reactions of KHP radicals to enhance the automatically generated combustion mechanisms for hydrocarbon and oxygenated hydrocarbon fuels.

RESUMO

Zonation is a typical pattern of soil distribution and species assembly across riparian habitats. Microorganisms are essential members of riparian ecosystems and whether soil microbial communities demonstrate similar zonation patterns and how bulk and rhizosphere soil microorganisms interact along the elevation (submergence stress) gradient remain largely unknown. In this study, bulk and rhizosphere (dominant plant) soil samples were collected and investigated across riparian zones where the submergence stress intensity increased as the elevation decreased. Results showed that the richness of bacterial communities in bulk and rhizosphere soil samples was significantly different and presented a zonation pattern along with the submergence stress gradient. Bulk soil at medium elevation that underwent moderate submergence stress had the most abundant bacterial communities, while the species richness of rhizobacteria at low elevation that experienced serious submergence stress was the highest. Additionally, principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) and significance tests showed that bulk and rhizosphere soil samples were distinguished according to the structure of bacterial communities, and so were bulk or rhizosphere soil samples from different elevations. Redundancy analysis (RDA) and Mantel test suggested that bacterial communities of bulk soil mainly relied on the contents of soil organic matter, total carbon (TC), total nitrogen (TN), sodium (Na), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg). Contrastingly, the contents of Na and Mg were the main factors explaining the variation in rhizobacterial community composition. Correlation and microbial source tracking analyses showed thatthe relationship of bulk and rhizosphere soil bacteria became much stronger, and the rhizosphere soil may get more bacterial communities from bulk soil with the increase in submergence severity. Our results suggest that the abiotic and biotic components of the riparian ecosystem are closely covariant along the submergence stress gradient and imply that the bacterial community may be a key node linking soil physiochemical properties and vegetation communities.

RESUMO

Radiotherapy (RT) is one of the important treatment modalities for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the maximum radiation dose that NSCLC patient can receive varies little. Therefore, the exploitation of novel RT sensitization approaches is a critical need for the clinical treatment. RT resistance in NSCLC is linked to tumor microenvironment (TME) hypoxia, cell cycle arrest and associated genetic alterations. Here, we designed a novel method for targeted delivery of quercetin (QT) and CeO2 to enhance RT sensitivity. We loaded QT into CeO2@ZIF-8-HA nanoparticles to prevent its degradation in the circulatory system and successfully delivered QT and CeO2 targeted to NSCLC tumors. Under the protection and targeted delivery of Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8), the nanocomplexes exhibited excellent catalytic mimetic activity in decomposing H2O2 into O2, thus significantly reversing the hypoxia of TME, while the radiosensitizer QT caused DNA damage directly after RT. In a subcutaneous tumor model, CeO2@ZIF-8-HA overcame radiation resistance and enhanced therapeutic efficacy. This multiple sensitization strategy combining delivery of QT and CeO2@ZIF-8-HA nanozymes opens a promising approach for RT of NSCLC.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the emergence of immunotherapy has renewed therapeutic modality. Different from traditional anti-tumor therapy, immune-related adverse events of skin, gastrointestinal tract, liver, lung, endocrine glands commonly occurred. At present, only one case of immune-related adverse event of Behcet's-like syndrome following pembrolizumab treatment was reported in USA, and no one is reported in China. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report a rare case of Behcet's-like symptom following pembrolizumab treatment. A 43-year-old female was diagnosed as lymph node and bone metastasis of adenocarcinoma with unknown primary lesion, probably being of pulmonary origin. She was treated with pembrolizumab 200 mg every three weeks in combination with chemotherapy for 6 cycles, followed by pembrolizumab monotherapy maintenance. However, she developed Behcet's-like syndrome with oral ulcer, genital uler, phlebitis, and vision loss after 9 cycles of pembrolizumab treatment. She was treated with prednisone 5 mg orally three times a day. Two weeks later, dose of glucocorticoid gaven to the patient gradually decreased with improved symptoms. After a treatment-free withdrawal period, the patient requested to continue pembrolizumab treatment. Unfortunately, the above symptoms recurred on the second day following pembrolizumab treatment, and glucocorticoid was taken once again. The symptoms improved and the condition was under control. CONCLUSIONS: In view of the exponential growth of immunocheckpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in a variety of tumors, we should be alert to related adverse events, especially the rare rheumatic manifestations.

RESUMO

Polygonum cuspidatum (PC) extract has been listed in the "Catalog of Used Cosmetic Ingredients (2021 Edition)", which can inhibit melanogenesis, thus exerting a whitening effect, and has been widely used in cosmetics. However, there are currently no quality standards for PC extract used in cosmetics, and the bioactive components associated with anti-melanogenesis remain unclear. In view of this, the present study was the first to investigate the spectrum-effect relationship between fingerprints of PC extract and melanogenesis inhibition. Ten batches of PC extract fingerprints were established by HPLC. Pearson's correlation analysis, gray correlation analysis (GRA) and orthogonal partial least squares regression analysis (OPLSR) were used to screen out resveratrol, emodin and physcion as the main whitening active ingredients using the inhibition of tyrosinase in B16F10 cells as the pharmacological index. Then, the melanogenesis inhibitory effects of the above three components were verified by tyrosinase inhibition and a melanin content assay in B16F10 cells. The interaction between small molecules and proteins was investigated by the molecular docking method, and it was confirmed by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) that resveratrol, emodin and physcion significantly down-regulated the transcript levels of melanogenesis-related factors. In conclusion, this study established a general model combining HPLC fingerprinting and melanogenesis inhibition and also analyzed the spectrum-effect relationship of PC extract, which provided theoretical support for the quality control of PC extract in whitening cosmetics.

