RESUMO
The chemistry of contrast agents (CAs) for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) applications is an active area of research and, in recent work, it was shown that CA-based graphene oxide (GO) has valuable properties for biomedical uses. GO has a potential as MRI CAs thanks to several functionalities, like its ability to penetrate tissues and cell membranes, as well as easy coupling with therapeutic agents, therefore showing the potential for both a diagnostic and therapeutic role. In this study, we performed a thorough cleaning of the GO sample (synthesized using a modified Hummers method), minimizing the amount of residual manganese down to 73 ppm. Using a wide range of physical-chemical methods (morphology, chemical composition, elemental analysis, spectroscopies, and imaging), we characterized the intrinsic longitudinal and transverse relaxivities of highly purified GO nanosheets. X-band electron paramagnetic resonance allowed to recognize the paramagnetic species involved, and 1.0 T MRI was used to disentangle the relative contributions to the MRI contrast of pristine GO nanosheets arising from structural defects and residual paramagnetic manganese impurities embedded in the nanomaterial. Although experiments show that the MRI relaxivity of GO nanosheets arises from the cumulative effect of structural defects and paramagnetic impurities, we conclude that the latter contribution to the longitudinal and transverse relaxivities becomes irrelevant for highly purified (pristine) GO. This novel finding clearly demonstrates that, apart from trivial manganese inclusion, pristine GO produces an inherent MRI response via structural defects, and therefore it is on its own a suitable candidate as MRI contrast agent.
RESUMO
This theoretical study presents the design and analytical/numerical optimization of novel dual-channel transverse fields radiofrequency (RF) surface coils for 1.5 T Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The research explores a planar setup with two channels on a row with aligned spatial orientation of the RF coils, aiming to solve a common design drawback of single-channel transverse field RF coils: the reduced Field Of View (FOV) along the direction of the RF field. A significant challenge in this design is the efficient decoupling of two sets of transverse field RF coils to prevent mutual interference. Our modeling approach integrates thin wire theoretical modeling, magnetostatic computation for strip conductor coils, and their full-wave electromagnetic simulation. Key findings at 64 MHz demonstrate that strategic geometric placement among the two-channel RF coil and the introduction of geometrical asymmetry in the design of the individual RF coils does minimize the mutual inductance, paving the way for effective dual-channel MRI applications. This decoupling approach allows to enhance the FOV, providing a theoretical framework for the development of optimized dual-channel transverse field RF coil configurations. The current design was validated with full-wave numerical study at 64 MHz (1H, 1.5 T), has the potential to be extended at lower or higher frequencies, and the presence of lossy samples needs to be considered in the latter case.
RESUMO
Radiofrequency (RF) coils are key components in Magnetic Resonance (MR) systems and can be categorized into volume and surface coils according to their shapes. Volume RF coils can generate a uniform field in a large central sample's region, while surface RF coils, usually smaller than volume coils, typically have a higher Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) in a reduced Region Of Interest (ROI) close to the coil plane but a relatively poorer field homogeneity. Circular and square loops are the simplest and most used design for developing axial field surface RF coils. However, for specific MR applications, the use of dedicated transverse field RF coils can be necessary or advantageous. Building on a previously developed and validated RF coil simulator, based on the magnetostatic approach, here we explore the potential applications of novel multiple axial field and transverse field surface RF coils in non-standard configurations. We demonstrate via numerical simulations that simple volume RF coils, matching a Helmholtz-like design, can be built with two identical transverse field RF coils separated by a given distance. Following well-known principles, the SNR of such novel configurations can be improved by a factor of up to â2 by combining two 90° rotated coils, producing, inside a central ROI, a circularly polarized B1 field.

