RESUMO

A large-scale outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) occurred in Shanghai, China, in early December 2022. To study the incidence and characteristics of otitis media with effusion (OME) complicating SARS-CoV-2, we collected 267 middle ear effusion (MEE) samples and 172 nasopharyngeal (NP) swabs from patients. The SARS-CoV-2 virus was detected by RT-PCR targeting. The SARS-CoV-2 virus, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), and transmembrane serine protease 2 (TMPRSS2) expression in human samples was examined via immunofluorescence. During the COVID-19 epidemic in 2022, the incidence of OME (3%) significantly increased compared to the same period from 2020 to 2022. Ear symptoms in patients with SARS-CoV-2 complicated by OME generally appeared late, even after a negative NP swab, an average of 9.33 ± 6.272 days after COVID-19 infection. The SARS-CoV-2 virus was detected in MEE, which had a higher viral load than NP swabs. The insertion rate of tympanostomy tubes was not significantly higher than in OME patients in 2019-2022. Virus migration led to high viral loads in MEE despite negative NP swabs, indicating that OME lagged behind respiratory infections but had a favorable prognosis. Furthermore, middle ear tissue from adult humans coexpressed the ACE2 receptor for the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the TMPRSS2 cofactors required for virus entry.

Terahertz (THz) microcavities have garnered considerable attention for their ability to localize and confine THz waves, allowing for strong coupling to remarkably enhance the light-matter interaction. These properties hold great promise for advancing THz science and technology, particularly for high-speed integrated THz chips where transient interaction between THz waves and matter is critical. However, experimental study of these transient time-domain processes requires high temporal and spatial resolution since these processes, such as THz strong coupling, occur in several picoseconds and microns. Thus, most literature studies rarely cover temporal and spatial processes at the same time. In this work, we thoroughly investigate the transient cavity-cavity strong-coupling phenomena at THz frequency and find a Rabi-like oscillation in the microcavities, manifested by direct observation of a periodic energy exchange process via a phase-contrast time-resolved imaging system. Our explanation, based on the Jaynes-Cummings model, provides theoretical insight into this transient strong-coupling process. This work provides an opportunity to deeply understand the transient strong-coupling process between THz microcavities, which sheds light on the potential of THz microcavities for high-speed THz sensor and THz chip design.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Gut-vascular barrier (GVB) dysfunction has been shown to be a prerequisite for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) development. However, the causes of GVB disruption and the underlying mechanisms are still elusive. Here, we explored whether and how Escherichia coli (E. coli) NF73-1, a pathogenic E. coli strain isolated from nonalcoholic steatohepatitis patients, contributes to NAFLD by modulating the GVB. METHODS: C57BL/6J mice were fed with high-fat diet (HFD) or normal diet in the presence or absence of E. coli NF73-1 for the indicated time periods. Intestinal barrier function and infiltration of immune cells were evaluated in these mice. Endothelial cells were exposed to E. coli NF73-1 for barrier integrity analysis. RESULTS: HFD-induced GVB disruption preceded the damage of intestinal epithelial barrier (IEB) as well as intestinal and hepatic inflammatory changes and can be reversed by vascular endothelial growth factor A blockade. Antibiotic treatment prevented mice from HFD-induced liver steatosis by restoration of the GVB. Notably, E. coli NF73-1 caused a more conspicuous damage of GVB than that of the IEB and contributed to NAFLD development. Mechanistically, E. coli NF73-1 dismantled the GVB by inhibiting the Wnt/ß-catenin signalling pathway. Activation of Wnt/ß-catenin improved the GVB and impeded the translocation of E. coli NF73-1 into the liver in vitro and in vivo. CONCLUSIONS: E. coli NF73-1 disrupts GVB and aggravates NAFLD via inhibiting the Wnt/ß-catenin signalling pathway. Targeting E. coli NF73-1 or selectively enhancing the GVB may act as potential avenues for the prevention and treatment of NAFLD.