RESUMO

High cadmium (Cd) concentrations widely occured in selenium (Se)-rich soils, which has been an important obstacle in the usage of Se-rich soils. There is still no special information detailing the enrichment process and mechanism of Cd in Se-rich soils. 4474 soils and 21 rocks in Lanshan District were sampled to detect its enrichment process. The surface soils have Cd concentrations of 0.01-9.41 mg·kg-1 (an average of 0.16 mg·kg-1). The soil Cd concentrations were significantly correlated with soil Se concentrations. The relatively higher-Cd surface soils are distributed in Lower-middle Ordovician carbonate areas with Se-rich soils and Quaternary areas with typical anthropic activities. Surface soils in Ordovician carbonate area have the highest Cd concentrations. Soil Cd concentrations are significantly correlated with sulfophil elements (Zinc (Zn), Copper (Cu), Molybdenum (Mo), Lead (Pb) and Arsenic (As) etc.), Ca (Calcium) concentrations and soil organic carbon (SOC). The soil and rock samples from different geological units also confirmed soil Cd concentrations developing from Ordovician carbonates were higher than those from other rocks. The results indicate the soil Cd concentrations were the complex consequences of bedrock, soil-forming processes and anthropogenic activities. Higher Ca concentrations and more reduction environments result in high-Cd bedrock. CaCO3 leaching and alkaline pH, which are the special soil-forming process of carbonates, enrich Cd in soils. Agricultural and industrial activities also affect soil Cd concentrations. An enrichment model of Cd in Se-rich soils is forwarded.

RESUMO

Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) operating in liquid can detect not only liquid mechanical properties (liquid density and viscosity) but also liquid electrical properties (liquid dielectric constant and conductivity). However, the relevant research so far has mainly focused on the liquid conductive property and mostly used relative values, which cannot fully reflect the response of QCM to liquid electrical properties. To study the effect of the electrical field scattering on the QCM response to liquid electrical properties and whether there is a coupling between the mechanical, dielectric, and conductive properties, reference groups for excluding the liquid mechanical effect were set up; solutions (isopropanol/water) with different dielectric constants and conductivities were adopted; static capacitance of the QCM covered with the isopropanol/water solutions was measured. The results indicate that the electrical field scattering plays an important role in the sensitivity of QCM to the dielectric property of liquid. There may be no, or very little, coupling between mechanical and electrical properties, but there is a coupling between dielectric and conductive properties at low conductivity, while at high conductivity, the conductive property is the dominant factor. The results are meaningful for understanding the multi-property sensing of QCM in the liquid phase.

RESUMO

A nonplanar phenothiazine derivative with three cyano moieties (PTTCN) is designed and synthesized to achieve functional crystals for absorptive separation of benzene and cyclohexane. PTTCN can crystallize into two kinds of crystals with different fluorescence colors in different solvent systems. The molecules in two crystals are in different stereo isomeric forms of nitrogen, quasi axial (ax), and quasi equatorial (eq). The crystals with blue fluorescence in ax form may selectively adsorb benzene by a single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformation, but separated benzene from a benzene/cyclohexane equimolar mixture with a low purity of 79.6%. Interestingly, PTTCN molecules with eq form and benzene co-assembled to construct a hydrogen-bonded framework (X-HOF-4) with S-type solvent channels and yellow-green fluorescence, and can release benzene to form nonporous guest-free crystal under heating. Such nonporous crystals strongly favor aromatic benzene over cyclohexane and may selectively reabsorb benzene from benzene/cyclohexane equimolar mixture to recover original framework, and the purity of benzene can reach ≈96.5% after release from framework. Moreover, reversible transformation between the nonporous crystals and the guest-containing crystals allows the material to be reused.

RESUMO

This work proposes an optimization algorithm in optical design based on the concepts of ergodic and stochastic processes in statistical mechanics. In mixed-variable optimization problems, pseudo-random number and discrete-to-continuous variable conversion dramatically increase the speed at which the system solves for the optimal solution. Pseudo-random numbers are mainly applied in two important steps in the optimization algorithm: determining the combination of glasses involved and the order in which the successive glass parameters are replaced by real glasses. After two series of stochastic processes, the merit function value decreases rapidly along the steepest descent path, and thus the optical system approaches the optimal solution within a very short duration of time. By using the method proposed in this paper, a plan apochromatic objective with a long working distance was optimized, and finally, a high-quality optical system was obtained.

