Background and Objectives: Diabetes can cause various vascular complications. The Compounded Danshen-Dripping-Pill (CDDP) is widely used in China. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness and safety of CDDP in the blood viscosity (BV) with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Materials and Methods: We conducted a systematic search of seven databases from their inception to July 2022 for randomized controlled trials that used CDDP to treat T2DM. To evaluate BV, we measured low shear rate (LSR), high shear rate (HSR), and plasma viscosity (PV). Homocysteine and adiponectin levels were also assessed as factors that could affect BV. Results: We included 18 studies and 1532 patients with T2DM. Meta-analysis revealed that CDDP significantly reduced LSR (mean difference [MD] -2.74, 95% confidence interval [CI] -3.77 to -1.72), HSR (MD -0.86, 95% CI -1.08 to -0.63), and PV (MD -0.37, 95% CI -0.54 to -0.19) compared to controls. CDDP also reduced homocysteine (MD -8.32, 95% CI -9.05 to -7.58), and increased plasma adiponectin (MD 2.72, 95% CI 2.13 to 3.32). Adverse events were reported less frequently in the treatment groups than in controls. Conclusions: CDDP is effective in reducing BV on T2DM. However, due to the poor design and quality of the included studies, high-quality, well-designed studies are required in the future.

Background and Objectives: Migraine headaches are chronic neurological diseases that reduce the quality of life by causing severe headaches and autonomic nervous system dysfunction, such as facial flushing, nasal stuffiness, and sweating. Their major treatment methods include medication and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT has been used for pain treatment and various psychogenic neurological diseases by reducing pain, disability, and emotional disorders caused by symptoms of mental illness and improving the understanding of mental health. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of CBT in treating migraines. Materials and Methods: Seven electronic databases were searched from the date of inception to December 2020. Randomized controlled studies (RCTs) using CBT as an intervention for migraine were included. The primary outcome of this study was to determine the frequency of migraines and the intensity of migraines on Visual Analog Scale (VAS), the frequency of drug use, Migraine Disability Assessment (MIDAS), and Headache Impact Test (HIT-6) index. The two authors independently conducted the data extraction and quality assessment of the included RCTs, and conducted meta-analysis with RevMan V.5.4. Results: Among the 373 studies, 11 RCTs were included in this systematic review. Seven out of the 11 RCTs were conducted in the USA, and four were conducted in the UK, Germany, Iran, and Italy, respectively. Headache frequency and MIDAS scores were statistically significant reduced. In the subgroup analysis, headache strength was significantly reduced. Two of the included studies reported adverse effects, including worsening of migraine intensity and frequency, respiratory symptoms, and vivid memory of a traumatic event. Conclusions: CBT for migraine effectively reduced headache frequency and MIDAS score in meta-analysis and headache intensity subgroup analysis, with few adverse events. Additional RCTs with CBT for migraine headaches are needed for a more accurate analysis.

This study describe the characteristics of hemiplegic stroke gait with principal component analysis (PCA) of trunk movement (TM) and gait event (GE) parameters by the inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors: (1) Background: This process can determine dominant variables through multivariate examination to identify the affected, unaffected, and healthy lower-limb sides; (2) Methods: The study monitored forty patients with stroke and twenty-eight healthy individuals comprising the control group for comparison. The IMU sensors were attached to each subject while performing a 6 m walking test. Sixteen variables extracted from the measured data were divided into 7 GE and 9 TM variables explaining pelvis tilt, oblique, and rotation. (3) Results: The tilt range variables of the trunk movement on the affected and unaffected sides were lower than those of the healthy side; this showed between-group differences in various GE variables. For the healthy and affected sides, 80% of variances were explained with 2 or 3 PCs involving only a few dominant variables; and (4) Conclusions: The difference between each side leg should be considered during the development of a diagnosis method. This research can be utilized to develop functional assessment tools for personalized treatment and to design appropriate training protocols.

