RESUMO

Over the last 10,000 y, humans have manipulated fallow deer populations with varying outcomes. Persian fallow deer (Dama mesopotamica) are now endangered. European fallow deer (Dama dama) are globally widespread and are simultaneously considered wild, domestic, endangered, invasive and are even the national animal of Barbuda and Antigua. Despite their close association with people, there is no consensus regarding their natural ranges or the timing and circumstances of their human-mediated translocations and extirpations. Our mitochondrial analyses of modern and archaeological specimens revealed two distinct clades of European fallow deer present in Anatolia and the Balkans. Zooarchaeological evidence suggests these regions were their sole glacial refugia. By combining biomolecular analyses with archaeological and textual evidence, we chart the declining distribution of Persian fallow deer and demonstrate that humans repeatedly translocated European fallow deer, sourced from the most geographically distant populations. Deer taken to Neolithic Chios and Rhodes derived not from nearby Anatolia, but from the Balkans. Though fallow deer were translocated throughout the Mediterranean as part of their association with the Greco-Roman goddesses Artemis and Diana, deer taken to Roman Mallorca were not locally available Dama dama, but Dama mesopotamica. Romans also initially introduced fallow deer to Northern Europe but the species became extinct and was reintroduced in the medieval period, this time from Anatolia. European colonial powers then transported deer populations across the globe. The biocultural histories of fallow deer challenge preconceptions about the divisions between wild and domestic species and provide information that should underpin modern management strategies.

RESUMO

The 2022 multicountry mpox outbreak concurrent with the ongoing Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic further highlighted the need for genomic surveillance and rapid pathogen whole-genome sequencing. While metagenomic sequencing approaches have been used to sequence many of the early mpox infections, these methods are resource intensive and require samples with high viral DNA concentrations. Given the atypical clinical presentation of cases associated with the outbreak and uncertainty regarding viral load across both the course of infection and anatomical body sites, there was an urgent need for a more sensitive and broadly applicable sequencing approach. Highly multiplexed amplicon-based sequencing (PrimalSeq) was initially developed for sequencing of Zika virus, and later adapted as the main sequencing approach for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Here, we used PrimalScheme to develop a primer scheme for human monkeypox virus that can be used with many sequencing and bioinformatics pipelines implemented in public health laboratories during the COVID-19 pandemic. We sequenced clinical specimens that tested presumptively positive for human monkeypox virus with amplicon-based and metagenomic sequencing approaches. We found notably higher genome coverage across the virus genome, with minimal amplicon drop-outs, in using the amplicon-based sequencing approach, particularly in higher PCR cycle threshold (Ct) (lower DNA titer) samples. Further testing demonstrated that Ct value correlated with the number of sequencing reads and influenced the percent genome coverage. To maximize genome coverage when resources are limited, we recommend selecting samples with a PCR Ct below 31 Ct and generating 1 million sequencing reads per sample. To support national and international public health genomic surveillance efforts, we sent out primer pool aliquots to 10 laboratories across the United States, United Kingdom, Brazil, and Portugal. These public health laboratories successfully implemented the human monkeypox virus primer scheme in various amplicon sequencing workflows and with different sample types across a range of Ct values. Thus, we show that amplicon-based sequencing can provide a rapidly deployable, cost-effective, and flexible approach to pathogen whole-genome sequencing in response to newly emerging pathogens. Importantly, through the implementation of our primer scheme into existing SARS-CoV-2 workflows and across a range of sample types and sequencing platforms, we further demonstrate the potential of this approach for rapid outbreak response.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The DNA-repair enzyme Artemis is essential for rearrangement of T- and B-cell receptors. Mutations in DCLRE1C, which encodes Artemis, cause Artemis-deficient severe combined immunodeficiency (ART-SCID), which is poorly responsive to allogeneic hematopoietic-cell transplantation. METHODS: We carried out a phase 1-2 clinical study of the transfusion of autologous CD34+ cells, transfected with a lentiviral vector containing DCLRE1C, in 10 infants with newly diagnosed ART-SCID. We followed them for a median of 31.2 months. RESULTS: Marrow harvest, busulfan conditioning, and lentiviral-transduced CD34+ cell infusion produced the expected grade 3 or 4 adverse events. All the procedures met prespecified criteria for feasibility at 42 days after infusion. Gene-marked T cells were detected at 6 to 16 weeks after infusion in all the patients. Five of 6 patients who were followed for at least 24 months had T-cell immune reconstitution at a median of 12 months. The diversity of T-cell receptor ß chains normalized by 6 to 12 months. Four patients who were followed for at least 24 months had sufficient B-cell numbers, IgM concentration, or IgM isohemagglutinin titers to permit discontinuation of IgG infusions. Three of these 4 patients had normal immunization responses, and the fourth has started immunizations. Vector insertion sites showed no evidence of clonal expansion. One patient who presented with cytomegalovirus infection received a second infusion of gene-corrected cells to achieve T-cell immunity sufficient for viral clearance. Autoimmune hemolytic anemia developed in 4 patients 4 to 11 months after infusion; this condition resolved after reconstitution of T-cell immunity. All 10 patients were healthy at the time of this report. CONCLUSIONS: Infusion of lentiviral gene-corrected autologous CD34+ cells, preceded by pharmacologically targeted low-exposure busulfan, in infants with newly diagnosed ART-SCID resulted in genetically corrected and functional T and B cells. RESUMO

Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a primary immunodeficiency characterized by life-threatening infections and inflammatory conditions. Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is the definitive treatment for CGD, but questions remain regarding patient selection and impact of active disease on transplant outcomes. We performed a multi-institutional retrospective and prospective study of 391 patients with CGD treated either conventionally (non-HCT) enrolled from 2004 to 2018 or with HCT from 1996 to 2018. Median follow-up after HCT was 3.7 years with a 3-year overall survival of 82% and event-free survival of 69%. In a multivariate analysis, a Lansky/Karnofsky score <90 and use of HLA-mismatched donors negatively affected survival. Age, genotype, and oxidase status did not affect outcomes. Before HCT, patients had higher infection density, higher frequency of noninfectious lung and liver diseases, and more steroid use than conventionally treated patients; however, these issues did not adversely affect HCT survival. Presence of pre-HCT inflammatory conditions was associated with chronic graft-versus-host disease. Graft failure or receipt of a second HCT occurred in 17.6% of the patients and was associated with melphalan-based conditioning and/or early mixed chimerism. At 3 to 5 years after HCT, patients had improved growth and nutrition, resolved infections and inflammatory disease, and lower rates of antimicrobial prophylaxis or corticosteroid use compared with both their baseline and those of conventionally treated patients. HCT leads to durable resolution of CGD symptoms and lowers the burden of the disease. Patients with active infection or inflammation are candidates for transplants; HCT should be considered before the development of comorbidities that could affect performance status. This trial was registered at www.clinicaltrials.gov as #NCT02082353.

RESUMO

Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) is characterized by a severe deficiency in T cell numbers. We analyzed data collected (n = 307) for PHA-based T cell proliferation from the PIDTC SCID protocol 6901, using either a radioactive or flow cytometry method. In comparing the two groups, a smaller number of the patients tested by flow cytometry had <10% of the lower limit of normal proliferation as compared to the radioactive method (p = 0.02). Further, in patients with CD3+ T cell counts between 51 and 300 cells/µL, there was a higher proliferative response with the PHA flow assay compared to the 3H-T assay (p < 0.0001), suggesting that the method of analysis influences the resolution and interpretation of PHA results. Importantly, we observed many SCID patients with profound T cell lymphopenia having normal T cell proliferation when assessed by flow cytometry. We recommend this test be considered only as supportive in the diagnosis of typical SCID.

