Process algebra can be considered one of the most practical formal methods for modeling Smart IoT Systems in Digital Twin, since each IoT device in the systems can be considered as a process. Further, some of the algebras are applied to predict the behavior of the systems. For example, PALOMA (Process Algebra for Located Markovian Agents) and PACSR (Probabilistic Algebra of Communicating Shared Resources) process algebras are designed to predict the behavior of IoT Systems with probability on choice operations. However, there is a lack of analytical methods in the algebras to predict the nondeterministic behavior of the systems. Further, there is no control mechanism to handle undesirable nondeterministic behavior of the systems. In order to overcome these limitations, this paper proposes a new process algebra, called dTP-Calculus, which can be used (1) to specify the nondeterministic behavior of the systems with static probability, (2) verify the safety and security requirements of the nondeterministic behavior with probability requirements, and (3) control undesirable nondeterministic behavior with dynamic probability. To demonstrate the feasibility and practicality of the approach, the SAVE (Specification, Analysis, Verification, Evaluation) tool has been developed on the ADOxx Meta-Modeling Platform and applied to a SEMS (Smart Emergency Medical Service) example. In addition, a miniature digital twin system for the SEMS example was constructed and applied to the SAVE tool as a proof of concept for Digital Twin. It shows that the approach with dTP-Calculus on the tool can be very efficient and effective for Smart IoT Systems in Digital Twin.

BACKGROUND: The perfusion index (PI), calculated from the photoplethysmographic waveform, reflects peripheral vasomotor tone. As such, the PI serves as a surrogate for quantitative measures of drug-induced vasoconstriction or vasodilation. This study aimed to compare the effect on the PI of desflurane and sevoflurane at equi-anaesthetic concentrations in patients undergoing single-agent inhalation anaesthesia, where equi-anaesthetic dose was based on the known minimum alveolar concentration of these agents. METHODS: We randomly allocated patients scheduled for arthroscopic knee surgery to receive either desflurane or sevoflurane general anaesthesia after target-controlled induction of anaesthesia with propofol. Anaesthesia was maintained at age-corrected minimum alveolar concentration 1.0, under neuromuscular block (rocuronium). The PI and haemodynamic data were recorded every minute for 35 min after induction of anaesthesia and after standardised nociceptive stimulation. The primary outcome was PI, compared between the groups over time (repeated-measures analysis of variance). Secondary outcomes included MAP and HR. RESULTS: Sixty-nine participants (mean [range] age: 42 yr [19-65 yr]; 49% females) were assigned to either desflurane (n=34) or sevoflurane (n=35). The PI remained higher under desflurane compared with sevoflurane, both before (mean difference [MD]: 3.3; 95% confidence intervals [CIs]: 2.0-4.7; P<0.001) and after tetanic stimulation (MD: 2.8; 95% CI: 2.0-3.7; P<0.001). Higher PI paralleled lower MAP in participants assigned to desflurane anaesthesia (P<0.001), both before (MD: 8 mm Hg; 95% CI: 4-12) and after nociceptive stimulation (MD: 14 mm Hg; 95% CI: 7-22). HR was similar throughout. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that at equipotent doses, desflurane exerts more potent vasodilatory properties and lowers blood pressure by a magnitude potentially associated with harm. BACKGROUND: We report the successful use of allograft-prosthesis composite (APC) and structural femoral head allografting in the bilateral reconstruction of large femoral and tibial uncontained defects during revision total knee arthroplasty (RTKA). CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-year-old female with degenerative arthritis underwent bilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA) using the Press Fit Condylar (PFC) modular knee system at our clinic in March, 1996. At 8 years postoperatively, the patient presented with painful, bilateral varus knees, with swelling, limited passive range of motion (ROM), and severe instability. We treated to reconstruct both knee using a femoral head allograft at the tibial site, a structural distal femoral allograft at the femoral site, and a varus-valgus constrained (VVC) prosthesis with cement. At the 10-year follow up, we found no infection, graft failure, loosening of implants, in spite of using massive bilateral structural femoral head allografts in RTKA. CONCLUSION: The use of APC enabled a stable and durable reconstruction in this uncommon presentation with large femoral bone deficiencies encountered during a RTKA.

