RESUMO

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of supplemental levels of compound minerals (CM), which was formulated from a mixture of 300 mg calcium, 150 mg magnesium, 25 mg zinc, 15 mg iron, 4 mg manganese, and 2 mg copper per gram, on the growth performance and feed conversion ratio of Duroc × (Landrace × Yorkshire) fattening pigs. A total of 53 female pigs and 45 male pigs at 35 days of age were individually notched and randomly allocated to three treatments, including0 (basal diet), 0.5 (basal diet with 0.5 mg CM/kg feed), and 1 (basal diet with 1 mg CM/kg feed). There were three replicates for each of the three treatments with 28, 34, and 36 pigs in the first, second, and third treatments, respectively. The experiment was divided into two phases, the growing stage, and the finishing stage. Supplementation of compound minerals in the diet led to an increased average daily weight gain and improved feed conversion ratio and meat quality without effects on the lean meat percentage. An addition of 1 mg of compound minerals per 1 kg of feed is the recommended dose to improve the production performance of fattening pigs. These results suggest that the use of compound minerals could improve the growth traits of fattening pigs under tropical environmental conditions.

RESUMO

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in the form of nanospheres from a few nm to 100 nm in diameter were synthesized in a controlled manner using a combination of two reducing agents: sodium borohydride (SBH) and trisodium citrate (TSC). The influence of the size of AgNPs on antibacterial activity was investigated with different concentrations of AgNPs on two types of bacteria:Pseudomonas aeruginosa(PA) andStaphylococcus aureusresistant (SA) while the positive control wasAmpicillin (Amp)50µg/ml and the negative control was water. AgNPs were investigated for morphology, size and size distribution using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements. The optical properties of the AgNPs were investigated by recording their UV-vis absorption spectra. The antimicrobial activity of AgNPs was determined using the disc diffusion method. The results showed that the antibacterial ability of AgNPs depends on both concentration and particle size. With a particle concentration of 50µg ml-1, the antibacterial ability is the best. The smaller the particle size, the higher the antibacterial ability. The simultaneous use of two reducing agents TSC and SBH is the novelty of the article to synthesize AgNPs particles that are uniform in shape and size while controlling the particle size. On that basis, their antibacterial performance is increased.

RESUMO

Cuprous oxide/copper/cupric oxide nanoparticles were synthesized through a hybrid process involving anodic dissolution and a controlled redox reaction between NaOH and glucose in the solution. The study demonstrates the structural manipulation of the material by varying the reaction components within the solution. Morphology, structural analyses using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), EDX (Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy), TEM (Transmission Electron Microscope), FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction), and XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) unveiled the tunability of the material's structure based on the reaction components. Nitrogen adsorption analysis employing the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) equation confirmed the material's porosity, while Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) measurements provided insights into the materials' hydrodynamic size and zeta potential. The results demonstrated that by increasing the glucose/NaOH ratio during the reaction, the different structures and morphologies of the distinct products were obtained from the clustering of small nanoparticles to cubic shape and flower-like structure. Antibacterial activity tests conducted on various bacterial strains showed a correlation between the morphology and structure of the material and its antibacterial properties. The highest substantial antibacterial efficacy against all tested bacterial strains at a dosage of 100 µg/L was obtained for the samples with clustering morphology, whereas the remaining materials showed no discernible antibacterial effect against one of the studied bacteria. The results also demonstrated that the sample with a clustering structure exhibited superior antibacterial properties when dispersed in water containing dimethylsulfoxide.

RESUMO

TiO2 nanoparticles have emerged as a great photocatalyst to degrade organic contaminants in water; however, the nanoparticles dispersed in water could be difficult to be recovered and potentially become contaminant. Herbicide like 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) used in agriculture usually ends up with a large fraction remaining in water and sediment, which may cause potential risk to human health and the ecosystem. This study proposes a greener method to utilize TiO2 as photocatalyst to remove 2,4-D from water. Accordingly, TiO2 nanoparticles (10-45 nm) were synthesized and grafted on lightweight fired clay to generate a TiO2-based floating photocatalyst. Experimental testing revealed that 60.2% of 2,4-D (0.1 mM) can be decomposed in 250 min under UV light with TiO2-grafted lightweight fired clay floating on water. Degradation fits well into the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The floating photocatalysts can degrade approximately 50% 2,4-D in 250 min under sunlight and the degradation efficiency is stable for cycles. The results revealed that the fabrication of floating photocatalyst could be a promising and greener way to remove herbicide contaminants in water using TiO2.

