RESUMO

Identifying and protecting hotspots of endemism and species richness is crucial for mitigating the global biodiversity crisis. However, our understanding of spatial diversity patterns is far from complete, which severely limits our ability to conserve biodiversity hotspots. Here, we report a comprehensive analysis of amphibian species diversity in China, one of the most species-rich countries on Earth. Our study combines 20 y of field surveys with new molecular analyses of 521 described species and also identifies 100 potential cryptic species. We identify 10 hotspots of amphibian diversity in China, each with exceptional species richness and endemism and with exceptional phylogenetic diversity and phylogenetic endemism (based on a new time-calibrated, species-level phylogeny for Chinese amphibians). These 10 hotspots encompass 59.6% of China's described amphibian species, 49.0% of cryptic species, and 55.6% of species endemic to China. Only four of these 10 hotspots correspond to previously recognized biodiversity hotspots. The six new hotspots include the Nanling Mountains and other mountain ranges in South China. Among the 186 species in the six new hotspots, only 9.7% are well covered by protected areas and most (88.2%) are exposed to high human impacts. Five of the six new hotspots are under very high human pressure and are in urgent need of protection. We also find that patterns of richness in cryptic species are significantly related to those in described species but are not identical.

Reliable maps of species distributions are fundamental for biodiversity research and conservation. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) range maps are widely recognized as authoritative representations of species' geographic limits, yet they might not always align with actual occurrence data. In recent area of habitat (AOH) maps, areas that are not habitat have been removed from IUCN ranges to reduce commission errors, but their concordance with actual species occurrence also remains untested. We tested concordance between occurrences recorded in camera trap surveys and predicted occurrences from the IUCN and AOH maps for 510 medium- to large-bodied mammalian species in 80 camera trap sampling areas. Across all areas, cameras detected only 39% of species expected to occur based on IUCN ranges and AOH maps; 85% of the IUCN only mismatches occurred within 200 km of range edges. Only 4% of species occurrences were detected by cameras outside IUCN ranges. The probability of mismatches between cameras and the IUCN range was significantly higher for smaller-bodied mammals and habitat specialists in the Neotropics and Indomalaya and in areas with shorter canopy forests. Our findings suggest that range and AOH maps rarely underrepresent areas where species occur, but they may more often overrepresent ranges by including areas where a species may be absent, particularly at range edges. We suggest that combining range maps with data from ground-based biodiversity sensors, such as camera traps, provides a richer knowledge base for conservation mapping and planning.


Combinación de censos con fototrampas y mapas de extensión de la UICN para incrementar el conocimiento sobre la distribución de las especies Resumen Los mapas confiables de la distribución de las especies son fundamentales para la investigación y conservación de la biodiversidad. Los mapas de distribución de la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (UICN) están reconocidos como representaciones de autoridad de los límites geográficos de las especies, aunque no siempre se alinean con los datos actuales de su presencia. En los mapas recientes de área de hábitat (ADH), las áreas que no son hábitat han sido eliminadas de la distribución de la UICN para reducir los errores de comisión, pero su concordancia con la presencia actual de las especies tampoco ha sido analizada. In the Anthropocene, understanding the impacts of anthropogenic influence on biodiversity and behavior of vulnerable wildlife communities is increasingly relevant to effective conservation. However, comparative studies aimed at disentangling the concurrent effect of different types of human disturbance on multifaceted biodiversity and on activity patterns of mammals are surprisingly rare. We applied a multiregion community model to separately estimate the effects of cumulative human modification (e.g., settlement, agriculture, and transportation) and human presence (aggregated presence of dogs, people, and livestock) on species richness and functional composition of medium- and large-bodied mammals based on camera trap data collected across 45 subtropical montane forests. We divided the detected mammal species into three trophic guilds-carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores-and assessed the nocturnal shifts of each guild in response to anthropogenic activities. Overall, species richness tended to increase (ß coefficient = 0.954) as human modification increased but richness decreased as human presence increased (ß = -1.054). Human modification was associated with significantly lower functional diversity (mean nearest taxon distance [MNTD], ß = -0.134; standardized effect sizes of MNTD, ß = -0.397), community average body mass (ß = -0.240), and proportion of carnivores (ß = -0.580). Human presence was associated with a strongly reduced proportion of herbivores (ß = -0.522), whereas proportion of omnivores significantly increased as human presence (ß = 0.378) and habitat modification (ß = 0.419) increased. In terms of activity patterns, omnivores (ß = 12.103) and carnivores (ß = 9.368) became more nocturnal in response to human modification. Our results suggest that human modification and human presence have differing effects on mammals and demonstrate that anthropogenic disturbances can lead to drastic loss of functional diversity and result in a shift to nocturnal behavior of mammals. Conservation planning should consider concurrent effects of different types of human disturbance on species richness, functional diversity, and behavior of wildlife communities.