[Purpose] This study used electromyography to measure the effective treatment duration of interferential current therapy for muscle fatigue. [Subjects and Methods] Fifteen healthy adult men volunteered to participate in the study (age: 24.2 ± 1.3 years; weight: 67.6 ± 4.92 kg; height: 176.4 ± 4.92 cm). All subjects performed 5 min of isometric back extension exercise to produce muscle fatigue, and were then treated with interferential current therapy for 15 min, with electromyography monitoring (treatment group). After sufficient rest, the exercise was repeated for 5 min and an electromyography signal was acquired for 15 min with no treatment (control group). [Results] In the treatment group, the median frequency shifted to a higher level; the root mean square decreased over time, and then maintained a minimum amplitude. However, there were few changes in the electromyography signal after exercise in the control group. [Conclusion] Electromyography signals can provide information about the effective duration for muscle fatigue treatment as well as the muscle characteristics during treatment. This study should be helpful for clinicians by demonstrating the appropriate duration of therapy for relief of muscle stiffness.

Recently, high-intensity laser therapy (HILT) has been introduced for muscle disorders, but its efficacy has not been confirmed due to the absence of quantitative assessments and treatment feedback data in real-time. In this clinical study, a theragnostic optical system comprised of a high-intensity laser and a non-invasive optical monitoring system was developed to assess spasticity. To avoid interference between the two different light sources, the therapeutic wavelength for HILT was selected at 808 nm, one of the isosbestic points. The monitoring system based on a near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was utilized for measuring hemoglobin concentrations according to a modified Beer-Lambert's law. The transitory HILT effect was evaluated from patients experiencing spasticity after stroke. Our results showed the proportionate relationship between manual muscle testing grades and the HILT effect on hemiplegic patients. The developed system proved to be useful for the simultaneous assessment and treatment of spasticity, and it holds promise for real-time monitoring of hemoglobin concentrations during laser therapy.

[Purpose] The present study examined whether electro-acupuncture therapy reduces post-stroke depression (PSD) and whether motor function impairments interact with the effects of the therapy. [Subjects] Twenty-eight PSD patients were assessed and assigned to either a good or poor motor function group depending on their motor grade. [Methods] The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) and Manual Muscle Test (MMT) were administered at the screening and initial phases of the study, and at the 4th, 8th, 12th and 16th week of the daily electro-acupuncture treatment. [Results] The electro-acupuncture treatment reduced PSD (as assessed by BDI and HDRS) of the patients. In particular, the depression of the good motor function group was significantly more reduced than that of the poor motor function group. The degree of motor function impairment did not change throughout the study in either group. [Conclusion] The results of the present study demonstrate that electro-acupuncture therapy can improve PSD, and that the treatment effect varies depending on the degree of motor function impairment.

RATIONALE: Sedative-hypnotic drugs (SHDs) used for insomnia are recommended for short-term use owing to concerns regarding abuse and dependence. Nevertheless, drug discontinuation is challenging owing to rebound insomnia that occurs when the SHD is ceased. Therefore, a strategy is required to reduce or discontinue SHDs, while minimizing rebound insomnia. PATIENT CONCERNS: The present report discusses the cases of a 72-year-old man and 27-year-old man with insomnia. Both patients had been taking SHDs for more than 2 months. DIAGNOSES: Both patients were diagnosed with primary insomnia. INTERVENTIONS AND OUTCOMES: After 2 weeks of classical conditioning (CC) using Hwangryunhaedok-tang (HHT), both patients succeeded in tapering SHD; the Korean version of the insomnia severity index of patient 1 dropped from 14 to 5, and that of patient 2 dropped from 28 to 11. In the final follow-up, the index dropped to 2 and 3, respectively. LESSONS: The CC, a concept emerging in psychology, could be a new strategy for tapering drugs. In this case, SHDs, which had been taken for a long time, were successfully reduced or discontinued through CC using HHT. Herbal medicine such as HHT is selected as a neutral stimulus for CC because the risk of rebound phenomenon is low as the compounds of herbal medicine have high structural similarities with human metabolites. Both patients in this study reported no particular challenges when HHT was discontinued. However, further studies are needed that will assist in tapering anticonvulsants or steroids as well as SHDs.

