BACKGROUND: IPF is a complex lung disease whose aetiology is not fully understood, but diet may have an impact on its development and progression. Therefore, we investigated the potential causal connection between dietary intake and IPF through TSMR to offer insights for early disease prevention recommendations. METHODS: The study incorporated 29 dietary exposure factors, oily fish intake, bacon intake, processed meat intake, poultry intake, beef intake, pork intake, lamb/mutton intake, non-oily fish intake, fresh fruit intake, cooked vegetable intake, baked bean intake, fresh tomato intake, tinned tomato intake, salad/raw vegetable intake, Fresh fruit intake, coffee intake, tea intake, water intake, red wine intake, average weekly beer plus cider intake, alcoholic drinks per week, cereal intake, bread intake, whole-wheat intake, whole-wheat cereal intake, cheese intake, yogurt intake, salt added to food and whole egg intake. The study explored the causal link between diet and IPF using TSMR analysis, predominantly the IVW method, and performed sensitivity analyses to validate the results. RESULT: The study revealed that consuming oily fish, yogurt, and dried fruits had a protective effect against IPF, whereas the consumption of alcoholic beverages and beef was linked to an increased risk of IPF. CONCLUSION: In this MR study, it was discovered that the consumption of oily fish, yogurt, and dried fruits exhibited a protective effect against IPF, whereas the intake of alcoholic beverages and beef was associated with an elevated risk of IPF. These findings underscore the significance of making informed and timely dietary decisions in IPF prevention.

The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae), is a highly polyphagous invasive pest that damages various crops. Pesticide control is the most common and effective strategy to control FAW. In this study, we evaluated the toxicity of metaflumizone and indoxacarb against third-instar FAW larvae using the insecticide-incorporated artificial diet method under laboratory conditions. Both metaflumizone and indoxacarb exhibited substantial toxicity against FAW, with LC50 values of 2.43 and 14.66 mg/L at 72 h, respectively. The sublethal effects of metaflumizone and indoxacarb on parental and F1 generation FAW were investigated by exposing third-instar larvae to LC10 and LC30 concentrations of these insecticides. Sublethal exposure to these two insecticides significantly shortened adult longevity, extended pupal developmental times and led to reduced pupal weight, pupation rates, and adult fecundity in the treated parental generation and F1 generation at LC10 or LC30 concentrations, in comparison to the control group. The larval developmental times were shortened in the parental generation but prolonged in the F1 generation, after being treated with sublethal concentrations of metaflumizone. Furthermore, larvae exposed to LC10 or LC30 concentrations of indoxacarb exhibited elevated activity levels of cytochrome P450 monooxygenase and glutathione S-transferase, which coincides with the observed synergistic effect of piperonyl butoxide and diethyl maleate. In conclusion, the high toxicity and negative impact of metaflumizone and indoxacarb on FAW provided significant implications for the rational utilization of insecticides against this pest.

This study aimed to clarify the effects of drought during flowering period on the carbon and nitrogen metabolism, growth, and yield of Tartary buckwheat. Tartary buckwheat cultivar Jinqiao 2 was treated with well-watered (CK), slight soil-drought stress (LD), moderate soil-drought stress (MD), and severe soil-drought stress (SD), with the soil water potential maintained at - 0.02 to - 0.03, - 0.04 to - 0.05, - 0.05 to - 0.06, and - 0.06 to - 0.07 MPa, respectively. With prolonged growth period and an increase in drought stress, the antioxidant enzyme activities and the contents of substances and activities of enzymes related to carbon and nitrogen metabolism in Tartary buckwheat leaves initially increased and then decreased. Meanwhile, the contents of malondialdehyde and superoxide anion showed a continuous. LD treatment induced the highest antioxidant enzyme activities and the contents of substances and activities of enzymes related to carbon and nitrogen metabolism but the lowest contents of malondialdehyde and superoxide anion in Tartary buckwheat leaves. Compared with CK, LD treatment increased the grain number, 1000-grain weight (MTS), and yield per plant by 6.52%, 17.37%, and 12.35%, respectively. In summary, LD treatment can increase the antioxidant enzyme activities and the contents of substances and activities of enzymes related to carbon and nitrogen metabolism, thus enhancing the adaptability of Tartary buckwheat to drought stress and increasing the yield per plant.

