RESUMO

Zero-dimensional metal halides have received wide attention due to their structural diversity, strong quantum confinement, and associated excellent photoluminescence properties. A reversible and tunable luminescence would be desirable for applications such as anti-counterfeiting, information encryption, and artificial intelligence. Yet, these materials are underexplored, with little known about their luminescence tuning mechanisms. Here we report a pyramidal coplanar dimer, (TBA)Sb2Cl7 (TBA = tetrabutylammonium), showing broadband emission wavelength tuning (585-650 nm) by simple thermal treatment. We attribute the broad color change to structural disorder induced by varying the heat treatment temperatures. Increasing the heating temperature transitions the material from long-range ordered crystalline phase to highly disordered glassy phase. The latter exhibits stronger electron-phonon coupling, enhancing the self-trapped exciton emission efficiency. The work provides a new material platform for manifold optical anti-counterfeiting applications and sheds light on the emission color tuning mechanisms for further design of stimuli-responsive materials.

RESUMO

One of the key goals of ecology is to understand how communities are assembled. The species co-existence theory suggests that community ß-diversity is influenced by species pool and community assembly processes, such as environmental filtering, dispersal events, ecological drift and biotic interactions. However, it remains unclear whether there are similar ß-diversity patterns among different soil microbial groups and whether all these mechanisms play significant roles in mediating ß-diversity patterns. By conducting a broad survey across Chinese deserts, we aimed to address these questions by investing biological soil crusts (biocrusts). Through amplicon-sequencing, we acquired ß-diversity data for multiple microbial groups, that is, soil total bacteria, diazotrophs, phoD-harbouring taxa, and fungi. Our results have shown varying distance decay rates of ß-diversity across microbial groups, with soil total bacteria showing a weaker distance-decay relationship than other groups. The impact of the species pool on community ß-diversity varied across microbial groups, with soil total bacteria and diazotrophs being significantly influenced. While the contributions of specific assembly processes to community ß-diversity patterns varied among different microbial groups, significant effects of local community assembly processes on ß-diversity patterns were consistently observed across all groups. Homogenous selection and dispersal limitation emerged as crucial processes for all groups. Precipitation and soil C:P were the key factors mediating ß-diversity for all groups. This study has substantially advanced our understanding of how the communities of multiple microbial groups are structured in desert biocrust systems.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To analyze the value of ultrasonography in predicting metachronous contralateral inguinal hernia (MCIH) and diagnosing contralateral persistent processus vaginalis (CPPV) in children with unilateral inguinal hernia, a prospective study was conducted. METHODS: All participants underwent a preoperative ultrasound on the contralateral groin. Patients in group A1 received operating procedure according to ultrasound results (patients with negative contralateral US results received hernia repair on the affected side), and patients in group A2 received operation according to laparoscopic results (patients received hernia repair and CPPV ligation). All patients were followed up 2 years and compared to a historical control (group B) who underwent open hernia repair only on the affected side regardless of contralateral US results. RESULTS: In groups A1 and A2, laparoscopic exploration revealed the presence of a CPPV in 490 cases. Ultrasound was found to be accurate in 104 out of the 490 cases with four false-positive and 386 false-negative results. This yielded an accuracy of 59.3%, a sensitivity of 21.2%, and a specificity of 99.2%. 10 patients in group A1, and 74 patients in group B developed MCIH. The accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of the value of ultrasonography in predicting MCIH were 89.3%, 52.4%, and 92.5%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative ultrasonography of the contralateral groin is currently unable to accurately detect CPPV, but it appears to be a promising method in predicting MCIH by using rigorous diagnosing criteria.

