RESUMO

Suaeda glauca, a halophyte in the Amaranthaceae family, exhibits remarkable resilience to high salt and alkali stresses despite the absence of salt glands or vesicles in its leaves. While there is growing pharmacological interest in S. glauca, research on its secondary metabolites remains limited. In this study, chemical constituents of the aerial parts of S. glauca were identified using 1D- and 2D-NMR experiments, and its biological activity concerning hair loss was newly reported. Eight compounds, including alkaloids (1~3), flavonoids (4~6), and phenolics (7 and 8), were isolated. The compounds, except the flavonoids, were isolated for the first time from S. glauca. In the HPLC chromatogram, quercetin-3-O-ß-d-glucoside, kaempferol-3-O-ß-d-glucoside, and kaempferol were identified as major constituents in the extract of S. glauca. Additionally, the therapeutic potential of the extract of S. glauca and the isolated compounds 1~8 on the expressions of VEGF and IGF-1, as well as the regulation of Wnt/ß-catenin signaling, were evaluated in human follicle dermal papilla cells (HFDPCs) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Among the eight compounds, compound 4 was the most potent in terms of increasing the expression of VEGF and IGF-1 and the regulation of Wnt/ß-catenin. These findings suggest that S. glauca extract and its compounds are potential new candidates for preventing or treating hair loss.

RESUMO

A Gram-staining-negative, aerobic, cream-coloured, marine bacterium, with rod-shaped cells, designated strain YJ-S3-2T, was isolated from salt flat sediment of Yongyu-do, Republic of Korea. YJ-S3-2T grew at pH 5.0-9.0 (optimum pH 7.0), 4-45 °C (optimum 30 °C) and with 1-18 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 6 %). The results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that YJ-S3-2T was closely related to Marinobacter segnicrescens SS011B1-4T (97.0 %) followed by, 'Marinobacter nanhaiticus' D15-8W (96.7 %), Marinobacter bryozoorum 50-11T (96.7 %), Marinobacter koreensis DSMZ 179240T T (96.5 %) and Marinobacter bohaiensis T17T (96.5 %). The average nucleotide identity (ANI) and the genome to genome distance calculator (GGDC) estimate values between YJ-S3-2T and related type strains were 73.7-79.8 and 19.9-22.5 %, and also 73.5 and 20.7 % with Marinobacter hydrocarbonoclasticus. YJ-S3-2T was characterized as having Q-9 as the predominant respiratory quinone and the principal fatty acids (>10 %) were C16 : 0 (22.3 %), summed feature 9 (C17 : 1iso ω9c/C16 : 0 10-methyl, 13.8 %) and 3 (C16 : 1ω7c/C16 : 1ω6c, 11.9 %). The polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, two unidentified aminolipids and two unidentified phospholipids. The DNA G+C content of YJ-S3-2T is 60.9 mol%. On the basis of the polyphasic taxonomic evidence presented in this study, YJ-S3-2T should be classified as representing a novel species within the genus Marinobacter, for which name Marinobacter halodurans sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain YJ-S3-2T (=KACC 19883T=KCTC 62937T=JCM 33109T).

RESUMO

An enhanced, multiple lines of evidence approach was applied to assess potential toxicological effects associated with polluted sediments. Two in vitro bioassays (H4IIE-luc and Vibrio fischeri) and three in vivo bioassays (microalgae: Isochrysis galbana and Phaeodactylum tricornutum; zebrafish embryo: Danio rerio) were applied. To identify causative chemicals in samples, targeted analyses (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), styrene oligomers (SOs), and alkylphenols) and nontargeted full-scan screening analyses (FSA; GC- and LC-QTOFMS) were performed. First, great AhR-mediated potencies were observed in midpolar and polar fractions of sediment extracts, but known and previously characterized AhR agonists, including PAHs and SOs could not fully explain the total potencies of samples. Enoxolone was identified as a novel AhR agonist in a highly potent sediment fraction by use of FSA. Enoxolone has a relative potency of 0.13 compared to benzo[a]pyrene (1.0) in the H4IIE-luc bioassay. Nonylphenols associated with membrane damage that influenced the viability of the microalgae were also observed. Finally, inhibitions of bioluminescence of V. fischeri and lethality of D. rerio embryos were strongly related to nonpolar compounds. Overall, the present work addressed assay- and end point-specific variations and sensitivities for potential toxicities of mixture samples, warranting a significant utility of the "multiple lines of evidence" approach in ecological risk assessment.