Pérdidas en la Diversidad Funcional y Cambios en el Comportamiento Nocturno de los Mamíferos bajo la Perturbación Antropogénica Resumen En el Antropoceno, el conocimiento sobre la influencia antropogénica sobre la biodiversidad y el comportamiento de las comunidades vulnerables de fauna es cada vez más relevante para la conservación efectiva. Sin embargo, sorprende que los estudios comparativos dirigidos a desentrañar el efecto concurrente de los diferentes tipos de perturbación humana sobre la biodiversidad multifacética y sobre los patrones de actividad de los mamíferos son escasos. Aplicamos un modelo de comunidad multirregional para estimar de manera separada los efectos de la modificación humana (p. ej.: establecimientos, agricultura, transporte) y la presencia humana (presencia agregada de perros, gente y ganado) acumuladas sobre la riqueza de especies y la composición funcional de los mamíferos de tamaño mediano y grande con base en datos de fototrampas recolectados en 45 bosques montanos subtropicales. Dividimos las especies de mamíferos detectadas en tres gremios tróficos: carnívoros, herbívoros y omnívoros, y analizamos los cambios nocturnos de cada gremio como respuesta a las actividades antropogénicas. En general, la riqueza de especies tuvo una tendencia al incremento (coeficiente ß = 0.954) conforme aumentaron las modificaciones humanas, pero la riqueza disminuyó conforme incrementó la presencia humana (ß = −1.054). Norethindrone (NET) is a widely used synthetic progestin, which appears in water environments and threatens aquatic organisms. In this study, marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) larvae were exposed to 7.6 and 80.1 ng/L NET for 190 days. The effects of NET on growth, sex differentiation, gonad histology and transcriptional expression profiles of hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis-related genes were determined. The results showed that exposure to 80.1 ng/L NET caused an all-male marine medaka population and significantly decreased the growth of males. Exposure to 7.6 ng/L NET increased the ratio of males/females in the marine medaka population, decreased the growth of males and delayed the ovary maturation in females. However, the sperm maturation was accelerated by 7.6 or 80.1 ng/L NET. In females, the transcription levels of cytochrome P450 aromatase (cyp19a1a) and progesterone receptor (pgr) in ovaries, glucocorticoid receptor (gr) and vitellogenin (vtg) in livers were suppressed after exposure to 7.6 ng/L NET, which may cause delayed ovary maturation. In males, NET significantly decreased the transcription levels of follicle stimulating hormone ß (fshß) and Luteinizing hormone ß (lhß)in the brain, Estrogen receptor ß (erß),gr and pgr in the liver, and vitellogenin receptor (vtgr) in the testes, while NET of 80.1 ng/L led to a significant up-regulation of steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (star) in the testes of males. These results showed that NET could influence growth, sex differentiation and gonadal maturation and significantly alter the transcriptional expression levels of HPG axis-related genes.

Fast Fourier transforms (FFT) is a basic approach to remote sensing image processing. With the improvement of capacity of remote sensing image capture with the features of hyperspectrum, high spatial resolution and high temporal resolution, how to use FFT technology to efficiently process huge remote sensing image becomes the critical step and research hot spot of current image processing technology. FFT algorithm, one of the basic algorithms of image processing, can be used for stripe noise removal, image compression, image registration, etc. in processing remote sensing image. CUFFT function library is the FFT algorithm library based on CPU and FFTW. FFTW is a FFT algorithm developed based on CPU in PC platform, and is currently the fastest CPU based FFT algorithm function library. However there is a common problem that once the available memory or memory is less than the capacity of image, there will be out of memory or memory overflow when using the above two methods to realize image FFT arithmetic. To address this problem, a CPU and partitioning technology based Huge Remote Fast Fourier Transform (HRFFT) algorithm is proposed in this paper. By improving the FFT algorithm in CUFFT function library, the problem of out of memory and memory overflow is solved. Moreover, this method is proved rational by experiment combined with the CCD image of HJ-1A satellite. When applied to practical image processing, it improves effect of the image processing, speeds up the processing, which saves the time of computation and achieves sound result.