Transcription factor AP-2? (TFAP2C) is a member of the transcription factor activating enhancer binding protein (AP) family. In the present study we determined the temporal and spatial expression patterns of TFAP2C in porcine parthenotes during preimplantation development. Porcine TFAP2C transcripts were expressed at all stages of preimplantation development, with highest expression at the 8-cell stage. In contrast with the mouse, TFAP2C protein was not restricted to the trophectoderm and was also detected in the ICM in blastocyst stage porcine parthenotes. In knockdown (KD) experiments, most TFAP2C-depleted embryos were arrested before the compacted 8-cell stage. This developmental failure is attributed to abnormal expression of genes involved in cell adhesion, tight junction biogenesis and cell proliferation. Interestingly, although the conserved region 4 (CR4) of the porcine OCT4 5? upstream regionlacked the AP2C-binding motif, OCT4 transcript levels were elevated in porcine TFAP2C-KD 8-cell embryos, suggesting TFAP2C may be involved in the regulation of OCT4 in porcine embryos through other mechanisms. In summary, the results suggest that TFAP2C is necessary for the transition from de novo transcript synthesis by activation to compaction and further development, and the different expression patterns of TFAP2C in porcine embryos may reflect species-specific functions during preimplantation embryo development.

RESUMO

Scrub typhus is an acute febrile infectious disease caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi. The illness is usually characterized by fever, rash, and lymphadenopathy, but severe cases progress to pulmonary and neurological involvement. We report a 69-year-old man who developed ptosis and ophthalmoplegia with a focal nodular lesion in the anterior cavernous sinus detected with magnetic resonance imaging. Found to have scrub typhus, the ptosis and ophthalmoplegia resolved after treatment with doxycycline.

We proposed a new deep learning (DL) model for accurate scatter correction in digital radiography. The proposed network featured a pixel-wise water equivalent path length (WEPL) map of subjects with diverse sizes and 3D inner structures. The proposed U-Net model comprises two concatenated modules: one for generating a WEPL map and the other for predicting scatter using the WEPL map as auxiliary information. First, 3D CT images were used as numerical phantoms for training and validation, generating observed and scattered images by Monte Carlo simulation, and WEPL maps using Siddon's algorithm. Then, we optimised the model without overfitting. Next, we validated the proposed model's performance by comparing it with other DL models. The proposed model obtained scatter-corrected images with a peak signal-to-noise ratio of 44.24 ± 2.89 dB and a structural similarity index measure of 0.9987 ± 0.0004, which were higher than other DL models. Finally, scatter fractions (SFs) were compared with other DL models using an actual phantom to confirm practicality. Among DL models, the proposed model showed the smallest deviation from measured SF values. Furthermore, using an actual radiograph containing an acrylic object, the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of the proposed model and the anti-scatter grid were compared. The CNR of the images corrected using the proposed model are 16% and 82% higher than those of the raw and grid-applied images, respectively. The advantage of the proposed method is that no actual radiography system is required for collecting training dataset, as the dataset is created from CT images using Monte Carlo simulation.

BACKGROUND: In managing chronic daily headaches (CDH), a comprehensive approach is necessary to evaluate stress, a closely linked factor. However, limited time and costs often lead to the use of a simple stress question in clinical settings. This study aims to assess the validity of using a simple stress question for CDH patients and explore its implications for clinical practice. METHODS: We recruited 103 patients with CDH who completed structured self-administered questionnaires, including a simple stress question ("Have you had any stress or concerns in the last 4 weeks?") and validated Korean versions of questionnaires for depression, anxiety, insomnia, and the Brief Encounter Psychosocial Instrument (BEPSI). A headache specialist conducted clinical interviews. The stress group consisted of patients who acknowledged overt stress (answering "yes" to the simple question) and covert stress (initially answering "no" but later admitting during the interview). Results showed no statistical difference between the subgroups, so they were combined as the "acknowledged stress" group. RESULTS: Out of 103 patients, 54.4% had chronic migraine, 45.6% had chronic tension-type headache, and 66 patients (64.1%) acknowledged experiencing stress. No significant differences were found in demographic and clinical characteristics, BEPSI stress assessment, or depression, anxiety, and insomnia profiles between patients with overt stress (n = 51) and covert stress (n = 15). The average BEPSI score was 2.3 ± 0.9, with 45.6% of patients exceeding the criteria (>2.4). Two (5.4%) patients in denial of stress had scores above the BEPSI criteria. Among patients below the criteria of BEPSI, 21 acknowledged stress, while 35 denied stress, with no significant differences observed. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests the limitations of relying solely on a simple stress question for assessing stress in patients with CDH in clinical practice. It is possible to encounter covert stress, include individuals who do not exhibit noticeable stress, and misclassify stress levels. To overcome these limitations, it is necessary to foster a supportive environment for open communication on stress and implement a comprehensive assessment strategy when needed.