RESUMO

Polysaccharides extracted from Taxus media hrough an aqueous method were further refined by removing proteins via the Sevag technique and purified by dialysis. The separation of these polysaccharides was accomplished using a DEAE-cellulose chromatog-raphy column, yielding two distinct fractions, named CPTM-P1 and CPTM-P2. Notably, CPTM-P1 emerged as the primary polysaccharide component within Taxus media. Consequently, a comprehensive analysis focusing exclusively on CPTM-P1 was undertaken. The molecular weight of CPTM-P1 was established through gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and its monosaccharide composition was deciphered using HPLC-MS. The structure was further elucidated through nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The molecular weight of CPTM-P1 was determined to be 968.7 kDa. The monosaccharide composition consisted of galactose (Gal), arabinose (Ara), galacturonic acid (Gal-UA), glucose (Glc), rhamnose (Rha), xylose (Xyl), mannose (Man), fucose (Fuc), glucuronic acid (Glc-UA), and ribose (Rib). The proportional distribution of these components was 30.53%, 22.00%, 5.63%, 11.67%, 11.93%, 1.69%, 8.50%, 1.23%, 5.63%, and 1.17%, respectively. This confirmed CPTM-P1 as an acidic heteropolysaccharide with a glycuronic acid backbone. Moreover, CPTM-P1 showed immunoenhancing properties, effectively augmenting the secretion of nitric oxide and cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1ß, and IL-6). Additionally, it significantly enhances the phagocytic capacity of RAW264.7 cells. These findings underscore the potential application of these polysaccharides in functional foods and pharmaceuticals, providing a solid scientific basis for further exploration and utilization of Taxus media polysaccharides.

RESUMO

Nanmu (Phoebe zhennan) has a unique fragrance and is a high-quality tree species for forest conservation. The types and contents of volatile compounds in different tissues of nanmu wood are different, and the study of its volatile metabolites can help us to understand the source of its fragrance and functions. In order to explore the metabolites related to the wood fragrance of nanmu and to find out the unique volatile substances in the heartwood, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was performed to analyze the non-targeted metabolomics in five radial tissues from the sapwood to the heartwood of nanmu. A total of 53 volatile metabolites belonging to 11 classes were detected in all tissues, including terpenes, aromatic hydrocarbons, organoheterocyclics, phenols, esters, organic acids, alcohols, alkaloids, alkane, indoles derivatives, and others. And most of the volatile metabolites were identified for the first time in nanmu wood. Among them, terpenes and aromatic hydrocarbons were the main volatile components. In addition, 22 differential metabolites were screened from HW and SW, HW, and TZ via metabolomic analysis. Among these DAMs, three volatile metabolites (cadinene, a sesquiterpenoid; p-cymene, a monoterpenoid; 1,3,5-triisopropylbenzene, an aromatic hydrocarbon) contributed heavily to the characteristic fragrance of the heartwood. Additionally, the expression of transcripts showed that the unigenes in the terpenoid biosynthesis pathway were especially up-regulated in the SW. Therefore, we speculated that fragrance-related metabolites were synthesized in SW and then deposited in heartwood during sapwood transformed to heartwood. The expression levels of transcription factors (e.g., WRKY, C2H2, NAC) acted as the major regulatory factors in the synthesis of terpenoid. The results lay the foundations for further studies on the formation mechanism of fragrance components in nanmu wood and also provide a reference for the further development and utilization of nanmu wood.

RESUMO

Background and Objectives: To screen key miRNAs and their target genes related to Toll-like receptor (TLR) activation in gastric cancer (GC) cells and analyze them bioinformatically. Materials and Methods: Venn diagrams were obtained to screen miRNAs that were upregulated/downregulated in both GSE54129 and GSE164174. The miRTarBase database was used to predict the target genes of upregulated miRNAs. The differentially expressed genes in the regulatory network were analyzed. miR-16-5p expression in different tissue samples and the variations in the methylation states of four hub genes were measured. Results: We found that GSE54129 included 21 normal gastric tissues and 111 gastric cancer tissues, GSE164174 included 1417 normal gastric tissues and 1423 gastric cancer tissues. Venn diagram analysis results showed that compared with the control group, a total of 68 DEmiRNAs were upregulated in the GSE54129 and GSE164174 datasets, and no common downregulated DEmiRNAs were found. On further analysis of the GSE108345 dataset, we obtained the competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network associated with the activation of TLRs, and listed the top 10 lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA networks, including 10 miRNAs, 86 mRNA and 134 lncRNAs. Cytological HuBBA scores yielded a total of 1 miRNA, 16 mRNAs and 45 lncRNAs, of which miR-16-5p scored the highest as it was considered a key miRNA for TLR activation in GC cells, which are important in response against microorganisms. The results of Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis showed that endocytosis, microRNAs in cancer and the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway are related to TLR signaling. The results of in vivo experiments indicated that miR-16-5p was highly expressed in gastric cancer cells and tissues. Conclusions: Hsa-miR-16-5p's target genes mainly play a role by regulating the expression of four genes-MCL1, AP2B1, LAMB1, and RAB11FIP2. The findings provide a scientific basis for the development of immunotherapy for GC.