RESUMO

A novel Gram-strain-positive, non-spore-forming bacterial strain, designated GP-T3-3T, was isolated from sediment sampled at a tidal flat in Gopado, Republic of Korea. Cells were aerobic, catalase-negative, oxidase-positive, non-motile cocci that occurred singly, in pairs or in clusters. Strain GP-T3-3T grew at 4-45 °C (optimum, 28-37 °C), at pH 4.0-12.0 (pH 8.0-9.0) and in the presence of 0-15 % (w/v) NaCl (3-5 %). Colonies of strain GP-T3-3T were deep-yellow, circular, smooth and pulvinate. The results of the phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain GP-T3-3T was closely related to Serinicoccus profundi MCCC 1A05965T (99.1 %), Serinicoccus chungangensis CAU 9536T (99.0 %) and Serinicoccus marinus JC1078T (98.0 %). The diagnostic diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. The predominant respiratory quinone was MK-8(H4) and the major fatty acids were anteiso-C17 : 0, iso-C16 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. The polar lipid profile consisted of diphosphadidylglycerol, phosphadidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylinositol and two unidentified phospholipids. The DNA G+C content was 72.9 mol%. DNA-DNA relatedness values between strain GP-T3-3T and type strains of the genus Serinicoccus ranged from 28.9 to 50.5 %. RESUMO

After the Gulf War Oil Spill, there have been many investigations about distributions of oil-derived pollutants nearby areas, but lacking in ecotoxicological assessment. We evaluated the potential toxicity of asphalt mats, sediments, and biota (polychaetes, chitons, snapping shrimps, and crabs) by combining two bioassays (H4IIE-luc and Vibrio fischeri) and in situ microbial community (eDNA). Samples were collected from Abu Ali Island, and organic extracts were bioassayed and further fractionated according to the chemical polarity using silica gel column. Great aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR)-mediated potencies and inhibition of bioluminescence were mainly found in aromatics (F2) and saturates (F1) fractions of asphalt mat and sediments, respectively, while great toxicological responses in biota samples were found in resins and polar (F3) fraction. We also confirmed that potential toxicities of biota were species-specific; great AhR-mediated potencies were found in polychaetes and great bioluminescence inhibitions were found in crabs. In microbial communities, most genera (up to 90%) were associated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)-degrading bacteria, supporting that PAHs are the primary stressors of the benthic community around Abu Ali Island. The present study provides useful information on the contamination status, risk assessment of environmental matrices and benthic organisms in Abu Ali Island.

