RESUMO

We report on the synthesis of ß-cyclodextrin (ßCD) modified graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets, having different sized alkyl linkers (GO-Cn -ßCD) and their exploitation as sorbent of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from drinking water. ßCD were functionalized with a pending amino group, and the resulting precursors grafted to GO nanosheets by epoxide ring opening reaction. Loading of ßCD units in the range 12 %-36 % was estimated by combined XPS and elemental analysis. Adsorption tests on perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), a particularly persistent PFAS selected as case study, revealed a strong influence of the alkyl linker length on the adsorption efficiency, with the hexyl linker derivative GO-C6 -ßCD outperforming both pristine GO and granular activated carbon (GAC), the standard sorbent benchmark. Molecular dynamic simulations ascribed this evidence to the favorable orientation of the ßCD unit on the surface of GO which enables a strong contaminant molecules retention.

RESUMO

A gold surface is functionalized by chemisorption of the enantiopure N,N'-bis-[2,2';5',2″]tert-thiophene-5-yl methylcyclohexane-1,2-diamine (2T3N), a chiral oligothiophene derivative, via overnight incubation in a 2T3N ethanol solution. The Au|2T3N interface is characterized by x-ray photoelectron circular dichroism and comparing x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and electro-desorption results. Charge transmission at the Au|2T3N| solution interface is characterized by recording the cyclic voltammetry of the Fe(III)/Fe(II) reversible redox couple, finding a charge transfer rate constant, k°, variation from 1 × 10-1 to 3.3 × 10-2 cm s-1, when comparing the bare Au and the Au|2T3N interfaces, respectively. The "anomalous" high value of k° found for the chiral Au|2T3N interface can be rationalized on the basis of the chiral-induced spin selectivity effect, as further proved by magnetic-conductive atomic force microscopy measurements at room temperature. A spin polarization of about 30% is found.

RESUMO

We present an environmentally benign methodology for the covalent functionalization (arylation) of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets with arylazo sulfones. A variety of tagged aryl units were conveniently accommodated at the rGO surface via visible-light irradiation of suspensions of carbon nanostructured materials in aqueous media. Mild reaction conditions, absence of photosensitizers, functional group tolerance and high atomic fractions (XPS analysis) represent some of the salient features characterizing the present methodology. Control experiments for the mechanistic elucidation (Raman analysis) and chemical nanomanipulation of the tagged rGO surfaces are also reported.

RESUMO

We herein address the problem of polymorph selection by introducing a general and straightforward concept based on their ordering. We demonstrated the concept by the ordered patterning of four compounds capable of forming different polymorphs when deposited on technologically relevant surfaces. Our approach exploits the fact that, when the growth of a crystalline material is confined within sufficiently small cavities, only one of the possible polymorphs is generated. We verify our method by utilizing several model compounds to fabricate micrometric "logic patterns" in which each of the printed pixels is easily identifiable as comprising only one polymorph and can be individually accessed for further operations.

RESUMO

Microwave (MW) accelerated synthesis combined with microfiltration (MF) on commercial hollow fiber modules enables fast and scalable preparation of highly pure modified graphene oxide nanosheets. The MW-MF procedure is demonstrated on polyethylenimine (PEI) modified GO, and the so-obtained GOPEI is used for simultaneous removal of arsenic and lead from water.

RESUMO

Versatile synthetic methods towards a variety of thiophene-nucleobase hybrid systems are reported. Adenine- and thymine-based modified nucleosides characterized by a bithiophene unit linked to the C5' or C8 position through an ethylenamino or an ethylensulfanyl bridge were synthesized and successfully polymerized in the presence of FeCl(3) . The self-organization properties of the pure polymers as well as their mixtures - with complementary nucleobases - were investigated by means of optical microscopy and AFM in cast film showing complex supramolecular structures resulting from the interplay of multiple intermolecular interactions.