RESUMO

Piglet diarrhea caused by the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is a common problem on pig farms in China associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. In this study, three PEDV isolates were successfully detected after the fourth blind passage in Vero cells. The samples were obtained from infected piglet farms in Jilin (Changchun), and Shandong (Qingdao) Provinces of China and were designated as CH/CC-1/2018, CH/CC-2/2018, and CH/QD/2018. According to the analysis of the complete S protein gene sequence, the CH/CC-1/2018 and CH/CC-2/2018 were allocated to the G2b branch, while CH/QD/2018 was located in the G1a interval and was closer to the vaccine strain CV777. Successful detection and identification of the isolated strains were carried out using electron microscopy and indirect immunofluorescence. Meanwhile, animal challenge experiments and viral RNA copies determination were used to compare the pathogenicity. The results showed that CH/CC-1/2018 in Changchun was more pathogenic than CH/QD/2018 in Qingdao. In conclusion, the discovery of these new strains is conducive to the development of vaccines to prevent the pandemic of PEDV, especially that the CH/CC-1/2018, and CH/CC-2/2018 were not related to the classical vaccine strain CV777.

RESUMO

Hypoxia-ischemia (HI) during crucial periods of brain formation can lead to changes in brain morphology, propagation of neuronal stimuli, and permanent neurodevelopmental impairment, which can have profound effects on cognitive function later in life. FAM3A, a subgroup of family with sequence similarity 3 (FAM3) gene family, is ubiquitously expressed in almost all cells. Overexpression of FAM3A has been evidenced to reduce hyperglycemia via the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway and protect mitochondrial function in neuronal HT22 cells. This study aims to evaluate the protective role of FAM3A in HI-induced brain impairment. Experimentally, maternal rats underwent uterine artery bilateral ligation to induce neonatal HI on day 14 of gestation. At 6 weeks of age, cognitive development assessments including NSS, wire grip, and water maze were carried out. The animals were then sacrificed to assess cerebral mitochondrial function as well as levels of FAM3A, TNF-α and IFN-γ. Results suggest that HI significantly reduced FAM3A expression in rat brain tissues, and that overexpression of FAM3A through lentiviral transduction effectively improved cognitive and motor functions in HI rats as reflected by improved NSS evaluation, cerebral water content, limb strength, as well as spatial learning and memory. At the molecular level, overexpression of FAM3A was able to promote ATP production, balance mitochondrial membrane potential, and reduce levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IFN-γ. We conclude that FAM3A overexpression may have a protective effect on neuron morphology, cerebral mitochondrial as well as cognitive function. Created with Biorender.com.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Autistic traits (ATs) are frequently reported in children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This study aimed to examine ATs in children with ADHD from both behavioral and neuroimaging perspectives. METHODS: We used the Autism Spectrum Screening Questionnaire (ASSQ) to assess and define subjects with and without ATs. For behavioral analyses, 67 children with ADHD and ATs (ADHD + ATs), 105 children with ADHD but without ATs (ADHD - ATs), and 44 typically developing healthy controls without ATs (HC - ATs) were recruited. We collected resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data and analyzed the mean amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (mALFF) values (an approach used to depict different spontaneous brain activities) in a sub-sample. The imaging features that were shared between ATs and ADHD symptoms or that were unique to one or the other set of symptoms were illustrated as a way to explore the "brain-behavior" relationship. RESULTS: Compared to ADHD-ATs, the ADHD + ATs group showed more global impairment in all aspects of autistic symptoms and higher hyperactivity/impulsivity (HI). Partial-correlation analysis indicated that HI was significantly positively correlated with all aspects of ATs in ADHD. Imaging analyses indicated that mALFF values in the left middle occipital gyrus (MOG), left parietal lobe (PL)/precuneus, and left middle temporal gyrus (MTG) might be specifically related to ADHD, while those in the right MTG might be more closely associated with ATs. Furthermore, altered mALFF in the right PL/precuneus correlated with both ADHD and ATs, albeit in diverse directions. CONCLUSIONS: The co-occurrence of ATs in children with ADHD manifested as different behavioral characteristics and specific brain functional alterations. Assessing ATs in children with ADHD could help us understand the heterogeneity of ADHD, further explore its pathogenesis, and promote clinical interventions.

RESUMO

In the field of recycling CO2, the photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a typical example, and researchers have designed a variety of photocatalysts to improve the conversion rate of CO2 over the years. In this paper, two metal-oxygen clusters are designed and formulated as [Co3Zn(OH)6(SO4)]·4H2O (1) and [Ni3Zn(OH)6(SO4)]·4H2O (2). As for compound 1, the main structure is composed of {CoO6} octahedra connected by edge-sharing to form a two-dimensional layer, on which {ZnO4} and {SO4} tetrahedra are supported. More interestingly, compound 1 has outstanding photocatalytic activity, which is mainly attributed to the open-framework structure and the cobalt ions as active sites. Upon catalysis for eight hours, its maximum CO generation rate is 9982.13 µmol g-1 h-1, with a selectivity of 81.8%. Additionally, compound 1 takes on weak antiferromagnetic coupling due to Co(II) ions.