RESUMO

A novel Gram-strain-positive, non-spore-forming bacterial strain, designated GP-S2-8T, was isolated from a sea-tidal flat sediment sample from Gopado, Republic of Korea. Cells were aerobic, catalase-negative, oxidase-positive, non-motile and cocci, occurring singly, in pairs or in tetrads, and often tending to form aggregates. The strain grew at 4-45 °C (optimum, 28-37 °C), at pH 4.0-11.0 (pH 7.0-9.0) and in the presence of 0-11 % (w/v) NaCl (0-3 %). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences represented that the isolate belongs to the genus Blastococcus. The diagnostic diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. Whole-cell sugar analysis of strain GP-S2-8T revealed rhamnose, glucose and mannose as characteristic sugars. Cells were oxidase-positive, catalase-positive, rod-shaped and surrounded by a capsule with gliding motility. Colonies were yellow-coloured, circular, pulvinate with entire margins. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain SDRB-Phe2T formed a distinct lineage within the genus Maribacter of the family Flavobacteriaceae. Stain SDRB-Phe2T exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 97.1-98.9 % to the type strains of Maribacterstanieri, Maribacterspongiicola, Maribacter forsetii, Maribacter dokdonensis, Maribacter aquivivus, Maribactercaenipelagi, Maribacterlitorisediminis, Maribactersedimenticola, Maribacterulvicola, Maribacter confluentis and Maribacter orientalis, and of 94.8-96.7 % to the type strains of the other species of the genus Maribacter. Strain SDRB-Phe2T contained MK-6 as the predominant respiratory quinone and iso-C15 : 1 G, iso-C15 : 0 and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c) as the major fatty acids. The polar lipids of strain SDRB-Phe2T were phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified amino lipid and two unidentified lipids. The DNA G+C content was 36.2 mol%. DNA-DNA relatedness values of strain SDRB-Phe2T to the type strains of the 11 phylogenetically related species of the genus Maribacter were 21.9-38.6 %. On the basis of the phenotypic features, phylogenetic and DNA-DNA hybridization analyses presented here, strain SDRB-Phe2T (=JCM 32373T=KCTC 62273T=DSM 106042T) represents a novel species of the genus Maribacter, for which the name Maribacterlitoralis sp. nov. is proposed.

RESUMO

A novel Gram-stain-negative, motile, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain 102-Py4T, was isolated from Sinduri beach sediment in Taean, Republic of Korea. Cells were aerobic, oxidase-positive and catalase-positive. The isolate grew optimally with 1-3 % (w/v) NaCl, but NaCl is not an absolute requirement for growth. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain 102-Py4T clustered together with Zobellella aerophila and fell within the clade formed by recognized species of the genus Zobellella. Its closest phylogenetic neighbours were Z. aerophila JC2671T (98.1 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), Zobellella denitrificans ZD1T (96.4 %) and Zobellella taiwanensis ZT1T (96.0 %). The major fatty acids were summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c), C12 : 0, summed feature 8 (comprising C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c) and C16 : 0. The polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and two unidentified amino lipids. The DNA G+C content was 62.1 mol%. The DNA-DNA relatedness value between strain 102-Py4T and Z. aerophila JC2671T was 12.4±1.3 %. The phenotypic properties of 102-Py4T demonstrated that this strain could be distinguished from other Zobellella species. On the basis of the data presented, strain 102-Py4T (=KCTC 62272T=JCM 32359T=DSM 106043T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Zobellella, for which the name Zobellella maritima sp. nov. is proposed.

RESUMO

A Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, motile and rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated 102-Na3T, was isolated from sediment of Sinduri beach in Taean, Republic of Korea. Strain 102-Na3T grew optimally at 28-37 °C, at pH 7.0-11.0 and in the presence of 1-3 % (w/v) NaCl, but NaCl was not an absolute requirement for growth. The neighbour-joining phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain 102-Na3T joined the clade comprising the type strains of Oceanimonasspecies. Strain 102-Na3T exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 98.8, 98.3 and 98.0 % to the type strains of Oceanimonas doudoroffii MBIC1298T, Oceanimonas baumannii GB6T and Oceanimonas smirnovii 31-13T, respectively. Strain 102-Na3T contained summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c), summed feature 8 (comprising C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c), C16 : 0 and C12 : 0 as major fatty acids. The major quinone was ubiquinone-8. The polar lipids were composed of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and two unidentified amino lipids. The DNA G+C content was 56.8 mol%. Strain 102-Na3T exhibited DNA-DNA relatedness values of 25.7, 21.7 and 14.8 % to the type strains of O. doudoroffii, O. baumannii and O. smirnovii, respectively. Differential phenotypic properties, together with its phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness, revealed that strain 102-Na3T is separated from recognized species of the genus Oceanimonas. On the basis of the data presented, strain 102-Na3T (=KCTC 62271T=JCM 32358T=DSM 106032T) is considered the type strain of a novel species of the genus Oceanimonas, for which the name Oceanimonas marisflavi sp. nov. is proposed.