OBJECTIVES: American-style football (ASF) athletes are at risk for the development of concentric left ventricular hypertrophy (C-LVH), an established cardiovascular risk factor in the general population. We sought to address whether black race is associated with acquired C-LVH in collegiate ASF athletes. METHODS: Collegiate ASF athletes from two National Collegiate Athletic Association Division-I programmes were recruited as freshmen between 2014 and 2019 and analysed over 3 years. Demographics (neighbourhood family income) and repeated clinical characteristics and echocardiography were recorded longitudinally at multiple timepoints. A mixed-modelling approach was performed to evaluate acquired C-LVH in black versus white athletes controlling for playing position (linemen (LM) and non-linemen (NLM)), family income, body weight and blood pressure. RESULTS: At baseline, black athletes (N=124) were more often NLM (72% vs 54%, p=0.005) and had lower median neighbourhood family income ($54 119 vs $63 146, p=0.006) compared with white athletes (N=125). While both black and white LM demonstrated similar increases in C-LVH over time, among NLM acquired C-LVH was more common in black versus white athletes (postseason year-1: N=14/89 (16%) vs N=2/68 (3%); postseason year-2: N=9/50 (18%) vs N=2/32 (6%); postseason year-3: N=8/33 (24%) vs N=1/13 (8%), p=0.005 change over time). In stratified models, black race was associated with acquired C-LVH in NLM (OR: 3.70, 95% CI 1.12 to 12.21, p=0.03) and LM was associated with acquired C-LVH in white athletes (OR: 3.40, 95% CI 1.03 to 11.27, p=0.048). CONCLUSIONS: Independent of family income and changes in weight and blood pressure, black race was associated with acquired C-LVH among collegiate ASF NLM and LM was associated with acquired C-LVH in white athletes.

The unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) model of Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most commonly used in rodents. The anatomical, metabolic, and behavioral changes that occur after severe and stable 6-OHDA lesions have been extensively studied. Here, we investigated whether early motor behavioral deficits can be observed in the first week after the injection of 6-OHDA into the right substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc), and if they were indicative of the severity of the dopaminergic (DAergic) lesion in the SNc and the striatum at different time-points (day 1, 3, 5, 7, 14, 21). With this aim, we used our newly modified tail suspension swing test (TSST), the standard rotation test (RT), and immunohistochemical staining for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH). The TSST, but not the standard RT, revealed a spontaneous motor bias for the 6-OHDA-lesioned rats from the day 1 post-surgery. Both tests detected the motor asymmetry induced by (single and repeated) apomorphine (APO) challenges that correlated, in the first week, with the DAergic neuronal degeneration. The described TSST is fast and easy to perform, and in the drug-free condition is useful for the functional assessment of early motor asymmetry appearing after the 6-OHDA-lesion in the SNc, without the confounding effect of APO challenges.

