RESUMO

Cholesterol is highly enriched at the plasma membrane (PM), and lipid transfer proteins may deliver cholesterol to the PM in a nonvesicular manner. Here, through a mini-screen, we identified the oxysterol binding protein (OSBP)-related protein 2 (ORP2) as a novel mediator of selective cholesterol delivery to the PM. Interestingly, ORP2-mediated enrichment of PM cholesterol was coupled with the removal of phosphatidylinositol 4, 5-bisphosphate (PI(4,5)P2) from the PM. ORP2 overexpression or deficiency impacted the levels of PM cholesterol and PI(4,5)P2, and ORP2 efficiently transferred both cholesterol and PI(4,5)P2in vitro. We determined the structure of ORP2 in complex with PI(4,5)P2 at 2.7 Å resolution. ORP2 formed a stable tetramer in the presence of PI(4,5)P2, and tetramerization was required for ORP2 to transfer PI(4,5)P2. Our results identify a novel pathway for cholesterol delivery to the PM and establish ORP2 as a key regulator of both cholesterol and PI(4,5)P2 of the PM.

RESUMO

The shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) severely hinders the development and commercialization of lithium-sulfur batteries, and the design of high-conductive carbon fiber-host material has become a key solution to suppress the shuttle effect. In this work, a unique Co/CoN-carbon nanocages@TiO2-carbon nanotubes structure (NC@TiO2-CNTs) is constructed using an electrospinning and nitriding process. Lithium-sulfur batteries using NC@TiO2-CNTs as cathode host materials exhibit high sulfur utilization (1527 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C) and can still maintain a discharge capacity of 663 mAh g-1 at a high current density of 5 C, and the capacity loss is only 0.056% per cycle during 500 cycles at 1 C. It is worth noting that even under extreme conditions (sulfur-loading = 90%, surface-loading = 5.0 mg cm-2 (S), and E/S = 6.63 µL mg-1), the lithium-sulfur batteries can still provide a reversible capacity of 4 mAh cm-2. Throughdensity functional theory calculations, it has been found that the Co/CoN heterostructures can adsorb and catalyze LiPSs conversion effectively. Simultaneously, the TiO2 can adsorb LiPSs and transfer Li+ selectively, achieving dual confinement for the shuttle effect of LiPSs (nanocages and nanotubes). The new findings provide a new performance enhancement strategy for the commercialization of lithium-sulfur batteries.

The elements of the p-block of the periodic table are of high interest in various chemical and technical applications like frustrated Lewis-pairs (FLP) or opto-electronics. However, high-quality benchmark data to assess approximate density functional theory (DFT) for their theoretical description are sparse. In this work, we present a benchmark set of 604 dimerization energies of 302 "inorganic benzenes" composed of all non-carbon p-block elements of main groups III to VI up to polonium. This so-called IHD302 test set comprises two classes of structures formed by covalent bonding and by weaker donor-acceptor (WDA) interactions, respectively. Generating reliable reference data with ab initio methods is challenging due to large electron correlation contributions, core-valence correlation effects, and especially the slow basis set convergence. To compute reference values for these dimerization reactions, after thorough testing, we applied a computational protocol using state-of-the-art explicitly correlated local coupled cluster theory termed PNO-LCCSD(T)-F12/cc-VTZ-PP-F12(corr.). It includes a basis set correction at the PNO-LMP2-F12/aug-cc-pwCVTZ level. Based on these reference data, we assess 26 DFT methods in combination with three different dispersion corrections and the def2-QZVPP basis set, five composite DFT approaches, and five semi-empirical quantum mechanical methods. For the covalent dimerizations, the r2SCAN-D4 meta-GGA, the r2SCAN0-D4 and ωB97M-V hybrids, and the revDSD-PBEP86-D4 double-hybrid functional are found to be the best-performing methods among the evaluated functionals of the respective class. However, since def2 basis sets for the 4th period are not associated to relativistic pseudo-potentials, we obtained significant errors in the covalent dimerization energies (up to 6 kcal mol-1) for molecules containing p-block elements of the 4th period. Significant improvements were achieved for systems containing 4th row elements by using ECP10MDF pseudopotentials along with re-contracted aug-cc-pVQZ-PP-KS basis sets introduced in this work with the contraction coefficients taken from atomic DFT (PBE0) calculations. Overall, the IHD302 set represents a challenge to contemporary quantum chemical methods. This is due to a large number of spatially close p-element bonds which are underrepresented in other benchmark sets, and the partial covalent bonding character for the WDA interactions. The IHD302 set may be helpful to develop more robust and transferable approximate quantum chemical methods in the future.

