RESUMO

Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease and Behcet's uveitis (BU) are the two major vision-threatening uveitis entities. This study performed the first label-free quantitative proteomics on aqueous humor-derived exosomes from 84 patients with VKH or BU to determine their potential roles. Sixty-five differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) and 40 DEPs were detected in the VKH and BU groups, respectively. GO and KEGG analysis showed that DEPs were mainly enriched in the complement-related pathways. The complement C1q subcomponent subunit B (C1QB) was identified as a key exosomal protein, and its expression was significantly increased by western blotting in both diseases. Additionally, the integrated analysis based on the published scRNA-seq data showed that C1QB-containing exosomes were mainly produced by mononuclear macrophages in the anterior segment tissue. Overall, our proteomic profiling highlights that complement-related pathways may be actively involved in the pathogenesis of these two diseases. These pathways may also serve as treatment targets for both diseases.

RESUMO

Solar energy conversion technologies, particularly solar-driven photothermal conversion, are both clean and manageable. Although much progress has been made in designing solar-driven photothermal materials, significant challenges remain, not least the photobleaching of organic dyes. To tackle these issues, micro-carbonized polysaccharide chains, with carbon dots (CDs) suspended from the chains, are conceived, just like grapes or tomatoes hanging from a vine. Carbonization of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) produces just such a structure (termed CMC-g-CDs), which is used to produce an ultra-stable, robust, and efficient solar-thermal film by interfacial interactions within the CMC-g-CDs. The introduction of the CDs into the matrix of the photothermal material effectively avoided the problem of photobleaching. Manipulating the interfacial interactions (such as electrostatic interactions, van der Waals interactions, π-π stacking, and hydrogen bonding) between the CDs and the polymer chains markedly enhances the mechanical properties of the photothermal film. The CMC-g-CDs are complexed with Fe3+ to eliminate leakage of the photothermal reagent from the matrix and to solve the problem of poor water resistance. The resulting film (CMC-g-CDs-Fe) has excellent prospects for practical application as a photothermal film.

RESUMO

Schistosomiasis is caused by parasitic flatworms known as schistosomes and affects over 200 million people worldwide. Prevention of T cell exhaustion by blockade of PD-1 results in clinical benefits to cancer patients and clearance of viral infections, however it remains largely unknown whether loss of PD-1 could prevent or cure schistosomiasis in susceptible mice. In this study, we found that S. japonicum infection dramatically induced PD-1 expression in T cells of the liver where the parasites chronically inhabit and elicit deadly inflammation. Even in mice infected by non-egg-producing unisex parasites, we still observed potent induction of PD-1 in liver T cells of C57BL/6 mice following S. japonicum infection. To determine the function of PD-1 in schistosomiasis, we generated PD-1-deficient mice by CRISPR/Cas9 and found that loss of PD-1 markedly increased T cell count in the liver and spleen of infected mice. IL-4 secreting Th2 cells were significantly decreased in the infected PD-1-deficient mice whereas IFN-γ secreting CD4+ and CD8+ T cells were markedly increased. Surprisingly, such beneficial changes of T cell response did not result in eradication of parasites or in lowering the pathogen burden. In further experiments, we found that loss of PD-1 resulted in both beneficial T cell responses and amplification of regulatory T cells that prevented PD-1-deficient T cells from unleashing anti-parasite activity. Moreover, such PD-1-deficient Tregs exert excessive immunosuppression and express larger amounts of adenosine receptors CD39 and CD73 that are crucial for Treg-mediated immunosuppression. Our experimental results have elucidated the function of PD-1 in schistosomiasis and provide novel insights into prevention and treatment of schistosomiasis on the basis of modulating host adaptive immunity.