Truffles of the Tuber genus (Pezizales, Ascomycetes) are among the most valuable and expensive foods, but their shelf life is limited to 7-10 days when stored at 4 °C. Alternative preservation methods have been proposed to extend their shelf life, though they may alter certain quality parameters. Recently, a hypogeal display case equipped with an ultrasonic humidity system (HDC) was developed, extending the shelf life to 2-3 weeks, depending on the truffle species. This study assesses the efficacy of HDC in preserving Tuber melanosporum and Tuber borchii ascomata over 16 days, using quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (QMRI) to monitor water content and other parameters. Sixteen T. melanosporum and six T. borchii ascomata were stored at 4 °C in an HDC or a static fridge (SF) as controls. QMRI confirmed that T. borchii has a shorter shelf life than T. melanosporum under all conditions. HDC reduced the rate of shrinkage, water, and mass loss in both species. Additionally, the Apparent Diffusion Coefficient (ADC), longitudinal relaxation time (T1), and transverse relaxation time (T2), which reflect molecular changes, decreased more slowly in HDC than SF. QMRI proves useful for studying water-rich samples and assessing truffle preservation technologies. Further optimization of this method for industrial use is needed.
RESUMO
Aliphatic chlorinated hydrocarbons, notably tetrachloroethylene (also known as perchloroethylene [PCE]), are persistent, mobile, and toxic (PMT) and/or very persistent, mobile, and toxic (vPMT) groundwater pollutants, often exceeding safe drinking water thresholds. The present study delves into the groundwater risk assessment of PCE with a novel focus on the sensitivity of stygobitic species-organisms uniquely adapted to groundwater environments. Through a comparative analysis of the subchronic effects of PCE on the locomotion behavior of two copepod species, the stygobitic Moraria sp. and the nonstygobitic Bryocamptus zschokkei, we highlighted the inadequacy of the current European predicted-no-effect concentration of PCE for groundwater ecosystems. Our findings indicate significant behavioral impairments in both species at a concentration (32 ng/L PCE) well below the threshold deemed safe, suggesting that the current European guidelines for groundwater risk assessment may not adequately protect the unique biodiversity of groundwater habitats. Importantly, B. zschokkei demonstrated sensitivity to PCE comparable to or greater than that of the target stygobitic species, suggesting its utility as a substitute species in groundwater risk assessment. The present study adds to the limited research on the ecotoxicological sensitivity of groundwater species to PMT/vPMT chemicals and highlights the need for refined groundwater risk-assessment methodologies that consider the susceptibilities of stygobitic species. RESUMO
INTRODUCTION: Fast and accurate diagnosis of acute stroke is crucial to timely initiate reperfusion therapies. Conventional high-field (HF) MRI yields the highest accuracy in discriminating early ischaemia from haemorrhages and mimics. Rapid access to HF-MRI is often limited by contraindications or unavailability. Low-field (LF) MRI (<0.5T) can detect several types of brain injury, including ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke. Implementing LF-MRI in acute stroke care may offer several advantages, including extended applicability, increased safety, faster administration, reduced staffing and costs. This multicentric prospective open-label trial aims to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of LF-MRI, as a tool to guide treatment decision in acute stroke. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Consecutive patients accessing the emergency department with suspected stroke dispatch will be recruited at three Italian study units: Azienda Sanitaria Locale (ASL) Abruzzo 1 and 2, Istituto di Ricerca e Cura a Carattere Scientifico (IRCCS) Humanitas Research Hospital. The estimated sample size is 300 patients. Anonymised clinical and LF-MRI data, along with conventional neuroimaging data, will be independently assessed by two external units: Marche Polytechnic University and 'G. Martino' Polyclinic University Hospital. Both units will independently adjudicate the best treatment option, while the latter will provide historical HF-MRI data to develop artificial intelligence algorithms for LF-MRI images interpretation (Free University of Bozen-Bolzano). Agreement with conventional neuroimaging will be evaluated at different time points: hyperacute, acute (24 hours), subacute (72 hours), at discharge and chronic (4 weeks). Further investigations will include feasibility study to develop a mobile stroke unit equipped with LF-MRI and cost-effectiveness analysis. This trial will provide necessary data to validate the use of LF-MRI in acute stroke care. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Abruzzo Region (CEtRA) on 11 May 2023 (approval code: richyvgrg). Results will be disseminated in peer-reviewed journals and presented in academic conferences. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT05816213; Pre-Results.