Herein, a chemiluminescence (CL) biosensor based on CRISPR-Cas12a and cation exchange reaction was constructed to detect the biomarker microRNA-21 (miRNA-21). The rolling circle amplification (RCA) reaction was introduced to convert each target RNA strand into a long single-stranded DNA with repeated sequences, which acted as triggers to initiate the transcleavage activity of CRISPR-Cas12a. The activated Cas12a could cleave the biotinylated linker DNA of CuS nanoparticles (NPs) to inhibit the binding of CuS NPs to streptavidin immobilized on the surface of the microplate, which strongly reduced the generation of Cu2+ from a cation exchange between CuS NPs and AgNO3, and thus efficiently suppressed the CL of Cu2+-luminol-H2O2 system, giving a "signal off" biosensor. With the multiple amplification, the detection limit of the developed sensor for miRNA-21 reached 16 aM. In addition, this biosensor is not only suitable for a professional chemiluminescence instrument but also for a smartphone used as a detection tool for the purpose of portable and low-cost assay. This method could be used to specifically detect quite a low level of miRNA-21 in human serum samples and various cancer cells, indicating its potential in ultrasensitive molecular diagnostics.

Tunable terahertz (THz) microcavities are crucial for the compact on-chip THz devices, aiming to future cloud-based computing, and artificial-intelligence technologies. However, the solutions to effectively modulate THz microcavities remain elusive. Strong coupling has been widely demonstrated in many configurations at different ambient conditions to date and may serve as a promising tool to modulate THz microcavities. Here, we schematically design a microcavity-plasmon hybrid system, and propose an effective approach to modulating the resonant frequencies of THz microcavities by the microcavity-resonator strong coupling. In this case, we observed the strongly coupling states, where the resultant two-polariton branches exhibit an anti-crossing splitting in the frequency domain, experimentally exhibiting a ∼6.2% frequency modulation to the microcavity compared to the uncoupled case. This work provides an efficient approach to modulating chip-scale THz microcavities, thereby facilitating the development and application of compact THz integrated devices, further empowering the evolution of future information processing and intelligent computing system.

BACKGROUND: The criteria for surgical intervention after non-curative endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) of early gastric cancer are unclear. We aimed to clarify the risk factors for residual cancer and lymph node metastasis after non-curative ESD and to identify recommendations for additional surgery. METHODS: We collected data on 133 consecutive patients who underwent additional surgery after non-curative ESD of early gastric cancer at Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital from January 2013 to July 2022. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to seek risk factors of residual cancer and lymph node metastasis. RESULTS: The incidence rates of residual cancer and lymph node metastasis were 13.5% (18/133) and 10.5% (14/133), respectively. There was neither residual tumor nor lymph node metastasis in 104 (78.2%) cases. Multivariate analyses elucidated that horizontal margin was an independent risk factor for local residual cancer, whereas lymphatic infiltration was an independent risk factor for lymph node metastasis. Patients with mixed histological types were more likely to suffer lymph node metastasis and further undergo additional surgery after non-curative ESD than pure histological type. CONCLUSIONS: Additional gastrectomy with lymph node dissection was strongly recommended in patients with lymphatic infiltration after non-curative ESD of early gastric cancer. Patients with mixed histological type have a high propensity for lymph node metastasis and should be treated as a separate subtype.

BACKGROUND: Clinically, a large part of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients is complicated by oral lesions. Although previous studies proved oral microbial dysbiosis in IBD patients, the bacterial community in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of those IBD patients combined with oral ulcers has not been profiled yet. METHODS: In this study, we enrolled four groups of subjects, including healthy controls (CON), oral ulcer patients (OU), and ulcerative colitis patients with (UC_OU) and without (UC) oral ulcers. Bio-samples from three GI niches containing salivary, buccal, and fecal samples, were collected for 16S rRNA V3-V4 region sequencing. Bacterial abundance and related bio-functions were compared, and data showed that the fecal microbiota was more potent than salivary and buccal microbes in shaping the host immune system. ~ 22 UC and 10 UC_OU 5-aminosalicylate (5-ASA) routine treated patients were followed-up for six months; according to their treatment response (a decrease in the endoscopic Mayo score), they were further sub-grouped as responding and non-responding patients. RESULTS: We found those UC patients complicated with oral ulcers presented weaker treatment response, and three oral bacterial genera, i.e., Fusobacterium, Oribacterium, and Campylobacter, might be connected with treatment responding. Additionally, the salivary microbiome could be an indicator of treatment responding in 5-ASA routine treatment rather than buccal or fecal ones. CONCLUSIONS: The fecal microbiota had a strong effect on the host's immune indices, while the oral bacterial microbiota could help stratification for ulcerative colitis patients with oral ulcers. Additionally, the oral microbiota had the potential role in reflecting the treatment response of UC patients. Three oral bacteria genera (Fusobacterium, Oribacterium, and Campylobacter) might be involved in UC patients with oral ulcers lacking treatment responses, and monitoring oral microbiota may be meaningful in assessing the therapeutic response in UC patients.