White-cheeked macaque Macaca leucogenys is a recently described primate species discovered by camera-trap surveys in the Medog region in 2015. The species was thought to be narrowly distributed in southeastern Tibet. However, knowledge on the distribution and conservation of the species is quite limited. Based on a systematic camera-trapping survey, we report the occurrence of the species in the Gaoligong Mountains, over 350 km southeast of the nearest known population. We recorded 3025 photographs of white-cheeked macaques representing 481 independent records from 59 camera-trap stations with total trapping efforts of 18,437 camera days. Notably, part of the newly discovered locations of the white-cheeked macaque are outside of nature reserves without any formal protection and management. Our survey also confirms the occurrence of ten primate species in the Gaoligong Mountains, accounting for 35.7% of China's primates, including the Skywalker hoolock gibbon Hoolock tianxing and the Myanmar snub-nosed monkey Rhinopithecus strykeri etc. These findings reveal a new distribution record for the white-cheeked macaque and further highlight the conservation values of Gaoligong Mountains for globally threatened primate species. We also provide a preliminary report on the daily activity patterns of this endangered species, which enriches the bio-ecological data of the poorly studied species. We believe the report has significant implications for understanding the ecology of the species and improving conservation planning.

As awareness of BPA's health risks has increased, many countries and regions have implemented strict controls on its use. Consequently, bisphenol analogues like BPF and BPAF are being increasingly used as substitutes. However, these compounds are also becoming increasingly prevalent in the environment due to production, use and disposal processes. The oceans act as a repository for various pollutants, and recent studies have revealed the extensive presence of bisphenols (BPs, including BPA, BPF, BPAF, etc.) in the marine environment, posing numerous health hazards to marine wildlife. Nevertheless, the reproductive toxicity of these chemicals on marine fish is not comprehensively comprehended yet. Thus, the histological features of the gonads and the gene expression profiles of HPG (Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal) axis-related genes in marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) were studied after exposure to single and combined BPs for 70 days. The effects of each exposure group on spawning, embryo fertilization, and hatching in marine medaka were also assessed. Furthermore, the impacts of each exposure group on the genes related to methylation in the F2 and F3 generations were consistently investigated. BPs exposure was found to cause follicular atresia, irregular oocytes, and empty follicles in the ovary; but no significant lesions in the testis were observed. The expression of several HPG axis genes, including cyp19b, 17ßhsd, 3ßhsd, and fshr, resulted in significant changes compared to the control group. The quantity of eggs laid and fertilization rate decreased in all groups treated with BPs, with the BPAF-treated group showing a notable reduction in the number of eggs laid. Additionally, the hatching rate showed a more significant decline in the BPF-treated group. The analysis of methylated genes in the offspring of bisphenol-treated groups revealed significant changes in the expression of genes including amh, dnmt1, dnmt3ab, mbd2, and mecp2, indicating a potential transgenerational impact of bisphenols on phenotype through epigenetic modifications. Overall, the potential detrimental impact of bisphenol on the reproduction of marine medaka emphasizes the need for caution in considering the use of BPAF and BPF as substitutes.

Salinity is an important environmental factor influencing the toxicity of chemicals. Bisphenol A (BPA) is an environmental endocrine disruptor with adverse effects on aquatic organisms, such as fish. However, the influence of salinity on the biotoxicity of BPA and the underlying mechanism are unclear. In this study, we exposed marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) to BPA at different salinities (0 psµ, 15 psµ, and 30 psµ) for 70days to investigate the toxic effects. At 0 psµ salinity, BPA had an inhibitory effect on the swimming behavior of female medaka. At 15 psµ salinity, exposure to BPA resulted in necrotic cells in the ovaries but not on the spermatozoa. In addition, BPA exposure changed the transcript levels of genes related to the nervous system (gap43, elavl3, gfap, mbpa, and α-tubulin) and the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis (fshr, lhr, star, arα, cyp11a, cyp17a1, cyp19a, and erα); the expression changes differed among salinity levels. These results suggest that salinity influences the adverse effects of BPA on the nervous system and reproductive system of medaka. These results emphasize the importance of considering the impact of environmental factors when carrying out ecological risk assessment of pollutants.

