RESUMO

For decades, our understanding of water-metal bonding has been dominated by the frontier orbital principle in which globally stable water-metal interactions are ruled by HOMO interacting with metal surfaces. Using density functional theory calculations, herein, we have revealed that the frontier orbital principle cannot be applied to metastable water bonding on Pt(111), where the decisive role of HOMO is replaced by HOMO-1 in terms of the greatest orbital shifts and depopulations as the two different bonding indicators. Unlike the stable water configuration in which both HOMO-1 and HOMO prefer to overlap with metal states through σ-like orbital interactions, metastable configurations exhibit delicate competition or balance between σ-like and π-like orbital interactions exerted by HOMO-1 and HOMO, respectively. These findings have significantly deepened our understanding of orbital roles in water-metal bonding interactions and bridged the gap between theoretical understanding of electrified waters at electrochemical interfaces and water science on metal surfaces.

BACKGROUND: The frequent occurrence and increasing severity of major emerging infectious diseases (MEIDs) have posed considerable public health, economic and social issues worldwide. The emergency preparedness of public is inadequate to respond to and recover from MEIDs. Due to the limitation of time, space and resources, it is also difficult to carry out large-scale emergency preparedness training related to MEIDs. Then we developed a virtual interactive training system to improve emergency preparedness of public, including preparation of legal compliance, emergency knowledge, emergency capacity, economic estimation, material reserve and physical and mental health. METHODS: A protocol for conducting a randomized controlled trail to evaluate the People's War against Pandemic, a virtual interactive training system aimed to improve emergency preparedness of public for MEIDs. During the intervention, participants need to complete the storyline task at least once a day, watch at least one article and one video in the knowledge corner, and complete a retest of wrong choices in the intelligent evaluation module. The primary outcome is emergency preparedness of public for MEIDs. The secondary outcome is prevention and control knowledge of MEIDs. DISCUSSION: The People's War Against Pandemic may be an effective approach to provide public with a panoramic understanding of the response to MEIDs, so as to promote their comprehensive preparation and finally achieve effective response. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study was funded in 2021 and registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (registration number: ChiCTR2200060919) in June 2022. Recruitment and enrollment of participants began in July 2022.

We proposed a mechanism to induce strong magnetism of up to 10.92 emu g-1 in hexagonal-phase arsenene nanoribbon (AsNR) from the perspective of edge quantum entrapment. Consistency between bond-order-length-strength correlation (BOLS) theory and density functional theory (DFT) calculations verified that: (i) the edge bond contraction of 9.54% deepened the edge potential well of AsNR, (ii) a net charge of 0.06 e- transferred from the inner region to the edge; and (iii) the edge quantum well polarized the unpaired electron and the net spin (antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic depending on the width) is localized at the zigzag edge. The finding sheds a light on applications of AsNR in magnetic storage devices.

Micro RNAs play important roles during mammalian spermatogenesis, but the function(s) of specific miRNAs remain largely unknown. Here, we report that miR-100 is predominantly expressed in undifferentiated murine spermatogonia, including spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs). We utilized a miRNA mimic and inhibitor to knock down and overexpress miR-100 in cultured SSCs, respectively, finding that the miR-100 promotes the proliferation of SSCs in vitro. Furthermore, signals promoting SSC maintenance induced, whereas retinoic acid repressed, expression of miR-100. Stat3 expression was modulated by miR-100, with increased transcript and protein abundance in the presence of the miR-100 inhibitor versus reduced protein levels following miR-100 overexpression. Stat3 silencing also mimicked the reduced SSC proliferation phenotype associated with elevated miR-100 levels. Importantly, Stat3 silencing rescued the anti-proliferation capacity of miR-100 inhibitor on cultured SSCs. Given that the Stat3 3' untranslated region was not repressed by pre-miR-100 in a standard luciferase reporter assay, we suggest that miR-100 promotes SSC proliferation by indirect regulation of Stat3.

DFT and BOLS approximations were carried out to study the electronic and optical properties of different sizes of black phosphorus nanoribbons (PNRs) with either zigzag- or armchair-terminated edges. PNRs exhibit a nearly direct bandgap, the size of which is strongly increased because of quantum effects. Meanwhile, the bandgap energies of these two kinds of edge PNRs reveal an excellent size dependency. We reconcile the size-dependence of the bandgap energy shifts for PNRs with respect to stimulated bond relaxation, and quantification of the bond length, the bond strength, and the bond nature index. Our calculations suggest that atomic under-coordination shortens the length and increases the stiffness of the P-P bond, which widens the bandgap.