Background: Despite improved outcomes, failure or nonhealing of graft materials has been reported after superior capsular reconstruction (SCR) for massive irreparable rotator cuff tears. Purpose: To evaluate the short-term clinical and radiological outcomes of a novel technique for SCR using an Achilles tendon-bone allograft. Study Design: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. Methods: We performed a retrospective review of patients who underwent SCR using an Achilles tendon-bone allograft with the modified keyhole technique and who had a minimum follow-up of 2 years. The visual analog scale score for pain, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score, and Constant score were evaluated as subjective outcomes, while range of motion of the shoulder joint and isokinetic strength were evaluated as objective outcomes. The acromiohumeral interval (AHI), bone-to-bone healing of the allograft and humeral head on computed tomography, and graft integrity on magnetic resonance imaging were evaluated as radiological outcomes. Results: This study included 32 patients with a mean age of 56.8 ± 4.2 years and a mean follow-up of 28.4 ± 6.2 months. A significant improvement from preoperatively to the last follow-up was seen in the mean visual analog scale score for pain (from 6.7 to 1.8), American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score (from 42.7 to 83.8), Constant score (from 47.2 to 78.5), and AHI (from 4.8 to 8.2 mm) (P < .001 for all) as well as range of motion in forward elevation and internal rotation (P < .001 for both). Medial-to-lateral graft integrity was good in all patients. Nonunion at the fitting zone of the keyhole on the greater tuberosity was diagnosed in 1 case (3.1%), and failure of incorporation between the allograft and remnant tendon at the site of posterior margin convergence was observed in 4 cases (12.5%). Conclusion: The outcomes after SCR using an Achilles tendon-bone allograft and the keyhole technique improved, with an increased AHI and excellent integrity in the medial and lateral directions compared with preoperatively. This technique is a reasonable option for the surgical treatment of irreparable rotator cuff tears.

OBJECTIVES: Reportedly, hippocampal neuronal degeneration by kainic acid (KA)-induced seizures in rats <14 days old was enhanced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). This study was to test the hypothesis that cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α are associated with aggravated neuronal damage. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty male Sprague-Dawley, 14-day-old rats were used. Experiments were conducted in saline, LPS + saline, saline + KA and LPS + KA groups. Intraperitoneal LPS injections (0.04 mg/kg) were administered 3 h prior to KA injection (3 mg/kg). RESULTS: The LPS + KA group showed a tendency toward shorter latency to seizure onset (p = 0.086) and significantly longer seizure duration (p < 0.05) compared with the KA group. Induction of the proconvulsant cytokine IL-1ß in rat pup brains was significantly greater in the LPS + KA group compared to the KA group (38.8 ± 5.5 vs. 9.2 ± 1.0 pg/µg; p < 0.05); however, IL-6 levels were higher in the KA group than in the LPS + KA group (108.7 ± 6.8 vs. 60.9 ± 4.7 pg/µg; p < 0.05). The difference in tumor necrosis factor-α between the LPS + KA group and the KA group was insignificant (12.1 ± 0.6 vs. 10.9 ± 2.3 pg/µg; p = 0.64). CONCLUSIONS: Our results showed an increase in the proconvulsant cytokine IL-1ß and a decrease in a potentially neuroprotective cytokine, IL-6, in rat pups treated with LPS + KA. These results warrant further investigation into the possible role of IL-1ß induction and IL-6 suppression in LPS-promoted neuronal damage.

