OBJECTIVE: Pancreatic cancer is a kind of high malignant tumor with a poor prognosis. The aim is to determine whether the dilated bile duct can be used to reconstruct the vessels. METHODS: An animal model of jugular vein and portal vein reconstruction was established using the bile duct. A total of 20 landrace pigs were selected to undergo jugular vein reconstruction or portal vein reconstruction using the bile duct as a patch or bridge. The patency was evaluated by color Doppler, the reconstructed segments were removed and examined macroscopically and histologically at specified intervals, and the results were compared with synthetic vessels (IMPRA straight, 10s03-19). RESULTS: The lumen was patent, although a low level thrombosis was observed when jugular or portal vein patching was used. For bridging, stenosis of the lumen was observed, and necrosis appeared when the bile duct was used for bridging, indicating that it is feasible to reconstruct the jugular vein and portal vein with a bile duct patch. However, the bridge was not feasible possibly due to loss of blood supply, and consequent necrosis and fibrosis. CONCLUSION: The bile duct is technically feasible, but the outcomes are unsatisfactory.

Petroleum-based plastics, such as PP, PE, PVC, etc., have become an important source of environmental pollution due to their hard degradation, posing a serious threat to the human health. Isolating nanocellulose from abundant biomass waste resources and further integrating the nanocellulose into hydrophobic transparent film (i.e., nanopaper), to replace the traditional nondegradable plastic film, is of great significance for solving the problem of environmental pollution and achieving sustainable development of society. This study respectively extracted nanocellulose from the branches of Amorpha fruticosa Linn., wheat straw, and poplar residues via combined mechanical treatments of grinding and high-pressure homogenization. Among them, the nanocellulose derived from the Amorpha fruticosa has a finer structure, with diameter of about 10 nm and an aspect ratio of more than 500. With the nanocellulose as building block, we constructed hydrophilic nanopaper with high light transmittance (up to 90%) and high mechanical strength (tensile strength up to 110 MPa). After further hybridization by incorporating nano-silica into the nanopaper, followed by hydrophobic treatment, we built hydrophobic nanopaper with transmittance over 82% and a water contact angle of about 102° that could potentially replace transparent plastic film and has wide applications in food packaging, agricultural film, electronic device, and other fields.

BACKGROUND: Neuron-specific enolase (NSE) is an important tumor marker in the serum of patients with lung cancer. Elevated serum NSE levels are also associated with many other diseases. However, there is no unified population reference interval for serum NSE. This study aimed to investigate the distribution of serum NSE in healthy Chinese adults aged 20-79 years and to establish its reference interval in Chinese population. METHODS: A total of 10 575 healthy subjects were in line with the requirements of this study. The concentration of serum NSE was detected by a fully automated Cobas e602 analyzer with matching reagents. The population reference interval for serum NSE was established using the unilateral 95th percentile (P95 ) according to standard guidelines. RESULTS: The distributions of serum NSE were not significantly different between males and females (P > 0.05) and also did not differ by age (P > 0.05). Therefore, the population reference interval for serum NSE was established as upper limit 25.4 ng/mL (90% confidence interval: 24.5-26.2 ng/mL). CONCLUSIONS: We established the first population reference interval for serum NSE in a large healthy Chinese adult cohort, which was higher than that recommended by Roche Diagnostics GmbH. This new reference interval is more practical and applicable in Chinese adults.

With the enhancement of people's environmental awareness, waterborne polyurethane (PU) paint-with its advantages of low release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), low temperature flexibility, acid and alkali resistance, excellent solvent resistance and superior weather resistance-has made its application for wood furniture favored by the industry. However, due to its lower solid content and weak intermolecular force, the mechanical properties of waterborne PU paint are normally less than those of the traditional solvent-based polyurethane paint, which has become the key bottleneck restricting its wide applications. To this end, this study explores nanocellulose derived from biomass resources by the 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) oxidation method to reinforce and thus improve the mechanical properties of waterborne PU paint. Two methods of adding nanocellulose to waterborne PU-chemical addition and physical blending-are explored. Results show that, compared to the physical blending method, the chemical grafting method at 0.1 wt% nanocellulose addition results in the maximum improvement of the comprehensive properties of the PU coating. With this method, the tensile strength, elongation at break, hardness and abrasion resistance of the waterborne PU paint increase by up to 58.7%, ~55%, 6.9% and 3.45%, respectively, compared to the control PU; while the glossiness and surface drying time were hardly affected. Such exploration provides an effective way for wide applications of water PU in the wood industry and nanocellulose in waterborne wood coating.