Although germanium performs amazingly well at sites surrounding hetero-coordinated impurities and under-coordinated defects or skins with unusual properties, having important impact on electronic and optical devices, understanding the behavior of the local bonds and electrons at such sites remains a great challenge. Here we show that a combination of density functional theory calculations, zone-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and bond order length strength correlation mechanism has enabled us to clarify the physical origin of the Ge 3d core-level shift for the under-coordinated (111) and (100) skin with and without hetero-coordinated H2 , O2 , H2 O, H2 O2 , HF impurities. The Ge 3d level shifts from 27.579 (for an isolated atom) by 1.381 to 28.960 eV upon bulk formation. Atomic under-coordination shifts the binding energy further to 29.823 eV for the (001) and to 29.713 eV for the (111) monolayer skin. Addition of O2 , HF, H2 O, H2 O2 and Au impurities results in quantum entrapment by different amounts, but H adsorption leads to polarization.

Water nanobubbles manifest fascinatingly higher mechanical strength, higher thermal stability, and longer lifetime than macroscopic bubbles; thus, they provide an important impact in applications in the biomedical and chemical industries. However, a detailed understanding of the mechanism behind these mysteries of nanobubbles remains a challenge. Consistency between quantum computations and Raman spectrometric measurements confirmed our predictions that a nanobubble skin shares the same supersolidity with molecular clusters, skins of bulk water, and water droplets because of molecular undercoordination (fewer than four nearest molecular neighbors). Molecular undercoordination (coordination number Zcluster < Zsurface < Zbubble < Zbulk = 4) shortens/extends the H-O/O:H bond and stiffens/softens its corresponding stretching phonons, whose frequency shift is proportional to the square root of the cohesive energy and inversely proportional to the segmental length. The strongly polarized O:H-O bond slows the molecular dynamics and increases the viscosity. The freezing temperature is lowered by the softened O:H bond, and the melting temperature is enhanced by the stiffened H-O bond. Therefore, the supersolid skin makes the nanobubbles thermally more stable, less dense, and stiffer and slows the dynamics of their molecular motion.

In situ Raman spectroscopy revealed that transiting H2O/NaX (∼64) solutions into an ice VI phase and then into an ice VII phase at a temperature of 298 K requires excessive pressures with respect to pure water. The increase of the critical pressures varies with the solute type in the Hofmeister series order: X = I > Br > Cl > F ∼ 0. The results suggest that the solute hydration creates electric fields that lengthen and soften the O:H nonbond and meanwhile shorten and stiffen the H-O bond through O-O Coulomb repulsion. Compression, however, does the opposite to solute electrification upon the O:H-O bond relaxation. Therefore, compression of the aqueous solutions recovers the electrification-deformed O:H-O bond first and then proceeds to the phase transitions, which requires excessive energy for the same sequence of phase transitions. Ice exclusion of solute disperses the frequencies of characteristic phonons and the critical pressures with unlikely new bond formation.

We examined the effects of atomic hetero- and under-coordination on the relaxation of the interatomic bonding and electronic binding energy of Li and LiNa cluster alloying using a combination of the bond-order-length-strength correlation and density functional theory calculations. We found that bond nature alteration by heterocoordination, bond relaxation by thermal excitation and atomic coordination contribute intrinsically to the core-level energy shifts with resolution of the binding energy at the atomic sites of terrace edges, facets, and bulk of the LiNa alloy nanoclusters. Our strategies may simplify the complexity of core electron binding energies in analyzing the experimental data of the irregularly coordinating atoms.