RESUMO

Dispersion and biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons are significantly enhanced by formation of oil-suspended particulate matter aggregates (OSAs), but little is known about their adverse effects on benthic invertebrates or microbes. In this study, we investigated: (1) bioaccumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by the marine bivalve, Mactra veneriformis and (2) changes in composition and relative abundances of microbes, during 50-d of an OSAs feeding experiment. Total concentrations of PAHs increased more rapidly during the first week of exposure, peaked at Day 30, then gradually declined to the end of experiment. While bioaccumulation of PAHs by clams varied among the 20 target compounds, two major groups of PAHs were identified by cluster analysis. One group including 3-methylphenanthrene, 1,6-dimethylphenanthrene, 1,2,6,9-tetramethylphenanthrene, and benzo[ a]anthracene showed a fairly constant rate of accumulation, while the second group including 2-methyldibenzothiophene, 2,4-dimethyldibenzothiophene, 2,4,7-trimethyldibenzothiophene, 3-methylchrysene, 6-ethylchrysene, and 1,3,6-trimethylchrysene exhibited a bell-shaped pattern. Bioaccumulation of PAHs by clams was dependent on changes in abundance of Gammaproteobacteria, indicating active degradations of hydrocarbons by selected species. Six key species included: Porticoccus litoralis, Porticoccus hydrocarbonoclasticus, Cycloclasticus spirillensus, Alcanivorax borkumensis, Alcanivorax dieselolei, and Alkalimarinus sediminis. These results are the first to demonstrate interactions of OSAs and macrofauna/microbe in oil cleanup operations.

RESUMO

This study investigated the relationships between phytoplankton assemblages and water contamination by persistent toxic substances (PTSs) and nutrients in an estuary with an artificial dam over one year. The distribution of PTSs, including 15 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, 6 alkylphenols, and 8 metal(loid)s, along with nutrients, exhibited relatively high concentrations with irregular temporal fluctuations in the inner estuary. During winter and spring, phytoplankton communities showed good ecological quality, with an average of 28 species and a density of 1750 cells L-1. In contrast, during summer, there was a significant increase in the density of freshwater species (max 45,000 cells L-1). These assemblages were categorized into three seasonal groups, featuring dominant taxa like blue-green algae and diatoms. Temperature and nutrient levels were the principal factors influencing phytoplankton assemblages, while PTSs had a minor impact. Overall, phytoplankton assemblages displayed strong seasonal variation, mainly influenced by freshwater input and nutrient availability.

RESUMO

The man-made sea dike has disrupted the natural link between riverine and marine ecosystems and caused eutrophication within the aquatic ecosystem. The eutrophic water discharge has also raised concerns. As a representative tidal flat with the longest dike in the world, Saemangeum has experienced the problem of eutrophication. To elucidate the discharge water effects on the benthic food web dynamics, a four-year round sampling was conducted in/outside of the Saemangeum sea dike. Stable isotope analysis was applied to benthos (a total of 54 species) and their potential diets. Water discharge tripled in period II (2021-2022) compared to the period I (2019-2020). However, there were no significant impact changes in food web structure between the two periods due to improved lake water quality in period II. A positive correlation of nutrient concentration between the inner and outer areas of the dike revealed a direct effect of the water discharge on the outer tidal flat. The water discharge altered the spatial environmental conditions and the food web structure of the outer tidal flat. High TN concentrations stimulated the biomass of microphytobenthos (MPB) near the water gates, which in turn increased MPB consumption by benthos, demonstrating the in/direct impacts of water discharge on the food web. Furthermore, filter feeders exhibited a more sensitive response to spatial organic matter distribution compared to deposit feeders in diet utilization. Overall, our novel findings on food web dynamics in a representative tidal flat with artificial structures emphasize the necessity of continuous monitoring to ensure the sustainability of coastal ecosystems.