Under a global carbon-neutralizing environment, renewable wood is a viable alternative to non-renewable resources due to its abundance and high specific strength. However, fast-growing wood is hard to be applied extensively due to low mechanical strength and poor dimensional stability and durability. In this study, epoxy-acrylic resin-modified wood was prepared by forming a functional monomer system with three monomers [glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), maleic anhydride (MAN), and polyethylene glycol-200-dimethylacrylic acid (PEGDMA)] and filling into the wood cell cavity. The results showed that in the case of an optimal monomer system of nGMA:nPEGDMA = 20:1 and an optimal MAN dosage of 6%, the conversion rate of monomers reached 98.01%, the cell cavity was evenly filled by the polymer, with the cell wall chemically bonded. Thus, a bonding strength of as high as 1.13 MPa, a bending strength of 112.6 MPa and an impact toughness of 74.85 KJ/m2 were applied to the modified wood, which presented excellent dimensional stability (720 h water absorption: 26%, and volume expansion ratio: 5.04%) and rot resistance (loss rates from white rot and brown rot: 3.05% and 0.67%). Additionally, polymer-modified wood also exhibited excellent wear resistance and heat stability. This study reports a novel approach for building new environmentally friendly wood with high strength and toughness and good structural stability and durability.

OBJECTIVE: The etiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment strategies of chronic pancreatitis (CP) vary significantly between countries. Specifically, the etiology and surgical approaches to treating CP differ between China and Western countries. Therefore, this study aims to compare the disparities in CP profiles and management based on our single-center experience and recent data from the West. METHODS: From January 2007 to December 2017, a total of 130 consecutive patients with histologically confirmed chronic pancreatitis (CP) underwent surgical treatment at the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University. The clinical features, etiology, risk factors, and operative procedures of these CP patients were analyzed and compared with recent data from Western countries. RESULTS: Our patient cohort was predominantly male (3.19:1), with a median age of 50.2 ± 9.8 years. Upper abdominal pain was the most common symptom, present in 102 patients (78.5%). The most common etiology was obstructive factors (47.7%), followed by alcohol (34.6%). The incidence of genic mutation was 2%, significantly lower than rates reported in Western research. Steatorrhea, weight loss, and jaundice were present in 6.9%, 18.5%, and 17.7% of patients, respectively. Pancreatic cysts or pseudocysts were diagnosed in 7 patients (5.4%). The following procedures were performed: Partington procedure in 33 patients (25.4%), Frey procedure in 17 patients (13.2%), Berne procedure in 5 patients (3.9%), Beger procedure in 1 patient (0.8%), pancreaticoduodenectomy in 17 patients (13.1%), pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy in 18 patients (13.9%), middle pancreatectomy in 1 patient (0.8%), and distal pancreatectomy in 9 patients (6.9%). Choledochojejunostomy was performed in 14 patients (10.8%), gastroenterostomy in 2 (1.5%), and 15 patients (11.5%) underwent aspiration biopsy. CONCLUSION: Our study confirms that, etiologically, obstructive chronic pancreatitis (CP) is more frequent in the Chinese population than in Western populations. Although diagnostic instruments and operative procedures in China and Western countries are roughly comparable, slight differences exist in relation to diagnostic flowcharts/criteria and the indications and optimal timing of surgery.

Conducting target ions rapidly while rejecting rival ions efficiently is challenging yet highly demanded for ion separation related applications. Two-dimensional (2D) channels are widely used for ion separation, but highly selective 2D channels generally suffer from a relatively low ionic conductivity. Here we report that the 2D vermiculite channels have a Na+ conductivity higher than bulk and at the same time reject heavy metal ions with a selectivity of a few hundreds. Such performance is attributed to the highly electronegative crystal surface and the extremely narrow channel (0.2 nm high), as also supported by the ab initio molecular dynamics simulation. We demonstrate that the highly selective and conductive sodium channels can be utilized to harvest osmotic power from industrial wastewater, achieving a power density of more than 20 W m-2 while preventing pollution from waste heavy metal ions. This work provides a strategy for wastewater utilization as well as treatment. Moreover, the investigation suggests the possibility to break the ionic permeability-selectivity trade-off by combining Ångstrom-scale confinement with proper surface engineering, which could lead to applications that are challenging for previous materials.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a malignant tumor with high incidence and high risk. Study of the role and mechanism of miRNAs are a hot spot of research providing new treatment ideas in malignant tumors. The effect of miR-642a on HCC progression and the underlying molecular mechanism were investigated. Expression of miR-642a and SEMA4C was measured by western blot analysis and RT-PCR. miR-642a expression was elevated while SEMA4C expression was attenuated in HCC tissues and cells. Results of luciferase reporter and western blot analyses show that miR-642a modulated SEMA4C expression by binding to its 3'UTR. Moreover, miR-642a negatively regulated SEMA4C expression. HCC cell migration and invasion was tested by Transwell assays. The findings revealed that the number of migrated and invaded cells were reduced by miR-642a mimic and raised by miR-642a inhibitor, indicating that miR-642a showed a suppression effect on HCC cell migration and invasion. Additionally, the migration and invasion of HCC cells were inhibited by SEMA4C siRNA, and SEMA4C reversed miR-642a effect on HCC migration and invasion. Furthermore, p38 MAPK signaling pathway was proven to be inhibited by miR-642a mimic, whereas facilitated by miR-642a inhibitor and SEMA4C siRNA could overturn the promotion effect of miR-642a inhibitor. Briefly, miR-642a targeted SEMA4C to repress HCC cell migration and invasion through p38 MAPK signaling pathway providing a new strategy for treatment of HCC patients.