Objective To observe the effect and clinical efficacy of Qilin Pill (QP) combined met- formin on matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) , hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) , sex hormones, insulin resistance (IR) related indicators in polycystic ovaries induced infertility women. Methods Totally 58 polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) complicated infertility patients admitted to authors' hospital were serial numbered according to visit sequence. The odd num- bers were recruited as the control group, and the even numbers were recruited as the test group, 29 ca- ses in each group. Patients in the control group took Metformin Hydrochloride Tablets, while those in the test group additionally took QP. All patients received 3 months of treatment. After treatment serum con- tents of VEGF, MMP-9, HGF, sex hormones, IR related indicators, and clinical efficacy were detected in all patients. Results (1) There was no statistical difference in serum contents of MMP-9, VEGF, HGF, sex hormones [luteinizing hormone (LH) , testosterone (T) ] , or serum levels of fasting serum insulin (FINS) and insulin sensitive index (IS]) related indicators between the two groups before treatment (P> 0. 05) ; (2) Compared with before treatment in the same group, there was statistical difference in serum contents of MMP-9, VEGF, HGF, and levels of LH, T, FINS, ISI in the two groups after treatment (P < 0. 05) ; (3) Compared with the control group, patients' serum contents of MMP-9, VEGF, HGF,and levels of LH, T, FINS, ISI were lower in the test group after treatment (P <0. 05) ; (4) After treatment the ovulation rate (93.2%) and the pregnancy rate (48.3%) were higher in the test group than in the control group (P <0.05). Conclusion QP combined metformin could significantly reduce serum levels of LH. FINS and T, contents of VEGF, HGF, and MMP-9, improve IR, and elevate the ovulation rate and the pregnancy rate in PCOS induced infertility patients.

By using combination of bond-order-length-strength (BOLS) correlation, the tight-binding (TB) approach, and zone-selective photoelectron spectroscopy (ZPS), we were able to resolve local bond relaxation and the associated 4f7/2 core-level shift of Au atomic clusters, Au(100, 110, 111) skins, and Au foils exposed to ozone for different lengths of time. In addition to quantitative information, such as local bond length, bond energy, binding-energy density, and atomic cohesive energy, the results confirm our predictions that bond-order deficiency shortens and stiffens the bond between undercoordinated atoms, which results in local densification and quantum entrapment of bonding electrons. The entrapment perturbs the Hamiltonian, and hence, shifts the core-level energy accordingly. ZPS also confirms that oxidation enhances the effect of atomic undercoordination on the positive 4f7/2 energy shift, with the associated valence electron polarization contributing to the catalytic ability of undercoordinated Au atoms.

We systematically examined the effect of atomic undercoordination on the performance of bonds and electrons of Rb and Cs atomic clusters and their solid skins using a combination of photoelectron spectrometric analysis and density functional theory calculations. Results show that atomic coordination number reduction shortens the bonds by up to 30% for the Rb13 and Cs13 clusters, which densifies the local electrons and entraps their binding energies. Consistency between predictions and observations revealed that the Rb 4p level shifts from 13.654 eV for an isolated atom to a bulk value of 14.940 eV and the Cs 5p level shifts from 10.284 to 11.830 eV upon bulk formation. Such core-electron densification and entrapment polarize the valence charge from the inner to the outermost layer of skins, which perturbs the local Hamiltonian and hence dictates the unusual behavior of the Rb and Cs solid skins and nanocrystals.

Infrared spectroscopy and contact-angle measurements revealed that NaCl salting has the same effect as heating on O:H phonon softening and H-O phonon stiffening, but has the opposite effect on skin polarization of liquid water. The mechanics of thermal modulation of O-O Coulomb repulsion [Sun, et al., J. Phys. Chem. Lett., 2013, 4, 3238] may suggest a possible mechanism for this NaCl involved Hofmeister effect, aqueous solution modulated surface tension and its abilities in protein dissolution, from the perspective of Coulomb mediation of interaction within the O:H-O bond.

The Mpemba paradox, that is, hotter water freezes faster than colder water, has baffled thinkers like Francis Bacon, René Descartes, and Aristotle since B.C. 350. However, a commonly accepted understanding or theoretical reproduction of this effect remains challenging. Numerical reproduction of observations, shown herewith, confirms that water skin supersolidity [Zhang et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., DOI: ] enhances the local thermal diffusivity favoring heat flowing outwardly in the liquid path. Analysis of experimental database reveals that the hydrogen bond (O:H-O) possesses memory to emit energy at a rate depending on its initial storage. Unlike other usual materials that lengthen and soften all bonds when they absorb thermal energy, water performs abnormally under heating to lengthen the O:H nonbond and shorten the H-O covalent bond through inter-oxygen Coulomb coupling [Sun et al., J. Phys. Chem. Lett., 2013, 4, 3238]. Cooling does the opposite to release energy, like releasing a coupled pair of bungees, at a rate of history dependence. Being sensitive to the source volume, skin radiation, and the drain temperature, the Mpemba effect proceeds only in the strictly non-adiabatic 'source-path-drain' cycling system for the heat "emission-conduction-dissipation" dynamics with a relaxation time that drops exponentially with the rise of the initial temperature of the liquid source.