OBJECTIVE: This study used 2010-2018 Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service National Patient Sample data to analyse the distribution and healthcare utilisation of patients with migraine in South Korea. DESIGN: Retrospective, observational study using serial cross-sectional data. PARTICIPANTS: Patients with primary diagnosis of G43, a Korean Standard Classification of Diseases-10 code for migraine, were included in the analysis. The exclusion criteria were missing code information; code for dental, health centre or psychiatry; institution type specified as nursing hospital, psychiatric hospital, dental hospital, midwifery centre or health centre; blank entries for total cost or days of care. 453 246 records of patients and 117 157 patients corresponding to those records were identified. OUTCOME MEASURES: Primary outcome measures were medical service utilisation status, treatment methods and drug use status associated with migraine. RESULTS: Cases and patients of migraine increased from 48 846 and 19 468 (2010) to 52 729 and 20 802 (2018), respectively, increases of 7.95% and 6.85%, respectively, compared with 2010. Total cost of care increased from $921 857.88 (2010) to $1 711 219.60 (2018). The most common age range of patients was 45-54 years, with 2.69 times more female than male patients. In Western medicine hospitals, subcutaneous or intramuscular injection therapy was used frequently, while in Korean medicine hospitals, acupuncture therapy was used. Among Western medicine outpatients, more than 50% of the therapeutics prescribed for acute migraine were simple analgesics or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The number of prescriptions for the prevention of episodic migraine increased from 13 600 cases (2010) to 20 546 cases (2018), representing the steepest increase in drug utilisation. CONCLUSIONS: Treatments frequently used in Western and Korean medicine hospitals and their frequency of use and costs were identified. The findings of this study can be used as a basis for relevant health policy decisions.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to compare shoulder movement measurements between a Kinect-based markerless ROM assessment device (POM-Checker) and a 3D motion capture analysis system (BTS SMART DX-400). METHODS: This was a single-visit clinical trial designed to evaluate the validity and reliability of the POM-Checker. The primary outcome was to assess the equivalence between two measurement devices within the same set of participants, aiming to evaluate the validity of the POM-Checker compared to the gold standard device (3D Motion Analysis System). As this was a pilot study, six participants were included. RESULTS: The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to assess the reproducibility of the measurements. Among the 18 movements analyzed, 16 exhibited ICC values of >0.75, indicating excellent reproducibility. CONCLUSION: The results showed that the POM-checker is reliable and validated to measure the range of motion of the shoulder joint.

Background: With the increasing work-related musculoskeletal disorders, neck and shoulder pain among office workers has also increased. That said, this randomized controlled trial aimed to seek the potential effects of a massage chair (BFR-M8040) on neck and shoulder pain among office workers. Methods: This was conducted at the Wonkwang University Gwangju Medical Center from April 2022 to December 2022. Sixty adult participants were randomly allocated. The mean age of male participants was 39.63 ± 8.09 years while female participants was 43.52 ± 8.27; women participated the most (86.67%). The control group received basic physical treatments, including a 10-min heat treatment for deep regions and a 10-min hot pack for the areas on the neck and shoulder of the complained discomfort. The experimental group received the same treatment as the control group and added 20 min of the electric massage chair's PEMF Neck Mode (XD module 3) (BFR-M8040, Bodyfriend Co., Ltd.). The participants received treatments twice per week. The primary outcome was measured using the numerical rating scale and the Korean version of the neck disability index. And the secondary outcome was measured using pressure pain threshold, range of motion, the Korean occupational stress scale, the Korean version of the Euro-quality of life-5 dimension, and safety evaluation. Results: Fifty-eight participants completed a 6-week follow-up and analyzed (29 in the control group and 29 in the experimental group). There was a significant decrease in the experiment group in both scales for primary outcome measures. For secondary outcome measures, statistically significant increases were observed in pressure pain threshold. The experimental group only showed a slight increase in the quality-of-life measures. There were no reported adverse events. Conclusion: The benefit of using a massage chair (BFR-M8040) was verified to alleviate neck and shoulder pain among office workers; future studies could involve participants from other countries for further investigation.

