BACKGROUND: Transplant-associated thrombotic microangiopathy (TA-TMA) is an endothelial injury complication of hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) leading to end-organ damage and high morbidity and mortality. Defibrotide is an anti-inflammatory and antithrombotic agent that may protect the endothelium during conditioning. PROCEDURE: We hypothesized that prophylactic use of defibrotide during HSCT conditioning and acute recovery could prevent TA-TMA. A pilot single-arm phase II trial (NCT#03384693) evaluated the safety and feasibility of administering prophylactic defibrotide to high-risk pediatric patients during HSCT and assessed if prophylactic defibrotide prevented TA-TMA compared to historic controls. Patients received defibrotide 6.25 mg/kg IV q6h the day prior to the start of conditioning through day +21. Patients were prospectively monitored for TA-TMA from admission through week 24 post transplant. Potential biomarkers of endothelial injury (suppression of tumorigenicity 2 [ST2], angiopoietin-2 [ANG-2], plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 [PAI-1], and free hemoglobin) were analyzed. RESULTS: Twenty-five patients were enrolled, 14 undergoing tandem autologous HSCT for neuroblastoma and 11 undergoing allogeneic HSCT. Defibrotide was discontinued early due to possibly related clinically significant bleeding in 12% (3/25) of patients; no other severe adverse events occurred due to the study intervention. The other 22 patients missed a median of 0.7% of doses (0%-5.2%). One patient developed nonsevere TA-TMA 12 days post HSCT. This observed TA-TMA incidence of 4% was below the historic rate of 18%-40% in a similar population of allogeneic and autologous patients. CONCLUSIONS: Our study provides evidence that defibrotide prophylaxis is feasible in pediatric patients undergoing HSCT at high risk for TA-TMA and preliminary data indicating that defibrotide may reduce the risk of TA-TMA.

BACKGROUND: The treatment paradigm for patients with relapsed/refractory B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (rrALL) has been revolutionized given recent clinical trials demonstrating remarkable success of immunotherapies and leading to drug approvals by United States and European agencies. We report experience with commercial blinatumomab and inotuzumab use at two North American pediatric oncology centers in children and adolescents/young adults with B-ALL. PROCEDURE: Patients 0-25 years old treated with the CD19 × CD3 bispecific T cell-engaging antibody blinatumomab and/or the CD22 antibody-drug conjugate inotuzumab from January 1, 2010, to June 1, 2018, were eligible. Disease status included relapsed B-ALL in second or greater relapse, primary chemotherapy-refractory B-ALL, or B-ALL complicated by severe infection precluding delivery of conventional chemotherapy. RESULTS: We identified 27 patients who received blinatumomab and/or inotuzumab outside of clinical trials during the study period. Four of the 13 patients (31%) with relapsed disease achieved minimal residual disease (MRD)-negative remission, and five patients (39%) underwent hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT). In the 12 patients with primary chemorefractory B-ALL treated with immunotherapy, 11 (92%) achieved MRD-negative remission as assessed by flow cytometry; 10 patients (83%) underwent subsequent HSCT. Two patients with B-ALL in MRD-negative remission received blinatumomab due to severe infection and remained in remission after chemotherapy continuation. CONCLUSIONS: Blinatumomab and inotuzumab can induce deep remissions in patients with rrALL and facilitate subsequent HSCT or other cellular therapies. Blinatumomab can also serve as an effective bridging therapy during severe infection. The optimal timing, choice of immunotherapeutic agent(s), and duration of responses require further investigation via larger-scale clinical trials.

