RESUMO
BACKGROUND: There are limited population studies on the neurodevelopmental effects of bisphenol F (BPF), a substitute for bisphenol A. Furthermore, the role of placental estradiol as a potential mediator linking these two factors remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between maternal prenatal BPF exposure and infant neurodevelopment in a prospective cohort study and to explore the mediating effects of placental estradiol between BPF exposure and neurodevelopment in a nested case-control study. METHODS: The prospective cohort study included 1077 mother-neonate pairs from the Wuhu city cohort study in China. Maternal BPF was determined using the liquid/liquid extraction and Ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry method. Children's neurodevelopment was assessed at ages 3, 6, and 12 months using Ages and Stages Questionnaires. The nested case-control study included 150 neurodevelopmental delay cases and 150 healthy controls. Placental estradiol levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. Generalized estimating equation models and robust Poisson regression models were used to examine the associations between BPF exposure and children's neurodevelopment. In the nested case-control study, causal mediation analysis was conducted to assess the role of placental estradiol as a mediator in multivariate models. RESULTS: In the prospective cohort study, the pregnancy-average BPF concentration was positively associated with developmental delays in gross-motor, fine-motor, and problem-solving ( ORtotal ASQ: 1.14(1.05, 1.25), ORgross-motor: 1.22(1.10, 1.36), ORfine-motor: 1.19(1.07, 1.31), ORproblem-solving: 1.11(1.01, 1.23)). After sex-stratified analyses, pregnancy-average BPF concentration was associated with an increased risk of neurodevelopmental delays in the gross-motor (ORgross-motor:1.30(1.12, 1.51)) and fine-motor (ORfine-motor: 1.22(1.06, 1.40)) domains in boys. In the nested case-control study, placental estradiol mediated 16.6% (95%CI: 4.4%, 35.0%) of the effects of prenatal BPF exposure on developmental delay. CONCLUSIONS: Our study supports an inverse relationship between prenatal BPF exposure and child neurodevelopment in infancy, particularly in boys. Decreased placental estradiol may be an underlying biological pathway linking prenatal BPF exposure to neurodevelopmental delay in offspring.

INTRODUCTION: Biomonitoring of bisphenol A (BPA) in human blood is still scarce, although already noticeable. We aimed to examine the associations between prenatal serum BPA concentrations and behavior and cognitive function in preschool children. METHODS: A total of 1,782 mother-child pairs with complete demographic information, blood samples, and psychological measurements were included from the China-Anhui Birth Cohort (C-ABCS). We detected serum BPA concentrations and assessed children's neurodevelopment using a set of psychometric scales. RESULTS: The median prenatal maternal serum BPA concentration was 0.23 (P25, P75: 0.07, 0.52) ng/mL, with a detection frequency of 85.19%. Compared with the girls with the lowest concentrations, those with highest BPA concentrations had increased risks of inhibitory self-control impairment [relative risk (RR) = 3.66, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.53, 7.58], emergent metacognition impairment (RR = 1.70, 95% CI: 1.07, 2.78), conduct problem (RR = 1.68, 95% CI: 1.12, 2.39), peer relationship problem (RR = 2.57, 95% CI: 1.33, 4.47), higher total difficulties score (RR = 1.76, 95% CI: 1.12, 2.67), and higher impact factor score (RR = 1.52, 95% CI: 1.11, 2.05), while the boys with the highest prenatal BPA concentrations had an increased risk of conduct problem compared with those with the lowest concentrations (RR = 1.59, 95% CI: 1.09, 2.24) (P-interaction = 0.011). After stratification by age, high prenatal BPA concentrations were associated with increased ADHD (RR = 4.44, 95% CI: 1.54, 10.85) among children aged 3 years, not among children aged 4 years. CONCLUSION: Our study revealed the sex-specific and age-specific impacts of prenatal BPA exposure on preschool children's cognitive and behavioral development.