RESUMO

Platelet hyperactivity is essential for thrombus formation in coronary artery diseases (CAD). Dysfunction of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) in patients with cystic fibrosis elevates intracellular Cl- levels ([Cl-]i) and enhanced platelet hyperactivity. In this study, we explored whether alteration of [Cl-]i has a pathological role in regulating platelet hyperactivity and arterial thrombosis formation. CFTR expression was significantly decreased, while [Cl-]i was increased in platelets from CAD patients. In a FeCl3-induced mouse mesenteric arteriole thrombosis model, platelet-specific Cftr-knockout and/or pre-administration of ion channel inhibitor CFTRinh-172 increased platelet [Cl-]i, which accelerated thrombus formation, enhanced platelet aggregation and ATP release, and increased P2Y12 and PAR4 expression in platelets. Conversely, Cftr-overexpressing platelets resulted in subnormal [Cl-]i, thereby decreasing thrombosis formation. Our results showed that clamping [Cl-]i at high levels or Cftr deficiency-induced [Cl-]i increasement dramatically augmented phosphorylation (Ser422) of serum and glucocorticoid-regulated kinase (SGK1), subsequently upregulated P2Y12 and PAR4 expression via NF-κB signaling. Constitutively active mutant S422D SGK1 markedly increased P2Y12 and PAR4 expression. The specific SGK1 inhibitor GSK-650394 decreased platelet aggregation in wildtype and platelet-specific Cftr knockout mice, and platelet SGK1 phosphorylation was observed in line with increased [Cl-]i and decreased CFTR expression in CAD patients. Co-transfection of S422D SGK1 and adenovirus-induced CFTR overexpression in MEG-01 cells restored platelet activation signaling cascade. Our results suggest that [Cl-]i is a novel positive regulator of platelet activation and arterial thrombus formation via the activation of a [Cl-]i-sensitive SGK1 signaling pathway. Therefore, [Cl-]i in platelets is a novel potential biomarker for platelet hyperactivity, and CFTR may be a potential therapeutic target for platelet activation in CAD.

RESUMO

Moiré superlattices (MSLs) formed in van der Waals materials have become a promising platform to realize novel two-dimensional electronic states. Angle-aligned trilayer structures can form two sets of MSLs which could potentially interfere. In this work, we directly image the moiré patterns in both monolayer and twisted bilayer graphene aligned on hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), using combined scanning microwave impedance microscopy and conductive atomic force microscopy. Correlation of the two techniques reveals the contrast mechanism for the achieved ultrahigh spatial resolution (<2 nm). We observe two sets of MSLs with different periodicities in the trilayer stack. The smaller MSL breaks the 6-fold rotational symmetry and exhibits abrupt discontinuities at the boundaries of the larger MSL. Using a rigid atomic-stacking model, we demonstrate that the hBN layer considerably modifies the MSL of twisted bilayer graphene. We further analyze its effect on the reciprocal space spectrum of the dual-moiré system.

RESUMO

MnBi2Te4, a van der Waals magnet, is an emergent platform for exploring Chern insulator physics. Its layered antiferromagnetic order was predicted to enable even-odd layer number dependent topological states. Furthermore, it becomes a Chern insulator when all spins are aligned by an applied magnetic field. However, the evolution of the bulk electronic structure as the magnetic state is continuously tuned and its dependence on layer number remains unexplored. Here, employing multimodal probes, we establish one-to-one correspondence between bulk electronic structure, magnetic state, topological order, and layer thickness in atomically thin MnBi2Te4 devices. As the magnetic state is tuned through the canted magnetic phase, we observe a band crossing, i.e., the closing and reopening of the bulk band gap, corresponding to the concurrent topological phase transition in both even- and odd-layer-number devices. Our findings shed new light on the interplay between band topology and magnetic order in this newly discovered topological magnet.