RESUMO

Treatment of severe eczema in patients with primary immunodeficiencies can be particularly challenging as there are no guidelines with regards to these conditions. Dupilumab is an interleukin (IL)-4Rα antagonist that inhibits both IL-4 and IL-13 and is approved for the treatment of atopic dermatitis in pediatric patients. In this report, we describe a patient with a case of severe eczema in the context of Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome-related disorder, who was successfully treated with dupilumab.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Shearer et al in 2014 articulated well-defined criteria for the diagnosis and classification of severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) as part of the Primary Immune Deficiency Treatment Consortium's (PIDTC's) prospective and retrospective studies of SCID. OBJECTIVE: Because of the advent of newborn screening for SCID and expanded availability of genetic sequencing, revision of the PIDTC 2014 Criteria was needed. METHODS: We developed and tested updated PIDTC 2022 SCID Definitions by analyzing 379 patients proposed for prospective enrollment into Protocol 6901, focusing on the ability to distinguish patients with various SCID subtypes. RESULTS: According to PIDTC 2022 Definitions, 18 of 353 patients eligible per 2014 Criteria were considered not to have SCID, whereas 11 of 26 patients ineligible per 2014 Criteria were determined to have SCID. Of note, very low numbers of autologous T cells (<0.05 × 109/L) characterized typical SCID under the 2022 Definitions. Pathogenic variant(s) in SCID-associated genes was identified in 93% of patients, with 7 genes (IL2RG, RAG1, ADA, IL7R, DCLRE1C, JAK3, and RAG2) accounting for 89% of typical SCID. Three genotypes (RAG1, ADA, and RMRP) accounted for 57% of cases of leaky/atypical SCID; there were 13 other rare genotypes. Patients with leaky/atypical SCID were more likely to be diagnosed at more than age 1 year than those with typical SCID lacking maternal T cells: 20% versus 1% (P < .001). Although repeat testing proved important, an initial CD3 T-cell count of less than 0.05 × 109/L differentiated cases of typical SCID lacking maternal cells from leaky/atypical SCID: 97% versus 7% (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: The PIDTC 2022 Definitions describe SCID and its subtypes more precisely than before, facilitating analyses of SCID characteristics and outcomes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: While racial disparities in the clinical outcomes of hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) patients have been explored, racial disparities in quality of life (QoL) during the re-adjustment phase after transplant are yet to be investigated in pediatric patients. The objective of this study was to examine the role of patient race in QoL at least 2 years after pediatric HSCT. PROCEDURE: We conducted a retrospective chart review of patients under 21 years of age at diagnosis who received an allogeneic transplant at our institution between January 2007 and December 2017. Patient QoL was assessed using the Pediatric Quality-of-Life Inventory Generic Score Scales (PedsQL TM 4.0) at least 2 years post transplant. Patient demographic, treatment, and transplant outcome data were obtained for subsequent analysis, where patient race was categorized as either Black, White, Hispanic, or Native American. RESULTS: Data were collected on 86 pediatric patients who underwent HSCT. Forty patients (46.5%) were non-Hispanic White, 29 (33.7%) Hispanic, 10 (11.6%) Black, and seven (8.1%) Native American. Where preliminary analyses indicated a difference in QoL by patient race, there were no significant differences in physical, emotional, social, and school functioning by patient race after adjusting for transplant characteristics (age at transplant, sex, diagnosis, donor type, and conditioning regimen) and determinants of socioeconomic status (insurance type, estimated household income). CONCLUSIONS: Pediatric patients had comparable QoL, regardless of race, at a median of 3 years after HSCT in our study cohort.

RESUMO

The few existing typology studies on women who have sexually offended (WWSO) have largely been limited by small sample sizes, have not included scale scores from risk assessments, or used recidivism within their typology (instead of using typologies to predict recidivism). In our sample of 241 WWSO, we conducted a latent profile analysis and observed four, distinct profiles: "low-risk WWSO," characterized by fewer criminal history incidents and lower risk-assessment scores; "problem-endorsing WWSO," with higher probability of endorsing various life problems such as educational/employment and emotional/personal issues; "antisocial WWSO" with more criminal history incidents, alcohol/drug problems, and higher scores on psychopathy; and "combined WWSO" with characteristics of both the problem-endorsing and antisocial profiles. This last profile showed elevations in general and/or violent recidivism risk, but relatively low recidivism. There were no cases of sexual recidivism in our sample following an average 30-month follow-up period. Membership in the antisocial profile predicted general and/or violent recidivism and suggests that WWSO typologies may be useful in predicting non-sexual recidivism for this population.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The incidence of severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) in the USA was reported as 1 in 58,000 live births. In Arizona, it was anticipated that newborn screening would identify two to four cases of SCID per year. This estimate did not consider ethnic nuances in Arizona, with higher percentages of Native American and Hispanic populations compared to national percentages. The true incidence of SCID and non-SCID T cell lymphopenia has not previously been reported in Arizona. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed on all abnormal SCID newborn screening (NBS) tests in Arizona from January 1, 2018, to December 31, 2019, using data from the Arizona Department of Health Services and the Phoenix Children's Hospital's electronic medical record [IRB# 20-025]. RESULTS: Seven infants were diagnosed with SCID, yielding an incidence of 1 in 22,819 live births. Four of these infants had Artemis-type SCID. Thirteen infants were identified with an abnormal initial NBS which ultimately did not lead to a diagnosis of SCID. Four of these infants were diagnosed with congenital syndromes associated with T cell lymphopenia. Infants of Hispanic ethnicity were over-represented in this cohort. CONCLUSION: Over 2 years, NBS in Arizona confirmed an incidence more than 2.5 times that reported nationally. This increased incidence is likely reflective of Arizona's unique population profile, with a higher percentage of Native American population. The findings in our non-SCID cohort are in alignment with previously published data, except for an increased percentage of infants of Hispanic/Latino ethnicity, possibly reflecting Arizona's increased percentage of Hispanic/Latino population compared to the general US population.

