AIM: To explore and analyse the adaptation process of patients and their families at the point of lung cancer diagnosis. METHODS: Totally 23 operable lung cancer patients were included in this study. Colaizzi's method of phenomenology was employed for data analysis. RESULTS: This study found two different aspects of family adaptation at the diagnosis of lung cancer. For family resilience, three themes emerged: (1) Positive family belief systems (giving meaning to a cancer diagnosis and maintaining a positive/optimistic attitude), (2) Flexible family organizational patterns (maintaining the stability of family structure and function, adjusting the relationship between patients and family members and receiving external support and help) and (3) Good communication and problem-solving strategies (open communication on an equal basis, positive and open expression of emotions and collaborative problem-solving). For family vulnerability, three themes were as follows: (1) Negative family belief systems (negative attitudes and concealment and self-isolation due to stigma), (2) Rigid family organizational patterns (adaptation lost, conflicts between family support and patients' willingness and pressure upon social support) and (3) Unhealthy communication and problem-solving (poor communication, emotional asymmetry of family members and tendency to solve problems alone). CONCLUSION: The study highlights the existence of the family resilience and family vulnerability at the point of lung cancer diagnosis and provides patient's perspective for understanding family resilience in specific cultural contexts. Coptisine (COP) is the main active ingredient of Coptis chinensis. In Chinese veterinary clinics, Coptis chinensis is commonly used alongside florfenicol to treat intestinal infections. The goal of this study was to investigate the impact of COP co-administration on the pharmacokinetics of florfenicol in rats.Male Sprague-Dawley rats were orally administered COP (50 mg/kg BW) or sterile water for 7 consecutive days, followed by a single oral dose of florfenicol (25 mg/kg BW) on the 8th day. Pharmacokinetics of florfenicol were analysed using non-compartmental methods, while expression levels of cytochrome P450 (CYP) isoforms in the liver and P-glycoprotein (P-gp) in the jejunum were measured using real-time RT-PCR, Western blot and immunohistochemical analyses.Co-administration of COP and florfenicol significantly increased AUC(0-∞), MRT(0-∞), and Cmax of florfenicol, while CLz/F was significantly decreased. COP down-regulated the expression of CYP1A2, CYP2C11, and CYP3A1 in the liver, as well as P-gp in the jejunum.These findings suggest that co-administration of COP with florfenicol alters the pharmacokinetics of florfenicol in rats. The down-regulation of CYP and P-gp expression may contribute to this effect. Therefore, the co-administration of COP with florfenicol may enhance the prophylactic or therapeutic efficacy of florfenicol in veterinary practice.

Belamcanda chinensis (L.) DC, commonly used with florfenicol in Chinese veterinary clinics for respiratory tract infections, contains the major effective isoflavone, tectoridin (TEC). This study aimed to investigate the impact of TEC co-administration on the pharmacokinetics of florfenicol in vivo.Male rats received oral TEC (50 mg/kg BW) or sterile water for seven days, followed by a single oral dose of florfenicol (25 mg/kg BW) on the 8th day. Non-compartmental methods analysed the pharmacokinetics of florfenicol, while real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), Western blot, and immunohistochemical analyses measured expression levels of cytochrome P450 (CYP) isoforms in the liver and P-glycoprotein (P-gp) in the jejunum.TEC significantly decreased florfenicol's AUC(0-∞), MRT(0-∞), t1/2z, Vz/F, and Cmax by 24.75%, 18.43%, 55.47%, 43.05%, and 19.48%, while increasing CLz/F by 33.33%. TEC also up-regulated hepatic CYP1A2 and CYP3A1 mRNA expression, as well as intestinal MDR1, by 1.39-fold, 1.85-fold, and 1.65-fold. This coincided with a respective increase in protein expression by 1.37-fold, 1.39-fold, and 1.43-fold.These findings suggest that TEC-induced alterations in the pharmacokinetics of florfenicol may be attributed to increased CYP and P-gp expression. Further investigations are warranted to understand the implications of these findings on the clinical effectiveness of florfenicol in veterinary practice.

