PURPOSE: Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) often results in impaired functional hearing and accidental injuries; thus, reducing military performance and endangering flight safety. While a few studies addressing laterality (left-right ear differences) and NIHL incidence between fixed-winged (jet-fighter) and rotary-wing (helicopter) aircrafts yielded inconsistent results, little is known about the NIHL profile among different types of jet-fighter pilots. This study aims to conduct a fine-grained examination of NIHL among Airforce jet pilots, with planned comparisons of laterality and aircraft type, along with the goal to compare the sensitivity of different hearing indices in predicting military pilot NIHL. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study utilizes the health and hearing data of 1025 Taiwanese Air Force Military pilots from the 2019 Taiwanese physical examination database to assess the changes in their hearing thresholds, and evaluate their risk for NIHL. RESULTS: Our results showed that, among available military aircraft types, the trainer aircraft and M2000-5 jet-fighter had the highest risk of NIHL, in addition to a left ear inferiority found in the overall population of military pilots. Among the three hearing indices used in this study -the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) three-point hearing index, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) three-point hearing index, and the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery's (AAO-HNS) high-frequency three-point hearing index-, the OSHA the AAO-HNS were the most sensitive. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest a better noise protection for trainer and M2000-5 pilots, especially for the left ear, is warranted.

Differentiated thyroid carcinomas (DTCs), which have papillary and follicular types, are common endocrine malignancies worldwide. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are a particular type of cancer cells within bulk tumors involved in cancer initiation, drug resistance, and metastasis. Cells with high intracellular aldehyde hydrogenase (ALDH) activity are a population of CSCs in DTCs. Disulfiram (DSF), an ALDH inhibitor used for the treatment of alcoholism, reportedly targets CSCs in various cancers when combined with copper. This study reported for the first time that DSF/copper can inhibit the proliferation of papillary and follicular DTC lines. DSF/copper suppressed thyrosphere formation, indicating the inhibition of CSC activity. Molecular mechanisms of DSF/copper involved downregulating the expression of B lymphoma Mo-MLV insertion region 1 homolog (BMI1) and cell cycle-related proteins, including cyclin B2, cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) 2, and CDK4, in a dose-dependent manner. BMI1 overexpression diminished the inhibitory effect of DSF/copper in the thyrosphere formation of DTC cells. BMI1 knockdown by RNA interference in DTC cells also suppressed the self-renewal capability. DSF/copper could inhibit the nuclear localization and transcriptional activity of c-Myc and the binding of E2F1 to the BMI1 promoter. Overexpression of c-Myc or E2F1 further abolished the inhibitory effect of DSF/copper on BMI1 expression, suggesting that the suppression of c-Myc and E2F1 by DSF/copper was involved in the downregulation of BMI1 expression. In conclusion, DSF/copper targets CSCs in DTCs by inhibiting c-Myc- or E2F1-mediated BMI1 expression. Therefore, DSF is a potential therapeutic agent for future therapy in DTCs.

BACKGROUND: The protective effect of metformin against active tuberculosis (TB) among TB close contacts is unknown. METHODS: TB close contacts with diabetes mellitus (DM) and normal renal function were selected from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan. Metformin users were patients who received ≥90 cumulative defined daily doses within 1 year before the index date. For each metformin user, a propensity-score matched metformin nonuser and an age- and sex-matched healthy TB close contact were selected. The outcome was incident TB, identified using previously validated diagnostic criteria. Independent predictors were investigated using stratified Cox regression analysis. Interaction analysis was also performed. RESULTS: A total of 5846 TB close contacts who were metformin users, metformin non-users, and healthy contacts were analysed. The incidence of active TB was 755 (600-938), 1117 (927-1335), and 526 (393-689) cases per 100,000 person-years in each group, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that healthy contacts had the lowest risk of developing active TB (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR]: 0.42 [0.30-0.60]) and metformin use partially reversed the risk associated with DM (aHR: 0.73 [0.54-0.98]). Subpopulation analysis revealed a significant interaction between insulin use and metformin use. CONCLUSIONS: Metformin use is associated with a lower risk of developing active TB among TB close contacts with DM, especially for insulin users. It may be an alternative choice for primary prevention against active TB if no contraindications exist. However, prospective studies are needed to confirm the findings.