RESUMO

Phoebe hui is an extremely valuable tree that is the main source of the fragrant golden-thread nanmu wood. Although the fragrance of wood has been investigated in several trees, the potential substances and gene regulation mechanisms that are involved in fragrance formation are poorly understood. Here, three radial tissues, sapwood (SW), heartwood (HW), and the transition zone (TZ) in between them, were compared via integrative physiological, volatile-metabolomic, and transcriptomic analyses to identify the key metabolites and regulatory mechanisms involved in fragrance formation. During heartwood formation, gradual starch grain loss was accompanied by the deposition of lipids and extractives in the cell lumen. Extracts of terpenoids were synthesized and accumulated in the heartwood, including monoterpenoids (limonene and p-cymene) and sesquiterpenes (cubebene and guaiadiene); these were identified as being closely related to the special fragrance of the wood. Additionally, the expression of transcripts showed that the genes related to primary metabolism were specifically upregulated in the SW, whereas genes annotated in terpenoid biosynthesis were specifically upregulated in the HW. Therefore, we speculated that terpenoid biosynthesis occurs in situ in the HW via the HW formation model of Type-III (Santalum) using the precursors that were produced by primary metabolism in the SW. The expression levels of transcription factors (e.g., MYB, WRKY, and C2H2) acted as the major regulatory factors in the synthesis of terpenoids. Our results explain the special fragrance in P. hui and broaden the current knowledge of the regulatory mechanisms of fragrance formation. This work provides a framework for future research that is focused on improving wood quality and value.

RESUMO

It has been confirmed that the plant-specific Teosinte-branched 1/Cycloidea/Proliferating (TCP) gene family plays a pivotal role during plant growth and development. M. candidum is a native ornamental species and has a wide range of pharmacodynamic effects. However, there is still a lack of research on TCP's role in controlling M. candidum's development, abiotic stress responses and hormone metabolism. A comprehensive description of the TCP gene family in M. candidum is urgently needed. In this study, we used the HMMER search method in conjunction with the BLASTp method to identify the members of the TCP gene family, and a total of 35 TCP genes were identified. A domain analysis further confirmed that all 35 TCPs contained a TCP superfamily, a characteristic involved in dimerization and DNA binding that can be found in most genes from this gene family, suggesting that our identification was effective. As a result of the domain conservation analysis, the 35 TCP genes could be classified into two classes, TCP-P and TCP-C, based on the conservative regions of 55 and 59 amino acids, respectively. Gene-duplication analysis revealed that most TCP genes were present in duplication events that eventually led to TCP gene expansion in M. candidum. All the detected gene pairs had a Ka/Ks value of less than one, suggesting that purification selection is the most important factor that influences the evolution of TCP genes. Phylogenetic analysis of three species displayed the evolutionary relationship of TCP genes across different species and further confirmed our results. The real-time quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR) results showed that McTCP2a, McTCP7a, McTCP10, McTCP11, McTCP12a, McTCP13, McTCP16, McTCP17, McTCP18, McTCP20 and McTCP21 may be involved in leaf development; McTCP4a, McTCP1, McTCP14, McTCP17, McTCP18, McTCP20, McTCP22 and McTCP24 may be involved in flower development; and McTCP2a, McTCP3, McTCP5a, McTCP6, McTCP7a, McTCP9, McTCP11, McTCP14 and McTCP16 may be involved in seed development. Our results dissect the TCP gene family across the genome of M. candidum and provide valuable information for exploring TCP genes to promote molecular breeding and property improvement of M. candidum in the future.

RESUMO

Silica gel, octadecyl-silica(ODS), Sephadex LH-20, and semi-preparative high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) was performed to isolate nine cephalotaxine-type alkaloids from Cephalotaxus sinensis: 8-oxodeoxyharringtonine(1), 8-oxonordeoxyharringtonine(2), cephafortunine A(3), 8-oxocephalotaxine(4), deoxyharringtonine(5), acetylcephalotaxine(6), cephalotaxine(7), epicephalotaxine(8), and cephalotaxinone(9). Compounds 1 and 2 were identified for the first time and their structures were determined by high-resolution-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry(HR-ESI-MS), nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR), and electronic circular dichroism(ECD). Compounds 1-3 and 5 significantly inhibited the transcription of nuclear factor kappa B(NF-κB), with the half-maximal inhibitory concentration(IC_(50)) of(3.91±0.70),(2.99±0.45),(7.84±0.51), and(1.46±0.17) µmol·L~(-1), respectively.