Objectives: To confirm the characteristics of gait events and muscle activity in the lower limbs of the affected and unaffected sides in patients with hemiplegia. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Motion analysis laboratory of the Wonkwang University Gwangju Hospital. Participants: Outpatients, diagnosed with ischemic stroke more than 3 months and less than 9 months before participating in the study (N=29; 11 men, 18 women). Interventions: Not applicable. Main Outcome Measures: The gait event parameters and time- and frequency-domain electromyogram (EMG) parameters of the lower limbs of the affected and unaffected sides was determined using BTS motion capture with the Delsys Trigno Avanti EMG wireless system. Results: The swing time, stance phase, swing phase, single support phase, and median power frequency of the gastrocnemius muscle showed a significant difference between the affected and unaffected sides. Using a logistic regression model, the swing phase, single support phase, and median frequency of the gastrocnemius muscle were selected to classify the affected side. Conclusion: The single support phase of the affected side is shortened to reduce load bearing, which causes a reduction in the stance phase ratio. Unlike gait-event parameters, EMG data of hemiplegic stroke patients are difficult to generalize. Among them, the logistic regression model with some affected side parameters expected to be set as the severity and improvement baseline of the affected side. Additional data collection and generalization of muscle activity is required to improve the classification model.

INTRODUCTION: Even if levodopa, dopamine agonists, and others are used for patients with Parkinson's disease, the effect is not sustained, and side effects such as motor fluctuation and dyskinesia are more likely to appear as the dose increases. Thus, new approaches for managing Parkinson's disease are needed. This study aimed to compare the metabolites and gut microbes between patients with Parkinson's disease and healthy individuals. METHODS: This was an observational study with a case-control design. Metabolite and gut microbial analyses were performed using blood and stool samples collected from the subjects. RESULTS: Among the metabolites, the acetate, citrate, methionine, and trimethylamine levels were significantly different between the two groups. In the gut microbes, abundance of Bacteroidetes, Prevotella, Phascolarctobacterium, Pseudoflavonifractor, Eisenbergiella, and Gemella were also significantly different between the two groups. DISCUSSION: Metabolites are the products of gut microbes. Therefore, when the gut microbes change, the metabolites change accordingly. Metabolites and gut microbes that were significantly different between the two groups were mostly those involved in lipid and glucose metabolism. Our data may be helpful for the development of new drugs targeting metabolites and gut microbes through large-scale studies in the future.

Background: Migraine is a relatively common disease that has a significant effect on the daily activities of affected individuals. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of herbal medicine (Jodeungsan, JDS) on migraine. Methods: Sixty-four patients with migraine were recruited and randomized to either the JDS or placebo group at a 1:1 ratio. The subjects received JDS or placebo daily for four weeks. The primary outcome was a change in the number of headache attack days (HADs), and the secondary outcome measures were the headache impact test (HIT), migraine-specific quality of life (MSQoL), the deficiency and excess pattern identification questionnaire (DEPIQ), the cold and heat pattern identification questionnaire (CHPIQ), and the blood stasis pattern questionnaire (BSPQ). Results: In all, 61 of the 64 patients took the investigational drugs for four weeks. The number of HADs did not significantly differ between the JDS and placebo groups at the end of the study. However, the HIT and MSQoL results showed significant improvement over the baseline in both groups. Conclusion: JDS did not have a significant effect on chronic migraine. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an intractable disease associated with high morbidity and healthcare costs. Metabolites and gut microbes are areas of interest for mainstream and complementary and alternative medicine. We, therefore, aimed to contribute to the discovery of an integrative medicine for UC by comparing and analyzing gut microbes and metabolites in patients with UC and in healthy individuals. This was an observational case-control study. Blood and stool samples were collected from the participants, and metabolite and gut microbial studies were performed. Among metabolites, formate, glycolate, trimethylamine, valine, and pyruvate levels were significantly different between the two groups. Among gut microbes, the abundance of Bacteroidetes at the phylum level; Bacteroidia at the class level; Bacteroidales and Actinomycetales at the order level; Prevotellaceae, Acidaminococcaceae, and Leptotrichiaceae at the family level; and Prevotella, Roseburia, Paraprevotella, Phascolarctobacterium, Ruminococcus, Coprococcus, Clostridium_XIVB, Atopobium, and Leptotrichia at the genus level was also significantly different. Most of the metabolites and gut microbes significantly different between the two groups were involved in energy metabolism and inflammatory processes, respectively. The results of this study could be helpful for the identification of targets for integrative medicine approaches for UC.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal organ injuries are a rarely reported complication when deep acupuncture needling is applied to the abdomen. In order to ascertain the allowable needle insertion range (ANIR) of the abdomen region, we selected acupoint CV12, which is commonly used for treating gastric disease, and ANIR was measured with an ultrasound device. METHOD: Eighty-five healthy volunteers were recruited, of which 83 cases of ultrasound images were obtained. To investigate the prediction factor of ANIR, we also measured several anthropometric factors. RESULTS: The average ANIR was 25.3 ± 10.2; generally, the ANIRs of females were thicker than those of males; and the liver was observed in 62.7% subjects' ultrasound images. The non-observed group showed thicker ANIR and higher BMI than the liver-observed group. CONCLUSION: There are reliable variables that make it possible to predict the ANIR. It is advised to refer to anthropometric factors in needling acupoint CV12 to avoid complications with the acupuncture treatment. However, individual differences are not negligible when applying deep needling. Thus, if the risk is not judged before or during the procedure, practitioners could consider the patient's ANIR on CV12 when applying acupuncture by examining the individual anatomical structures using ultrasound and considering internal organ positions to prevent adverse events due to acupuncture.