Signal transducer and activator of transcription-3 (Stat3) plays a central role in interleukin-6 (IL-6)-mediated cell proliferation by inhibiting apoptosis in a variety of cell types. The Stat3 pathway is essential for embryonic development. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of recombinant IL-6 on the viability and development of porcine diploid parthenotes cultured in vitro. Four-cell parthenotes, derived in vitro, were cultured to the blastocyst stage, with or without recombinant IL-6. The addition of 10 or 100 ng/ml of recombinant swine IL-6 into PZM3 medium increased the development rate of parthenotes to the blastocyst stage (P<0.05). When supplemented with 10 ng/ml of recombinant swine IL-6, the number of parthenotes at the blastocyst stage increased (P<0.05) and apoptosis decreased (P<0.05). Real-time RT-PCR experiments revealed that the addition of recombinant swine IL-6 decreased the mRNA expression of the pro-apoptotic gene Caspase3 (P<0.01) but increased the expression levels of the anti-apoptotic genes Bcl2l1 and Survivin. IL-6 receptors and Stat3 mRNA expression were upregulated after treatment with 10 ng/ml recombinant swine IL-6. Immunoblots and fluorescence labeling experiments showed that the levels of phosphorylated Stat3 were upregulated. These results suggest that recombinant swine IL-6 prevents apoptosis of porcine parthenotes and enhances porcine embryo viability through the IL-6/Stat3 signaling pathway in vitro.

Interspecies intracytoplasmic sperm injection has been carried out to understand species-specific differences in oocyte environments and sperm components during fertilization. While sperm aster organization during cat fertilization requires a paternally derived centriole, mouse and hamster fertilization occur within the maternal centrosomal components. To address the questions of where sperm aster assembly occurs and whether complete fertilization is achieved in cat oocytes by interspecies sperm, we studied the fertilization processes of cat oocytes following the injection of cat, mouse, or hamster sperm. Male and female pronuclear formations were not different in the cat oocytes at 6 h following cat, mouse or hamster sperm injection. Microtubule asters were seen in all oocytes following intracytoplasmic injection of cat, mouse or hamster sperm. Immunocytochemical staining with a histone H3-m2K9 antibody revealed that mouse sperm chromatin is incorporated normally with cat egg chromatin, and that the cat eggs fertilized with mouse sperm enter metaphase and become normal 2-cell stage embryos. These results suggest that sperm aster formation is maternally dependent, and that fertilization processes and cleavage occur in a non-species specific manner in cat oocytes.

RESUMO

A novel and effective method was devised for synthesizing a vertically aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) forest on a substrate using waste plastic obtained from commercially available water bottles. The advantages of the proposed method are the speed of processing and the use of waste as a raw material. A mechanism for the CNT growth was also proposed. The growth rate of the CNT forest was ∼2.5 µm min-1. Transmission electron microscopy images indicated that the outer diameters of the CNTs were 20-30 nm on average. The intensity ratio of the G and D Raman bands was 1.27 for the vertically aligned CNT forest. The Raman spectrum showed that the wall graphitization of the CNTs, synthesized via the proposed method was slightly higher than that of commercially available multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). We expect that the proposed method can be easily adapted to the disposal of other refuse materials and applied to MWCNT production industries.

Single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were synthesized using oxygen-containing ferrocene derived catalysts. The mechanism of synthesizing carbon nanotubes was clarified by the catalyst's exothermic or endothermic decomposition processes. By monitoring the decomposition process of ferrocene-derived catalyst precursors with and without sulfur, we found that the types of oxygen function groups closely influence catalyst formation and nanotube growth. The ferrocene-derived catalyst precursors have a different oxygen containing groups, which are hydroxyl (−OH, ferrocenenemethanol) and carbonyl (C=O, acetylferrocene, and 1,1'-diacetylferrocene). The sulfur chemical state (S 2p) on synthesized catalyst particles using acetylferrocene and 1,1'-diacetylferrocene has more sulfate (SO42−) than others, and there also is a carbon state (C-S-C). The catalyst particle using ferrocenemethanol predominant formed metal−sulfur bonds (such as S2− and Sn2−). The hydroxyl group (−OH) of ferrocenemethanol enhanced the etching effect to remove amorphous carbon and prevented oxidation on the catalyst particle surfaces; however, the carbonyl group (C=O) of acetylferrocene reacted with the catalyst particles to cause partial oxidation and carbon dissociation on the surface of the catalyst particles. The partial oxidation and carbon contamination on catalyst particles controlled the activity of the catalyst. The DFT study revealed that the ferrocene-derived catalyst precursor was dissociated according to following process: the functional groups (such as CH3CO and COH) => first Cp ligands => second Cp ligands. The pyrolysis and release of Fe ions were delayed by the functional groups of ferrocene-derived precursors compared to ferrocene. The thermal-decomposition temperature of the catalyst precursor was high, the decomposition time was be delayed, affecting the formation of catalyst particles and thus making smaller catalyst particles. The size and composition of catalyst particles not only affect the nucleation of CNTs, but also affect physical properties. Therefore, the IG/ID ratio of the CNTs changed from 74 to 18 for acetylferrocene and ferrocene, respectively. The purity also increased from 79 to 90% using ferrocene-derived precursors.