OBJECTIVE: To verify and compare whether the digital stories could effectively improve the resilience, self-efficacy and quality of life of postoperative NSCLC patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 90 participants at baseline were randomly assigned to two groups, 45 patients per group. The intervention group received the digital storytelling intervention which includes 4 videos on different topics: positive psychological quality, cultivating healthy living habits, establishing good social support, and insisting on scientific exercise, whereas the control group received only routine care. The resilience, self-efficacy, and quality of life were assessed at baseline (T0) (within 3 days before surgery), immediately after intervention (T1), one month after intervention (T2), and three months after intervention (T3). A linear mixed effects model was used to test the effects of the digital storytelling interventions on resilience, self-efficacy, and quality of life. RESULTS: The intervention group reported significantly greater improvements in resilience, self-efficacy, and quality of life (all P < 0.001) at follow-ups than the control group after controlling for age, gender, and education level as covariates. Moreover, the sensitivity analysis results are consistent with the per-protocol, that overall time × group interactions effects were significantly different in resilience, self-efficacy, and quality of life (all P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The digital storytelling intervention based on lung cancer survivors' experience can effectively improve resilience, self-efficacy and quality of life in postoperative lung cancer patients. More comprehensive researches are needed to evaluate the longer-term impacts of the DST and its feasibility for those with more advanced cancer.

The effects of Dangguibuxue Tang (DBT) on growth performance and immunity response in immunosuppressed broiler chicks were investigated in this study. 240 one-d-old broiler chicks (DaHeng S01) were randomly divided into 4 groups, 2.0% DBT-treatment (A), 0.5% DBT-treatment (B), cyclophosphamide-control (C), and control group (D). From 4 d to 7 d of age, chicks in group A, B and C were given cyclophosphamide (CY) at a dosage of 100mg/kg body weight (BW) daily by intraperitoneal injection to induce immunosuppression. Chicks in group D were given an equal volume of physiological saline daily by intraperitoneal injection and considered normal chicks. Groups A and B were supplemented with 2.0% or 0.5% of DBT in the drinking water from 8 d to 42 d of age. Groups C and D did not receive any additional medication. The results revealed that chicks from group B had lower feed:gain rate (FGR), lower total mortality, higher immunity organ indexes, higher levels of Newcastle disease (ND) antibody and infectious bursal disease (IBD) antibody, higher interleukin-2 and interleukin-6 levels, and greater lymphocyte proliferative responses to concanavalin A (ConA) during the experiment than those from group C. However, no significant difference in the immunity status in the two levels of DBT-treatment was observed. These results indicate that supplementation of 0.5% of DBT can improve both cellular immunity and humoral immunity in immunosuppressed broiler chicks.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the current status of disease-related knowledge and to analyze the relationship among the general condition, illness perception, and psychological status of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). METHODS: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 118 patients using convenience sampling. The general questionnaire, disease-related knowledge questionnaire of COVID-19, Illness Perception Questionnaire (IPQ), and Profile of Mood States (POMS) were used to measure the current status of participants. RESULTS: The overall average score of the disease-related knowledge of patients with COVID-19 was (79.19 ± 14.25), the self-care situation was positively correlated with knowledge of prevention and control (r = 0.265; P = 0.004) and total score of disease-related knowledge (r = 0.206; P = 0.025); the degree of anxiety was negatively correlated with the knowledge of diagnosis and treatment (r = -0.182; P = 0.049). The score of disease-related knowledge was negatively correlated with negative cognition (volatility, consequences, emotional statements) and negative emotions (tension, fatigue, depression) (P < 0.05); positively correlated with positive cognition (disease coherence) and positive emotion (self-esteem) (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: It was recommended that we should pay more attention to the elderly and low-income groups, and increase the knowledge about diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19 and self-care in the future health education for patients.