Spatial and temporal associations between sympatric species underpin biotic interactions, structure ecological assemblages, and sustain ecosystem functioning and stability. However, the resilience of interspecific spatiotemporal associations to human activity remains poorly understood, particularly in mountain forests where anthropogenic impacts are often pervasive. Here, we applied context-dependent Joint Species Distribution Models to a systematic camera-trap survey dataset from a global biodiversity hotspot in eastern Himalayas to understand how prominent human activities in mountain forests influence species associations within terrestrial mammal communities. We obtained 10,388 independent detections of 17 focal species (12 carnivores and five ungulates) from 322 stations over 43,163 camera days of effort. We identified a higher incidence of positive associations in habitats with higher levels of human modification (87%) and human presence (83%) compared to those located in habitats with lower human modification (64%) and human presence (65%) levels. We also detected a significant reduction of pairwise encounter time at increasing levels of human disturbance, corresponding to more frequent encounters between pairs of species. Our findings indicate that human activities can push mammals together into more frequent encounters and associations, which likely influences the coexistence and persistence of wildlife, with potential far-ranging ecological consequences.

Himalayan shrews of the genus Soriculus (Soricidae, Eulipotyphla), currently represented by four nominal species, are endemic to the Himalayas and the Gaoligong Mountains. In April 2022 and April 2023, a total of 10 specimens of Soriculus were collected from Beibeng and Damu, Medog County, Tibet, China. The morphology of the specimens was compared with the four recognised species of the genus Soriculus. Additionally, two mitochondrial (Cyt b and 12S) and three nuclear (APOB, BRCAI and RAG2) genes were sequenced to test the phylogenetic relationships of these specimens with the other species. Our results indicate that these specimens represent a distinct species, Soriculusbeibengensissp. nov., which is formally described here. The new species is distinguished from the other Soriculus species by the combination of darker pelages, smaller size, the relatively stubby nasal and the widened posterior processes of incisors. Phylogenetic analyses revealed the new species is sister to S.minor. The p-distance of Cyt b gene between S.beibengensis sp. nov. and other nominal Soriculus species ranges from 9.1-16.3%. This new species has a known distribution at an elevation of 1,500-2,125 m in Medog County, Tibet, China. The discovery of this new species from Medog County has important implications for interpreting small mammal biogeographic patterns in the eastern Himalaya and the mountain chains of south-west China.

Alleviating human-carnivore conflict is central to large carnivore conservation and is often of economic importance, where people coexist with carnivores. In this article, we report on the patterns of predation and economic losses from wild carnivores preying on livestock in three villages of northern Baima Xueshan Nature Reserve, northwest Yunnan during a 2-year period between January 2010 and December 2011. We analyzed claims from 149 households that 258 head of livestock were predated. Wolves (Canis lupus) were responsible for 79.1 % of livestock predation; Asiatic black bears (Selenarctos thibetanus) and dholes (Cuon alpinus) were the other predators responsible. Predation frequency varied between livestock species. The majority of livestock killed were yak-cattle hybrids or dzo (40.3 %). Wolves killed fewer cattle than expected, and more donkeys and horses than expected. Wolves and bears killed more adult female and fewer adult male livestock than expected. Intensified predation in wet season coincided with livestock being left to graze unattended in alpine meadows far away from villages. On average, carnivore attacks claimed 2.1 % of range stock annually. This predation represented an economic loss of 17 % (SD = 14 %) of the annual household income. Despite this loss and a perceived increase in carnivore conflict, a majority of the herders (66 %) still supported the reserve. This support is primarily due to the benefits from the collection of nontimber resources such as mushrooms and medicinal plants. Our study also suggested that improvement of husbandry techniques and facilities will reduce conflicts and contribute to improved conservation of these threatened predators.

