RESUMO

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is a prevalent condition with a broad spectrum defined by liver biopsy. This gold standard method evaluates three features: steatosis, activity (ballooning and lobular inflammation), and fibrosis, attributing them to certain grades or stages using a semiquantitative scoring system. However, liver biopsy is subject to numerous restrictions, creating an unmet need for a reliable and reproducible method for MASLD assessment, grading, and staging. Noninvasive imaging modalities, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), offer the potential to assess quantitative liver parameters. This review aims to provide an overview of the available MRI techniques for the three criteria evaluated individually by liver histology. Here, we discuss the possibility of combining multiple MRI parameters to replace liver biopsy with a holistic, multiparametric MRI protocol. In conclusion, the development and implementation of such an approach could significantly improve the diagnosis and management of MASLD, reducing the need for invasive procedures and paving the way for more personalized treatment strategies.

Due to its increasing prevalence, Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) represents a major health challenge for modern society. Despite it being of fundamental interest, only a few MRI studies have conducted statistical analyses to draw scientifically valid conclusions about the complex interplay of T2DM and its associated clinical, structural, functional, metabolite, as well as cognitive distortions. Therefore, a systematic review of 68 manuscripts, following the PRISMA guidelines, was conducted. Notably, although the associations between imaging, clinical, and cognitive variables are not fully homogeneous, findings show a clear trend towards a link between altered brain structure and a decline in cognitive processing ability. The results of the review highlight the heterogeneity of the methods used across manuscripts in terms of assessed clinical variables, imaging, and data analysis methods. This is particularly significant as, if the subjects' criteria are not carefully considered, results are easily prone to confounding factors.

PURPOSE: To investigate the correlation between electrical conductivity and sodium concentration, both measured in vivo, in the human brain. METHODS: Conductivity measurements were performed on samples with different sodium (Na+ ) and agarose concentrations using a dielectric probe, and the correlation between conductivity and Na+ content was evaluated. Subsequently, brain conductivity and total Na+ content maps were measured in 8 healthy subjects using phase-based MREPT and sodium MRI, respectively. After co-registration and spatial normalization to the 1 mm 152 MNI brain atlas, the relationship between conductivity and tissue sodium concentration (TSC) was examined within different brain regions. RESULTS: The conductivities of agarose gels increased linearly with NaCl concentration, while remaining almost independent of agarose content. When measured in healthy subjects, conductivities showed positive correlation with total tissue sodium concentration (R = 0.39, P < 0.005). The same trend was found in gray matter (R = 0.36, P < 0.005) and in white matter (R = 0.28, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Tissue conductivity shows a positive correlation with total sodium concentration. Conductivity might serve as a novel technique to visualize the total tissue electrolyte concentration, although refinements in the consideration of e.g., tissue water content, would be necessary to improve the quantitative value.

Approaches for the quantitative mapping of water content, electrical conductivity and susceptibility have been developed independently. The purpose of this study is to develop a method for simultaneously acquiring quantitative water content, electrical conductivity and susceptibility maps based on a 2D multi-echo gradient echo sequence. Another purpose is to investigate the changes in these properties caused by brain tumours. This was done using a 3T hybrid magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography (MR-PET) scanner. Water content maps were derived after performing T2* and transmit-receive field bias corrections to magnitude images essentially reflecting only the H2O content contrast. Phase evolution during the multi-echo train was used to generate field maps and derive quantitative susceptibility, while the conductivity maps were retrieved from the phase value at zero echo time. Performance of the method is demonstrated on phantoms and two healthy volunteers. In addition, the method was applied to three patients with brain tumours and a comparison to maps obtained from PET using O-(2-[18 F]fluoroethyl)-L-tyrosine and clinical MR images is presented. The combined information of the water content, conductivity and susceptibility may provide additional information about the tissue viability. Future studies can benefit from the evaluation of these contrasts with shortened acquisition times.