PURPOSE: Recently, new MRI systems working at magnetic field below 10 mT (Very and Ultra Low Field regime) have been developed, showing improved T1-contrast in projected 2D maps (i.e. images without slice selection). Moving from projected 2D to 3D maps is not trivial due to the low SNR of such devices. This work aimed to demonstrate the ability and the sensitivity of a VLF-MRI scanner operating at 8.9 mT in quantitatively obtaining 3D longitudinal relaxation rate (R1) maps and distinguishing between voxels intensities. We used phantoms consisting of vessels doped with different Gadolinium (Gd)-based Contrast Agent (CA) concentrations, providing a set of various R1 values. As CA, we used a commercial compound (MultiHance®, gadobenate dimeglumine) routinely used in clinical MRI. METHODS: 3D R1 maps and T1-weighted MR images were analysed to identify each vessel. R1 maps were further processed by an automatic clustering analysis to evaluate the sensitivity at the single-voxel level. Results obtained at 8.9 mT were compared with commercial scanners operating at 0.2 T, 1.5 T, and 3 T. RESULTS: VLF R1 maps offered a higher sensitivity in distinguishing the different CA concentrations and an improved contrast compared to higher fields. Moreover, the high sensitivity of 3D quantitative VLF-MRI allowed an effective clustering of the 3D map values, assessing their reliability at the single voxel level. Conversely, in all fields, T1-weighted images were less reliable, even at higher CA concentrations. CONCLUSION: In summary, with few excitations and an isotropic voxel size of 3 mm, VLF-MRI 3D quantitative mapping showed a sensitivity better than 2.7 s-1 corresponding to a concentration difference of 0.17 mM of MultiHance in copper sulfate doped water, and improved contrast compared to higher fields. Based on these results, future studies should characterize R1 contrast at VLF, also with other CA, in the living tissues.

Background Clinically relevant aortic dilatation (>40 mm) and increased cardiovascular risk are common among retired professional American-style football athletes. Among younger athletes, the effect of American-style football participation on aortic size is incompletely understood. We sought to determine changes in aortic root (AR) size and associated cardiovascular phenotypes across the collegiate career. Methods and Results This was a multicenter, longitudinal repeated-measures observational cohort study of athletes across 3 years of elite collegiate American-style football participation. A total of 247 athletes (119 [48%] Black, 126 [51%] White, 2 [1%] Latino; 91 [37%] linemen, 156 [63%] non-linemen) were enrolled as freshmen and studied at pre- and postseason year 1, postseason year 2 (N=140 athletes), and postseason year 3 (N=82 athletes). AR size was measured with transthoracic echocardiography. AR diameter increased over the study period from 31.7 (95% CI, 31.4-32.0) to 33.5 mm (95% CI, 33.1-33.8; P<0.001). No athlete developed an AR ≥40 mm. Athletes also demonstrated increased weight (cumulative mean Δ, 5.0 [95% CI, 4.1-6.0] kg, P<0.001), systolic blood pressure (cumulative mean Δ, 10.6 [95% CI, 8.0-13.2] mm Hg, P<0.001), pulse wave velocity (cumulative mean Δ, 0.43 [95% CI, 0.31-0.56] m/s, P<0.001), and left ventricular mass index (cumulative mean Δ, 21.2 [95% CI, 19.2-23.3] g/m2, P<0.001), and decreased E' velocity (cumulative mean Δ, -2.4 [95%CI, -2.9 to -1.9] cm/s, P<0.001). Adjusting for height, player position, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure, higher weight (ß=0.030, P=0.003), pulse wave velocity (ß=0.215, P=0.02), and left ventricular mass index (ß=0.032, P<0.001) and lower E' (ß=-0.082, P=0.001) were associated with increased AR diameter. Conclusions Over the collegiate American-style football career, athletes demonstrate progressive AR dilatation associated with cardiac and vascular functional impairment. Future studies delineating aortic outcomes are necessary to determine whether AR dilation is indicative of maladaptive vascular remodeling in this population.