Norethisterone (NET), one of the synthetic progestins, is detected with increasing frequency in the water environment and distributed in the ocean, with a potential toxicity risk to marine organisms. However, current studies on the adverse effects of progestins (including NET) in aquatic environments have focused on freshwater organisms, mainly fish. In the present, marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) larvae were exposed to 91.31 ng/L NET for 10 days, and then the swimming behavior, oxidation-antioxidant-related enzyme activities, sex and thyroid hormone levels, and the gene transcription patterns of the larvae were measured. After NET treatment, medaka larvae were raised in artificial seawater until 5 months of age, and the sex ratio was counted. Ten-day exposure to 91.31 ng/L NET inhibited swimming behavior, of marine medaka larvae, which showed that the time in the resting state was significantly prolonged, while the time in the large motor state was significantly reduced; disrupted oxidative-antioxidant system, significantly up-regulated the enzymatic activities of reactive oxygen species (ROS), malondialdehyde (MDA), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px); affected the hormone levels of larvae, lowered 11- keto testosterone (11-KT) and triiodothyronine (T3) concentrations. RNA-seq results showed that 91.31 ng/L NET exposure for 10 days changed the transcript levels of 275 genes, of which 28 were up-regulated and 247 were down-regulated. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were mainly significantly enriched in piwi interacting RNA (piRNA), gonadal development, gametogenesis, and steroidogenesis biological processes, etc. After removing NET exposure and returning to breeding for 140 days, a significant increase in male proportions (69.67%) was observed in sexually mature medaka populations in the NET-treated group. These results show that exposure to 91.31 ng/L NET for 10 days can lead to various adverse effects on marine medaka larvae. These findings shed light on the potential ecological risks of synthetic progestins to marine organisms.

Bisphenols are environmental endocrine disruptors that have detrimental effects on aquatic organisms. Using marine medaka larvae, this study explored the effects of bisphenol compounds [bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S (BPS), bisphenol F (BPF), and bisphenol AF (BPAF)] on the early growth and development of aquatic organisms. Marine medaka larvae were exposed to bisphenol compounds at concentrations of 0.05, 0.5, and 5 µM for 72 h, and changes in heartbeat rate, behavior, hormone levels, and gene expression were determined. Bisphenols were shown to have a toxic effect on the cardiovascular system of larvae and can cause neurotoxicity and endocrine disruption, such as changes to thyroid-related hormones. Functional enrichment showed that bisphenols mainly affect lipid metabolism and cardiac muscle contraction of larvae, which implied that the main toxic effects of bisphenols on marine medaka larvae targeted the liver and heart. This study provides a theoretical foundation for evaluating the toxicological effects of bisphenols on the early development of aquatic organisms.

Bisphenol AF (BPAF) is one of the substitutes for bisphenol A (BPA), which has endocrine-disrupting, reproductive and neurological toxicity. BPAF has frequently been detected in the aquatic environment, which has been a long-term threat to the health of aquatic organisms. In this study, female marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) were exposed to 6.7 µg/L, 73.4 µg/L, and 367.0 µg/L BPAF for 120 d. The effects of BPAF on behavior, growth, liver and ovarian histology, gene transcriptional profiles, and reproduction of marine medaka were determined. The results showed that with the increase of BPAF concentration, the swimming speed of female marine medaka showed an increasing trend and then decreasing trend. BPAF (367.0 µg/L) significantly increased body weight and condition factors in females. BPAF (73.4 µg/L and 367.0 µg/L) significantly delayed oocyte maturation. Exposure to 367.0 µg/L BPAF showed an increasing trend in the transcript levels of lipid synthesis and transport-related genes such as fatty acid synthase (fasn), sterol regulatory element binding protein (srebf), diacylglycerol acyltransferase (dgat), solute carrier family 27 member 4 (slc27a4), fatty acid-binding protein (fabp), and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (pparγ) in the liver. In addition, 6.7 µg/L BPAF significantly down-regulated the expression levels of antioxidant-related genes [superoxide dismutase (sod), glutathione peroxidase (gpx), and catalase (cat)], and complement system-related genes [complement component 5 (c5), complement component 7a (c7a), mannan-binding lectin serine peptidase 1 (masp1), and tumor necrosis factor (tnf)] were significantly up-regulated in the 73.4 and 367.0 µg/L groups, which implies the effect of BPAF on the immune system in the liver. In the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis (HPG) results, the transcription levels of estrogen receptor α (erα), estrogen receptor ß (erß), androgen receptor (arα), gonadotropin-releasing hormone 2 (gnrh2), cytochrome P450 19b (cyp19b), aromatase (cyp19a), and luteinizing hormone receptor (lhr) in the brain and ovary, and vitellogenin (vtg) and choriogenin (chg) in the liver of 367.0 µg/L BPAF group showed a downward trend. In addition, exposure to 367.0 µg/L BPAF for 120 d inhibited the spawning behavior of marine medaka. Our results showed that long-term BPAF treatment influenced growth (body weight and condition factors), lipid metabolism, and ovarian maturation, and significantly altered the immune response and the transcriptional expression levels of HPG axis-related genes.