Atorvastatin (ATO) inhibits the synthesis of nonsteroidal isoprenoid compounds and possesses a pleiotropic effect. However, the detailed mechanism of ATO in preventing gentamicin (GM)-induced renal injury remains obscure. Although underlying multifaceted mechanisms involving GM-induced nephrotoxicity were well known, further work on elucidating the essential mechanism was needed. Using a fluorogenic derivatization-liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry proteomic method (FD-LC-MS/MS method), we investigated the effects and mechanisms of ATO treatment on GM-induced nephrotoxicity in rats. Consequently, 49 differentially expressed proteins were identified. The most significant mechanisms of nephrotoxicity caused by GM were mitochondrial dysfunction, fatty acid metabolism and oxidative stress. Their upstream regulator was found to be PPARα. The proteins involved in GM nephrotoxicity were sodium-hydrogen exchanger regulatory factor (SLC9A3R1), cathepsin V (CTSV), macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) and RhoGDP dissociation inhibitor alpha (ARHGDIA). After ATO intervention, we observed a reversed enrichment pattern of their expression, especially in CTSV and SLC9A3R1 (P-value<0.05). We predicted that ATO may improve abnormal phospholipid metabolism and phospholipidosis caused by GM and also alleviate cell volume homeostasis and reverse the interference of GM with the transporter. Furthermore, proteomic results also provided clues as to GM-induced nephrotoxicity biomarkers such as CTSV and transthyretin.

Aristolochic acid (AA) causes interstitial renal fibrosis, called aristolochic acid nephropathy (AAN). There is no specific indicator for diagnosing AAN, so this study aimed to investigate the biomarkers for AAN using a proteomics method. The C3H/He female mice were given ad libitum AA-distilled water (0.5 mg/kg/day) and distilled water for 56 days in the AA and normal groups, respectively. The AA-induced proteins in the kidney were investigated using a proteomics study, including fluorogenic derivatization with 7-chloro-N-[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole-4-sulfonamide, followed by high-performance liquid chromatography analysis and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry with a MASCOT database searching system. There were two altered proteins, thrombospondin type 1 (TSP1) and G protein-coupled receptor 87 (GPR87), in the kidney of AA-group mice on day 56. GPR87, a tumorigenesis-related protein, is reported for the first time in the current study. The renal interstitial fibrosis was certainly induced in the AA-group mice under histological examination. Based on the results of histological examination and the proteomics study, this model might be applied to AAN studies in the future. TSP1 might be a novel biomarker for AAN, and the further role of GPR87 leading to AA-induced tumorigenesis should be researched in future studies.

Lead (Pb) is an environmental pollutant associated with several diseases, such as nephrotoxicity. Methylglyoxal (MG) is a reactive dicarbonyl compound formed during glycolysis and reported to increase in kidney damage. Metformin is used as an MG scavenger in the clinic. In this study, we investigated the mechanism of Pb-induced renal injury and the effect of metformin on Pb-induced nephrotoxicity. Eighteen Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups: control, Pb, and Pb + metformin groups. Pb (250 ppm) was administered in drinking water, and 50 mg/kg of metformin was co-administered orally. After 28 days, the levels of MG and its metabolite d-lactate in urine, serum and renal tissues were examined. The elevation of renal MG (56.86 ± 17.47 vs 36.40 ± 5.69, p < 0.01) and urinary d-lactate (0.68 ± 0.28 vs 0.32 ± 0.13, p < 0.01) was observed in Pb-exposed rats compared with those in control rats. After co-treatment with metformin, these phenomena were attenuated. In the present study, it was demonstrated for the first time that urinary d-lactate might serve as the candidate marker for Pb-induced nephrotoxicity in the clinic, and metformin might be a new therapeutic candidate for Pb poisoning.

