RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To understand, in terms of complexity, the conditions that influence the interactions of health professionals in the face of death and dying of hospitalized adult patients and their families. METHOD: Theoretical and methodological references have been adopted, respectively, were the Complex Thought and Grounded Theory. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews between May 2015 and January 2016, with three sample groups: nurses, nursing technicians and members of the multidisciplinary team. The data analysis followed the steps of open, axial and selective coding. RESULTS: The category "Uncovering the care of patients in the process of death/dying and their families" and their respective subcategories present the complex interrelation of health professionals in the face of death and dying of patients. CONCLUSION: Causal conditions highlight the multiple connections established for care in the dialogic process of death/dying and reveal the complexity of lifeless care.

RESUMO

Grounded Theory (GT) has undergone many transformations since its proposition as a research method in the 1960s. As a result of these changes, three different GT approaches have been outlined: classic, straussian and constructivist ground theory, each with its peculiarities, but mainly concerning data analysis. Thus, this study aimed to describe and compare the data analysis process adopted by the different methodological perspectives of GT. The text is organized into two topics. Firstly, we present the common and differentiating characteristics of the three methodological perspectives of GT. In sequence, the data analysis system adopted in each of the GT methodological perspectives is described and exemplified, varying between two and three stages, and may or may not include the use of the paradigmatic model. Thus, this study provides support for understanding the different data analysis systems adopted in GT, which may contribute to the rigor and scientific quality of nursing research adopting this method.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: to understand the perception of nurses on the vulnerabilities to STD/AIDS in light of the process of adolescence. METHOD: qualitative research conducted with 15 nurses in a centre for the studies of adolescent healthcare of a university hospital in Rio de Janeiro/Brazil. The adopted theoretical and methodological frameworks were the Complexity Theory and the Grounded Theory, respectively. The semi-structured interview was used to collect data from January to August 2012. RESULTS: this research presents the category: Nurses' perceptions of the vulnerabilities to STD/AIDS in light of the process of adolescence, and the subcategories: Risks and uncertainties of the process of adolescence: paths to STD/AIDS; Age-adolescence complex: expanding knowledge from the perception of nurses. CONCLUSION: once the nurses understand the complexity of adolescence, they create strategies to reduce the vulnerability of adolescents to STD/AIDS. This signals the need to invest in education, assistance and the management of nursing care for adolescents.

RESUMO

This descriptive-reflexive study was performed with the objective to present the characteristics of researchers who use the Grounded Theory method, and outline the development of aptitudes for the researcher to become a Grounded Theoretician. The theoretical discussion was based on the frameworks of this methodology and supported by the literature. The article presents the main demands of qualitative studies using Grounded Theory, and important behaviors, attitudes and characteristics developed by the researchers. It is concluded that learning about Grounded Theory involves more than operationalizing a group of procedures and techniques. It also involves facing challenges to change one's attitude as a researcher and develop new ways of thinking and researching, gathering knowledge based on data to form a theory.

RESUMO

The objective of the following study was to analyze the conceptions that head nurses of a university hospital have about nursing communication management. It is a descriptive-exploratory study with an interpretative qualitative approach. The set of data was produced between September and October 2007 through interviews with 19 head nurses in a university hospital in Southern Brazil and submitted to thematic analysis. The nurses recognize the relevance of communication in nursing management, but have different perceptions: part of the research group understands communication from its interactive and dialogical perspective; others understand formal communication, based on the transmission and maintenance of standards and hospital routines, with emphasis on written communication. Further discussion about the triad communication, management and dialogue is required in order to build more interactive forms of hospital nursing care management.

RESUMO

The objective of this descriptive, cross-sectional study was to analyze the driving and hindering forces for team work at a Material and Sterilization Center (MSC) of a teaching hospital, through an approximation of Kurt Lewin's Field Theory,in Goiânia, Goiás. Participants were 35 professionals, who answered a self-administered questionnaire based on the referred theory, which establishes that group situations are permeated by forces that have a positive or negative influence on the individuals' movements, and concern the subjects' involvement (I), the groups interaction (Other) and the working environment (Evnironment). The data were submitted to content analysis, and distributed in the predefined dimensions. Results consolidated 1990 registers, with most (59.3%) being categorized as driving forces, mostly in the I dimension. It was observed there was balance between forces in the Other and Environment dimensions. Outlining the force field permitted an objective, concrete view of the strengths and weaknesses of the studied team, and the possibilities to promote changes.

RESUMO

This is a descriptive-reflective study based on literature and qualitative design. It aimed to discuss conceptual aspects of Grounded Theory (GT) and to present the applicability of this methodology within the nursing field. GT consists of an interpretative and systematic framework that extracts significant aspects from experiences of social actors and which enables researchers to construct theoretical frameworks and intensify expansion of knowledge. It has been shown to be an important and consistent framework for objects of study that involve human interactions and which include phenomena concerning professional practice and which have not yet been properly examined and understood according to the rigor required for the construction of knowledge in qualitative designs.

RESUMO

This study aims to present reflections on the meaning of olfactory sensations and perceptions, as well as their relevance as a phenomenon present in Nursing practice. It stresses the importance of the smells' chemical language in the hospital environment, emphasizing some deductions about the aesthetics of smells from the Nursing perspective. The authors conclude that a deeper aesthetic/philosophical and technical/scientific comprehension of smell emanations will contribute to human care, especially in Nursing diagnoses and prescriptions, environmental quality regulation and therapeutics.

RESUMO

In this work we aimed at reflecting about the nursing as a social practice. To build these ideas, we reconsidered this concept in its philosophical and social roots. With the purpose to contribute for this reflection, we looked for the characteristics that define the nursing as an historical and socially build practice, through the nursing development, since its beginning. At last we also propose a concept of social practice and, into this perspective, we built, along the text, an other concept for the nursing.

RESUMO

The practice of nurses' management is permeated by conflicts that can be interpreted through culture references. The objective of this study is to denote cultural specificities, analyzed according to Geertz's Cultural Interpretative Theory, that are expressed as conflicts in the scope of nurses' management at a University Hospital. The results denoted the incorporation of ideological elements and mechanisms of control and power, whose origin can be seen in the way in which the work is organized. The application of policies based on the profession's very values was observed. Practices highlight a cultural construction that elucidates some understandings regarding cognitive, social and behavioral processes, because they organize the interpretations and the answers to the events of nurses' practices in management. The results of this study point out the importance of organizational culture in the practice of Nursing management in the face of labor uncertainties in the complexity of a hospital environment.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To describe the stages in the cultural adaptation of "The End-Stage Renal Disease Adherence Questionnaire" for use in Brazil. METHOD: A descriptive, transversal study with a quantitative approach. The cultural adaptation followed the steps of translation, professional committee, back translation, panel of patients and pretest. RESULTS: the translation stage created a version in Portuguese that was analyzed by specialists, who suggested alterations in the title, seven sentences in the questions and three sets of answers. In the panel of patients phase, two questions were altered. The back translation considered the original characteristics of the instrument were maintained, likewise there were no modifications in the pretest phase. The third version written in Portuguese was considered to be the final version of the questionnaire. CONCLUSION: this instrument should facilitate nursing care management in hemodialysis, enabling the monitoring of adherence among these patients and also contribute to improving the indicators of morbidity and mortality.