We report a method for synthesizing zinc citrate spheres at a low temperature (90 °C) under normal atmospheric pressure. The spherical structures were amorphous and had an average diameter of ∼1.7 µm. The amorphous zinc citrate spheres could be converted into crystalline ZnO nanostructures in aqueous solutions by heating at 90 °C for 1 h. By local dissolution of the zinc citrate spheres, nucleation and growth of ZnO occurred on the surfaces of the amorphous zinc citrate spheres. The morphologies and exposed crystal faces of the crystalline ZnO nanostructures (structure I: oblate spheroid; structure II: prolate spheroid; structure III: hexagonal disk; structure IV: sphere) could be controlled simply by varying the solution composition (solutions I, II, III, or IV) in which the as-prepared amorphous zinc citrate spheres were converted. The concentration of citrate anions and solution pH played a decisive role in determining the morphologies and exposed crystal faces of the crystalline ZnO nanostructures. On the basis of experimental results, we propose a plausible mechanism for the conversion of amorphous zinc citrate spheres into the variety of observed ZnO structures.

Mitochondria are important regulators of both apoptosis and autophagy. One of the triggers for mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis is the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which include hydrogen peroxide, superoxide, hydroxyl radical, nitric oxide and peroxynitrite. Recently, several studies have indicated that ROS may also be involved in the induction of autophagy. In the present study, we used H(2)O(2) to induce mitochondrial stress, examined apoptotic- and autophagic-related gene expression and observed LC3 protein (autophagosome presence marker) expression in porcine parthenotes developing in vitro. In porcine four-cell parthenotes cultured for 5 days in NCSU37 medium containing 0.4% BSA, the developmental rate and mitochondrial distribution did not differ from that of the group supplemented with 100 µM H(2)O(2) but was significantly decreased in the group supplemented with 500 µM H(2)O(2) (P<0.05). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicated that whereas normal shaped mitochondria were observed in blastocysts from the control group, abnormal mitochondria (mitophagy) and autophagic vacuoles were observed in blastocysts from the group that received 500 µM H(2)O(2). Furthermore, addition of H(2)O(2) (100 µM and 500 µM) decreased cell numbers (P<0.05) and increased both apoptosis (P<0.05) and LC3 protein expression in the blastocysts. Real-time RT-PCR showed that H(2)O(2) significantly decreased mRNA expression of anti-apoptotic gene Bcl-xL but increased pro-apoptotic genes, Caspase 3 (Casp3) and Bak, and autophagy-related genes, microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (Map1lc3b) and lysosomal-associated membrane protein 2 (Lamp2). However, the addition of H(2)O(2) had no effect on mRNA expression levels in nuclear DNA-encoded mitochondrial-related genes, cytochrome oxidase (Cox) 5a, Cox5b and Cox6b1, in blastocysts. These results suggest that H(2)O(2) leads to mitochondrial dysfunction that results in apoptosis and autophagy, which is possibly related to porcine early embryo development.

RESUMO

Severe cerebral edema associated with exertional heat stroke is a major cause of death or disability. However, few studies on severe cerebral edema resulting from heat stroke have reported neuroradiological findings. Moreover, all the patients in these previous reports either died or remained severely disabled. Here, we report a case of exertional heat stroke with severe cerebral edema that probably developed or worsened due to delayed body temperature normalization. In contrast to previous reports, the patient showed complete clinical and neuroradiological recovery. This rare case suggests that severe cerebral edema could be reversed through meticulous supportive management. Moreover, it confirms the importance of rapid and effective cooling in heat stroke treatment.