Bisphenols (BPA, BPF, and BPAF) are widely present in the aquatic environment and have various adverse effects on aquatic organisms. However, their hepatic toxicity in marine fish is not fully understood. Hence, we examined the growth parameters, histological features, antioxidant defense mechanisms, and gene expression profiles in the livers of marine medaka after exposure to single and combined bisphenols for 70 days. The final body weight and final body length of males exposed to BPAF were significantly higher than those in the control group, and the survival rate was significantly lower. Bisphenol exposure led to vacuolization and local lesions in the liver, especially in the BPAF group, and altered antioxidant enzyme activity in the liver, leading to oxidative stress. In addition, after bisphenol exposure, marine medaka showed anxiolytic effects and a significant reduction in swimming distance compared with that in the control group. As determined by RNA-seq, bisphenol exposure altered multiple biological pathways in the liver, such as fatty acid biosynthesis, fatty acid metabolism, and ribosome biogenesis pathways, with significant changes in gene expression levels. In particular, chgs and vtgs were significantly up-regulated after BPAF exposure, suggesting an estrogenic effect. Overall, bisphenols can adversely affect the growth and metabolism of marine medaka. BPF and BPAF may not be ideal substitutes for BPA.

Tens of thousands of species are increasingly confronted with habitat degradation and threatened with local extirpation and global extinction as a result of human activities. Understanding the local processes that shape the regional distribution patterns of at-risk species is useful in safeguarding species against threats. However, there is only limited understanding of the processes that shape the regional distribution patterns of threatened species. We explored the drivers and patterns of species richness of threatened, non-threatened and total terrestrial mammals by employing multi-region multi-species occupancy models based on data from a broad camera trapping survey at 1096 stations stratified across different levels of human activities in 54 mountain forests in southwest China. We compared correlates between total and threatened species richness and examined relationships of human impact variables with the proportion of threatened species and the site's local contribution to ß diversity (LCBD). We found that threatened species richness was negatively related to human modification and human presence. However, both non-threatened and total species richness increased as human modification increased. Predicted proportions of threatened species were strongly and positively related to LCBD but negatively related to human modification and human presence. Our results indicate that human impacts can lead to disproportionate loss of threatened terrestrial mammals and highlight the importance of considering threatened species diversity independently from total species richness for directing conservation resources. Our approach represents one of the highest-resolution analyses of different types of human impacts on regional diversity patterns of threatened terrestrial mammals available to inform conservation policy.

The food habits of Rhinopithecus bieti were studied at Mt. Longma in Tianchi Nature Reserve, Yunnan Province, China using microhistological analysis of feces and phytochemical component analysis of food items, from January 2007 to March 2008. This region is the southernmost location of R. bieti with the most complex and varied vegetation types. R. bieti fed on 83 plant species of 26 families, at least 3 species of lichens and bamboos, respectively. The number of food items exploited varied markedly among seasons, with dietary diversity being greatest in summer and autumn. Young leaves of broadleaf plant, monocotyledonous plant leaves (bamboos), and 3 species of lichens in the genera Bryoria (Bryoria confuse) and Usnea (Unsea longissima and Unsea florida) were frequently eaten. Bamboos (Poaceae) and lichens formed a stable dietary constituent throughout the year, contributing about 24 and 13%, respectively, of the total feeding records. There was seasonal variation in the proportion of each food type in the diet of the R. bieti. Results of the phytochemistry analysis showed that food selectivity of R. bieti was positively correlated with the ratio of crude protein to neutral detergent fibre (CP/NDF) and negatively correlated with condensed tannins (CT). Results from the study also showed that the primary food items eaten by R. bieti in summer had higher CP and lower CT than in winter.