RESUMO

Sevoflurane is one of the most widely used inhaled anesthetics. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been demonstrated to affect sevoflurane anesthesia-induced neuron damage. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role and mechanism of miR-181a-5p in sevoflurane-induced hippocampal neuronal injury. Primary hippocampal neurons were identified using microscopy and immunofluorescence. The viability and apoptosis of sevoflurane anesthesia-induced neurons were detected by cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay and terminal-deoxynucleoitidyl transferase-mediated nick end-labeling (TUNEL) staining assay, respectively. The levels of apoptosis- and oxidative stress-related proteins as well as the markers in the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway were examined by immunoblotting. Enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assays were performed to examine the levels of inflammatory cytokines. Luciferase reporter assay was conducted to validate the combination between miR-181a-5p and DEAD-box helicase 3, X-linked (DDX3X). Sevoflurane exposure led to significantly inhibited hippocampal neuron viability and elevated miR-181a-5p expression. Knockdown of miR-181a-5p alleviated sevoflurane-induced neuron injury by reducing cell apoptosis, inflammatory response, and oxidative stress. Additionally, DDX3X was targeted and negatively regulated by miR-181a-5p. Moreover, miR-181a-5p inhibitor activated the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway via DDX3X in sevoflurane-treated cells. Rescue experiments revealed that DDX3X knockdown or overexpression of Wnt antagonist Dickkopf-1 (DKK1) reversed the suppressive effects of miR-181a-5p inhibitor on cell apoptosis, inflammatory response, and oxidative stress in sevoflurane-treated neuronal cells. MiR-181a-5p ameliorated sevoflurane-triggered neuron injury by regulating the DDX3X/Wnt/ß-catenin axis, suggesting the potential of miR-181a-5p as a novel and promising therapeutic target for the treatment of sevoflurane-evoked neurotoxicity.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to compare the efficacy of peripheral add multifocal soft contact lenses (SCLs) (excluding bifocal SCLs) with single vision contact lenses or spectacles in controlling myopia progression. METHOD: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in the Pubmed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases until October 2023. The literature was thoroughly screened based on predetermined eligibility criteria. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) were calculated for dichotomous data and weighted mean differences (WMD) for continuous data. RESULTS: A total of 11 articles comprising 787 participants were included in this meta-analysis. Our pooled results demonstrated that the peripheral add multifocal SCLs groups exhibited significantly reduced refraction progression (MD = 0.20; 95%CI, 0.14 ∼ 0.27; P<0.001) and less axial length elongation (MD=-0.08; 95%CI, -0.09∼-0.08; P<0.001) compared to the control group. There was no significant difference in high-contrast logMAR distance visual acuity between the two groups (MD = 0.01; 95%CI, -0.00 ∼ 0.02; P = 0.19). However, the group using single-vision lenses had better low-contrast logMAR distance visual acuity compared to those using peripheral add multifocal SCLs (MD = 0.06; 95%CI, 0.02 ∼ 0.10; P = 0.004). Data synthesis using a random-effects model indicated an incidence of contact lens-related adverse events of 0.065 (95%CI, 0.048 ∼ 0.083). CONCLUSIONS: The present meta-analysis signifies that peripheral defocus modifying contact lenses are effective in slowing down the progression of myopia and reducing axial elongation.

RESUMO

The shortage of freshwater resources caused by heavy metal pollution is an acute global issue, which has a great impact on environmental protection and human health. Therefore, the exploitation of new strategies for designing and synthesizing green, efficient, and economical materials for the detection and removal of heavy metal ions is crucial. Among the various methods for the detection and removal of heavy ions, advanced functional systems including nanomaterials, polymers, porous materials, and biomaterials have attracted considerable attention over the past several years due to their capabilities of real-time detection, excellent removal efficiency, anti-interference, quick response, high selectivity, and low limit of detection. In this tutorial review, we review the general design principles underlying the aforementioned functional materials, and in particular highlight the fundamental mechanisms and specific examples of detecting and removing heavy metal ions. Additionally, the methods which enhance water purification quality using these functional materials have been reviewed, also current challenges and opportunities in this exciting field have been highlighted, including the fabrication, subsequent treatment, and potential future applications of such functional materials. We envision that this tutorial review will provide invaluable guidance for the design of functional materials tailored towards the detection and removal of heavy metals, thereby expediting the development of high-performance materials and fostering the development of more efficient approaches to water pollution remediation.

