RESUMO

Porous ionic polymers with unique features have exhibited high performance in various applications. However, the fabrication of functional porous ionic polymers with custom functionality and porosity for efficient removal of low-concentration SO2 remains challenging. Herein, a novel nitrogen-enriched porous ionic polymer NH2Py-PIP is prepared featuring high-content nitrogen sites (15.9 wt.%), adequate ionic sites (1.22 mmol g-1), and a hierarchical porous structure. The proposed construction pathway relies on a tailored nitrogen-functionalized cross-linker NH2Py, which effectively introduces abundant functional sites and improves the porosity of porous ionic polymers. NH2Py-PIP with a well-engineered SO2-affinity environment achieves excellent SO2/CO2 selectivity (1165) and high SO2 adsorption capacity (1.13 mmol g-1 at 0.002 bar), as well as enables highly efficient and reversible dynamic separation performance. Modeling studies further elucidate that the nitrogen sites and bromide anions collaboratively promote preferential adsorption of SO2. The unique design in this work provides new insights into constructing functional porous ionic polymers for high-efficiency separations.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Roots are essential for plant growth and have a variety of functions, such as anchoring the plant to the ground, absorbing water and nutrients from the soil, and sensing abiotic stresses, among others. OsERF106MZ is a salinity-induced gene that is expressed in germinating seeds and rice seedling roots. However, the roles of OsERF106MZ in root growth remain poorly understood. RESULTS: Histochemical staining to examine ß-glucuronidase (GUS) activity in transgenic rice seedlings harboring OsERF106MZp::GUS indicated that OsERF106MZ is mainly expressed in the root exodermis, sclerenchyma layer, and vascular system. OsERF106MZ overexpression in rice seedlings leads to an increase in primary root (PR) length. The phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) is thought to act as a hidden architect of root system structure. The expression of the ABA biosynthetic gene OsAO3 is downregulated in OsERF106MZ-overexpressing roots under normal conditions, while the expression of OsNPC3, an AtNPC4 homolog involved in ABA sensitivity, is reduced in OsERF106MZ-overexpressing roots under both normal and NaCl-treated conditions. Under normal conditions, OsERF106MZ-overexpressing roots show a significantly reduced ABA level; moreover, exogenous application of 1.0 µM ABA can suppress OsERF106MZ-mediated root growth promotion. Additionally, OsERF106MZ-overexpressing roots display less sensitivity to ABA-mediated root growth inhibition when treated with 5.0 µM ABA under normal conditions or exposed to NaCl-treated conditions. Furthermore, chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP)-qPCR and luciferase (LUC) reporter assays showed that OsERF106MZ can bind directly to the sequence containing the GCC box in the promoter region of the OsAO3 gene and repress the expression of OsAO3. CONCLUSIONS: OsERF106MZ may play a role in maintaining root growth for resource uptake when rice seeds germinate under salinity stress by alleviating ABA-mediated root growth inhibition.

RESUMO

When a supercooled liquid approaches glass transition, viscous flow slows down greatly, but often the Brownian motion of a molecular probe in the host liquid does not slow down as much, causing the Stokes-Einstein relation to fail by orders of magnitude. Here we formulate a theory that relates the Brownian motion of the probe to two concurrent processes in the host liquid: viscous flow and molecular hopping. Molecular hopping prevails over viscous flow when the probe is small and the temperature is low. Our theory generalizes the Stokes-Einstein relation and fits the experimental data remarkably well.

RESUMO

The folding of two-dimensional epithelial sheets into specific three-dimensional structures is a fundamental tissue construction mechanism in animal development. A common mechanism that mediates epithelial folding is apical constriction, the active shrinking of cell apices driven by actomyosin contractions. It remains unclear whether cells outside of the constriction domain also contribute to folding. During Drosophila mesoderm invagination, ventrally localized mesoderm epithelium undergoes apical constriction and subsequently folds into a furrow. While the critical role of apical constriction in ventral furrow formation has been well demonstrated, it remains unclear whether, and if so, how the laterally localized ectodermal tissue adjacent to the mesoderm contributes to furrow invagination. In this study, we combine experimental and computational approaches to test the potential function of the ectoderm in mesoderm invagination. Through laser-mediated, targeted disruption of cell formation prior to gastrulation, we found that the presence of intact lateral ectoderm is important for the effective transition between apical constriction and furrow invagination in the mesoderm. In addition, using a laser-ablation approach widely used for probing tissue tension, we found that the lateral ectodermal tissues exhibit signatures of tissue compression when ablation was performed shortly before the onset of mesoderm invagination. These observations led to the hypothesis that in-plane compression from the surrounding ectoderm facilitates mesoderm invagination by triggering buckling of the mesoderm epithelium. In support of this notion, we show that the dynamics of tissue flow during mesoderm invagination displays characteristic of elastic buckling, and this tissue dynamics can be recapitulated by combining local apical constriction and global compression in a simulated elastic monolayer. We propose that Drosophila mesoderm invagination is achieved through epithelial buckling jointly mediated by apical constriction in the mesoderm and compression from the neighboring ectoderm.

RESUMO

The electronic structure of catalysts influences the electrocatalytic behavior. Herein, the electronic structure of NiO nanocrystals is modified by doping with a small amount of Li+. The Li+ doped NiO nanocrystals show much better OER activity than pristine NiO and LiNiO2, which is a result of tuned Fermi levels, stronger hybridization between Ni 3d and O 2p, and narrowed energy band gap. This work provides a facile strategy to regulate NiO electronic energy bands to promote OER performance.

RESUMO

Biomedical self-sustainable energy generation represents a new frontier of power solution for implantable biomedical devices (IMDs), such as cardiac pacemakers. However, almost all reported cardiac energy harvesting designs have not yet reached the stage of clinical translation. A major bottleneck has been the need of additional surgeries for the placements of these devices. Here, integrated piezoelectric-based energy harvesting and sensing designs are reported, which can be seamlessly incorporated into existing IMDs for ease of clinical translation. In vitro experiments validate the energy harvesting process by simulating the bending and twisting motion during heart cycle. Clinical translation is demonstrated in four porcine hearts in vivo under various conditions. Energy harvesting strategy utilizes pacemaker leads as a means of reducing the reliance on batteries and demonstrates the charging ability for extending the lifetime of a pacemaker battery by 20%, which provides a promising self-sustainable energy solution for IMDs. The additional self-powered blood pressure sensing is discussed, and the reported results demonstrate the potential in alerting arrhythmias by monitoring the right ventricular pressure variations. This combined cardiac energy harvesting and blood pressure sensing strategy provides a multifunctional, transformative while practical power and diagnosis solution for cardiac pacemakers and next generation of IMDs.

RESUMO

The programmable shape transition of a two-dimensional sheet to a three-dimensional (3D) structure in response to a variety of external stimuli has recently attracted increasing attention. Among the various shape changing materials, shape memory polymers (SMPs) can fix their temporary shape and/or their length and recover under proper thermal treatment. In this work, we create a bilayer composite by bonding one layer of elastomer with one layer of stretched SMPs, which can undergo a series of shape transitions via the storage and release of internal stresses. The programed shapes are achieved by adjusting the orientation and elongation of the SMPs. Meanwhile, the 3D structures exhibit tristability and can transit between hemihelical, left-handed helical, and right-handed helical shapes. Both theoretical analysis and finite element simulations were conducted to understand the mechanism of shape transformation and used to predict the deformed configuration by adjusting preprogramming parameters. Our work provides a new strategy and design space for fabricating smart reconfigurable structures and paves way for the design and development of bioinspired four-dimensional active matter for a broad range of applications in intelligent materials.