RESUMO

Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) is an X-linked disease caused by mutations in the WAS gene, leading to thrombocytopenia, eczema, recurrent infections, autoimmune disease, and malignancy. Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is the primary curative approach, with the goal of correcting the underlying immunodeficiency and thrombocytopenia. HCT outcomes have improved over time, particularly for patients with HLA-matched sibling and unrelated donors. We report the outcomes of 129 patients with WAS who underwent HCT at 29 Primary Immune Deficiency Treatment Consortium centers from 2005 through 2015. Median age at HCT was 1.2 years. Most patients (65%) received myeloablative busulfan-based conditioning. With a median follow-up of 4.5 years, the 5-year overall survival (OS) was 91%. Superior 5-year OS was observed in patients <5 vs ≥5 years of age at the time of HCT (94% vs 66%; overall P = .0008). OS was excellent regardless of donor type, even in cord blood recipients (90%). Conditioning intensity did not affect OS, but was associated with donor T-cell and myeloid engraftment after HCT. Specifically, patients who received fludarabine/melphalan-based reduced-intensity regimens were more likely to have donor myeloid chimerism <50% early after HCT. In addition, higher platelet counts were observed among recipients who achieved full (>95%) vs low-level (5%-49%) donor myeloid engraftment. In summary, HCT outcomes for WAS have improved since 2005, compared with prior reports. HCT at a younger age continues to be associated with superior outcomes supporting the recommendation for early HCT. High-level donor myeloid engraftment is important for platelet reconstitution after either myeloablative or busulfan-containing reduced intensity conditioning. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: During pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT), there is significant reduction in physical activity, leading to loss of strength and function, along with decline in quality of life (QoL). This study evaluates the effects of a supervised exercise program on functional ability, mobility, strength, and QoL during and following pediatric HSCT. METHODS: Patients ages 4-21 years presenting for HSCT were randomized to either an intervention group, who underwent exercise routines three times weekly and once weekly on discharge for 6 weeks supervised by a physical therapist, or the control group, which was treated per standard of care. Forty subjects were recruited for the study, 20 in each arm. Physical therapy and QoL assessments were conducted at three time points: pre-HSCT (baseline), on the day of hospital discharge, and 6 weeks after discharge. RESULTS: Exercise capacity and endurance using Six-Minute Walk test (p = .023) and strength using manual muscle testing (p = .005) were improved in the exercise group, compared to the control group. There was evidence that some QoL outcomes (measured using the Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System) were improved 6 weeks post discharge, with observed decreases in anxiety (p = .0009) and fatigue (p = .037). CONCLUSION: Supervised exercise program during pediatric HSCT has positive effects on endurance, functional mobility, and muscle strength, and may also result in improvements in some aspects of QoL. This trial was registered at www. CLINICALTRIALS: gov as NCT04663503.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The Primary Immune Deficiency Treatment Consortium (PIDTC) enrolled children with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) in a prospective natural history study of hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) outcomes over the last decade. Despite newborn screening (NBS) for SCID, infections occurred prior to HSCT. This study's objectives were to define the types and timing of infection prior to HSCT in patients diagnosed via NBS or by family history (FH) and to understand the breadth of strategies employed at PIDTC centers for infection prevention. METHODS: We analyzed retrospective data on infections and pre-transplant management in patients with SCID diagnosed by NBS and/or FH and treated with HSCT between 2010 and 2014. PIDTC centers were surveyed in 2018 to understand their practices and protocols for pre-HSCT management. RESULTS: Infections were more common in patients diagnosed via NBS (55%) versus those diagnosed via FH (19%) (p = 0.012). Outpatient versus inpatient management did not impact infections (47% vs 35%, respectively; p = 0.423). There was no consensus among PIDTC survey respondents as to the best setting (inpatient vs outpatient) for pre-HSCT management. While isolation practices varied, immunoglobulin replacement and antimicrobial prophylaxis were more uniformly implemented. CONCLUSION: Infants with SCID diagnosed due to FH had lower rates of infection and proceeded to HSCT more quickly than did those diagnosed via NBS. Pre-HSCT management practices were highly variable between centers, although uses of prophylaxis and immunoglobulin support were more consistent. This study demonstrates a critical need for development of evidence-based guidelines for the pre-HSCT management of infants with SCID following an abnormal NBS. TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT01186913.