RESUMO

Objective To establish a model for predicting the growth of pulmonary ground-glass nodules (GGN) based on the clinical visualization parameters extracted by the 3D reconstruction technique and to verify the prediction performance of the model. Methods A retrospective analysis was carried out for 354 cases of pulmonary GGN followed up regularly in the outpatient of pulmonary nodules in Zhoushan Hospital of Zhejiang Province from March 2015 to December 2022.The semi-automatic segmentation method of 3D Slicer was employed to extract the quantitative imaging features of nodules.According to the follow-up results, the nodules were classified into a resting group and a growing group.Furthermore, the nodules were classified into a training set and a test set by the simple random method at a ratio of 7∶3.Clinical and imaging parameters were used to establish a prediction model, and the prediction performance of the model was tested on the validation set. Results A total of 119 males and 235 females were included, with a median age of 55.0 (47.0,63.0) years and the mean follow-up of (48.4±16.3) months. There were 247 cases in the training set and 107 cases in the test set.The binary Logistic regression analysis showed that age (95%CI=1.010-1.092,P=0.015) and mass (95%CI=1.002-1.067,P=0.035) were independent predictors of nodular growth. The mass (M) of nodules was calculated according to the formula M=V×(CTmean+1000)×0.001 (where V is the volume,V=3/4πR3,R:radius).Therefore,the logit prediction model was established as ln[P/(1-P)]=-1.300+0.043×age+0.257×two-dimensional diameter+0.007×CTmean.The Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness of fit test was performed to test the fitting degree of the model for the measured data in the validation set (χ2=4.515,P=0.808).The check plot was established for the prediction model, which showed the area under receiver-operating characteristic curve being 0.702. Conclusions The results of this study indicate that patient age and nodule mass are independent risk factors for promoting the growth of pulmonary GGN.A model for predicting the growth possibility of GGN is established and evaluated, which provides a basis for the formulation of GGN management strategies.

RESUMO

Sustainable carbon dots based on cellulose, particularly carboxymethyl cellulose carbon dots (CMCCDs), were confined in an inorganic network resulting in CMCCDs@SiO2. This resulted in a material exhibiting long afterglow covering a time frame of several seconds also under air. Temperature-dependent emission spectra gave information on thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) while photocurrent experiments provided a deeper understanding of charge availability in the dark period, and therefore, its availability on the photocatalyst surface. The photo-ATRP initiator, ethyl α-bromophenylacetate (EBPA), quenched the emission from the millisecond to the nanosecond time frame indicating participation of the triplet state in photoinduced electron transfer (PET). Both free radical and controlled radical polymerization based on photo-ATRP protocol worked successfully. Metal-free photo-ATRP resulted in chain extendable macroinitiators based on a reductive mechanism with either MMA or in combination with styrene. Addition of 9 ppm Cu2+ resulted in Mw/Mn of 1.4 while an increase to 72 ppm improved uniformity of the polymers; that is Mw/Mn=1.03. Complementary experiments with kerria laca carbon dots confined materials, namely KCDs@SiO2, provided similar results. Deposition of Cu2+ (9 ppm) on the photocatalyst surface explains better uniformity of the polymers formed in the ATRP protocol.