The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between weekly specific maternal air pollution exposures and low birth weight. We fitted a distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) to analyze the nonlinear exposure-response association and delayed effects of air pollutants on the risk for low birth weight. The model assumed that all live births have 40 gestational weeks. The 1st week lag was the 40th gestational week, and 40th lag week was the 1st gestational week. The study included 71,809 live births (from July 1, 2016, to June 30, 2019), of which 2,391 (3.33%) exhibited low birth weight. The results demonstrated that exposure of pregnant women to PM10 at lag 22-30 weeks was significantly associated with low birth weight risk, with the greatest impact at the lag 30 week. Exposure to SO2 at lag 29-37 weeks was significantly associated with low birth weight risk. The sensitive exposure window for NO2 began at lag 25-37 weeks of pregnancy. The lag 6-10 weeks constituted the susceptible exposure window for O3. Therefore we concluded that maternal exposures to PM10, SO2, NO2, and O3 were associated with increased risk for low birth weight.

Obesity potentially reduces fertility, but systematic reviews are lacking to summarize the existing literature. Therefore, we systematically summarized the association between preconception body mass index (BMI) and fertility in adult female based on existing reports. Up to September 2023, we conducted literature retrievals in different databases, including Web of Science, PubMed, Wiley, and ScienceDirect. Finally, 18 studies were included. Female with overweight/obesity (FOR = 0.85; 95% CI: 0.80, 0.90), obesity (FOR = 0.76; 95% CI: 0.69, 0.83), and overweight (FOR = 0.93; 95% CI: 0.88, 0.99) was associated with the significant time-to-pregnancy (TTP) prolongation (reduced fecundability). Interestingly, underweight was moderately associated with prolonged TTP in females (FOR = 0.95; 95% CI: 0.91, 0.99). Female overweight/obesity was associated with an increased risk of subfecundity (OR = 1.44; 95% CI: 1.20, 1.72) and infertility (OR = 1.60, 95% CI: 1.31-1.94). The findings emphasize the importance of considering appropriate preconception BMI at the population level for female fertility outcomes. In particular, prepregnancy obesity in females is strongly associated with prolonged TTP and increased risk of subfecundity. Scientific management of preconception BMI may improve fertility.

The relation between maternal dietary patterns during pregnancy and offspring behavioral problems is less verified. Therefore, we have aimed to assess the relationship between them and have hypothesized that children of mothers with healthy dietary patterns during pregnancy have better behavior. The 1612 mother-child pairs of the China-Anhui Birth Cohort Study (C-ABCS) have been enrolled as the study population. The dietary behaviors of mothers during early and mid-pregnancy have been investigated using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Preschool child behavioral problems have been assessed. Clusters of maternal food groups intakes have been identified using latent class analysis, and the association between maternal dietary patterns and child behavioral problems has been subsequently analyzed using logistic regression. Maternal age at inclusion is 26.56 ± 3.51 years. There has been a preponderance of boys (53.3%). Maternal food groups intakes have been classified into four groups: "High-consumed pattern (HCP)", "Southern dietary pattern (SDP)", "Northern dietary pattern (NDP)", and "Low-consumed pattern (LCP)". The offspring with maternal SDP and NDP have lower emotional symptoms compared to the offspring with maternal LCP in the first trimester (p < 0.05). It has been reported to lower conduct problems in children with maternal SDP than the children with maternal LCP in the second trimester (p < 0.05). In boys, we have detected associations between first-trimester SDP and lower emotional symptoms (p < 0.05) and between second-trimester SDP with decreased peer relationship problems (p < 0.05). In girls, total difficulty scores are lower with second-trimester SDP (p < 0.05). Maternal SDP in early and mid-pregnancy predicts reduced behavioral problems in preschool children, while maternal HCP and NDP during pregnancy may result in fewer developmental benefits.

