RESUMO

An acid-neutralizing, filamentous, non-heterocytous, marine cyanobacterium named 'LK' has been isolated from the seashore of Bangaram Island, an atoll of Lakshadweep, India, and is described here as a novel species. LK has been characterized using morphological, ecological, and genomic features. Based on 16S rRNA, whole-genome sequencing, and marker gene-based analysis, LK has been identified as a new species. LK clustered with Leptolyngbya-like strains belonging to the LPP group but diverged from Leptolyngbya sensu stricto, indicating the polyphyletic nature of the Leptolyngbya genus. Leptolyngbya sp. SIOISBB and Halomicronema sp. CCY15110 were identified as LK's two closest phylogenetic neighbors in various phylogenetic studies. The analysis of 16S rRNA, ITS secondary structures, and genome relatedness indices such as AAI, ANI, and gANI strongly support LK as a novel species of the Leptolyngbya genus. The mechanism behind acid neutralization in LK has been delineated, attributing it to a surface phenomenon most likely due to the presence of salts of calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium. We name LK as Leptolyngbya iicbica strain LK which is a novel species with prominent acidic pH-neutralizing properties.

RESUMO

It is of interest to assess the association of age and gender of patients undergoing class V tooth colored restoration in maxillary teeth. Records were collected by reviewing the data of 86,000 patients of which 1580 patients had undergone class V tooth colored restoration in maxillary teeth. Patients were divided into age groups 18-30, 31-40,41-50,71-80 years. The most common age group who had undergone class V restoration was in the age group 41-50 years (30.8%). Cervical abrasions were the most common (79%). Most of the patients underwent direct restoration (87.7%). Direct restoration was found to be more prevalent in the age group 41-50 years due to cervical abrasion.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Dental anxiety is a kind of fear exerted due to threatening stimuli. Assessing a child's dental anxiety level is very important to perform a particular treatment. The aim of this study is to examine the various factors that determine the anxiety levels in children and evaluate their anxiety levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 50 children participated in the survey conducted. Each participant had fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria to answer the questionnaire. It included questions regarding their habits, fears, and dental visit experience. Evaluation of their anxiety levels was done using the facial image scale (FIS) and the modified dental anxiety scale and was correlated with various factors using the Statistical Package for Social Science Software. RESULTS: Female children are more anxious than male children toward dental treatment. About 38% were anxious and 16% refused while undergoing radiographic examination and showed significant anxiety levels (P = 0.012). About 16% of the population were highly uncooperative and were necessary to implement behavioral shaping techniques on them. It influences the FIS anxiety score before initiation of the treatment (P = 0.003). About 48% of children had maintained a good rapport with the dentist and showed strong significance with the child's anxiety (P = 0.025). CONCLUSION: Gender and behavior of the child while diagnosis and radiographic examination, implementation of behavioral shaping techniques, and rapport developed between child and dentist are all influencing factors of dental anxiety. The number of visits to the dental clinic, socioeconomic status, kind of amount of consumption of sugars, and type of treatment being done do not contribute to a child's anxiety level.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Given the increase in hookah use among young adults, characteristics of hookah use/users, as well as reasons for its use or discontinuation among young adults, are critical to understand. METHODS: Data from a study of 18-25 year olds from seven Georgia colleges/universities (n=2865) were analyzed to examined: 1) differences in socio-demographics and other substance use among current (past 4 months), never, and former hookah users; 2) use characteristics among current users (e.g. device types/flavors used, quit intentions); and 3) reasons for use, potential use, and discontinued use among current, never, and former users. RESULTS: Of the students, 56.3% were never users, 12.4% were current, and 31.3% former users. Correlates of being a current (vs never) user included being 'other race' (vs White), attending a historically black college/university (HBCU vs technical college), and use of other substances. Correlates of being a former (vs never) hookah user included being older (vs younger), being 'other race' (vs White), attending an HBCU (vs technical college), and use of other tobacco products, marijuana, or alcohol. Among current users, 73.7% reported no intention to quit; 26.2% attempted to quit in the past year. Two factors were identified regarding reasons for current use (flavors, social reasons): one factor regarding potential use among never users (related to flavors and social factors), and three factors regarding discontinued use (inconvenience, anti-tobacco attitude, social reasons). CONCLUSIONS: Findings indicate the risk factors for hookah use and the importance of particular factors (e.g. flavors, social influences) relevant to regulation/policy.

RESUMO

Sub-Saharan Africa reports repeated outbreaks of measles, a vaccine preventable disease, which is notifiable under the Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response strategy in Nigeria. Nigeria has reported several outbreaks of measles in the last three years. Poor immunization coverage and weak health systems have been related with measles. This case study is based on real events that occurred during the 2015 outbreak of measles in Kaduna state Northwestern Nigeria. This case study was based upon real events that occurred in community X in Igabi LGA of Kaduna state. However, some of the results were edited to allow the case study to be completed in a facilitated classroom session. Knowledge and practice of investigating outbreaks is a key public health function of public health workers. The purpose of this case study is to simulate outbreak investigation for teaching of postgraduate public health practitioners. The participants should have received lectures or other training on outbreak investigation without the practical experience of investigating an outbreak but are being prepared to investigate outbreaks in the field. This case study should be taken in a classroom setting and should take two hours to complete.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: We examined differential advertising strategies used by 4 major United States e-cigarette companies with differential affiliations with the traditional tobacco industry (ie, Njoy - independent, Blu - acquired, Vuse and MarkTen - launched by cigarette companies) over time. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods study regarding e-cigarette adspend, adspend per media channel (eg, TV, print), and advertising messaging strategies among these 4 top e-cigarette brands from January 2013 through December 2015. RESULTS: E-cigarette adspend increased from $59 million in 2013 to $91 million in 2014, followed by a sharp decline to $37 million in 2015. These companies showed distinct spending trajectories overall and across media channels, with Njoy and Vuse spending a higher proportion of their dollars on TV and Blu and MarkTen spending more on print. Marketing messages were also different by company. Key themes included switching from cigarettes (particularly by Njoy and Blu), circumventing smoke-free policies (particularly by Blu), and technological advancement (particularly by Vuse and MarkTen). CONCLUSIONS: These e-cigarette brands have shifted their adspend, use of media channels, and advertising messaging strategies over time. Some differing strategies may reflect the different affiliations of each brand to the traditional cigarette industry.
