RESUMO

Chiral, enantiopure Yb(III) complexes exhibit circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in the near infrared (NIR) wavelength region. This CPL is quantified by the dissymmetry factor (glum). The excited state 2F5/2 consists of six mJ' states degenerated in three Stark levels, due to the crystal-field splitting (CFS), which are populated in accordance with the Boltzmann distribution. Consequently, room temperature CPL spectra are the sum of various - either positive or negative - contributions, that are practically impossible to quantify. To address this issue, an advanced setup enabling CPL measurements over a broad temperature range (300 to 4 K) has been developed. The interrelation of CFS, glum and temperature was explored using a pair of enantiopure Yb(III) complexes, highlighting the individual contribution of each crystal-field sublevel to the overall CPL spectrum, as anticipated by simulations performed in the framework of multireference wave-functions. Hence, the CPL spectra of chiral lanthanide complexes were found to be indeed strongly temperature-dependent, as is the glum dissymmetry factor, as a consequence of the variation in thermal sublevel population.

RESUMO

Here we report magneto-chiral dichroism (MChD) detected through visible and near-infrared light absorption of a chiral dysprosium(III) coordination polymer. The two enantiomers of [DyIII(H6(py)2)(hfac)3]n [H6(py)2 = 2,15-bis(4-pyridyl)ethynylcarbo[6]helicene; hfac- = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonate], where the chirality is provided by a functionalized helicene ligand, were structurally, spectroscopically, and magnetically investigated. Magnetic measurements reveal a slow relaxation of the magnetization, with differences between enantiopure and racemic systems rationalized on the basis of theoretical calculations. When the enantiopure complexes are irradiated with unpolarized light in a magnetic field, they exhibit multiple MChD signals associated with the f-f electronic transitions of DyIII, thus providing the coexistence of MChD-active absorptions and single-molecule-magnet (SMM) behavior. These findings clearly show the potential that rationally designed chiral SMMs have in enabling the optical readout of magnetic memory through MChD.

RESUMO

The interest for chiral tris(ß-diketonato)lanthanide complexes in coordination chemistry is huge due to its Lewis acid character, optical activity, and the control of the final compound architecture. The reaction of equimolar quantities of [Dy((-)/(+)hfc)3 (H2 O)] (hfc- = 3-(heptafluoropropylhydroxymethylene)-(+/-)-camphorate) and L led to the formation of a pair of enantiomers for dinuclear complexes [Dy((-)/(+)hfc)3 (L)]2 ⋅C7 H16 ([(-)/(+)1]⋅C7 H16 ) (L = 4'-(4'''-pyridyl-N-oxide)-1,2':6'1''-bis-(pyrazolyl)pyridine]). Starting from the previous experimental protocol with the addition of bulky BArF anions, a partial dissociation of the chiral [Dy((-)/(+)hfc)3 (H2 O)] was observed leading to the isolation of a mono-dimensional cationic chiral polymer {[Dy((-)/(+)hfc)2 (L)][BarF]}n ⋅nCH3 NO2 ([(-)/(+)2]n ⋅nCH3 NO2 ). Natural circular dichroism (NCD) highlighted an exciton CD couplet for [(-)/(+)2]n but not for (-)/(+)1. The latter behaves as a single-molecule magnet (SMM) with a blocking temperature up to 4 K, whereas [(-)/(+)2]n is a 1D assembly of field-induced SMMs with a magnetic relaxation occurring through a Raman process only.

RESUMO

The reaction between the ((E)-N'-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)pyrazine-2-carbohydrazide) (H2opch) ligand and the metallo-precursor [Dy(hfac)3]·2H2O led to the formation of an homometallic coordination complex with the formula [Dy2(hfac)3(H2O)(Hopch)2][Dy(hfac)4] (1). In presence of both [Dy(hfac)3] 2H2O and the Fe(II) salt, the heterobimetallic tetranuclear [FeDy3(hfac)8(H2O)2(opch)2] (2) was isolated, while the addition of the co-ligand 1,2-Bis(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene) hydrazine (H2bmh) led to the formation of two heterobimetallic tetranuclear complexes with the formula [Fe3Dy(hfac)6(opch)2(H2bmh)] C6H14 (3) C6H14 and [Fe2Dy2(hfac)7(opch)2(H2bmh)] 0.5C7H16 (4) 0.5C7H16. Single crystal X-ray diffraction and dc magnetic investigation demonstrated that 3 and 4 involved the iron center in the +II and +III oxidation states. Dynamic magnetic measurements highlighted the single-molecule magnet behavior of 1 and 2 in a zero applied dc field primarily due to the ferromagnetic interactions taking place in these compounds.

