RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Whole-body cryotherapy (WBC) is used as a conditioning method for athletes. However, the scientific evidence for its effects is still insufficient. OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the effects of transient WBC on the expression of heat shock protein (HSP) 70 and the secretion of related hormones in humans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The participants in this study were six healthy adult men. WBC was performed for 3 min in a booth at a temperature in the range of -150 to -120 degree C, and measurements were taken immediately before (Pre), immediately after (Post), and 60 min after WBC (Post60). For measurement of core body temperature (gastrointestinal temperature), participants ingested a capsule-type wireless temperature sensor. The body surface temperature was measured using a noncontact thermometer, and measurements were taken at four sites on the body surface (chest, abdomen, front of the thigh, and front of the lower thigh). Leukocyte count, lactate dehydrogenase, creatine kinase, hemoglobin, hematocrit, adrenaline, noradrenaline, cortisol, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), erythropoietin, and HSP70 in the collected blood were measured. RESULTS: The results showed a decrease in body surface temperature and an increase in noradrenaline and ACTH immediately after WBC. In addition, the core body temperature decreased 60 min after WBC, accompanied by an increase in HSP70 expression. CONCLUSION: WBC may increase HSP70 expression via noradrenaline and ACTH. The results of this study suggest the usefulness of WBC in triggering protein synthesis and the maintenance of immune function after training. doi.org/10.54680/fr22210110512.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Postural and aerobic exercises are essential in rehabilitation in cystic fibrosis (CF). The aim of this study is to examine the effect of telerehabilitation on the quality of life, depression, and anxiety levels of children with CF and their caregivers' mood and anxiety levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients between the ages of 6-13 with CF were randomized into two groups. Study group received an exercise program three times a week via Zoom for 12 weeks. Cystic Fibrosis Revised Questionnaire (CFQ-R), Anxiety and Depression Scale in Children-Revised (RCADS) were applied to the patients and State-Trait Anxiety Scale (STAI) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were applied to the caregivers in the beginning and at the end of the program. Patients' FEV1 levels and 6-min walk tests were also measured. RESULTS: Twenty-eight patient-caregiver dyads, 14 dyads in each group, completed the study. The initial mean RCADS-Major depressive disorder score of the patients in the exercise group was 6.21 ± 3.11, and this value decreased to 3.92 ± 3.79 at the end of the study and was significantly better (p < 0.02). A similar significant change was observed when the RCADS-generalized anxiety disorder score decreased from the initial mean level of 6.28 ± 2.81 to 3.42 ± 2.65 (p < 0.01). There were significant changes in improvement in the body image in telerehabilitation group. Similar significant changes were not observed in the control group. Caregivers' anxiety and depression levels did not change significantly. CONCLUSION: A short-term telerehabilitation program improved patients' anxiety and depression levels, body image, and functional status. However, caregiver anxiety and depression levels did not change significantly.

RESUMO

Intimate association of peptidergic nerves with lymphocytes of canine and monkey ileal villi was demonstrated by immunohistochemistry and transmission electron microscopy. A swollen, presumably terminal, portion of nerves containing large cored vesicles and small clear vesicles was in direct contact with a lymphocyte. The apposing membranes of the nerve and lymphocyte were thickened and darkened, being separated by a narrow uniform space. The lymphocyte-associated nerves contained immunoreactivity for substance P(SP), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) or vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), localized in large-cored vessels. These result support the hypothesis that peptidergic nerves may play a regulatory role in mucosal immune responses.

RESUMO

Beach debris abundance was estimated from surveys on 10 beaches of the Turkish Western Black Sea Coast. Debris was collected from 20 m long transects during four different seasons; sorted and categorized by type, usage and origin. Litter density varied from 0.085 to 5.058 items m(-2). Debris was mainly composed of unidentifiable small size (2-7 cm) plastic pieces and beverage-related litter such as bottles and bottle caps. About half of the labeled litter was of foreign origin, including 25 different countries, 23% of which are in the Black Sea region. The south-western Black Sea Coast seems to receive foreign litter from two main sources: land-based debris from the neighboring countries and seaborne debris due to international shipping. Standardized methodology and indicators need to be designated all over the Black Sea basin in order to quantify and qualify coastal litter pollution, monitor compliance with MARPOL and develop regionally effective mitigation measures.

RESUMO

A 51-year-old man with a traumatic diaphragmatic rupture is presented. Preoperatively, diaphragmatic rupture and herniation of the stomach into the left thoracic cavity were suspected. Under thoracoscopic guidance, the stomach and omentum were repositioned in the abdominal cavity using Babcock forceps, and then the rupture site was closed using an endoscopic hernia stapler. The postoperative course was uneventful and the patient was discharged from our hospital with no symptoms.

RESUMO

The safety and effectiveness of laparoscopic treatment for incarcerated inguinal hernia have not been clarified. Six patients who underwent laparoscopic reduction and repair of incarcerated inguinal hernias were reviewed retrospectively. All operations were initiated within 1 h after establishment of the diagnosis. Laparoscopically, the incarcerated small-bowel segments could be easily returned to the abdominal cavity by a combination of pulling them with Babcock forceps while pushing back the bowels from outside the abdominal wall. The hernial portals were not cut in three patients, while they were dissected in the other three. All incarcerated bowels were congested and red immediately after reduction; however, their color returned to normal during hernia repair and unnecessary bowel resection was therefore avoided. The mean operation time was 88 min. Although one patient underwent laparotomy because of the suspicion of necrosis of the incarcerated inguinal hernia, which was finally found to be due to postoperative paralytic ileus, the postoperative courses of the remaining five were uneventful. Laparoscopic reduction and repair of incarcerated inguinal hernia was useful, and unnecessary bowel resection could be avoided.