RESUMO

By applying femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy to a substituted quinquethiophene molecule in solution, we observe in the time domain the coherent torsional dynamics that drives planarization of the excited state. Our interpretation is based on numerical modeling of the ground and excited state potential energy surfaces and simulation of wavepacket dynamics, which reveals two symmetric excited state deactivation pathways per oscillation period. We use the acquired knowledge on torsional dynamics to coherently control the excited state population with a pump-dump scheme, exploiting the non-stationary Franck-Condon overlap between ground and excited states.

RESUMO

Here we applied a novel concept of "sublimation-aided nanostructuring" to control the polymorphism of a model material. The process exploits fractional precipitation as a tool for crystallisation in confinement using a templating agent that sublimes away from the system at the end of the process.

RESUMO

The fluorescent dye perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PBA) was immobilized onto polysulfone hollow fibers by means of a wet coating procedure. After immobilization, PBA was able to react with primary amines through a double anhydride ring opening reaction. The in situ amine coupling was further revealed by fluorescence analysis. Both emission (534 nm →538 nm) and fluorescence lifetime changes (2.7 ns →3.3 ns) of the dye are a useful tool to detect and visualize the occurrence of the reaction. The successful implementation of amine coupling with a reporting function on polysulfone fibers holds great interest for biomedical applications.

RESUMO

The graphene oxide (GO) assisted allylic alkylation of thiophenes with alcohols is presented. Mild reaction conditions and a low GO loading enabled the isolation of a range of densely functionalized thienyl and bithienyl compounds in moderate to high yields (up to 90%). The cooperative action of the Brønsted acidity, epoxide moieties, and π-surface of the 2D-promoter is highlighted as crucial in the reaction course of the present Friedel-Crafts-type protocol.

RESUMO

Blends of an electron donor, i.e. a regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), with electron acceptors, a series of soluble quinquethiophene-S,S-dioxides (T5Os) bearing different alkyl side groups were self-assembled at surfaces. Scanning Force Microscopy (SFM) studies revealed that while the T5O symmetrically functionalized with two hexyl groups in the central thiophene (1) self-organizes into micrometer sized crystals embedded in a grainy matrix of P3HT, by substituting the central thiophene of 1 with one hexyl and one methyl unit (2) smaller and less anisotropic crystals of the acceptor having a sub-micrometer scale size were formed. The generation of these crystals is due to the joint effect of different non-covalent intermolecular interactions between the T5Os that self-segregate from the P3HT. By derivatizing the compound 1 with cyclo-hexyl moieties in the four external thiophenes molecule 3 was obtained. Such system was found to assemble into grainy disordered structures when co-deposited with P3HT, providing evidence for the absence of a phase segregation between the two components. Generally, the self-assembly at surfaces is governed by the interplay of intramolecular as well as intermolecular and interfacial interactions. In the present case, the cyclo-hexyl side groups in 3 both induce an intramolecular loss of planarity of the thiophene rings and hinders intermolecular interactions, reducing the tendency of the molecules to self-associate forming large crystals, whereas the symmetrical functionalization of the two central thiophenes with hexyl chains favours the crystallization of the T5O. The reported results demonstrate that subtle differences in the chemical functionalization can lead to different types of molecular architectures at surfaces. This is of importance since controlling the self-organization of pi-conjugated molecules at surfaces towards pre-programmed assemblies is a viable approach to enhance their electronic and luminescent properties, which should help to improve the performance of organic devices.

RESUMO

We report the design, synthesis and structure-property investigation of a new perylene diimide material (PDI-Lys) bearing lysine end substituents. Water processed films of PDI-Lys were prepared and their self-assembly, morphology and electrical properties in both inert and air environments were theoretically and experimentally investigated. With the aim of evaluating the potential of PDI-Lys as a biocompatible and functional neural interface for organic bioelectronic applications, its electrochemical impedance as well as the adhesion and viability properties of primary neurons on the PDI-Lys films were studied. By combining theoretical calculations and electrical measurements we show that due to conversion between neutral and zwitterionic anions, the PDI-Lys film conductivity increased significantly upon passing from air to an inert atmosphere, reaching a maximum value of 6.3 S m-1. We also show that the PDI-Lys film allows neural cell adhesion and neuron differentiation and decreases up to 5 times the electrode/solution impedance in comparison to a naked gold electrode. The present study introduces an innovative, water processable conductive film usable in organic electronics and as a putative neural interface.