Background Ventricular-arterial (VA) coupling is defined as the ratio between arterial elastance (EA) and left ventricular elastance (ELV). VA uncoupling, as occurs in hypertensive heart disease, is associated with adverse outcomes. This study sought to determine the relationship between American football (AF)-associated hypertension and VA uncoupling. Methods and Results This was a multicenter, longitudinal, and repeated measures observational study of collegiate AF athletes across 3 years of AF participation. Of 200 freshman athletes initially enrolled, 142 (67 Black [47%]/75 White [53%], 58 linemen [41%]/84 nonlinemen [59%]) were prospectively studied with echocardiography and applanation tonometry. Primary echocardiographic VA coupling outcome measures were EA/ELV and ΔEA/ELV, with increased EA/ELV indicating VA uncoupling. Adjusting for race and player position, AF athletes demonstrated increased EA/ELV (mean [95% CI]Δ, 0.10 [0.04-0.15]; P=0.001) and systolic blood pressure (SBP) (mean [95% CI]Δ, 11.4 [8.3-14.5] mm Hg, P<0.001) over their collegiate AF careers. In combination with longitudinal VA uncoupling, hypertension prevalence (including both stage 1 and 2) increased from 54% at baseline to 77% (44% stage 2) at the end of the study period (P<0.001). In multivariable mixed-effects linear regression analysis, higher SBP (ß=0.021, P=0.02), lower E' (ß=-0.010, P=0.03), and worse global longitudinal strain (ß=0.036, P<0.001) were associated with higher EA/ELV. Increased SBP (ΔSBP, ß=0.029, P=0.02) and worsened global longitudinal strain (Δglobal longitudinal strain, ß=0.045, P<0.001) also predicted increased ΔEA/ELV. Conclusions VA uncoupling is associated with pathologically increased SBP and subclinical impairments in left ventricular systolic function in collegiate AF athletes, indicating a key mechanism underlying maladaptive cardiovascular phenotypes observed in this population. Future studies analyzing whether targeted clinical interventions improve VA coupling and health outcomes are warranted.

The birdcage Radio Frequency (RF) coil is one of the most used configurations in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanners for the detection of the proton (1H) signal over a large homogeneous volume. More recently, birdcage RF coils have been successfully used also in the field of X-nuclei MRI, where the signal of a second nucleus (e.g. 13C, 23Na, 31P, and many others) needs to be detected with high sensitivity and spatial homogeneity. To this purpose several technical solutions have been adopted to design Double Tuned (DT) volume RF coils, including the recent configuration of the nested birdcage RF coils. One of the main problems in the design of DT RF coils is the decoupling between the 1H and X channels, and a number of solutions have been adopted over the years. In this work, based on numerical and workbench methods, we report the decoupling optimization of DT (1H/23Na) nested RF birdcage coils suitable for 2.35 T MRI scanners encompassing an inner Low-Pass (LP) birdcage used for X-nuclei, an outer High-Pass (HP) birdcage for 1H and an external cylindrical RF shield. We show that a suitable geometrical selection of the two coaxial RF birdcage coils (relative angular orientation, diameters and lengths) and RF shield (diameter, length) allows a significant decoupling optimization. We also provide valuable information about the RF B1+ field homogeneity and efficiency. Our approach was validated both with numerical simulations and workbench testing using DT nested RF coil prototypes.

OBJECTIVE: A systematic analytical approach to design Spiral Resonators (SRs), acting as distributed magnetic traps (DMTs), for the decoupling of concentric Double-Tuned (DT) RF coils suitable for Ultra-High Field (7 T) MRI is presented. METHODS: The design is based on small planar SRs placed in between the two RF loops (used for signal detection of the two nuclei of interest). We developed a general framework based on a fully analytical approach to estimate the mutual coupling between the RF coils and to provide design guidelines for the geometry and number of SRs to be employed. Starting from the full-analytical estimations of the SRs geometry, electromagnetic simulations for improving and validating the performance can be carried out. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: We applied the method to a test case of a DT RF coil consisting of two concentric and coplanar loops used for 7 T MRI, tuned at the Larmor frequencies of the proton (1H, 298 MHz) and sodium (23Na, 79 MHz) nuclei, respectively. We performed numerical simulations and experimental measurements on fabricated prototypes, which both demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed design procedure. SIGNIFICANCE: The decoupling is achieved by printing the SRs on the same dielectric substrate of the RF coils thus allowing a drastic simplification of the fabrication procedure. It is worth noting that there are no physical connections between the decoupling SRs and the 1H/23Na RF coils, thus providing a mechanically robust experimental set-up, and improving the transceiver design with respect to other traditional decoupling techniques.

