PURPOSE: Postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF), a difficult complication after surgery, can cause peripancreatic fluid collection and infections in the operative area. In addition, pancreatic fluid is corrosive and can lead to postoperative bleeding. Clinically significant grade B and C fistulas (CR-POPF) increase postoperative morbidity, resulting in a prolonged hospital stay. Delaying adjuvant therapy due to fistula formation in cancer patients can affect their prognosis. In this study, we aimed to determine if pasireotide affects fistula formation, and the severity of other complications in patients following pancreatic distal resections. DATA AND METHODS: Between 2000 and 2016, 258 distal pancreatectomies were performed at Helsinki University Hospital and were included in our analysis. Pasireotide was administered to patients undergoing distal resections between July 2014 and December 2016. Patients received 900-µg pasireotide administered twice daily perioperatively. Other patients who received octreotide treatment were analyzed separately. Complications such as fistulas (POPF), delayed gastric emptying (DGE), postpancreatectomy hemorrhage (PPH), reoperations, and mortality were recorded and analyzed 90 days postoperatively. RESULTS: Overall, 47 (18%) patients received pasireotide and 31 (12%) octreotide, while 180 patients (70%) who received neither constituted the control group. There were 40 (16%) clinically relevant grade B and C POPFs: seven (15%) in the pasireotide group, three (10%) in the octreotide group, and 30 (17%) in the control group (p = 0.739). Severe complications categorized as Clavien-Dindo grade III or IV were recorded in 64 (25%) patients: 17 (27%) in the pasireotide group, 4 (6%) in the octreotide group, and 43 (67%) in the control group (p = 0.059). We found no 90-day mortality. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, pasireotide did not reduce clinically relevant POPFs or severe complications following pancreatic distal resection.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the salivary glands has a poor long-term prognosis and high metastatic rate. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) have been related to tumour progression but have also tumour growth-inhibiting responses. To the best of our knowledge, they have not been studied previously in ACC. We studied the immunoexpression of TLR 5 and 7 in ACC of the major salivary glands. From a cohort of 54 patients with ACC of the major salivary glands treated at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Helsinki University Hospital, Helsinki, Finland in 1974-2009, there were 34 primary tumours and six metastases available for immunohistochemical analysis. Immunohistochemical expression of TLR 5 and 7 were correlated to clinicopathological findings and patient survival. Both TLR 5 and 7 were expressed in ACCs and their metastases, mostly on the cell membranes. The expression was heterogeneous in individual tumours. TLR 5 was expressed less in male samples, and TLR 7 had lower expression in ACCs with solid growth pattern. No correlation with survival was found. In the normal salivary gland, the TLR 5 and 7 expression was mainly negative. Both TLR 5 and 7 are expressed in salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma on the cell membranes as well as in cytoplasm.

Biomarkers currently play an important role in the detection and management of patients with several different types of gastrointestinal cancer, especially colorectal, gastric, gastro-oesophageal junction (GOJ) adenocarcinomas and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). The aim of this article is to provide updated and evidence-based guidelines for the use of biomarkers in the different gastrointestinal malignancies. Recommended biomarkers for colorectal cancer include an immunochemical-based fecal occult blood test in screening asymptomatic subjects ≥50 years of age for neoplasia, serial CEA levels in postoperative surveillance of stage II and III patients who may be candidates for surgical resection or systemic therapy in the event of distant metastasis occurring, K-RAS mutation status for identifying patients with advanced disease likely to benefit from anti-EGFR therapeutic antibodies and microsatellite instability testing as a first-line screen for subjects with Lynch syndrome. In advanced gastric or GOJ cancers, measurement of HER2 is recommended in selecting patients for treatment with trastuzumab. For patients with suspected GIST, determination of KIT protein should be used as a diagnostic aid, while KIT mutational analysis may be used for treatment planning in patients with diagnosed GISTs.

