RESUMO

The what, where, and when components of episodic memory can be differentiated based on their distinctive domain-specific underlying neural correlates. However, recent studies have proposed that a common neural mechanism of conceptual mapping may be involved in the coding of cognitive distance across all domains. In this study, we provide evidence that both domain-specific and domain-general processes occur simultaneously during memory retrieval by identifying distinctive and common neural representations for mapping what (i.e., semantic distance), where (i.e., spatial distance), and when (i.e., temporal distance) using scalp EEG from 47 healthy participants (age 21-30, 26 male and 21 female). First, we found that all three components commonly showed a positive correlation between cognitive distance and slow theta power (2.5-5 Hz) in parietal channels. Meanwhile, fast theta power (5-8.5 Hz) specifically represented spatial and temporal distance in occipital and parietal channels, respectively. Additionally, we identified a unique correlate of temporal distance coding in frontal/parietal slow theta power during the early phase of retrieval. All of the above neural markers of cognitive mapping, both domain-general and specific, were associated with individual differences in what, where, and when memory accuracy.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT The Cognitive Map Theory was originally founded to explain how we remember and organize the immense amount of spatial information that we face when we navigate. However, memory research has recently trended in the direction of emphasizing the generalizability of cognitive mapping mechanisms to information in any domain, represented as distances in an abstract conceptual space. In a single study, we show that both common and unique neural coding of semantic distance (i.e., what), spatial distance (i.e., where), and temporal distance (i.e., when) simultaneously support episodic memory retrieval. Our results suggest that our ability to accurately distinguish between memories is achieved through an integration of domain-specific and domain-general neurocognitive mechanisms that work in parallel.

The prefrontal cortex (PFC) has been extensively studied in relation to various cognitive abilities, including executive function, attention, and memory. Nevertheless, there is a gap in our scientific knowledge regarding the functionally dissociable neural dynamics across the PFC during a cognitive task and their individual differences in performance. Here, we explored this possibility using a delayed match-to-sample (DMTS) working memory (WM) task using NIRSIT, a high-density, wireless, wearable functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) system. First, upon presentation of the sample stimulus, we observed an immediate signal increase in the ventral (orbitofrontal) region of the anterior PFC, followed by activity in the dorsolateral PFC. After the DMTS test stimulus appeared, the orbitofrontal cortex activated once again, while the rest of the PFC showed overall disengagement. Individuals with higher accuracy showed earlier and sustained activation of the PFC across the trial. Furthermore, higher network efficiency and functional connectivity in the PFC were correlated with individual WM performance. Our study sheds new light on the dynamics of PFC subregional activity during a cognitive task and its potential applicability in explaining individual differences in experimental, educational, or clinical populations. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Wearable functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) captured dissociable temporal dynamics across prefrontal subregions during a delayed match-to-sample task. Anterior regions of the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) activated first during the delay period, followed by the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (PFC). PFC disengaged overall after the delay, but the OFC reactivated to the test stimulus. Earlier and sustained activation of PFC was associated with better accuracy. Functional connectivity and network efficiency also varied with task performance.

INTRODUCTION: Nicotine dependence follows a chronic course that is characterized by repeated relapse, often driven by acute stress and rewarding memories of smoking retrieved from related contexts. These two triggers can also interact, with stress influencing retrieval of contextual memories. However, the roles of these processes in nicotine dependence remain unknown. AIMS AND METHODS: We investigated how acute stress biases memory for smoking-associated contexts among smokers (N = 65) using a novel laboratory paradigm. On day 1, participants formed associations between visual stimuli of items (either neutral or related to smoking) and places (background scenes). On day 2 (24 hours later), participants were exposed to an acute laboratory-based stressor (socially evaluated cold pressor test; N = 32) or a matched control condition (N = 33) prior to being tested on their memory recognition and preferences for each item and place. We distinguished the accuracy of memory into specific (ie, precisely correct) or gist (ie, lure items with similar content) categories. RESULTS: Results demonstrated that the stressor significantly induced physiological and subjective perceived stress responses, and that stressed smokers exhibited a memory bias in favor of smoking-related items. In addition, the stressed group displayed greater preference for both smoking-related items and places that had been paired with the smoking-related items. We also found suggestive evidence that stronger smoking-related memory biases were associated with more severe nicotine dependence (ie, years of smoking). CONCLUSIONS: These results highlight the role of stress in biasing smokers toward remembering contexts associated with smoking, and amplifying their preference for these contexts. IMPLICATIONS: The current study elucidates the role of acute stress in promoting memory biases favoring smoking-related associations among smokers. The results suggest that the retrieval of smoking-biased associative memory could be a crucial factor in stress-related nicotine seeking. This may lead to a potential intervention targeting the extinction of smoking-related context memories as a preventive strategy for stress-induced relapse.

