BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Melanoma is a highly malignant skin tumor. Accurate segmentation of skin lesions from dermoscopy images is pivotal for computer-aided diagnosis of melanoma. However, blurred lesion boundaries, variable lesion shapes, and other interference factors pose a challenge in this regard. METHODS: This work proposes a novel framework called CFF-Net (Cross Feature Fusion Network) for supervised skin lesion segmentation. The encoder of the network includes dual branches, where the CNNs branch aims to extract rich local features while MLPs branch is used to establish both the global-spatial-dependencies and global-channel-dependencies for precise delineation of skin lesions. Besides, a feature-interaction module between two branches is designed for strengthening the feature representation by allowing dynamic exchange of spatial and channel information, so as to retain more spatial details and inhibit irrelevant noise. Moreover, an auxiliary prediction task is introduced to learn the global geometric information, highlighting the boundary of the skin lesion. RESULTS: Comprehensive experiments using four publicly available skin lesion datasets (i.e., ISIC 2018, ISIC 2017, ISIC 2016, and PH2) indicated that CFF-Net outperformed the state-of-the-art models. In particular, CFF-Net greatly increased the average Jaccard Index score from 79.71% to 81.86% in ISIC 2018, from 78.03% to 80.21% in ISIC 2017, from 82.58% to 85.38% in ISIC 2016, and from 84.18% to 89.71% in PH2 compared with U-Net. Ablation studies demonstrated the effectiveness of each proposed component. Cross-validation experiments in ISIC 2018 and PH2 datasets verified the generalizability of CFF-Net under different skin lesion data distributions. Finally, comparison experiments using three public datasets demonstrated the superior performance of our model. CONCLUSION: The proposed CFF-Net performed well in four public skin lesion datasets, especially for challenging cases with blurred edges of skin lesions and low contrast between skin lesions and background. CFF-Net can be employed for other segmentation tasks with better prediction and more accurate delineation of boundaries.

The use of seaweeds as additives in animal nutrition may be a valid option to traditional feed as they represent a rich source of minerals, carbohydrates and antioxidants. The aim of this study was to analyze the chemical composition and in vitro antioxidant capacity of two tropical eucheumatoids, Kappaphycus alvarezii and Kappaphycus striatus, in Malaysian wild offshore waters. The chemical analysis was performed via inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy for evaluating the concentration of toxic (Cd, Pb, Hg, As) and essential elements (Mn, Fe, Cu, Ni, Zn, Se); NMR spectroscopy was used for carrageenans investigation. Furthermore, the soluble and fat-soluble antioxidant capacities were determined by FRAP, DPPH and ABTS assays. The chemical analysis revealed a higher content of trace elements in K. alvarezii as compared to K. striatus, and both exhibited a high mineral content. No significant differences in metal concentrations were found between the two species. Both samples showed a mixture of prevailing κ- and t-carrageenans. Finally, the levels of soluble and fat-soluble antioxidants in K. alvarezii were significantly higher than in K. striatus. Our findings suggest that K. alvarezii could be used as a potential feed additive because of its favorable chemical and nutritional features.

Loranthus europaeus is a well-known and important medicinal plant, with a long history of traditional medicine use. Several studies showed that it contains many bioactive compounds with a wide range of pharmacological effects. In light of these past researches, L. europaeus were chosen to consider its potential antimicrobial action. To this aim, different protocols were performed to selectively extract protein compounds, from L. europaeus yellow fruits, and evaluate the antimicrobial activity against four phytopathogenic fungi (Aspergillus niger, Alternaria spp., Penicillium spp., Botritis cinereus) and a number of foodborne bacterial pathogens (Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus strains, Salmonella Typhimurium and Escherichia coli) by using serial dilutions and colony formation assays. Results evidenced no antifungal activity but a notable bactericidal efficiency of a crude protein extract against two foodborne pathogens, with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values between 0.2 and 0.5 mg/mL, being S. aureus strains the most susceptible bacteria. Moreover, a strong bactericidal activity against S. aureus M7 was observed by two partially purified protein fractions of about 600 and 60 kDa molecular mass in native conditions. Therefore, these plant protein extracts could be used as natural alternative preventives to control food poisoning diseases and preserve foodstuff avoiding health hazards of chemically antimicrobial applications.

The detection of diatoms into the organs is considered an important "biological marker" for the diagnosis of drowning in human pathology, but it still has a high possibility for false positive results. The aims of this study were: (1) to evaluate the contribution of pathological examination in drowning cases and (2) to investigate the differences in the number and location of diatoms between animals who died in drowning and non-drowning conditions. For these purposes, 30 dead adult dogs were selected for the study and subdivided into five groups. The group A comprised six cadavers dead for drowning; the group B comprised six control animals; the groups C, D, and E comprised six animals dead for causes other than drowning and subsequently immersed in water for 24, 48, and 72 h, respectively. On each animal, a complete macroscopic and histological examination and diatom test were performed. Diatoms test and quantification were also performed on drowning mediums. Pathological findings of the animals in the group A showed pulmonary congestion, oedema, and hemorrages in the lung. However, similar injuries were also observed in control and experimentally submerged cadavers. In contrast, we observed a statistically differences between drowning animals and all experimentally submerged groups and control animals regarding diatom numbers recovered from organ tissue samples (p < 0.05). Therefore, these findings suggest that the number of diatoms may be used as a valid tool to differentiate animals who died in drowning and non-drowning conditions, even if the latter were found in an aquatic environment.