RESUMO

Sustainable carbon dots comprising surficial oxime ester groups following homolytic bond cleavage exhibit potential as photoinitiators for traditional free radical photopolymerization. Carbon dots were made following a solvothermal procedure from sustainable furfural available from lignocellulose. Surficial aldehyde moieties reacted with hydroxylamine to the respective oxime while reaction with benzoyl chloride resulted in a biobased Type I photoinitiator comprising sustainable carbon dot (CD-PI). Photoinitiating ability was compared with the traditional photoinitiator (PI) ethyl (2,4,6-trimethyl benzoyl) phenyl phosphinate (TPO-L) by real-time FTIR with UV exposure at 365 nm. Photopolymer composition based on a mixture of urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA) and tripropylene glycol diacrylate (TPGDA) resulted in a similar final conversion of about 70 % using either CD-PI or TPO-L. Nevertheless, it appeared homogeneous in the case of compositions processed with CD-PI, while those made with TPO-L were heterogeneous as shown by two glass transition temperatures. Moreover, the migration rate of CD-PI in the cured samples was lower in comparison with those samples using TPO-L as PI.

RESUMO

Carbon nanomaterials, specifically carbon dots and carbon nitrides, play a crucial role as heterogeneous photoinitiators in both radical and cationic polymerization processes. These recently introduced materials offer promising solutions to the limitations of current homogeneous systems, presenting a novel approach to photopolymerization. This review highlights the preparation and photocatalytic performance of these nanomaterials, emphasizing their application in various polymerization techniques, including photoinduced i) free radical, ii) RAFT, iii) ATRP, and iv) cationic photopolymerization. Additionally, it discusses their potential in addressing contemporary challenges and explores prospects in this field. Moreover, carbon nitrides, in particular, exhibit exceptional oxygen tolerance, underscoring their significance in radical polymerization processes and allowing their applications such as 3D printing, surface modification of coatings, and hydrogel engineering.

RESUMO

DNA 5-Hydroxymethylcytosine (5-hmC), an oxidative reaction mediated by the ten-eleven translocation (TET) family, has been reported to play an essential role in the progression of auto-inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. By far, little is known about the effect of DNA 5-hmC and the TET family on the development of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease. In this study, we discovered that the global DNA 5-hmC level and the TET activity were elevated in association with the up-regulated expression of TET2 at both mRNA and protein levels in CD4+T cells from active VKH patients compared to healthy controls. Integrated analysis of DNA 5-hmC pattern and transcription profile of CD4+ T cells revealed that 6 candidate target genes were involved in the development of VKH disease. The promoter 5-hmC and mRNA levels of leucine rich repeat containing 39 (LRRC39) were verified to be elevated in active VKH patients. Functional experiments showed that TET2 could up-regulate LRRC39 mRNA expression by increasing the promoter 5-hmC level of LRRC39 in CD4+ T cells from active VKH patients. Up-regulated LRRC39 expression could increase the frequencies of IFN-γ+ and IL-17+ CD4+ T cells as well as the secretions of IFN-γ and IL-17 in association with the decreased frequency of CD4+CD25+FOXP3+ regulatory T (Treg) cells and the reduced production of IL-10. Additionally, restoration of LRRC39 rescued TET2-silencing-mediated reduced frequency of IFN-γ+ CD4+ T cells and increased frequency of CD4+CD25+FOXP3+ Treg cells. Collectively, our study reveals a novel axis, the TET2-5-hmC-LRRC39-Th1/Treg responses axis, in the pathogenesis of VKH and provides a potential target for further investigation into the epigenetic therapy of this disease.

RESUMO

Carbon dots (CDs), a new type of carbon-based fluorescent nanomaterial, have attracted widespread attention because of their numerous excellent properties. Lignocellulosic biomass is the most abundant renewable natural resource and possesses broad potential to manufacture different composite and smart materials. Numerous studies have explored the potential of using the components (such as cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin) in lignocellulosic biomass to produce CDs. There are few papers systemically aiming in the review of the state-of-the-art works related to lignocellulosic biomass-derived CDs. In this review, the significant advances in synthesis processes, formation mechanisms, structural characteristics, optical properties, and applications of lignocellulosic biomass-based CDs such as cellulose-based CDs, hemicellulose-based CDs and lignin-based CDs in latest research are reviewed. In addition, future research directions on the improvement of the synthesis technology of CDs using lignocellulosic biomass as raw materials to enhance the properties of CDs are proposed. This review will serve as a road map for scientists engaged in research and exploring more applications of CDs in different science fields to achieve the highest material performance goals of CDs.