C-C chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) plays a crucial role in the regulation of immune cell activation and migration as well as the progression of many cancers. We performed an in silico analysis using public data resources and found that the lung cancer patients with higher CCR5 expression had a notably better overall survival than those with lower CCR5 expression patients and CCR5 expression level is positive correlated with the infiltration of immune cells, such as B, CD8+ T and CD4+ T cells, in both lung adenocarcinoma and lung squamous cell cancer. In the present study, we investigated the association between the promoter polymorphism of CCR5 and nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC). A case-control study of 449 NSCLC patients and 516 controls of Chinese Han population was conducted, along with polymorphism detection using a sequencing method. A dual-luciferase reporter assay system was used to analyse the transcriptional activity of CCR5 promoter variations. Our results showed that the frequency of rs1799987-AA was significantly higher in the NSCLC group than in the controls in recessive model (p = .007, OR = 1.66 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.14-2.40, adjusted by sex and age); the G allele showed a significant associated with NSCLC in dominant model (p = .003, OR = 1.64, 95%CI: 1.18-2.28, adjusted by sex and age). Compared with haplotype H1 rs2227010-rs2734648-rs1799987-rs1799988-rs1800023-rs1800024: A-T-G-T-G-C, haplotype H5: A-G-G-T-G-C increased the risk of NSCLC by over 10-fold (p < .0001, OR = 16.09, 95%CI: 5.37-48.20, adjusted by sex and age) and notably depressed the transcriptional activity of the CCR5 promoter in 293T, A549, H1299 and HeLa cells. In conclusion, CCR5 promoter polymorphisms are significantly associated with NSCLC by affecting the transcriptional activity of the CCR5 promoter.

Rationale: The CAPTURE tool (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease [COPD] Assessment in Primary Care to Identify Undiagnosed Respiratory Disease and Exacerbation Risk) was developed to identify patients with undiagnosed COPD with an FEV1 <60% predicted or risk of exacerbation as treatment criteria. Objectives: To test the ability of CAPTURE to identify patients requiring treatment because of symptoms or risk of exacerbation or hospitalization. Methods: Data were from COMPASS (Clinical, Radiological and Biological Factors Associated with Disease Progression, Phenotypes and Endotypes of COPD in China), a prospective study of COPD, chronic bronchitis without airflow limitation (postbronchodilator FEV1/FVC ratio ≥0.70), and healthy never-smokers. CAPTURE was tested as questions alone and with peak expiratory flow measurement. Sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predicted values (PPV and NPV) were calculated for COPD Assessment Test (CAT) scores ⩾10 versus <10, modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) scores ⩾2 versus <2, and at least one moderate exacerbation or hospitalization in the previous year versus none. Measurements and Main Results: Patients with COPD (n = 1,696) had a mean age of 65 ± 7.5 years, and 90% were male, with a postbronchodilator FEV1 of 66.5 ± 20.1% predicted. Control participants (n = 307) had a mean age of 60.2 ± 7.0 years, and 65% were male, with an FEV1/FVC ratio of 0.78 ± 0.04. CAPTURE using peak expiratory flow showed the best combination of sensitivity and specificity. Sensitivity and specificity were 68.5% and 64.0%, respectively, to detect a CAT score ⩾10; 85.6% and 61.0% to detect an mMRC score ⩾2; 63.5% and 55.6% to detect at least one moderate exacerbation; and 70.2% and 59.4% to detect at least one hospitalization. PPVs ranged from 15.6% (moderate exacerbations) to 47.8% (CAT score). NPVs ranged from 80.8% (CAT score) to 95.6% (mMRC score). Conclusions: CAPTURE has good sensitivity to identify patients with COPD who may require treatment because of increased symptoms or risk of exacerbations or hospitalization, including those with an FEV1 >60% predicted. High NPV values show that CAPTURE can also exclude those who may not require treatment. Clinical trial registered with www.clinicaltrials.gov (NCT04853225).

