RESUMO

In the late 19th century, British women were struggling to enter the dental profession. From a young age, Lilian Lindsay was determined to become a qualified dentist. This paper describes her struggles and successes in attaining her goal, which was reached in 1895 when she became the first, female, qualified dentist. The paper then continues to highlight her subsequent career.

RESUMO

David Forman worked as a general dental practitioner for many years. However, he eventually gave it up as his early hobbies took over his life. RESUMO

The Royal Dental Hospital and School were founded in 1858/59 as the UK's first dental school. Despite being a leading school, because of government strictures it closed its doors in 1985. The building was taken over by a hotel. Not to be forgotten, however, a group of alumni ensured its memory by obtaining a Green Plaque to be placed on its walls.

RESUMO

So often we hear cries of 'Well what do you expect, he or she had a terrible start in life." Given away soon after birth, didn't know its mother until nine years of age, brought up a mother's acquaintance but was not told. This paper examines how that fits with the life of Dame Margaret Seward, one of the outstanding members of the British dental profession, male or female.

RESUMO

The first dental qualification in the UK was awarded by the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1860. From then on dentistry was closely aligned with, and partly under the thumb, of the medical profession. It thus differed from the USA. Over the years there was slow separation, resulting in 2021 in a new College of General Dentistry.

RESUMO

Many successful dentists and doctors enjoy a wide variety of hobbies, including music. Some are avid listeners; others play instruments as amateurs or even professionals; sometimes they sing. A few are recording artists. Their interests might be classical or modern, including jazz. This paper examines the musical lives of a few general practitioners, hospital dentists and academics in the United Kingdom. Clearly striving for success in one's profession leaves room for other activities.

RESUMO

Guy's Hospital and its dental school have an illustrious history. It is the hospital where the first known UK lecture on dentistry was delivered to students in 1799. This paper examines its history and involvement with general and specialist children's dentistry, for which many dental staff helped to raise clinical standards. Interestingly, a number of leading graduates went to the USA for postgraduate study, more than from any other UK school. Many were financed by a travelling bursary endowed by the founding Dean, Frederick Newland-Pedley and have returned to be major players on the British scene, some in children's dentistry.By its very nature this research cannot claim to be exhaustive. Hopefully other researchers will add further information.

RESUMO

Books relating to dental care of children go back many years. This includes care by mothers and the rise of good clinical treatments and prevention by dentists. Most early books were written by a single author. As dentistry developed it became necessary to bring in writers with specialist knowledge, for example on dental materials. In 1952 Walter McBride wrote that children were sometimes described as being "temperamental and hysterical, notional and incorrigible". Many practitioners saw them as small adults and offered little treatment. Often they had no idea how to comfort children (Fig. 1). Some dental offices displayed notices that children under the age of 12 years would not be seen. Advice on handling was needed. Books were needed to encourage more dentists to treat children and to raise standards amongst practitioners already treating them. This paper documents and discusses early books that have appeared since 1853. Although of course much care advanced with increased knowledge and skills, it is fascinating to see how much we might still recognize today from the earliest publications.

RESUMO

This paper demonstrates how the International Association of Paediatric Dentistry (IAPD) arose from small beginnings in 1967. What started as an International Forum on Child Dental Health in London grew to become first the International Association of Dentistry for Children and then the outstanding IAPD with biennial Congresses, regional meetings, cooperation with other children's organizations, Teach the Teachers programmes, a wonderful website, and this International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry. There are now 70 national member societies worldwide representing over 16 000 members with a single interest: to further the oral health care of children. It is a truly remarkable achievement.

RESUMO

This paper follows the story of an immigrant from Germany who came via South America to settle in the United States, Hannelore Loevy. She became a leading pediatric dentist, researcher, and advocate for women in dentistry, as well as a lauded dental historian. Dr. Hannelore Loevy was well respected in both the USA and abroad. Her love of the profession is demonstrated by the wide variety of positions she occupied and honors she received.

RESUMO

This paper is based on a talk given at a dinner hosted by the American Academy of the History of Dentistry. It examines some early efforts towards dental education and training on both sides of the Atlantic. For British attendees I dealt (and thus in this paper) especially with the roles of Horace Hayden and Chapin Harris in developing formal dental training in the United States of America. For Americans, I contrast those developments with how dentistry arose in the United Kingdom. Major figures such as John Tomes were involved, with close links to surgery. The first qualifications in the USA were degrees whereas in the UK they were Royal College of Surgeons diplomas, degrees only being awarded from 1906.

RESUMO

For many people, being a parent of five children is more than enough to keep oneself occupied. Mitzi Coyle (Macey-Dare) did that, and gained a top post in the community dental service, with a string of dental and other postgraduate qualifications. Her children are equally talented.

RESUMO

Peter Barton enjoyed a rare achievement: distinction in science and the arts. He was an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, a painter, musician and philosopher, with a sharp intellect and questioning mind. A true polymath.