RESUMO

Lysinated molecular organic semiconductors are introduced as valuable multifunctional platforms for neural cells growth and interfacing. Cast films of quaterthiophene (T4) semiconductor covalently modified with lysine-end moieties (T4Lys) are fabricated and their stability, morphology, optical/electrical, and biocompatibility properties are characterized. T4Lys films exhibit fluorescence and electronic transport as generally observed for unsubstituted oligothiophenes combined to humidity-activated ionic conduction promoted by the charged lysine-end moieties. The Lys insertion in T4 enables adhesion of primary culture of rat dorsal root ganglion (DRG), which is not achievable by plating cells on T4. Notably, on T4Lys, the number on adhering neurons/area is higher and displays a twofold longer neurite length than neurons plated on glass coated with poly-l-lysine. Finally, by whole-cell patch-clamp, it is shown that the biofunctionality of neurons cultured on T4Lys is preserved. The present study introduces an innovative concept for organic material neural interface that combines optical and iono-electronic functionalities with improved biocompatibility and neuron affinity promoted by Lys linkage and the softness of organic semiconductors. Lysinated organic semiconductors could set the scene for the fabrication of simplified bioorganic devices geometry for cells bidirectional communication or optoelectronic control of neural cells biofunctionality.

RESUMO

A new class of nanostructured hybrid materials is developed by direct grafting of a model thiophene-based organic dye on the surface of 3C-SiC/SiO2 core/shell nanowires. TEM-EDX analysis reveals that the carbon distribution is more spread than it would be, considering only the SiC core size, suggesting a main contribution from C of the oligothiophene framework. Further, the sulfur signal found along the treated wires is not detected in the as-grown samples. In addition, the fluorescent spectra are similar for the functionalized nanostructures and T3Pyr in solution, confirming homogeneous molecule grafting on the nanowire surface. Chemical and luminescence characterizations confirm a homogeneous functionalization of the nanowires. In particular, the fluorophore retains its optical properties after functionalization.

RESUMO

We present a new strategy to realize self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on quartz and silicon with a multicolour fluorescence pattern starting from a single, proton sensitive oligothiophene dye exposed at a defined pH. Fine tuning of the SAMs emission color over the entire visible range, including white, is demonstrated. Finally, integration of SAMs in patterned thin layer cells (TLCs) is exploited to demonstrate cation sensing potential in real devices.

RESUMO

We report on the fabrication of the first bicolor micropixelated OLED from a single molecular material using a single-step bottom up procedure. The implementation of a deposition technique, based on a spatial-switch and conformational-sensitive STD surface-tension-driven lithography, has allowed us to exploit the spontaneous supramolecular properties and the conformational flexibility of a conjugated thiophene-based material, 6-bis-(50-hexyl-[2, 20]bithiophen-5-yl)-3, 5-dimethyl-dithieno[3, 2-b; 20, 30-d]thiophene (DTT7Me). The existence of two regularly alternating emitting regions on a micrometer scale allows obtaining electroluminescent emission at two different wavelengths from a single material.

RESUMO

DPY and DPE alkylenesulfanyl-bridged bithienyls were prepared by a highly effective ring-closing reaction via arylalkylsulfonium intermediate and used as inner cores in oligothiophenes. HOMO-LUMO energy levels, conformational flexibility, and intrinsic asymmetry of the cores are reflected in the electronic, film-forming, and thermal properties of the corresponding oligomers.