PURPOSE: To assess awareness and recognition of vestibular function tests in otorhinolaryngology medical staffs, especially the vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP) testing in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). METHODS: A survey was delivered via either email or a social media app. The medical staffs of the Chinese Medical Association of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery from various branches were enrolled. Study data were collected and managed with an online data collection tool. RESULTS: A total of 1781 emails and 623 social media messages were sent to 2404 otorhinolaryngology medical staffs. One hundred and fifty-seven of them participated in the survey, including 24 via emails and 133 via the social media app. Regarding the knowledge of VEMP, only 59 (37.6%) of them agreed that OSA could be related to vertigo/dizziness/imbalance and 28 (17.8%) believed that OSA could result in VEMP abnormalities and would factor this in diagnosing the impairment of the vestibular function of OSA patients. A total of 7.6% of the respondents had never heard of the VEMP tests. Responses regarding the minimum age at which VEMP are possible ranged from younger than 6 months to greater than 18 years of age. Beliefs regarding the utility and reliability of VEMP varied, with 'unsure' being the most frequent response. In addition, only 17.8% of otolaryngologists indicated some access to the VEMP test. CONCLUSIONS: Knowledge and beliefs about the role of VEMP in diagnosing otolithic organ dysfunction caused by OSA in otorhinolaryngology vary widely. It is important for otorhinolaryngology medical staffs to learn the latest literatures and updated knowledge through continuing education.

As part of the inner ear, the vestibular system is responsible for sense of balance, which consists of three semicircular canals, the utricle, and the saccule. Increasing evidence has indicated that the noncanonical Wnt/PCP signaling pathway plays a significant role in the development of the polarity of the inner ear. However, the role of canonical Wnt signaling in the polarity of the vestibule is still not completely clear. In this study, we found that canonical Wnt pathway-related genes are expressed in the early stage of development of the utricle and change dynamically. We conditionally knocked out ß-catenin, a canonical Wnt signaling core protein, and found that the cilia orientation of hair cells was disordered with reduced number of hair cells in the utricle. Moreover, regulating the canonical Wnt pathway (Licl and IWP2) in vitro also affected hair cell polarity and indicated that Axin2 may be important in this process. In conclusion, our results not only confirm that the regulation of canonical Wnt signaling affects the number of hair cells in the utricle but also provide evidence for its role in polarity development.

OBJECTIVE: To assess any differences in spatial listening ability of cochlear implant recipients when using both or only one of two bilateral cochlear implants (BCIs) for stimuli originating from behind the subject. DESIGN: Twelve loudspeakers were placed in the rear horizontal plane of the subjects to test the sound localisation performance of BCI users and normal-hearing listeners (NHLs) with or without interfering noise. Stimuli were presented via two rear loudspeakers simultaneously during the speech recognition test. In the tone recognition test, another anechoic chamber was used with stimuli presenting from a loudspeaker behind the participants. STUDY SAMPLE: Twenty-seven NHLs and eleven BCI users. RESULTS: Average root-mean-square (RMS) error for the bilateral condition was significantly lower than that for the right and left cochlear implant (CI) conditions with or without interfering noises (p < 0.05). Average speech or tone recognition scores for the bilateral condition and the right and left CI conditions were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Sound localisation with BCIs was significantly more accurate than with either implant alone. Speech and tone recognition scores were not better with two compared to those of one activated implant. Given the small number of subjects, the results should be considered as preliminary.