Astragalus extract mixture HT042 is a standardized functional food granted by the Korean FDA for promoting "Children's Height Growth". In this study, we determined whether HT042 affects circulatory Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) after administration and investigated whether Growth hormone (GH), Growth hormone-releasing hormone receptor (GHRH-R), and Growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHS-R) mRNAs are expressed in the pituitary, and whether Growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) and Somatostatin (SST) are expressed in the hypothalamus. We also evaluated the growth effect of HT042 on endochondral bone formation. Male Sprague-Dawley rats in the control and HT042 groups were orally administered a single dose of the control and HT042, respectively, and those in the recombinant human GH (rhGH) group were subcutaneously injected with rhGH. Tetracycline was injected intraperitoneally 72 h prior to sacrifice to decide endochondral bone formation. To determine the endocrine or paracrine/autocrine mechanism, we evaluated the expression of local BMP-2 and IGF-1, an immunohistochemical study after HT042 administration. It was confirmed that the growth-promoting effect of HT042 can be contributed to the increase in serum IGF-1, which can be stimulated by GH secretion. Administration of HT042 modulated the activity of GHRH-R and GHR-S in the pituitary gland and promoted GH secretion, thereby changing longitudinal growth through GH/IGF-1 mediation. Results for GHRH and SST expression demonstrated that the hypothalamus can be influenced and mediated by HT042 through a complex neuroendocrine regulatory system. In addition, it was confirmed by oral administration for 10 days that HT042 increased bone formation in cartilage, which is important for height growth. The effect of HT042 could be owing to upregulation of local Bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) and IGF-1 expression in the growth plate, which could be regarded as a GH-dependent autocrine/paracrine pathway, as well as circulatory IGF-1.

Studies in rats, monkeys, and humans have found action-value signals in multiple regions of the brain. These findings suggest that action-value signals encoded in these brain structures bias choices toward higher expected rewards. However, previous estimates of action-value signals might have been inflated by serial correlations in neural activity and also by activity related to other decision variables. Here, we applied several statistical tests based on permutation and surrogate data to analyze neural activity recorded from the striatum, frontal cortex, and hippocampus. The results show that previously identified action-value signals in these brain areas cannot be entirely accounted for by concurrent serial correlations in neural activity and action value. We also found that neural activity related to action value is intermixed with signals related to other decision variables. Our findings provide strong evidence for broadly distributed neural signals related to action value throughout the brain.

Previous efforts to discover new surrogate markers for the central nervous system (CNS) inflammatory demyelinating disorders have shown inconsistent results; moreover, supporting evidence is scarce. The present study investigated the IgG autoantibody responses to various viral and autoantibodies-related peptides proposed to be related to CNS inflammatory demyelinating disorders using the peptide microarray method. We customized a peptide microarray containing more than 2440 immobilized peptides representing human and viral autoantigens. Using this, we tested the sera of patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD seropositive, n = 6; NMOSD seronegative, n = 5), multiple sclerosis (MS, n = 5), and myelin-oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD, n = 6), as well as healthy controls (HC, n = 5) and compared various peptide immunoglobulin G (IgG) responses between the groups. Among the statistically significant peptides based on the pairwise comparisons of IgG responses in each disease group to HC, cytomegalovirus (CMV)-related peptides were most clearly distinguishable among the study groups. In particular, the most significant differences in IgG response were observed for HC vs. MS and HC vs. seronegative NMOSD (p = 0.064). Relatively higher IgG responses to CMV-related peptides were observed in patients with MS and NMOSD based on analysis of the customized peptide microarray.

This is the first case of virus-associated encephalitis/encephalopathy in which the pathogen was Hantaan virus. A 53-yr-old man presented fever, renal failure and a hemorrhagic tendency and he was diagnosed with hemorrhagic fever with renal failure syndrome (HFRS). In the course of his illness, mild neurologic symptoms such as dizziness and confusion developed and magnetic resonance images revealed a reversible lesion in the splenium of the corpus callosum. This case suggests that HFRS patients with neurologic symptoms like dizziness and mental slowing should be considered to have structural brain lesions and to require brain imaging studies.