RESUMO

Post-hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) maintenance therapy using azacitidine and prophylactic donor lymphocyte infusions (DLI) was implemented for high-risk acute myeloid leukemia. Azacitidine was started on day +60 as a 5 day course every 28 days for 6 cycles. DLI was given every 6 weeks for 3 doses starting after day +120. Ten patients were treated on this protocol. With a 90% one-year disease free survival, we report this post-HSCT maintenance therapy is feasible, safe, and well tolerated.

RESUMO

The increased accessibility and use of pornography in Western society highlights the emergent need to understand the relationship between its use and sexual coercion. Decades of research have demonstrated a consistent relationship between pornography use and engaging in sexually aggressive behavior, although what drives this relationship remains largely unexplained. Researchers have recently presented potential explanations for these relationships, such as the use of violent pornography types, the development of aberrant sexual scripts, and the frequency of pornography use. This study seeks to contribute to the explanation by examining the potential mediating effects of sexual arousal on the relationship between pornography use frequency and willingness to engage in verbal and illegal sexual coercive behaviors by examining a sample of male and female college adults. This population reports some of the highest rates of pornography use. The sample of 745 college students were exposed to either an exotic video presentation or a criminal justice lecture, and provided a dating scenario and sexual arousal assessments. Results indicated those young adults that consume pornography more frequently were more likely to experience higher levels of sexual arousal to the erotic video than those who reported little or no use. However, after controlling for several variables significantly related to sexual coercion, arousal did not mediate willingness to engage in verbal or illegal sexual coercive behaviors. Other significant results and implications are discussed.

RESUMO

Although many instruments have been validated to assess risk of sexual recidivism among men, no similar tool exists for women who have sexually offended. As a result, some jurisdictions use male-based instruments to assess women despite the lack of validation research examining the predictive utility for this subgroup. This study examined the utility of the Static-99R in predicting sexual recidivism among women. Based on a sample of 739 women convicted of sexual offenses in Texas, findings show that the total score was not significantly associated with sexual recidivism. When looking at individual items, other than a history of prior sexual offenses and noncontact sexual offenses, no item of the Static-99R was significantly associated with sexual recidivism among women. Furthermore, only three items (female victims/solo offender, 4+ sentencing dates, and having not lived with a romantic other for 2+ years) were significantly associated with nonsexual recidivism. These findings indicate that the Static-99R is not suitable to assess risk of recidivism among women convicted of sexual offenses.