RESUMO

Varicella is a highly prevalent infectious disease with a similar transmission pathway to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, anti-COVID-19 nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) have been implemented to prevent the spread of the infection. This study aims to analyze varicella's epidemiological characteristics and further investigate the effect of anti-COVID-19 NPIs on varicella in Xi'an, northwestern China. Based on the varicella surveillance data, search engine indices, meteorological factors from 2011 to 2021 in Xi'an, and different levels of emergency response to COVID-19 during the pandemic, we applied Bayesian Structural Time Series models and interrupted time series analysis to predict the counterfactual incidence of varicella and quantify the impact of varying NPIs intensities on varicella. From 2011 to 2021, varicella incidence increased, especially in 2019, with a high incidence of 111.69/100 000. However, there was a sharp decrease of 43.18% in 2020 compared with 2019, and the peak of varicella incidence in 2020 was lower than in previous years from the 21st to the 25th week. In 2021, the seasonality of varicella incidence gradually returned to a seasonal pattern in 2011-2019. The results suggest that anti-COVID-19 NPIs effectively reduce the incidence of varicella, and the reduction has spatiotemporal heterogeneity.

RESUMO

Measures of attention and memory were evaluated in 6- to 9-month-old infants from two diverse contexts. One sample consisted of African infants residing in rural Malawi (N = 228, 118 girls, 110 boys). The other sample consisted of racially diverse infants residing in suburban California (N = 48, 24 girls, 24 boys). Infants were tested in an eye-tracking version of the visual paired comparison procedure and were shown racially familiar faces. The eye tracking data were parsed into individual looks, revealing that both groups of infants showed significant memory performance. However, how a look was operationally defined impacted some-but not other-measures of infant VPC performance. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: In both the US and Malawi, 6- to 9-month-old infants showed evidence of memory for faces they had previously viewed during a familiarization period. Infant age was associated with peak look duration and memory performance in both contexts. Different operational definitions of a look yielded consistent findings for peak look duration and novelty preference scores-but not shift rate. Operationalization of look-defined measures is an important consideration for studies of infants in different cultural contexts.