UNLABELLED: The efficacy and safety of maternal tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) in reducing mother-to-infant hepatitis B virus (HBV) transmissions is not clearly understood. We conducted a prospective, multicenter trial and enrolled 118 hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)- and hepatitis B e antigen-positive pregnant women with HBV DNA ≥7.5 log10 IU/mL. The mothers received no medication (control group, n = 56, HBV DNA 8.22 ± 0.39 log10 IU/mL) or TDF 300 mg daily (TDF group, n = 62, HBV DNA 8.18 ± 0.47 log10 IU/mL) from 30-32 weeks of gestation until 1 month postpartum. Primary outcome was infant HBsAg at 6 months old. At delivery, the TDF group had lower maternal HBV DNA levels (4.29 ± 0.93 versus 8.10 ± 0.56 log10 IU/mL, P < 0.0001). Of the 121/123 newborns, the TDF group had lower rates of HBV DNA positivity at birth (6.15% versus 31.48%, P = 0.0003) and HBsAg positivity at 6 months old (1.54% versus 10.71%, P = 0.0481). Multivariate analysis revealed that the TDF group had lower risk (odds ratio = 0.10, P = 0.0434) and amniocentesis was associated with higher risk (odds ratio 6.82, P = 0.0220) of infant HBsAg positivity. The TDF group had less incidence of maternal alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels above two times the upper limit of normal for ≥3 months (3.23% versus 14.29%, P = 0.0455), a lesser extent of postpartum elevations of ALT (P = 0.007), and a lower rate of ALT over five times the upper limit of normal (1.64% versus 14.29%, P = 0.0135) at 2 months postpartum. Maternal creatinine and creatinine kinase levels, rates of congenital anomaly, premature birth, and growth parameters in infants were comparable in both groups. At 12 months, one TDF-group child newly developed HBsAg positivity, presumably due to postnatal infection and inefficient humoral responses to vaccines. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with TDF for highly viremic mothers decreased infant HBV DNA at birth and infant HBsAg positivity at 6 months and ameliorated maternal ALT elevations. Astragalus membranaceus, a traditional Chinese herb, has been used to improve airway inflammation and asthma. The present study investigated whether A. membranaceus has immunotherapeutic effects on asthma, a chronic inflammatory mucosal disease that is associated with excess production of IgE, eosinophilia, T helper 2 (Th2) cytokines, and bronchial hyperresponsiveness. An ovalbumin (OVA)-induced, chronic inflammatory airway murine asthma model was used to examine the status of pulmonary inflammation after the administration of A. membranaceus. The IgE levels in serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid showed a tendency to decrease after the administration of A. membranaceus. The number of eosinophils decreased and infiltration of inflammatory cells and collagen deposition declined in lung sections after A. membranaceus administration. The RNA and protein levels of Th2 cytokines and the ratio of the GATA3/T-bet mRNA levels decreased after A. membranaceus treatment. Furthermore, the mRNA level of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ), a nuclear hormone receptor, increased in the lung tissues of A. membranaceus-treated mice. Finally, an A. membranaceus water extract activated PPARγ activity in either human embryonic kidney 293 (HEK293) or A549 cells in a PPARγ-responsive element-containing luciferase reporter assay. These results indicate that A. membranaceus has an inhibitory effect on airway inflammation in a murine model of asthma through modulating the imbalanced relationship between Th1 and Th2 cytokines.

Water-cast nanocomposite films formed by poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and Laponite clay were found to display three characteristic levels of structure with large-scale orientation. The first level with the length scale of ca. 30-50 nm was the clay lamellar bundles, which tended to stack perpendicularly to the film surface. The second level with the characteristic length of 1.8 nm was associated with the alternating stacking of the silicate layers and the PEO chains sandwiched between them. The preferred orientations of these two levels of structure were independent of clay content, solvent removal rate for the film preparation, and the crystallization temperature of the PEO chains situating outside the clay bundles. The third level of structure was characterized by the preferred orientation of the PEO crystalline stems with respect to the surface of the silicate layers. Perpendicular orientation always dominated in the nanocomposite films prepared by slow solvent removal irrespective of crystallization temperature. In the films prepared by fast solvent removal, however, parallel crystal orientation set in as the clay concentration exceeded ca. 33 wt %. The preferred crystal orientation was ascribed to the confinement effect imposed by the clay bundles to the crystallization of the PEO chains situating in the interbundle region. In the films cast by slow solvent removal, the weaker confinement associated with the larger interbundle distance led to perpendicular crystal orientation. When the interbundle distance was reduced to ca. 30 nm in the films prepared by rapid solvent evaporation, the strong confinement directed the crystals to form parallel orientation.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that inflammatory processes play a role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Statins exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects and may be effective in improving the symptoms of schizophrenia. This study explored whether statins, as an adjunctive therapy, can alleviate the symptoms of schizophrenia. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library were searched for articles published up to March 2023. The risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials was used to assess study quality. Two researchers independently assessed the risks of bias and extracted data. Pooled data on Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) scores were analyzed. A random-effects model was employed to calculate pooled effect sizes. Statistical heterogeneity across studies was assessed using the I2 statistic. All analyses were performed using RevMan5 and Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software. RESULTS: Nine trials enrolling 533 patients in total were included. Add-on statin therapy was found to be associated with a significantly better total PANSS score [standardized mean difference (SMD) = -0.42, 95% confidence interval (CI) -0.75 to -0.09, I2 = 72%; P = 0.01] and PANSS negative subscale score (SMD = -0.26, 95% CI -0.45 to -0.07, I2 = 0%; P = 0.009) in comparison with placebo. However, add-on statin therapy did not appear to improve scores for the PANSS positive and general subscales at the study-defined endpoint (6-24 weeks). CONCLUSIONS: Our meta-analysis indicates that adjunctive statin therapy may confer benefits in ameliorating PANSS negative and total scores. It needs more solid data to confirm the results are related to clinical improvement and functioning.