The effects of ultrasound pretreatment (20 kHz, 30 W/L) on mulberries' texture, microstructure, characteristics of cell-wall polysaccharides, moisture migration, and drying quality were investigated over exposure times ranging from 15 to 45 min. Ultrasound induced softening of mulberry tissue, accompanied by an increase in water-soluble pectin and a decrease in chelate-soluble pectin and Na2CO3-soluble pectin concentrations. Noticeable depolymerization of the pectin nanostructure was observed in the pretreated mulberries, along with a decrease in molecular weight, attributed to side-chain structure cleavage. Ultrasound loosened the cell wall structure, increased free water content and freedom, thereby reducing water diffusion resistance. Ultrasound pretreatment reduced drying time by 11.2 % to 23.3 % at various processing times compared to controls. Due to significantly enhanced drying efficiency, the optimal pretreatment time (30 min) yielded dried mulberries with higher levels of total phenolics and total anthocyanins, along with an increased antioxidant capacity. The results of this study provide insights into the mechanisms by which ultrasound pretreatment can effectively enhance the mulberry drying process.

The key mutations, such as the Gly-4891-Glu substitution and the Ile-4734 multiple substitutions within the ryanodine receptors (RyR), are linked to diamide resistance in fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda. In this study, we found that FAW remained sensitive to cyantraniliprole and chlorantraniliprole, while its sensitivity to flubendiamide was reduced. Moreover, a low level of heterozygous mutation at I4743 was observed. To facilitate the detection procedure of these mutations, a simple and efficient loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) protocol was developed for operation. The reaction for detecting the G4891E and I4743 single or multiple mutations was carried out at 68 °C for 85 min and 68 °C for 85 min or 68 °C for 65 min, respectively. These LAMP reactions can be easily observed via visualization of the color change from pink to yellow. This assay provides a simple, convenient, and effective means of detecting mutations in the RyR of FAW for pest management purposes.

BACKGROUND: Multiple studies have highlighted a potential link between gut microbes and the onset of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH). Nonetheless, the precise cause-and-effect relationship remains uncertain. OBJECTIVES: In this investigation, we utilized a two-sample Mendelian randomization (TSMR) approach to probe the presence of a causal connection between gut microbiota and PAH. METHODS: Genome-wide association (GWAS) data for gut microbiota and PAH were sourced from MiBioGen and FinnGen research, respectively. Inverse variance weighting (IVW) was used as the primary method to explore the causal effect between gut flora and PAH, supplemented by MR-Egger, weighted median (WM). Sensitivity analyses examined the robustness of the MR results. Reverse MR analysis was used to rule out the effect of reverse causality on the results. RESULTS: The results indicate that Genus Ruminococcaceae UCG004 (OR = 0.407, P = 0.031) and Family Alcaligenaceae (OR = 0.244, P = 0.014) were protective factors for PAH. Meanwhile Genus Lactobacillus (OR = 2.446, P = 0.013), Class Melainabacteria (OR = 2.061, P = 0.034), Phylum Actinobacteria (OR = 3.406, P = 0.010), Genus Victivallis (OR = 1.980, P = 0.010), Genus Dorea (OR = 3.834, P = 0.024) and Genus Slackia (OR = 2.622, P = 0.039) were associated with an increased Prevalence of PAH. Heterogeneity and pleiotropy were not detected by sensitivity analyses, while there was no reverse causality for these nine specific gut microorganisms. CONCLUSIONS: This study explores the causal effects of eight gut microbial taxa on PAH and provides new ideas for early prevention of PAH.

Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), the most prevalent chronic respiratory condition, significantly impairs patients' quality of life. The pivotal element in disease management lies in prevention, underscoring the paramount importance of employing a scientific approach to investigate early prevention strategies for COPD. Methods: This study delved into the causal link between 28 dietary intakes and COPD employing two-sample Mendelian randomization. We primarily utilized the Inverse Variance Weighted (IVW) method as the main outcome, complemented by Weighted Median (WM), MR-Egger method, along with several sensitivity analysis techniques, all accompanied by visual representations. Results: We identified higher odds of COPD following exposure to green beans (OR=1.381, 95% CI=1.119-1.704, P=0.003) and pork intake (OR=2.657, 95% CI=1.203-5.868, P=0.016). In contrast, the odds of developing COPD were lower following exposure to dried fruit (OR=0.481, 95% CI=0.283-0.819, P=0.007), cereal (OR=0.560, 95% CI=0.356-0.880, P=0.012), and whole egg consumption (OR=0.700, 95% CI=0.504-0.972, P=0.033). Conclusion: In light of our study's findings, we anticipate that strategically modifying dietary choices may offer an avenue for early COPD prevention in the future.