Fibroblast growth factor (FGF) isoform 13, a distinct type of FGF, boasts significant potential for therapeutic intervention in cardiovascular dysfunctions. However, its impact on regulating fibrosis remains unexplored. This study aims to elucidate the role and mechanism of FGF13 on cardiac fibrosis. Here, we show that following transverse aortic constriction (TAC) surgery, interstitial fibrosis and collagen content increase in mice, along with reduced ejection fraction and fractional shortening, augmented heart mass. However, following Fgf13 deletion, interstitial fibrosis is decreased, ejection fraction and fractional shortening are increased, and heart mass is decreased, compared with those in the TAC group. Mechanistically, incubation of cardiac fibroblasts with transforming growth factor ß (TGFß) increases the expressions of types I and III collagen proteins, as well as α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) proteins, and enhances fibroblast proliferation and migration. In the absence of Fgf13, the expressions of these proteins are decreased, and fibroblast proliferation and migration are suppressed, compared with those in the TGFß-stimulated group. Overexpression of FGF13, but not FGF13 mutants defective in microtubule binding and stabilization, rescues the decrease in collagen and α-SMA protein and weakens the proliferation and migration function of the Fgf13 knockdown group. Furthermore, Fgf13 knockdown decreases ROCK protein expression via microtubule disruption. Collectively, cardiac Fgf13 knockdown protects the heart from fibrosis in response to haemodynamic stress by modulating microtubule stabilization and ROCK signaling pathway.

During the last decade, translational and rotational symmetry-breaking phases-density wave order and electronic nematicity-have been established as generic and distinct features of many correlated electron systems, including pnictide and cuprate superconductors. However, in cuprates, the relationship between these electronic symmetry-breaking phases and the enigmatic pseudogap phase remains unclear. Here, we employ resonant X-ray scattering in a cuprate high-temperature superconductor [Formula: see text] (Nd-LSCO) to navigate the cuprate phase diagram, probing the relationship between electronic nematicity of the Cu 3d orbitals, charge order, and the pseudogap phase as a function of doping. We find evidence for a considerable decrease in electronic nematicity beyond the pseudogap phase, either by raising the temperature through the pseudogap onset temperature T* or increasing doping through the pseudogap critical point, p*. These results establish a clear link between electronic nematicity, the pseudogap, and its associated quantum criticality in overdoped cuprates. Our findings anticipate that electronic nematicity may play a larger role in understanding the cuprate phase diagram than previously recognized, possibly having a crucial role in the phenomenology of the pseudogap phase.

Novel bamboo activated carbon (BAC) catalysts decorated with manganese oxides (MnOx) were prepared with varying MnOx contents through a facile one-step redox reaction. Due to the physical anchoring effect of the natural macropore structure for catalyst active components, homogeneous MnOx nanoparticles (NPs), and high specific surface area over catalyst surface, the BAC@MnOx-N (N = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) catalyst shows encouraging adsorption and catalytic oxidation for indoor formaldehyde (HCHO) removal at room temperature. Dynamic adsorption and catalytic activity experiments were conducted. The higher Smicro (733 m2/g) and Vmicro/Vt (82.6%) of the BAC@MnOx-4 catalyst could facilitate its excellent saturated and breakthrough adsorption capacity (5.24 ± 0.42 mg/g, 2.43 ± 0.22 mg/g). The best performer against 2 ppm HCHO is BAC@MnOx-4 catalyst, exhibiting a maximum HCHO removal efficiency of 97% for 17 h without any deactivation as RH = 0, which is higher than those of other MnOx-based catalysts. The average oxidation state and in situ DRIFTS analysis reveal that abundant oxygen vacancies on the BAC@MnOx-4 catalyst could be identified as surface-active sites of decomposing HCHO into the intermediate species (dioxymethylene and formate). This study provides a potential approach to deposit MnOx nanoparticles onto the BAC surface, and this hybrid BAC@MnOx material is promising for indoor HCHO removal at room temperature.