Objectives: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) are common complications following surgical procedures. While drug-based treatments are standard, there is increasing interest in nonpharmacological alternatives, such as aromatherapy, due to potential benefits and minimal side effects. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of aromatherapy in preventing PONV. Materials and Methods: A comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted using PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and CINAHL databases for studies published up to May 2023. The included studies were randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and nonrandomized studies of interventions that examined the impact of aromatherapy on PONV. The risk of bias was assessed, and the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) approach was employed to evaluate the certainty of the evidence. Results: Eleven studies were selected for review, with eight RCTs included in the meta-analysis. Aromatherapy effectively reduced postoperative nausea severity (standardized mean difference [SMD]: -0.93, 95% confidence interval [CI]: -1.64 to -0.22; P = 0.010), but the reduction in vomiting episodes was not statistically significant (SMD: -0.81, 95% CI: -1.98-0.37; P = 0.180). Subgroup analysis indicated that ginger essence, lavender, and peppermint oils were particularly effective in managing postoperative nausea. However, due to significant statistical heterogeneity and potential biases in the studies, the results should be interpreted with caution. The certainty of the evidence, as evaluated by the GRADE approach, was low. Conclusion: Preliminary evidence supports the potential benefit of aromatherapy in reducing the severity of postoperative nausea. However, given the low certainty of current evidence, more rigorous and standardized research is needed. The safety, affordability, and potential benefits to patient comfort make aromatherapy a promising area for further research in postoperative care.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence indicates that incretin-based therapies (IBTs), glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs), and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP4is) are effective and safe for treating pediatric obesity patients with or without type 2 diabetes. Therefore, we aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis for updating current evidence. METHODS: We searched the PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and the EMBASE database for articles published until September 15, 2023, and limited to randomized control trials. The primary outcomes were changed from baseline in weight metrics and the cardiometabolic profile. A random effects model will be used, as high heterogeneity is expected. All analyses were performed using STATA 17.0. RESULTS: Fifteen trials with a total number of 1286 participants were included in our meta-analysis. Overall, the mean difference in weight change between the IBTs group and the control group was -2.89 kg (95% confidence interval, -5.12 to -0.65, p = 0.011). Additionally, IBTs significantly reduced the HbA1c level and fasting plasma glucose by 0.37% and 6.99 mg/dl, compared with control groups. IBTs showed a little increased risk of GI side effects and hypoglycemia events, but none of the severe hypoglycemia events were occurred in IBTs group. CONCLUSIONS: Our study results have proved that GLP-1 RAs are safe, acceptable, and effective in weight reduction and sugar control for children with obesity. In addition, DPP-4is seems to have no effect on glycemic control and weight loss in childhood obesity. Further research is needed to confirm these findings, especially in younger children.

Superhydrophilic graphite surfaces and water-dispersible graphite colloids are obtained by electrochemical exfoliation with hydrophobic graphite electrodes. Such counterintuitive characteristics are caused by partial oxidation and investigated by examining both graphite electrodes and exfoliated particles after electrolysis. The extent of surface oxidation can be explored through contact angle measurement, scanning electron microscope, electrical sheet resistance, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, zeta-potential analyzer, thermogravimetric analysis, UV-visible, and Raman spectroscopy. The degree of wettability of the graphite anode can be altered by the electrolytic current and time. The water contact angle declines generally with increasing the electrolytic current or time. After a sufficient time, the graphite anode becomes superhydrophilic and its hydrophobicity can be recovered by peeling with adhesive tape. This consequence reveals that the anodic graphite is oxidized by oxygen bubbles but the oxidation just occurs at the outer layers of the graphite sheet. Moreover, the characteristics of oxidation revealed by UV peak shift, peak ratio between D and G bands, and negative zeta-potential indicate the presence of graphite oxide on the outer shell of the exfoliated colloids. However, thermogravimetric analysis for the extent of decomposition of oxygen functional groups verifies that the amount of oxygen groups is significantly less than that of graphite oxide prepared via Hummer method. The structure of this partially oxidized graphite may consist of a graphite core covered with an oxidized shell. The properties of the exfoliated colloids are also influenced by pH of the electrolytic solution. As pH is increased, the extent of oxidation descends and the thickness of oxidized shell decreases. Those results reveal that the degree of oxidation of exfoliated nanoparticles can be manipulated simply by controlling pH.