INTRODUCTION: Triaging patients into correct severity categories in an emergency department is an advanced skill that depends on a quick assessment after obtaining very little information. The purpose of this study was to assess specific risk factors associated with hospital admissions in the emergency department environment of the specialized Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat hospital located in Shanghai, China. METHODS: This study was a retrospective cohort study. Patients visiting the emergency department in a tertiary hospital in eastern China from February 2008 to August 2015 were included. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to identify the risk factors related to hospital admissions. Combining variables calculated from the regression equation of multivariate analysis (binary logistic regression analysis) enabled the risk factors quantification. The receiver operating characteristic analysis was used to identify the most informative cutoff point of the combining predictors. RESULTS: A total of 188715 patients were enrolled in the study. Of them, 8395 patients (4.4%) required hospital admission. Hour of visit, season, age, sex, chief complaint, anatomical location, and locale of patients were independent risk factors of hospital admission by univariate and multivariate analysis. Combining predictors were calculated from the equation of the multivariate logistic model. The area under the curve of the combining predictors was 0.949, and the 95% confidence interval was 0.947 to 0.951 (P <.001), with a sensitivity of 95.2% and a specificity of 85.6%. A cutoff score of less than -35.1975 was associated with hospital admission. DISCUSSION: This study provided a method to build a feasible predictive model of hospital admission during triage. Understanding risk factors is an important part of the triage process in order to correctly assign priorities to the patients served. The outcomes of this study would add additional information for the triage nurse to consider in assessing the patient and assigning acuity ratings. The model developed here requires validation in future research.

N-Linked glycans play important roles in various cellular and immunological events. Endo-ß-N-acetylglucosaminidase (ENGase) can release or transglycosylate N-glycans and is a promising tool for the chemoenzymatic synthesis of glycoproteins with homogeneously modified glycans. The ability of ENGases to act on core-fucosylated glycans is a key factor determining their therapeutic utility because mammalian N-glycans are frequently α-1,6-fucosylated. Although the biochemistries and structures of various ENGases have been studied extensively, the structural basis for the recognition of the core fucose and the asparagine-linked GlcNAc is unclear. Herein, we determined the crystal structures of a core fucose-specific ENGase from the caterpillar fungus Cordyceps militaris (Endo-CoM), which belongs to glycoside hydrolase family 18. Structures complexed with fucose-containing ligands were determined at 1.75-2.35 Å resolutions. The fucose moiety linked to GlcNAc is extensively recognized by protein residues in a round-shaped pocket, whereas the asparagine moiety linked to the GlcNAc is exposed to the solvent. The N-glycan-binding cleft of Endo-CoM is Y-shaped, and several lysine and arginine residues are present at its terminal regions. These structural features were consistent with the activity of Endo-CoM on fucose-containing glycans on rituximab (IgG) and its preference for a sialobiantennary substrate. Comparisons with other ENGases provided structural insights into their core fucose tolerance and specificity. In particular, Endo-F3, a known core fucose-specific ENGase, has a similar fucose-binding pocket, but the surrounding residues are not shared with Endo-CoM. Our study provides a foothold for protein engineering to develop enzymatic tools for the preparation of more effective therapeutic antibodies.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies reported that 5 ~ 32% COVID-19 patients were critically ill, a situation that poses great challenge for the management of the patients and ICU resources. We aim to identify independent risk factors to serve as prediction markers for critical illness of SARS-CoV-2 infection. METHODS: Fifty-two critical and 200 non-critical SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid positive patients hospitalized in 15 hospitals outside Wuhan from January 19 to March 6, 2020 were enrolled in this study. Multivariable logistic regression and LASSO logistic regression were performed to identify independent risk factors for critical illness. RESULTS: Age older than 60 years, dyspnea, respiratory rate > 24 breaths per min, leukocytosis > 9.5 × 109/L, neutrophilia > 6.3 × 109/L, lymphopenia < 1.1 × 109/L, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio > 3.53, fibrinogen > 4 g/L, d-dimer > 0.55 µg/mL, blood urea nitrogen > 7.1 mM, elevated aspartate transaminase, elevated alanine aminotransferase, total bilirubin > 21 µM, and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score ≥ 2 were identified as risk factors for critical illness. LASSO logistic regression identified the best combination of risk factors as SOFA score, age, dyspnea, and leukocytosis. The Area Under the Receiver-Operator Curve values for the risk factors in predicting critical illness were 0.921 for SOFA score, 0.776 for age, 0.764 for dyspnea, 0.658 for leukocytosis, and 0.960 for the combination of the four risk factors. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings advocate the use of risk factors SOFA score ≥ 2, age > 60, dyspnea and leukocytosis > 9.5 × 109/L on admission, alone or in combination, to determine the optimal management of the patients and health care resources.