Sinusoidal obstructive syndrome (SOS), or veno-occlusive disease, of the liver has been recognized as a complex, life-threatening complication in the posthematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) setting. The diagnostic criteria for SOS have evolved over the last several decades with a greater understanding of the underlying pathophysiology, with 2 recent diagnostic criteria introduced in 2018 (European Society of Bone Marrow Transplant [EBMT] criteria) and 2020 (Cairo criteria). We sought out to evaluate the performance characteristics in diagnosing and grading SOS in pediatric patients of the 4 different diagnostic criteria (Baltimore, Modified Seattle, EBMT, and Cairo) and severity grading systems (defined by the EBMT and Cairo criteria). Retrospective chart review of children, adolescent, and young adults who underwent conditioned autologous and allogeneic HSCT between 2017 and 2021 at a single pediatric institution. A total of 250 consecutive patients underwent at least 1 HSCT at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco for a total of 307 HSCT. The day 100 cumulative incidence of SOS was 12.1%, 21.1%, 28.4%, and 28.4% per the Baltimore, Modified Seattle, EBMT, and Cairo criteria, respectively (P < .001). We found that patients diagnosed with grade ≥4 SOS per the Cairo criteria were more likely to be admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (92% versus 58%, P = .035) and intubated (85% versus 32%, P = .002) than those diagnosed with grade ≥4 per EBMT criteria. Age <3 years-old (HR 1.76, 95% [1.04 to 2.98], P = .036), an abnormal body mass index (HR 1.69, 95% [1.06 to 2.68], P = .027), and high-risk patients per our institutional guidelines (HR 1.68, 95% [1.02 to 2.76], P = .041) were significantly associated with SOS per the Cairo criteria. We demonstrate that age <3 years, abnormal body mass index, and other high-risk criteria associate strongly with subsequent SOS development. Patients with moderate to severe SOS based on Cairo severity grading system may correlate better with clinical course based on ICU admissions and intubations when compared to the EBMT severity grading system.

Transplant associated thrombotic microangiopathy (TA-TMA) is a complication of hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) associated with endothelial injury resulting in severe end organ damage, acute and long-term morbidity, and mortality. Myeloablative conditioning is a known risk factor, though specific causative agents have not been identified. We hypothesized that the combination of cyclophosphamide and thiotepa (CY + TT) is particularly toxic to the endothelium, placing patients at elevated risk for TA-TMA. We conducted a retrospective review of pediatric and young adult patients who received conditioned autologous and allogeneic HCT between 2012 and August 2023 at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital, San Francisco. We excluded patients undergoing gene therapy or triple tandem transplants for brain tumors. Neuroblastoma tandem transplants were classified a single transplant occurrence. High dose N-acetylcysteine (NAC) prophylaxis was incorporated into the institutional standard of care from December 2016-May 2019 and May 2022-August 2023. Defibrotide was given prophylactically to patients deemed high-risk for sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) per institutional guidelines or on clinical trial NCT#02851407 for SOS prophylaxis or NCT#03384693 for TA-TMA prophylaxis. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to estimate the 1-year cumulative incidence of TA-TMA. Univariate analysis was performed for each of the potential risk factors of interest using log-rank tests and bivariate analysis with Cox regression models using backward selection and hazard ratios were built using all covariates with a univariate P-value < .2 for allogeneic HCT. SPSS (v29) was used to estimate all summary statistics, cumulative incidences, and uni- and bi-variate analyses. A total of 558 transplants were performed with 43 patients developing TA-TMA, for a 1-year cumulative incidence of 8.6% (95% CI, 5.9-11.3) and 7.2% (95% CI, 2.9-11.5) in allogeneic and autologous HCTs, respectively (P = .62). In allogeneic recipients (n = 417), the 1-year cumulative incidence of TA-TMA with CY + TT as part of conditioning was 35.7% (95% CI, 15.7-55.7) compared to 11.7% (95% CI, 7.2-16.2) with either CY or TT alone, and 1.2% (95% CI, 0-2.8) if neither agent was included in the conditioning regimen (P < .001). Use of either CY or TT (HR = 10.14; P = .002) or CY + TT (HR = 35.93; P < .001), viral infections (HR = 4.3; P = .017) and fungal infections (HR = 2.98; P = 0.027) were significant factors resulting in increased risk for developing TA-TMA. In subjects undergoing autologous HCT (n = 141), the 1-year cumulative incidence of TA-TMA with CY + TT was 19.6% (95% CI, 8.8-30.6) while TA-TMA did not occur in patients receiving either CY or TT alone or when neither were included (P < .001). TA-TMA occurred only in patients with neuroblastoma receiving CY + TT as part of their conditioning. For autologous patients who received CY + TT, those who were CMV seronegative at the time of HCT had an incidence of TA-TMA of 6.7% (95% CI, 0.1-15.7) compared to 38.1% (95% CI, 35-41.2) for those CMV seropositive (P = .007). These data show that CY or TT alone or in combination as part of pre-transplant conditioning prior to HCT increase the incidence of TA-TMA. Alternative conditioning excluding the combination of CY + TT should be considered whenever possible to limit the development of TA-TMA.

