RESUMO

We report on the direct search for cosmic relic neutrinos using data acquired during the first two science campaigns of the KATRIN experiment in 2019. Beta-decay electrons from a high-purity molecular tritium gas source are analyzed by a high-resolution MAC-E filter around the end point at 18.57 keV. The analysis is sensitive to a local relic neutrino overdensity ratio of η<9.7×10^{10}/α (1.1×10^{11}/α) at a 90% (95%) confidence level with α=1 (0.5) for Majorana (Dirac) neutrinos. A fit of the integrated electron spectrum over a narrow interval around the end point accounting for relic neutrino captures in the tritium source reveals no significant overdensity. This work improves the results obtained by the previous neutrino mass experiments at Los Alamos and Troitsk. We furthermore update the projected final sensitivity of the KATRIN experiment to η<1×10^{10}/α at 90% confidence level, by relying on updated operational conditions.

RESUMO

We report on the light sterile neutrino search from the first four-week science run of the KATRIN experiment in 2019. Beta-decay electrons from a high-purity gaseous molecular tritium source are analyzed by a high-resolution MAC-E filter down to 40 eV below the endpoint at 18.57 keV. We consider the framework with three active neutrinos and one sterile neutrino. The analysis is sensitive to the mass, m_{4}, of the fourth mass state for m_{4}^{2}≲1000 eV^{2} and to active-to-sterile neutrino mixing down to |U_{e4}|^{2}≳2×10^{-2}. No significant spectral distortion is observed and exclusion bounds on the sterile mass and mixing are reported. These new limits supersede the Mainz results for m_{4}^{2}≲1000 eV^{2} and improve the Troitsk bound for m_{4}^{2}<30 eV^{2}. The reactor and gallium anomalies are constrained for 100<Δm_{41}^{2}<1000 eV^{2}.

RESUMO

We present the first search for bosonic superweakly interacting massive particles (super-WIMPs) as keV-scale dark matter candidates performed with the GERDA experiment. GERDA is a neutrinoless double-ß decay experiment which operates high-purity germanium detectors enriched in ^{76}Ge in an ultralow background environment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) of INFN in Italy. Searches were performed for pseudoscalar and vector particles in the mass region from 60 keV/c^{2} to 1 MeV/c^{2}. No evidence for a dark matter signal was observed, and the most stringent constraints on the couplings of super-WIMPs with masses above 120 keV/c^{2} have been set. As an example, at a mass of 150 keV/c^{2} the most stringent direct limits on the dimensionless couplings of axionlike particles and dark photons to electrons of g_{ae}<3×10^{-12} and α^{'}/α<6.5×10^{-24} at 90% credible interval, respectively, were obtained.

The GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) experiment searched for the lepton-number-violating neutrinoless double-ß (0νßß) decay of ^{76}Ge, whose discovery would have far-reaching implications in cosmology and particle physics. By operating bare germanium diodes, enriched in ^{76}Ge, in an active liquid argon shield, GERDA achieved an unprecedently low background index of 5.2×10^{-4} counts/(keV kg yr) in the signal region and met the design goal to collect an exposure of 100 kg yr in a background-free regime. When combined with the result of Phase I, no signal is observed after 127.2 kg yr of total exposure. A limit on the half-life of 0νßß decay in ^{76}Ge is set at T_{1/2}>1.8×10^{26} yr at 90% C.L., which coincides with the sensitivity assuming no signal.

The GERDA experiment searches for the lepton-number-violating neutrinoless double-ß decay of ^{76}Ge (^{76}Ge→^{76}Se+2e^{-}) operating bare Ge diodes with an enriched ^{76}Ge fraction in liquid argon. The exposure for broad-energy germanium type (BEGe) detectors is increased threefold with respect to our previous data release. The BEGe detectors feature an excellent background suppression from the analysis of the time profile of the detector signals. In the analysis window a background level of 1.0_{-0.4}^{+0.6}×10^{-3} counts/(keV kg yr) has been achieved; if normalized to the energy resolution this is the lowest ever achieved in any 0νßß experiment. No signal is observed and a new 90% C.L. lower limit for the half-life of 8.0×10^{25} yr is placed when combining with our previous data. The expected median sensitivity assuming no signal is 5.8×10^{25} yr.