BACKGROUND: No reliable prognostic markers exist for squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue, and its prognosis can even in early stages be unpredictable and survival poor despite treatment. A potential marker is oncoprotein cancerous inhibitor of PP2A (CIP2A), which acts as a prognostic marker in gastric and non-small cell lung cancers. METHODS: We collected specimens of 73 stage T1N0M0 and T2N0M0 oral squamous cell carcinomas of the tongue, as well as samples from normal oral mucosa, dysplastic lesions, and invasive carcinomas (n=39). All samples were stained for CIP2A by immunohistochemistry. Survival curves were constructed according to the Kaplan-Meier method. The Cox proportional hazard model served for univariate and multivariate survival analysis. RESULTS: High CIP2A immunoreactivity predicted poor survival in tongue cancer patients (P=0.027, logrank test). In multivariate survival analysis, CIP2A was an independent prognostic factor (HR 2.02, 95% confidence interval 1.07-3.82, P=0.030). Cytoplasmic CIP2A expression was higher in severe dysplasia than in mild dysplasia. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that high CIP2A expression characterises aggressive disease. Acting as a prognostic marker it might be of help when choosing patients for adjuvant treatment in tongue cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Cancerous inhibitor of protein phosphatase 2A (CIP2A) is an oncoprotein expressed in several solid cancers. Our purpose was to study its role in serous ovarian cancer patients, and the association to clinicopathological variables and molecular markers. METHODS: We collected retrospectively 562 consecutive serous ovarian cancer patients treated at the Helsinki University Central Hospital. We stained tumour tissue microarrays for CIP2A by immunohistochemistry and constructed survival curves according to the Kaplan-Meier method. Associations to clinicopathological and molecular markers were assessed by the χ(2)-test. RESULTS: We found strong cytoplasmic CIP2A immunoreactivity in 212 (40.4%) specimens, weak positivity in 222 (42.4%) specimens, and negative in 90 (17.2%). Immunopositive CIP2A expression was associated with high grade (P<0.0001), advanced stage (P=0.0005), and aneuploidy (P=0.001, χ(2)-test). Cancerous inhibitor of protein phosphatase 2A overexpression was also associated with EGFR protein expression (P=0.006) and EGFR amplification (P=0.043). Strong cytoplasmic CIP2A immunopositivity predicted poor outcome in ovarian cancer patients (P<0.0001, log-rank test). CONCLUSION: Our results show that CIP2A associates with reduced survival and parameters associated with high grade in ovarian cancer patients, and may thus be one of the factors that identify aggressive subtype (type II) of this disease.

BACKGROUND: PROX1 is a specific target of the ß-catenin/TCF pathway in the intestinal epithelium. It acts as a regulator of progression from a benign to a highly dysplastic phenotype in colorectal tumours. However, the clinical significance of PROX1 expression is not known. METHODS: We studied the prognostic value of immunohistochemical expression of PROX1 in a series of 517 patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). RESULTS: The majority of the tumour samples expressed PROX1 (91%, 471 out of 517). High PROX1 expression was associated with a poor grade of tumour differentiation (P<0.0001). In the subgroup of patients with colon cancer, high PROX1 expression was associated with unfavourable colorectal cancer-specific survival (CCSS) as compared with low PROX1 expression (CCSS 47% vs 62%; P=0.045; RR 1.47). The association between high PROX1 and poor outcome was further strengthened in female colon cancer patients (CCSS 38% vs 63%; P=0.007; RR 2.02). Nonetheless, in multivariate survival analysis PROX1 expression was not retained as an independent prognostic factor. CONCLUSION: High PROX1 expression is associated with a poor grade of tumour differentiation, and, in colon cancer patients, also with less favourable patient outcome. Our results strengthen the previous preclinical observations that PROX1 has a role in tumour progression in CRC.