Consistency in experimental observations, numerical calculations, and theoretical predictions have revealed that the skins of water and ice share the same attribute of supersolidity characterized by an identical H-O vibration frequency of 3450 cm(-1). Molecular undercoordination and inter-electron-pair repulsion shortens the H-O bond and lengthens the O:H nonbond, leading to a dual process of nonbonding electron polarization. This relaxation-polarization process enhances the dipole moment, elasticity, viscosity, and thermal stability of these skins with a 25% density loss, which is responsible for the hydrophobicity and toughness of the water skin and results in the slippery behavior of ice.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the relationship between PDZK1 expression and Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) perfusion parameters in High-Grade Glioma (HGG). METHODS: Preoperative DCE-MRI scanning was performed on 80 patients with HGG to obtain DCE perfusion transfer coefficient (Ktrans), vascular plasma volume fraction (vp), extracellular volume fraction (ve), and reverse transfer constant (kep). PDZK1 in HGG patients was detected, and its correlation with DCE-MRI perfusion parameters was assessed by the Pearson method. An analysis of Cox regression was performed to determine the risk factors affecting survival, while Kaplan-Meier and log-rank tests to evaluate PDZK1's prognostic significance, and ROC curve analysis to assess its diagnostic value. RESULTS: PDZK1 was upregulated in HGG patients and predicted poor overall survival and progression-free survival. Moreover, PDZK1 expression distinguished grade III from grade IV HGG. PDZK1 expression was positively correlated with Ktrans 90, and ve_90, and negatively correlated with kep_max, and kep_90. CONCLUSION: PDZK1 is upregulated in HGG, predicts poor survival, and differentiates tumor grading in HGG patients. PDZK1 expression is correlated with DCE-MRI perfusion parameters.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common malignant tumor, and its occurrence and development are closely related to dysbiosis of gut microbes. Previously, we found calorie restriction altered the composition of the microbial community in a colorectal cancer mouse model and inhibited in vivo growth of CRC cells. Here, we aim to further investigate alteration in the intestinal metabolites and explore the interplay between gut microbiota and intestinal metabolites upon calorie restriction. METHODS: Human colorectal cancer HCT116 cells were used to establish a colorectal cancer xenograft mouse model. The changes of intestinal metabolites in the ad libitum group and calorie restriction group were investigated through untargeted metabolomics analysis. The integrative analysis of gut microbiota and metabolites to elucidate the associations between gut microbiota and intestinal metabolites. RESULTS: Compared with the mice in the ad libitum group, mice upon calorie restriction exhibited downregulation of Isoleucyl-Valine, and upregulation of D-Proline, 1-Palmitoylphosphatidylcholine, and 4-Trimethylammoniobutanoic acid. Additionally, an integrative analysis of gut microbiota and metabolites revealed that Lactobacillus, Parabacteroides and rC4-4 genus were upregulated in the calorie restriction group and positively correlated with D-Proline, 4-Trimethylammoniobutanoic acid or 1-Palmitoylphosphatidylcholine, while negatively correlated with Isoleucyl-Valine. In contrast, the Nitrospirae and Deferribacteres phylum exhibited opposite trends. CONCLUSION: Calorie restriction affects the abundance of gut microbes such as Nitrospirae phylum and Lactobacillus genus in mouse model of colorectal cancer, leading to changes in the metabolites such as D-Proline、Isoleucyl-Valine, which contributes to the suppression of in vivo growth of CRC by calorie restriction.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to explore the functions and mechanisms of the LncRNA-KCNQ1OT1/miR-29a-3p/SOCS3 molecular pathway in the context of unexplained recurrent spontaneous abortion (URSA). METHODS: We conducted qRT-PCR to assess the levels of LncRNA-KCNQ1OT1, miR-29a-3p, and SOCS3 in both abortion tissues from women who experienced URSA and healthy early pregnant women. A dual-luciferase assay was employed to investigate whether miR-29a-3p targets SOCS3. Furthermore, RNA IP and RNA Pull-Down assays were employed to confirm the interaction between KCNQ1OT1 and SOCS3 with miR-29a-3p. RNA FISH was used to determine the cellular localization of KCNQ1OT1. Additionally, trophoblast cells (HTR8/SVneo) were cultured and the CCK-8 assay was utilized to assess cell proliferation, while flow cytometry was employed to analyze cell apoptosis. RESULTS: Compared to abortion tissues obtained from healthy early pregnant individuals, those from women who experienced URSA displayed a notable downregulation of KCNQ1OT1 and SOCS3, accompanied by an upregulation of miR-29a-3p. Suppression of KCNQ1OT1 resulted in the inhibition of cell proliferation and the facilitation of apoptosis in HTR8/SVneo cells. Our findings suggest that KCNQ1OT1 may exert a regulatory influence on SOCS3 through a competitive binding mechanism with miR-29a-3p. Notably, KCNQ1OT1 exhibited expression in both the cytoplasm and nucleus, with a predominant localization in the cytoplasm. Furthermore, we observed a negative regulatory relationship between miR-29a-3p and SOCS3, as the miR-29a-3p mimic group demonstrated significantly reduced cell proliferation and an increased rate of apoptosis when compared to the negative control (NC mimic) group. Additionally, the SOCS3 Vector group exhibited a substantial improvement in proliferation capability and a marked reduction in the apoptosis rate in comparison to the NC Vector group. The miR-29a-3p mimic + SOCS3 Vector group demonstrated a remarkable enhancement in proliferation and a reduction in apoptosis when compared to the miR-29a-3p mimic group. CONCLUSION: The competitive binding of miR-29a-3p to LncRNA-KCNQ1OT1 appears to result in the elevation of SOCS3 expression, consequently fostering the proliferation of trophoblast cells while concomitantly suppressing apoptosis.