INTRODUCTION: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes and reportedly overused in American-style football (ASF). However, assessment of ASF NSAID use in the context of cardiovascular risk has not been performed. We sought to characterize NSAID use patterns and the association with cardiovascular risk in a diverse cohort of high school and collegiate ASF athletes. METHODS: A total of 226 ASF athletes, 60 endurance athletes, and 63 nonathletic controls were studied pre- and postseason with echocardiography, vascular applanation tonometry, and clinical data assessment. Qualitative NSAID use throughout the season was recorded at postseason. RESULTS: ASF athletes gained weight (Δ0.86 ± 3.9 kg, P < 0.001), increased systolic blood pressure (SBP, Δ3.1 ± 12 mm Hg, P < 0.001) and pulse wave velocity (Δ0.2 ± 0.6 m·s, P < 0.001), and decreased E' (Δ-1.4 ± 2.8 cm·s, P < 0.001) across one athletic season. Seventy-seven percent (n = 173) of ASF athletes reported that sport-specific NSAID use began in middle school. ASF NSAID use was more frequent with "weekly" (n = 42.19%) and "daily" (n = 32.14%) use compared with endurance athletes (P < 0.001) and controls (P = 0.02). ASF NSAID use increased in parallel with postseason SBP and weights. "Daily" ASF NSAID users demonstrated the highest postseason SBP (137 ± 13 vs 128 ± 13 mm Hg, P = 0.002) and weight (109.0 ± 18.6 vs 95.8 ± 20.5 kg, P = 0.002) compared with "never/rare" users. Adjusting for player position, SBP, pulse wave velocity, and E', increased weight (odds ratio = 1.04, 95% confidence interval = 1.0-1.08, P = 0.037) was associated with more frequent NSAID use. CONCLUSIONS: Habitual NSAID use commonly begins during adolescence, before full physical maturation, and is associated with cardiovascular risk, particularly increased weight, in ASF athletes. NSAID use frequency should be considered when risk stratifying high-risk ASF athletes.

A growing concern for contamination due to pharmaceutical compounds in groundwater is expanding globally. The ß-blocker propranolol is a ß-adrenoceptors antagonist commonly detected in European groundwater bodies. The effect of propranolol on stygobiotic species (obligate groundwater dweller species) is compelling in the framework of environmental risk assessment (ERA) of groundwater ecosystems. In fact, in Europe, ERA procedures for pharmaceuticals in groundwater are based on data obtained with surrogate surface water species. The use of surrogates has aroused some concern in the scientific arena since the first ERA guideline for groundwater was issued. We performed an ecotoxicological and a behavioural experiment with the stygobiotic crustacean species Diacyclops belgicus (Copepopda) to estimate a realistic value of the Predicted No Effect Concentration (PNEC) of propranolol for groundwater ecosystems and we compared this value with the PNEC estimated based on EU ERA procedures. The results of this study showed that i) presently, propranolol does not pose a risk to groundwater bodies in Europe at the concentrations shown in this study and ii) the PNEC of propranolol estimated through the EU ERA procedures is very conservative and allows to adequately protect these delicate ecosystems and their dwelling fauna. The methodological approach and the results of this study represent a first contribution to the improvement of ERA of groundwater ecosystems.

The basal ganglia circuitry plays a crucial role in the sequential organization of behavior. Here we studied the behavioral structure of the animals after 21 days of 6-OHDA-induced lesion of the dopaminergic nigrostriatal system. Frequencies and durations of individual components of the behavioral repertoire were calculated; moreover, whether a temporal organization of the activity was present, it was investigated by using T-pattern analysis, a multivariate approach able to detect the real-time sequential organization of behavior. Six sham-depleted and six rats with unilateral 6-OHDA-lesion of the Substantia Nigra pars compacta were used. As to quantitative evaluations, the comparison between lesioned and unlesioned rats revealed significant differences only for the mean occurrences of Walking, Immobile Sniffing and Stretched Sniffing, reduced in lesioned subjects. All the remaining components of the behavior did not show significant changes. On the other hand, results from T-pattern analysis showed a reduction of the number of different T-patterns, of their mean length and of their occurrences in 6-OHDA-lesioned rats. Overall, these results suggest that the main deficit in 6-OHDA-lesioned subjects, rather than in the production of individual behavioral components, lies in deficiencies of their sequential organization.