RESUMO

Mandibular condyle fracture malunion and tooth loss can cause functional and esthetic problems. A patient with restricted mouth opening associated with muscle atrophy required prosthetic rehabilitation. Since the remaining teeth had a poor prognosis and the patient had difficulty adapting to the interim denture, complete mouth rehabilitation with implants was chosen. The implants were placed by using nerve lateralization and an autogenous bone graft. Prosthetic rehabilitation combines digital diagnosis and conventional prosthetic restorations. The definitive prosthesis was fabricated to ensure adequate oral hygiene and functional adaptation of the orofacial structures. Treatment resulted in stable masticatory function, occlusion, and esthetics and restored the function of the atrophied lips and restricted mouth opening.

Despite distinct neural representation of what, where, and when information, studies of individual differences in episodic memory have neglected to test the three components separately. Here, we used a componential episodic memory task to measure cognitive profiles across a wide age range and in Alzheimer disease (AD) and to examine the role of theta oscillations in explaining performance. In Experiment 1, we tested a group of 47 young adults (age 21-30 years, 21 women) while recording their scalp EEG. A separate behavioral experiment (Experiment 2) was performed in 42 older adults (age 66-85 years, 29 women) and in a group of 16 AD patients (age 80-90 years, 12 women). In Experiment 1, K-means clustering based on behavioral data resulted in three "cognotypes" whose memory profiles showed corresponding differences in their EEG markers: What and where memory depended on frontal theta power and when memory depended on theta modulation by temporal distance between retrieved items. In Experiment 2, healthy older adults showed three cognotypes similar to those found in younger adults; moreover, AD patients had an overlapping profile with one specific cognotype, characterized by marked difficulties in when memory. These findings highlight the utility of componential episodic memory tests and cognotyping in understanding individual strengths and vulnerabilities in age-related neurocognitive decline.

The disruption of thyroid hormones because of chemical exposure is a significant societal problem. Chemical evaluations of environmental and human health risks are conventionally based on animal experiments. However, owing to recent breakthroughs in biotechnology, the potential toxicity of chemicals can now be evaluated using 3D cell cultures. In this study, the interactive effects of thyroid-friendly soft (TS) microspheres on thyroid cell aggregates are elucidated and their potential as a reliable toxicity assessment tool is evaluated. Using state-of-the-art characterization methods coupled with cell-based analysis and quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry, it is shown that TS-microsphere-integrated thyroid cell aggregates exhibit improved thyroid function. Specifically, the responses of zebrafish embryos, which are used for thyroid toxicity analysis, and the TS-microsphere-integrated cell aggregates to methimazole (MMI), a known thyroid inhibitor, are compared. The results show that the thyroid hormone disruption response of the TS-microsphere-integrated thyroid cell aggregates to MMI is more sensitive compared with those of the zebrafish embryos and conventionally formed cell aggregates. This proof-of-concept approach can be used to control cellular function in the desired direction and hence evaluate thyroid function. Thus, the proposed TS-microsphere-integrated cell aggregates may yield new fundamental insights for advancing in vitro cell-based research.