Objective: To determine the incidence, risk factors, and outcomes of pulmonary hypertension (PH) in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) after pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HCT). Methods: This was a retrospective study of pediatric patients who underwent allogeneic HCT between January 2008-December 2014 at a center contributing to the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research data registry. Incidence of PH was assessed from PICU diagnostic codes from records merged from the Virtual Pediatric Systems database. Regression and survival analyses identified factors associated with post-HCT PH. Additional post-HCT morbidities and survival after PH were also assessed. Results: Among 6,995 HCT recipients, there were 29 cases of PH, a cumulative incidence of 0.42% (95% CI 0.27%-0.57%) at 60 months post-HCT. In the sub-cohort of 1,067 patients requiring intensive care after HCT, this accounted for a PH prevalence of 2.72% (95% CI 1.74-3.69%). There was an increased risk of developing PH associated with Black/African American race, metabolic disorders, partially HLA-matched or cord blood allografts, graft-versus-host prophylaxis regimen, and lower pre-HCT functional status. Patients who developed PH had significant PICU comorbidities including heart failure, pulmonary hemorrhage, respiratory failure, renal failure, and infections. Survival at 6 months after diagnosis of post-HCT PH was 51.7% (95% CI 32.5%-67.9%). Conclusions: PH is a rare but serious complication in the pediatric post-HCT population. A significant burden of additional comorbidities, procedural interventions, and risk of mortality is associated with its development. Close monitoring and prompt intervention for this severe complication are necessary in this vulnerable population.

We hypothesized that inferior disease-free survival (DFS) seen in older patients undergoing αß/CD19-T-cell depleted (AB-TCD) haploidentical hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) for patients with hematologic malignancies was due to excessive exposure to rabbit antithymocyte globulin (rATG; Thymoglobulin®). Between 2015-2023, 163 patients with a median age of 13 years (range, 0.4-27.4) underwent AB-TCD haploidentical HCT for treatment of ALL (n=98), AML/MDS (n=49), or other malignancies (n=16) at nine centers on two prospective trials. Exposures of rATG pre- and post-HCT were predicted with a validated pharmacokinetic (PK) model. ROC curves were used to identify optimal target windows of rATG exposure related to outcomes. We identified four quadrants of rATG exposure - quadrant 1 (n=52): high pre-HCT AUC (≥50 AU*day/mL) and low post-HCT (<12 AU*day/L); quadrant 2 (n=47): both low pre-HCT and post-HCT AUCs, quadrant 3 (n=13): low pre-HCT AUC and high post-HCT, and quadrant 4 (n=51): both high pre- and post-HCT AUCs. Quadrant 1 had a 3-year DFS of 86.5% (95% CI, 76.3-96.7%), compared to quadrant 2 (64.6%; 95% CI, 49.1-80.1%), quadrant 3 (32.9%; 95% CI, 0.1-80.5%) or quadrant 4 (48.2%; 95% CI, 22.1-63.3%) (p<0.001). Adjusted regression analysis demonstrated additional factors associated with increased hazard for worse DFS: MRD-positivity (HR=2.45; 1.36-4.41; p=0.003) and CMV R+/D- serostatus (HR=3.33; 1.8-6.16; p<0.001). Non-optimal rATG exposure exhibited the strongest effect in unadjusted (HR=4.24; 1.79-10.03; p=0.001) and adjusted (MRD status or CMV serostatus) analyses (HR=3.84, 1.63-9.05; p=0.002). High exposure to rATG post-HCT is associated with inferior DFS following AB-TCD haploidentical HCT for pediatric patients with hematologic malignancies. Model-based dosing of rATG to achieve optimal exposure may improve DFS. Clinical trials: NCT02646839 & NCT04337515.