Background: Understanding the course of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the factors that impact this is essential to inform decisions about when and for whom screening and intervention are likely to be beneficial. Objective: To provide meta-analytic evidence of the course of recovery from PTSD in the first year following trauma, and the factors that influence that recovery. Method: We conducted a meta-analysis of observational studies of adult PTSD prevalence which included at least two assessments within the first 12 months following trauma exposure, examining prevalence statistics through to 2 years post-trauma. We examined trauma intentionality (intentional or non-intentional), PTSD assessment method (clinician or self-report), sample sex distribution, and age as moderators of PTSD prevalence over time. Results: We identified 78 eligible studies including 16,484 participants. Pooled prevalence statistics indicated that over a quarter of individuals presented with PTSD at 1 month post-trauma, with this proportion reducing by a third between 1 and 3 months. Beyond 3 months, any prevalence changes were detected over longer intervals and were small in magnitude. Intentional trauma, younger age, and female sex were associated with higher PTSD prevalence at 1 month. In addition, higher proportions of females, intentional trauma exposure, and higher baseline PTSD prevalence were each associated with larger reductions in prevalence over time. Conclusions: Recovery from PTSD following acute trauma exposure primarily occurs in the first 3 months post-trauma. Screening measures and intervention approaches offered at 3 months may better target persistent symptoms than those conducted prior to this point. HIGHLIGHTS: PTSD rates in the immediate aftermath of trauma exposure decline from 27% at 1 month to 18% at 3 months post-trauma, showing significant spontaneous recovery.Problems appear to stabilize after 3 months.Screening/intervention for PTSD at 3 months post-trauma is indicated.

The GERmanium Detector Array (Gerda) collaboration searched for neutrinoless double- ß decay in 76 Ge using isotopically enriched high purity germanium detectors at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso of INFN. After Phase I (2011-2013), the experiment benefited from several upgrades, including an additional active veto based on LAr instrumentation and a significant increase of mass by point-contact germanium detectors that improved the half-life sensitivity of Phase II (2015-2019) by an order of magnitude. At the core of the background mitigation strategy, the analysis of the time profile of individual pulses provides a powerful topological discrimination of signal-like and background-like events. Data from regular 228 Th calibrations and physics data were both considered in the evaluation of the pulse shape discrimination performance. In this work, we describe the various methods applied to the data collected in Gerda Phase II corresponding to an exposure of 103.7 kg year. These methods suppress the background by a factor of about 5 in the region of interest around Q ß ß = 2039  keV, while preserving ( 81 ± 3 ) % of the signal. In addition, an exhaustive list of parameters is provided which were used in the final data analysis.

The GERmanium Detector Array (Gerda) collaboration searched for neutrinoless double- ß decay in 76 Ge with an array of about 40 high-purity isotopically-enriched germanium detectors. The experimental signature of the decay is a monoenergetic signal at Q ß ß = 2039.061 ( 7 )  keV in the measured summed energy spectrum of the two emitted electrons. Both the energy reconstruction and resolution of the germanium detectors are crucial to separate a potential signal from various backgrounds, such as neutrino-accompanied double- ß decays allowed by the Standard Model. The energy resolution and stability were determined and monitored as a function of time using data from regular 228 Th calibrations. In this work, we describe the calibration process and associated data analysis of the full Gerda dataset, tailored to preserve the excellent resolution of the individual germanium detectors when combining data over several years.

Food allergy is an increasing problem in Europe and elsewhere and severe reactions to food are also becoming more common. As food allergy is usually associated with other forms of allergic sensitisation it is likely that many risk factors are common to all forms of allergy. However the potential severity of the disease and the specific public heath measures required for food allergy make it important to identify the specific risk factors for this condition. Food allergy is unusual in that it often manifests itself very early in life and commonly remits with the development of tolerance. Hypotheses that explain the distribution of food allergy include specific genetic polymorphisms, the nature of the allergens involved and the unique exposure to large quantities of allergen through the gut. Progress has been made in developing more specific and testable hypotheses but the evidence for any of these is still only preliminary. Further collaborative research is required to develop an appropriate public health response to this growing problem.

Polyethylene glycol 1540, added to culture solution in amounts sufficient to reduce the water potential to -10 atmospheres, inhibited respiration in Chlorella much more than mannitol solutions at -10 atmospheres. This occurred despite the purification of the polyethylene glycol by passage through exchange columns. The toxic properties, which developed some time after purification, increased with time of storage of solutions of polyethylene glycol 1540 at room temperature.