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the consequences of chronic pouchitis after restorative proctocolectomy for ulcerative colitis. METHOD: Forty-two patients with chronic pouchitis underwent pouch endoscopy with biopsies after a median of 8.3 years of postoperative follow up. The pouchitis disease activity index (PDAI) was calculated. Morphological changes were recorded. Immunohistochemical analyses for cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2), Ki-67 and p53 were performed, as was DNA flow cytometry. Endoscopy was also carried out in 10 patients without pouchitis and in nine healthy subjects. RESULTS: In patients with chronic pouchitis, the PDAI was 6 (standard error of the mean ± 4). Eighteen (43%) patients used continuous medication. The PDAI correlated positively with villous atrophy (P < 0.05). None of the pouch biopsies showed dysplasia. COX-2 immunostaining was detected in 35 (83.3%) patients with chronic pouchitis, in five (50%) without pouchitis, but in none of the normal controls. COX-2 expression correlated with mucosal atrophy (P < 0.01). In 15 (35.7%) of 42 patients with chronic pouchitis, Ki-67 immunostaining was increased, but no increase was observed in either control group (P < 0.002). No p53 immunopositivity was found, and DNA flow cytometry was normal in all pouches. One of the patients developed adenocarcinoma at the anal anastomosis. CONCLUSION: No dysplastic changes were detected during the first decade after surgery. Routine follow up of patients with chronic pouchitis with a hand-sewn anastomosis may not be necessary, although a small risk of cancer seems to remain at the anal anastomosis. The follow up should be focused on at-risk groups.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is associated with a hypercoagulable state and high mortality. Increases in the plasma levels of tumor marker carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19-9 are used in diagnosis and follow-up but have also been reported to precede venous thromboembolism (VTE). AIMS: We examined the association between CA 19-9 and thrombin generation (TG) in plasma from PDAC patients, as well as their association with coagulation biomarkers prior to pancreatic surgery. In addition, we determined the effect of commercial sources of CA 19-9 on TG. METHODS: We collected plasma from 58 treatment-naïve PDAC patients without any signs of VTE. We measured levels of CA 19-9, FVIII, fibrinogen, D-dimer, antithrombin and extracellular vesicle (EV) tissue factor (TF) activity and TG using a Calibrated Automated Thrombogram (CAT). The effect of different commercial sources of CA 19-9 on TG in Standard Human Plasma (SHP) was also studied. RESULTS: Patient plasma samples were divided into 4 preoperative groups based on the level of CA 19-9: none < 2, low = 3-200, high = 201-1000, and very high > 1000 U/mL. CA 19-9 levels were associated with several of the TG parameters, including endogenous thrombin potential, peak, and time to peak. CA 19-9 did not associate with any of the coagulation biomarkers. Spiking of SHP with CA 19-9 increased TG but this was decreased by an anti-TF antibody. CONCLUSIONS: CA 19-9 was associated with TG in patients prior to any pancreatic cancer treatments or signs of VTE. Some commercial sources of CA 19-9 enhanced TG in SHP seemingly due to contaminating TF.

BACKGROUND: The prognosis of squamous cell carcinoma of the oral tongue is poor and it would be beneficial to find prognostic markers to better adjust treatment. Bmi-1 controls cell cycle and self-renewal of tissue stem cells, transcription factor c-myc affects cell proliferation and apoptosis, and Snail regulates epithelial-mesenchymal transition. The expression of these markers has been connected to prognosis in many cancer types. METHODS: Bmi-1, c-myc, and Snail expressions were studied in our material consisting of 73 primarily T1N0M0 oral tongue carcinoma patients. We compared the immunoexpressions of Bmi-1, c-myc, and Snail with clinical parameters including the degree of histological differentiation, tumour size, TNM classification, depth of invasion, and resection margins. In addition, survival analyses were performed, comparing disease-free survival time with the registered protein expression of the markers mentioned above. RESULTS: A significant correlation between Bmi-1 protein expression and recurrence (log-rank test, P=0.005) was detected. Snail and c-myc expression did not correlate with prognosis. Snail expression correlated with histopathological grade (Fisher's exact test, P=0.007) and with the invasion depth of tumours (chi(2)-test, P=0.037). CONCLUSION: Negative Bmi-1 immunoexpression might serve as a marker of poor prognosis in oral tongue carcinoma patients.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is one of the most difficult malignancies to diagnose and treat. The aim of this article is to review how tumor markers can aid the diagnosis and management of patients with this malignancy. The most widely used and best validated marker for pancreatic cancer is CA 19-9. Inadequate sensitivity and specificity limit the use of CA 19-9 in the early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. In non-jaundiced patients, however, CA 19-9 may complement other diagnostic procedures. In patients with resectable pancreatic cancer, presurgical and postresection CA 19-9 levels correlate with overall survival. In advanced disease, elevated pretreatment levels of CA 19-9 are associated with adverse patient outcome and thus may be combined with other factors for risk stratification. Most, but not all, reports indicate that serial levels of CA 19-9 correlate with response to systemic therapy. Use of CA 19-9 kinetics in conjunction with imaging is therefore recommended in monitoring therapy. Although several potential serum and tissue markers for pancreatic cancer are currently undergoing evaluation, none are sufficiently validated for routine clinical use. CA 19-9 thus remains the serum pancreatic cancer marker against which new markers for this malignancy should be judged.

Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is one of the most lethal malignancies; poorly differentiated thyroid carcinoma (PDTC) is a new diagnosis for rare aggressive thyroid tumours. Surgery is often considered the only chance for survival, but the benefit of surgery and subsequent multimodal therapy is unclear. We retrospectively analyzed the outcome of 44 ATC and 8 PDTC consecutive patients treated at Helsinki University Central Hospital between 1990 and 2008. All ATC and PDTC cases were re-examined and reclassified histologically. Median survival was only 3.1 months for ATC, but 3.7 years for PDTC. Most patients in both groups eventually died of cancer. ATC patients were older than PDTC patients (74 vs. 66 years). Nodal and distant metastases had a negative impact on survival (ATC; p = 0.038, p = 0.008). Long-term survivors in both groups were stage N0M0 at presentation. Multimodal therapy was successful for 9 (20%) ATC patients, and their median survival was the longest (11.6 months) among treatment groups. Most PDTC patients (88%) underwent total thyroidectomy followed by radioiodine ablation; the only 2 who received chemotherapy survived longest. Although ATC and PDTC are both aggressive thyroid carcinomas, multimodal therapy for both can provide a chance of prolonged survival in patients with locoregional disease.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the expression of the androgen receptor(AR) and syndecan-1 in breast tissue during long-term hormonal treatment in cynomolgus monkeys. METHODS: Sixty oophorectomized macaques were randomized to receive either tibolone, conjugated equine estrogens (CEE), CEE + medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) or no hormonal treatment. Breast tissue was collected at necropsy after 2 years and stained for AR and syndecan-1. RESULTS: Apparent differences were seen between treatment groups as compared to untreated animals. AR expression was markedly increased by tibolone and suppressed by combined CEE/MPA. Both treatments increased syndecan-1 in stromal tissue, whereas CEE alone had no significant effect. CONCLUSIONS: We found alternative regimens for hormonal therapy to differ in their influence on two markers of importance for the development of breast cancer. The results may be relevant for the ongoing clinical discussion on the long-term safety of different hormonal treatments.

The aim of this article is to present updated guidelines for the use of serum, tissue and faecal markers in colorectal cancer (CRC). Lack of specificity and sensitivity preclude the use of all existing serum markers for the early detection of CRC. For patients with stage II or stage III CRC who may be candidates for either liver resection or systemic treatment should recurrence develop, CEA should be measured every 2-3 months for at least 3 years after diagnosis. Insufficient evidence exists to recommend routine use of tissue factors such as thymidylate synthase, microsatellite instability (MSI), p53, K-ras and deleted in colon cancer (DCC) for either determining prognosis or predicting response to therapy in patients with CRC. Microsatellite instability, however, may be used as a pre-screen for patients with suspected hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer. Faecal occult blood testing but not faecal DNA markers may be used to screen asymptomatic subjects 50 years or older for early CRC.

OBJECTIVE: The extracellular matrix glycoprotein tenascin-C has been proposed as a tumor marker with prognostic significance in many cancer forms, but in colorectal cancer, reported results have been controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of immunohistochemical tenascin-C expression in a series of 231 patients with colorectal cancer. METHODS: Paraffin-embedded formalin-fixed specimens were stained with a tenascin-C-specific monoclonal antibody, and the stromal staining intensity and pattern were analyzed. RESULTS: Tenascin-C immunoreactivity was observed in all 231 specimens, with a pattern of staining that was diffuse and interstitial. The staining was occasional in 39 (17%), moderate in 106 (46%) and strong in 86 specimens (37%). There was no statistically significant association between tenascin-C immunoreactivity and any of the other clinicopathological variables. The cumulative 5-year survival rates of patients with occasional and weak staining were similar (56.8 and 54.9%, respectively), while the patients with strong tenascin-C staining had a lower survival rate (46.1%). This difference in survival was not significant (p = 0.23). CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that immunohistochemical expression of tenascin-C is not of prognostic significance in colorectal cancer.

