RESUMO

Time-resolved XUV-IR photoion mass spectroscopy of naphthalene conducted with broadband as well as with wavelength-selected narrowband XUV pulses reveals a rising probability of fragmentation characterized by a lifetime of 92 ± 4 fs. This lifetime is independent of the XUV excitation wavelength and is the same for all low appearance energy fragments recorded in the experiment. Analysis of the experimental data in conjunction with a statistical multistate vibronic model suggests that the experimental signals track vibrational energy redistribution on the potential energy surface of the ground-state cation. In particular, populations of the out-of-plane ring twist and the out-of-plane wave bending modes could be responsible for opening new IR absorption channels, leading to enhanced fragmentation.

RESUMO

Rapid energy transfer from electronic to nuclear degrees of freedom underlies many biological processes and astrophysical observations. The efficiency of this energy transfer depends strongly on the complex interplay between electronic and nuclear motions. In this study, we report two-color pump-probe experiments that probe the relaxation dynamics of highly excited cationic states of naphthalene, a prototypical polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecule, which are produced using wavelength-selected, ultrashort extreme ultraviolet pulses. Surprisingly, the relaxation lifetimes increase with the cationic excitation energy. We postulate that the observed effect is the result of a population trapping that leads to delayed relaxation.

RESUMO

A new ion-ion coincidence imaging spectrometer based on a pixelated complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor detector has been developed for the investigation of molecular ionization and fragmentation processes in strong laser fields. Used as a part of a velocity map imaging spectrometer, the detection system is comprised of a set of microchannel plates and a Timepix detector. A fast time-to-digital converter (TDC) is used to enhance the ion time-of-flight resolution by correlating timestamps registered separately by the Timepix detector and the TDC. In addition, sub-pixel spatial resolution (<6 µm) is achieved by the use of a center-of-mass centroiding algorithm. This performance is achieved while retaining a high event rate (104 per s). The spectrometer was characterized and used in a proof-of-principle experiment on strong field dissociative double ionization of carbon dioxide molecules (CO2), using a 400 kHz repetition rate laser system. The experimental results demonstrate that the spectrometer can detect multiple ions in coincidence, making it a valuable tool for studying the fragmentation dynamics of molecules in strong laser fields.

RESUMO

The real time photodissociation dynamics of CH(3)I from the A band has been studied experimentally and theoretically. Femtosecond pump-probe experiments in combination with velocity map imaging have been carried out to measure the reaction times (clocking) of the different (nonadiabatic) channels of this photodissociation reaction yielding ground and spin-orbit excited states of the I fragment and vibrationless and vibrationally excited (symmetric stretch and umbrella modes) CH(3) fragments. The measured reaction times have been rationalized by means of a wave packet calculation on the available ab initio potential energy surfaces for the system using a reduced dimensionality model. A 40 fs delay time has been found experimentally between the channels yielding vibrationless CH(3)(nu=0) and I((2)P(32)) and I(*)((2)P(12)) that is well reproduced by the calculations. However, the observed reduction in delay time between the I and I(*) channels when the CH(3) fragment appears with one or two quanta of vibrational excitation in the umbrella mode is not well accounted for by the theoretical model.