Hainan medaka (Oryzias curvinotus) is distributed in the coastal waters of the South China Sea and is able to adapt to a wide range of salinities. In this study, we characterized O. curvinotus in Sanya River (SY-medaka), which lacks dmy (a male sex-determining gene in O. latipes and O. curvinotus). In a comparison of SY-medaka and Gaoqiao medaka (GQ-medaka), the morphological difference between the two populations does not reach the subspecies level and they can be considered two geographic populations of O. curvinotus. A mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (CoI) sequence alignment showed that the sequence identities between SY-medaka and other geographic populations of O. curvinotus are as high as 95%. A phylogenetic analysis of the mitochondrial genome also indicated that SY-medaka belongs to O. curvinotus. Molecular marker-based genetic sex assays and whole genome re-sequencing showed that SY-medaka does not contain dmy. Further, in RNA-Seq analyses of the testis and ovaries of sexually mature SY-medaka, dmy expression was not detected. We speculate that high temperatures resulted in the loss of dmy in SY-medaka during evolution, or the lineage has another sex-determining gene. This study provides a valuable dataset for elucidating the mechanism underlying sex determination in Oryzias genus and advances research on functional genomics or reproduction biology in O. curvinotus.

Understanding the species diversity patterns along elevational gradients is critical for biodiversity conservation in mountainous regions. We examined the elevational patterns of species richness and turnover, and evaluated the effects of spatial and environmental factors on nonvolant small mammals (hereafter "small mammal") predicted a priori by alternative hypotheses (mid-domain effect [MDE], species-area relationship [SAR], energy, environmental stability, and habitat complexity]) proposed to explain the variation of diversity. We designed a standardized sampling scheme to trap small mammals at ten elevational bands across the entire elevational gradient on Yulong Mountain, southwest China. A total of 1,808 small mammals representing 23 species were trapped. We observed the hump-shaped distribution pattern of the overall species richness along elevational gradient. Insectivores, rodents, large-ranged species, and endemic species richness showed the general hump-shaped pattern but peaked at different elevations, whereas the small-ranged species and endemic species favored the decreasing richness pattern. The MDE and the energy hypothesis were supported, whereas little support was found for the SAR, the environmental stability hypothesis, and the habitat complexity. However, the primary driver(s) for richness patterns differed among the partitioning groups, with NDVI (the normalized difference vegetation index) and MDE being the most important variables for the total richness pattern. Species turnover for all small mammal groups increased with elevation, and it supported a decrease in community similarity with elevational distance. Our results emphasized for increased conservation efforts in the higher elevation regions of the Yulong Mountain.

The effect of estrogens on Oryzias curvinotus juveniles were investigated by sequencing the transcriptome of O. curvinotus juveniles exposed to 17 ß - estradiol for 24 h. A total of 69,071,524 and 71,210,528 raw reads were obtained for the control group (NC) and 17 ß - estradiol exposure group (E2), respectively. After de novo assembly, total 133,210 unigenes were identified, and 85,837 unigenes (64.44% of 133,210) were annotated. Analysis of the transcriptome showed that exposure to 2 µg/L 17 ß - estradiol led to the up-regulation of 19 genes and down-regulation of 18 genes. The eef1b and rps4x was most suitable as controls for quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) using Reffinder. Different expression genes enrichment analysis found that exposed to 2 µg/L 17 ß - estradiol affected various physiological processes, including spliceosome, phototransduction, amino sugar and nuclear sugar metabolism, hypotaurine metabolism, and renin-angiotensin system, etc. Exposing O. curvinotus juveniles to increasing concentrations of 17 ß - estradiol (2 ng/L, 20 ng/L, 200 ng/L and 2 µg/L) led to significant up-regulation of vitellogenins (vtgs) and choriogenins (chgs) mRNA expression. The present study is the first high-throughput transcriptome sequencing of O. curvinotus juveniles, which will be useful for future functional analysis of genes related to environmental estrogen exposed, and development of biomarkers.