The trillionfold concentration of sound energy by a trapped gas bubble, so as to emit picosecond flashes of ultraviolet light, is found to be extremely sensitive to doping with a noble gas. Increasing the noble gas content of a nitrogen bubble to about 1% dramatically stabilizes the bubble motion and increases the light emission by over an order of magnitude to a value that exceeds the sonoluminescence of either gas alone. The spectrum also strongly depends on the nature of the gas inside the bubble: Xenon yields a spectral peak at about 300 nanometers, whereas the helium spectrum is so strongly ultraviolet that its peak is obscured by the cutoff of water.

Peridinin-chlorophyll-protein, a water-soluble light-harvesting complex that has a blue-green absorbing carotenoid as its main pigment, is present in most photosynthetic dinoflagellates. Its high-resolution (2.0 angstrom) x-ray structure reveals a noncrystallographic trimer in which each polypeptide contains an unusual jellyroll fold of the alpha-helical amino- and carboxyl-terminal domains. These domains constitute a scaffold with pseudo-twofold symmetry surrounding a hydrophobic cavity filled by two lipid, eight peridinin, and two chlorophyll a molecules. The structural basis for efficient excitonic energy transfer from peridinin to chlorophyll is found in the clustering of peridinins around the chlorophylls at van der Waals distances.

The GERmanium Detector Array (Gerda) is a low background experiment located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy, which searches for neutrinoless double-beta decay of 76 Ge into 76 Se+2e - . Gerda has been conceived in two phases. Phase II, which started in December 2015, features several novelties including 30 new 76Ge enriched detectors. These were manufactured according to the Broad Energy Germanium (BEGe) detector design that has a better background discrimination capability and energy resolution compared to formerly widely-used types. Prior to their installation, the new BEGe detectors were mounted in vacuum cryostats and characterized in detail in the Hades underground laboratory in Belgium. This paper describes the properties and the overall performance of these detectors during operation in vacuum. The characterization campaign provided not only direct input for Gerda Phase II data collection and analyses, but also allowed to study detector phenomena, detector correlations as well as to test the accuracy of pulse shape simulation codes.

A discovery that neutrinos are Majorana fermions would have profound implications for particle physics and cosmology. The Majorana character of neutrinos would make possible the neutrinoless double-ß (0νßß) decay, a matter-creating process without the balancing emission of antimatter. The GERDA Collaboration searches for the 0νßß decay of 76Ge by operating bare germanium detectors in an active liquid argon shield. With a total exposure of 82.4 kg⋅year, we observe no signal and derive a lower half-life limit of T 1/2 > 0.9 × 1026 years (90% C.L.). Our T 1/2 sensitivity, assuming no signal, is 1.1 × 1026 years. Combining the latter with those from other 0νßß decay searches yields a sensitivity to the effective Majorana neutrino mass of 0.07 to 0.16 electron volts.

Single molecule spectroscopy experiments are reported for native peridinin-chlorophyll a-protein (PCP) complexes, and three reconstituted light-harvesting systems, where an N-terminal construct of native PCP from Amphidinium carterae has been reconstituted with chlorophyll (Chl) mixtures: with Chl a, with Chl b and with both Chl a and Chl b. Using laser excitation into peridinin (Per) absorption band we take advantage of sub-picosecond energy transfer from Per to Chl that is order of magnitude faster than the Förster energy transfer between the Chl molecules to independently populate each Chl in the complex. The results indicate that reconstituted PCP complexes contain only two Chl molecules, so that they are spectroscopically equivalent to monomers of native-trimeric-PCP and do not aggregate further. Through removal of ensemble averaging we are able to observe for single reconstituted PCP complexes two clear steps in fluorescence intensity timetraces attributed to subsequent bleaching of the two Chl molecules. Importantly, the bleaching of the first Chl affects neither the energy nor the intensity of the emission of the second one. Since in strongly interacting systems Chl is a very efficient quencher of the fluorescence, this behavior implies that the two fluorescing Chls within a PCP monomer interact very weakly with each other which makes it possible to independently monitor the fluorescence of each individual chromophore in the complex. We apply this property, which distinguishes PCP from other light-harvesting systems, to measure the distribution of the energy splitting between two chemically identical Chl a molecules contained in the PCP monomer that reaches 280 cm(-1). In agreement with this interpretation, stepwise bleaching of fluorescence is also observed for native PCP complexes, which contain six Chls. Most PCP complexes reconstituted with both Chl a and Chl b show two emission lines, whose wavelengths correspond to the fluorescence of Chl a and Chl b. This is a clear proof that these two different chromophores are present in a single PCP monomer. Single molecule fluorescence studies of PCP complexes, both native and artificially reconstituted with chlorophyll mixtures, provide new and detailed information necessary to fully understand the energy transfer in this unique light-harvesting system.