INTRODUCTION: The erector spinae plane (ESP) block and thoracolumbar interfascial plane (TLIP) block were two novel plane blocks. The purpose of this study was to investigate TLIP block and ESP block on the effect of analgesic and opioid consumption in lumbar spine fusion surgery in the perioperative period. METHODS: Three hundred and four patients who suffered lumbar spine fusion were included and randomly divided into three groups: a control group (n = 102), an ESP block group (n = 100), and a TLIP block group (n = 102). We recorded the numerical rating scale (NRS) pain at movement and static during the postoperative 48 h, opioid consumption, additional analgesic requirement, frequency of patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) compressions, Bruggemann Comfort Scale (BCS) score, side effects, duration of hospital stay, and the life quality score (LQS) after operation at 6 months. RESULTS: The patients in the ESP block group have better analgesia during 12-48 h postoperative time at static state, a lower frequency of PCA compressions at 24-48 h after surgery, and the opioid consumption in the PCA (sufentanil) were less than those in the TLIP block group (P < 0.05). However, the BCS and LQS scores were no different between the two plane block groups after surgery at 6 months. There was no difference in hospital stay and the incidence of side effect among the three groups. CONCLUSIONS: Our results found that patients who suffered ESP block have better analgesic effects and less pain scores in static states and less frequency of PCA compression and opioid analgesic consumption compared with those that suffered TLIP block. RESUMO
To date, research evidence suggests that extreme ambient temperatures may lead to preterm birth. Since the results of studies in subtropical humid monsoon climate are inconclusive, we investigated the association between extreme ambient temperatures and the risk of preterm birth in Xuzhou, China. We analyzed the association between the birth data of 103,876 singleton deliveries (from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2019) and ambient temperature. We used a quasi-Poisson model with distributed lag nonlinear models (DLNM) to investigate the delay and nonlinear effects of temperature, taking into account the effects of air pollutants and relative humidity. During the study period, the number of hospitalizations for preterm birth was 4623. Taking the median temperature (16.8 °C) as a reference, the highest risk estimate at extreme cold temperature (- 2.8 °C, 1st percentile) was found at lag 0-1 days. Exposure to extreme cold (- 2.8 °C, 1st percentile), or moderate cold (6.8 °C, 25th percentile) were associated with 1.659 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.177-2.338) and 1.456 (95% CI 1.183-1.790) increased risks of preterm birth, respectively. In the further stratified analysis of the age of pregnant women, we found that there were significant associations between cold temperatures and preterm birth in both groups (older group ≥ 35; younger group < 35). In a subtropical humid monsoon climate, low ambient temperatures may lead to preterm birth, suggesting that women should stay away from low temperatures during pregnancy.

Bisphenol AF (BPAF), a kind of the ideal substitutes of Bisphenol A (BPA), has frequently been detected in environmental media and biological samples. Numerous studies have focused on the reproductive toxicity, cardiotoxicity and endocrine disrupting toxicity of BPAF. However, little evidence is available on neurodevelopmental toxicity of BPAF. Here, our study is to evaluate the effect of perinatal BPAF exposure (0, 0.34, 3.4 and 34 mg/kg body weight/day, correspond to Ctrl, low-, medium- and high-dose groups) on the cognitive function of adult mouse offspring. This study firstly found that perinatal BPAF exposure caused cognitive impairments of mouse offspring, in which male offspring was more sensitive than female offspring in low- and medium-dose BPAF groups. Furthermore, the dendritic arborization and complexity of hippocampal CA1 and DG neurons in male offspring were impaired in all BPAF groups, and these effects were only found in high-dose BPAF group for female offspring. The damage of BPAF to dendritic spines, and the structural basis of learning and memory, was found in male offspring but not in females. Correspondingly, perinatal BPAF exposure significantly downregulated the expressions of hippocampal PSD-95 and Synapsin-1 proteins, and male offspring was more vulnerable than female offspring. Meanwhile, we explored the alteration of hippocampal estrogen receptors (ERs) to explain the sex specific impairment of cognitive function in low- and medium-dose BPAF groups. The results showed that perinatal BPAF exposure significantly decreased the expression of ERα in male offspring in a dose-dependent manner, but not in female offspring. In addition, we found that perinatal BPAF exposure can disordered the balance of oxidation and antioxidation in hippocampus of male offspring. In summary, perinatal low-dose bisphenol AF exposure impairs synaptic plasticity and cognitive function of adult offspring in a sex-dependent manner. The present results provide a pierce of potential mechanism of BPAF-caused neurodevelopmental toxicity.