RESUMO

Vibrational state-resolved experiments that probe methane dissociation on Ni(111) quantify the reactivity of CH4 excited to the ν2 + ν4 bending vibration. A comparison of these data and previous state-resolved measurements reveals that this bending vibration is significantly less reactive than the ν3 C-H stretching vibration in the same polyad of vibrations. Comparison with the 3ν4 bend overtone also suggests that the doubly degenerate bending state, ν2, is less effective than the triply degenerate bend (ν4) in promoting methane dissociative chemisorption on Ni(111). This observation of vibrational mode selectivity contradicts thermal statistical theories of gas-surface reactivity and provides direct experimental evidence of roles that different vibrational states can play in activating this gas-surface reaction.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of Ruji Recipe (RR) in preventing disease recurrence/metastasis and improving quality of life (QOL) for female breast cancer patients after operation. METHODS: Totally 102 female patients with stage I - III breast cancer were retrospectively analyzed. They were assigned to the treatment group (54 cases) and the control group (48 cases) according to whether they would rather accept RR therapy. Estrogen receptor/progesterone receptor (ER/PR) positive patients also accepted endocrine therapy. The overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), recurrence and metastasis, and QOL were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: Totally 100 patients completed the study. The median follow-up was 59 months. The median OS was 60 months in the treatment group and 52.5 months in the control group (chi2 = 3.274, P > 0.05). The median DFS was 55.0 months in the treatment group and 47.5 months in the control group (chi2 = 10.145, P < 0.01). The DFS rate was 75.9% (41/54) in the treatment group and 54.3% (25/46) in the control group (chi2 = -2.259, P < 0.05). There was statistical difference in the 2-, 3-, and 5-year DFS between the two groups (P < 0.01). There was statistical difference in the 2-year DFS 3-year DFS between stage II and III and stage III (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). There was statistical difference in the ER positive patients between 2-year DFS and 3-year DFS (P < 0.01, P < 0.05). There was statistical difference in the 3-and 5-year distant metastasis rate (DMR) in the treatment group, lower than that of the control group (3.7% vs 31.0%, 20.7% vs 60.7%; P < 0.01). By the end of follow-up, disease progression occurred in 13 cases of the treatment group, local recurrence in 3 cases, single organ metastasis in 7 cases, multi-metastasis in 3 cases, while the corresponding numbers were 21, 1, 11, and 9 in the control group (P < 0.05). As for 1 week before study and at 2-year follow-up using Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy for Breast Cancer (FACT-B) system, there was statistical difference in the QOL between the two groups (P < 0.05), and better effect was obtained in the treatment group. CONCLUSION: RR, as an assistant therapy, could improve the OS rate, the DFS rate, and the QOL for post-surgical female breast cancer patients in 2 -3 years.