Antibiotic pollution is an emerging environmental challenge. Residual antibiotics from various sources, including municipal and industrial wastewater, sewage discharges, and agricultural runoff, are continuously released into freshwater environments, turning them into reservoirs that contribute to the development and spread of antibiotic resistance. Thus, it is essential to understand the impacts of antibiotic residues on aquatic organisms, especially microalgae and cyanobacteria, due to their crucial roles as primary producers in the ecosystem. This review summarizes the effects of antibiotics on major biological processes in freshwater microalgae and cyanobacteria, including photosynthesis, oxidative stress, and the metabolism of macromolecules. Their adaptive mechanisms to antibiotics exposure, such as biodegradation, bioadsorption, and bioaccumulation, are also discussed. Moreover, this review highlights the important factors affecting the antibiotic removal pathways by these organisms, which will promote the use of microalgae-based technology for the removal of antibiotics. Finally, we offer some perspectives on the opportunities for further studies and applications.

Our minds are constantly in transit, from the present to the past to the future, across places we have and have not directly experienced. Nevertheless, memories of our mental time travel are not organized continuously and are adaptively chunked into contexts and episodes. In this paper, I will review evidence that suggests that spatial boundary representations play a critical role in providing structure to both our spatial and temporal memories. I will illustrate the intimate connection between hippocampal spatial mapping and temporal sequencing of episodic memory to propose that high-level cognitive processes like mental time travel and conceptual mapping are rooted in basic navigational mechanisms that we humans and nonhuman animals share. Our neuroscientific understanding of hippocampal function across species may provide new insight into the origins of even the most uniquely human cognitive abilities.

A novel Gram-stain-negative, aerobic and rod-shaped bacterial strain, HBC54T, was isolated from periphyton during a Microcystis bloom. Based on the results of the 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain HBC54T was closely related to Novosphingobium aerophilum 4Y4T (98.36 %), Novosphingobium aromaticivorans DSM 12444T (98.08 %), Novosphingobium huizhouense c7T (97.94 %), Novosphingobium percolationis c1T (97.65 %), Novosphingobium subterraneum DSM 12447T (97.58 %), Novosphingobium olei TW-4T (97.58 %) and Novosphingobium flavum UCT-28T (97.37 %). The average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between HBC54T and its related type stains were below 78.97 and 23.7 %, which are lower than the threshold values for species delineation. The major fatty acids (>10.0 %) were identified as C14 : 0 2-OH, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c and/or C16 : 1 ω6c) and summed feature 8 (C18 : 1 ω7c and/or C18 : 1 ω6c) and the respiratory quinone was ubiquinone Q-10. The main polar lipids detected in the strain were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, diphosphatidylglycerol and three unidentified phospholipids. The genomic DNA G+C content was 64.8 mol%. Strain HBC54T is considered to represent a novel species within the genus Novosphingobium, for which the name Novosphingobium cyanobacteriorum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HBC54T (=KCTC 92033T=LMG 32427T).