Exposure of HeLa cells to tetraphenylphosphonium cation (TPP+) results in a rapid accumulation intracellularly, and a steady-state level is reached within 10 min. Accumulation of [3H]TPP+ in HeLa cells is reduced under the following conditions: (i) after preincubation of cells in buffered saline or in medium containing two- to fourfold higher concentrations of amino acids, (ii) exposure to the alkylating agent L-1-tosylamido-2-phenyl-ethylchloromethyl ketone, (iii) ouabain-mediated inhibition of the Na+, K+ ATPase, and (iv) high external K+ concentrations. In contrast, addition of serum increases the uptake of TPP+. In synchronized cells, intracellular levels of TPP+ differ at various stages of cell cycle and are lowest in mitosis.

Cryptophyte algae contain two kinds of light-harvesting protein, phycobiliproteins and chlorophyll a,c-binding proteins. The beta subunit of the phycobiliprotein phycoerythrin (PE) is encoded in the chloroplast. Genes for the other PE polypeptides are located in the nucleus but little is known of their organization. We cloned and sequenced six cpeA genes encoding the phycoerythrin alpha subunit from a genomic library of the cryptophyte Rhodomonas CS24. Derived peptide sequences of the cpeA genes show that alpha subunits occur in at least two forms, a longer alpha1 form and a shorter alpha2 form. Remarkably, all six cpeA genes occur in divergent pairs encoding one alpha1 and one alpha2 subunit. Four cac genes encoding chlorophyll a,c-binding proteins were cloned and sequenced and also found to occur in divergent pairs comprising one cac1 and one cac2 gene. Inspection of the predicted targeting sequences of the alpha1 and alpha2 phycoerythrin polypeptides shows that only the alpha1 polypeptides have a thylakoid lumen targeting sequence, corresponding to the TAT pathway. Given the previously reported lack of a lumen-targeting sequence on the beta subunit, we propose a novel import mechanism in which the entire alpha1alpha2 betabeta phycoerythrin complex is assembled in the stroma and transported into the thylakoid under the direction of the single targeting sequence on the alpha1 protein. The FAP motif implicated in plastid targeting in diatoms appears to be conserved in this cryptophyte.

Reconstitution of the 16 kDa N-terminal domain of the peridinin-chlorophyll-protein, N-PCP, with mixtures of chlorophyll a (Chl a) and Chl b, resulted in 32 kDa complexes containing two pigment clusters, each bound to one N-PCP. Besides homo-chlorophyllous complexes, hetero-chlorophyllous ones were obtained that contain Chl a in one pigment cluster, and Chl b in the other. Binding of Chl b is stronger than that of the native pigment, Chl a. Energy transfer from Chl b to Chl a is efficient, but there are only weak interactions between the two pigments. Individual homo- and hetero-chlorophyllous complexes were investigated by single molecule spectroscopy using excitation into the peridinin absorption band and scanning of the Chl fluorescence, the latter show frequently well resolved emissions of the two pigments.

In the emerging field of Proteomics, protein microarrays represent an elegant solution for the simultaneous analysis of the (i) abundance, (ii) function and (iii) interaction of proteins on a system-wide scale. The great power of microarray-based miniature solid-phase immunoassays lies in their potential to investigate in parallel large numbers of analyte pairs while employing only minute amounts of biological sample material (e.g., serum). This has inspired researchers to adopt this approach to the development of novel diagnostic tests with to date published examples in the fields of autoimmune diseases, allergy and cancer. Here, we discuss recent advancements in the development of protein microarrays for the profiling of IgE antibodies in the diagnosis of Type-1 related allergic diseases.