Importance: Former US football athletes are at increased risk of cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality compared with the general population and other professional athletes. However, responsible maladaptive CV phenotypes have not been fully characterized. Objective: To address the emergence and progression of multiple independent factors associated with CV risk across serial years of collegiate US football participation. Design, Setting, and Participants: Collegiate US football athletes from 2 National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I programs were recruited as freshmen between June 2014 and June 2017 and analyzed at multiple points throughout 3 complete years of collegiate US football participation (until January 2019). Excluded athletes were those who did not complete any season of US football training because of injury, illness, or leaving the team. Factors associated with CV risk assessed clinically, by transthoracic echocardiography, and by vascular applanation tonometry were recorded. Exposures: The exposure of interest was seasonal US football exposure, including training, competition, and the training environment. Main Outcomes and Measures: Primary outcome measures were left ventricular mass index and geometry (cardiac structure), early diastolic myocardial relaxation velocity (E'; diastolic function), and pulse-wave velocity (arterial stiffness). Results: Of 186 individuals recruited as freshmen, 126 athletes were included in analyzed data. Collegiate US football athletes (62 white individuals [49%]; 63 black individuals [50%]; 77 nonlinemen [61%]; 49 linemen [39%]; 126 male individuals [100%]) weighed a mean (SD) of 101.1 (21.0) kg, with a mean systolic blood pressure of 129.1 (11.6) mm Hg at baseline of the freshman season. Adjusting for race, height, and player position, there were significant increases in weight (mean [SE] Δ, 4.74 [0.6] kg; P < .001), systolic blood pressure (mean [SE] Δ, 11.6 [1.6] mm Hg; P < .001), and pulse-wave velocity (mean [SE] Δ, 0.24 [0.09] m/s; P = .007), and significant declines in E' (mean [SE] Δ, -1.7 [0.3] cm/s; P < .001) across 3 years of US football participation. Weight gain was associated with both arterial stiffening (increased pulse-wave velocity, ß = 0.01 [SE, 0.004]; P = .003) and the development of concentric left ventricular hypertrophy (odds ratio, 1.09 [95% CI, 1.05-1.14]; P < .001); increased systolic blood pressure was also associated with arterial stiffening (ß = 0.01 [SE, 0.003]; P = .007) and the development of concentric left ventricular hypertrophy (odds ratio, 1.04 [95% CI, 1.01-1.07]; P = .02). Conclusions and Relevance: Collegiate US football athletes who gain weight and develop increased systolic blood pressure levels are at risk for the development of a pathologic CV phenotype characterized by concentric left ventricular hypertrophy, arterial stiffening, and reduced left ventricular diastolic function. Future work aimed at optimizing CV health in this population, who are young but uniquely at risk, is warranted.

The basal ganglia consist of a variety of subcortical nuclei engaged in motor control and executive functions, such as motor learning, behavioral control, and emotion. The striatum, a major basal ganglia component, is particularly useful for cognitive planning of purposive motor acts owing to its structural features and the neuronal circuitry established with the cerebral cortex. Recent data indicate emergent functions played by the striatum. Indeed, cortico-striatal circuits carrying motor information are paralleled by circuits originating from associative and limbic territories, which are functionally integrated in the striatum. Functional integration between brain areas is achieved through patterns of coherent activity. Coherence belonging to cortico-basal ganglia circuits is also present in Parkinson's disease patients. Excessive synchronization occurring in this pathology is reduced by dopaminergic therapies. The mechanisms through which the dopaminergic effects may be addressed are the object of several ongoing investigations. Overall, the bulk of data reported in recent years has provided new vistas concerning basal ganglia role in the organization and control of movement and behavior, both in physiological and pathological conditions. In this review, basal ganglia functions involved in the organization of main movement categories and behaviors are critically discussed. Comparatively, the multiplicity of Parkinson's disease symptomatology is also revised.