INTRODUCTION: Many patients with Crohn's disease (CD) lose response or become intolerant to antitumor necrosis factor (TNF) therapy and subsequently switch out of class. We compared the effectiveness and safety of ustekinumab to vedolizumab in a large, geographically diverse US population of TNF-experienced patients with CD. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using longitudinal claims data from a large US insurer (Anthem, Inc.). We identified patients with CD initiating vedolizumab or ustekinumab with anti-TNF treatment in the prior 6 months. Our primary outcome was treatment persistence for >52 weeks. Secondary outcomes included (i) all-cause hospitalization, (ii) hospitalization for CD with surgery, (iii) hospitalization for CD without surgery, and (iv) hospitalization for infection. Propensity score fine stratification was used to control for demographic and baseline clinical characteristics and prior treatments. RESULTS: Among 885 new users of ustekinumab and 490 new users of vedolizumab, we observed no difference in treatment persistence (adjusted risk ratio 1.09 [95% confidence interval 0.95-1.25]). Ustekinumab was associated with a lower rate of all-cause hospitalization (adjusted hazard ratio 0.73 [0.59-0.91]), nonsurgical CD hospitalization (adjusted hazard ratio 0.58 [0.40-0.83]), and hospitalization for infection (adjusted hazard ratio 0.56 [0.34-0.92]). DISCUSSION: This real-world comparative effectiveness study of anti-TNF-experienced patients with CD initiating vedolizumab or ustekinumab showed similar treatment persistence rates beyond 52 weeks, although secondary outcomes such as all-cause hospitalizations, nonsurgical CD hospitalizations, and hospitalizations for infection favored ustekinumab initiation. We, therefore, advocate for individualized decision making in this medically refractory population, considering patient preference and other factors such as cost and route of administration.

With the continuous innovation and breakthrough of nanomedical technology, stimuli-responsive nanotechnology has been gradually applied to the surface modification of titanium implants to achieve brilliant antibacterial activity and promoted osteogenesis. Regarding to the different physiological and pathological microenvironment around implants before and after surgery, these surface nanomodifications are designed to respond to different stimuli and environmental changes in a timely, efficient, and specific way/manner. Here, we focus on the materials related to stimuli-responsive nanotechnology on titanium implant surface modification, including metals and their compounds, polymer materials and other materials. In addition, the mechanism of different response types is introduced according to different activation stimuli, including magnetic, electrical, photic, radio frequency and ultrasonic stimuli, pH and enzymatic stimuli (the internal stimuli). Meanwhile, the associated functions, potential applications and developing prospect were discussion.

BACKGROUND: Microgravity directly disturbs the reorganization of the cytoskeleton, exerting profound effects on the physiological process of macrophages. Although it has been established that macrophage M1/M2 polarization could be manipulated by the surface nanostructure of biomaterial in our previous study under normal gravity, how will inflammatory monocytes (iMos)-derived macrophages respond to diverse nanostructured Ti surfaces under normal gravity or microgravity remains unrevealed. RESULTS: In this study, Cytochalasin D, a cytoskeleton relaxant, was employed to establish the simulated microgravity (SMG) environment. Our results showed that human iMos polarized into M2c macrophages on NT5 surface but M1 type on NT20 surface with divergent inflammatory phenotypes according to the profile of macrophage polarization featured molecules under normal gravity. However, such manipulative effects of NTs surfaces on iMos-derived macrophages were strikingly weakened by SMG, characterized by the altered macrophage morphology, changed cytokine secretion profile, and decreased cell polarization capacity. CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this is the first metallic implantable material study focusing on the functions of specific monocyte subsets and its crucial role of the cytoskeleton in materials-mediated host immune response, which enriches our mechanism knowledge about the crosstalk between immunocytes and biomaterials. The results obtained in the present study may also provide potential targets and strategies for biomaterial development and clinical treatment via precise immune-regulation under normal gravity and microgravity.