RESUMO

We here present how rebalancing the interplay between H-bonds and dispersive forces (Van der Waals/π-π stacking) may induce or not the generation of kinetic metastable states. In particular, we show that extending the aromatic content and favouring the interchain VdW interactions causes a delay into the cooperative supramolecular polymerization of a new family of toluene bis-amide derivatives by trapping the metastable inactive state.

RESUMO

The combination of physical properties sensitive to molecular chirality in a single system allows the observation of fascinating phenomena such as magneto-chiral dichroism (MChD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) having potential applications for optical data readout and display technology. Homochiral monodimensional coordination polymers of YbIII were designed from a 2,15-bis-ethynyl-hexahelicenic scaffold decorated with two terminal 4-pyridyl units. Thanks to the coordination of the chiral organic chromophore to Yb(hfac)3 units (hfac- =1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylaconate), efficient NIR-CPL activity is observed. Moreover, the specific crystal field around the YbIII induces a strong magnetic anisotropy which leads to a single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour and a remarkable room temperature MChD. The MChD-structural correlation is supported by computational investigations.

RESUMO

The interest for lanthanide circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has been quickly growing for 10 years. However, very few of these studies have involved correlation between the dissymmetry factor (glum ) and the chemical modifications in a series of chiral ligands. Four polymeric compounds of Eu(III) were prepared by using a series of binaphtyl derivatives for which the size of the π system as well as the number of stereogenic elements (i.e., the binaphtyl moiety) are modulated. The resulting {[Eu(hfac)3 ((S)/(R)-Lx )]}n (x = 1 and 3) and {[Eu(hfac)3 ((S,S,S)/(R,R,R)-Lx )]}n (x = 2 and 4) have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction by comparison with the X-ray structures on single crystal of the Dy(III) analogs. In solution, the structure of the complexes is deeply modified and becomes monomeric. The nature of the ligand induces change in the shape of the CPL spectra in CH2 Cl2 solution. Furthermore, a large |glum | = 0.12 of the magnetic-dipole transition for the [Eu(hfac)3 ((S,S,S)/(R,R,R)-L2 )] complex involving the ligand with three stereogenic elements and an extended 𝜋 system has been measured. This report also shows CPL measurements in solid state for the series of {[Eu(hfac)3 ((S)/(R)-Lx )]}n (x = 1 and 3) and {[Eu(hfac)3 ((S,S,S)/(R,R,R)-Lx )]}n (x = 2 and 4) polymers.