PURPOSE: American-style football (ASF) participation rates in the United States are highest among high school (HS) athletes. This study sought to compare the cardiovascular response to HS versus collegiate ASF participation. METHODS: The ASF participants (HS, n = 61; collegiate, n = 87) were studied at preseason and postseason time points with echocardiography and applanation tonometry. Primary outcome variables included: left ventricular (LV) mass index, LV diastolic function (early relaxation velocity [E']), and arterial stiffness (pulse wave velocity [PWV]). RESULTS: High school (17.1 ± 0.4 yr) and collegiate ASF participants (18 ± 0.4 yr) experienced similar LV hypertrophy (ΔLV mass HS = 10.5 ± 10 vs collegiate = 11.2 ± 13.6 g·m, P = 0.97). Among HS participants, increases in LV mass were associated with stable diastolic tissue velocities (ΔE' = -0.3 ± 2.9 cm·s, P = 0.40) and vascular function (ΔPWV = -0.1 ± 0.6 m·s, P = 0.13). In contrast, collegiate participants demonstrated a higher burden of concentric LV hypertrophy (21/87, 24% vs 7/61, 11%, P = 0.026) with concomitant reductions in diastolic tissue velocities (ΔE': -2.0 ± 2.7 cm·s, P < 0.001) and increased arterial stiffness (ΔPWV: Δ0.2 ± 0.6 m·s, P = 0.003), changes that were influenced by linemen who had the highest post-season weight (124 ± 10 kg) and systolic blood pressure ([SBP], 138.8 ± 11 mm Hg). In multivariable analyses adjusting for age and ethnicity, body mass was an independent predictor of post-season PWV (ß estimate = 0.01, P = 0.04) and E' (ß estimate = -0.04, P = 0.05), whereas SBP was an independent predictor of postseason LV mass index (ß estimate = 0.18, P = 0.01) and PWV (ß estimate = 0.01, P = 0.007). CONCLUSIONS: The transition from HS to college represents an important physiologic temporal data point after which differential ASF cardiovascular phenotypes manifest. Future work aimed to clarify underlying mechanisms, and the long-term clinical implications of these findings is warranted.

This study sought to determine the cardiovascular physiologic correlates of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in American-style football (ASF) participants using echocardiography, vascular applanation tonometry, and peripheral arterial tonometry. Forty collegiate ASF participants were analyzed at pre- and postseason time points with echocardiography and vascular applanation tonometry. WatchPAT (inclusive of peripheral arterial tonometry) used to assess for SDB was then performed at the postseason time point. Twenty-two of 40 (55%) ASF participants demonstrated SDB with an apnea-hypopnea index (pAHI) ≥5. ASF participants with SDB were larger (109 ± 20 vs 92 ± 14 kg, p = 0.004) and more likely linemen position players (83% vs 50%, p = 0.03). Compared with those without SDB, ASF participants with SDB demonstrated relative impairments in left ventricular diastolic and vascular function as reflected by lower lateral e' (14 ± 3 vs 17 ± 3 cm/s, p = 0.007) and septal e' (11 ± 2 vs 13 ± 2 cm/s, p = 0.009) tissue velocities and higher pulse wave velocity (5.4 ± 0.9 vs 4.8 ± 0.5 m/s, p = 0.02). In the total cohort, there were significant positive correlations between pAHI and pulse wave velocity (r = 0.42, p = 0.008) and inverse correlations between pAHI and the averaged e' tissue velocities (r = -0.42, p = 0.01). In conclusion, SDB is highly prevalent in youthful collegiate ASF participants and associated with relative impairments in cardiac and vascular function. Targeted efforts to identify youthful populations with SDB, including ASF participants, and implement SDB treatment algorithms, represent important future clinical directives.