BACKGROUND: Simple biochemical and anthropometric measurements such as fasting blood glucose (FBG), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), waist circumference (WC), and body mass index (BMI) are used to formulate insulin resistance (IR) indices. Whether these indices provide new predictive information for mortality remains unknown. This study examined the relationships of biochemical, anthropometric, and IR indices with mortality risk, as well as their predictive performance. METHODS: The data source was the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (2004-2020) involving 114,957 participants whose data were linked to death records. The IR indices- triglyceride-glucose index (TyG), TyG-BMI, TyG-WC, visceral adiposity index (VAI), lipid accumulation product (LAP), and metabolic score for insulin resistance (METS-IR) were computed using standard formulae. The associations were examined using restricted cubic splines. The predictive performance was compared using the log-likelihood ratio chi-square test. RESULTS: Body mass index was U-shaped, HDL-C was reverse J-shaped, and FBG and TG levels were J-shaped associated with all-cause mortality. Results showed U-shaped (TyG), J-shaped (TyG-BMI, VAI, LAP, and METS-IR), and reverse J-shaped (TyG-WC) associations with all-cause mortality. The percentages of new predictive information for all-cause mortality explained by the FBG level, BMI, TyG-BMI, and METIR were 3.34%, 2.33%, 1.47%, and 1.37%, respectively. Other IR indices and biochemical and anthropometric measurements provided < 1.0% of new predictive information. For cardiovascular disease mortality, the FBG, BMI, METIR, TyG-BMI, and HDL-C levels explained 2.57%, 2.12%, 1.59%, 1.30%, and 1.27% of new predictive information respectively. Moreover, the risks of cancer mortality explained by FBG level, VAI, and HDL-C level were 2.05%, 1.49%, and 1.28%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Fasting blood glucose level is a superior predictor of mortality risk and may be used as a simple predictive and preventative factor.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) after kidney transplantation (KT) is a serious complication and a significant risk factor for graft failure. However, there is no clear evidence of the effectiveness of pre-transplant treatment using plasmapheresis (PP) or rituximab in preventing post-operative FSGS recurrence after KT. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study included 99 adult patients with biopsy-proven primary FSGS who underwent KT between 2007 and 2018. The patients were divided into the pre-treatment group (N = 53, 53.5%) and no pre-treatment group (N = 46, 46.5%). In the pre-transplant group, prophylactic PP was administered before KT in patients undergoing living donor transplantation and the day after KT in those undergoing deceased donor transplantation. RESULTS: The rate of immediate post-operative recurrence was significantly higher in the no pre-treatment group (16 [34.8%]) than in the pre-treatment group (5 [9.4%]; P = 0.002). There were three cases of graft failure due to recurrent FSGS, all of which were in the no pre-treatment group. After adjusting for possible confounding factors, age (per 10-year increase; OR = 0.61, CI, 0.42-0.90; P = 0.012) and pre-transplant treatment (vs. no pre-transplant treatment; OR = 0.17, CI, 0.05-0.54; P = 0.003) were identified as significant factors associated with FSGS recurrence. The rate of death-censored graft survival was significantly superior in the pretransplant treatment group (P = 0.042). CONCLUSION: Pre-transplant treatment with PP was associated with beneficial effects on preventing FSGS recurrence after KT.

The National Cancer Screening Program of South Korea for cervical cancer was expanded from women aged ≥30 years to women aged ≥20 years in 2016. This study investigated the effect of this policy on occurrence rates of cervical dysplasia, carcinoma in situ, and cervical cancer in women in their twenties. The National Health Information Database for the years 2012-19 was used. The outcome measures were monthly occurrence rates of cervical dysplasia, cervical carcinoma in situ, and cervical cancer. An interrupted time series analysis was performed to investigate whether the number of occurrences changed after policy implementation. For cervical dysplasia, a pre-intervention decreasing trend of 0.3243 per month (P-value < .0001) was found. The post-intervention trend did not differ significantly, although the slope increased at a rate of 0.4622 per month (P-value < .0001). For carcinoma in situ, a trend of increase at 0.0128 per month (P-value = .0099) was seen before policy implementation. The post-intervention trend did not escalate, but the slope showed an increasing trend of 0.0217 per month (P-value < .0001). For cervical cancer, no significant trend was present before intervention. Occurrences of cervical cancer escalated at a rate of 0.0406 per month (P-value < .0001) after policy implementation, and the slope also showed an increasing trend at a rate of 0.0394 per month (P-value < .0001). Expanding the target population for cervical cancer screening increased detection rates for cervical cancer in women aged between 20 and 29 years.

BACKGROUND: Ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (rAAA) is a serious complication of abdominal aortic aneurysm associated with high operative mortality and morbidity rates. The present study evaluated the perioperative and long-term outcomes of Korean patients with rAAA based on national health insurance claims data. METHODS: The National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) database was searched retrospectively to identify patients with rAAA who underwent endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) and open surgical repair (OSR) from 2009 to 2018. Perioperative (≤ 30 days), early postoperative (≤ 3 month), and long-term (> 3 month) survival, reinterventions, and complications were assessed. RESULTS: The search identified 1,034 patients with rAAA, including 594 who underwent EVAR and 440 who underwent OSR. When the study period was divided into two, the total numbers of patients with rAAA, patients who underwent EVAR, and octogenarians were higher during the second half. The perioperative mortality rate was 29.8% in the EVAR and 35.0% in the OSR group (P = 0.028). Hartmann's procedure for bowel infarction was performed more frequently in the OSR than in the EVAR group (adjusted odds ratio, 6.28; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.33-21.84; P = 0.001), but other complication rates did not differ significantly. All-cause mortality during the entire observation period did not differ significantly in the EVAR and OSR groups (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.17; 95% CI, 0.98-1.41; P = 0.087). Abdominal aortic aneurysm-related reintervention rate was significantly lower in the OSR group (adjusted hazard ratio, 0.31; 95% CI, 0.14-0.70; P = 0.005). CONCLUSION: Although EVAR showed somewhat superior perioperative outcomes for rAAA, the long-term outcomes of EVAR after excluding initial 3 months were significantly worse than OSR. When anatomically feasible for both treatments, the perioperative mortality risk and reasonable prospects of long-term survival should be considered in rAAA.