Intestinal strongyles are the most common endoparasites of horses, and anthelmintic treatments are the main strategy to control these nematodes. However, the development of anthelmintic resistance has led to a decreased efficacy of synthetic drugs, and for this reason, there is a growing interest in alternative control strategies as the use of medicinal plants. The aim of the present study was to determine the in vivo efficacy of garlic (Allium sativum) in horses naturally infected by intestinal strongyles. The field trial was conducted in a horse trotter farm in Southern Italy. Fifteen mares were selected based on fecal egg count >200 eggs per gram and allocated into three groups of five animals: fresh garlic group (FG group), animals received 40 g of fresh crushed garlic once daily for 15 days; dry garlic group (DG group), animals received 40 g of commercial dry garlic flakes food supplement once daily for 15 days; and control group (C group), not treated. Two weeks after the first administration of garlic, fecal egg count reduction test showed failure of garlic to reduce intestinal strongyles egg shedding (-11.7% and -19.4% for FG and DG groups, respectively). Red blood cell count values were in the normal ranges over the entire period of garlic administration. In our study model, the oral administration of garlic formulations has no effect on reducing the egg shedding of intestinal strongyles, and the garlic supplementation over a short period of time is not responsible for hematological changes in horses.

The mammalian Insula is characterised by considerable morphologic variability, however, it shows a cytoarchitectonic homogeneity within the species so far studied. Three cytoarchitectonic areas are generally recognisable in the Insula: an "agranular", a "dysgranular" and a "granular" area. The numerous functions attributed to the Insula (visceral sensory, visceral motor, somatosensorial, supplementary motor area, area speech and/or language related, etc.) have recently attracted renewed interest. Considering the involvement of the Insula in the control of gastroenteric motility and the structural and functional complexity of this region in ruminants, it seemed interesting to analyse the cyto- and myelo-architectonic arrangement of the Insula of the bull, Bos taurus. Unlike that of the other species described, all the insular Neocortex of the bull, is of the "agranular" type. The latter includes at least four variants that differ according to the organisation of the cortical layer pattern. Considering the available evidence in laboratory animals and primates of a role played by the agranular insular cortex in gastroenteric motility control, the trademark presence of a very much extended insular agranular cortex in the Insula of the bull may be related to the necessity of motor activity control of a gastroenteric complex that is extensively more developed than in the monogastric species.

The topographical distribution of the enteric ganglia has been investigated in the proventriculus of the duck using protein gene product 9.5 (PGP 9.5) immunohistochemistry. Myenteric ganglia were usually located between the outer longitudinal and the inner circular muscle layer. Submucous ganglia were sparsely distributed and seemed to be substituted by ganglia located in the tunica mucosa. The neurochemical profile of proventricular ganglion cells was also investigated using nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate reduced-diaphorase (NADPH-d)-histochemistry and pituitary adenylate cyclase activating peptide (PACAP)/galanin (Gal) double-labelling immunohistochemistry. The majority of mucosal ganglion cells were shown to contain the NADPH-d enzyme and both the investigated peptides. These findings provide evidence for the presence of a mucosal ganglionated plexus in the glandular stomach of birds. Moreover, the neurochemical characteristics of this plexus suggest that it plays an important role in regulating several mucosal functions and, in particular, the production and the composition of the gastric juice.

Autonomic nerves supplying mammalian male internal genital organs have an important role in the regulation of reproductive function. To find out the relationships between the neurochemical content of these nerves and the reproductive activity, we performed a histochemical and immunohistochemical study in a species, the water buffalo, exhibiting a seasonal sexual behaviour. The distribution of noradrenergic and nitric oxide synthase (NOS)- and peptide-containing nerves was evaluated during the mating and non-mating periods. Fresh segments of vas deferens and accessory genital glands were collected immediately after slaughter and immersed in 4% paraformaldehyde. Frozen sections were obtained and processed according to single and double labelling immunofluorescent procedures or NADPH-diaphorase histochemistry. During the mating period, a dense noradrenergic innervation was observed to supply the vas deferens as well as the accessory genital glands. NOS- and peptide-containing nerves were also observed but with a lower density. During the non-mating period noradrenergic nerves dramatically reduced. In addition, neuropeptide Y (NPY)- and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP)-containing nerves were also reduced. These findings suggest the presence of complex interactions between androgen hormones and the autonomic nerve supply in the regulation of male water buffalo reproductive functions.

A reconstruction of the morphological features of domestic pigs from two Roman settlements is here suggested by means of the study of skeletal and dental remains, with the aim at evaluating their degree of selection in comparison with wild boars. Material was formed by 111 bone and tooth fragments and was uncovered during the excavations of Polybius' House in Pompeii and of Roman buildings in the neighbourhood of Caralis harbour (Sardinia). The remains underwent morphological examination. The eruption of permanent teeth and ossification of epiphyseal cartilages let us establish that most animals were over 18-20 months. When possible, the determination of sex was made by detecting tusk features. The presence of anthropic signs on the bone surface provides some information about slaughtering and cooking procedure in the Roman period and supports the hypothesis that the animal remnants were food remains. Osteometric analysis was carried out on long and short bones and teeth through suitable multiplicative parameters, leading to the assessment of the withers height and other main phenotypic features. Logarithmic deviation pointed out the significant osteometric differences between the domestic pigs from the two Roman settlements. These data were also compared with those from wild boars and modern crossbred wild boars X non-selected pigs. In conclusion, our data show that pigs from Caralis bear much resemblance to wild boars, whereas those from Pompeii appear to be improved, so sharing some phenotypic features of modem improved breeds.