Defective acoustic transmission in the cochlea is closely related with various auditory and vestibular symptoms. Among them, semicircular canal dehiscence (SCD) with a defective semicircular bone is typical. Currently, the pathogenesis of SCD is usually explained by the third window hypothesis; however, this hypothesis fails to explain the variability in the symptoms and signs experienced by superior SCD (SSCD) patients. We evaluated the mechanism of hearing loss in a guinea pig model of bony dehiscence with various sizes and locations along the superior semicircular canal. Auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) and laser Doppler velocimetry were used to measure hearing loss and vibration changes before and after fenestration, as well as after restorative patching. ABR thresholds at low frequencies (e.g., 1000 Hz) increased after fenestration and decreased back to the normal range after we repaired the defect. Energy leakage from the surgically introduced third window was detected in the range of 300-1500 Hz, accompanied by increased vibration at the umbo, stapes head, and the dehiscence site, while decreased vibration was observed at the round window membrane in the same frequency range. After the patching procedure, the deviant vibrations were recovered. The degree of postfenestration energy leakage was proportional to the size of fenestration and the proximity of the fenestration site to the oval window. These results suggest that the bony fenestration of the superior semicircular canal mimics the hearing loss pattern of patients with SSCD. The decrease in perilymph wave impedance likely accounts for the auditory changes.

OBJECTIVES: To establish an efficient method of chemoenzymatic modification for making N-linked oligosaccharide chains of glycoproteins structurally homogeneous, which crucially affects their bioactivities. RESULTS: Deglycosylated-RNase B (GlcNAc-RNase B; acceptor), sialylglyco (SG)-oxazoline (donor) and an N180H mutant of Coprinopsis cinerea endo-ß-N-acetylglucosaminidase (Endo-CCN180H) were employed. pH 7.5 was ideal for both SG-oxazoline's stability and Endo-CC's transglycosylation reaction. The most efficient reaction conditions for producing glycosylated-RNase B, virtually modified completely with sialo-biantennary-type complex oligosaccharide, were: 80 µg GlcNAc-RNase B, 200 µg SG-oxazoline and 3 µg Endo-CCN180H in 20 µl 20 mM Tris/HCl pH 7.5 at 30 °C for 30-60 min. CONCLUSIONS: This transglycosylation method using SG-oxazoline and Endo-CCN180H is beneficial for producing pharmaceutical glycoproteins modified with homogenous biantennary-complex-type oligosaccharides.

Methyl-CpG binding protein 2 (MeCP2) is a chromatin regulator highly expressed in mature neurons. Mutations of MECP2 gene cause >90% cases of Rett syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder featured by striking psychomotor dysfunction. In Mecp2-null mice, the motor deficits are associated with reduction of dopamine content in the striatum, the input nucleus of basal ganglia mostly composed of GABAergic neurons. Here we investigated the causal role of MeCP2 in modulation of striatal dopamine content and psychomotor function. We found that mice with selective removal of MeCP2 in forebrain GABAergic neurons, predominantly in the striatum, phenocopied Mecp2-null mice in dopamine deregulation and motor dysfunction. Selective expression of MeCP2 in the striatum preserved dopamine content and psychomotor function in both males and females. Notably, the dopamine deregulation was primarily confined to the rostral striatum, and focal deletion or reactivation of MeCP2 expression in the rostral striatum through adeno-associated virus effectively disrupted or restored dopamine content and locomotor activity, respectively. Together, these findings demonstrate that striatal MeCP2 maintains local dopamine content in a non-cell autonomous manner in the rostral striatum and that is critical for psychomotor control.