Few studies have investigated the association between high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) level and site-specific cancer mortality. In this study, we aimed to examine the associations of hsCRP with overall and site-specific cancer mortality among South Koreans using data on the Health Examinees (HEXA) Study cohort (41,070 men and 81,011 women aged ≥40 years). We obtained mortality information from the National Statistical Office of Korea, which provided the dates and causes of all deaths occurring through December 31, 2015, by linking mortality data with each participant's unique national identifier. Cox proportional hazards and restricted cubic spline models were used to assess the association between hsCRP and cancer mortality with adjustment for covariates. An analysis of site-specific cancer mortality was focused on 5 major cancers (lung, liver, gastric, colorectal, and breast/prostate). Median hsCRP levels were 0.77 mg/L and 0.59 mg/L for men and women, respectively. A dose-response association between hsCRP and overall cancer mortality was observed in men but disappeared in women after exclusion of deaths occurring in the first 1 or 2 years of follow-up. Elevated hsCRP levels increased the risks of lung, liver, and gastric cancer mortality in men, but the risks of colorectal and breast cancer mortality were not increased. The dose-response association between hsCRP and cancer mortality was observed differently depending on site-specific cancer mortality by sex.

This study presents a unique 3D culture platform that features bioinspired strands of electrospun nanofibers (BSeNs) and aquatic cell lines to compensate for shortcomings in the current cell spheroid generation techniques. The use of BSeNs in 3D zebrafish liver cell cultures is found to improve liver and reproductive functions through spheroid-based in vitro assays such as whole transcriptome sequencing and reproductive toxicity testing, with optimized properties exhibiting results similar to those obtained for fish embryo acute toxicity (FET, OECD TG 236) following exposure to environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals (17ß-Estradiol (E2), 4-hydroxytamoxifen (4-HT), and bisphenol compounds (bisphenol A (BPA) and 9,9-Bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)fluorene (BPFL)). These findings indicate that the beneficial effects of bioinspired materials that closely mimic ECM environments can yield efficient zebrafish cells with intrinsic functions and xenobiotic metabolism similar to those of zebrafish embryos. As a closer analog for the in vivo conditions that are associated with exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals, the straightforward culture model introduced in this study shows promise as an alternative tool that can be used to further eco-environmental assessment.

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped bacterial strain DH6T was isolated from fresh water of the Daechung Reservoir during the Microcystis bloom period. The strain grew at pH 6.0-8.5, at temperature 17-40 °C, and at 0-1% (w/v) NaCl concentration. Comparison of 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain DH6T exhibits the highest similarity with Panacibacter ginsenosidivorans Gsoil 1550T (96.6%). The average nucleotide identity (ANI), digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH), and average amino acid identity (AAI) values of strain DH6T compared to its related type strains were below 74.2%, 22.3%, and 74.8%, respectively. The predominant fatty acids (> 5.0%) were identified as iso-C17:0 3-OH, iso-C13:0, iso-C15:0, C17:0 2-OH, iso-C11:0, anteiso-C13:0, and iso-C15:1 G. The polar lipid profile contained phosphatidylethanolamine, four unidentified aminolipids, and three unidentified lipids. The respiratory quinone was menaquinone 7 (MK-7). The genomic DNA G + C content was 42.6%. Collectively, strain DH6T should be classified as a novel species within the genus Panacibacter, for which the name Panacibacter microcysteis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DH6T (= KCTC 82471T = LMG 32426T).