BACKGROUND: Limited data suggest that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients have pathologic elevated epicardial adipose tissue (EAT), which is splanchnic fat tissue with anti-inflammatory properties and regulating free fatty acids functions. Therefore, there is a need for meta-analysis to explore the relationship between EAT and COPD. METHODS: Online databases were systematically searched for studies about EAT in COPD patients published up to October 5th, 2022. The EAT data of the COPD patient group and the control group were included. Trial sequential analysis (TSA) and meta-analysis were applied to assess the difference in EAT between patients with and without COPD. TSA software and Stata 12.0 were used in all statistical analyses. RESULTS: The final analysis included 5 studies (n = 596 patients). COPD patients had significantly more EAT than control subjects (SMD: 0.0.802; 95% CI: 0.231, 1.372; P = 0.006; TSA-adjusted 95% CI 1.20, 1.80; P < 0.0001). And higher CRP levels in COPD patients than non-COPD patients, whereas triglycerides and LDL were not significantly different between patients with and without COPD. CONCLUSION: EAT is abnormally elevated in COPD patients, which may be related to systemic inflammatory responses in COPD. PROSPERO NUMBER: CRD42021228273.

Under the human-automation codriving future, dynamic trust should be considered. This paper explored how trust changes over time and how multiple factors (time, trust propensity, neuroticism, and takeover warning design) calibrate trust together. We launched two driving simulator experiments to measure drivers' trust before, during, and after the experiment under takeover scenarios. The results showed that trust in automation increased during short-term interactions and dropped after four months, which is still higher than pre-experiment trust. Initial trust and trust propensity had a stable impact on trust. Drivers trusted the system more with the two-stage (MR + TOR) warning design than the one-stage (TOR). Neuroticism had a significant effect on the countdown compared with the content warning.Practitioner summary: The results provide new data and knowledge for trust calibration in the takeover scenario. The findings can help design a more reasonable automated driving system in long-term human-automation interactions.

RESUMO

Eye tracking and other behavioral measurements collected from patient-participants in their hospital rooms afford a unique opportunity to study natural behavior for basic and clinical translational research. We describe an immersive social and behavioral paradigm implemented in patients undergoing evaluation for surgical treatment of epilepsy, with electrodes implanted in the brain to determine the source of their seizures. Our studies entail collecting eye tracking with other behavioral and psychophysiological measurements from patient-participants during unscripted behavior, including social interactions with clinical staff, friends, and family in the hospital room. This approach affords a unique opportunity to study the neurobiology of natural social behavior, though it requires carefully addressing distinct logistical, technical, and ethical challenges. Collecting neurophysiological data synchronized to behavioral and psychophysiological measures helps us to study the relationship between behavior and physiology. Combining across these rich data sources while participants eat, read, converse with friends and family, etc., enables clinical-translational research aimed at understanding the participants' disorders and clinician-patient interactions, as well as basic research into natural, real-world behavior. We discuss data acquisition, quality control, annotation, and analysis pipelines that are required for our studies. We also discuss the clinical, logistical, and ethical and privacy considerations critical to working in the hospital setting.