Urinary d-lactate is highly correlated to diabetic nephropathy - a progressive kidney disease in renal glomeruli. In this study, we used a C3H/3e mouse model to investigate the relationship between urinary d-lactate and aristolochic acid nephropathy where the glomerular structure is not affected. The nephropathy was induced using intravenous injections of aristolochic acid at a dosage of 10 mg/kg per day for 5 days and was characterized biochemically and histologically. The urinary excretions of proteins, N-acetyl-ß-d-glucosaminidase and serum creatinine were determined and connected to histological conventional findings. Urinary d-lactate was analyzed using column-switching high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. The results showed a remarkable increase of urinary markers, including of urinary proteins and N-acetyl-ß-d-glucosaminidase, and the histological examination confirmed a diagnosis of acute tubule necrosis. The ratio of d-lactate to creatinine in the urine of aristolochic acid-treated mice was approximately 36 times greater than that of the mice in the control group (p < 0.05). The ratios for the two groups of mice were 311.00 ± 71.70 and 8.60 ± 1.80 µmol/mmol creatinine, respectively. These data confirm in vivo that urinary d-lactate reflects renal injury conditions in aristolochic acid-treated mice and may be a marker for the assessment of nephropathy.

To find new molecular markers for early diagnosis of diabetic nephropathy, we applied fluorogenic derivatization-liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry to identify the differentially expressed proteins in the kidney of control and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. The Sprague-Dawley rats were injected with the sodium citrate buffer or streptozotocin and then killed after 1, 4, 12 and 24 weeks. The results showed that seven proteins were significantly changed after 1 week of injection. Only one protein had significantly changed after 4 weeks of injection. However, after 12 weeks of injection, the number of altered proteins rose to 10. After 24 weeks of injection, 18 proteins had altered significantly. Five common proteins were significantly altered at week 12 and 24 after injection, respectively. Importantly, these proteins appeared prior to microalbuminuria and may serve as new biomarkers that are able to improve early detection of and new drug development for diabetic-related nephropathy.

Background: Pancreatic cancer can induce a hypercoagulable state which may lead to clinically apparent thrombosis. However, the effect of anticoagulants remains ambiguous. This study aimed to investigate the potential effect of long-term systemic anticoagulant usage on hospitalization outcomes of patients with pancreatic cancer. Methods: This retrospective study extracted all data from the U.S. Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) database from 2005 to 2018. We included hospitalized adults ≥18 years old with a pancreatic cancer diagnosis identified by International Classification of Diseases ninth revision (ICD-9) and tenth revision (ICD-10) codes. We utilized diagnostic codes ICD9 V58.61 and ICD10 Z79.01, i.e., 'long-term use of anticoagulant', to identify individuals who were on a long-term systemic anticoagulant. The study cohort were then further grouped as being with or without long-term systemic use of an anticoagulant. Propensity score matching was performed to balance the characteristics of the two groups. The risks of life-threatening events, e.g., acute myocardial infarction (AMI), acute heart failure (AHF), sepsis, shock, and acute kidney injury (AKI), in-hospital death, and prolonged length of stay (LOS) in the hospital were compared between the groups by univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses. Results: The study population consisted of 242,903 hospitalized patients with pancreas cancer, 6.5% (n = 15,719) of whom were on long-term systemic anticoagulants. A multivariable regression analysis showed that long-term systemic anticoagulant use was independently associated with lower odds of sepsis (aOR: 0.81, 95% CI: 0.76-0.85), shock (aOR: 0.59, 95% CI: 0.51-0.68), AKI (aOR: 0.86, 95% CI: 0.81-0.91), in-hospital mortality (aOR: 0.65, 95% CI: 0.60-0.70), and prolonged LOS (aOR: 0.84, 95% CI: 0.80-0.89). Conclusions: Long-term systemic anticoagulant use is associated with better clinical outcomes in terms of decreased risks of some life-threatening events, in-hospital death, and prolonged LOS among hospitalized patients with pancreatic cancer in the U.S.