RESUMO

The biological properties of sixteen structurally related monoanionic gold (III) bis(dithiolene/ diselenolene) complexes were evaluated. The complexes differ in the nature of the heteroatom connected to the gold atom (AuS for dithiolene, AuSe for diselenolene), the substituent on the nitrogen atom of the thiazoline ring (Me, Et, Pr, iPr and Bu), the nature of the exocyclic atom or group of atoms (O, S, Se, C(CN)2) and the counter-ion (Ph4P+ or Et4N+). The anticancer and antimicrobial activities of all the complexes were investigated, while the anti-HIV activity was evaluated only for selected complexes. Most complexes showed relevant anticancer activities against Cisplatin-sensitive and Cisplatin-resistant ovarian cancer cells A2780 and OVCAR8, respectively. After 48 h of incubation, the IC50 values ranged from 0.1-8 µM (A2780) and 0.8-29 µM (OVCAR8). The complexes with the Ph4P+ ([P]) counter-ion are in general more active than their Et4N+ ([N]) analogues, presenting IC50 values in the same order of magnitude or even lower than Auranofin. Studies in the zebrafish embryo model further showed that, despite their marked anticancer effect, the complexes with [P] counter-ion exhibited low in vivo toxicity. In general, the exocyclic exchange of sulfur by oxygen or ylidenemalononitrile (C(CN)2) enhanced the compounds toxicity. Most complexes containing the [P] counter ion exhibited exceptional antiplasmodial activity against the Plasmodium berghei parasite liver stages, with submicromolar IC50 values ranging from 400-700 nM. In contrast, antibacterial/fungi activities were highest for most complexes with the [N] counter-ion. Auranofin and two selected complexes [P][AuSBu(=S)] and [P][AuSEt(=S)] did not present anti-HIV activity in TZM-bl cells. Mechanistic studies for selected complexes support the idea that thioredoxin reductase, but not DNA, is a possible target for some of these complexes. The complexes [P] [AuSBu(=S)], [P] [AuSEt(=S)], [P] [AuSEt(=Se)] and [P] [AuSeiPr(=S)] displayed a strong quenching of the fluorescence intensity of human serum albumin (HSA), which indicates a strong interaction with this protein. Overall, the results highlight the promising biological activities of these complexes, warranting their further evaluation as future drug candidates with clinical applicability.

RESUMO

Here we report the first experimental observation of magneto-chiral dichroism (MChD) detected through light absorption in an enantiopure lanthanide complex. The P and M enantiomers of [YbIII((X)-L)(hfac)3] (X = P, M; L = 3-(2-pyridyl)-4-aza[6]-helicene; hfac = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonate), where the chirality is held by the helicene-based ligand, were studied in the near-infrared spectral window. When irradiated with unpolarized light in a magnetic field, these chiral complexes exhibit a strong MChD signal (gMChD ca. 0.12 T-1) associated with the 2F5/2 ← 2F7/2 electronic transition of YbIII. The low temperature absorption and MChD spectra reveal a fine structure associated with crystal field splitting and vibronic coupling. The temperature dependence of the main dichroic signal detected up to 150 K allowed, for the first time, the disentanglement of the two main microscopic contributions to the dichroic signal predicted by the MChD theory. These findings pave the way toward probing MChD in chiral lanthanide-based single-molecule magnets.

RESUMO

Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) property is by essence molecular, while commonly measured in solid crystalline state. Solvent crystallization molecules are usually neglected in the analysis and interpretation of solid-state properties. The solvation/desolvation process in the polyoxometalate(POM)-based Na9 [Er(W5 O18 )2 ] ⋅ 35 H2 O SMM demonstrates that the dehydrated form relaxes more than 1000 times faster than the initial state, while the rehydration process allows the quasi complete recovering of the initial magnetic behaviour. This dehydration process is monitored by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and temperature-dependent X-ray powder diffraction, and rationalized by periodic quantum chemical calculations evidencing the tremendous role of the labile water molecules in the stability of the edifice. Ab-initio calculations highlight that sodium ions localization in the structure drive the magnetic responses. Isotopic enrichment with nuclear spin free (166 Er, I=0) ErIII ions shows that the relaxation dynamics in the quantum regime depends on the nuclear spin.

RESUMO

Barium complexes ligated by bulky boryloxides [OBR2 ]- (where R=CH(SiMe3 )2 , 2,4,6-i Pr3 -C6 H2 or 2,4,6-(CF3 )3 -C6 H2 ), siloxide [OSi(SiMe3 )3 ]- , and/or phenoxide [O-2,6-Ph2 -C6 H3 ]- , have been prepared. A diversity of coordination patterns is observed in the solid state for both homoleptic and heteroleptic complexes, with coordination numbers ranging between 2 and 4. The identity of the bridging ligand in heteroleptic dimers [Ba(µ2 -X1 )(X2 )]2 depends largely on the given pair of ligands X1 and X2 . Experimentally, the propensity to fill the bridging position increases according to [OB{CH(SiMe3 )2 }2 )]- <[N(SiMe3 )2 ]- <[OSi(SiMe3 )3 ]- <[O(2,6-Ph2 -C6 H3 )]- <[OB(2,4,6-i Pr3 -C6 H2 )2 ]- . This trend is the overall expression of 3 properties: steric constraints, electronic density and σ- and π-donating capability of the negatively charged atom, and ability to generate Ba ⋅ ⋅ ⋅ F, Ba ⋅ ⋅ ⋅ C(π) or Ba ⋅ ⋅ ⋅ H-C secondary interactions. The comparison of the structural motifs in the complexes [Ae{µ2 -N(SiMe3 )2 }(OB{CH(SiMe3 )2 }2 )]2 (Ae = Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba) suggest that these observations may be extended to all alkaline earths. DFT calculations highlight the largely prevailing ionic character of ligand-Ae bonding in all compounds. The ionic character of the Ae-ligand bond encourages bridging coordination, whereas the number of bridging ligands is controlled by steric factors. DFT computations also indicate that in [Ba(µ2 -X1 )(X2 )]2 heteroleptic dimers, ligand predilection for bridging vs. terminal positions is dictated by the ability to establish secondary interactions between the metals and the ligands.