The temporal variation of greenhouse gas concentrations in China during the COVID-19 lockdown in China is analyzed in this work using high resolution measurements of near surface △CO2, △CH4 and △CO concentrations above the background conditions at Lin'an station (LAN), a regional background station in the Yangtze River Delta region. During the pre-lockdown observational period (IOP-1), both △CO2 and △CH4 exhibited a significant increasing trend relative to the 2011-2019 climatological mean. The reduction of △CO2, △CH4 and △CO during the lockdown observational period (IOP-2) (which also coincided with the Chinese New Year Holiday) reached up to 15.0 ppm, 14.2 ppb and 146.8 ppb, respectively, and a reduction of △CO2/△CO probably due to a dramatic reduction from industrial emissions. △CO2, △CH4 and △CO were observed to keep declining during the post-lockdown easing phase (IOP-3), which is the synthetic result of lower than normal CO2 emissions from rural regions around LAN coupled with strong uptake of the terrestrial ecosystem. Interestingly, the trend reversed to gradual increase for all species during the later easing phase (IOP-4), with △CO2/△CO constantly increasing from IOP-2 to IOP-3 and finally IOP-4, consistent with recovery in industrial emissions associated with the staged resumption of economic activity. On average, △CO2 declined sharply throughout the days during IOP-2 but increased gradually throughout the days during IOP-4. The findings showcase the significant role of emission reduction in accounting for the dramatic changes in measured atmospheric △CO2 and △CH4 associated with the COVID-19 lockdown and recovery.

Early detection can benefit cancer patients with more effective treatments and better prognosis, but existing early screening tests are limited, especially for multi-cancer detection. This study investigated the most prevalent and lethal cancer types, including primary liver cancer (PLC), colorectal adenocarcinoma (CRC), and lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). Leveraging the emerging cell-free DNA (cfDNA) fragmentomics, we developed a robust machine learning model for multi-cancer early detection. 1,214 participants, including 381 PLC, 298 CRC, 292 LUAD patients, and 243 healthy volunteers, were enrolled. The majority of patients (N = 971) were at early stages (stage 0, N = 34; stage I, N = 799). The participants were randomly divided into a training cohort and a test cohort in a 1:1 ratio while maintaining the ratio for the major histology subtypes. An ensemble stacked machine learning approach was developed using multiple plasma cfDNA fragmentomic features. The model was trained solely in the training cohort and then evaluated in the test cohort. Our model showed an Area Under the Curve (AUC) of 0.983 for differentiating cancer patients from healthy individuals. At 95.0% specificity, the sensitivity of detecting all cancer reached 95.5%, while 100%, 94.6%, and 90.4% for PLC, CRC, and LUAD, individually. The cancer origin model demonstrated an overall 93.1% accuracy for predicting cancer origin in the test cohort (97.4%, 94.3%, and 85.6% for PLC, CRC, and LUAD, respectively). Our model sensitivity is consistently high for early-stage and small-size tumors. Furthermore, its detection and origin classification power remained superior when reducing sequencing depth to 1× (cancer detection: ≥ 91.5% sensitivity at 95.0% specificity; cancer origin: ≥ 91.6% accuracy). In conclusion, we have incorporated plasma cfDNA fragmentomics into the ensemble stacked model and established an ultrasensitive assay for multi-cancer early detection, shedding light on developing cancer early screening in clinical practice.

At present, there is no effective noninvasive method for the accurate diagnosis of early-stage lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). This study examined the profile of plasma extracellular vesicle (EV)-delivered microRNAs (miRNAs) in patients with invasive stage I LUAD. In this study, a total of 460 participants were enrolled, including 254 patients with LUAD, 76 patients with benign pulmonary nodules (BPNs), and 130 healthy control patients (HCs). miRNA sequencing was used to analyze the EV miRNA profile of the patient plasma samples (n = 150). A diagnostic signature (d-signature) was identified by applying a stepwise logistic regression algorithm, and a single-center training cohort (n = 150) was tested, followed by a multicenter validation cohort (n = 100). A d-signature comprising four EV-derived miRNAs (hsa-miR-106b-3p, hsa-miR-125a-5p, hsa-miR-3615, and hsa-miR-450b-5p) was developed for the early detection of LUAD. The d-signature had high precision with area under the curve (AUC) values of 0.917 and 0.902 in the training and test cohorts, respectively. Moreover, the d-signature could recognize patients with adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS) and minimally invasive adenocarcinoma (MIA) with AUC values of 0.846 and 0.92, respectively. To sum up, our study detailed the plasma EV-derived miRNA profile in early LUAD patients and developed an EV-derived miRNA d-signature to detect early LUAD.

