RESUMO

Advancements in the management of patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) allowed them to achieve survival comparable with their healthy counterparts. Consequently, their care has widened with growing focus on quality of life, including parenting children. Although tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) are contraindicated in pregnancy given their teratogenic effect, their effect on male fertility is less clear with contradictory results from animal studies and case reports/series. We compared the sperm analysis parameters, as the gold-standard assessment for male fertility, of 11 patients with CP- CML before and after TKI therapy. Median therapy duration was 5.1 years (range: 2.5-16.5). The sperm concentration, % progressive, and total motility before and after therapy were not significantly different (p = 0.376, 0.569, and 0.595, respectively). Our results suggest no impairment in fertility potential in male patients after TKI therapy. A larger sample size is crucial to support/refute our findings.

Young children are prolific question-askers. The growing ubiquity of voice interfaces (e.g., Apple's Siri, Amazon's Alexa), as well as the availability of voice input in search fields, now make it possible for children to ask questions via Internet search when they are able to speak clearly, but before they have learned to read and write, typically between 3 and 6 years of age. The prevalence of voice search makes it important to understand children's changing conceptions of digital devices as a source of information and the role of technology-mediated question-asking in development. While limited research has focused on young children's use of voice interfaces, reviewing two related bodies of literature sheds light on how this use might unfold. This paper brings together studies of how children look for information, and of how they perceive and understand the informational and social roles of technology, drawing on human-computer interaction research. We conclude by highlighting lines of questioning for future work on younger children's interaction through voice search.

RESUMO

Touch screen devices such as smartphones and tablets are now ubiquitous in the lives of American children. These devices permit very young children to engage interactively in an intuitive fashion with actions as simple as touching, swiping and pinching. Yet, we know little about the role these devices play in very young children's lives or their impact on early learning and development. Here we focus on two areas in which existing research sheds some light on these issues with children under 3 years of age. The first measures transfer of learning, or how well children use information learned from screens to reason about events off-screen, using object retrieval and word learning tasks. The second measures the impact of interactive screens on parent-child interactions and story comprehension during reading time. More research is required to clarify the pedagogical potential and pitfalls of touch screens for infants and very young children, especially research focused on capabilities unique to touch screens and on the social and cultural contexts in which young children use them.