This study aims to clarify the effects of different concentrations of sodium chloride on the carbon and nitrogen metabolism and yield of Tartary buckwheat. The salt-sensitive cultivar Yunqiao 2 was pot-grown and treated with four salt concentrations including 0, 2, 4, and 6 g kg-1. The root morphology index increased from seedling stage to maturate stage. The content of soluble protein in the leaves reached the maximum at the anthesis stage, and the other substances content and the enzymes activity related to carbon and nitrogen metabolism reached the maximum at the grain filling stage. The root morphology index, root activity; invertase, amylase, sucrose synthase, and sucrose phosphate synthase activities; nitrate-nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen, and soluble protein content; and nitrate reductase and glutamate synthase activities increased first and reached the maximum at 2 g kg-1 treatment and then decreased with increasing salt stress concentration. The content of soluble sugars and sucrose and the activity of glutamate dehydrogenase increased continuously with increasing salt concentration, and reached the maximum in the 6 g kg-1 treatment. The grain number per plant, 100-grain weight, and yield per plant increased first and reached the maximum at 2 g kg-1 treatment and then decreased with increasing salt stress concentration. In summary, moderate salt stress (2 g kg-1) can promote the root growth, increase the content of carbon and nitrogen metabolism-related substances and enzyme activity, and increase the yield per plant of Tartary buckwheat.

Planting densities and nitrogen fertilizer application rates determine the yield of crops. Tartary buckwheat is a pseudocereal crop with great health care and development values. However, little is known about application of nitrogen fertilizer and planting density on the physiological characteristics of Tartary buckwheat. This study aims to clarify the effect of planting density on the senescence and yield of Tartary buckwheat under low nitrogen conditions. A 2-year field experiment was conducted on Tartary buckwheat (Jinqiao 2) to study the effects of different planting densities (8 × 105, 10 × 105, 12 × 105, 14 × 105, and 16 × 105 plants·ha-1) on the root morphology and activity, chlorophyll and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents, antioxidant enzyme activity, photosynthetic characteristics, agronomic traits, and yield of Tartary buckwheat in the absence of nitrogen fertilizer treatment. With the increase in planting density, the root morphological indices and activities; chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and carotenoid contents; superoxide dismutase and peroxidase activities; net photosynthetic rate; transpiration rate; intercellular CO2 concentration and transpiration rate; main stem node, branch, and leaf numbers; grain number and weight per plant; and 1000-grain weight of Jinqiao 2 decreased continuously, whereas plant height and leaf MDA content increased continuously. The yield of Tartary buckwheat first increased and then decreased with the increase in planting density. The yield under 14 × 105 plants·ha-1 treatment increased by 68.61%, 44.82%, 11.00%, and 22.36%, respectively, relative to that under 8 × 105, 10 × 105, 12 × 105, and 16 × 105 plants·ha-1treatments. In summary, planting at an appropriately high density (14 × 105 plants·ha-1) can promote the increase in the yield of Tartary buckwheat populations under low nitrogen conditions and is recommended for use in production to achieve the high-yielding and nitrogen saving cultivation of Tartary buckwheat. This research can serve as a theoretical basis to jointly achieve the high yield and nitrogen saving of Tartary buckwheat.
RESUMO
The relationship between quality attributes and microstructure in strawberry pulp after pasteurization (PS), ultrasound (US), electron beam irradiation (EB), and high pressure (HP) treatments was investigated. The results showed that US treatment decreased the viscosity to the lowest by 80.15% and increased the a* value, cloudy stability, and contents of titratable acid, total soluble solid, organic acids, total phenols, total flavonoids, and total anthocyanins (TAC), as well as its antioxidant capacity, due to the decrease in particle size, the destruction of microstructure, and the release of intracellular compounds. US and EB treatments could maintain the volatile compounds. The greatest deterioration in TAC and volatile compound content was found in the pulp treated with PS and HP treatments. HP treatment was beneficial to the enhancement of apparent viscosity, organic acids, and soluble sugar. These results provided insights into the enhancement of quality attributes in strawberry pulp due to the microstructure change.