Developing high-efficiency electrocatalysts toward overall water splitting is an increasingly important area for sustainable energy evolution. Theoretical calculation results demonstrate that the incorporation of Ru optimizes the Gibbs free energy of adsorption of H2 O molecules and intermediates for the hydrogen/oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER) on metal selenide sites, thus boosting electrocatalytic overall water splitting. Accordingly, ruthenium modified nickel diselenide nanosheet arrays are designed and construct on nickel foam (Ru-NiSe2 /NF). The obtained Ru-NiSe2 /NF electrode with a stable 3D structure shows greatly improved OER and HER activity in alkaline solution. Particularly, toward OER, it only requires 210 mV to obtain a current density of 10 mA cm-2 , and the formation of the intermediate nickel oxyhydroxide as active center during the OER process is captured by in situ Raman. Moreover, the overall water splitting can be driven by a voltage of merely 1.537 V to obtain 10 mA cm-2 . This work provides an available strategy for selenides to enhance electrochemical properties and inspires more studies to explore highly efficient electrocatalysts toward full water splitting.

Developing high-efficiency and cost-effective bifunctional catalysts for water electrolysis is fascinating but still remains challenging. Thus, diverse strategies have been utilized to boost the activity toward oxygen/hydrogen evolution reactions (OER/HER) for water splitting. Among them, composition and structure engineering as an effective strategy has received extensive attention. Here, by means of a self-sacrificing template strategy and simultaneous regulation of the composition and structure, Fe-incorporated Ni/MoO2 heterostructural (NiFe/Fe-MoO2 ) hollow nanorod arrays are designed and constructed. Benefiting from abundant catalytic active sites, high intrinsic activity, and fast reaction kinetics, NiFe/Fe-MoO2 exhibits superior OER (η20  = 213 and 219 mV) and Pt-like HER activity (η10  = 34 and 38 mV), respectively, in 1 m KOH and alkaline seawater media. This results in attractive prospects in alkaline water and seawater electrolysis with only voltages of 1.48 and 1.51 V, and 1.69 and 1.73 V to achieve current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm-2 , respectively, superior to the Pt/C and RuO2 pair as a benchmark. Undoubtedly, this work provides a beneficial approach to the design and construction of noble-metal-free bifunctional catalysts toward efficient hydrogen production from alkaline water and seawater electrolysis.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is a heterogeneous disease with variable symptoms, which presents with cough either as the sole or predominant symptom with or without wheezing. We compared the clinical and pathophysiological characteristics of cough predominant asthma (CPA), cough variant asthma (CVA) and classic asthma (CA) in order to determine any differential phenotypic traits. METHODS: In 20 clinics across China, a total of 2088 patients were finally recruited, including 327 CVA, 1041 CPA and 720 CA patients. We recorded cough and wheezing visual analogue scale, Leicester cough questionnaire (LCQ) and asthma control test scores. Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), induced sputum cell counts, and capsaicin cough challenge were also measured and compared. RESULTS: CPA patients more frequently presented with cough as the initial symptom, and laryngeal symptoms (p < 0.001), had less symptoms related with rhinitis/sinusitis and gastroesophageal reflux (p < 0.05) than CA patients. Comorbidities including rhinitis and gastroesophageal reflux were similar, while the proportion of COPD and bronchiectasis was higher in CA patients. There were no differences in FeNO levels, sputum eosinophil and neutrophil counts, FEV1 (%pred) decreased from CVA to CPA to CA patients (p < 0.001). Cough sensitivity was higher in CVA and CPA compared to CA (p < 0.001), and was positively correlated with LCQ scores. CONCLUSIONS: CVA, CPA and CA can be distinguished by the presence of laryngeal symptoms, cough sensitivity and airflow obstruction. Asthma-associated chronic cough was not associated with airway inflammation or comorbidities in our cohort.