RESUMO

This study utilizes ultraviolet and fluorescence spectroscopic indices of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from sediments, combined with machine learning (ML) models, to develop an optimized predictive model for estimating sediment total organic carbon (TOC) and identifying adjacent land-use types in coastal sediments from the Yellow and Bohai Seas. Our results indicate that ML models surpass traditional regression techniques in estimating TOC and classifying land-use types. Penalized Least Squares Regression (PLR) and Cubist models show exceptional TOC estimation capabilities, with PLR exhibiting the lowest training error and Cubist achieving a correlation coefficient 0.79. In land-use classification, Support Vector Machines achieved 85.6 % accuracy in training and 92.2 % in testing. Maximum fluorescence intensity and ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm were crucial factors influencing TOC variations in coastal sediments. This study underscores the efficacy of ML models utilizing DOM optical indices for near real-time estimation of marine sediment TOC and land-use classification.

RESUMO

Natural purification of pollutants is highly recognized as regulating ecosystem services; however, the purification capacity of tidal flats remains largely unknown and/or unquantified. A 60-day mesocosm transplant experiment was conducted in situ to assess the purification capacity of natural tidal flats. We adopted the advanced sediment quality triad approach, monitoring 10 endpoints, including chemical reduction, toxicity changes, and community recoveries. The results indicated that contaminated sediments rapidly recovered over time, particularly > 50% within a day, then slowly recovered up to âˆ¼ 70% in a given period (60 days). A significant early reduction of parent pollutants was evidenced across all treatments, primarily due to active bacterial decomposition. Notably, the presence of benthic fauna and vegetated halophytes in the treatments significantly enhanced the purification of pollutants in both efficacy and efficiency. A forecast linear modeling further suggested additive effects of biota on the natural purification of tidal flats, reducing a full recovery time from 500 to 300 days. Overall, the triad approach with machine learning practices successfully demonstrated quantitative insight into the integrated assessment of natural purification.

RESUMO

Humans have been contributing adversely to greenhouse gas emissions by generating a vast amount of CO2, primarily causing climate change. Nature-based climate solutions, consisting of both terrestrial and marine ecosystems, are tremendous potential for sequestering and storing significant amounts of carbon, which can help to slow the progression of climate change. In this study, we use a carbon balance model to simulate the carbon sequestration rate and carbon stored in bare tidal flat (BTF) areas along Korea's west and south coasts from 2018 to 2050. Furthermore, the percentage of potential carbon sources deposited at BTF sites was calculated using a two-terminal mixing model and δ13C data. The carbon deposited on the BTF areas is the result of lateral carbon transport from upslope terrestrial regions as well as marine sources. Based on the δ13C isotope, this study classified potential carbon sources in BTFs sediment into two categories: terrestrial and marine. The results indicate that the proportion of organic carbon contribution from terrestrial sources ranged from 7.63% to 49% in the BTF studied areas. We discuss the validity of projection which was investigated over three years, from 2018 to 2020. A preliminary conclusion is that future carbon storage at BTF sites will increase significantly. Carbon accumulation increases linearly over time in nearly all areas studied, with carbon sequestration rates ranging from 0.053 to 0.623 (MgC ha-1 yr-1). This study found that a significant amount of carbon is sequestered for a long time in the BTF regions based on model simulation results. In addition, it also contributes to projects that seek to promote and conserve these climate benefits by providing estimates of carbon storage in coastal BTFs that can be included in NDCs for the Paris Agreement.

RESUMO

Global recognition that mangroves support coastal ecosystem services has increased; however, studies on trophic dynamics in mangrove ecosystems remain limited. We seasonally analysed the δ13C and δ15N of 34 consumers and 5 diets to elucidate the food web dynamics in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE). Fish had a large niche space during the monsoon summer, reflecting increased trophic roles. In contrast, the small niche space of benthos over seasons reflected consistent trophic positions. Consumers mainly utilized plant-derived organic matters in the dry season and particulate organic matters in the wet season. The present study with literature reviews revealed characteristics of the PRE food web with the depleted δ13C and enriched δ15N, indicating a high contribution of mangrove-derived organic carbon and sewage input, particularly in the wet season. Overall, this study confirmed the seasonal and spatial trophic dynamics in mangrove forests surrounding megacities for future sustainable mangrove ecosystem management.