RESUMO

Impurity pinning has long been discussed to have a profound effect on the dynamics of an incommensurate charge density wave (CDW), which would otherwise slide through the lattice without resistance. Here, we visualize the impurity pinning evolution of the CDW in ZrTe_{3} using the variable temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. At low temperatures, we observe a quasi-1D incommensurate CDW modulation moderately correlated to the impurity positions, indicating a weak impurity pinning. As we raise the sample temperature, the CDW modulation gets progressively weakened and distorted, while the correlation with the impurities becomes stronger. Above the CDW transition temperature, short-range modulations persist with the phase almost all pinned by impurities. The evolution from weak to strong impurity pinning through the CDW transition can be understood as a result of losing phase rigidity.

RESUMO

This article describes the full details of our synthetic efforts toward the enantioselective total synthesis of the complex alkaloid methoxystemofoline. The enantioselective construction of the tetracyclic core features: (1) the Keck allylation at the N-α bridgehead carbon to forge the tetrasubstituted stereocenter; (2) an olefin cross-metathesis reaction for the side-chain elongation that is amenable for the synthesis of congeners and analogues; and (3) a regioselective aldol addition reaction with methyl pyruvate that ensured the subsequent regioselective cyclization reaction to construct the fourth ring. Overman's method was employed to install the 5-(alkoxyalky1idene)-3-methyl-tetronate moiety. In the last step, a nonstereoselective reaction resulted in the formation of both the proposed structure of methoxystemofoline and its E-stereoisomer, the natural product (revised structure), in a 1:1 ratio. We suggest to rename the natural product as isomethoxystemofoline, and report for the first time the complete 1H NMR data for this natural product.

RESUMO

We report a two-step approach to bicyclic and monocyclic 5-(1-alkoxyalkylidene)tetronates starting from lactones/esters. The method features the use of thionolactones and thionoesters as activated forms of lactones/esters that allows the direct condensation with tetronates via one-pot enolate formation, nucleophilic addition, S-methylation, and DBU-promoted elimination. The value of the method was demonstrated by the stereoselective syntheses of two natural products: 5,6-Z-fadyenolide (Z/E ratio = 6:1) and 9,10-methylenedioxy-5,6-Z-fadyenolide (Z/E ratio = 9:1).

RESUMO

The magnetic properties in two-dimensional van der Waals materials depend sensitively on structure. CrI3, as an example, has been recently demonstrated to exhibit distinct magnetic properties depending on the layer thickness and stacking order. Bulk CrI3 is ferromagnetic (FM) with a Curie temperature of 61 K and a rhombohedral layer stacking, whereas few-layer CrI3 has a layered antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase with a lower ordering temperature of 45 K and a monoclinic stacking. In this work, we use cryogenic magnetic force microscopy to investigate CrI3 flakes in the intermediate thickness range (25-200 nm) and find that the two types of magnetic orders, hence the stacking orders, can coexist in the same flake with a layer of ∼13 nm at each surface being in the layered AFM phase similar to few-layer CrI3 and the rest in the bulk FM phase. The switching of the bulk moment proceeds through a remnant state with nearly compensated magnetic moment along the c-axis, indicating formation of c-axis domains allowed by a weak interlayer coupling strength in the rhombohedral phase. Our results provide a comprehensive picture on the magnetism in CrI3 and point to the possibility of engineering magnetic heterostructures within the same material.