RESUMO

Prostate cancer refers to the epithelial malignant tumor of the prostate. It has a high incidence and mortality rate, seriously endangering the lives of men. In recent years, lncRNAs have become a hot topic for lots of scholars for their regulation functions on assorted cancers. Several lncRNAs have been proven they can take part in the regulation of prostate cancer development. Nevertheless, how HOXA11-AS (homeobox A11 antisense RNA)functioned in prostate cancer is not explained. In our research, the expression of HOXA11-AS in prostate cancer cells was evaluated through qRT-PCR. Colony formation experiments, EdU experiments, Tanswelland TUNEL experiments, as well as caspase-3 detection, were designed to test cell proliferation, migration, invasion and apoptosis. RIP, pull down and luciferase reporter experiments examined the correlations of HOXA11-AS, miR-148b-3p and MLPH. We discovered a high level of HOXA11-AS in prostate cancer cells.HOXA11-AS silence could restrain the mentioned cell malignant behavior. Mechanically, HOXA11-AS could sponge miR-148b-3p to target MLPH. MLPH was positively associated with HOXA11-AS and overexpressed it accelerated the progression of prostate cancer. Taken together, HOXA11-AS elevated MLPH expression by sponging miR-148b-3p and accelerated prostate cancer cell proliferation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of botulinum toxin injection (BTX) and bilateral medial rectus recession (BMR) in the treatment of comitant esotropia. METHODS: An exhaustive search of the literature from Pubmed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases was carried out until April 2022. No language restrictions were applied. The literature was rigorously screened against eligibility criteria. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated. RESULTS: A total of 9 articles with 1100 participants were included in this meta-analysis. Three studies compared the effects of BTX to BMR on infantile esotropia, five studies compared the effects of BTX to BMR on acute acquired comitant esotropia, and one study compared the therapeutic effects between BTX and BMR for partially accommodative esotropia. Our pooled results showed that BMR achieved higher overall success rate compared with BTX (OR, 0.49; 95%CI, 0.37-0.64; P < 0.001) and patients subjected to the BTX procedure had higher overall rate of undercorrection (OR, 2.27; 95%CI,1.71-3.02; P < 0.001). No statistical difference in the overall overcorrection rate was observed between the two groups (OR = 0.42, 95% CI: 0.17 ~ 1.03, P = 0.06). Further analysis found that BMR was more effective for infantile esotropia compared to botulinum toxin injections (OR, 0.40; 95%CI, 0.27-0.57; P < 0.001). Nevertheless, the same effect was observed for BMR and BTX in the treatment of acute acquired comitant esotropia (OR, 0.97; 95%CI, 0.50-1.87; P = 0.93). CONCLUSION: The present meta-analysis indicated that the BMR procedure achieved a higher success rate and a lower undercorrection rate in patients with comitant esotropia. However, BTX demonstrated similar treatment effects to BMR surgery in the treatment of acute acquired comitant esotropia.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Pediatric uveitis may cause severe impairment of vision in children and affect their quality of life as well as cognitive ability. This study aims to evaluate the functional vision, visual-related and health-related quality of life, and cognitive ability in pediatric uveitis. METHODS: Children with uveitis aged 5-16 years old completed six validated instruments to assess functional visual ability with Cardiff Visual Ability Questionnaire for Children (CVAQC), vision-related quality of life with Impact of Vision Impairment for Children (IVI-C), health-related quality of life with Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL), cognitive ability with Chinese Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (C-WISC), and depression and anxiety evaluation with Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD). RESULTS: The CVAQC, IVI-C, and PedsQL scores of pediatric uveitis were significantly lower than that of normal levels. Full-scale intelligence quotient (IQ) and performance IQ were significantly lower in pediatric uveitis patients with impaired vision in their best eye (visual acuity < 0.3) compared to those with a vision equal to or better than 0.3. Verbal IQ was significantly lower in male pediatric uveitis patients with impaired vision compared to those with a vision equal to or better than 0.3. Additionally, parents of pediatric uveitis patients with impaired vision generally had lower educational levels than parents of those with a vision equal to or better than 0.3. CONCLUSIONS: Impaired vision caused by pediatric uveitis has a significant impact on children's functional visual ability and quality of life. The development of cognitive function in pediatric uveitis is also significantly hindered.