Recently, electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) have become serious problems due to the growth of electronic device and next generation telecommunication. It is necessary to develop new electromagnetic wave absorbing material to overcome the limitation of electromagnetic wave shielding materials. The EMI attenuation is normally related to magnetic loss and dielectric loss. Therefore, magnetic material coating dielectric materials are required in this reason. In this study, TiO2 coated Fe nanofibers were prepared to improve their properties for electromagnetic wave absorption. Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) and Iron (III) nitrate nonahydrate (Fe(NO3)3 x 9H2O) were used as starting materials for the synthesis of Fe oxide nanofibers. Fe oxide nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning in an electric field and heat treatment. TiO2 layer was coated on the surface of Fe oxide nanofibers using sol-gel process. After the reduction of TiO2 coated Fe oxide nanofibers, Fe nanofibers with a TiO2 coating layer of about 10 nm were successfully obtained. The morphology and structure of fibers were characterized by SEM, TEM, and XRD. In addition, the absorption properties of TiO2 coated Fe nanofibers were measured by network analyzer.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is a common reason for primary headache disorders. Cupping is a frequently used traditional intervention for controlling pain including migraine. There have been no systematic reviews on the clinical effects of cupping on migraine. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of cupping therapy for migraine. The search strategy was built for the presence of related keywords, such as "migraine" and "cupping therapy", in the title and abstract of research articles indexed in the MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, and other databases. The randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of cupping therapy for migraine were searched and selected from inception to May 2019. We searched eight databases including PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. The selection process and the quality assessment were performed by 2 authors independently. The meta-analysis was conducted and qualitative analysis was also performed. RESULTS: 218 studies were identified, and 6 RCTs were enrolled in this review. In comparison to drugs, wet cupping showed a higher total effective rate (TER). In the dry cupping plus acupuncture, the result of TER showed more effectiveness (RR 1.05, 95% CI 0.99 to 1.12, P=0.13) compared with acupuncture alone, but there was no statistically significant difference. In qualitative analysis, the results showed wet cupping plus drugs treatment could quickly relieve pain and significantly improve patients' quality of life and wet cupping could reduce headache pain. CONCLUSION: Cupping therapy could be effective for the treatment of migraine. However, the qualities of the evidence were low, so well-designed RCTs are needed to confirm the effectiveness of cupping. ABSTRACT: Gait rehabilitations have been abundantly performed for post-stroke patients, because gait is the most important factor for the return of post-stroke patients to daily life. However, conventional uniform gait rehabilitations tend to be tedious and reduce motivation. The aim of this study was to contribute to the development of personalized rehabilitation of gait by identifying differences in gait recovery pattern according to the paralyzed side of post-stroke patients.The gait analysis was performed on stroke patients who are right-handed and can walk independently. We retrospectively analyzed the results of pelvic movements and displacement of center of pressure (COP) during gait using corresponding equipments. To show the difference of gait recovery pattern according to the paralyzed side, we divided subjects into two groups, right (n = 19) and left (n = 20) hemiparesis group. The measured variables were as follows: tilt, obliquity, and rotation symmetries of pelvis; area, velocity, and lateral symmetry of COP.First, in the left hemiparesis group, obliquity (P < .01) and rotation (P < .01) symmetries of the movement of the pelvis were significantly improved in the follow-up compared to the initial gait analysis. In the right hemiparesis group, tilt (P < .001), obliquity (P < .001), and rotation (P < .05) symmetries were significantly improved in the follow-up compared to the initial gait analysis. Second, COP area and COP velocity values in the follow-up were significantly smaller than those in the initial gait analysis in the left (P < .001, P < .05) and right (P < .001, P < .01) hemiparesis groups. The positive value of lateral symmetry increased, although not a significant difference statistically, as walking ability improved in both groups. In the correlation analysis among variables obtained using Treadmill, there were significant positive linear relationships between the lateral symmetry and the COP area (P < .05), and between the COP velocity and the lateral symmetry (P < .001) of the follow-up gait analysis in the right hemiparesis group.It was confirmed that the gait recovery pattern differs according to the paralyzed side of post-stroke patients and the role of the intact side, such as moving the COP to the intact side, is important for the improvement of gait function in both groups.This study was registered with the Clinical Research Information Service (CRIS) of the Korea National Institute of Health (NIH), Republic of Korea (KCT0002984) and was approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of the WKUGH (WKIRB [2018-25], November 28, 2018).