RESUMO

Rationale: "Noninfectious" pulmonary complications are significant causes of morbidity and mortality after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant. Early-onset viral reactivations or infections are common after transplant. Whether the first-onset viral infection causes noninfectious pulmonary complications is unknown. Objectives: To determine whether the first-onset viral infection within 100 days after transplant predisposes to development of noninfectious pulmonary complications. Methods: We performed a retrospective review of 738 allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant patients enrolled from 2005 to 2011. We also established a novel bone marrow transplantation mouse model to test whether herpesviral reactivation after transplant causes organ injury. Measurements and Main Results: First-onset viral infections with human herpesvirus 6 or Epstein-Barr virus within 100 days after transplant increase the risk of developing idiopathic pneumonia syndrome (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 5.52; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.61-18.96; P = 0.007; and aHR, 9.21; 95% CI, 2.63-32.18; P = 0.001, respectively). First infection with human cytomegalovirus increases risk of bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (aHR, 2.88; 95% CI, 1.50-5.55; P = 0.002) and grade II-IV acute graft-versus-host disease (aHR, 1.59; 95% CI, 1.06-2.39; P = 0.02). Murine roseolovirus, a homolog of human herpesvirus 6, can also be reactivated in the lung and other organs after bone marrow transplantation. Reactivation of murine roseolovirus induced an idiopathic pneumonia syndrome-like phenotype and aggravated acute graft-versus-host disease. Conclusions: First-onset herpesviral infection within 100 days after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant increases risk of pulmonary complications. Experimentally reactivating murine roseolovirus causes organ injury similar to phenotypes seen in human transplant recipients.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) affects approximately 1/3 of patients with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD). Comprehensive investigation of the effect of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) on CGD IBD and the impact of IBD on transplant outcomes is lacking. METHODS: We collected data retrospectively from 145 patients with CGD who had received allogeneic HCT at 26 Primary Immune Deficiency Treatment Consortium (PIDTC) centers between January 1, 2005 and June 30, 2016. RESULTS: Forty-nine CGD patients with IBD and 96 patients without IBD underwent allogeneic HCT. Eighty-nine percent of patients with IBD and 93% of patients without IBD engrafted (p = 0.476). Upper gastrointestinal acute GVHD occurred in 8.5% of patients with IBD and 3.5% of patients without IBD (p = 0.246). Lower gastrointestinal acute GVHD occurred in 10.6% of patients with IBD and 11.8% of patients without IBD (p = 0.845). The cumulative incidence of acute GVHD grades II-IV was 30% (CI 17-43%) in patients with IBD and 20% (CI 12-29%) in patients without IBD (p = 0.09). Five-year overall survival was equivalent for patients with and without IBD: 80% [CI 66-89%] and 83% [CI 72-90%], respectively (p = 0.689). All 33 surviving evaluable patients with a history of IBD experienced resolution of IBD by 2 years following allogeneic HCT. CONCLUSIONS: In this cohort, allogeneic HCT was curative for CGD-associated IBD. IBD should not contraindicate HCT, as it does not lead to an increased risk of mortality. This study is registered at clinicaltrials.gov NCT02082353.

RESUMO

RATIONALE: The species-specific relationship between phosphate (δ18 OP values) and structural carbonate (δ18 OC values) oxygen isotope ratios has been established for several modern and fossil animal species but until now it has not been investigated in European fallow deer (Dama dama dama). This study describes the relationship between phosphate and structural carbonate bioapatite in tooth enamel of extant fallow deer, which will help us further understand the species' unique environmental and cultural history. METHODS: The oxygen isotope composition of phosphate (δ18 OP value) and structural carbonate (δ18 OC value) of hydroxylapatite was determined in 51 modern fallow deer tooth enamel samples from across Europe and West Asia. The δ18 OC values were measured on a GV IsoPrime dual-inlet mass spectrometer and the δ18 OP values on a temperature-controlled elemental analyser (TC/EA) coupled to a DeltaPlus XL isotope ratio mass spectrometer via a ConFlo III interface. RESULTS: This study establishes a direct and linear relationship between the δ18 OC and δ18 OP values from fallow deer tooth enamel (δ18 OC = +9.244(±0.216) + 0.958 * δ18 OP (±0.013)). Despite the successful regression, the variation in δ18 O values from samples collected in the same geographical area is greater than expected, although the results cluster in broad climatic groupings when Koppen-Geiger classifications are taken into account for the individuals' locations. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first comprehensive study of the relationship between ionic forms of oxygen (phosphate oxygen and structural carbonate) in fallow deer dental enamel. The new equation will allow direct comparison with other herbivore data. Variable δ18 O values within populations of fallow deer broadly reflect the ecological zones they are found in which may explain this pattern of results in other euryphagic species.