RESUMO

Treatment of highly persistent perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has been a challenging but significant task. Herein, we propose adsorption-mediated chemical decomposition of PFAS implemented by using granular activated carbon (GAC) impregnated with zerovalent nanoiron (ZVI, Fe0 ), so-called reactive activated carbon (RAC). The effects of reaction temperature, injection of persulfate (PS), and presence of soil on removal of PFAS in water were evaluated. Results showed that RAC conjugated with PS at 60°C exhibited decomposition of PFAS, exclusively all three carboxylic PFAS tested, obviously producing various identifiable short-chain PFAS. Carboxylic PFAS were removed via physical adsorption combined with chemical decomposition while sulfonic PFAS were removed via solely adsorption mechanism. The presence of soil particles did not greatly affect the overall removal of PFAS. Carbon mass balance suggested that chemical oxidation by radical mechanisms mutually influences, in a complex manner, PFAS adsorption to GAC, ZVI and its iron derivatives, and soil particles. Nonetheless, all tested six PFAS were removed significantly. If successfully developed, the adsorption-mediated decomposition strategy may work for treatment of complex media containing PFAS and co-contaminants under different environmental settings. PRACTITIONERS POINTS: Treatment of persistent per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) was addressed. Activated carbon with zerovalent iron was examined in the presence of persulfate. The system significantly removed and decomposed PFAS in water and soil mixture.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Localization of an early stage gastric tumor is easily performed in conventional open surgery, whereas it is a difficult procedure in minimally invasive surgery (MIS). A tactile sensor could allow precise resection of the tumor in laparoscopic surgery. The safety of medical tools should be ensured in MIS. Moreover, boundary conditions such as a double-ended beam without a supporting rigid base during tissue palpation were hardly considered. Thus, we suppose that it is informative to assess the normal force and shear force for practical tumor detection considering the boundary condition. METHODS: In this study, a tactile sensor with normal and shear force measurement functions using the acoustic reflection principle was developed for gastric tumor detection in MIS. The developed tactile sensor was tested using an artificial phantom of the stomach without a supporting rigid base to evaluate the force response of the sensor in intraoperative tumor localization. RESULTS: The developed sensor is safe for human tissue and can be sterilized. The experimental results show that the developed tactile sensor has the capability to measure normal and shear forces. In the gastric tumor detection test, the shear force of the sensor was more stable and highly responsive to the tumor position than the normal force, which is greatly affected by the bending of the tissue during the operation. CONCLUSIONS: A two-axis tactile sensor using the acoustic reflection principle was assembled for tissue palpation in MIS. The results showed that the developed sensor is suitable for tumor detection, indicating that the shear force information of the developed sensor is more useful in MIS for early stage gastric tumor localization.

RESUMO

The aim of this paper is to test the hypothesis that healed traumatic injuries in the pre-Neolithic assemblage of Con Co Ngua, northern Vietnam (c. 6800-6200 cal BP) are consistent with large wild animal interactions prior to their domestication. The core sample included 110 adult (aged ≥ 18 years) individuals, while comparisons are made with an additional six skeletal series from Neolithic through to Iron Age Vietnam, Thailand, and Mongolia. All post cranial skeletal elements were assessed for signs of healed trauma and identified cases were further x-rayed. Crude trauma prevalence (14/110, 12.7%) was not significantly different between males (8/52) and females (5/37) (χ2 = 0.061, p = 0.805). Nor were there significant differences in the prevalence of fractured limbs, although males displayed greater rates of lower limb bone trauma than females. Further, distinct from females, half the injured males suffered vertebral fractures, consistent with high-energy trauma. The first hypothesis is supported, while some support for the sexual divisions of labour was found. The prevalence and pattern of fractured limbs at CCN when compared with other Southeast and East Asian sites is most similar to the agropastoral site of Lamadong, China. The potential for skeletal trauma to assess animal trapping and herding practices prior to domestication in the past is discussed.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: In current minimally invasive surgery techniques, the tactile information available to the surgeon is limited. Improving tactile sensation could enhance the operability of surgical instruments. Considering surgical applications, requirements such as having electrical safety, a simple structure, and sterilization capability should be considered. The current study sought to develop a grasper that can measure grasping force at the tip, based on a previously proposed tactile sensing method using acoustic reflection. This method can satisfy the requirements for surgical applications because it has no electrical element within the part that is inserted into the patient's body. METHODS: We integrated our acoustic tactile sensing method into a conventional grasping forceps instrument. We designed the instrument so that acoustic cavities within a grasping arm and a fork sleeve were connected by a small cavity in a pivoting joint. In this design, when the angle between the two grasping arms changes during grasping, the total length and local curvature of the acoustic cavity remain unchanged. Thus, the grasping force can be measured regardless of the orientation of the grasping arm. RESULTS: We developed a prototype sensorized grasper based on our proposed design. Fundamental tests revealed that sensor output increased with increasing contact force applied to the grasping arm, and the angle of the grasping arm did not significantly affect the sensor output. Moreover, the results of a grasping test, in which objects with different softness characteristics were held by the grasper, revealed that the grasping force could be appropriately adjusted to handle different objects on the basis of sensor output. CONCLUSIONS: Experimental results demonstrated that the prototype grasper can measure grasping force, enabling safe and stable grasping.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the extent of under-utilization and insufficiency or inappropriateness in provision of health services as one of the possible causes of high mortality from pediatric pneumonia in pilot areas in Vietnam. METHOD: The household survey on morbidity and treatment of acute respiratory infections, simple cough, and cold and pneumonia, was conducted in two communities with 10% sampling of the child population. RESULTS: Both under-treatment of "fast breathing", a proxy for pneumonia, and over-treatment of simple cough and cold with antimicrobials by health workers, mothers, and private practitioners were common. CONCLUSIONS: A household survey on morbidity and treatment was found to be useful to clarify actual practices in the treatment of acute respiratory infections in the community, which cannot be obtained by mere interview with health workers or mothers. Since a change of knowledge did not automatically lead to change of practice, the training of health workers, health education of mothers and provision of antimicrobials at village health stations would not guarantee improved practice of health workers and mothers. Therefore, constant supervision for health workers, continued health education of mothers and involvement of private practitioners are needed to improve the situation.