RESUMO

A family of cyclic phosphine-disiloxane featuring peri-substituted naphthyl(Nap)/acenaphthyl(Ace) scaffolds has been prepared and fully characterized including X-ray structure, which enables a detailed structural analysis. This straightforward synthesis takes advantage of both ortho- and peri-substitution of Nap/Ace-substituted phosphine oxides. The synthetic method allows diversifying the polycyclic aromatic platform (Nap and Ace) as well as the Si substituents (Me and Ph). Despite a strong steric congestion, the P-atom remains reactive toward oxidation or coordination. In particular, Au(I) complex could be prepared. All the compounds display absorption/luminescence in the UV-Vis range. Surprisingly, the P-trivalent derivatives display unexpected luminescence in the green in solid-state.

RESUMO

The straightforward, multigram-scale synthesis of the partially saturated H6 -fluoreno[n]helicenes (n=5 or 7) featuring a central, overcrowded alkene is described. The key cyclization step was based on an intramolecular McMurry reaction from the corresponding 1,5-diketones. Chiral stationary phase HPLC analysis and isomer separation indicate that each helicenic compound is constituted of three diastereoisomers at room temperature, i. e. the configurationally stable (R,R,P)/(S,S,M) pair of enantiomers and an apparently achiral compound resulting from the rapid interconversion between the (R,S,P) and (S,R,M) enantiomers. The partially saturated H6 -fluoreno[n]helicenes are oxidatively aromatized to give an efficient access to the corresponding fluoreno[n]helicenes. The chiroptical properties (vibrational and electronic circular dichroism) of the chiral, enantiopure compounds have been measured and analyzed by quantum-chemical calculations, confirming their helicoidal nature.

RESUMO

A field-induced chiral YbIII Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) displayed an unprecedented near-infrared circularly polarized luminescence (NIR-CPL) in the solid-state. The bridging bis(1,10-phenantro[5,6b])tetrathiafulvalene triad (L) allowed an efficient sensitization of the NIR 2 F5/2 →2 F7/2 emission while the NIR-CPL is associated to the f-f transitions of the YbIII ion bearing chiral ß-diketonate derived-camphorate ancillary ligands.

RESUMO

A water-soluble strapped iron(III)tetraarylporphyrin (FeIIIPor-1) bearing two propylpyridinium groups at the side chains and a carboxylic acid group at the overhanging position of the strap was synthesized to mimic the function of myoglobin with the distal polar functionality in aqueous solution. FeIIIPor-1 forms a stable 1:1 inclusion complex with a per-O-methylated ß-cyclodextrin dimer having a pyridine linker (Py3OCD), providing a hydrophobic environment and a proximal fifth ligand to stabilize the O2-complex. The ferrous complex (FeIIPorCD-1) binds both O2 and CO in aqueous solution. The O2 and CO binding affinities (P1/2O2 and P1/2CO) and half-life time (t1/2) of the O2 complex of FeIIPorCD-1 are 6.3 and 0.021 Torr, and 7 h, respectively, at pH 7 and 25 °C. The control compound without the strap structure (FeIIPorCD-2) has similar oxygen binding characteristics (P1/2O2 = 8.0 Torr), but much higher CO binding affinity (P1/2CO = 3.8 × 10-4 Torr), and longer t1/2 (30 h). The O2 and CO kinetics indicate that the strapped structure in FeIIPorCD-1 inhibits the entrance of these gaseous ligands into the iron(II) center, as evidenced by lower konO2 and konCO values. Interestingly, the CO complex of FeIIPorCD-1 is significantly destabilized (relatively larger koffCO), while the koffO2 value is much smaller than that of FeIIPorCD-2, resulting in significantly increased O2/CO selectivity (reduced M value, where M = P1/2O2/P1/2CO = 320) in FeIIPorCD-1 compared to FeIIPorCD-2 (M = 21000).