RESUMO

Objective: To analyze the influencing factors of tumor volume, body immunity, and poor prognosis after 125I particle therapy for differentiated thyroid cancer. Methods: A total of 104 patients with differentiated TC who were treated with 125I particles during January 2020 to January 2021 was picked. These subjects were graded as low-dose group (80Gy-110Gy) and high-dose group (110Gy-140Gy) according to the minimum dose received by 90% of the target volume (D90) after surgery. The tumor volume before and after treatment was compared, and fasting venous blood was collected before and after treatment. The content of thyroglobulin (Tg) was detected by electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. The levels of absolute lymphocyte count (ALC), lymphocytes, neutrophils, and monocytes were detected on automatic blood cell analyzer. The lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet to lymphocyte ration (PLR) were calculated. The changes in the condition of patients were closely observed, and the occurrence of adverse reactions in the two groups were compared. The risk factors influencing the efficacy of 125I particle therapy for differentiated TC were analyzed through multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results: The total effective rate of patients in the low- and high-dose groups was 78.85% and 82.69%, respectively (P > 0.05). Compared with the pretreatment period, the tumor volume and Tg level in both groups were much lower (P < 0.05), and the differences in tumor volume and Tg level had no statistically significant difference between the two groups before and after treatment (P > 0.05). At 1 week of the treatment, the total incidence of adverse reactions such as nausea, radiation gastritis, radiation parotitis, and neck discomfort was obviously higher in the high-dose group than in the low-dose group (P < 0.05). At 1 month of treatment, the incidence of adverse reactions such as nausea was markedly higher in the high-dose group than in the low-dose group (P < 0.05). After treatment, serum NLR and PLR contents were memorably elevated and LMR level was sharply decreased in both groups, and serum NLR and PLR contents were higher and LMR content was lower in the high-dose group than in the low-dose group (P < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the pathological type of follicular adenocarcinoma, tumor size ≥ 2 cm, clinical stage of III~IV, distant metastasis, and high TSH level before 125I particle treatment were all risk factors related to the efficacy of 125I particle treatment of TC (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The efficacy of low-dose and high-dose 125I particles in the treatment of differentiated thyroid cancer is comparable, among which low-dose 125I particles have fewer adverse effects and have less impact on the immunity of the body, which is well tolerated by patients and can be widely used in clinical practice. In addition, the pathological type of follicular adenocarcinoma, tumor size ≥ 2 cm, clinical stage III~IV, distant metastasis, and high TSH level before 125I particle treatment are all risk factors that affect the poor effect of 125I particles on thyroid cancer treatment, and early monitoring of the above index changes can help evaluate the prognosis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Intermittent exotropia is the most prevalent subtype of exotropia in children. Part-time occlusion (PTO) as an anti-suppression therapy was applied for nonsurgical management of intermittent exotropia. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to compare the effectiveness of PTO therapy and observation in the treatment of intermittent exotropia. METHOD: An exhaustive search of the literature from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases was carried out until July 2022. No language restrictions were applied. The literature was rigorously screened against eligibility criteria. Weighted mean differences and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated. RESULTS: A total of 4 articles with 617 participants were included in this meta-analysis. Our pooled results showed that PTO exhibited superior effects compared to observation, with greater decrease in exotropia control at distance and near (MD = -0.38, 95% CI: -0.57 to -0.20, p < 0.001; MD = -0.36, 95% CI: -0.54 to -0.18, p < 0.001); patients subjected to PTO therapy had greater decrease in distance deviations (MD = -1.95, 95% CI: -3.13 to -0.76, p = 0.001), and there was greater improvement in near stereoacuity among the PTO group in comparison with the observation group (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The present meta-analysis indicated that PTO therapy showed a better effect in improving control and near stereopsis and decreasing distance exodeviation angle of children with intermittent exotropia in comparison with observation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Intermittent exotropia (IXT) is the most common type of strabismus, overminus lens (OML) therapy is frequently prescribed to treat IXT. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of OML and observation in the treatment of IXT. METHOD: An exhaustive search of the literature in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases was performed until July 2022. No language restrictions were used. The literature was rigorously screened according to eligibility criteria. Weighted mean differences and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. RESULTS: A total of 4 articles with 561 participants were included in this meta-analysis. Our pooled results showed that OML demonstrated superior outcomes compared with observation, with greater decreases in distance and near exodeviation control (MD = -1.08, 95% CI: -1.96 to -0.20, p = 0.02; MD, -0.64, 95% CI: -1.15 to -0.13, p < 0.001). Patients who received OML therapy had a greater decrease in the deviation at both distance and near (MD = -4.00, 95% CI: -7.03 to -0.98, p < 0.001; MD = -4.79, 95% CI: -6.29 to -3.30, p < 0.001). There was no statistical difference between the two groups in terms of post-treatment proximal stereopsis (MD, 0.00, 95% CI: -0.08 to 0.08, p = 1.00). CONCLUSIONS: The present meta-analysis indicated that OML therapy was effective in improving the control and decreasing exodeviation angle of IXT. However, it seemed not to be effective in improving the level of near stereopsis.
