RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To know the facilitating factors of the transition process from dependency to the self-care of people with a stoma. METHOD: This is a descriptive study of qualitative approach, including 27 people with permanent stomas due to cancer. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews and submitted to content analysis based on the Transition Theory as theoretical reference. RESULTS: The self-care facilitators related to the person were the positive significance of ostomy; the preparation for this experience already in the preoperative period; emotional stability; faith; religiousness; and a sense of normalcy acquired from a next image similar to the previous one. The facilitators related to the community were the following: receiving equipment for free from the government; support from family and the multidisciplinary team, especially the nurses; and having contact with other people with stomata. CONCLUSION: The results allow that nurses develop strategies to help people with stomata to resume their self-care.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Understanding the meanings attributed by family caregivers of children in hospital environments about their interactions with nursing professionals. METHODS: This qualitative study used Symbolic Interactionism as a theoretical reference and Grounded Theory as the methodological framework. It was carried out in a Pediatrics Center in southern Brazil, in the first half of 2013. Participants were 15 family caregivers of hospitalized children. Data were collected through interviews and submitted to open and axial analysis. RESULTS: Interactions with the nursing team enable family to trust or distrust in the provided child care and to positively evaluate the care received. CONCLUSION: Interactions between family members and the nursing team contribute to the significance attributed by the family to the nursing care received by the child. Nurses should be aware of the attitudes of the nursing team regarding the child and their family, prioritizing humanized care.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To identify and analyze the production of knowledge about the strategies that health care institutions have implemented to humanize care of hospitalized children. METHOD: This is a systematic review conducted in the Virtual Health Library - Nursing and SciELO, using the seven steps proposed by the Cochrane Handbook. RESULTS: 15 studies were selected, and strategies that involved relationship exchanges were used between the health professional, the hospitalized child and their families, which may be mediated by leisure activities, music and by reading fairy tales. We also include the use of the architecture itself as a way of providing welfare to the child and his/her family, as well as facilitating the development of the work process of health professionals. CONCLUSION: Investments in research and publications about the topic are necessary, so that, the National Humanization Policy does not disappear and that the identified strategies in this study do not configure as isolated and disjointed actions of health policy.

RESUMO

This study aimed to identify the difficult and easy aspects faced by mothers of visually impaired (VI) children in their care. It is a descriptive qualitative study, developed in the second semester of 2011, with ten mothers of children with visual impairment from an Educational Center for the Visually Impaired located in southern Brazil. Data were collected by means of semistructured interviews and submitted to thematic content analysis. The identified difficulties were the lack of knowledge regarding the disease and how to take care of the child, the lack of access to health services, overload generated by the dependence of the child and lack of support and prejudice within their own family. The easy aspects involved the desire for the child's healthy development the chance of being in touch with qualified professionals for their education, and the contact with other VI children. Therefore, it is important to qualify the family for the care of VI children so as to ensure the development of skills and competencies enabling them to live with quality.

RESUMO

This study aimed to reveal how family experiences the hospitalization of the child in hospital. The study was performed at the pediatrics ward at a university hospital, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The methodological approach was based on Grounded Theory. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, during the first semester of 2010 with 12 companion mothers. They were divided into two sample groups. Comparative analysis of the data generated two categories: negative family experiences during child hospitalization and positive family experiences during child hospitalization. It is known that the experiences of families in the hospital lead us to reflect on our actions when facing them, indicating strategies that professionals can adopt in order to provide a more effective care, they help to experience a healthier hospitalization of the child reflecting on this process.

RESUMO

We aimed to present the educational booklet as a geronto-technological product for caring for ostomized seniors from a complexity perspective. This was accomplished in the second semester of 2007 in a hospital in the south of Brazil. The data were collected through interviews and presented in the form of an educational booklet. The booklet was validated by ostomized seniors and by a nurse who had been working with these elderly patients. The booklet was presented as a geronto-technology able to help ostomized seniors and their families understand the rights of ostomized people; concepts and types of stomas; care of ostomy; and the importance of the family and the support group for care. In conclusion, the educational booklet is presented as a health promotion tool which makes the health educative process easier.

RESUMO

The objective was to investigate the perception by relatives of drug users about the importance of the support group as a strategy of care. We conducted a descriptive study with qualitative approach, in the second half of 2010, in a psychosocial care center for users of alcohol and other drugs (CAPS AD), in a city in the extreme south of Brazil with ten relatives. Data were collected by semistructured interviews and analyzed by thematic analysis. It was found that the group is an alternative to hospitalization in a psychiatric hospital, can provide access and regular monitoring by health professionals, helps understand what addiction is, provides tools for care and allows for the social rehabilitation of the addict. The support group was concluded to be an important strategy for caring for relatives of drug users, presenting itself as a technology to be incorporated by nurses in their daily practice.

RESUMO

This study aimed to establish the impact the first visit to a child hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit have on the moher. This is a qualitative research conducted in a University Hospital from August to November, 2009. Semistructured interviews were conducted with ten mothers. Through thematic analysis we found that: the first visit is striking because the unit is known as a place for the care of critically ill patients; the existing technology causes stress; and that entering at the unit unattended and receiving little information about the child may hinder the mother's presence in the unit and make the visit frightening, leading to mixed feelings. They suggest the need to prepare the mothers to enter the sector through the provision of simple informations that can reduce their anxiety and fear. It is necessary that mothers be supported by the healthcare staff during the visit, strengthening their emotional link with their children.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To know the beliefs, values and practices of families in the care of hospitalized children. METHOD: Qualitative study developed at the Pediatrics Unit of a University Hospital in southern Brazil through non-participant observation, participant observation and interview with children's family members. The methodological framework of Ethnonursing was adopted. Data were coded, classified and scrutinized to identify saturation of similar or different ideas and patterns, and recoded by making theoretical formulations and recommendations. RESULTS: Beliefs, values and practices of families depend on cultural references and are manifested in the care with feeding, clothing and hygiene, maintenance of sleep and rest, presence, care with medication and exercise of religious belief. CONCLUSION: Family members care for the hospitalized child based on their cultural reference and it is important that nurses take this aspect into consideration during care practice. Cultural care aggregates knowledge and can be considered a new paradigm for nursing care that allows an affective, reflective, human, empathic relationship between nurse/child/family.

RESUMO

Fathers have increasingly participated in child care. The objective of this study was to identify the perceptions of the nursing staff as the presence of the father as a caregiver in pediatric units. A qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory study was conducted during the first semester of 2005 in a pediatric unit of a university hospital in Brazil. Four nurses and fifteen orderlies were interviewed using semi-structured interviews, and data were submitted to thematic analysis. The results showed that the team believed that children need both the mother and the father, but the lack of space does not allow the presence of both. The nursing team also believes that mothers take better care of the children than fathers. Fathers are only accepted as caregivers in the hospital under special situations. It was concluded that the nursing team needs to think in how to help fathers to experience and to practice participatory fatherhood in pediatric wards.