Several in vitro methods have been suggested to predict drug-induced haematotoxicity and species differences; the most commonly used being the clonogenic CFU-GM assay. The aim of the current study was to evaluate whether primary lymphocytes from peripheral blood, assayed with a short-term non-clonogenic assay, could be used to detect species differences in drug sensitivity, and offer an alternative to the CFU-GM assay. The effect of 17 different cytotoxic drugs on lymphocytes from human, dog, rat and mouse was evaluated. A higher sensitivity of human than mouse lymphocytes was seen for topotecan and for 3 of 5 antimetabolites tested. Clear species specificity was also seen for the proteasome inhibitor bortezomib where rodent cells were 50-300 times less sensitive than human cells. Good agreement between our data and published CFU-GM data was observed, suggesting that primary lymphocytes may be a useful model for species difference screening in drug development.

OBJECTIVES: Since the early 1990s, low long-term survival rates following pancreatic surgery for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma have challenged us to improve treatment. In this series, we aim to show improved survival from pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma during the era of centralized pancreatic surgery. METHODS: Analysis of all pancreatic resections performed at Helsinki University Hospital and survival of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma patients during 2000-2013 were included. Post-operative complications such as fistulas, reoperations, and mortality rates were recorded. Patient and tumor characteristics were compared with survival data. RESULTS: Of the 853 patients undergoing pancreatic surgery, 581 (68%) were pancreaticoduodenectomies, 195 (21%) distal resections, 28 (3%) total pancreatectomies, and 49 (6%) other procedures. Mortality after pancreaticoduodenectomy was 2.1%. The clinically relevant B/C fistula rate was 7% after pancreaticoduodenectomy and 13% after distal resection, and the re-operation rate was 5%. The 5- and 10-year survival rates for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma were 22% and 14%; for T1-2, N0 and R0 tumors, the corresponding survival rates were 49% and 31%. Carbohydrate antigen 19-9 >75 kU/L, carcinoembryonic antigen >5 µg/L, N1, lymph-node ratio >20%, R1, and lack of adjuvant therapy were independent risk factors for decreased survival. CONCLUSION: After centralization of pancreatic surgery in southern Finland, we have managed to enable pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma patients to survive markedly longer than in the early 1990s. Based on a 1.7-million population in our clinic, mortality rates are equal to those of other high-volume centers and long-term survival rates for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma have now risen to some of the highest reported.

Tumor-associated trypsin inhibitor (TATI) is a marker of mucinous ovarian carcinoma, but it is also widely expressed in other malignant tumors and normal human tissues. Elevated serum concentrations of TATI are of prognostic value in ovarian, kidney, and bladder cancer. Tumor-associated trypsin is co-expressed with TATI in many malignancies and is thought to be involved in tumor invasion. TATI mRNA has been shown to be overexpressed in bladder cancer. We therefore studied whether trypsinogen expression also can be detected in bladder cancer and how this and TATI expression are associated with the clinicopathological characteristics of the tumors. We used RT-PCR, in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry to detect trypsinogen- and TATI mRNA and protein in tissue samples from 28 bladder cancer patients and ten benign urothelia. TATI expression was detected in all benign tissues and non-invasive tumors. However, the expression was lower in the muscle-invasive tumors (pT2; n=5), whereas trypsinogen expression was seen in all but one non-invasive tumor. We conclude that trypsinogen is expressed in both malignant and benign bladder epithelium, whereas TATI expression decreases with increasing stage and grade of the tumor. This may suggest that a balanced expression of TATI and trypsinogen is required in normal tissue and that this balance is disrupted during tumor progression.