Diffuse alveolar hemorrhage (DAH) is a life-threatening complication of hematopoietic cellular therapy (HCT). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of DAH treatments on outcomes using data from consecutive HCT patients clinically diagnosed with DAH from 3 institutions between January 2018-August 2022. Endpoints included sustained complete response (sCR) defined as bleeding cessation without recurrent bleeding, and non-relapse mortality (NRM). Forty children developed DAH at a median of 56.5 days post-HCT (range 1-760). Thirty-five (88%) had at least one concurrent endothelial disorder, including transplant-associated thrombotic microangiopathy (n=30), sinusoidal obstructive syndrome (n=19), or acute graft versus host disease (n=10). Fifty percent had a concurrent pulmonary infection at the time of DAH. Common treatments included steroids (n=17, 25% sCR), inhaled tranexamic acid (INH TXA,n=26, 48% sCR), and inhaled recombinant activated factor VII (INH fVIIa, n=10, 73% sCR). NRM was 56% 100 days after first pulmonary bleed and 70% at 1 year. Steroid treatment was associated with increased risk of NRM (HR 2.25 95% CI 1.07-4.71, p=0.03), while treatment with INH TXA (HR 0.43, 95% CI 0.19- 0.96, p=0.04) and INH fVIIa (HR 0.22, 95% CI 0.07-0.62, p=0.005) were associated with decreased risk of NRM. Prospective studies are warranted to validate these findings.

Terminal complement blockade by humanised monoclonal antibody eculizumab has been used to treat transplantation-associated thrombotic microangiopathy (TA-TMA) in recent years. This retrospective international study conducted by the Paediatric Diseases (PDWP) and Inborn Error Working Party (IEWP) of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) describes outcome and response of 82 paediatric patients from 29 centres who developed TA-TMA and were treated with eculizumab between January 2014 and May 2019. The median time from hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) to TA-TMA manifestation was 92 days (range: 7-606) and from TA-TMA diagnosis to the start of eculizumab treatment 6 days (range: 0-135). Most patients received eculizumab weekly (72%, n = 55) with a standard weight (kg)-based dose (78%, n = 64). Six months from beginning of eculizumab therapy, the cumulative incidence of TA-TMA resolution was 36.6% (95% CI: 26.2-47) and the overall survival (OS) was 47.1% (95% CI: 35.9-57.5). All 43 patients with unresolved TA-TMA died. The cause of death was HSCT-related in 41 patients. This study also documents poor outcome of patients without aGvHD and their frequent concomitant viral infections. Considering recent publications, intensified eculizumab dosing and complement monitoring could potentially improve upon outcomes observed in this study.

Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) can lead to considerable complications and treatment-related mortality (TRM); therefore, a detailed assessment of risks is essential. The Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation-Comorbidity Index (HCT-CI) can predict both TRM and overall survival (OS). Although the HCT-CI has been validated as a useful tool for first HCT, its potential utility for second HCT has not yet been investigated. Here we aimed to evaluate the utility of the HCT-CI score in assessing the risk of TRM and OS in the setting of a second allogeneic HCT. This was a retrospective analysis of all pediatric patients (age <21 years) who underwent a second allogeneic HCT at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco between 2008 and 2019. According to their HCT-CI, patients were classified as "low risk" with an HCT-CI of 0 or "intermediate-high risk" with an HCT-CI ≥1. A total of 59 patients were included in the study. Our primary endpoint was TRM, observed at 100 days, 180 days, 1 year, and last follow-up following HCT, and our secondary endpoint was OS at 1 year and at 5 years or last follow-up. We also evaluated outcomes of patients admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit based on the HCT-CI score. Seventy-six percent of patients had an HCT-CI of 0. The most frequent comorbidities were pulmonary, seen in 7 patients (12%; 95% CI, 5% to 23%), including 5 (71%) with moderate and 2 (29%) with severe comorbidities. The OS and the cumulative incidence of TRM at 1 year for the entire cohort were 81% (95% CI, 69% to 90%) and 12% (95% CI, 5% to 22%), respectively. The cumulative incidence of TRM and OS at 1 year showed a significant correlation with HCT-CI score; TRM was 4% (95% CI, 1% to 13%) for an HCT-CI of 0 versus 36% (95% CI, 13% to 60%) for an HCT-CI ≥1 (P < .001), and OS was 89% (95% CI, 75% to 99%) for an HCT-CI of 0 versus 57% (95% CI, 28% to 78%) for an HCT-CI ≥1 (P = .003). After adjusting for covariates, HCT-CI continued to be associated with both TRM (P = .004) and OS (P = .003). In addition, comparing patients with malignancies and nonmalignant disorders, disease-free-survival at last follow-up was higher in the nonmalignant disorder group and also was influenced by the HCT-CI score in each group (P = .0035). There also was a significant difference in outcomes of patients admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit; 15 patients (68%) with an HCT-CI of 0 were alive at last follow-up, compared with only two (22%) with an HCT-CI ≥1 (P = .016). HCT-CI has an impact on TRM and OS and may serve as a predictor of outcomes of second allogeneic transplantation. Although this study was conducted in a relatively small sample, it is the first to investigate the utility of the HCT-CI score in predicting outcomes after a second allogeneic HCT in pediatric recipients. © 2021 American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy. Transplant-associated thrombotic microangiopathy (TA-TMA) is an endothelial injury syndrome that complicates hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT). Morbidity and mortality from TA-TMA remain high, making prevention critical. We describe our retrospective single-center experience of TA-TMA after pediatric allogeneic HSCT and present a novel pre-HSCT risk-stratification system and prophylaxis regimen. From January 2012 through October 2019, 257 patients underwent 292 allogeneic HSCTs. Prospective risk stratification was introduced in December 2016. High-risk (HR) patients were treated with combination prophylaxis with eicosapentaenoic acid and N-acetylcysteine. The 1-year cumulative incidence of TA-TMA was 6.3% (95% confidence interval [CI], 3.2-9.4). Age ≥10 years, myeloablative conditioning with total body irradiation, HLA mismatch, diagnosis of severe aplastic anemia or malignancy, prior calcineurin inhibitor exposure, and recipient cytomegalovirus seropositivity were found to be pre-HSCT risk factors for development of TA-TMA. Before routine prophylaxis, TA-TMA rates were significantly different between the HR and standard-risk groups, at 28.2% (95% CI, 0-12.7) vs 3.2% (0.1-6.3), respectively (P < .001). After introduction of prophylaxis, the 1-year cumulative incidence of TA-TMA in the HR group decreased to 4.5% (95% CI, 0-13.1; P = .062, compared with the incidence before prophylaxis). Multicenter pediatric studies are needed to validate these risk criteria and to confirm the efficacy of the prophylactic regimen.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a tumor-predisposition disorder caused by germline mutations in NF1. NF1 patients have an 8-16% lifetime risk of developing a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST), a highly aggressive soft-tissue sarcoma, often arising from preexisting benign plexiform neurofibromas (PNs) and atypical neurofibromas (ANFs). ANFs are distinct from both PN and MPNST, representing an intermediate step in malignant transformation. METHODS: In the first comprehensive genomic analysis of ANF originating from multiple patients, we performed tumor/normal whole-exome sequencing (WES) of 16 ANFs. In addition, we conducted WES of 3 MPNSTs, copy-number meta-analysis of 26 ANFs and 28 MPNSTs, and whole transcriptome sequencing analysis of 5 ANFs and 5 MPNSTs. RESULTS: We identified a low number of mutations (median 1, range 0-5) in the exomes of ANFs (only NF1 somatic mutations were recurrent), and frequent deletions of CDKN2A/B (69%) and SMARCA2 (42%). We determined that polycomb repressor complex 2 (PRC2) genes EED and SUZ12 were frequently mutated, deleted, or downregulated in MPNSTs but not in ANFs. Our pilot gene expression study revealed upregulated NRAS, MDM2, CCND1/2/3, and CDK4/6 in ANFs and MPNSTs, and overexpression of EZH2 in MPNSTs only. CONCLUSIONS: The PN-ANF transition is primarily driven by the deletion of CDKN2A/B. Further progression from ANF to MPNST likely involves broad chromosomal rearrangements and frequent inactivation of the PRC2 genes, loss of the DNA repair genes, and copy-number increase of signal transduction and cell-cycle and pluripotency self-renewal genes.