Aristolochic acid, found in the Aristolochia species, causes aristolochic acid nephropathy (AAN) and can develop into renal failure. Methylglyoxal (MGO) is a highly cytotoxic compound generated from the metabolic process of glucose or fatty acids. It binds to proteins and forms N(ε)-(carboxymethyl)lysine (CML), which contributes to aging and diabetes mellitus complications. However, no relevant literature explores the relationship of MGO and CML with AAN. By injecting AA (10mg/kg BW) into C3H/He mice for 5 consecutive days, we successfully developed an AAN model and observed tubular atrophy with decreased renal function. Creatinine clearance also decreased from 10.32 ± 0.79 ml/min/kg to 2.19 ± 0.29 ml/min/kg (p<0.01). The concentration of MGO in kidney homogenates increased 12 × compared to the control group (from 18.23 ± 8.05 µg/mg of protein to 231.16 ± 17.57 µg/mg of protein, p<0.01), and CML was observed in the renal tubules of the mice by immunohistochemistry. Furthermore, compared to the control group, GSH levels decreased by 0.32 × (from 2.46 ± 0.41 µM/µg of protein to 0.78 ± 0.15 µM/µg of protein, p<0.01), whereas intra-renal antioxidant capacity decreased by 0.54×(from 6.82 ± 0.97 U to 3.71 ± 0.25 U; unit is equivalent to µM Trolox/mg of protein, p<0.01). In this study, we found that serious kidney damage induced by AA is related to an increase and accumulation of MGO and CML.

In this study, electrolyte-insulator-semiconductor (EIS) capacitors with Sb2O3/SiO2 double stacked sensing membranes were fabricated with pH sensing capability. The results indicate that Sb2O3/SiO2 double stacked membranes with appropriate annealing had better material quality and sensing performance than Sb2O3 membranes did. To investigate the influence of double stack and annealing, multiple material characterizations and sensing measurements on membranes including of X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were conducted. These analyses indicate that double stack could enhance crystallization and grainization, which reinforced the surface sites on the membrane. Therefore, the sensing capability could be enhanced, Sb2O3/SiO2-based with appropriate annealing show promises for future industrial ion sensing devices.

Background: Osteoporosis and immune-associated disorders are highly prevalent among menopausal women, and diet control and exercise exert beneficial effects on physiological modulation in this population. A controlled diet with a low fat content and a balanced caloric intake improves menopausal health, but the health effects of excessive fructose consumption on menopausal women are yet to be confirmed. In addition, whole-body vibration (WBV), a safe passive-training method, has been shown to have multiple beneficial effects on metabolism regulation, obesity, and bone health. Methods: The ovariectomized (OVX) C57BL/6J model was used to verify the effects of WBV combined with a high-fructose diet (HFrD) for 16 weeks on physiological modulation and immune responses. The mice were randomly allocated to sham, OVX, OVX+HFrD, and OVX+HFrD+WBV groups, which were administered with the indicated ovariectomy, dietary and WBV training treatments. We conducted growth, dietary intake, glucose homeostasis, body composition, immunity, inflammation, histopathology, and osteoporotic assessments (primary outcomes). Results: Our results showed that the isocaloric HFrD in OVX mice negated estrogen-deficiency-associated obesity, but that risk factors such as total cholesterol, glucose intolerance, osteoporosis, and liver steatosis still contributed to the development of metabolic diseases. Immune homeostasis in the OVX mice was also negatively affected by the HFrD diet, via the comprehensive stimulation of T cell activation, causing inflammation. The WBV intervention combined with the HFrD model significantly ameliorated weight gain, glucose intolerance, total cholesterol, and inflammatory cytokines (interferon gamma [IFN-γ], interleukin [IL]-17, and IL-4) in the OVX mice, although osteoporosis and liver steatosis were not affected compared to the negative control group. These findings indicate that an isocaloric high-fructose diet alone may not result in menopausal obesity, but that some deleterious physiological impacts still exist. Conclusion: The WBV method may modulate the physiological impacts of menopause and the HFrD diet, and should be considered as an alternative exercise prescription for people with poor compliance or who are unable or unwilling to use traditional methods to improve their health. In future studies, using the WBV method as a preventive or therapeutic strategy, combined with nutritional interventions, medication, and other exercise prescriptions, may prove beneficial for maintaining health in menopausal women.