BACKGROUND: Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) overexpression is related to poor outcome in several cancers. COX-2 is upregulated in 42-90% of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas and is a potential target for chemotherapy. Earlier studies have not shown the expression of COX-2 to be a prognostic factor in pancreatic cancer. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prognostic value of COX-2 in a series of patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma. METHODS: 128 patients operated on for pancreatic adenocarcinoma at Helsinki University Central Hospital between 1974 and 1998 provided sections from primary tumours which were immunohistochemically stained with a COX-2-antihuman monoclonal antibody. RESULTS: Cytoplasmic COX-2 reactivity (>5%) occurred in 46 specimens (36%), correlating neither with age, sex, stage, size, tumour stage, nodal metastases, nor grade. Lack of COX-2 expression correlated with distant metastases (p = 0.026). In univariate survival analysis, COX-2 expression (p = 0.0114), stage (p = 0.0002), grade (p = 0.0001), and age (p = 0.042) had prognostic significance. One, two, and five year survival rates were 51%, 32%, and 8% in the COX-2 negative groups compared with 34%, 5%, and 5% in the COX-2 positive groups (p = 0.011). Prognostic significance was especially high for patients operated on with curative intent (p = 0.004). In multivariate analysis, COX-2 was an independent prognostic factor (hazard ratio = 1.6 (95% confidence interval, 1.1 to 2.3)). CONCLUSIONS: Expression of COX-2 was associated with poor outcome from pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma and was independent of tumour stage, grade, or age in multivariate analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) MMP-2 and MMP-9 can degrade type IV collagen of extracellular matrix and basal membranes. As cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2) has been shown to activate MMPs, creating one of the COX-2-promoted pathways of tumour growth and metastasis, the prognostic role of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in gastric cancer was assessed and their association with COX-2 expression was evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Samples were collected from 342 consecutive patients operated on for gastric cancer, of which 315 were acceptable for MMP-2, MMP-9 and COX-2 immunohistochemistry. Specimens were stained with specific antibodies, evaluated and categorised by two interpreters, and then correlated with clinical data and survival. RESULTS: Epithelial MMP-2 immunoreactivity was associated with male sex, high stage, advanced penetration depth, non-curative surgery, high COX-2 expression and poor survival. Stromal MMP-2 expression correlated with high stage, intestinal type and non-curative surgery whereas MMP-9 correlated only with intestinal type. Stage, intent of surgery and COX-2 were independent prognostic factors. CONCLUSIONS: Epithelial MMP-2 expression in gastric cancer is associated with aggressive forms, COX-2 and poor survival, although MMP-2 was not an independent prognostic factor. In gastric cancer tumour growth is apparently induced by COX-2, and invasion is mediated by MMP-2.

BACKGROUND: Xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR) is a key enzyme in the degradation of DNA, RNA and high-energy phosphates. About half of the patients with breast cancer have a decrease in XOR expression. Patients with breast cancer with unfavourable prognosis are independently identified by the loss of XOR. AIM: To assess the clinical relevance of XOR expression in gastric cancer. METHODS: XOR levels were studied by immunohistochemistry in tissue microarray specimens of 337 patients with gastric cancer and the relation between XOR expression and a series of clinicopathological variables, as well as disease-specific survival, was assessed. RESULTS: XOR was moderately decreased in 41% and was undetectable in another 14% of the tumours compared with the corresponding normal tissue. Decreased XOR was associated with advanced stage, deep tumour penetration, diffusely spread tumour location, positive lymph node status, large tumour size, non-curative disease, cellular aneuploidy, high S-phase fraction and high cyclooxygenase-2 expression, but not with p53 expression or Borrmann classification. Down regulation of XOR was associated with unfavourable outcome, and the cumulative 5-year gastric cancer-specific survival in patients with strong XOR expression was 47%, compared with 22% in those with moderate to negative expression (p<0.001). This was also true in patients with stage I-II (p = 0.01) and lymph node-negative (p = 0.02) disease, as well as in patients with smaller (< or =5 cm) tumours (p = 0.02). CONCLUSION: XOR expression in gastric cancer may be a new marker for a more aggressive gastric cancer biology, similar to that previously reported for breast cancer.