RESUMO

This study was conducted to investigate the spatiotemporal variability in subtidal meiofaunal assemblages off the southern coast of Korea at local and regional scales. Abiotic and biotic samples were collected by site (three sites at least 10 km apart) within region (three coastal regions at least 50 km apart) over 7 years (2015-2021). The density and taxon richness of meiofaunal assemblages differed significantly among sites, but not among regions or years. The meiofaunal assemblage composition differed significantly among sites, regions, and years. A distance-based multivariate multiple regression analysis revealed that the mean sediment grain size and total nitrogen, lead, nickel, chromium, and aluminum concentrations were key environmental variables determining the variation of the meiofaunal assemblages. This study can provide basic ecological data for understanding the spatiotemporal distribution of meiofauna assemblages and aid in the development of management strategies to mitigate marine pollution on the southern coast of Korea.

RESUMO

Historical trends of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contamination were reconstructed from eleven sediment cores located in intertidal zones of the Yellow and Bohai seas for a period encompassing the last 80 years. The analysis encompassed 15 traditional PAHs (t-PAHs), 9 emerging PAHs (e-PAHs), and 30 halogenated PAHs (Hl-PAHs), including 10 chlorinated PAHs (Cl-PAHs) and 20 brominated PAHs (Br-PAHs). Concentrations of target PAHs were highest in industrial and municipal areas situated along the coast of the Bohai Sea, including Huludao, Yingkou, Tianjin, and Dandong, constituting a substantial mass inventory. All target PAHs showed increasing trends since the 1950s, reflecting the development history of South Korea and China. High molecular weight PAHs accumulated in sampling sites more than low molecular weight PAHs. A positive matrix factorization model showed that the PAH sources were coal and gasoline combustion (35%), diesel combustion (33%), and biomass combustion (32%). Over the last 80 years, the contribution of coal and gasoline combustion increased in all regions, while diesel combustion and biomass combustion varied across regions and over time. Toxicity equivalence values were highest for t-PAHs (>99% contribution), followed by Cl-PAHs, Br-PAHs, and e-PAHs. Concentrations of t-PAHs in Eastern Asia seas have increased since the 1900s, particularly in intertidal areas compared to subtidal areas. The intertidal zone removed 83% of the total flux of PAHs originating from land and thus appears to serve as a buffer zone against marine pollution. Overall, this study provides novel knowledge on the historical trends and sources of PAHs on a large scale, along with insights for future coastal management.

RESUMO

The Hebei Spirit oil spill occurred in December 2007 approximately 10 km off the coast of Taean, South Korea, on the Yellow Sea. However, the exposure and potential effects remain largely unknown. A total of 50 surface and subsurface sediment samples were collected from 22 sampling locations at the spill site in order to determine the concentration, distribution, composition of residual crudes, and to evaluate the potential ecological risk after two years of oil exposure. Samples were extracted and analyzed for 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 20 alkyl-PAHs, 15 aliphatic hydrocarbons, and total petroleum hydrocarbons using GC-MSD. AhR-mediated activity associated with organic sediment extracts was screened using the H4IIE-luc cell bioassay. The response of the benthic invertebrate community was assessed by mapping the macrobenthic fauna. Elevated concentrations of residual crudes from the oil spill were primarily found in muddy bottoms, particularly in subsurface layers. In general, the bioassay results were consistent with the chemistry data in a dose-dependent manner, although the mass-balance was incomplete. More weathered samples containing greater fractions of alkylated PAHs exhibited greater AhR activity, due to the occurrence of recalcitrant AhR agonists present in residual oils. The macrobenthic population distribution exhibits signs of species-specific tolerances and/or recolonization of certain species such as Batillaria during weathering periods. Although the Hebei Spirit oil spill was a severe oil exposure, it appears the site is recovering two years later.
