RESUMO

The variation of a number of parameters characterizing aquatic plant assemblages in rivers across a wide trophic gradient was investigated to evaluate their usefulness for a Polish national river monitoring system. Analyses were conducted at 100 sites included in the national river monitoring system, representing a uniform river type, i.e., small- and medium-sized lowland rivers with a sandy substrate. Results of botanical surveys, which were supplemented with comprehensive monthly quality records, were obtained from the national monitoring database. By analyzing the Jaccard distances of the botanical metrics using the adonis function, the variation in species composition between rivers of different trophic status was determined. The group consisting of the most degraded rivers was the most homogeneous in terms of botanical composition. The cleanest rivers displayed a high level of heterogeneity within their group, as numerous different unique species were found there at low frequencies. The variation of the macrophyte metrics used to assess the ecological status (Macrophyte Index for Rivers (MIR) and River Macrophyte Nutrient Index (RMNI)) reflected a trophic gradient. We confirmed that vegetation diversification along a trophic gradient is evident enough to detect degradation in a five quality class system.

In this paper 13 elements, both physiological and causing toxic effects, were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in roots of 26 species of herbs used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The herbs were purchased from online shop in two batches 1 year apart to verify the variability of elemental content in time. The multivariate statistical methods-multiple regression, canonical variates and interaction effect analysis-were applied to interpret the data and to show the relationships between elements and two batches of herb roots. The maximum permissible concentration of Cd (0.3 mg kg-1) was exceeded in 7 herb roots which makes 13% of all specimens. The multiple regression analysis revealed the significant relationships between elements: Mg with Sr; V with Pb, As and Ba; Mn with Pb; Fe with As and Ba; Co with Ni and Sr, Cu with Pb, Cd and As; Zn with Pb, Cd, As and Ba. The canonical variates analysis showed that the statistical inference should not be based solely on the type of herb or number of batch because of the underlying interaction effects between those two variables that may be a source of variability of the content of determined elements.

The Tea Bag Index (TBI) method was used to estimate the litter decomposition rate in peatland exposed for climate manipulation (increased temperature and reduced precipitation) at two contrasting sites differing in water table depth (WTD) dynamics. To manipulate climate on peatland, the prototyped Open Top Chambers (OTC) and automated rain-out shelters were used. OTCs increased daytime air temperatures by ~1.7 °C at the driest plots exposed for an increase of air temperature and reduced precipitation, while the increase of the average daily air temperature was lower than 0.9 °C. However, OTCs cooled down the peat temperature even by 0.8 °C and this effect was most pronounced for daytime rather than night-time conditions. The precipitation amount was reduced by 26%. The tea bags were buried at 8 cm depth for 83 and 172 days starting from the 19th of April 2019. Our observation proved that although decomposition rates were dependent on temperature, WTD and its fluctuations are the main factors controlling the rates of litter decomposition in waterlogged ecosystems like ours. At waterlogged Sphagnum-dominated peatlands, the interrelation between different environmental factors may mitigate the impact of warming and reduced precipitation on litter decomposition.