This study aims to describe the erythromycin resistance phenotypes and genotypes, and the prevalence of virulence genes of Enterococcus faecalis isolated from swine in China. A total of 117 nonreplicate E. faecalis isolates, obtained from 502 clinical samples taken from different pig farms between 2007 and 2009 were included in the study. Minimum inhibitory concentrations were determined using the broth microdilution method. All of the isolates were screened for the presence of seven virulence genes (ace, asa1, cylA, efaA, esp, gelE, and hyl). In addition, the DNA from rythromycin-resistant isolates were amplified with primers specific for erythromycin resistance erm(A), erm(B), erm(C), mef(A/E), and msr(C) genes. Results show that erythromycin, tylosin, and ciprofloxacin resistance rates in E. faecalis were 66.67% (n=78), 66.67% (n=78), and 64.10% (n=75), respectively. About 69.23% of isolates (n=81) were positive for gelE, 48.72% (n=57) for ace, 15.38% (n=18) for efa, 7.69% (n=9) for asa1, and 6.84% (n=8) for esp. Among the erythromycin-resistant isolates, erm(B) (n=54) was the most prevalent resistance gene, followed by erm(A) (n=37). A significant correlation was found between the presence of the gelE virulence gene and erythromycin resistance (P<0.05). These findings suggest that enterococci from swine should be regarded with caution because they can be reservoirs for antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes.

An efficient Li-S redox catalyst consisting of MWCNTs covalently modified by cobalt(II) tetraaminophthalocyanines (TaPcCo-MWCNTs) is developed. Effective lithium polysulfide (LiPS) capturing is enabled by the lithiophilic N-containing phthalocyanine rings and the sulfiphilic Co central atoms. This adsorption geometry utilizes the Co unoccupied d-orbitals as electron super-exchange highways. Elevated kinetics of LiPSs reactions in the liquid phase as well as liquid-solid transitions were revealed by electrochemical measurements and density functional theory calculations. Uniform deposition of Li2 S films was also observed, which preserves cathode integrity and sulfur utilization during cell cycling. The catalyzed sulfur redox is also significantly facilitated by the fast electron and Li-ion transport to and from the reaction sites through the conductive MWCNT skeletons and the lithiophilic substituent amino groups on TaPcCo. With 6 wt % addition of TaPcCo-MWCNT in the cathode coatings, high sulfur utilization is achieved with areal sulfur loadings of up to 7 mg cm-2 . Stable long-term cycling is achieved at 1 C at a sulfur loading of 5 mg cm-2 , with an initial areal capacity of 4.4 mAh cm-2 retention of 3.5 mAh cm-2 after 500 cycles. Considering the high structural diversity of phthalocyanines macromolecules, this study provides opportunities for a new class of Li-S catalysts.

The sulfur redox in Li-S batteries involves a complex sequence of solid-liquid-solid conversions, and reaction catalysis has recently become a focused area for further advancement. The deposition of solid Li2S from liquid Li2S4 contributes to three-quarters of the total theoretical capacity and is therefore of great significance over the entire cathode reaction. This study demonstrates a cathode material composed of carbon nanofibers decorated with catalytic Co phthalocyanine nanorods (CoPc@CNF), which are highly effective in promoting the deposition of Li2S in three-dimensional (3D) fine particles rather than 2D thin films. This significantly alleviates cathode passivation during cell charge and discharge, leading to obviously improved sulfur utilization and cycling stability for high loading cathodes. DFT calculations indicate that the promoted 3D deposition of Li2S is related to the facilitated migration of deposition precursors (Li2S4 and Li-ions) to migrate on the CoPc nanorods. Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) pouch cells were prepared with high specific (954 mAh g-1), areal (4.8 mAh cm-2), and total (235 mAh) capacities achieved at 0.5 C under high sulfur content. As metal phthalocyanines possess a high structural variability, this study provides opportunities to the design of a new class of Li-S cathode materials.