RESUMO

High-throughput single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) has advantages over traditional RNA-seq to explore spatiotemporal information on gene dynamic expressions in heterogenous tissues. We performed Drop-seq, a method for the dropwise sequestration of single cells for sequencing, on protoplasts from the differentiating xylem of Populus alba × Populus glandulosa. The scRNA-seq profiled 9,798 cells, which were grouped into 12 clusters. Through characterization of differentially expressed genes in each cluster and RNA in situ hybridizations, we identified vessel cells, fiber cells, ray parenchyma cells and xylem precursor cells. Diffusion pseudotime analyses revealed the differentiating trajectory of vessels, fiber cells and ray parenchyma cells and indicated a different differentiation process between vessels and fiber cells, and a similar differentiation process between fiber cells and ray parenchyma cells. We identified marker genes for each cell type (cluster) and key candidate regulators during developmental stages of xylem cell differentiation. Our study generates a high-resolution expression atlas of wood formation at the single cell level and provides valuable information on wood formation.

RESUMO

The efficacy and safety of adjunctive nonconvulsive electrotherapy (NET) for patients with depression are undetermined. This systematic review was conducted to examine the efficacy and safety of adjunctive NET for patients with depression. Chinese (WanFang and Chinese Journal Net) and English (PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO and the Cochrane Library) databases were systematically searched from their inception until Jan 27, 2021 by three independent investigators. One randomized controlled trial (RCT) with 3 treatment arms (n = 108) and two observational studies (single-group, before-after design, n = 31) were included. In the RCT, the antidepressant efficacy of NET on depression was similar to that of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) (P > 0.05) but with significantly fewer neurocognitive impairments as measured by the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) (P < 0.05). In two observational studies, the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17) scores decreased significantly from baseline to post-NET (all Ps < 0.05), without adverse neurocognitive effects. In the RCT, adverse drug reactions (ADRs) were not separately reported among the 3 treatment arms but a similar rate of discontinuation was reported. The currently available limited evidence from 3 studies suggests that NET as an adjunctive treatment may be a safe, well-tolerated, effective therapy for depression without serious neurocognitive impairments.

RESUMO

Nonconvulsive electrotherapy (NET) defined as electrical brain stimulation administered like standard electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), but below seizure threshold, could be effective for patients with treatment-refractory depression (TRD) with fewer adverse neurocognitive outcomes. However, there is a lack of studies in Chinese patients with TRD. Thus, this study was conducted to examine the efficacy and safety of adjunctive NET for Chinese patients with TRD. Twenty TRD patients were enrolled and underwent six NET treatments. Depressive symptoms, response, and remission were assessed with the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17) at baseline and after 1, 3, and 6 NET treatments. Neurocognitive function was assessed by the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) at baseline and after the completion of six NET treatments. Mean HAMD-17 scores declined significantly from 26.2 to 10.4 (p < 0.001) after post-NET. The rates of response and remission were 60.0% (95% CI: 36.5-83.5) and 10.0% (95% CI: 0-24.4), respectively. Neurocognitive performance improved following a course of NET. No significant association was found between changes in depressive symptoms and baseline neurocognitive function. Adjunctive NET appeared to be effective for patients with TRD, without adverse neurocognitive effects. Randomized controlled studies were warranted to confirm these findings.

RESUMO

In 2013, China's first Mental Health Law (MHL) took effect, with the goal of better protecting patients' rights. Under the law the police, with appropriate training, rather than family members, employers or medical staff sent from a hospital, are the ones who bring persons in behavioral crises to medical facilities for psychiatric assessment for possible involuntary hospitalization. We examined the proportion and distinctive characteristics of persons brought to psychiatric emergency services (PES) by the police since the implementation of MHL. We used medical records to document demographic and clinical characteristics of all persons evaluated at the PES of the Guangzhou Psychiatric Hospital, the largest psychiatric hospital in China's fourth largest city, from April 2017 to August 2017. Bivariate and multivariate statistical analyses were performed to identify characteristics of patients brought to the PES by the police. Among 1515 PES visits, 166 (11.0%) were brought by the police as compared to virtually none in the years before the law took effect. Compared to non-police referrals, police referrals were associated with male gender, age greater than 30, more documented violent behavior, greater likelihood of having been restrained, and higher rates of hospital admission after assessment. Assessed risk of suicidality and diagnoses of substance use disorder were not significantly associated with police referral. A modest but increased and noteworthy proportion of patients evaluated at the PES after implementations of China's MHL were brought by the police, especially those with violent behavior requiring restraint and hospitalization resulting from mental illness.