RESUMO

The heterometallic cluster-based compound K5[Re5MoSe8(CN)6] was obtained by high-temperature reaction from a mixture of ReSe2 and MoSe2 in molten potassium cyanide. The redox behavior of the [Re5MoSe8(CN)6]5- cluster anion was studied by cyclic voltammetry in aqueous and organic media showing two reversible one-electron-redox transitions with E1/2 of -0.462 and 0.357 V versus Ag/AgCl in CH3CN. Aqueous media potentials were found to be noticeably shifted to higher values because of solvation. Chemically accessible potentials allowed us to structurally isolate and characterize the [Re5MoSe8(CN)6]n (n = 3-, 4-, and 5-) cluster complex in several charge states with corresponding cluster skeletal electron (CSE) numbers ranging from 24 to 22. The electronic absorption of the [Re5MoSe8(CN)6]n cluster complex varies significantly upon a change of the CSE number, especially in the visible and near-IR regions. The local cluster core distortion upon electron removal was confirmed by density functional theory calculation, while the overall geometry of the cluster anion remained practically unaltered.

RESUMO

Five protocols were first compared for the copper-catalyzed C-N bond formation between 7-azaindole and aryl/heteroaryl iodides/bromides. The 1-arylated 7-azaindoles thus obtained were subjected to deprotometalation-iodolysis sequences using lithium 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidide as the base and the corresponding zinc diamide as an in situ trap. The reactivity of the substrate was discussed in light of the calculated atomic charges and the pKa values. The behavior of the 1-arylated 7-azaindoles in direct iodination was then studied, and the results explained by considering the HOMO orbital coefficients and the atomic charges. Finally, some of the iodides generated, generally original, were involved in the N-arylation of indole. While crystallographic data were collected for fifteen of the synthesized compounds, biological properties (antimicrobial, antifungal and antioxidant activity) were evaluated for others.

RESUMO

An expedient access to the first optically pure ruthenium complexes containing C1-symmetric cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene ligands is reported. They demonstrate excellent catalytic performances in asymmetric olefin metathesis with high enantioselectivities (up to 92% ee). Preliminary mechanistic insights provided by density functional theory models highlight the origin of the enantioselectivity.

RESUMO

Well-defined optically pure transition metal (TM) complexes bearing C1- and C2-symmetric N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands were prepared from prochiral NHC precursors. As predicted by DFT calculations, our strategy capitalizes on the formation of a metal-carbene bond which induces an axis of chirality. Configurationally stable atropisomers of various NHC-containing TM complexes were isolated by preparative HPLC on a chiral stationary phase in good yields and excellent optical purities (up to 99.5% ee). The carbene transfer from an optically pure Cu complex to a gold or palladium center reveals, for the first time, a full stereoretentivity, supporting the hypothesis of an associative mechanism for the transmetalation. The potential of these new chiral TM complexes was illustrated in asymmetric catalysis with up to 98% ee.

RESUMO

A stereoselective and convenient route has been demonstrated to access (Z)-1,2-diazido alkenes from the corresponding 1,2-diboronic esters via a copper-mediated reaction with sodium azide. Alternately, mono-functionalization was regioselectively carried out with trimethylsilyl azide as an azidation reactant. The in situ conversion of bis-azides to the corresponding bis-triazoles can be readily achieved in the presence of copper sulfate and sodium ascorbate, while the modification of the catalytic system opened a new convenient route to bis-triazolo-pyrazines, a new class of fused heterocycles.