Thioredoxin (Trx) is a compact redox-regulatory protein that modulates cellular redox state by reducing oxidized proteins. Trx exhibits dual functionality as an antioxidant and a cofactor for diverse enzymes and transcription factors, thereby exerting influence over their activity and function. Trx has emerged as a pivotal biomarker for various diseases, particularly those associated with oxidative stress, inflammation, and aging. Recent clinical investigations have underscored the significance of Trx in disease diagnosis, treatment, and mechanistic elucidation. Despite its paramount importance, the intricate interplay between Trx and cellular senescence-a condition characterized by irreversible growth arrest induced by multiple aging stimuli-remains inadequately understood. In this review, our objective is to present a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the structure and function of Trx, its involvement in redox signaling pathways and cellular senescence, its association with aging and age-related diseases, as well as its potential as a therapeutic target. Our review aims to elucidate the novel and extensive role of Trx in senescence while highlighting its implications for aging and age-related diseases.

The poor clinical performance of titanium and its alloy implants is mainly attributed to their lack of antibacterial ability and poor osseointegration. The key and challenge lie in how to enhance their osteoinductivity while imparting antibacterial capability. In this study, a titanium oxide metasurface with light-responsive behavior was constructed on the surface of titanium alloy using an alkaline-acid bidirectional hydrothermal method. The effects of the acid type, acid concentration, hydrothermal time, hydrothermal temperature, and subsequent heat treatments on the optical behavior of the metasurface were systematically investigated with a focus on exploring the influence of the metasurface and photodynamic reaction on the osteogenic activity of osteoblasts. Results show that the type of acid and heat treatment significantly affect the light absorption of the titanium alloy surface, with HCl and post-heat-treatment favoring redshift in the light absorption. Under 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) irradiation for 10 min, in vitro antibacterial experiments demonstrate that the antibacterial rate of the metasurface titanium alloy against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were 96.87% and 99.27%, respectively. In vitro cell experiments demonstrate that the nanostructure facilitates cell adhesion, proliferation, differentiation, and expression of osteogenic-related genes. Surprisingly, the nanostructure promoted the expression of relevant osteogenic genes of MC3T3-E1 under 808 nm NIR irradiation. This study provides a method for the surface modification of titanium alloy implants.

Freshwater planarian flatworm possesses an extraordinary ability to regenerate lost body parts after amputation; it is perfect organism model in regeneration and stem cell biology. Recently, small RNAs have been an increasing concern and studied in many aspects, including regeneration and stem cell biology, among others. In the current study, the large-scale cloning and sequencing of sRNAs from the intact and regenerative planarian Dugesia japonica are reported. Sequence analysis shows that sRNAs between 18nt and 40nt are mainly microRNAs and piRNAs. In addition, 209 conserved miRNAs and 12 novel miRNAs are identified. Especially, a better screening target method, negative-correlation relationship of miRNAs and mRNA, is adopted to improve target prediction accuracy. Similar to miRNAs, a diverse population of piRNAs and changes in the two samples are also listed. The present study is the first to report on the important role of sRNAs during planarian Dugesia japonica regeneration.

OBJECTIVE: Acute tonsillitis is a common disease in otorhinolaryngology. Meteorological factors can affect the incidence of many infectious diseases. This study aims to analyze the correlation between acute tonsillitis and meteorological conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We collected the meteorological data, including daily temperature, humidity, and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) of Shanghai, China, from 2014 to 2015. The monthly number of acute tonsillitis cases in our hospital was also calculated and used as the outcome variable. The associations between them were evaluated, respectively. RESULTS: The average number of patients diagnosed with acute tonsillitis in our hospital per month was 68.67 ± 18.67 from 2014 to 2015. The average temperature, humidity, and PM2.5 of Shanghai during the defined period was 16.84 °C ± 7.80 °C, 75.93% ± 5.45%, and 52.38 ± 14.23 µg/m3, respectively. The temperature was significantly positively associated with the acute tonsillitis cases number both in Pearson correlation analysis (R = 0.423, P = .039) and in multivariate regression analysis (coefficient =2.194, P = .012). However, no correlation between the acute tonsillitis cases number and relative humidity or PM2.5 was found through a multivariate regression model (P = .225 and P = .243), respectively. CONCLUSION: The high temperature was associated with an increased incidence of acute tonsillitis.