BACKGROUND: Subacromial impingement syndrome (SIS) is one of the most common causes of shoulder pain, and acupuncture treatment is widely used as treatment. However, no studies have examined image-guided acupuncture for SIS. This study evaluated the effectiveness and safety of low-dose X-ray guided acupuncture (LA) in patients with SIS. METHODS: A total of 54 patients with SIS were randomly allocated to the LA group and the conventional acupuncture (CA) group. Two acupuncture treatment sessions were conducted for a week, and follow up was conducted after three weeks. The primary outcome was pain intensity measured by the visual analogue scale (VAS) during the Neer and Hawkins test. The incidence rate of shoulder impingement sign, the modified Constant-Murley score (CMS) and the Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI) were assessed as other outcomes. All indicators were assessed at baseline and after one week and three weeks. For safety evaluation, adverse events were monitored in both groups. RESULTS: The change in pain during the Neer test after one week from baseline was more significant in the LA group than in the CA group (p=0.008). However, the Hawkins test did not show a difference between the two groups. The incidence rate of shoulder impingement sign and the changes in CMS and SPADI were not significantly different between the two groups at one week, but after three weeks, SPADI was more significantly improved in the LA group (p=0.024). No adverse events were related to this trial. CONCLUSION: LA was more effective than CA in relieving pain and improving function in terms of VAS and SPADI. Considerable evidence indicates that the basolateral complex of the amygdala (BLA) interacts with efferent brain regions in mediating glucocorticoid effects on memory consolidation. Here, we investigated whether glucocorticoid influences on the consolidation of memory for emotionally arousing training depend on functional interactions between the BLA and the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), a brain region involved in higher-order cognitive and affective processing. The glucocorticoid receptor (GR) agonist 11beta,17beta-dihydroxy-6,21-dimethyl-17alpha-pregna-4,6-trien-20yn-3-one (RU 28362) administered unilaterally into the left mPFC of male Sprague Dawley rats immediately after inhibitory avoidance training enhanced 48 h retention performance. An ipsilateral, but not contralateral, lesion of the BLA blocked the memory enhancement. In a second experiment, RU 28362 infused into the mPFC after inhibitory avoidance training increased BLA levels of phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (pErk1/2). Blockade of this pErk1/2 activity in the BLA with the mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase inhibitor PD98059 [2-(2-amino-3-methoxyphenyl)-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one] prevented the memory enhancement, suggesting that GR agonist administration into the mPFC enhances memory consolidation via modulation of BLA activity. Conversely, GR agonist infusions administered into the BLA posttraining increased pErk1/2 levels in the mPFC in regulating memory consolidation. Moreover, as assessed with a two-phase inhibitory avoidance procedure designed to separate modulatory influences on memory of context and footshock, posttraining GR agonist infusions into either the BLA or mPFC enhanced memory of the contextual as well as aversive information acquired during inhibitory avoidance training. These findings indicate that glucocorticoid effects on memory consolidation depend on bidirectional interactions between the BLA and mPFC.