BACKGROUND: Although fast food and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) consumption have been closely linked to childhood and adolescent obesity, the data regarding their co-consumption and relationship to mental health remains controversial. METHODS: A multi-centered population-based survey was conducted among Chinese adolescents from grades 7 to 12. Data about participants' consumption of fast foods and SSBs were obtained from self-reported questionnaires. Psychological symptoms were assessed using the Multi-dimensional Sub-health Questionnaire of Adolescents (MSQA). The association between co-consumption of fast food and SSBs and psychological symptoms was assessed using quantile regression analysis, adjusting for covariates. RESULTS: Approximately one-fifth of the 14,500 participants reported psychological symptoms. The regression coefficient (ß) value increased as the quantile of fast food, SSBs, and co-consumption increased in the quantile regression model, and the model had an excellent goodness-of-fit (F = 192.51, p < 0.001). In the interaction model, fast food and SSBs in combination were associated with greater odds of psychological symptoms (aOR = 1.90, 95% CI: 1.69, 2.12). The synergy index, relative excess risk of interaction, and attributable proportions were 1.86 (95% CI: 1.17, 2.96), 0.4 (95% CI: 0.20, 0.63), and 0.22 (95% CI: 0.11, 0.33), respectively. LIMITATIONS: Information bias is inevitable in self-reported data among participants. The ability to assess causal relationships is reduced by a cross-sectional study design. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that co-consumption of fast food and SSBs was cross-sectionally associated with mental health problems among adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Ultrasound-guided lateral thoracolumbar interfascial plane block (US-TLIP block) is a novel regional technique for anesthesia or analgesia. However, there has been no prospective, randomized and controlled clinical trial investigating the perioperative analgesic effect of US-TLIP block on lumbar spinal fusion surgery. The aim of this study was to investigate the analgesic effect of bilateral single-shot US-TLIP in patients undergoing lumbar spinal fusion surgery. METHODS: A prospective and randomized comparative clinical study was conducted. A total of 60 patients (ASA classes: I-II), aged 21-74 years who were scheduled for lumbar spinal fusion surgery were randomized and divided into the TLIP group (Group T, n = 30) and control group (Group C, n = 30). The patients in Group T received preoperative bilateral single-shot US-TLIP with 30 ml of 0.375% ropivacaine at the third lumbar spine (L3) vertebral level, and the patients in Group C received an injection of 30 ml 0.9% saline through same technique. All patients received patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) after their operation. The frequency of PCA compressions and rescue analgesic administrations were recorded. Opioids (sufentanil and remifentanil), anesthetic consumption, the number of postoperative days spent in a hospital bed, overall hospital stay time and postoperative complications were recorded. The Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Bruggemann Comfort Scale (BCS) scores for pain and comfort assessment were recorded at 1, 12, 24, 36, and 48 hours postoperatively. RESULTS: Opioids and anesthetic consumption in the perioperative period decreased significantly in the TLIP group compared to the control group (P < 0.05). The VAS and BCS scores in the TLIP group were lower at 12, 24, and 36 hours postoperatively (P < 0.05). US-TLIP block has been shown to shorten postoperative hospital stays (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in postoperative complications between the two groups. CONCLUSION: Our study findings show that bilateral US-TLIP block exhibits significant analgesia and safety in patients undergoing lumbar spinal fusion surgery.