Children's spatial mapping starts out particularly sensitive to 3D wall-like boundaries and develops over early childhood to flexibly include other boundary types. This study investigated whether spatial boundaries influence children's episodic memory, as in adults, and whether this effect is modulated by boundary type. Eighty-one Korean children (34 girls, 36-84 months old) re-enacted a sequence of three discrete hiding events within a space containing one of three boundaries: 3D wall, aligned objects, or 2D line. Children's memory of events occurring on one side of the boundary developed earlier than those that crossed the boundary. At first, this interaction only applied to the 3D wall and extended to other boundary types with age, suggesting that children's changing spatial representations influence their episodic memory development.

Several phenol derivatives are suspected endocrine disruptors and have received attention in risk assessment studies for several decades owing to the structural similarity between estrogens and phenolic compounds. We assessed the endocrine disrupting effect of the phenolic compound para-phenylphenol (PPP) through acute tests and evaluating chronic endpoints in an invertebrate model, Daphnia magna. Exposure of D. magna to PPP induced substantial adverse effects, namely, reduced fecundity, slowed growth rate, delayed first brood, and a reduction in neonate size. Furthermore, we investigated the mRNA expression of relevant genes to elucidate the mechanism of endocrine disruption by PPP. Exposure of D. magna to PPP induced the substantial downregulation of genes and markers related to reproduction and development, such as EcR-A, EcR-B, Jhe, and Vtg. Consequently, we demonstrated that PPP has an endocrine disrupting effect on reproduction and development in D. magna.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to examine the lifestyle characteristics of hypertensive patients and to investigate the association between the duration of hypertension and lifestyle characteristics. METHODS: A total 16,508 adults (including 5,933 hypertensive patients) aged 20 years and older who participated in the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2016-2018 were analyzed. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the association between the duration of hypertension and lifestyle factors. RESULTS: The longer duration of hypertension was associated with lower risk of drinking in men (odds ratio [OR], 0.78; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.66-0.93), and this observation remained when participants with hypertension for ≥ 13 years were compared to those with hypertension for < 1 year (OR, 0.57; 95% CI, 0.37-0.88). On the other hand, increased duration of hypertension increased the odds of engaging in high physical activity (PA) in women (OR, 1.72; 95% CI, 1.15-2.56), particularly in men with hypertension for 6-12 years (OR, 1.66; 95% CI, 1.03-2.69) and women with hypertension for ≥ 13 years (OR, 3.64; 95% CI, 1.38-9.62). CONCLUSION: In conclusion, adoption and maintenance of healthy lifestyle habits, particularly drinking cessation in men, and PA in both men and women was observed, and differences were observed depending on the duration of hypertension.

BACKGROUND: The improvement in the survival rate of preterm infants has paradoxically raised the risk of morbidities in childhood. Our objectives were to assess the medical utilization and costs in preterm infants following discharge from the neonatal intensive care unit in the first 6 years of life. METHODS: We conducted a population-based study using the National Health Information Database (2011-2017) provided by the Korean National Health Insurance Service (NHIS). A total of 361,190 children born in Korea between January 1 and December 31, 2011 were divided into four groups according to the gestational age at birth: extremely preterm (less than 28 weeks), very preterm (28-31 weeks), moderate to late preterm (32-36 weeks), and full term (37-41 weeks). The cumulative number of outpatient visits, cumulative length of hospital stay, rate of hospital and intensive care unit admissions, and cumulative medical costs for inpatients and outpatients were compared for each gestational age group. RESULTS: Earlier gestational age was significantly associated with an increased risk of the cumulative number of outpatient visits, cumulative length of hospital stay, and rate of hospital and intensive care unit admissions for the first 6 years of life. The mean cumulative inpatient and outpatient costs per child significantly decreased with increasing gestational age. When assessed based on population size, the total cumulative medical costs were highest for moderate to late preterm children. CONCLUSION: Earlier gestational age was strongly associated with increased healthcare resource utilization and medical costs. Our findings on the potential long-term socioeconomic impact on public health are expected to aid the development of future health care policies for preterm children.