Background: Neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) leads to the development of benign and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST). MPNST have been described to develop in preexisting benign plexiform neurofibromas (PN) and have a poor prognosis. Atypical neurofibromas (ANF) were recently described as precursor lesions for MPNST, making early detection and management of ANF a possible strategy to prevent MPNST. We aimed to clinically characterize ANF and identify management approaches. Methods: We analyzed clinical, imaging, and pathology findings of all patients with NF1 and ANF at 3 institutions. Results: Sixty-three patients had 76 ANF (32M/31F; median age 27.1 y). On MRI, most ANF appeared as distinct nodular lesions and were 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) avid. Forty-six ANF were associated with pain, 19 with motor weakness, 45 were palpable or visible, and 13 had no clinical signs. Completely resected ANF (N = 57) have not recurred (median follow-up, 4.1 y; range, 0-14 y). Four ANF transformed into MPNST and 17 patients had a history of MPNST in a different location than was their ANF. Conclusions: Growth of distinct nodular lesions, pain, and FDG-PET avidity should raise concern for ANF in NF1. Patients with ANF are at greater risk for development of MPNST. Complete resection of ANF may prevent development of MPNST.

Primary CNS lymphoma (PCNSL) harbors mutations that reinforce B cell receptor (BCR) signaling. Ibrutinib, a Bruton's tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibitor, targets BCR signaling and is particularly active in lymphomas with mutations altering the BCR subunit CD79B and MYD88. We performed a proof-of-concept phase Ib study of ibrutinib monotherapy followed by ibrutinib plus chemotherapy (DA-TEDDi-R). In 18 PCNSL patients, 94% showed tumor reductions with ibrutinib alone, including patients having PCNSL with CD79B and/or MYD88 mutations, and 86% of evaluable patients achieved complete remission with DA-TEDDi-R. Increased aspergillosis was observed with ibrutinib monotherapy and DA-TEDDi-R. Aspergillosis was linked to BTK-dependent fungal immunity in a murine model. PCNSL is highly dependent on BCR signaling, and ibrutinib appears to enhance the efficacy of chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Worse chemotherapy response for neurofibromatosis type 1- (NF1-) associated compared to sporadic malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST) has been reported. METHODS: We evaluated the objective response (OR) rate of patients with AJCC Stage III/IV chemotherapy-naive NF1 MPNST versus sporadic MPNST after 4 cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, 2 cycles of ifosfamide/doxorubicin, and 2 cycles of ifosfamide/etoposide. A Simon optimal two-stage design was used (target response rate 40%). RESULTS: 34 NF1 (median age 33 years) and 14 sporadic (median age 40 years) MPNST patients enrolled. Five of 28 (17.9%) evaluable NF1 MPNST patients had a partial response (PR), as did 4 of 9 (44.4%) patients with sporadic MPNST. Stable disease (SD) was achieved in 22 NF1 and 4 sporadic MPNST patients. In both strata, results in the initial stages met criteria for expansion of enrollment. Only 1 additional PR was observed in the expanded NF1 stratum. Enrollment was slower than expected and the trial closed before full accrual. CONCLUSIONS: This trial was not powered to detect differences in response rates between NF1 and sporadic MPNST. While the OR rate was lower in NF1 compared to sporadic MPNST, qualitative responses were similar, and disease stabilization was achieved in most patients.

RESUMO

Three diamino, dihetero-phenol ligands were synthesized by sequential Mannich condensations. These ligands were combined with FeCl3 to produce three five-coordinate Fe(III) complexes that are structural models for the enzyme 3,4-PCD. The three Fe(III) complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, single crystal X-ray diffraction studies, UV-vis spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. Combining the Fe(III) complexes with 3,5-di-t-butylcatechol and O2 resulted in oxidative cleavage similar to the function of 3,4-PCD.