Four fractions obtained from chloroform extracts of neem (Azadirachta indica) oil by column chromatography were investigated for acaricidal activity against Sarcoptes scabiei var. cuniculi larvae in vitro. Octadecanoic acid-tetrahydrofuran-3,4-diyl ester was isolated from an active fraction of the chloroform extract and its toxicity against S. scabiei larvae was tested in vitro. A complementary log-log model was used to analyse the toxicity data. Activity was found in the third fraction, with 100% corrected mortality after 4.5 h of exposure at a concentration of 200 mg ml(-1). This fraction was repeatedly re-crystallised in acetone to yield a white amorphous powder, identified as octadecanoic acid-tetrahydrofuran-3,4-diyl ester, with a median lethal concentration (LC(50)) of 0.1 mg ml(-1) at 24 h post-treatment. The median lethal time (LT(50)) for this compound was 15.3 h at a concentration of 7.5 mg ml(-1).

Little is known about the antimicrobial resistance mechanisms in Klebsiella pneumoniae from swine in China. Thus, this paper aims to demonstrate the ß-lactam resistance phenotypes and genotypes of K. pneumoniae isolates from swine in southwestern China, detect possible new ß-lactamase variants, and determine whether or not the variants differ in their antibiotic resistance. Isolates from 58 unrelated diseased swine were collected from 61 pig farms in southwestern China from 2007 to 2009. Among the 58 isolates, 75.8-100% were resistant to ß-lactam, 62.0-68.97% to fluoroquinolone, 44.8-46.55% to aminoglycoside, and 8.62-17.24% to ß-lactam inhibitors. PCR amplification and DNA sequencing showed that bla(TEM-1) was detected in 100% (n=58) of the isolates, bla(SHV) in 82.76% (n=48), bla(CTX-M) in 39.66% (n=23), and bla(OKP) in 17.24% (n=10). The bla(SHV) types included bla(SHV-1), bla(SHV-11), bla(SHV-12), and bla(SHV-27). None of the isolates harbored bla(KPC), bla(LEN), or bla(GES) gene. Four novel variants (bla(OKP-A-13), bla(OKP-A-14), bla(OKP-A-15), and bla(OKP-A-16)) were identified among the 10 OKP ß-lactamase-producing K. pneumoniae isolates resistant to ampicillin, amoxicillin, oxacillin, cefalexin, and cefadroxil. Plasmid analysis and PCR amplification indicated that bla(TEM-1) genes were detected in the total plasmid. Molecular typing by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis revealed the presence of 10 distinct pulsotypes of OKP producer isolates. Plasmid DNA digested with XbaI yielded two to six bands of ca. 0.15-30 kb. Transformants of the 10 OKP producer isolates showed no differences in their antibiotic susceptibility, except for the pulsotype B transformant, which carried bla(CTX-M). In China, ß-lactam resistance appeared to be common among K. pneumoniae isolates from swine, suggesting that K. pneumoniae may be a reservoir for the dissemination of ß-lactam resistance among Chinese pig farms.

The preparation of neem oil microemulsion and its acaricidal activity in vitro was developed in this study. In these systems, the mixture of Tween-80 and the sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) (4:1, by weight) was used as compound surfactant; the mixture of compound surfactant and hexyl alcohol (4:1, by weight) was used as emulsifier system; the mixture of neem oil, emulsifier system and water (1:3.5:5.5, by weight) was used as neem oil microemulsion. All the mixtures were stired in 800 rpm for 15 min at 40 degrees C. The acaricidal activity was measured by the speed of kill. The whole lethal time value of 10% neem oil microemulsion was 192.50 min against Sarcoptes scabiei var. cuniculi larvae in vitro. The median lethal time value was 81.7463 min with the toxicity regression equations of Y=-6.0269+3.1514X. These results demonstrated that neem oil microemulsion was effective against Sarcoptes scabie var. cuniculi larvae in vitro.
