RESUMO

In the livestock sector, strategies are available to mitigate gas emissions, such as methane, one of the alternatives that have shown potential correspondence to changes in the composition of the diet. The main aim of this study was to analyze the influence of methane emissions with data on enteric fermentation obtained from the Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval (EDGAR) database and based on forecasts of methane emissions by enteric fermentation with an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model and the application of statistical tests to identify the association between methane emissions from enteric fermentation and the variables of the chemical composition and nutritional value of forage resources in Colombia. The results reported positive correlations between methane emissions and the variables ash content, ethereal extract, neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and acid detergent fiber (ADF) and negative correlations between methane emissions and the variables percentage of unstructured carbohydrates, total digestible nutrients (TDN), digestibility of dry matter, metabolizable energy (MERuminants), net maintenance energy (NEm), net energy gain (NEg), and net lactation energy (NEI). The variables with the most significant influence on the reduction of methane emissions by enteric fermentation are the percentage of unstructured carbohydrates and the percentage of starch. In conclusion, the analysis of variance and the correlations between the chemical composition and the nutritive value of forage resources in Colombia help to understand the influence of diet variables on methane emissions of a particular family and with it in the application of strategies of mitigation.

RESUMO

The supernumerary mostly dispensable B chromosomes are nuclear components of about 15% of eukaryotic phyla. For a long time, B chromosomes have been studied, generating an enormous bulk of knowledge, diluted in the vastness of the scientific literature. In order to provide better access to this information, we created B-chrom ( www.bchrom.csic.es ), an online database with comprehensive information on Bs for plants, animals, and fungi. It was released in 2017 and first updated in 2021, by adding 334 entries and 123 new species. Currently, the resource provides information for 2951 species coming from 3292 sources. During this time, the usefulness of this database has been proven by the number of visits (more than 207,000 since its release) and by the scientific community, having been cited in more than 60 publications until present. This chapter explains the database composition and tips on how to use it.

RESUMO

The advancements in research in the field of plant cytogenetics and genomics in recent decades have led to a significant increase in publications. To simplify access to the widely dispersed data, there has been a rise in the number of online databases, repositories, and analytical tools. This chapter presents a comprehensive overview of these resources, which can be beneficial to researchers in these areas. It includes, among others, databases on chromosome numbers, special chromosomes (such as B chromosomes or sex chromosomes), some of which are taxon-specific; genome sizes, cytogenetics; and online applications and tools for genomic analysis and visualization.

RESUMO

This paper presents the latest update to the Plant rDNA database (Release 4.0), a valuable resource for researchers in the field of plant cytogenetics. The database provides information on the number, position, and arrangement of ribosomal DNA loci in plants, including angiosperms, gymnosperms, bryophytes, and pteridophytes. The new release includes new data for 820 species coming from additional 173 papers. In the updated version of the Plant rDNA database, 4948 entries comprising 2760 organisms can be found. A brief guide on how to navigate the database and obtain the desired information is also provided. The regular updating of the database is important for ensuring the information it contains is accurate, up-to-date, and useful for the research community. The Plant rDNA database continues to be beneficial for phylogenetic and cytogenetic studies in a wide range of taxa including angiosperms, gymnosperms, and early diverging groups, such as bryophytes and lycophytes.

RESUMO

Trace elements can be toxic when they cannot be easily removed after entering an ecosystem, so a long-term assessment is fundamental to guide ecosystem restoration after catastrophic pollution. In 1998, a pyrite mining accident in Aznalcóllar (south-western Spain) spilled toxic waste over a large area of the Guadiamar river basin, where, after restoration tasks, the Guadiamar Green Corridor was established. Eight years after the mine accident (2005-2006), the ground-dwelling insectivorous lizard Psammodromus algirus registered high trace-element levels within the study area compared to specimens from a nearby unpolluted control site. In 2017, 20 years after the accident, we repeated the sampling for this lizard species and also quantified trace elements in vegetation as well as in arthropod samples in order to identify remnant trace-element accumulation with the aim of assessing the transfer of these elements through the trophic web. We found remnant trace-element contamination in organisms of the polluted site compared to those from the unpolluted site. All trace-element concentrations were higher in arthropods than in plants, suggesting these compounds bioaccumulate through the trophic web. Lizards from the polluted areas had higher As, Cd, and Hg concentrations than did individuals from the unpolluted area. Lizard abundance between sampling periods (2005-06 and 2017) did not vary in unpolluted transects but strongly declined at polluted ones. By contrast, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index indicated that in the study period, the vegetation was similar at the two sampling sites. These results suggest that, 20 years after the accident, the trace-element pollution could be the cause of a severe demographic decline of the lizard in the polluted area.

RESUMO

Clinical decision support systems (CDSS) have been designed, implemented, and validated to help clinicians and practitioners for decision-making about diagnosing some diseases. Within the CDSSs, we can find Fuzzy inference systems. For the reasons above, the objective of this study was to design, to implement, and to validate a methodology for developing data-driven Mamdani-type fuzzy clinical decision support systems using clusters and pivot tables. For validating the proposed methodology, we applied our algorithms on five public datasets including Wisconsin, Coimbra breast cancer, wart treatment (Immunotherapy and cryotherapy), and caesarian section, and compared them with other related works (Literature). The results show that the Kappa Statistics and accuracies were close to 1.0% and 100%, respectively for each output variable, which shows better accuracy than some literature results. The proposed framework could be considered as a deep learning technique because it is composed of various processing layers to learn representations of data with multiple levels of abstraction.
